Jasmine checked her notes before proceeding with the scanning process. As instructed, she opened the scanner and looked for the place to insert her negatives. When she found the slot imprinted with the the little film strip, she knew what to do next. Picking up her first strip of negatives by the edges, Jasmine carefully blew on it to remove any random debris. Turning it from one side to the other, she made sure that it looked clean. When she was satisfied that there was no dirt to ruin her images, she was ready to scan.

Jasmine turned the negatives over once more to determine which side was the shiny side. When she had figured that out, she turned the shiny side toward the glass on the scanner and slid the negative into the slot. Just to be safe, Jasmine checked her notes again. She didn't want to come this far, just to mess up everything.

While she had the negatives all ready to go and laid out in front of her, Sophie had to recheck her notes to read ahead and know ALL of what she was going to be doing next, even though she'd already read it half a dozen times before. She just wanted to be SURE she knew what she was getting herself into now that it was the time and place to actually DO it and get it right. She wasn't sure why she cared so much, really, as she didn't NEED Muggle Studies to be a Wandmaker and a Potioneer, but...

Maybe it just came down to a pride thing. Soph didn't want to fail at something. She wanted to be good at all the things she could be and not disappoint anyone. It was immensely important to her that people were proud of her and thought highly of her.

That kind of pressure was already making her sweat.

All right. Shiny side facing the glass of the scanner... Soph identified the shiny side of one of the strips and squinted at what she figured was the appropriate slot. With that shinier side facing the glass, she slipped it into the slot and referenced her notes once more, just to be safe - closing the lid. That was easy, so she did that, and... press WHICH button to scan it into the computer?

Soph grunted a little and rose to her feet, hovering over the scanner and identifying the button she had used to turn on the device first, then looked for the button that she needed to press now - which was... probably the one with the word 'scan' written next to it. Eh hem. She realized then that she was worrying over nothing, pressed the button, and sat back down in front of the computer to peeeeer at the screen and the little window that popped up. She had to reference her notes once more to keep straight what she had to do next, which was to select the option to print negatives. She read the little menu on the monitor and moved the mouse carefully to select the correct option and actually smiled a little at her success.

She was a PROFESSIONAL at this using the computer stuff, man. Mo would have been so proud.

Now he was sat back down and ready to print again, Toby found himself hesitating. He'd managed to talk himself into believing that it totally WOULD be okay if the other photos were a little off, but now doubted that. He wanted pretty pictures, ones that had been developed nicely. If anything, he wanted to make sure there wasn't something he could fix before going through the process of printing four more photos off.

With a little nod of determination, Toby reached across and opened the scanner. It was a little fiddly, but he managed to carefully slide the negatives back out without getting more fingerprints on them. The Hufflepuff held them up to the light, so that he could get a clearer view of any more issues.

Well, there was that first one, with a clear fingerprint on it. Two, in fact, probably from when Toby had absentmindedly picked them up before even heading to the technology centre that day. He'd not even thought about it at the time, but there it was.

Other than that... there wasn't really anything else. It wasn't until Toby looked at the scanner glass that he noticed the smudges on THERE. WELL, that simply wouldn't do. The Hufflepuff pulled his sleeve down over his hand and veeeeeeeery carefully wiped at the glass to try and clean it a bit. When it was as clean as he could get it, he blew any dust away from his negatives again and slotted them back in. He was having a re-do.

Tobias closed the lid of the scanner again, pressed the button, and clicked alllll those options again, the one to print negatives in the scanner moniter, set the resolution to 300 ppi and the file as a JPEG. When all that was done, he clicked 'scan' again. Okay. This would be the one.

Sophie felt okay about everything so far, so she pressed forward, still referencing the instructions every step of the way. She had to make sure the resolution was set to... 300... ppi... whatever that was, but she found the place to do that, too, on the menu and did so. She didn't know what JPEG stood for either and why the file needed to be set at that, but it didn't really matter to her - as long as everything came out all right, she was going to do whatever she was told to do. Heh.

So, she selected 'JPEG' from the files listed and sat back in her chair, reviewing her notes once more and comparing them with everything on the monitor in front of her.

Was... she... ready to go? Was everything correct now?

