Practical Homework in the Dueling Arena

Despite the chilly weather they were experiencing, the inside of the arena was warm and toasty. The windows were closed however, icy on the outside, making it difficult to see through, yet the sun shined just fine into the large room. Was that a pine smell in the air? Maybe the aroma of a cozy fire too? Perhaps the large fireproof container glowing a brilliant orange with a flicker of flames appearing above it every now and then sitting in the middle of the floor where Professor Romanos stood had something to do with it. Every now and then, a fiery red salamander swiftly crawls out and scampers around the arena. Freeze them quick before they get away!

And also, if you'd be so kind as to put them back into the flames after you successfully freeze them.

Ian walked into the dueling arena. He wasn't particularly familiar with it other than class. It was cool outside but walking into the arena, he felt it's warmth. He decided he needed to remove his robes so that he had better freedom of movement. He wasn't particularly suited to having flowing sleeves and long cloaks because he liked things that moved without impeding.

He walked around to familiarize himself with what was going on. He was about to step when he looked down and noticed a salamander scurrying over to the fire. He wasn't quick enough with his wand and the freezing spell he attempted as he jabbed his wand was unsuccessful at freezing the salamander, though it created a nice slick spot on the floor.

Fire Salamanders.

He was excited by this. Not just because this was the practical portion of the assignment, but also because he was OFFERED a fire salamander. It was going to be his birthday present before he asked for a broom instead. Needless to say, he was still interested in having one.

Entering the dueling arena, Zeke plopped his bad by the door and took himself, and his wand deeper into the room. It was SOOOOO nice and warrrrrmmm.. could he just like, stay here all day? Was that an option? He considered this plan a moment longer as he neared the flames in the centre of the room. But then....

....

A THING scuttled out.. and wandered around and... ZOMG!! DON'T GET AWAYYY!

"Heeyyy!! You'll burn the castle down!" Zeke said at it, before he realised it couldn't understand him, and that it likely wouldn't care even if it did.

Wand at the ready, Zeke pursued it, wanting to close the gap before jabbing his wand anywhere.

He jogged a few paces and then paused, bracing himself. "Glacius!" he stated clearly with the purest of intentions toward the fire lizard thing.

He missed. The spell hitting the wall on the other end. The wall? MAAANNN... what was wrong with his aim!?

"Glacius!" he tried again, this time training his wand DOWN to the floor part, and indeed, he WAS aiming at the floor. A patch of ice formed where he had hit it. The salamander scuttled off further and he followed.

"Glacius!" Jab!

Third time lucky perhaps? He cause he'd hit it. Quickly he went to go and collect it, and picking up the now frozen salamander, he inspected it more closely while he had the chance. Hehe. It was pretty neat. Actually rather COOOL - pun intended. But he had to return it to the fire, yes? Or it might die? Something like that, so he wasted no time in approaching the cluster of flames and dropping it inside.

Shin had come to the arena to practice his use of freezing spells that he had learned during his Defense Against the Dark Class. As he entered the room he noticed the room was blisteringly warm compared to outside, he had dressed according to the chilly weather with that of a cardigan but once inside he decided to take off his cardigan and tied it around his waist. As he stood in the room he looked about the room and noticed a salamander upon the other side of the room, Shin took the wand out of his pocket and eyed it then eyed the salamander. His homework was to practice the uses of freezing charms Shin loved charm spell so he was excited to practice this spell.

Earlier he was able to actually conjure the spell he found the spell quite interesting but now was a good time to test to see if he could actually land the spell with a moving target. Before it was with a wall since it didn't move it was easy to accomplish. Shin slowly crossed the room at this moment the salamander had his back towards him. Tiptoeing Shin raised his wand "Glacius" the words slipped out with a chuckle as a blue light sent out from his wand. The light looked to be dancing about in the air rising towards the target that was the salamander. Once the spell had landed it was obvious his aim was off as the spell only grazed the foot of the salamander before hitting the floor.

At this point the salamander had noticed he was there shaking off where the spell had hit him it turned to face Shin. Looking into black eyes of the salamander Shin could notice that he was anger at the fact that Shin had used a spell upon him while his back was turned. At the point the salamander decided to charge at Shin concerned Shin decided to run, as he ran the salamander followed. While running he quickly turned around and shouted "Glacius" again a blue light shot out of his wand but unlike before the spell had missed and formed a ice patch upon the ground. Sighing with a chuckle Shin continued his run as the salamander continued its pursuit. Eventually Shin turned around and notice the salamander had stopped chasing him Shin again looked at the salamander and noticed at the moment the salamander had become exhausted from the running. Shin felt like he wasn't far reaching that point of exhaustion.

He noticed if he didn't take advantage of this he was gonna lose to the salamander. So with a quick pace he got up close this time close enough that he was sure to hit the salamander "Glacius" the blue light hit the salamander and it stopped frozen in place. Sweat dripping down his face from the mix of heat and exhaustion Shin tucked his wand into his pocket and decided to step outside to cool off.

The very second he'd returned the frozen salamanda to its nest of flames in the container thing, another escaped. What the? ... WHYYY were they getting out? Why couldn't he just take them out to practice on? Huh?

Never mind the fact that doing that would require plunging his hand into a container of flames and hot things. So, maybe it was better this way.

But MEEEEEEEEEP! WHERE'D IT GO?! Snapping out of his thoughts, Zeke scanned his surroundings. Where was that rascally fiery lizard? HUHHHH?

Pacing around the container, Zeke spotted it huddling against one side of the surface, but not for long, as it took off again, scuttling across the floor, it's tail fanning one way and the next as it went. "I won't hurt you," he said to it, walking behind it. It was actually rather pretty, the way that they GLOWED, like they were made of hot coals instead.

"It might be uncomfortable, but you'll defrost or... unfreeze, eventually..." he encouraged, taking a few more steps around it in an attempt to block its path. Did lizards notice things like that? Or would it set fire to his shoes? It DID get closer and for fear of his robes catching fire, as well as his shoes, Zeke jumped backward a short way.

Jabbing his wand at his target, Zeke practiced the charm once more. "Glacius." He didn't miss this time, and just as he had with the last, he picked up the frozen little guy and stroked the top of his head. Admiring the salamanda before returning it.

"Actually... are you a lizard thing? Like... a reptile? Or are you an am... amphibian?" Was that the word? Meh.. sounded right to him. It might also be something he would have to look up soon, especially if he wanted to do the extra credit question.

DADA salamander 1

Ian watched the flames carefully. He needed to get this done. He noticed some other lads come in and he returned his focus to the fire. A salamander began to scurry out of the flames. Ian tried to be ready by pointing his wand at the fire, but he was off by a little bit. He quiickly adjusted and fired off a GLACIUS! as he jabbed in the general direction of the creature. SUCCESS! Ian noted as the salamander stood frozen in place where it had been when Ian struck it with the freezing spell.

He walked up to it, and carefully picked it up. Didn't want to drop it and make it smash into little bits. He held it by the tail over the flames and dropped it in. He then resumed his position to catch another.

Samantha carefully looked around for the elusive salamander. Finally, she spotted one near the wall and pointed her wand at the creature and said, "Glacius!" Now the salamander was now frozen mid-step. Samantha walked over to the salamander, carefully picking it up and gently placing it back in the fireplace so that no harm was done to the animal.

"Hiya!" he greeted with a one-handed wave. The other was still holding the frozen salamander, slowly lowering it to the flames. He didn't like the idea of just DROPPING them in, but yeah, you know... fire. He imagined though that they were kinda like cats, and landed on their feet, or well.. they were kinda flat so maybe that helped? Who knew, he was no veterinarian. "How many you got so far?" he asked, curious.

He'd caught two himself, so he really only needed one more. Three was sufficient practice according to the notice, but he wouldn't object to sticking around a little longer than that.

It was just then that he caught sight of a lizard climbing out of the flames... slowly.. so it hadn't made it's fun for it yet.

LOTS of homework for this lesson. Toby wasn't so fond of the parts where he had to read and write, so he'd not even LOOKED at all that yet. He'd decided instead to focus on the practical portion first, eager as he was to get more and more practice in on the spell he'd started to master.

Ooh boy, it sure was warm in here. The rest of the castle had fires blazing all over, but this room was way toastier than even the Hufflepuff common room.

Toby didn't really think about that for very long though, because he had a spell to practice. He was unsure if they should use anything but the most basic version of the spell, but figured it was a good idea to practice with that one first in any case. The Hufflepuff moved to a relatively free spot in the room, smiling at the others who were already here as he went, and got his wand out.

Okay, cool, now he just had to wai- SALAMANDER!

Yep, being easily distracted could sometimes work in Toby's favour. Out of the corner of his eye he saw the red creature dart across the floor, and hurriedly pointed his wand at it.

"Glacius!" Toby cast, jabbing his wand at the salamander, but missing it entirely. Moving targets... much more difficult than kettles. Good to know. "Glacius!" he cried again, jabbing his wand at the salamander once more.

This time it hit, but... nothing happened. Uhhh... dud spell? Weird, maybe it was more difficult on alive things?

Toby hurried after the creature in hopes that closing the distance might help him out in terms of both aim and spell efficiency, and tried once more.

"Glacius!"

WHOOSH! That had done it. The salamander froze in its tracks, literally. Toby grinned to himself and stooped to pick it up. He allowed himself a moment or two to look the creature over a little better, before heading to the middle of the room and dropping it in the flames from whence it came.

Now it was time for attempt number two.

"Time to step things up a notch," Samantha thought as she waited for a salamander to emerge. Within a few moments, Sam had performed a forward slashing motion of her wand and said, "Glacius Duo!" which resulted in a frozen salamander situated at the far wall of the duelling arena. Samantha quickly walked over to the animal and placed it back into the fireplace. She was getting quite powerful with regards to her spellwork.

Ian had just dropped his salamander in when he heard someone greet him. He turned to see Zeke, that kid who had helped him instigate the most epic foodfight in the history of Hogwarts in Astronomy. When Zeke asked about how many Ian had captured, Ian shrugged. This is the first one. This freezing spell was hard for me to practice in class because I got my wand stuck in my goblet of water. I called it my goblet-sicle. The professor had to get it out for me. Would have made an excellent club if necessary though. How about you? How many did you get?

