It was particularly warm inside the classroom. December brought with it the freezing weather that usually turned the old professor's knees to creaking, rusty joints. Hence, the classroom was warm, warmer than the rest of the castle. The desks were spread out in three rows as usual with name tags on them that assigned students to their chairs. A bunch of belts were piled on the side of Botros' big desk in front of the blackboard. The old man himself was standing and leaning sideways on his desk on the small dais, his cane was in his hand though he didn't need it for support.
Walk in, take a seat and keep the chatting to a minimum, this isn't your first Ancient Runes class this year so you already know that professor Botros doesn't appreciate loud chatter.
ooc: - Please familiarize yourself with this class' rules and guidelines before you post.
- As mentioned, this isn't the first class, your character should know the professor so please act like it. :)
- Class HAS STARTED.

.... Zander was already lost. Lost and the lesson had just started. How in the name of Merlin was he supposed to pass his exam at the end of the term if he couldn't even answer a single question in the middle of a lesson? This was hopeless. And not to mention everyone had already mentioned uses for the only rune he really knew much about: Sowilo. What even was a Sowilo though?
Oh wait. He was totally using his textbook as a pillow, but uh... Could he just sneak a peek in there please, Professor? Only to see the names of them and stuff. Uh huh. Uh huh.... The Gryffindor scratched his head a little as he flipped to the page with all the runes listed and hm.
Well it was worth a shot? "Uh, Ansuz... Since it's uh... Communication... And.. Uh, confidence and stuff," which he needed to answer this question really, "Could it be used with something like the cantis spell?" And if not was it too late to drop out of this class because... Uh... Yeah.

Runes and charms could be combined together? Amur blinked at the Professor several times. As if learning the names of charm spells, the wand movements and then actually casting said spell wasn't enough to remember. Now they were tacking on runes as well?
She hoped they wouldn't have to memorize drawing them. Or how to prononuce them. From her textbook, they looked like tiny tongue-twisters. Even more, she hoped there wouldn't be a test on this. Still, as daunting as it seemed, she had to try.
But what were they supposed to match the charm with? Was it the translation, the divinatory meaning, the magical use or the energy? Well, Professor Bortos had said meaning, so that could either be the translation or divinatory meaning. From the corner of her eye, she saw one of the older students head-book. It seemed like an appropriate response.
Amur's face controted into several different expressions as she scanned the list of runes and tried to think of charms she knew or had heard of. What charm could possibly be associated with an ox? Nope. Passing that one by, thank-you-very-much.
And then she found one. Or at least, she thought she might have something. She put her hand up. "Professor, what about coupling Alegez...Algiz with the anti-cheating charm?"
Continuing on the train of worry about tests and quizzes. Though, in sudden hindsight, it seemed like a bad suggestion. What if she had just given the Professor an idea and he would use it on their quizzes. Then there would be no hope in passing if they couldn't gain unknowing assistance from other classmates! FAIL!

Geez what happened to Adi? Did he finally grow some backbone or something? Surely he was joking right? But then he watched the grin fade away and heard his threat about needing more detention time with Cat Man “That was low, even for you” he muttered in a whisper as he leaned towards the Prefect. He couldn’t risk the Old Man overhearing. “And you’re bothered by it now?, I’ve called you that for almost two years now…I figured you were okay with it since you never snapped back like that” Shaking his head, Kevin leaned back to his own seat, ignoring the Hufflepuff Prefect who he thought he had a pretty good relationship with. Not friends, but just..normal. Seemed like he was wrong.
As class began and the Professor started to talk, Kevin zoned out at his words. Runes was boring in his opinion but it beats Arithmancy. At the end of the long talk, he did hear the question and with a sigh he opened his text book. “Algiz means protection, so the protego spell”
Ancient Runes was one of those classes that Dot wasn't really sure about, and if the professor hadn't had SUCH a cute dog, she probably wouldn't have opted to take it. It seemed hard and scary and unrelated to her in any way. But at least the professor had a nice face and seemed to be good at explaining stuff.
"Hullo, professor," Dot paused on her way past him and stared up at him with big solemn eyes. "I'm a third year now so I can take your class. Third year, though, so I don't know very much. Or anything, really. Try not to break my brain, on account of I need it later." She shook his elbow before heading off to her seat.
Oh lookit that. The Cutty was there. "Hiiii," she whispered and wiggled her fingers at him.
From his seat, Cuthbert looked up and saw the small snakelette waving. This was perfect. He was going to need someone to take notes up to Beverly every now and again. So he did what any self-interested fifteen year old punk would do and smiled, made eyebrows and waved back. Welcome to Ancient Runes, young grasshopper.