It looked that way and she wiggled in her seat a little nervously, a little excitedly, but mostly dreading the possibility that something could STILL go wrong even though she was sure she had done everything exactly as her notes said. But, she got on with it, clicking the 'scan' button and waiting with big eyes as all five of the images from the negative were suddenly appearing on the screen before her very eyes. SO COOL! She grinned at all of her pictures, though she noticed one in particular had a weird sort of smudge on it that she KNEW wasn't on her slide when she was handling it! Merlin. Well.

She just wouldn't print that one, then.

But she selected one that looked okay on the screen and selected it, then hit PRINT and bounced excitedly as the photograph emerged from the printer. And it looked awesome.

Wicked.

There wasn't much left for him to do, so he casually swiveled on his chair as he elected to print out the remaining two photos that had been scanned into the computer. One. Click Print. Two. Click Print.

He was good at waiting games, when he didn't have to sit perfectly still, and at the moment he was perfectly content with spinning and swiveling.

Once the remaining two pictures were printed, he collected them and added them to his small pile. Zeke removed the negative from the scanner, and turned it off after closing the lid. Closing the pop-up's that were open on the computer, Zeke clicked on the menu and shut down his computer - figuring nobody else would be using it any time soon... or would they? Meh.

Packing his things up, Zeke quickly crossed off the last item on his homework list, double checked he didn't leave anything behind and then pushed in his chair. He was all set to complete the Q&A and submit it now. Wooop.

With everything in its rightful place, in the same way he had found it, Zeke left the technology lab.

* Use a scanner attached to the computer in the technology center
* Make sure the computer and scanner are both turned on.
* On the lid of the scanner when you open it, you should see a slot to insert a sheet of up to five negatives; it is embellished to resemble a film strip. You may need cut your negative strip as you cannot develop more than 5 images at a time; just be careful to not cut the actual image.
* Blow any dust from the negative and be careful not to leave fingerprints or smudges (so as we held it from its edges in class, i would continue to do so in handling it)
* Insert the negative to scan into the slot with the shiny side facing the glass of the scanner.
* Close the lid and press the button to scan it into the computer.
* A menu screen should pop up onto the computer monitor; select the option to print negatives in the scanner monitor. Resolution should be set to 300 ppi and type of digital file, JPEG.
* Complete the scanning process from your computer, clicking 'scan' on the menu, which will create a digital image saved onto the computer that you can elect to print out as a hard copy. [/s]

Jasmine's first set of negatives was ready to be scanned. She was ready. Nothing to it but to do it then. So why was she hesitating? Jasmine wanted to see her picures, but she was afraid that she might mess up the process or that her pictures would not be good. Well she'd never find out if she didn't print them, would she? "Come on Guidry", Jasmine said to herself. "These pictures aren't going to print themselves."

Taking a deep breath, Jasmine closed the lid. Now she just had to find the scan button. After looking around, she found the right button and pressed it. Then things began to happen.....that was good.....she hoped. Jasmine looked at the computer monitor and saw that she had choices as the menu appeared. Why did they call it a menu anyway? OK Jasmine realized that she really needed to focus more on the task at hand. Turning back to the scanner monitor, she selected to print the negatives. Jasmine checked her notes again and made sure that everything was on the proper setting. Resolution 300 ppi, check. Digital file JPEG, check. Now that everything was set up, Jasmine went back to the computer and hit scan. It shouldn't be much longer now. Jasmine crossed her fingers and waited to see her images.

Apparently it was okay, because she was now faced with the computer making a strange little 'ding' noise and opening up a window with a bunch of options. Adrienne sat down at the chair in front of it and poked the screen, before remembering that no, for computers they had to use this weird thing.

She glanced suspiciously at the mouse and then wiggled it, watching the cursor on the screen move in tandem. She was never going to get the hang of this. Ergh, and there were so many options. Adrienne had no idea what they even meant, but thankfully she'd copied over Professor Hadley's instructions onto a piece of parchment just for this purpose. She verified that yes, indeed, the resolution was 300 ppi - whatever that meant - but the type of digital file was a PNG instead of a JPEG. Seriously, what was the point of all of these letters? Adrienn shook her head, confused, but clicked on the little arrow thing anyway and changed it to JPEG. That was nearly it, right? Yes, and at least the scan button was easy to find. She pressed down hard on the left mouse button, clicking on scan, and voilà! Almost done now.