Ian looked around for more salamanders that needed a 'little cooling off'. He saw one scurry by Zeke and let Zeke have it, because he didn't want to freeze Zeke to the floor. He still was having trouble with this thing. He hadn't even tried the variations yet.

It was then he saw one skirt on the outside of the flames on the opposite side of Zeke. Ian jabbed into space in the direction of the creature and yelled GLACIUS!

It seemed that performing the final freezing spell was going to be a challenge. Sam was having quite some difficulty in trying to spot a salamander that hadn't been frozen. After about five minutes of carefully scanning the room, Sam spotted one. Being a left hander, Sam performed a clockwise side slash of her wand as she said, "Glacius Tria!" The salamander, along with a tiny aspect of surrounding floor and wall was now encased in ice. Sam moved towards the creature and carefully picked it up and placed it into the fire. She then pointed her wand at the slightly frozen floor and wall, did a little wave of her wand as she said, "Ventus!" Within seconds, the floor and wall were back to normal.

So he was going to face some flaming salamanders this time for homework. This was gonna be dangerous but he was looking forward to it. He was supposed to be working with Clara for the homework. The claw came up to him after the lesson asking to work on the homework. He agreed and thought it might be fun to learn from one another. As he approached the practice arena he saw the Salamanders all ready. He even saw students casting the charm. They were freezing some salamanders and he wondered if he could.

He got his notebook out and checked the wand movements and the Glacius spell was a simple wand movement. It was just a jab. Then he needed to do Glacius Duo and Glacius Tria. He might try those both. He read through the wand movements and understood them. Now the only part was just facing the creature that could burn him. He still waited for Clara before he went any further.

The worst decision Clara had ever made.

That was what asking Kace to assist her with the homework was. Of course, at the time, the Astronomy incident had not yet happened and he'd just been someone who hadn't been claimed and didn't seem annoying. That opinion had obviously changed now. Unfortunately, she wasn't one to back out of a deal ... or plan ..... or whatever this was. So, here she was.

There didn't appear to be too many people around and they were fairly spread out ..... a positive; that would make the situation slightly more bearable. Then there was Kace, there to make it unbearable. She greeted him with a scowl, noting that he was reading over notes - presumably about the salamanders or the spell. Clara was already well read up on them, as well as the spell that they'd need to use to freeze them. She was ready when he was. "Ready?" She snapped the question, taking out her wand, resisting the urge to spin it because ... that would definitely not end well.

As Kace was reading the notes, he looked over and saw Clara making her way. She seemed mad. Maybe she didn't forgive him about the incident in Astronomy. He wanted to clear the air first. "Look I am sorry about the incident in Astronomy....I didn't mean to aim for you but you just happened to be there when the food was being hit.." he said probably digging a deeper hole for himself. He heard her snap and raised his eyebrow. He didn't need to be snapped at like that. "Yeah I am but listen if you are gonna have an attitude, can you contain it?" he asked. "I don't deal with attitudes from my girlfriend and especially not you.." he told her flat out.

After he said his part, he walked towards the salamander and pointed his wand and said, "Glacius!!" and then he saw the frostyness come out of his wand and saw the Salamander freeze. He grinned and glad it worked. He knew he could conjure this spell confidently. He was gonna do the rest of it after he saw Clara attempt. "Ready?" he snapped back.

Okay, well... Glacius had worked okay, after a couple of tries, and it seemed like other kids were trying the other variations of the spell, so Toby decided to do that too. The salamanders seemed fine with it.

He stood there, wand raised and staring at the container in the middle of the room. Unfortunately, it wasn't long before Toby's attention wandered, and he found himself watching other students work instead of looking for his own target. His focus wasn't brought back until a few minutes later, when out of the corner of his eye Toby saw movement, and quickly whipped his head around to look.

TWO fiery red salamanders had darted out from the flames, just off to Toby's left. He raised his wand, and attempted the spell.

"Glacius Duo!" With a forward slash of his wand, Toby sent the spell at the closest of the two salamanders, but missed again and froze part of the floor. The creatures avoided the icy stone beneath them as Toby tried again. "Glacius Duo!"

Another forward slashimg motion with his wand, and the spell was off. This time, it HIT one of the salamanders, which froze instantly. Granted... Toby had been aiming for the other one, but that was an unimportant detail, okay?

Grinning, and mighty pleased with himself, Toby carefully scooped up the now frozen salamander and hurried over to drop it carefully into the flames. But when he turned back to try a spell on the second fire dwelling creature... it had gone, scuttled off. Rats! Toby looked around the floor, still with his wand raised, fully intending to find and freeze the creature, unless someone else got to it first.

...................

................................................

What?

Clara gaped at him, utterly taken aback. She had not expected Kace to be so ... uh ... like that. He was a Hufflepuff, wasn't he? They were supposed to be the fair and just ones, not the snappy and rude. It took a few moments for her to regain her composure, but once she did she narrowed her eyes at him even more, practically squinting at him. "What?" Was he serious?

Well, if he was going to act like this, then so could she. Though she'd do it much better. "I said one word to you. One. Word." Scowl. That needed to be pointed out first and foremost. "I don't really care too much that you hit me. I could get over that. What I really don't want is to associate with someone that would throw food around for fun. Especially when that lesson was obviously ... not right and there were people there ... me included ... that didn't want to be there." Did he understand where she was coming from? The only person she could forgive for flinging food was Gabe. He'd done in defence ... to try and get out.

As for the 'attitude' comment.

"All I asked was whether you were ready, that's hardly a snarky question ... and I may have frowned, but that doesn't mean I was going to have an attitude." She probably would have, but that was beside the point. "So far you've been the one to show more attitude than I have." Honestly. "I really don't care about your relationship, but ... are you telling me that you don't give her the right to express herself? That you make her treat you nicely and what ever else you want?" Because that was what she was getting from all of that. "I'm willing to bet you don't think twice about giving her attitude." Now she despised Kace, but for a completely different reason. Ugh.

............. "So rude," she muttered inaudibly.

One last point. "You're also not the boss of me. You're my equal. If you don't like you way I act, then leave. It makes no difference to me." Now that she'd gotten all of that out, she focused on spotting a salamander. That was why she was here. Not to argue with some ridiculous 'Puff.

It wasn't long at all until a salamander scurried into her vision. The redhead tracked it's movements and speed, estimating where it would be by the time she -- "Glacius!" Clara watched as the spell hit home with pin point accuracy, freezing the salamander in it's place. She'd been convinced she would missed, but her anger had given her a focus that she didn't have before. Just a moment later, she spotted another salamander moving away from her and acted without pausing. She spun on her heel, all but shouted the spell "Glacius," and jabbed her wand in the salamander's direction. It froze instantly and Clara lifted her chin, smiling half-proudly and half-smugly.

Beat that, Hufflepuff.

Tossing her hair over her shoulder, Clara walked over to where the salamanders were and carefully picked them up (including the one he'd left frozen, thank you very much). They were quite fascinating, really. She would have held them for longer and studied them closely if she didn't have more to freeze ... and if she didn't have company. Shame. She then strolled over to the flames and dropped them back into them before turning back to Kace. Hm.

ADI WAS HERE TO FREEZE SOME SALAMANDERS.

Hehe.

Was the pine he smelled? And man, was it warm in here! Awesome! Who wanted to work in the cold anyway? Adi was still quite not in the mood for cold after last term. Anyway, look at that container with the flaaames! And was that a- yeah! It was a salamander sneaking its way out.

"Glacius!''
Annnnd point the wand at the attempted escapee. Perhaps the salamander heard the Hufflepuff's loud voice or perhaps it just sensed it was being attacked but the creature turned and scampered back into the container.

Not that it needed to. Adi had misaimed causing the shot of blue light to hit the wall opposite. Oops.

Come out, come out, wherever you aaaaaaare...

Toby prowled around his little segment of the duelling arena, trying to keep an eye out for that elusive little salamander. Except... Toby didn't really do 'prowling' very well, and was much more of a 'tip-toeing' kind of kid. He was light on his toes, pacing around, but for all he knew the salamander had been frozen by another kid. Hopefully, at least. In any case, the Hufflepuff hoped it would find its way back to the fire somehow.

As he thought this, Toby saw movement, something scampering past him. He turned and raised his wand, ready. He was trying the next level up this time.

"Glacius Tria!" And, uhh... oh.

Toby never finished the spell. Instead, he just stood with his wand pointed straight out, not doing the movement or anything because... he'd forgotten it at the crucial moment. Now he was remembering it was supposed to be a sideways, or anti-clockwise, slashing movement with his wand, and quickly performed that.

Like he'd expected, nothing happened. The gap between incantation and wand movement had been too long.

The boy hurried after the salamander and tried again.

"Glacius Tria!" he cried, voice confident and actually MANAGING the anti-clockwise slashing moment this time. And he DID hit the salamander with the spell (which was... surprising, because moving targets were difficult) but the creature only half froze, and only for a second, before instantly thawing and running off again.

Maybe that version of the spell was pushing it a bit. Toby kinda wanted to be free of this warm room, too, so he decided to fall back on the safe 'Duo' version, and practice the 'Tria' variant in his own time. He pursued the salamander yet again.

"Glacius Duo!" With a forward slash of his wand (and one eye squinted shut so as to get a better aim on the small creature), Toby sent the Freezing Charm at the salamander again. It hit its mark again and, this time, the salamander REMAINED frozen. Toby stood still for a moment or two, just to make sure it wasn't about to un-freeze and scurry off, but no... it looked like the charm had held.

The Hufflepuff put his wand back in his pocket and gently scooped up the salamander, wondering if this was the one he'd been looking for earlier. As he dropped it into the flames, Toby reminded himself that that had made THREE successful spells (or four if you counted that patch of the floor he'd frozen up) so he was DONE!

... Now it was time go do the reading and writing portion. Sigh.

But instead of letting this kill his spirits, Toby remained bouncy as he left the room again with his stuff and headed back to the common room.

Kevin had been inside of the DADA practise room for some time now. He had practised the spell first for a few minutes before going up against a salamander and after a while he was able to do the Glacius spell without any trouble.