This was why Dot wasn't a Ravenclaw. Sigh.
Even though she was still struggling with what the heck a RUNE even was, Dot flipped gamely through the book (skipping over the head print she'd left). What spell could she improve upon by using one of these rune things? HMM?
"Um. Professor? Maybe... maybe you could cast this Haz... Hagalaz with Stupefy? Because it's about disrupting or stopping something? So... " Maybe he could come over and give her a hug now? Because her brain was MELTING, sir.
Cutty found himself liking that way Dot's brain thought. The way he worked over the best solution for either working out or getting into the worst scenario. Something that would always lend like a ring full of keys to try out here and again through life as one found oneself down and out. He mentally stored away this information thinking it might come in handy at some point in future.
Addressing the Professor's question which he asked the class at large to think about, Cutty put his hand up and considered out loud. "In casting charms that help the growth of plants professor, such as the ones we learn in herbology, we could use Berkana couldn't we?" Like the ones Bentley had taught them to age and grow their BONZAIIIII trees.

Cilla quickly flipped through her textbook for a moment and then raised her hand.
"The rune ţurisaz could be used with the incantation "Engorgio" because the rune ţurisaz means giant," she replied.
"Thurisaz means giant literally, but that's not what we're supposed to look at in runes." He answered the girl gently, smiling at her and pointing at her textbook. "Look at the energy section, it will help you more. Thurisaz, for example, would be great with repairing charms." She was going to get credit for her answer, anyway, it was good effort.

"Laguz works great with Aguamenti, yes. Very good." He passed by the boy's desk and patted his arm.

It was so nice and warm here, that it made her think of fire, which reminded her of one of the classes from her Third Year. Raising her hand she said, "Kenaz and Incendio." That had come in handy for cooking.
"Another rune to be used with Incendio, yes. Kenaz is more controlled than Sowilo so I'd choose it instead. True." He smiled at the talented badger.

Because of the whole sun thing and because the rune represents positive energy and good stuff and all, and a lot of people associate, like... creating light to counter the dark, figuratively as well as literally. Maybe?"
Toby lowered his hand again and rubbed a balled up fist at one of his tired eyes. Next time he had a class this early, this Hufflepuff would be loading up on coffee beforehand. Yep.
If professors were encouraged to hug students in classrooms, Botros would've hugged Tobias. Instead, though, he clapped for him enthusiastically. Probably the first thoughtful answer in class so far. "Absolutely brilliant, yes. I bet you can get Sowilo to create a stronger light with Lumos." So, not just figuratively. Botros was now excited to see the boy try.

Oh Merlin, yes, another thoughtful answer. Sort of. "Definitely. Othala is bound tightly with one's destination, particularly what they consider as home. But the longer she looked, well, there it was. "Kenaz could be used with Lumos, since kenaz means torch and Lumos basically turns your wand into one." Unless kenaz was talking about torching something, in which case it would be Incendio. But she thought her original answer was the correct one.

Cantis with Ansuz? Botros laughed heartily at this Gryffindor's answer. Lions sure were such amusing folk. "Why, I would love to see that happen, my dear boy." He didn't give a certain answer, though. There was no right or wrong, runes were much more flexible than that.

"Brilliant, yes, Mr. Mordaunt." Another smart answer, Botros was pleased in general.
"I hope you all made notes of each other's answers." He went up to the front of the class and beamed at everyone. "It's not vital, though, because we're moving on to another related topic." He held his cane with both his hands. "Runes usually are mentioned most in Norse mythology. Odin being the father and founder of all runes. Those ancient figures used runes heavily in their lives, whether to defeat evil or in small tasks such as growing magical plants." A look in Mr. Mordaunt's way who rightfully suggested Berkana for that. "Thor, for example, used the rune Uruz on his hammer so it could gain impeccable strength. Sigurd had this great, defeatless sword with Teiwaz on it. Odin himself had many exceptional instruments such as his cane with the rune Ansuz on it." There were many, many more but Botros stopped here.
"There is one trickster that we're going to talk about briefly today and that is Loki. Have you heard of him? What do you know about Loki, why is he famously known as the trickster?"
ooc: - One answer per student as usual. :)
- No catching up is allowed, please, just go with the TL of the class.
- Do not confuse Loki from the movies with Loki from the Norse mythology, there are some differences.
- If your character doesn't know anything, be creative with your answer, Botros isn't looking for a know-it-all kind of answers, he likes to see effort.
- Class will continue in 24 hrs! PM/VM me about any questions if you need.

