School had just begun and you already have found yourself coming to your first Divination class. Professor Cassie wants you comfortable so she hopes you read the notice and have worn your most comfy pajamas, she certainly has.
As you come up the Divination ladder the first thing you might notice is the change in decoration. This term the classroom is decorated in dark reds instead of reds and pinks. It's not as bright and has a more relaxing tone. The tables have been lowered and the chairs are now missing. In their place there are comfy pillows to sit on. On each table there are two freshly cleaned crystal balls ready to be used.
You'll notice the smell of lavender filling the room as well as quiet and calming music playing lightly in the background. There is plenty of tea for anyone who would like some and parchment at each table. Professor Cassie is sitting in a chair calm and relaxed sipping her peppermint tea and smiling to greet you.
On the board like in the past there is a note:
Quote:
Welcome please find a seat and take some tea. Please stay quiet for the beginning of class and just relax. Before we start please write something you are proud of and place it in the snap cup at the front of the room. Please do not touch the crystal balls until I tell you.
Doesn't the entire room just make you want to curl up and take a nap?
OOC: I've opened class a bit early, but will not officially start until tomorrow. I'm hoping to start it before I go to work, but if not it will be afternoon EST. Please make sure you familiarize yourself with SS and classroom rules.

Time to be quiet and relax? Did she want Eden to fall asleep? For real? But then she mentioned Smaug to CONNNOR---and Eden chuckled and laughed. His cat was so sassy. Way more sassy than Roddy or Daisy would ever be to Eden. HMPH. She waved at Connor, since she hadn't already, and winked his way before breaking into giggles and then trying to FOCUS. Apparently.
SPOILER!!: BB and Dec
Eden siiiiighed at Biance and shot her look as if to say, 'I'll explain after class, OKAY?' and just..tried to clear her mind and whatnot. It sounded like something you'd do before yoga..or meditation..maybe crystal balling was like...meditation. Hm. It was a thought. She took a deeeeeeep breath in--saw Declan staring at her like she was crazy-------and she lost focus.
Right. He probably didn't know her. She would have to explain to HIM after class, as WELL, who she was. 'Hey, hi, I'm Rorie's best friend ever, I've seen pictures of you--' yeah, Eden, not creepy at ALL. The brunette just flushed and looked down again. Right. right right right right....
GET YO' MIND CLEARED, MCGEE.
OKAY. So they got to try to DO stuff now. YAY. She took a deep breath and kind of did the whole...muggle-movie image of a psychic and put her hands around the ball--not TOUCHING it--it was probably SENSITIVE--and she just...relaxed and stared very hard into that crystal ball.
Maybe she even glared at it. Ugh. She hadn't touched her tea yet because she just didn't think it would do anything for her focus. She stared so hard at the ball she thought she was going to pop a blood vessel or something--she blinked suddenly, rapidly, and SIGHED.
The ball was still clear. She glanced over at Layla.
Her ball was just as clear. "Are you have trouble, too?" she asked, wide eyes, at Layla. Are all the classes at Hogwarts like this? ugh. She bit her lip and stared back at her own ball. She leaned in, getting REAL close to it, nose mere CENTIMETERS away, and she squinted at it...
Nothin'.
She SIGHED again. Was there too much negativity in her? Probably. Eden was a very moody person, typically. She ran her hands through her hair and tried again--swirl--please--smoke--something show up IN the crystal ball--PLEASE?
Layla could see that everyone else was fully engaged in staring at their crystal ball that their thoughts had been clouded by the prospect of being able to see something. And kids apparently were. Persuasion was certainly a powerful thing. The Professor put the thought in the students minds that they'd be able to see something and so now suddenly they all were.
People were incredibly gullible.
Staring back into the 'ball of wisdom' Layla appeared bored and disinterested and she wasn't even trying. But then along came Eden who seemed all disappointed that she couldn't see anything in hers. "I don't see anythin' cos it's a load of rubbish" she muttered under her breath so only Eden could hear. Her opinion was her own, no one else needed to know what they were.
"Besides, sittin' in a classroom full of pryin' eyes and.." A slightly cuckoo in the head professor. "..All this fancy stuff ain't exactly my idea of relaxin'" she stated, still lowering her voice as to not 'distract the others'. Or just to shut out nosey so-and-so's.
Luckily the list of questions forming in her head hadn't broken the connection yet. She could feel her mind start thinking and feeling about things. She quickly tried to regain her focus. But it was no use the crystal ball was blink.
Really. Maybe it was the crystal ball she just didn't feel a connection with it. They wasn't really clicking or something like that. Could she trade or something? Nah she would try just one more time.
Again she closed her eyes. Clearing my mind yet again this was the what third time now. So inner eye inner eye where are you? Where did you go? It was right there and now it was gone. She really starting to rethink this being excited about a crystal ball reading.