He had been walking alongside the wall, avoiding the other students as they casted their spells. He was in a pretty safe spot until a shot of blue light hit the wall a few steps beside him. The Gryffindor jumped in shock. He could have been hit! His eyes looked around for the person who had done that and they narrowed when he found the source.

With his head held high, Kevin marched with big steps towards the Hufflepuff. "YA! Dumbo! you almost hit me!" he shouted, not caring if he was a Prefect or not. "You know, for a Prefect you really suck at this.." Let the master show you how it was done!

Heh. So he should work on his aim. Adi just seemed a little tooooo enthusiastic right now. Must be due to the Chocolate Froggies he had just before coming here. Anywaaay. Dumbo? Who was a dumbo? O_O

The fourth year craned his neck in the direction of the voice. Oh! It was Kevin. And apparently the Lion was calling him a dumbo -__- "I think you should have a little more respect for people, you know.'' And he wasn't saying that because he wanted the respect. Kevin was rude to practically everyone. "Sorry about that. Yeah I know. I doubt they selected me as a prefect because of my spell work,'' he added jokingly. Naaah. Adi was pretty okay when it came to that.

"You froze any yet?''
Just then Adi noticed another salamander. This one had already left the container and was scuttling around. "Bet you I get one this time.'' He took careful aim. "Glacius!''

A HIT!

Awesome! See? He wasn't that bad, Kevin.

Have a little more respect for people. Kevin snorted loudly and shrug his shoulders. He only respected a selected few people and a few of them had died ages ago. He did raise his eyebrow as Adi said he doubted his spell work. Where had he heard those words before? Oh right at the Astronomy tower... "Is that some kind of Hufflepuff thing or something? making fun of yourself ? because this kid ,Shin his name was i think was down-grading himself as well" He looked rather curiously at the Prefect before shrugging his shoulder yet again. Whatever.

"No i haven't, i was still practising the spell in the co---I MEAN" his face turned slightly red as he realised what he had admitted. "I was just watching you losers for a moment" He watched as another salamander had escaped the container and Adi using the spell effectively on the creature. HMPF , just lucky.

The Gryffindor looked around and found a new salamander scurrying towards them. Kevin aimed his wand at the creature and shouted "Glacius!" blue light shot out of his wand and the third year had a grin on his face when the light flew towards the salamander aaaand.....the spell hit the floor a step in front of the creature causing it to run away. "Yeah you better run!" he shouted at the salamander. AHEM.

BAHAHAHAHHA... he got his wand stuck in a goblet. CLASSSIIC! "That's... awesome, hilarious but definitely awesome." Truly, why didn't he think of doing something like that? Hehe. As for him though... "Two so far, onto my last one." Which seemed to be thinking of making a grand escape. "It gets easier the more I do it, I think the thing I have most trouble with is aiming and intent though." And even those didn't hinder him for long.

COME HERE LIZARDY SALAMANDERY THING!

Before it could scoot away very far, Zeke went to freeze it just as Ian froze his second. Only... he had been distracted and so his first shot missed... instead icing up a patch of floor beside where the salamanda was, making it scurry off in the opposite direction.

"Glacius," Zeke repeated, jabbing his wand toward it. Second time around he was successful, and moved to pick it up, replacing his wand as he went - he wouldn't be needing it any more now that he was done.

"What do you think it feels like?" he asked Ian, holding up his frozen lizard!salamander before placing it into the flames.

Edward Penguin 10-10-2014 05:13 PM

Ian looked down a little as he picked up his salamander and tossed him in the flames (didn't hurt them, right?). Yeah. The professor was rather nice about it, but I still feel bad about not being able to practice the other two.

Ian watched as Zeke got another. Pretty cool that you got that many so quickly. Do you come from a magical family then? Ian saw another fire salamander slide out of the flames and he began to follow it, preparing to freeze it. GLACIUS! he said with an emphatic jab at the creature. Success!

How what feels like? So many ways that could be interpreted. Maybe the boy wanted to know what it felt like be frozen, but probably not.

Hm.

Kace took her ranting but was still focused on the assignment. He just couldn't hold back his anger somewhat. He didn't know why. "Well then I am sorry for hitting you.." he said hearing her unnecessary ranting. He didn't even know what came over him. Today was just his snippy day. Plus she was sort of making a scene he didn't really need. "Well maybe I have an attitude because it is not just my day have you ever thought of that?" he asked and then closed his eyes and breathed. "You know what let's just get this done.." he said shaking his head and not looking at her. Obviously she was mad and he would be too.

"I'll just be quiet for the rest of this and prevent things from getting even worse.." he mumbled. Hey puffs were allowed to have snippy moments or bad days. Today was Kace's for some reason. He saw Clara cast the charm and nodded and thought it was excellently performed. "Also about my girlfriend I do treat girls as equals. I treat them with respect and let her express herself. Like I said before I am having a bad day and snapped. I am sure you have some. I didn't appreciate your comments about her." he added on a side note. He couldn't let it go and take it.

He got his wand out and was gonna perform the Glacius Duo spell. The wand movement was the forward slash of his wand. He got his wand out of his robes and did the forward slash and said, "GLACIUS DUO!" and then he freezed the salamander. He went over to pick his salamander up and examined it closely. He was fascinated with it. He was smiling and thought it was cool being up close. Once he was done, he put the salamander back in the fire pit.

He waited for Clara to go and just stood there patiently. If she left him through the lesson, he wouldn't of cared. She obviously was a strong women. He was smiling and laughing actually. She reminded him of Emmy. "Also all of what you said is what my girlfriend would have said. She would have put me in my place." he shrugged. "So for that I am sorry I am snapped.." he grinned just putting what happened past him.

"Don't sweat it, I didn't learn the other two either... figured I'd focus on the basics first you know?" He didn't see the need to get ahead of himself just yet, he'd get around to it eventually. No harm in taking his time. It wasn't as if he was going to be the greatest wizard that ever lived.... while still at school. Ahem.

Ian's other comment got him grinning, though he wouldn't be able to tell you why. "Nahh, I'm muggleborn, but I was adopted into a magical family." Family, yep, that's what it was. He didn't see them as fragmented, as far as he was concerned they were a legit family unit. "My mum's like super awesome and knows everything, she one of the Ministry bosses." He'd have elaborated further, could even talk for hours about them all, but he shouldn't. "How about you?" he asked, curious now to know.

Finished with his work, Zeke tagged along behind Ian, continuing their conversation but staying out of his way.

Edward Penguin 10-11-2014 02:03 AM

Ian picked up the salamander and walked over to the flames as he listened to Zeke. He felt better that he wasn't the only one not doing the others. It was sort of fun to catch the salamanders. He watched as Zeke continued to talk some more. When Zeke mentioned muggleborn, Ian grinned. Good to know he wasn't the only one, but Zeke had been adopted. Hmmmm....

Ian went about answering Zeke's question as he jabbed his wand in the direction of another salamander that began scurrying from the flames. I'm muggle born as well. Ian snapped his fingers in frustration as he failed to capture the salamander. My mum stays at home, taking care of me and the house...well, me when I'm there. My dad is a fisherman who goes out in the North Sea to catch Cod. Fun stuff. Got to do a bit this summer. As far as I know, I'm the only magic user anywhere near where I live. Ian watched another salamander scurry by the benches, looking for a warm place.

Adi eyed Kevin. Did the young Lion want a lecture on respect? Because Adi could give him one. A nice looong one. Hehe. Making fun of himself? Maybe he was, maybe he wasn't. "I dunno about others, dude. But I always kid around. And to be honest, my spell work is okay. You just caught me at a bad time just now.'' LOL. His aim had been off. Way off.

Moar eyeing. "Common room, eh? Exactly what were you practicing on?'' Or was it 'whom'? Meh. Loser? "Why you...I wish I could put you in detention for that,'' Adi stated dryly. Or even dock a few points. He watched the boy take a swing at a salamander and sniggered a bit. So much for calling the Hufflepuff a loser. "Nice miss.''

So since he had Glacius down, why not move onto Glacius Duo? Forwards slash for that. The fourth year made a few practice slashes as he kept an eye out for salamanders fresh from the container.

Or why not go after Kevin's escaped one? Yeah! That would be fun. Now where was it? Oh! Was it that one straight up ahead? Adi raised his wand in its direction. "Glacius Duo!'' Forward slash! And a miss! The salamander scuttled away. "Glacius Duo! Glacius Duo!'' More forward slashes. His second attempt missed as well but the third one hit. "Oh yeah!'' Adi's fist pumped the air. "Got your salamander for you, Kevin.''

Watching him perform the glacius duo for a moment , Kevin turned his attention to finding another salamander and when he found one escaping another container in the corner, he turned around, aimed his wand , slashed his wand forward and shouted "Glacius!" the blue light flashed towards the creature as it walked unaware of its surroundings. He bit his lower lip aaand...HIT!

He turned back to Adi and grinned. "Let's make this a competition, i set my watch on a alarm that goes off in 5 minutes and the one who hit the most salamanders wins....no cheating!" Even Kevin didn't cheat.

Charms HW1-Post 1

Camera number 37 given out by Professor Fuller had been fastened around the neck of Cutty Mordaunt by a moke cord he'd stolen from his father when he was about 7. He entered the dueling space with it and surveyed the surroundings. A scavenger hunt of sorts for what could make for good photos with which to practice the charm they'd learn on. It sort of reminded him of that summer which he'd spent at the resort snapping photos of people in embarrassing and sometimes compromising positions. On one or two occasions it turned profitable, but it simply wasn't lucrative enough for Cutty to pursue it for another summer. Besides, he no longer had his mother's camera which he was using for this paparazzi-like game he played.

Cutty pushed down on the button to snap a practice photo of the ground to test the machine again. He reached toward the front and pulled the photo paper out to hold it before him. The tips of his shoes. Boring. He pocketed the image and saw Rehman & Hirase having a go at the salamanders.

The camera wound and clicked, capturing the beautiful light made my Rehman's magic. Glacius Duo. Glacius Duo. He missed the first opportunity to snap it, but upon Adi's subsequent try Cutty managed to capture the salamander as it froze on contact from Adi's hit. It's wiry body suspended there in the ice capsule. The camera spat out the image on the photo paper and Cutty took his wand to it. "Alacer." Tap. From the looks of it, the thing hardly had a chance of getting away from Rehman and his wandwork.