Low of him? Hmph. Adi chose to remain silent after Kevin was done. The nickname had gotten to him during that DADA homework with the salamanders and Adi hoped the name would go away. But he had a suspicion it wouldn't. *Sigh* At least he would still be friends with the young Lion. No need to get all berserk on him because of that.
.....................
Oh awesome! His answer was correct. After returning Botros's smile, the Puff proceeded to write down the answers given by the others, his own at the top of the list. Done with that list, he now craned his head to the left. Loki? Who didn't know Loki? Too bad they weren't talking about the Loki from the awesome superhero movies since Adi knew more about THAT one.
But he raised his hand. "Loki's father is Fárbauti and his mother is Laufey and they were both giants.'' That was the first thing he remembered about the trickster. ''It was possible he was called a trickster because he would use his shape shifting abilities to turn around situations that were not in his favour to his advantage.''
Of course Adi could be very much wrong there but those were his thoughts.

It was a good thing that Janelle had been taking notes as her classmates gave their answers. Now the Professor said that they should have done so. She was trying to keep up with all the runes and what they were good for, but it was a lot of information. Before she knew it, another question was presented. This time Janelle would not wait to give her answer.
She raised her hand, hoping to be one of the first students called on......before her answer was taken by another student. "Loki turned himself into a fish.....I think it was a salmon. " Janelle was sure that he had turned into several things, but she remembered hearing about the fish. "Maybe he was called a trickster because he could turn himself into different things."
After sharing her answer, Janelle immediately got her quill ready. She had more notes to take and didn't want to miss out on anything important.

Oh so they were going to talk about a guy named Loki? Hmmm. Ezra wasn't sure if he remembered Professor Botros talking about him before or not but if his name made sense with what it sounded like and he was a trickster, then Ezra maybe had an idea.
"Sir, is he part of the reason we--I mean, children, play the game hide-and-seek? Loki....Seeki?" And for being a trickster he is probably a cheater and peeks.
The clapping from Botros was a right little ego boost, and Toby smiled at the professor's response to his answer. Soooo... yes. Not a bad answer, then. Good to know. Still smiling, Toby wrote that down along with the other answers Professor Botros was giving approval.
But yeah, moving on, what did Toby know about Loki? Quite a bit, because he'd raked through his textbook an awful lot, especially last year with studying and all. The shapeshifter thing had already been mentioned, and was pretty integral, but there was a lot more to go on. In fact, Toby was having trouble deciding exactly what answer he wanted to give, but eventually the Hufflepuff raised his hand.
"Before he went, uhh... evil and stuff, and got the bad reputation for bad things, he was the God of Fire. And basically he was really funny and wanted to make people laugh, which he did with pranks and stuff. But then the pranks turned into practical jokes that were, like... sort of nasty. It got out of hand. Eventually he became known as the Trickster God, and was more, uh... viscious. But yeah, I suppose playing tricks will get you the nickname 'trickster'."
Toby, who always liked to believe in the good in people (or in this case, gods) preferred thinking about Loki as he was before. Partly because it was before he went all mean (and Toby tried to avoid negative thought like it were the wizarding equivalent of the plague), and partly because he supposed it was easy to get carried away with pranks and tricks and end up hurting people. It was one of the reasons Tobias was very very cautious when it came to pranks and jokes, and almost always felt guilty and apologetic afterwards. He didn't want to become evil, okay?

As Bostros was approving of his answer and he felt the tap on the shoulder which meant a job well done, it did give his ego a boost. He smiled to himself and he wasn't too bad at runes than he thought. Alright moving on? He did copy some notes on what the students said. Some of them were interesting and things he would never think of. Now onto Loki is it? What did he know about Loki? He was known as the trickster but why was he?
Kace raised his hand and said, "Professor I think he is known as the trickster because he rather do mischievous things than help the gods. He could shapeshift into a fly which I think it is kind of interesting because he could use it to his advantage to spy on the other gods." He didn't know he could shapeshift into other things but a seal was kind of weird in his opinion.
Norah furrowed her eyebrows as she tried to keep up with everyone's answers in her notes, 100% sure she'd spelled each one wrong. Oopsies. WHY was it all so funny sounding. But, okay. Loki. What's that?
The third year raised her hand despite the fact that she had absolutely no idea what a Loki was. "Is it because he was low key? Loki kind of sounds like that, right? And low key people are probably less uptight so they like to play jokes and things." She blushed slightly and put her hand down, picking up her quill and placing the tip on her parchment again. Time to take notes on all the answers that were right-er than hers, then.
Angel looked at the Professor as he asked her a question. "How about the Atmospheric Charm then Professor." Angel thought that she would at least attempt to answer the question.
Angel then listened to what the Professor said to the whole class, she raised her hand. "Professor, isn't he the son of a God, who wants to rule the world one day and so he tries to do anything to trick his brother into giving him control of things, like one minute he could try and help you but he only does it for his own purpose." Angel thought she would guess.