Marigold's crystal ball was all foggy. She narrowed her eyes slightly, trying to bring forward visions or whatever they were trying to do. She leaned forward on her forearms, waiting for herself to become enlightened or something like that.
She blinked slowly after keeping her eyes open and watery, so a droplet of water bubbled on her cheekbone. She wiped it away slowly, not wanting to be torn out of this.
Dark shapes were forming. Slightly. They kind of looked like bushes. She tilted her head to the right. Or.... clouds? Phoenix's hair?
Cutty remained in his limp flower position. Bent over his desk and looking sort of listless. His thoughts were simply on his plan to convince Proffesor Morgan that he in fact had seen something in his crystal ball, though that was untrue save for the reflections of things around him. He was probably late for his medicative potion. Or maybe this was very premeditated and the pros outweighed the cons making this look like a viable option.
"I think it means we'll be in fer trials and tribulations, Professor." He said calmly as if casually informing her. That might have been his actual interpretation, though, had he in fact seen tree roots.

Trying to clear his mind was NOT going to be easy. His brain was LOUD, ok? All he could think about was Sophie and Grayson, and how he really missed Baldwin the crup from back home, and how his mum was probably going into labor any day now, and a certain girl...WAIT. Where had THAT come from? Blinking, Caleb shook his head. GET OUT OF THERE, BRAIN.
Ugh. This was going to be so hard.
Trying not to focus on anything but the shape of the orb in front of him, he stared into the middle of the crystal ball and tried to think of nothing except the orb.
It was kind of the same color as a rain cloud. Hmm. He wondered if it would rain today, it was certainly cold enough, maybe he'd have some hot apple cider...
SHUT UP BRAIN.

Swear to Merlin, his crystal ball was being so freaking stubborn now. He was FOCUSING, man. What more did it WANT?! A hug? A pat? A kiss on its stupidly annoying and shiny surface????
Yeah, Whitty was dead annoy--
............... OH?
Eyes wide, the fifth year sat right up and STARED into the crystal ball. Was it??????? The mistiness was disappearing a BIT. Slowly but surely. His eyes narrowed while he egged the crystal ball on in his head. Come ON. He wanted to see something interesting, thank you very much. So if the inside of the crystal ball could form a shape and show him SOMETHING, he'd be dead chuffed. Might even head out of the class feeling like he was GOOD at this class, which he did think so before this nonsense stepped in.
Speaking of the crystal ball, Grayson watched intensely as the inside changed, swirled around some more and...........
............... Nothing. Zero. Not even a freaking shape.
Scowling, Grayson sat back in his seat and crossed his arms across his chest. Was the class done? Because he was done with this.
Just people. That's what Toby could see. Except... not really people, more like one person. The same person, sometimes appearing more clear and distinct than other times, no longer walking about, just sort of... existing... and appearing and then disappearing and then reappearing again. The Hufflepuff frowned into the crystal ball, not trying to make sense of anything yet, but just interested in what was going to happen, if anything.
He became pretty entranced with this smoky figure whose identity he couldn't quite pinpoint, watching him swirl in and out of existence within the crystal ball. Until, without warning, the crystal ball went completely dark, almost pitch black, and Toby felt all kinds of wrong on every level. Without realising what he was doing, the Hufflepuff sat back up straight and leaned away from the crystal ball with something akin to urgency. What was that that Professor Morgan had said about feeling unwell? 'Cause that was a thing that was happening.
Toby blinked at the crystal ball, which was still all misty and swirly and not dark at all, and was already going back to its clear state. Whew, man... overactive imagination + Divination = weird.
The Hufflepuff sat back and glanced at his watch. Well... wow. That time had gone really quickly? Judging by how lost he'd got in that activity, Toby decided it might be a good idea to wait it out until Professor Morgan said they were done. He was still feeling a little iffy anyway, and was keen to avoid doing the thing that appeared to have caused it. It was cool. He could chill out and wait.

awesome, atleast he wasn't doing anything wrong. giving her a little smile he sat there and listened to what she was saying. time to give this another time" he thought as he did the same breathing exercise and then let his mind go blank.. peeking open an eye he looked at the ball.. he was sure he was seeing a book… well he thought he did.. but he was pretty sure he was looking at one.. He wondered what a book meant if thats what he was seeing. Taking out his quill he wrote down the image of a book because he might as well document it.
Keeping her eyes close, Beverly inhaled a deep breath, then let it out. In and out...In and out. In...and...out. This was actually quite relaxing. Her shoulders fell from their normal straight posture. Her back and arms relaxed, and her eyes didn't burn from not blinking for Merlin knows how many minutes.
This was quite...nice.
Her mind drifted, skipping from thought to thought. She reminded herself to shoo distraction and...she might be succeeding...maybe...