DADA HW 1 - Post 1

The second year made her way down to the room that she was expected to do her homework at. Here's to hoping that she would have better luck than she did during the lesson. Her wand was safely in the holster on her hip.

They were going to be practicing on salamanders today. Would that hurt the animal? AJ so wasn't down for animal cruelty. It was only a freezing charm, but AJ wouldn't appreciate being frozen repeatedly for practice.

AJ walked over and spotted her a salamander to practice on. "If this hurts you, you just let me now. Blink twice or something." Then AJ would stop and visit the defense professor.

Why not get a little practice in first? "Glacius, Glacius, Glacius." No sense in practicing the jab. If you couldn't do that then you might as well get the heck out of Hogwarts.

She was ready. Was the salamander? "Glacius." Jab. Nothing. Story of her life. "Glacius." More of nothing. Okay, so maybe the salamander didn't have anything to worry about after all. AJ was making a down right fool of herself. "Glacius." Something was happening....

The salamander was frozen. She did it, she actually did it. If only she could continue to have this kind of luck from here on out, this homework assignment wouldn't be that bad after all.

Wait...what? "What you mean with, find some of my ways entertaining? EVERYTHING what i do is entertaining. A lot better than being boring like a lot of people here" he glanced around the room for a moment before turning to the Prefect and he shrugged his shoulders. "Its okay to dislike me, i'm used to it" mweh.

Seeing the fist in front of him, Kevin raised his eyebrow. Was he serious? a fistbump? This reminded him of the time Bentley tried to high-five him. Not cool. But Adi was his age , not a grown woman so it wasn't so awkward so he bumped his fist against his and then set his watch.

"Alright, the watch is set for 3 minutes" should be long enough right? "Three...two..one!" he clicked the button and immediately turned around because he had seen a salamander crawling out of a container. He slashed his wand forward towards the creature while saying "Glacius Duo" and watched the light hit the salamander and freeze.

And would you lookit that! They had something in common. It was nice knowing he wasn't the only muggleborn, he didn't know of many others, it seemed being a pureblood or halfblood was the cool thing to be. That, or maybe he and Ian were just special. That'd be cool.

Zeke nodded along as he listened to Ian, following him around as he did so. "That's pretty cool, being the only one I mean," he said, though he wasn't sure he could say the same for the Cod fishing thing. Or, okay, MAYBE... only because there were hooks and nets and boats and the potential for giant squids to swallow you up, right? Heheh. "I don't hang out with muggles much anymore, know lots of wizarding peeps though, and lots of Ministry people." LOTS of them. It was cool on days where he was allowed to hang out in MLE and fetch Emily coffee whenever she needed it, those people were all sorts of cool and crazy.

But he supposed they were pretty much done here. "You ready to get going?" He could wait and walk him out too.

Luck was happening for her, and she was feeling good about it. Something about being in a good mood sure made the homework seem easier. Her salamander never blinked or seemed like it was hurt, so she figured practicing on the creatures wasn't so bad after all. He would thaw out eventually.

Now where was another target when you needed one? AJ was not about to wait for the first salamander to thaw out. She was not patient enough for that in the least. Here salamanders, salamanders, salamanders...

As if on cue, once came scuttling from behind a bin. Wicked. A moving target was even better. It was time to see if she still had it when it came to her aim. "Glacius." No frozen critter. Dang.

"Glacius." Jaaaaab. The salamander was getting away.... no! If he would just be still, AJ would be able to get her spell to work, maybe. "Glacius." This time the spell worked, and she made contact. Double success. Two frozen salamanders. One more to go.

Adi rolled his eyes. He'd tell Benny to keep an eye on this one when they were in their common room. Though he doubted Kevin would be freezing anyone.

He grinned now. "Whatever you say, Kevin. Though I agree with you on that last bit there.'' He would rather not be boring. And Kevin was used to being disliked? That didn't sound too...good. "Nah. You're too cool to dislike.''

Adi thought he would have been left hanging with the fist bump but he was pleased it was returned. Then they were all set to start. Wasting no time, he scanned the container area. A few salamanders lurked. "Glacius Tria!'' Sideways slash with a clockwise motion. The salamander was still unfrozen because Adi failed to make anything happen with his wand. "Glacius Tria! Glacius Tria!'' Eep! Nothing was happening. Meh.

Ian grinned at Zeke's response as he dropped the salamander back into the flames. It is cool and it isn't. I talked with Professor Morgan about being the only one in my town and how my folks tell me to keep it a secret. Other than that, it is sometimes cool being different. He listened as Zeke explained what it was like being around Ministry folks. That sounds like you get to see the important people who handle magic in our world. It sounds rather interesting.

Ian nodded. Yeah. I think we've caught the proper number of salamanders.

Salamanders were quick little things, huh? Maddie had stood off to the side and watched for quite some time, trying to get a feel for how the creatures moved and which direction they seemed to go when they did emerge from the container they were in. It was hard to draw any conclusive results but she had made some general assumptions that might help her during her task. And so she stepped away from the wall and towards the center of the room, wand at the ready. Time to get started.

"Glay-see-us...glay-see-us...glay-see-us," She muttered quietly, avoiding those around her as to not get in their way. "Glacius...glacius...glacius."

Now she just needed a salamander to freeze. Brown eyes focused on the container and she watched and waited, patiently and with focus. She'd be ready to aim as soon as the opportunity presented itself.

DADA Homework 1 - Post #1

Sophie didn't want to use Glacius or any of its variants, not after what happened in potions, but she was going to practice it anyway and do her homework because she wasn't going to let anyone know how freaked out over the spell she was. She hated the thought of using it on the salamanders, though, as... she knew firsthand how not fun it was to be frozen. The pooooor, poor salamanders.

Soph stood off to the side of the room by the door, out of the way of everyone else and watching the way other students handled the creatures as she waited to see if CB would show up. She'd invited her to come along and do their homework together, as Sophie really didn't want to do it alone, but she wasn't sure if she was going to be battling alone today or not. SHE WOULD WAIT AND SEE.

For now, the fourth year gripped her wand securely in her hand, cycling through the wand movements of each of the three spells and making sure she kept each one straight. Point for Glacius, forward slash for Glacius Duo, side slash for Glacius Tria... right? Wasn't she right? She may have fished out her parchment of notes from her pocket just to be sure, and then continued practicing the wand movement accordingly, an expression of the utmost concentration on her face.

And this was the moment, yeah? Maddie watched with mild interest as the small body of a salamander emerged from the container and crawled down the side and on to the floor, its body movements slow and fluid. And she crept forward, quietly and with her wand pointed towards the creature. She wanted to be sure her aim was true before saying the spell, else she'd miss the salamander entirely.

*JAB* "Glacius."

She squinted as her spell hit but had no lasting impact, feeling something akin to disappointment. She knew hitting a moving target would be harder but still, she'd wanted to get it the first time.

The second year continued after the creature, careful to avoid those around her as she kept on the trail. And then the salamander went to cross in front of her and she aimed again.

*JAB* "Glacius." Bingo. Frozen and unmoving, the salamander rested in front of her feet. Maddie crouched down, observing it carefully. They were meant to return them to the container now, yeah?

DADA homework was the easiest, Lex had always thought so and not because the spells were easy either but because it was one of her favourite subjects so the homework wasn't that much of a chore. Were it any other kind of homework she might have stayed wrapped up in bed and prolonged her snuggle time with her kneazle. No doubt he'd have liked that. Getting up this early should be considered a sin.

With a small yawn, Alexa entered the dueling arena. It was still kinda early, maybe an hour before breakfast but that was the point. She didn't want to be practising with others in the room. That was a recipe for someone misfiring then her 'accidentally' retaliating because she 'didn't know better'. Too many witnesses would be there for that excuse to fly so she'd content herself with the early hours and the empty arena.

Drawing Professor Airey's wand, she walked over to the fireplace. It took her a moment to notice the salamander scampering away from the fire like it had business somewhere else.

This was the homework yeah? Wasting no time, she took aim and gave a firm jab. "Glacius!" For the faintest moment, the wand seemed like it might have malfunctioned or rejected her command but light shot from the wand and in the next second, the thing was frozen in place. Perfect time to gloat to herself but then she saw another and another crawl from the fireplace. A glance around revealed that there were even more than she thought! This was gonna be a busy morning.

Two salamanders have been successfully frozen, and victory was almost hers. Being able to do spells correctly sure did a number on your confidence. AJ watched as the different salamanders scuttled about. Which one was going to be her new target?

There was one in particular that seemed to be on a mission. He was moving SO fast. Oh, AJ could smell a challenge, and immediately went for that one. "Glacius." She missed, drats. "Glacius." The salamander was able to get out of way just in time. "Glacius." Still nothing. GRR!

AJ jogged over closer to the creature. He was not going to get away this easily. The salamander had officially made this a game. "Glacius." More nothing. Dang, he aim wasn't all that bad so maybe her intent was off? That was more of a possibility. "Glacius." The second year still hadn't made contact. She wasn't going to give up that easily, salamander.

Would it be considered cheating if she whipped out something like Glacius Tria and like....froze the fireplace itself? With it frozen...they wouldn't be able to escape so fast and she'd finally get a handle on the situation. This sounded like a game plan, a right proper game plan too that she was wasting a lot of time thinking about while the little salamanders ran about, some even scampering at her feet. Merlin's beard this had to stop.

The Gryffindor hopped from one foot to the next, trying to keep them from scaling her legs in search of hiding. Not a hideout post here, and she didn't want to be taken for one any time soon.

Circe, this was going to make aiming just a little harder wasn't it? Sigh. The sacrifices she would have to make. Lex slowed her hopping some and focused all her attention on the fireplace with its escapees that didn't much care they were making her life difficult. Should have brought Felix, he'd have taken care of half of them for her and the Professor would never need to know.