Jasmine waited and before she could blink twice, the images appeared on the screen before her. Leaning in to get a closer look, she was kinda sorta pleased with her pictures. She felt very good about three of them. Two of them had flaws which would mean that they definitely did not need to be printed. One was blurrier than she would have liked. The other one was just wrong on several levels in her opinion. The lighting was all wrong and the subject had red eyes.

Focusing her attention on the three good images, Jasmine decided to print those. She was no computer expert by any means, but she did know how to print something. She highlighted the first picture that she wanted. Then moving the mouse, Jasmine directed the cursor to the word file and clicked it until the drop down menu appeared. Then she clicked on print. Jasmine heard the printer come to life and knew that her picture would be ready soon. While she was waiting, she looked at the computer and chose which picture she would be printing next.

Finally, her first picture emerged from the printer. Jasmine looked at it and smiled. It was a picture of Henry the Hippogriff in the process of bowing. It looked good to Jasmine so she set it aside. Back to the computer she went for the second round. Skipping one of the questionable pictures, Jasmine clicked on the third one. Then she repeated the previous process ending with a click on print. Annnd...Jasmine went back to the printer to retrieve her second photo. This time it was a picture of the lake, one of Jasmine's favorite places at Hogwarts.

Jasmine still had one more photo to print from this strip of negatives. By now, she had this part of the process down. Highlight the third picture, hit file, click print and wait for the picture to appear. Picture number three was soon completed. Now Jasmine needed to get more negatives and start all over. She could see the finish line in the distance.

Sophie had very much decided that this homework assignment was much easier than the classroom activity had been, and the color had finally returned to her face as she sat back down to admire the printed photograph. It wasn't moving, which was a little weird to her just because all the pictures moved at Hogwarts, but it was nice all the same. She set it aside in its own little spot and turned back to the computer, her expression of the utmost determination. ONE DOWN, FOUR TO GO.

...But she needed to find out why that one picture had scanned into the computer weird. Did it matter a whole bunch? She didn't know. Looking back at the monitor, she still had the option of printing off any of the four other photographs that she had scanned in successfully. Well, she certainly wasn't going to print off the one with the smudge on it, but there was one other she liked on this slide that she selected, then she pressed 'print' again to print that one off.

The second one printed off just as well as the first had and she could have KISSED it out of pure joy for a second success, but she didn't. Instead, she set it atop the other image to start a pile of successful photographs and turned back to the scanner. Determined. Focused. And... very curious at why that ONE had a smudge on it.

She lifted the lid of the scanner and carefully slid the negative off the glass, picking it up by the edges and examining it closely, holding it up to the light so she could see through it - but there were no smudges there, nor was there any dust or anything she could SEE that would have made the difference. But then she turned her attention to the glass itself, her eyes narrowing at the inanimate object in accusation as she leaned in close to peek at it - a-ha. There were various smudges all over the glass of the scanner and she assumed she had set her negative slide atop one of them. Absuuuurd, the students of Hogwarts were. But also... she was probably at fault for not thinking about checking THAT for smudges, too, she knew that.

Using her cotton sleeve, she gently wiped at the glass, clearing the surface of all the fingerprints she could see until it looked suitable to try another slide. She set the already-scanned one aside and picked up a new negative strip of five images, inspecting it closely and brushing a few small specks of dust that had already accumulated on it, before setting the shiny side face-down on the glass, closing the lid of the scanner once more, and hitting the 'scan' button. Positioning herself in front of the computer again, she squinted, a jolt of panic surging through her as the menu didn't come up right away - but after a few seconds, it did, and she let out a slow, soft sigh of relief. She had already gone through all of this before so she felt more confident this time, first selecting the option to print the negatives, then she made sure the resolution was set to 300 ppi and the file type to JPEG.

Her options for pictures this time were good, and she leaned toward the monitor to squint at all five images - not a smudge or speck of dust to be seen! Ha! She selected one of the images and clicked the 'print' button, grinning away in anticipation, and rushed to see her completed picture as it printed from the printer - and it came out perfectly, so she added it to the pile, the broadest of grins playing upon her lips. THREE DOWN, TWO TO GO.

She was so good at this.