Squinting, Lux leaned in closer to try to see the image clearer but it vanished. Ughhh. Back to seeing nothing again which really sucked. This class was HARD. It was a good thing that she liked a challenge. But how was she supposed to see the image more clearly?
Biting her lip, she raised her hand. Professor Cassie would be able to help her.

Ok, Caleb thought...he saw a dog? Maybe. It might have been a wolf. Or just a figment of his imagination, because he was thinking of Baldwin at home and animals in general and how he was trying to convince his parents to adopt a puppy - after all, they were having a baby, Caleb needed SOMEONE to hang out with nevermind his sister and the dog they already had.
He had no idea if he was really seeing a dog or not, but he took notes on it anyways. What did seeing a dog mean? Other than the fact that MAYBE his parents would cave during Christmas and he WOULD get a dog...he was going to go with that. Yup. He made a note of it, and then went back to looking into the nothingness.

Her head fell forward and it startled the Slytherin up. What? Huh? Oh. Well...this wasn't part of Scrying. Falling asleep, that is. Blinking and sitting up, she rubbed her eyes once more. Her body had relaxed to the point of it tricking itself that it was nap time. Bah!
Wiggling into place and focusing solely on the Crystal Ball, Beverly deeply stared into it. She blinked when she needed to, but she did NOT close her eyes for a longer amount of time. If she did, she was sure she'd fall asleep for real that time.
Finding a spot her eyes seemed to stay on, she GAZED into the Crystal Ball. There was no fog. No shapes. Nothing. Just...glass. Crystal. This wasn't as simple as she had expected. She either kept thinking about things forming inside the ball or if she was doing it right. There was no in-between. She couldn't clear her mind, and the harder she tried, the more she thought.
It was really, really hard to clear one's mind when life was all sorts of out of the ordinary.
Sophie tried really hard to relax and not think of anything - she felt silly closing her eyes to do so, only wanting to peek around at everyone to see if anyone was watching her relaxation techniques - and kept glancing at Tobes. She thought about him, and how he'd been coping with various changes since the summer. She thought about Cat and Mo and how much they were missed, and how her current fight with Culloden was weird and stupid and absolutely not her fault even if he tried to act like it was. She thought about Thompson and Fuller and their forthcoming marriage.
The more she tried not to think about anything, the more thoughts raced through her brain.
Sophie tried the slow, deep breathing Morgan had recommended, deciding to turn her gaze down toward her lap instead of closing her eyes completely. She'd never been able to find her "inner eye" - she'd never tried, really, but she was already certain that it would be impossible. Unless she was by herself away from all distractions. But the music wasn't even helping, the deep breathing wasn't helping, even when she lifted her gaze to try to see something in the crystal ball, all she could see was her reflection.
Merlin. Ira Banner hadn't said this was a subject she needed to excel at to be a Wandmaker, right?
Thornton decided to just sit there. He'd seen Grandfather Baines in the ball, or at least he'd thought he had, and he was not looking again. Nope.
He was just going to sit here, staring at the empty space above the orb and wait for Professor Morgan to give them some sort of instruction. He dropped his hands to his lab and picked at his cuticles, well aware that Grandfather would not have approved.
Chewing the inside of his lip, Thornton wondered if he had imagined it.
This... wasn't working. The more she WANTED to see something in the crystal ball, the more angry she got at her reflection, and she was immediately discouraged - Sophie was very used to things being straightforward, simple, and practical - but in divination there were all sorts of... deeper things involved. This was no potions class. She didn't even know that she WANTED to relax her mind - well, of course some calming down of it would be good - but she... wasn't sure how it was so easy for some people. She peeked around at the other students - some looked like they were having a little trouble, too, but many almost had sort of a glazed look in their eyes like they were already totally into this.
Her thoughts briefly turned to Toby again, but she shook the reason off. Hahaha. No. No. She couldn't.
...
Suppressing laughter at her own thoughts, Sophie leaned forward, burying her head in her hands briefly in another attempt to keep the distractions at bay. She breeeeeathed slowly and deeply, gently rolling her shoulders in an attempt to completely relax her posture, and tried to focus on letting her whole body nearly go limp in relaxation. Aaaand... she was drifting off to sleep...
Toothless - Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror - DoctorDonna
Clearing ones mind.
Once more letting all thoughts and images go.
Benjamin ran those phrases through his mind over and over again as his eyes remained closed. This time he wanted to succeed in some kind of focus. This time to open his eyes and perhaps get something...anything. He might not know what to think about the whole concept of scrying but he was keeping an open mind. Not fooling around like a couple of fellow students seemed to be doing as he could still hear the professor.
Maybe they were better learning this one on one, or in smaller groups. Less chance of being distracted by others that way because this lion wasn't managing to block everyone out. That was for certain. Taking another deep breath to gather himself one last time, Benny finally opened his eyes once more and letting his gaze fall on a random spot on the crystal ball. Once settled, he focused in the chosen spot, almost staring in an attempt to get a reaction.
Did he just see movement near the bottom of the crystal?
As her body went limp even further as she fell asleep, her head sunk forward further in one grand motion and... she jolted awake, her whole posture straightening up. She blinked, briefly confused by her surroundings, but realized she was in divination class. Right. She shot a glance at Morgan to make sure the woman wasn't about to reprimand her or something - how could she, really? she was just relaxed - and had enough clarity of the situation at hand to turn her gaze to the crystal ball, since her mind was, at that moment, clear of everything except that she had just fallen asleep in an actual classroom setting.
She peered at the ball, her mind relatively blank and her posture instinctively relaxing upon realizing she didn't seem to be in any sort of trouble, and... Sophie stared long and hard at the crystal ball, her gaze slowly changing out of focus.
And she spaced out, thinking about absolutely nothing without realizing it, her eyelids heavy and threatening to close. She was so sleepy. So sleepy. A morning run hadn't been a good idea today - if she had realized they were going to be encouraged to be in a sort of zen state today she'd probably have slept in that morning - and, much to her zoned-out surprise, it looked like... there was a sort of... swirling cloudy-thing happening in her crystal ball.
Just the swirling, and even though she was still sort of zoned out, the corners of her mouth turned upward in a smile. SOMETHING WAS HAPPENING.