Horizontal slash. "Glacius Tria!" This time she was sure Airey's wand was rebelling against her. It only froze bits of the fire which then thawed creating...er...steam? She didn't even KNOW but the fire as still crackling and the salamanders were still getting away. Ugh. She didn't have time for this and needed to find her wand. There was another side slash, followed by, "Glacius Tria!" With a little more intent than the spell just before because apparently this wand needed convincing.

This time, the fire did freeze solid (don't ask how that worked, she wasn't sure what she was looking at and didn't make a habit of questioning magic) and the salamanders had stopped. NOW she could get down to business.

After the first salamander was handled. Maddison had to wait a bit for some action. She stood close to the container, face illuminated by the soft glow it gave off. And she watched intently, waiting for one of the small creatures to show itself. She had her wand at the ready, wanting to see how quickly she could freeze it. This was a test of her own ability.

And then it happened, movement she noticed out of the corner of her eye. She waited for the salamander to hit the floor and then she jabbed her wand in its direction, intent and voice clear as she spoke. "Glacius!" And it froze! IT FROZE. It had happened so quickly and Maddie was PLEASED with herself but she didn't dare show it. It was important to act like she'd done it that well a MILLION times before, yes? And so she simply smiled faintly, even though inside she was fist pumping. This felt good.

Sophie went over the spells and wand movements in her head for awhile longer before feeling like perhaps CB wasn't going to come. It was okay that she didn't. Soph would be fine. She DID kind of want an ally to be her witness in case someone froze her solid again, as this was the perfect opportunity for someone to go after her again, buuuut... she would be fine, right? Romanos would probably be better at handling a situation like that than Culloden had been.

At least, she could get started till CB got there. Totally going to keep hoping her dormmate would show up.

Soph stayed by the wall for awhile, calculating the movements of the salamanders and planning the moment she'd strike. Then, as one salamander went scurrying her way from the container, Soph didn't even need to think - she pointed her wand right at the salamander and cast, "Glacius!" BUT SHE MISSED. "GLACIUS!" she tried again, her wand following the little bugger's path as he scampered along - he was quick, wasn't he? - but luckily, this time she was quick enough, and the salamander was frozen.

Hehehehehe. That was fun. She'd try Glacius Duo next time.

Soph hurried over to scoop the creature up before another salamander ran her way and deposited it in the fire, then RAN back over to her spot by the wall to plan her next attack.

This activity wasn't so bad, was it?

Cutty was looking down at his camera and snapping another random shot when he noticed Hirase and Rehman about to enter into a competition. Did either of them know how to lose at things? He'd keep his camera handy. Just in case.

Prepared opportunist had something stuffed away in his robes so long as he was on his way to the Dueling Arena, he'd made a stop to the kitchen. But first things being first, he reached his hand out toward the photo paper and gave the photo a developing flutter. He watched as the randomly captured image came into being and Sophie Brown's hair swept across as she took aim at one of the salamanders.

"Glacius!" He made the jabbing motion with his wand to try and get one of the creatures to freeze. And it did, but figuratively and just before the spell hit the floor in front of it's feet. You know, he really liked this spell.

As Soph leaned against the wall once more, she reflected on the variation of the spell that was the next most powerful - Glacius Duo. That was the forward slash, and Tria was the side slash, yeah? She had that solidified in her head as fact now and... figured she'd best give them a go next.

...Or she was going to, until she spotted Cutty. Her arch-enemy.

Soph narrowed her eyes at him, even though he wasn't even looking at her at the moment, and she grunted a little in displeasure. After her conversation with Culloden, she had FULLY convinced herself that Cutty was the one who had cast THIS VERY SPELL at her and froze her solid in potions class. She just KNEW it in her heart, and Soph was not going to turn her back so he could do it again. Nope. She was going to keep him in her sights at ALL times today and wasn't going to give him the opportunity to "miss" and get her again. So she was going to wait until after he successfully froze one of the salamanders before she did hers.

...But he missed, and Soph SQUINTED at him. What was he playing at? Of COURSE he could perform this spell with great accuracy - even in the midst of chaos in potions class, he'd done it so well, hadn't he? Was he feigning innocence? Trying to protect his bum because he knew she was watching her?

Sneaky little spawn of the devil.

Fueled by her anger, Soph grunted again and waited for another salamander to come her way, keeping an eye on Cutty in the meantime - when it did, she whipped her wand in a quick forward slash and cast right at it with a determined, fiery attitude, "Glacius Duo!"

...And the salamander froze. Right on the first try. Take THAT, Mordaunt.

They were staring at one another. Eye to eye. Beast to beast. The salamander and Cutty. Cutty held cold and Slytherin ice prince toward the salamander who seemed to take on a haughty stance on this whole kids throwing spells at him thing.

That was when Cutty reached into his pocket and pulled out a ripe pepper and extended it in offer to the salamander, whose disposition changed almost immediately upon the presence of food. Animals. This was how they worked. As the creature grew near enough to eat the pepper it turned it's large head and took a side bite. Cutty swore it was glowing brighter as it nommed away and began to attract other salamanders. Dark, dark, evil Snow White. Surrounded by black-eyed fire creatures and feeding them from the hand.

He stole a glance over Sophie's way and spoke to her for the first time since Bellaire's Irie Room Do. "Hey, Brown? D'yer remember the wand motion for Glacius Tria?"

Sophie had SHOWED CUTTY UP, she knew she had, and she kept a keen eye on him as she moved to drop the frozen salamander back in its container of fire. She made it back to her wall in one piece without getting frozen and she attributed that to her STARING at Cutty the whole time she moved.

Not even subtle at all.

But then... he was addressing her? And what he SAID made her grunt again. "You're asking my help? Thought after that potions class, you'd be a finely-tuned grand master at these spells."

Yeah, she went there. Accusatory tone and all.

She would show him, though, because she wanted to show off and aimed at the nearest salamander as it scampered by, waving her wand in a quick side-slashing motion, "Glacius Tria!" The darn thing got away from her, though, and Soph's eyes narrowed. Ruuuuuuuuude of it. Didn't it know she had something to prove here? She abandoned her spot on the wall to move closer to the thing as it continued to crawl around with surprising speed and aimed again, slashing her wand to the side once more, "Glacius Tria! GLACIUS TRIA!" HA. Got it that time.

...And she looked to Cutty, her expression stoic. "...Buggers are fast."

He slashed his wand sideways with a clockwise motion and shouted "Glacius Tria!" Light flew towards the creature but before it hit it vanished in to thin air. Huh? Scratching the back of his head, the Gryffindor tried again but it was with the same result. He saw that Adi had trouble with the last spell as well. "Seems like we have to stick with Duo for now..."

He couldn't let the Prefect win the game though, so he left him for a moment after he saw a Salamander in the corner and pointed his wand at it. "Glacius!" the spell hit without effort. How much time was left anyways? He checked his wand and gasped silently.

Making that up? Noooo. "I am not,'' Adi reassured the younger Gryffindor. Poor Kevin probably was used to hearing negative comments that it was understandable why he thought Adi was making stuff up.

Looked like Tria was a difficult spell for most if not all students. "Glacius Tria!'' Adi made the appropriate wand movement but still...NOTHING. :x3: Intent. He needed more intent.

FOCUS, Adi! "Glacius Tria!" Cue the wand movement. Light shot form his wand, towards the targeted salamander annnnnnd IT FROZE! Eeep! It was the first time he had gotten that particular spell to work and the boy was ecstatic.

Dumbo? WHY was Kevin still calling him a dumbo? Ugh! No time to dwell on that now though. "Glacius Tria!'' Nothing. "Glacius Tria!'' Another frozen Salamander in a flash of light. He quickly found another target. "Glacius Tria!'' Frozen Salamander! Woot!

He was going to win this. Oh yeah!

Two salamanders down, a few more to go. At least she figured that a few more would adequately prove that she could handle the spell. As for its variations, Maddie wasn't ready just yet to test those out in front of an audience. She would practice THOSE in private and then present them when ready.

Waiting by the container, the second year was slightly distracted by the others in the room. The slytherin boy and her fellow ravenclaw were having what SEEMED like a friendly-enough exchange but Maddie knew better and was intrigued. She wanted to know who would break the friendly facade first but she couldn't watch until she'd completed her own task. So averting her eyes, she focused on the salamanders once more.

After a few minutes, the brunette spotted movement and took a few quiet steps back so the salamander could move onto the floor in front of her. She then aimed her wand and took a minute to watch the creature with mild interest. When she felt the time was right, she jabbed her wand and said clearly, "Glacius!"

The salamander was frozen, much like the castle last term. The second year bent down to poke gently at its form and wondered what it was feeling, if anything.

Ugg he felt like he was behind.

Ben had thought he had had a bit more time to complete the defense homework, but when he had double checked both the current date and the due date it seemed so little. So when he found some free time, he headed with his wand and notes to the dueling area so he could get his practice in. Fire salamanders and the freezing charm. It was bound to be a bit more complicated than using the charm on the stationary objects they had done in class.

Stepping inside the room, he noticed Professor Romanos was standing near a box he supposed was where his targets were. The fourth year also saw that Angel had the same idea about doing the work yet she seemed a bit lost. Forgot what they were supposed to do?

"Freeze the salamanders." he answered her as he approached his girlfriend. Maybe they should work together to see what they could do. "Using any of the three spells we learned in class." Benny personally was going to work with the easier ones of the three since he still had to work duo out. Tria might be a little too complicated for what they were doing.

"Glacius!" he cast after he focused to try it out the way he remembered, the result, a frozen spot on the floor like expected. So far so good. Now they just had to keep an eye out for any salamanders.

DADA HW 2 - No idea Angel liked animals this much

Angel smiled as she heard her boyfriend come into the room. "Hi Ben." Angel listened to what her BF had to say and was going along until.

O_______________o

"WHAT HAVE THE SALAMANDERS EVER DONE TO YOU?" Angel was in hysterics now. "WHY DO THEY DESERVE TO BE FROZEN?" Angel didn't know she felt this strongly about animals being frozen. "WOULD YOU LIKE IT IF I FREEZED YOU!!" Angel just stared at her BF surely Ben was an animal lover or did he just like dragons and cool animals and forget the little guys, they could fight their own battles, was that it?

