THEY WERE GONNA GO FLYING NOW!!!

Yes, flying, because if this Hippogriff thought for even a second that she'd let it stay on the ground after all the work she put into its feathers, it had another think coming. One lap around the lake at the Prefect event hardly counted for anything. This was a full on race, nevermind where the finish line was and she was eager to get started.

"We're winning and if we don't win, we're at least going fast." She informed her creature companion as she patted at his neck. Had to make this clear you know because a slow ride and a loss would NOT go well. You couldn't have both. She needed to enjoy this and that could only be achieved through speed.

Once the Hippogriff lowered itself, Lex climbed on, holding tight for the anticipated rise that was sure to follow. Knowing it was coming made it easy enough to keep a firm grip and not lose her balance all that much. "Excellent. Now what'd you say we get off the ground, hmm?" Lex would be taking that sqawk for a yes, on account of the fact it was already spreading it's wings. Now THIS was what she was talking about! She clicked her feet against it's side at which point it broke into a run, wings flapping about as it did. The running motion of its legs continued for a little time even after they'd hit the air at which point it darted.

#3 on track again!

“Not noowww!” he managed to hiss near the ear of his Hippogriff. “Need your eyes on the prize, Helios,” he added, hoping using the beasts new name would coax him on the right track. Noble, powerful... all of that, it was what WINNERS were.

It was clear at this point that is was still too interested in the bird. “A bit further and then you can double back! I'll help you get as many birds as you want!” he negotiated. Could one negotiate with a beast? Was that possible? At any rate, he was willing to give it a try. Maybe this was what Glendower had been on about with that whole classification thing.

“C'mon! Yarr!” he encouraged Helios, giving him gentle taps on the hind to get him spurring forward toward the finish line again. The creatures wings flapped with great force around him, the speed propelled them forward, ahead of the others, or at least some of the others.... it was hard to really see much of where people were from where he was.

They were cloooooseee! So close, and yet so far!

They were all ready for flight, or so Jasmine hoped. Remembering what the Professor had said, she clicked her feet against Buddy's hind quarters and thought, "There's no place like home". That was really a dumb thing to think, but Jasmine couldn't help herself. While her mind was busy making Wizard of Oz references, Buddy let out a squawk......and they were off.

Buddy took off so rapidly that Jasmine instinctively tightened her grip on him. They rose into the air and were flying in no time. Maybe Buddy did have a competitive streak because he was streaking through the air, fast. OK he was competitive and fast, but apparently he was also a Hippogriff with ADD because he allowed himself to be distracted by the first bird that he saw. "No Buddy. It's not time for a snack. We've got to keep focused. Keep your eyes on the finish line." That was going to be easier said than done.

#4 praises and directions and motivation weeeeee

This is what he imagined it would be like to be a jockey... only, in the sky!!! Wait, wizarding jockey? WAS THAT A THING?!......... He was short enough, for now, and there were always shrinking solutions to make that a thing. Did they even race Hippogriffs? Or did they just race winged horses instead? Races DID seem like a horse thing more than a ... well... he actually couldn't say this wasn't a thing. Because they were flying, and they were flying fast.

Instinctively, Zeke leaned forward into Helios, whispering encouragements as they flew... but, why were they slowing down?

WHYYY?!?!?!!
...

It was then that he remembered Professor Thompson say when they wanted to slow down to stop they had to lean into their Hippogriff. WHOOOPS!

"No, no! Keep going! I'm sorry!" he let out as he leaned back away just enough to not be ON the beasts back.

Zeke tapped Helios' hind with his heels again.

"GO! GO! GOOO HELIOS! FLY LIKE THE TITAN OF THE SUN THAT YOU ARE!"

Wait. Did Titan's fly? Pfft, it didn't matter. This one did. They would win, and weeeeee! They'd just bond even more.

Zeke stole a glance over his shoulder, but if anyone was down on the ground, he couldn't see them. "Bit lower now boy," he informed, directing Helios to go lower, pointing and stroking the beasts neck in a downward motion. Helios squawked what he could only guess was understanding and sure enough they began a progressive descent toward the ground, toward that finish line!