"Oh...and I hope you don't mind me calling her Zelda, professor." he said as he pointed at the innocent looking crystal ball. Getting to a personal level with one's crystal ball should help, yeah?
Merlin's beard. He'd do anything just to get his sphere to work!

And then there was Professor Cassie screamingtelling Zahra to lay her hands off of her crystal ball. And...5 points from Gryffindor. Ethan glanced around to get that look for Beverly.
Now...can she see what he meant about letting Zahra do her thing?
"Now that is a fantastic question. Crystal balls of course are not living. They do not have a heart that beats, a brain, nor anything like that, but they are a magical object. So our mind and connection with them brings them into a living type of state." She gave Ethan a encouraging smile. "You're doing wonderfully Ethan, do not give up. If you saw mist then it was most certainly real. " She snapped happily that he saw it. That was exciting news annnnd he was naming his crystal ball. "Ethan that is very good to name and get so connected with your ball. You will be seeing images in no time."

Zahra knew better than to argue, so she just took it (and all the looks from her classmates, too) but she was pretty upset. She put her head down to wait out the rest of class.
Well she just felt horrible. I saw that in class last term. I know you could do scrying if you just put your mind too it. " She knew that wouldn't make things better most likely, but she kind of thought that maybe something later in class would.

"Okay Professor," he hung his head sadly. But he wasn't going to cry because APPARENTLY that's not what scrying is about. HMPH.
Instead, he just stared into the crystal ball, trying to will it to say something, anything. Why wasn't this thing working? And how was he supposed to clear his mind of thoughts? Isn't that what minds were supposed to do? Have thoughts? It's practically a law.
Giving Zander a little pat on the shoulder and a few quiet snaps, she knew he would try his hardest and she didn't want to bother him as he did.