LOKI!!! Zander knew plenty about that guy! Read tons about him in his dad's old comics. Huh? But how'd this have anything to do with Runes?... Maybe old man Botros was feeling generous and just throwing out a nice question to go easy on-- Huh? The Gryffindor tilted his head as he listened to some of the other answers in the room. Oh. Oh man, they weren't talking about that Loki... Were they?
The Prefect had to give it some more thought then, scratching his head as he listened. He'd read over this part in his textbook. That much he was sure of... But... How much of it he remembered, uh, he wasn't actually that sure. Hm. Zander had to think like REALLY hard for this trying to recall what all he read. It was that day that he'd been thinking about lunch. Oh Merlin, no wonder he couldn't remember the textbook...
"He's uh, got red hair, Professor.. Which is pretty ironic considering, uh, god of fire and stuff.." Right? He remembered the hair. Sort of.

Ah yes, but of course. Norse mythology, Odin and Loki. Yes, Bambi knew these topics extensively.
Not.
Frowning and feeling decidedly boorish this fine morning, Bambi stared at everyone who regurgitated Loki's life story like it was as common as Harry Potter himself. Which, it was not. She'd know. She knows stuff too.
Raising her hand, she attempted. "He, er was a master trickster... and good at disguises," yes, that was it. She'd read that somewhere at some point. She thought. In some colourful muggle thing maybe? She couldn't remember.

…………Was Adi ignoring him? Kevin looked next to him and the raised an eyebrow at the Prefect before he looked back to the front. Whatever, not his problem.
A grin had appeared on his face when the Professor said that he had been right, unlike that other student which boosted his ego even more. Though that meaningful smile was weird to him though. Again, whatever.
Listening to the next piece of information as the Professor started talking about Norse mythology. Which basically was were runes came from right? Mweh, he probably had to pay at least some attention. He placed his elbow on the table and rested his chin in the palm of his hand. What did he know about Loki? Well, the answers he had in mind were already being said by the other students and Kevin rolled his eyes at them. But other than that there was something else Loki was and that was…. “My competition” he said with a grin. “Or am I his competition? “ he asked no one in particular and frowned, looking confused.

Made notes?
Layla was doing exactly that. Ancient runes was not one of those subjects you could just pick up on a whim. They were complicated and seemingly pointless things but Professor Botros seemed to know what he was talking about and despite the complicated methods of practice, she was always willing to be open-minded about the subject. She never knew, there was every possibility she might actually do well in it come NEWT year.
She was choosing not to answer the questions for the sheer fact that she was not willing to make a complete and utter fool of herself. Truth was she didn’t actually know the answers and she was much more content with listening to others speak of them than divulge into participation. She would later if there was an activity of course but for now she was satisfied.
No but seriously what was everyone going on about? She frowned. The only time she had heard of Loki was through various media outlets. She had never become accustomed to the Norse gods and goddesses, nor the other variations there were in ancient history. In her muggle school they learned about British history, like the Tudors and Boudicca, not what they were talking about today. She sighed, most probably audibly and instead listened to what others were producing. Shapeshifting and what-not?
How exactly was this related to runes? Still, she was going to attempt something from the minimal amount of information that she knew because she seemed to be the only member of the class that wasn’t participating. She raised her hand. “Wasn’t he known for defying the rules of social expectations and the physical laws of nature.” Something to do with shapeshifting into a female horse. Layla wasn’t totally sure of it exactly but she assumed that was why he was considered a ‘trickster’. He could change his form.
Toothless - Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror - DoctorDonna
See this was why Ancient Runes was surely not one of his better subjects. It might even be one of his worst if not the worst of his lessons. Benny was trying his best to participate but at the moment all he was doing was listening and taking notes and trying to make sense of what Professor Botros and his fellow students were saying in response to the man's question. And vice versa to their answers.
When the class moved on with the focus settled on Loki, the Gryffindor tried to think of what he knew about him. To be honest most of it revolved around him being Norse and being a trickster and that was all said by the professor even before the question was raised. Adi certainly knew more, Benny listening to his friend's answer about hid parents and such. He could try for an answer he supposed. To show he was listening.
"Like others said, he could shapeshift and liked to play tricks on people and other gods. He was just a tricky person...um god to really know was his true face was or if there was any truth in his words and actions. "

It really paid off to remember things and study, because she had given a good answer. Awesome since this was one of the subjects she had worked her butt off on in order to understand better.
After recording more notes it seemed that the subject moved on to Norse mythology and Loki. Lux was tempted to say that Loki was in the Thor movies as well as The Avengers movie, but she knew that wasn't what Professor Botros was really asking about. Since others were saying what she would have contributed herself, she decided to remain silent for this one and take more notes.
"Loki could make people see things, like change his surroundings in people's minds right?" Margo smiled she felt confident in her answer! "Was he called the trickster for making other people see things that weren't real?" Margo smiled she felt good about it...
But then wait.......maybe that was the movie Loki.....wait........what? Now Margo had herself confused... "Then again....maybe not." Margo added blushing deep red...now she was embarrassed she ever raised her hand.