Am I allowed to catch up? Catch up!

Oh jeez oh MAN.

He was behind AGAIN?! What in the name of Merlin?!

Luckily, the next part was all about mixing and whatnot and kinda reminded him of Potions. Kinda. Grayson took hold of the white liquid wash and poured the rest of it into the bucket. "Aguamenti!" A jet of water shot out of his wand and started pouring itself into the bucket. Riiiiiiight up until the halfway mark. Rough estimation was going on here. Uh huh.

Next came the part that required some elbow grease or whatever it was. Grabbing hold of a sponge, the fifth year dipped it into the wash and squeeeeeeeezed at it until some of the excess water had been taken away. Then, he reached up and started patting at the Hippogriff's head, who instantly started to move its head a little just because it wanted to be difficult like that. Or maybe it simply liked being washed but still. Difficult.

"I'm just cleaning up all your feathers, don't you worry." Was the Hippogriff unhappy with that? Tough luck. Scrubbing was happening, which reminded the boy all too much of the task of washing a car. His dad usually got him and his brother to wash the car during the summer which quickly escalated into a soapy water fight and the only person who was unimpressed was his mum.

Unlike those occasions, Grayson actually managed to clean the Hippogriff without making too much of a mess. So, grabbing the last sponge, he started dabbing away at the feathers again, trying to remove any excess water that was lurking beneath there. This included some pausing and squeezing of the sponge to get the excess water out but soon enough, he was done.

GOOD. Cleaning was difficult.

But was he gonna stop there? Oh NO. Not when he was so freaking behind.

"Alright, come on then, hippogriff, we're gonna get you out of the pool, mkay? Cause you're clean now and you don't need to stay there." Let's be real. "C'moooon!" Tug tug. "We have a race to win! Why would you want to stay in-- THAAAAAAT's it! Come on out now." The tugging was still happening but he didn't have to put as much pressure into it as he had to before since the Hippogriff was moving on his own as well.

Taking a fine comb, Grayson started combing the hippogriff's body. Aaaaaaaall of it. And all this cleaning was only making Grayson realise just how big hippogriffs were. They were freaking enormous! And reaching round to comb everything was soon becoming an exhausting task. He patted the feathers as well, just to make sure that it WAS drying and that the creature was comfortable.

See? He could be caring.

When that was done and the creature's feathers had been smoothed out, the Slytherin led the hippogriff outside of the pen. "Alright. I'm gonna give you some time to relax and whatnot," Though he didn't see why he had to since all the hippogriff had done was relax. "And then we're gonna go and win a race, mkay?"

#5 another bird but then flying low and landing to cross the finish line!

He was staring ahead through squinted eyes now, because hellooooo! WIND!...

They were almost there! Almost there! But they were going in REALLLLYYY fast, cause it WAS a race and all, and in the true spirit of a race, they were going SUPER fast. There was no point in doing something half heatedly, nope.

Zeke was beginning to think that Helios wanted this win as much as him, when ANOTHER bird took his fancy and he veered off course. NOOOO!!!

"No! No! C'mon boy, back the other way, there are more birds that way, and ferrets too... didn't you know? The winner will be treated like a King? YOU will be treated like a King!" It was true, because heck, he'd look after Helios if he had to. In fact, was that an option? Could he like, look after him properly? Like, always?

Directing Helios back toward the finish line, urging him on with more taps of his heel, Zeke held his breath. Held it, because this was it! He was going to cross ooovvveerrrr!!!!! "C'mon boy! C'mon Helios!" he cheered. He had leaned directed the Hippogriff lower to the ground so they were just barely flying above the surface now, and..........

....................... BAAAAAM!!!!!

Hooves were touching down now and pounding the earth as they CROSSED THE LINE! THEY CROSSSED THE LINE!!!

"WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Zeke cheered, welcoming his landing. His cheers were joined by soft squawking by Helios. SQUAWK SQUAAAWKKK SQUAWK!

Landing had been one thing, and now that he was completely flat against Helios' back, arms around his neck, the magestic beast came to a slowing halt, a number of paces beyond the finish line.