There was the image of a piece of parchment--she didn't try to linger on what the heck that could mean, though, or else she might not see anything else! The parchment drifted away--and she could see the image of a black dog--on closer inspection, RODDY! Her dog! She grinned at the sight--she sure did miss him! She hoped he was all right. Her dog had been perfectly fine when she had left for Hogwarts. By the time, though, that she was paying attention to her crystal ball again, it was clear...no images anymore. She rubbed her forehead and siiiighed. She wanted to see more, gosh darn it! Maybe she would talk to the professor after class?
And now her head was throbbing."Professor?" she raised her hand and spoke so sooooftly. "Is it normal to get a headache?" she asked, hoping it WAS because if not--well she didn't even KNOW. It's not like she would go all the way to the hospital wing for a mere headache. She would just have to stick it out, yeah?
Looking to a young Ravenclaw Cassie walked over, "Oh yes it can be very normal. Especially at the beginning and in very advance readings were a voice starts to talk through you." She had that happen once or twice, but it wasn't something she fully remembered in the reading state.

Unrelaxed, incredibly bored and more dubious than she had ever been before, Layla merely flicked her quill between her fingers as she watched the other students try their hardest in giving themselves false hope. By the looks on many students faces, the majority of the had been unsuccessful in their endeavors. No surprise there then.
Layla wasn't even sure what exactly she was doing in this class considering she had not believed in it from the start. Pretty much the only reason she had been there was because it was the first class of the term and she had promised a lot of people that she would give it that chance that it required, you know pretend like she was interested or actually start believing in that rubbish.
It was obvious however with all the scamming fortune tellers and tarot readers that divination was not a subject that should be taught in schools, in fact the majority of the subjects were way beyond reasoning in her opinion. Who needed to know how to read the stars or inscribing strange symbols or what numbers actually meant. Physics and Latin and Maths covered all of those. Normal subjects taught at normal schools.
The blonde continued in an attempt to relax herself although her attention was mainly focused on the people around her that kept asking questions. How she was supposed to relax with all the interruptions she wasn't sure. Allowing herself to close her eyes and delve deep into her thoughts, the fifteen year old sighed inwardly before opening them and glancing at the ball.
Well she just felt horrible. Yeah yeah yeah. The extra little speech from Professor Morgan in front of everyone was just kind of insult to injury. Zahra turned away from her, but nodded that yeah yeah she heard her. Fat lot of good it did.
SO Zahra wrote down what she saw:
Nothing, nothing, nothing, then my house points go in the hole, then more nothing and no house elves.
After that, she doodled on her paper to pass the time.

Hadleigh opened her eyes at hearing the Professor state that class was just about over. She took out a quill and some parchment on which she wrote.
It took a lot of time and all my concentration but I managed to get a glimpse of my snake Seether from back home. I guess I saw him because I miss him?
Chewing on her lower lip she signed her name and date on the parchment and set it aside. She thought she had done really well for her first class and she was quite satisfied with the outcome. So now she sat back and waited for class to end.
The swirling of the crystal ball was mesmerizing in a whole new way and seemed to suck her further into a trance-like state. Sophie watched, her gaze shifting into focus as she tried to see... something in the swirling fog. Maybe some sort of shape or a person or maybe if she was really lucky, a whole situation...
Did it even work that way? She wasn't sure.
But the more she wanted to see something now, the more discouraged Sophie got as she... could see nothing but the fog itself. No defined shapes. Just fogginess, and the swirling of it was slowing as she grew more frustrated. Her mind had drifted to the unfairness of how easy it was for some people to succeed at this and how useless the subject itself seemed to be. She didn't need scrying or divination as a whole to be good at making wands, did she? Ira HADN'T said she needed to be good at it! Maybe she'd drop it next term so she could focus on the ones he HAD said. Yeah. She didn't need this class.
...But that didn't stop her from wanting to be successful at it. Not being able to do something? That wasn't the way she liked to do things.
By now, her concentration had drifted so far that he crystal ball was nearly back to its original state, the fog mostly dissipated. And Sophie sighed. Lame.

see, just look how amazing she was. she couldn't stop being nice even if she tried. Giving her another warm smile he continued on working on trying to see anything in the crystal ball. looking around he wondered if people were actually seeing things because he surely wasn't.
Maybe he'll just sit here and stare at the ball and if he see's anything he'll write it down but he needed to make sure that at least he was looking busy and like he was fully into the task, Bay he is oh so smart.
Once where nothing was all of the sudden Pips was in the room holding a nice try of cookies. He looked around for the nice Professor lady and when he found her he lifted the tray. Pips knew just where to put them. She had given very clear instruction.
"Pips come just as Professor Ma'am said, Pips brings cookies for studenties just like Professor Ma'am wanted."
Setting down the cookies he honked his nose twice before he was gone again and all that was left was the empty space and now a nice tray of chocolate chip cookies.