Angel looked at her wand and then decided to practice on the floor like Ben did. "Glacius!" Angel smiled as she concentrated so hard. She just stared at the floor when a little spot formed next to Benny's now where to practice... did she really have to freeze the poor creatures?

At least Angel was to see him...until she registered what he had said about what they were doing. Ben winced as she yelled about freezing them and him and harming the salamanders by their spellwork, the older lion letting her rant before he even tried to get a word in in defense of the activity. "Relax Angel...would I do it if it harmed the salamanders?" Surely she knew he was a creature lover who took care of them instead of endangering them.

"It doesn't fully freeze them...just cools them and keeps them from moving so you can handle them," he tried to assure her. At least that was what he figured they did as much. Romanos wasn't having them kill them and they were supposed to add them back to the fire once they were frozen so they could return to their former selves. Benny watches as she practiced on the floor, breaking off his gaze when he noticed movement finally come from the box.

"Glacius!" he cast at the creature, the spell only half working as the salamander moved slowing it down slightly. "Glacius!" the Gryffindor cast again with a bit more force and determination making it work.

"Its kinda how ashwinder eggs are frozen before they're used in potions," he mused as he tentatively moved closer to retrieve his quarry. Ben freezing in place halfway there when he registered how he himself had used a potions reference. Geez...he was still crazy and off, he mused to himself as he carefully picked the creature up to return to the fire.

Kace wanted to try and practice the Glacius Tria spell before he left. He wanted to try this on his own. He remembered what the professor said before he left the class, "You may notice a slight tvist in your vrist... But keep it simple and precise. You'll vont to haff the tip of your vand aiming precisely at vot you vont to cast at by the time you finish the incantation. Being off a beat or so von't do much harm, though you'll be surprised at how far off a spell can go from it's target if cast an inch too far to the right." He nodded and then tried to do the wand movement. It was slash and a clockwise movement. He got that down. He said the spell, "Glacius Tria!" and then he got that down from class. Time to put it to the test.

He faced the Salamander and aimed his wand and said, "Glacius Tria!" and did his slash with a clockwise movement and kept his wrist simple and precise and he aimed it precisely at the creature. He noticed the freezing charm working and it froze the salamander. Well would you look at that! He smiled and he was glad his work. His Professor's advice worked!

Puck just couldn’t she didn’t want to fail at this. That was what her thing was she didn’t want to fail, she wanted him to be proud – but he couldn’t be proud that was impossible for him wasn’t it? Still, she was doing this for herself.

She tried to think about the charms needed and chewed on the edge of her lip as she tried to remember the spell and wand work. Point for Glacius, forward slash for Glacius Duo, side slash for Glacius Tria, right? She bit down on her lip as she jabbed her wand forward then moved and did a side slash and a forward slash. Heck it looked like she was having a sword fight using her wand.

So....

She was a little late and a tiny bit sick. BUT SHE WAS HERE, SOPHIE BROWN. 'Cause she said she would be. And she didn't back down on her words after she gave them. No way.

The brunette inched into the room, still a little nauseous but she was fine, okay? Fine. Yep. And no one needed the gross details. Probably a little paler than normal, she spotted Soph and did her best to bound over toward her as normal as possible. She wasn't sick. No. And she was going to get her homework done if she kept saying that and convinced her brain that it was true.

"Heya, Soph."

Was that Cutty Mordaunt?

So she had to do this. Puck thought as she faced the salamander and watched it move slightly. She breathed in and out and tried to calm her nerves and clear her mind as she prepared to cast the spell. Really, she wanted to be good at this but doing that for him, for someone who couldn’t even care if she did a perfect pirouette as a child or even if she did any other positive thing in her life.

She was pushing that negative thought away as she sat there, trying to calm herself. “Lets do this Sally” she smirked at the little salamander as she raised her wand and pointed it at the salamander. “Glacius” she cast pointed her wand at the little salamander and watched as it was suddenly icy.

"It worked!" She cheered happily and grinned to herself.

Okay, so maaaaybe she should have come here for the practical portion of the homework sooner, but no matter because Lux was here now and ready to freeze some salamanders.

The warmth was an added bonus, because it was nice and TOASTY in the arena. Aaaaah. Smiling to herself, Lux saw Puck and sent her friend a friendly wave. Usually she would walk over and chat, but the older girl seemed quite busy practicing the wand movements. A snort DID escape, as it seemed like Puck was having a sword fight with an invisible person.

Taking her own wand out, Lux jabbed it at the air a few times for the sake of it before spotting a salamander scampering its way across the floor. "GLACIUS!" She spell struck an inch from the small creature. "Rats."

Angel just stared at her boyfriend... yeah that was right she was still not sure about all this but at least she had calmed down a bit from just a few minutes ago. "If your lying to me, I'll... I'll freeze you Benjamin to see how you like it." Angel had used her boyfriends full name to show she meant business.

Angel then watched as Benny did the spell and she looked around as she saw movement coming towards her, okay now to do the spell or not she wanted to practice. "If this hurts them, I'll be doing a protest tomorrow." Angel said truthfully before she pointed her wand at the creature. "Sorry Professor's orders." Angel sighed as she concentrated on the spell. "Glacius Duo." Angel did the wand movement and was happy when the spell worked... she went over to the salamander and put it back where she had been told to by Benny.

She hoped that the salamander would unfreeze maybe she should watch and make sure.

Dropping the salamander back inside the box, Ben couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. His WHOLE name? Now that was a new one and he inwardly shivered at the thought of being frozen himself. Not that he had to risk it since he wasn't lying or thought Angel could actually do it. No spell could totally freeze a human...right? Or at least she cared too much for him to punish if he didn't know the whole truth.

He didn't doubt she'd protest though, given she was very clear about speaking her mind. Both sisters were but Angel had that certain crazy edge to it. The older lion weakly smiled as she apologized to her target, the boy moving away from the fire-proof box to add some distance. Guarding it wasn't fair to the salamanders' chances. Give them a little space and then try his luck. Which was why he had nearly returned to his starting point before turning back around.

Was that? Nope, not a creature. And Angel was returning her own to the box. But then there was another one trying to sneak past him. Oh no it didn't. "GLACIUS!" he cast with surprising conviction, the spell working on the first try for once catch Benny of guard. Maybe it was time to move on to the harder spell finally, he mused to himself as he picked up his second salamander.

Angel was totally angry about the whole situation and she hoped her Boyfriend wasn't lying to her... though since she loved Ben she wouldn't hurt him. "I'm sorry Ben." Angel was calming down now since she loved him so much. "They seem to be doing okay."

Angel looked at her boyfriend and moved back to where she had started... she had got there when she saw something coming towards her, there was a sneaky Salamander coming towards her. ""GLACIUS!" Angel did the wand movement and smiled as the spell worked. She then went and picked it up and put it back into the box. "Okay so they seem to be fine Ben." Angel said truthfully.

So, the sneaky little salamander had managed to escape her latest ambush, but that wasn't going to throw AJ off. Nope, she was determined, and that meant that she wouldn't be stopping until she had her desired results.

She was still chasing after the salamander that she wanted. At this point just any ol' one wouldn't do. Gaining momentum, she had a clear shot. "Glacius." Missed. Dangit. Her aim was usually on point. What was going on?

"Glacius," she cried when another opportunity presented itself. And yet she still wasn't getting results. Maybe it was her intent that was off? Adi was always reminding her of that little bit when he helped her out.

Another clear shot. "Glacius." The salamander froze on the spot. Success. AJ reached down and picked the frozen guy up. "Told you I would have my way." She gently put him back with the other salamanders so he could go back to his normal self.

Even with the fire...er...done away with for a lack of better description, she wouldn't let her guard down. All about her, little salamanders were scampering around. She knew she didn't have to freeze them all but a decent amount would leave her feeling satisfied. Lots to catch up on given her lack of memory where this class was concerned.

Aside from the fire, she didn't see much need to stray from the average glacius because they were just salamanders and they didn't really require much else.

Out of pure reflex, she hopped out of the way as another scampered her way before remembering she was actually meant to be freezing these things. Merlin they were quick too. Lex spotted two that had bumped into each other in their haste, watching as they struggled to right themselves but she didn't wait too long before giving a jab in their direction.

"Glacius!"

Direct hit! They froze over in no time at all, one even freezing on its back but that wasn't her problem, it'd thaw and be back in the fire in no time.

Benny waved off the apology sent his way. "Its okay," he assure her. He wasn't put off by her words and threat, if anything it proved she cared strongly for the well-being of creatures both magical and mundane. Something they both shared. And they did seem to be perfectly fine so all was good, especially since she was calming down and giving into the assignment. The sooner it was done by all the students, including them, the sooner the salamanders could get on with their lives.

While Angel went for her next salamander, the older lion tried to focus on the second of the three spells. "Glacius Duo...Glacius Duo...Glacius Duo...Glacius Duo" he practiced over and over again without a wand movement to get the incantation and visualization down first. So when the next creature tried to escape past them he was ready.

"Glacius Duo!!" he cast with the different wand movement. But it didn't work so he tried again. "Glacius Duo!" This time was of partial effect and the salamander moved away from where he had hit.

"Try and concentrate." Angel smiled as she looked at Ben. "GLACIUS DUO!!" Angel did the wand movement and concentrated on her target the salamander that was coming her way and she smiled when the spell hit, she then went and put him back and went back to Ben. "Did you get that?" Angel asked him. "All you have to do is concentrate really hard on the spell and the object you are aiming at.

As she made her way into the room she seen Lux and Puck. She gave them approving smiles as she walked into the area. "Hey, Lux, Puck." She was glad to see that she wasn't the only one to get a late start on this assignme Phew! It was nice to and toasty in here. Nice though.

There were fire salamanders popping up everywhere. She had her wand already and was alert and ready. "Glacius!" She pointed her wand at the approaching Salamander. It fell short of hitting the salamander. Well she was going to try this again.

She pointed her wand at the same salamander that she barely missed. "Glacius!" Yes, she got it. It frozen over but she knew that it would be back to its firey ways, and soon.

“Thanks you as well” she grinned as she turned her attention to the moving Salamanders. “Glacius Tria” she said as she slashed her wand in the clockwise movement shown in class. Awww, Puck was so sweet. She was also really good at freezing salamanders, because she got another one right away. "Awesome job!" she said as she applauded her friend. If only she could catch a salamander on the first try. Glacius was the easiest spell to cast since it consisted of pointing; she didn't even want to imagine how she'd do with the other two spells.