Notes? Umm, no, she wasn't taking them. Which was pretty dumb on her part because she needed all the help she could get in this class. Oh, but it really wasn't needed. Good. Nothing to worry about then.
Moving on...
Loki? Like the dude in the movie? Or was she totally confused. She listened to what others were saying and decided that maybe she was a confused. Um. What did she know about him? Ummm.... there were gods, giants and slayings. OH MY! What could she add that nobody else had said? You see AJ had a hard time paying attention in this class.
Okay, she really didn't have anything else to add. Shapeshifting had been said a million times over, and 'ditto' just seemed kind of lame so instead of adding anything she took notes. Look at her being all smart and stuff.

Take notes? Tia had been doing that feverishly since Botros began his lesson. Odin was the father of Runes? Well there went her theory of Botros being the father of runes ... he was just a runes scholar . Heh. Shaking her hand subtly in the air to give it a rest from writing, she realized in her feverish writing that she missed a question.
And now they were speaking of Norse mythology - specifically the got known as Loki. What did she know of him? Besides him being a trickster? Twirling her hair around her quill, Tia frowned thoughtfully, trying to think of something unique. That hadn't been said.
Raising her quill hand, after racking her brain for something, Tia began, "The etymology of the name Loki remains a mystery. Some say it relates to the word Luka, which means close, but alternative translations have been Loptr derived from Lopt, which means air. Personally I think both can be connected to Loki as a trickster, because in order to trick someone, you have to be close to them to know what can fool them."

Why hadn't she gotten her hug for answering correctly? Dot made little wiggling fingers at the professor to let him know she was willing to be hugged, just in case he was shy about it. She required assurance she wasn't terrible at this class.
And now something about lowkey. Dot flipped through her book again, listening as her classmates just answered off the top of their heads. How did they know so much... oh. Not lowkey. LOKI. The guy was right there in her book. "He's a god in Norse mythology, and that's like... the ancient religion of Scandinavia." That seemed sort of lame, so she added in a burst," And he could turn into a seal!"
Oh she saw that grin and nod, Professor. And that statement, that statement about writing the ideas of her classmates down as notes. She heard that too. He said it wasn't vital though, but Amur didn't believe it. Her senses were tingling. Pop. Quiz.
Like a madchild, Amur opened her book and began scribbling down all the combinations of spells and runes she could remember. Hagalaz and Stupefy...Algiz and Protego... Ansuz......
Her writing began to slow and dwindle into absent arches and lines as the present conversation derailed her distraction. Loki? A god. A trickster. Firey red hair. Turns himself into a fly?
Amur's scribbling stopped and she blinked. Several times. This was one of those moments where the brain wheels kept turning, but nothing tangible came out. She couldn't pull anything out of memory about any Loki.
But maybe she could pull that all time famous trick...her hand went up. "Professor, did he create a series of fake runes to...uh...trick people?" Answer a question, with a question.

Yep, notes were being taken here.
Anyway, Loki? The only Loki she'd ever heard of was from a movie, but she didn't think that that was the one Professor Botros meant. So, Heather sat listening and waiting for his explanation. Though, some of the stuff she was hearing sounded straight up ridiculous. Changing into a fly? And the bit about Scandinavia had her shaking her head and ready to argue. But she didn't.
Though, did the movie Loki steal some things from legend Loki.......? Nope, better not risk it.

As always, she took Botros' comments seriously--even if it was a 'good job.' It made her feel all warm inside. He was like warm cookies on a cold winter day. Heh.
Underlining a few of the runes she had written down on her parchment, Beverly considered the following question. Her dad and Kennedy often had heated discussions concerning runes and the like and she sometimes joined for the fun of it. This had been one of their discussions at some point a while back.
"One of his famous tricks is the death of Balder," she said after raising her hand. "He took advantage when he heard from Frigg that all things had sworn not to harm Balder except the mistletoe because Frigg didn't find it harmful. Loki then tricked a blind god to throw the branch of a mistletoe, which ended up piercing through Balder and killing him." Quite cunning, that Loki.