A preview of what had been scanned popped up on the screen much like it had before, except this time Toby could see that the quality, even of the first image, was much much better. He checked through each of the pictures to make sure this was the case, and nodded to himself before highlighting the second image and clicking 'Print'. He could have printed out that first image again, but this was supposed to be a learning experience, and repeating that first one felt a little bit like cheating.

Toby wandered back over to the printer and stood there, holding a hand out expectantly around where he knew the device would spit out the photo. A few moments and... aha, there it was. Tobias inspected it on the way back to his seat, not wanting to linger near the printer in case someone else was about to use it, and inspected the photo again.

This was the one that had had a teeny tiny fingerprint smudge on the edge of the negative, but was otherwise okay, and the final result showed that perfectly. Aside from some blurring down the left hand side, the picture was of pretty good quality, though of course the smudge was a lot bigger in photo form given that it had been blown up.

As he sat back down, Tobias lay the photo on top of his first one and turned his attention to the computer monitor again. Now all he had to do was print off the rest, which he could do in one sitting. Toby highlighted the third image, clicked the 'print' button, and when he heard the printer start to whir over there he did the same for the fourth picture, and then finally the fifth. By the time he was up and over by the printer again, the first photo had already been produces. Toby took it from the printer tray and looked over it while waiting for the next two.

When he finally had hold of all three, which were better quality than the others (perhaps because he'd not touched that end of the negatives), Tobias returned to his seat once more and placed all five photos into a folder before retrieving the negatives from the scanner and placing those inside too.

So now he was done, and should probably go do the other portion of his homework, sigh. Theory was always the part he least looked forward to. Toby logged off the computer and shut it down, and pressed buttons on the scanner until that, too, was no longer switched on. With his folder of photos safely in hand he left the technology centre, trying to remember where exactly he'd been doing homework before heading here.

With her three printed images complete, Soph sat back down in front of the computer monitor and peeked at the four other images on this negative slide to see if there were any in particular she might want to print, too. There was one she liked a lot, actually, and took a long moment to scrutinize it first on the screen before highlighting the image and clicking 'print' to print that scanned negative, too.

When it was finished, Soph admired it greatly before adding it to the pile, then she opened the lid of the scanner and set the already-scanned negative aside with the other one she already did. She had a couple strips left, but she only needed one more picture to print, so Sophie tried holding them up to the light to see which one might be worth scanning in more than the other. She couldn't tell, for the most part, so she ended up picking one at random, inspecting it for dust or smudges and cleaning it nicely before inserting it shiny side down on the glass of the scanner. She closed the lid, pressed the 'scan' button, and sat back down in front of the computer, PUMPED to almost be done with this, despite how comfortable she had gotten with the process.

After the menu popped up, Soph selected the printing of negatives, the 300 ppi resolution, and the JPEG digital file type. She reviewed everything to make sure she had done it all correctly, which she was sure she had, then clicked the 'scan' button on the computer. As the five images popped up, she looked them over, unimpressed with a few but not terribly disappointed with the others, so she selected one of the nicer ones and clicked 'print.'

Anxious to see if the last and final picture turned out okay, she bounced as she waited by the printer, then eagerly took the printed photograph in her hands as it came out of the printer - and it was a successsss. She smiled to herself, adding the fifth and final printed picture to her pile of photographs, then she neatly compiled her printed photos and the negative slides, including the one still in the scanner, into a folder which she then slid into her bag along with her textbook, scissors, and class notes.

With her workstation all cleaned up and feeling really GOOD about having just done all that work without any huge problems, Soph turned off the scanner and, though it took her a second to find where she needed to go to do it, shut down the computer. And... she was ALL DONE. READY TO GO. WOOP. OFF SHE WENT.

The professor would be so proud of her, wouldn't she?

When her prints were completed, Lux looked through each and was very pleased with the results. Not bad at all. Now she just needed to redo the process for the other two negative strips and she would have a total of 15 photos.

Picking up the next strip she wanted to scan, she blew off any dust while making sure to hold it by the edges. Once she was satisfied she opened the scanner lid and took out the old strip, replacing it with the new one having the shiny side face the glass. After closing the lid, it was simply a matter of pushing the same buttons again and she soon had another five photos printed. Repeating the process again with the last strip of negatives, she soon had all 15 printed and she was so pleased with herself for the amazing job she had done with them.