Spotting another salamander, she sent a forward slash towards it with her wand. "Glacius Duo!" Another miss that ended up hitting the wall by mistake. "Oops!"

Giggling, she heard Cinna's voice. "Hey!" She sent her best friend a wave before applauding again as she managed to freeze her first salamander. "Way to go! We are on fire!" She gave a snort because the salamanders were on fire themselves and she was so very funny.

Now that was a switch, Angel helping him out with a spell. It tended to be he and Adi helping out the younger lions aka their other halves. Not that Benny minded the switch, for he was well aware that DADA wasn't his strong suit. And it kept her distracted from being upset about the care of the salamanders.

He simply nodded as she told him to concentrate, taking a stance so he was ready. Then he watched her demonstrate on her own catch, the spell working for her. "Yeah...I did," he assured her. As the fourth year tried to emulate her movements in practice, Ben realized where he went wrong and tightened it up. There...should work better next time. Now he just had to wait.

Concentrate...and wand movement....concentrate and wand movement.

"Glacius duo!" he cast when the next salamander made his appearance. The boy following through the entire spell. It was a little off shot as the creature moved but it had worked. Just had to give way for movement. "Glacius duo!" Benny tried again and this time he froze his third salamander.

"Woot...that's it I believe," he said as he went to retrieve it, returning the salamander to his warm home.

Adi supposed with that last go at the Salamanders, the thirty seconds were up. ''Who won?'' he asked Kevin as he went about rounding up all the salamanders he had frozen- Five in total. Two before his and Kevin's little competition and three afterwards.

"I froze three in total,'' he told Kevin as he replaced the salamander in their container. Had the younger Lion frozen more? Adi wouldn't be surprised if he did. Anyway. He was pleased with being able to cast the Tria variation. Duo as well since there hadn't been much progress with that in class on his part.

Jasmine entered the Dueling Arena, ready to get her homework done. Once she got inside, she set down her bag and took out her wand. Hopefully she would get a chance to practice all three of the Glacius spells. Seeing the salamanders scurrying around the room, Jasmine knew it was showtime. Anxious to get started, she spotted one particular salamander that she wanted to target.

Pointing her wand in its direction, she shouted, "Glacius". Missed. Jasmine guessed that the little critter was faster than she had expected. So, he was going to be a challenge. Well Jasmine did not give up that easily. She stalked the salamander once more and when she thought the time was right, she raised her wand. Jasmine pointed her wand at the salamander and said, "Glacius". This time she made a direct hit and the animal froze in its tracks. One down, two to go. Jasmine went over to the salamander and returned him to the fire.

Practicing a newish spell on an honest to goodness creature that could set you on fire seemed like a super fun thing to do... until you had to do it and remembered you were 12 and that your partner for the task was already prone to firestarting. Dot had seriously considered wearing something fireproof to this effort, but instead...

Well. She'd just shown up and tried to think positive thoughts. Now she was waiting on her partner, as well as keeping an eye on the fire. Next salamander to escape was ALL HERS. Ahem. No sharing.

Jasmine had frozen one salamander and was on the lookout for number two. She had her eye on her next victim, but she had learned her lesson from her first unsuccessful attempt. Deciding to sneak up on this salamander, Jasmine tried not to be obvious. She'd have to be sneaky and quick this time. Better to catch him when he least expected it.

Jasmine was going to try Glacius Duo this time. That spell had given her a bit of trouble in class so the more practice the better. She made sure that she was concentrating as hard as she could before she began. Tiptoeing up behind the salamander, Jasmine raised her wand and made a forward slash. "Glacius Duo", she said, carefully pronouncing the incantation. Fortunately, this time she got it right and the little salamander was quite frozen. Jasmine made sure to return the little guy to the fire so he could thaw and return to his normal self.

Keeping her eyes out for salamanders, Lux started making forward slashes with her wand in a way that other people would probably think resembled muggle sword fighting. She wanted to be prepared for her next target when it showed up.

Two scampered across the floor, and she sent the Glacius Duo spell towards the one closest to her. At first she thought it was a miss, but the tiny creature was frozen. Excited, Lux bounced up and down on the balls of her feet; she only had to practice with Glacius Tria now. Though maybe practicing all three spells some more wouldn't hurt.

Cinna laughed when Lux made the we're on fire joke she totally got it call in the bestie connection or whatever you wanted to call it. She did watch Lux as she did a Glacius Duo charm on a salamander and watched as he hit the wall. Oppss.

The gryffindor was glad that she had done that and she got to see the wand movement. That was always the hardesst part of doing charms and spells the wand movements. So Glacius Duo was a forward stash.

She waiting around for a salamander. Once she found one she took her wand and made a forward slash. "Glacius Duo!" Did she hit the salamander? It looked froze to her.

To be honest, Dima was nervous. He and flames were never a good pairing, and the last thing he wanted to do was set his best friend on fire (which was probably possible, despite the charm's nature). It would be best for him to stay as far away from those salamanders as possible, but working with 'em looked SO fun. And he wasn't one to skip out on homework.

As with every other piece of homework, Grayson had procrastinated with this one as well. Homework took a lot of motivation, which was something that the boy hardly had a lot of in the first place. So, yawning, the fifth year finally made his way up to the first floor and towards the Duelling Are--

Oh SWEET! It was NICE in here. Nice and toasty. Man, why hadn't somebody told him before? He would have been more than happy to start his homework sooner if it meant that he could get away from the chilly weather by being in here. Was there a cosy fireplace in here? It felt like it. And he kinda wanted to sit near it with a mug of hot chocolate while he was at it.

Now.............. what was it that he had to come in here to do a--

WAS THAT A SALAMANDER?

Grayson fumbled a little to take out his wand as quickly as possible before pointing it in the direction of the fleeing salamander. "Glacius! Glacius! GLACIUS!" Each of the spells flew out towards the creature and......

......... missed. Narrowly. That was annoying.

"Glacius!" She cast reflexively as another salamander darted by her. You knew something was wrong--or right--when you started casting without giving it much thought. Clearly she had too much of this. It wouldn't be much longer before she called it a morning and went to have some breakfast with the others. That was where she'd find out about all the homework they had due for today...which she hoped wouldn't be much because haha she wasn't prepared to spend her day scrambling around to get things done.

Just behind her, she could hear the scurrying of other little feet and turned with her wand already brandished.

"Glacius!" And another. "Glacius!" It was almost like rapid succession only she probably wouldn't have caught that many because of the way they were moving. She was lucky enough to hit two and of course they were with separate spells.

Perhaps next time she'd attempt a more powerful spell to get more of them at once because she was getting nowhere with 'glacius' alone.

Next time. He was gonna get it next time.

Did he care that he currently looked like some sort of mad man with his wide eyes that were peeled out for a salamander? Not at all. Not even a bit. Those buggers could be FAST, if the last one was anything to go by. Or he was simply too slow and wasn't ready in the first place and they jumped out at him randomly. Surprise attack. It was a good form of atta--

SALAMANDER!

This was it. He was READY for this. A little faster than last time -- probably because he already had his wand in his hands and knew exactly what to expect now -- Grayson aimed his wand at the creature as precisely as he could and cried, "GLACIUS!" Intent was key. Lots of intent and focus and confidence.

There was nothing quite like the sweet satisfaction of watching the magical creature freeze over. HA! MUCH better than last time. Did he deserve a pat on the back? Yes, he did.

How many more of these buggers did he have to freeze?

Zander didn't really want to practice this homework and it wasn't because he hated all homework, which okay was sort of true. But he couldn't really get the spell down in class so spending time trying to freeze three salamanders did NOT sound like a fun time. Especially not today because he was still feeling really exhausted after all of these early lessons lately.... What was the meaning of all this anyways? How come Professors couldn't just teach at normal hours!? Was there something in their water or something?

But right. Anyways, despite how long it had taken him to force himself over to the Dueling Arena, he was here. And was gonna freeze some salamanders ready or not.

And before he knew it-- SALAMANDER AT 12OCLOCK!!!

The Gryffindor pulled out his wand and chased after it 'cause MERLIN that creature was fast. "Glacius!!...... Glacius!!!...... Glacius!!!" And instead of freezing the salamander he accidentally freezed a couple of places on the ground. Ahem. Oops. But why the heck was that salamander so fast?

WAIT O______O Another one? "Glacius!" GAH. Another miss. This time, the Gryffindor pointed straight at it, ran right up behind it, stopped then concentrating real hard he tried another time. "Glacius!!!" FINALLY.

This determination thing was clearly working. And freezing one salamander had given him a new bought of confidence. So much so, that he was currently poised there with his chest puffed out a little and a mean glare in his eyes. THERE! "Glacius Duo!" Why was he using this variant? No idea. Did it work? WELL. It LOOKED like it had when the salamander seemed to stop in it's tracks and he thought he could see some ice forming over the creature but then it started scurrying away again. Great. "Glacius Duo! Glaci-- GLACIUS!"

And another frozen salamander to go.

Sweet Merlin, he needed to stop shouting that freaking spell.

"We're going to be amazing. SALAMANDER!" Dot spotted the one Dima had noticed first, which had slipped out of the fire when she was bumping him. With an excited eep, Dot pounced in the direction of the skittering creature. "I'll get this one. Glacius!"

Most embarrassing of embarrassing things. The spell slowed the reptile down, but only for a second. "I'm not super good at it. I lied."

He almost fell over when Dot bumped him- probably not the smartest thing to do in a dueling arena full of fiery salamanders, but Dima still giggled. "Then you can cast for both of us."

Except... would she not? The second year must have jumped a million feet into the air when Dot screamed of the creature he had already spotted, slinking back so she could take charge of the situation. That was always how they did things, right? Dot dove straight into stuff and dragged him along for the ride, and it was best that way.

Maybe not this time, though. As the sluggish little guy tried to get his bearings after the redhead performed her spell, he extended the tip of his wand from his robe sleeve. It... it was just a point, right? And a quiet, "Glacius." The wand movement and the incantation were easy; it was the intent Dima had lacked prior to this attempt, but he really did want to do it properly this time around. And seemingly, it had worked, because the salamander had frozen over.