After carefully placing the photos between two of the pages in her notebook, Lux made sure to properly turn off the technology that she had been using. She knew pretty well how the computers and other equipment worked by now since she used this room sometimes. It was pretty fun to play with muggle technology, though she wasn't familiar with all of the computer programs, only using a few of them.

Once everything was turned off, Lux packed everything away in her bag and left the room so she could get something to eat for lunch.

It was time to start the process all over again so Jasmine reached for another negative strip. She held it up toward the light and tried to guess what images might be contained on them. It was hard to tell because they seemed rather dark. Jasmine hoped that this was not indicative of how her images would turn out. Blowing gently on the negative, she tried to free it of any debris. Turning the strip shiny side down, Jasmine fed it into the proper slot in the scanner. This strip had four images. Hopefully there would be something there that she could use.

Jasmine closed the lid of the scanner and hit the scan button. She chose to print the negatives. Then once again , she went to the computer and checked the resolution. Well of course it hadn't changed from her previous attempt so she was good to go. She then hit the scan button on the computer and waited for the images to appear. Looking at the images she was pleased to see that they had all come out fairly well. One was a little grainy, but she didn't have to print that one. Jasmine decided to print the other three. One by one, she clicked on the images, went to file and clicked print. The anticipation was killing her as she waited for the photos to print. At last she could see all three of them and Jasmine deemed them acceptable. These along with her previous photos would probably be the keepers. Now that she was feeling more comfortable with the whole process, Jasmine went ahead and printed the rest of her pictures....the ones that looked good anyway.

When she had finished everything, Jasmine cleaned her work space, put her photos away and packed up her things. Now she just had to complete the rest of her homework assignment.

Since he was done with the five pictures in his first set, Benny opened up the scanner again and took out the sheet of negatives from the machine. He set it carefully aside before swapping it for one of the other negative sheets he had cut from his original collection. Once it was securely in the scanner the Gryffindor closed the cover of the machine and waited for it to cycle through and be acknowledged by the computer.

Come on menu...come on menu.

Thankfully it soon appeared on the computer screen once more so he could go through the process again. First scanning each of the negatives into the computer, then checking after each one was in if he wanted to print them out. Ben opted for printing two out of the second set of five and took a final two from the last set to round it off to a collection of six finished photos in all. That should be good for Hadley's homework. Finishing up, he cleaned and put away all of the belongings he had brought with him, leaving when he was done .

Know something? After Muggle Studies, Lex had a new look on how Muggles went about life. Merlin knows they exerted more energy than was needed but nothing to be done about that without a magical camera. All this work and the pictures didn't even move to show for it. Why bother with this method? They were always going on about technology and how it made stuff easier but they couldn't get a picture printed in a shorter time that actually did some movement. Snort. Impressive.

"I'm beginning to think you do even less homework than me." She said to the little Ravenclaw trailing behind her. How did he always seem to be free while she had some homework or another to work it? Must have been the lack of electives. That must have made him ridiculously free.

Lex led Dima over to the computer they'd be using--or well she'd be using, unless he decided this was one of the times he was gonna be 'helping' the way he liked to. "This one." Just had to turn it on....which was...this button...? Sure. Lex pressed the first button she saw and watched the lights come on then did the same with the computer.

Pfft, nothing to it.

"I have PLENTY of homework, I just do it on time." And she didn't, Dima was sure. After all, if she did, they wouldn't be doing this one at the last minute. He was also sure she didn't have very many friends, or she would have more people to accompany her when she did said homework. But since she didn't and was looking SO LONELY on her way to the technology center, he had gone with her like the kind child he was.

Alexa was welcome.

"What are you doing?" Dima watched her click some sort of button, doing his best not to touch anything; he didn't know how this muggle stuff worked. And he didn't want to break anything and make that scary Hufflepuff Head of House lady have his head for it.

No one could be head of the students-dying-all-the-time house and not be crochety, right?

So he didn't wanna get on Professor Cranky's bad side.

Right. On time. Sure. The Professors were lucky she did the homework at all. The homework got done whenever it got done and only because you'd get looks or worse when you showed up to a class without the homework having been done. "You're such a Ravenclaw." She remembered that one time they played that 'don't be a Ravenclaw' game. If things got bad enough, they'd have to go back to that.