"Nah," Dima told her, carefully pulling his wand hand back inside his sleeve. "I think your spell was just working slow, see? Best witch I know."

Honest to goodness, she was.

Watching Cinna freeze another salamander, Lux sent her best friend a thumbs up. They were both doing an amazing job with the spells.

Humming to herself, she made counter-clockwise slashes with her wand. This would probably be the hardest one for her to cast, but Lux was a determined girl who would not let some little salamanders get past her. Wasn't like the freezing HURT them. Professor Romanos wouldn't let them hurt innocent creatures; she was way too nice for that.

Sending a sideways slash towards one of said salamanders, she called out, "Glacius Tria!" To her shock the spell actually made contact. Now she could practice some more with the other spells if she wanted to. How many chances would she get to work with the salamanders? Best to do it now. Pointing her wand at another salamander, she used Glacius to freeze it.

Maybe after another successful go with Glacius Duo and Glacius Tria and she would head off to get something to eat.

Eden was a bit nervous to face the salamanders. Since when did she have very strong reflexes? Never. She was very likely to get burned..a LOT. So she had her wand in one hand, and her backpack in the other as she stepped into the Arena.

A few other students were here--so if she got SERIOUSLY injured, she wouldn't be EATEN by a salamander. Though...she was fairly certain they didn't just eat people or anything. Hmm. She dropped her bag in the indicated spot and stepped out...looking around for a salamander....

SHOOT.

She should have gone over the spell beforehand--what was it again--and before she could THINK it through a salamander was upon her, and she did what came first---she ran the other way, until she couldn't run--a wall was blocking her--and she felt VERY scared. GAH SOMEONE HAAAAAALP. "AQUAMENTI!" she shouted quickly, without thinking---and water splayed the salamander in front of her. He didn't seem very hurt by it---in fact, he just seemed PEEVED more so, now what?! RIGHT. She needed to do the ACTUAL spell they had to learn--glacius--but--she was having a total brain meltdown right now.

But the salamander stepped closer, and Eden was FREAAAKING out--"Glacius!" she suddenly cried, thinking straight again, and she saw the spell shoot from her wand right to the creature--and it FROZE.

Oh thank Merlin. Eden panted heavily. She felt petrified. Wow. Okay. Eden was still very bad at reflexes. But at least she had done it...right?

Thinking about eating wasn't the best idea, because suddenly all Lux could think about was food. She hadn't eaten since lunch, and her stomach growled when she realized how hungry she was.

NO. She must not let the thought of food distract her when there were two other salamanders that needed to be frozen. Instead of focusing on the thought of Chocolate Frogs, she practiced more forward slashes with her wand. She was becoming such a pro with these spells with all the practice.

"Glacius Duo!" she called out as she hit a wandering salamander with one of the forward slashes. Now she had five frozen salamanders and only needed one more. Soon she would be back in her dorm and eating loads of Chocolate Frogs; she would need to buy more at Honeydukes. Smiling to herself at the thought, she made some more counter-clockwise slashes with her wand. The next salamander she hit didn't even see it coming.

Finished with her practical homework, Lux waved goodbye to her best friend before skipping out of the arena.

Okay, hold on. Just hold the freaking phone.

WHY was it that Glacius was working perfectly for him but Glacius Duo had to be a pain in the neck? He glanced down at his wand and frowned. Was it the wand movement? Couldn't be. He knew that it was different, since he had to slag his wand in the forward motion to try and get the spell to work but was that REALLY where he was failing at this? Jeez, he thought his wand movement had been fantastic.

Grayson ha a right mind to stand there and practice the wand movement but something told him that there wouldn't be enough time. Salamander's and all. He had to try and freeze them and practising and letting them get away was out of the question. So, he tightened his grip on his wand and kept his eyes peeled for those creatures. Needed to be alert in case any of them jumped out at him ran--

SALAMANDER!

"Glacius Duo!" UGH. No, come ON! Work! "Glacius Duo!" Forward slash, Whitty, forward slash! "Glacius Duo!!!!!"

.....................

He did it.

There was a frozen salamander there. All icy.

HE FREAKING DID IT.

The salamander DID freeze, but Dot wasn't stupid. Dima'd helped. They got that one together... maybe both of their spells did it, or maybe Dima was just actually a much better wizard than Dot. She gave him a very serious consideration before movement from the fire distracted her again. Staring at Dima was always fun. She'd do that later.

"I see another one." This time, Dot sat down hard on the floor and extended her wand, pointing it at the salamander and thinking very hard about cold stuff. The tip of her tongue protruded from the corner of her mouth as she thought about popsicles, icicles, snowballs... her common room. ColdcoldCOLD. And... "Glacius."

Did it work? Why... couldn't she see anything? OH! Dot opened her eyes and looked for the salamander she'd been trying to freeze. "DIMADIMA." She reached out to tug his pant leg. "I did it! I froze one!"

Ready with her wand in hand, Beverly stood at the entrance of the dueling arena. Her hair was tied up in a braid, all suit up in comfy jeans and leather ankle high boots. Beverly Wayne was ready for this practice shindig.

Her leather jacket had been a bad decision, it was too warm for her in here, so that was tossed aside into the stands. She would have folded it IF she had not seen something bright scurry across the room.

Then another...and another.

Eyes zooming in, she smirked. It was salamanders! Facts about them crossed her mind at once. Their blood in particular in potions. She stared at them almost greedily, her potion-wired mind thinking of uses for them.

As another little critter ran by, she shook her head, snapping herself from her thoughts. Right. She was here to practice. On that note Beverly decided to start out with a warm up.

Tracking a certain salamander, she waited until it reached the center of the arena and pointed her wand at it. "Glacius!"

Her spell froze as it. Unfortunately, it froze a spot on the floor, as the salamander scurried off, glancing back at her as if saying, "HA! LOSER!"

She'll show it. Hmph!

... well, okay. Dot wasn't that gullible, and he should have known she would see right through that. But it didn't matter, 'cause Dima had meant it when he said she was the best witch he knew, and she was proving it with that spell casting. 'Cept was she trying to pants him while she was at it?

["I saw! That was the best charm I've ever seen done!" He nodded sincerely, only glancing away from her when something red caught the corner of his eye. Was that...?

"Glacius Duo!" Point. Wait... no, it wasn't a point. Stupid.

Forward slash? "Glacius Duo!" Aha. Not only could this Toussaint handle fire, but he had mastered ice as well. Meet your maker, elements.

She heard a few people practicing the other spell, Glacius Duo...but Eden wasn't sure if she was quite ready for that one since she BARELY had a handle on regular GLACIUS.

Eden had her wand at the ready--"Glacius glacius glacius glacius glacius glacius glacius glacius glacius....GLACIUS." She said a lot. And she did the wand motion...she had to be READY and VIGILANT. If another little SALAMANDER thing popped out at her she couldn't FREAK out this time and tick it off with WATER. SHE HAD ALMOST DIIIIIIED LAST TIME.

Not really.

but Eden was sure setting a salamander on WATER was a bad idea. It's not like it hurt the thing--FREEZING was what they needed to practice. She wondered around a bit..where were those THINGS hiding, ehhh? She squinted around--until---

"HIAYH!" she cried suddenly, as a salamander JETTED out at her--they were quick little guys, weren't they?! "GLACIER!" she cried, and then she felt STUPID and her cheeks turned red and she had to LEAP out of the way of some major fire---"FUDGE--GLACIUS! GLACIUS!" she cried, and the spell whizzed from her wand, and the salamander was...FROZEN.

GLACIER. EDEN MCGEEE. GLACIER? REALLY? She berated herself. Her chest was moving up and down rapidly...and she honestly..UGH. Was disgusted with herself. She was the worst....FREEZER ever. And NOT the muggle kind...NOPE.

She gritted her teeth. That salamander was suppose to stay there and freeze. She would have unfroze it eventually. Jeez. What a butt-head.

Being the Wayne she was, Beverly tracked that same salamander, never lifting her gaze from it, and pointed her wand at it again. Her spell had succeeded the first time, it was the salamander who'd ruined it by running off.

Just before she was about to cast, Beverly switched from Glacius to it's sister spell. With a forward slash of her wand, she cast: "Glacius Duo!"

It required more focus, more intent, but she had done well casting it during DADA so she didn't doubt herself. Confidence came in handy when spell casting, her brother had told her that during training this past summer.

The salamander slumped in a heap, its tail being the only thing moving. It twitched, then stopped all at once. She was sure it was still alive, just momentarily knocked out.

She did it!

"What's the motion for that one? The Duo one?" Dot let go of Dima's pant leg and scuttled across crab-style to sit next to the salamander she'd frozen on the floor. Professor hadn't really specified what they'd do with these, and she was sort of thinking about keeping it in one of the freezers in the kitchens until she needed it for something else.

Like setting Zahra Kettleburn on fire for hurting Kyroh's feelings. Or Lex, if bad Lex returned. Or anyone who made her people upset. Kyroh's feelings were butterfly fragile, but Dot was evenly more protective of Dima's. If his big happy smile ever flickered, she'd put someone's LIGHTS OUT.

Anyway. "The best. Yes, thanks, it was. But you did a DUO, so you're the cleverest of the clever Ravenclaws, aren't you?" She shoved the frozen salamander towards him and followed on her hands and knees. "I'd like to try the Duo. Like you."

"Duo is a forward slash, and Tria is one to the side," Dima recited confidently. It had taken a while to memorize those movements, but DADA was one of his most difficult subjects, and Dot was smart. He certainly hadn't wanted to slow her down today; if that meant having to spend a while studying the spells and how to cast them, then so be it.

The cleverest? A beam crossed his face at the compliment, but they both knew he was far from obtaining that title. "Try it, then. You'll get it, and then we can find something more fun to do than sit around and freeze itty bitty salamanders."

Meanwhile... Dima was going to get this Tria out of the way. Side slash, right? "Glacius Tria!" Aaaaaand slash!

The creature he'd been pointing at was freezing over, and... it was obvious he'd been practicing, wasn't it?