"We're making pictures...I think. I dunno but these buttons turn the machines on so I pressed them and now..." Hang on, she didn't actually know this stuff off the top of her head. Alexa reached into her bag and reached for the parchment she'd written the instructions on to. "Now we open this thing." She demonstrated, lifting the lid. "See that right there? That's where the strips are gonna go but we'll need to cut them."

Lex pulled the strips she'd taken with her from her bag as well and handed a few to him. "You'll need to know this one day." In fact...she reached over and turned the computer and scanner next to her on as well. "Keep those--don't botch them up. Open that lid like I showed you then cut the strips because they shouldn't have more than five." Was he getting this? Even as she explained she got to cutting her own strips into fours.

There.

"Blow the dust off but don't touch the surface itself." Where was anyone to see what a good teacher she was? She even held it up so he could see how to hold it! Clearly she was a giver.

"You can't put me in a category just because I do my homework on time," Dima retorted immediately. On the contrary, he was very, very unintelligent, and the reasons he was a Ravenclaw had not a thing to do with homework, thanks.

... what? He didn't at all understand what they were doing, but he obediently chopped up the strip into fifths with his wand like Lex had instructed. It was neater than licking the papery stuff and ripping it with his fingers, after all. Except.... what now? "What are we blowing the dust off?" Huh? The thing he'd just cut up? He was so confused, but he held it from the edges like she said and blew obediently.

What kind of class was this?

He was doing it, the thing she was about to tell him NOT to do and she was gonna flick him on the forehead for being so damn literal but thought better of it because then he'd start whining and she had homework to finish. It was best she didn't spend too long in here, as she'd learned after the time she broke one of the computers--but really it wasn't her fault. Hadley said to push buttons and that's what she did. These things were just delicate.

"Good." She said, noting that he'd done everything she said, despite the confused look on his face. 'Least he wasn't trying for a game of twenty questions.

She took a set of negatives into her hand and placed them onto the scanner while she went on explaining for Dima's benefit. "Insert the negative into the slot with the shiny side facing the glass of the scanner, like this." She gestured to her own in case he hadn't actually seen the moment she did it before shutting down the lid and hitting the only button that said 'scan'. Lex might not have known to use this but she could read!

"Close the lid like I did when you're done then hit scan."

Uhhhhhhhhhh what was a negative? Dima looked entirely perplexed again until he saw Lex slide the papery stuff into the slot. Oh, that. He was about to mimic her before he caught his reflection in the glass, which was when the kid got immediately distracted. Hehe. Fish face.... bug eyes........ bunny ea-

Lid? What?

Blinking a bit, the second year placed his negative into the slot a good bit later than instructed. Still, he did it right, placing it to face the glass and all. Then he closed the lid and hit the scan button, just as the Head Girl had.

Was he lost again?

Lex watched Dima while the scanning thingy made the little machine noises that muggle things sometimes made. Apparently that's how you knew it was working...or so she'd been told but she'd gotten too far now to start questioning things. Alexa continued watching Dima til he'd caught up then looked to her screen again. "I need you to watch what I do because this is a little more complicated." She said, gesturing to her screen where a box window thingy had popped up.

Lex selected the option to print the negatives in the scanner window monitor thingy. The thing that said resolution was set to 300 ppi and after hitting that she chose the file type to be JPEG. Did he catch all that? Because she didn't think she'd be able to do it again. Now all that was left was eslecting the 'scan' on the menu then the print button because why not?

PLEASE tell her he caught all that.

Dima had pretty much lost interest in whatever sort of junk they were doing noe and had cheerfully wandered away from his computer and printer to go make fish faces in another printer's glass. Uh... complicated stuff? No thank you.

"Just finish it yourself and use it as one of your five," he waved her off.

And then continued his face making.

Oh? Maybe she'd take it back afterall. Not so diligent on the more complicated aspects of work huh? Well good on him, there was hope. Dima didn't have to be completely taken over by the blue robes. That was a relief, such a relief in fact that she didn't mind that he'd stopped working, she simply got back to work, repeating the process several times (4 more times to be exact) until she got some pictures printed.

These were the ones from class, weren't they?

Yeah...she could kinda remember taking these and taking one of Dima who'd snuck in and been asleep beside her. Come to think about it, kid was seeming even less like a Ravenclaw, fancy that.

"That's the last of them." She said, stacking them all neatly and placing them back into her bag. You can stop making faces now, we're leaving.