On they flew, with Jasmine speaking encouraging words to Buddy. She patted him every now and then, when she felt it was safe to release the death grip that she had around his neck. It was smooth sailing for a while and then.......Squirrel......Buddy must have seen something on the ground that peaked his interest. Zoooooom, downward they flew at a speed so fast that Jasmine was almost decapitated by a tree branch. Good thing that she had quick reflexes and managed to duck. Otherwise it would have been Nearly Headless Nick and Totally Headless Jasmine.

Her instincts told her to scream, but Jasmine didn't want to startle Buddy. That would be bad. Instead she said, "Up Buddy", in a very firm voice. At the same time, she tried to direct him with her body movements and hand pats. Just when Jasmine thought that they were coming in for a crash landing, Buddy pulled up and they began to rise again. "Buddy, you almost gave me a heart attack. Please don't do that again. I'll see if the Professor has some treats for you when we get back." She sure hoped that he did. A ferret or two would be nice.

Post 1- All aboard the Griff!

Race time!

"Ready, Grey Feathers? I'm sure you and I will make a great team.''
Yep. He was one hundred percent sure of that. Adi patted the Griff's head. After that, Grey Feathers got some gentle strokes and more pats so that it knelt down.

"Well done,'' the Puffer praised as he quickly and carefully hopped onto the majestic and awesome creature. Grey Feathers began to straighten and Adi hurriedly pressed his torso against its back. Man! Those creatures stood up fast!

But hey. They were all set to go!

Edward Penguin 11-10-2014 02:35 PM

Catch up and off we go

Ian continued to Clean off the hippogriff as he used the sponge to pat and draw through the feathers/hindquarters until Ruffles was clean. It was rather nice and soothing to conduct such a repetitive activity. He was rather pleased with how things had gone. Before he knew, Ian had gotten Ruffles all cleaned out. He coaxed the large creature from the tiny pool and allowed him to walk about a bit to get him dried off properly (and maybe to show off that he wasn't dead yet).

The professor indicated it was possible to take the hippogriff for a flight. Ian looked up into Ruffles eyeball and asked, You wanna go, boy? Ruffles began to stomp his hoof on the ground as if in answer. Apparently he'd been asked this question before. Ian wondered where one kept hippogriffs for a class. It didn't seem like Hogwarts had some sort of barn for animals, though it did have nice fences. Perhaps the barn was hidden to keep students from wandering in.

Ian looked around to see how the professor and other students were getting on.

Post 2- Off we go! And first obstacle.

"I think flying would be cool, right Grey Feathers?'' Why keep the Griff on the ground when they could both be in the air? Besides, Grey Feathers seemed to have agreed. It had emitted a happy squawk. Or at least that's what it sounded like to Adi.

"Let's go then!'' The Puffer lightly clicked his heels against the hinds of the Griff. Grey Feathers squawked again as he took off into a bit of a run before spreading his wings and soaring into the air.

THIS WAS AWESOMEEEEE!

Annnnd ohmigosh! There was a particularly large tree branch right ahead of them! EEEP! "Come on, Grey Feathers. Bank a little to the left, please.'' Adi said that in a calm voice. Best not to panic the Griff.

Jasmine still wasn't sure what Buddy had been after on the ground. It must have been very tempting though, the way he went into a nosedive. Did they have blinders for Hippogriffs? That would definitely be useful right about now.

Jasmine and Buddy were flying along calmly and without incident, for a while. "You are doing such a good job. Just keep flying and we'll be back in no time." The praise was working until another bird had the nerve to fly nearby. Amazingly, Jasmine saw it before Buddy did and that was to her advantage.....or so she thought. Once the Hippogriff spotted the bird, he made a beeline for it. Unfortunately, the bird wasn't flying in the direction of the finish line.

"Come on Buddy!", Jasmine shouted. Patting his right side, she tried to make the animal move back toward the left. She also leaned her body to the left to try to guide him that way. "No birds buddy. We're almost there. Come on." Jasmine could almost feel the indecision inside of Buddy. It was as if the was thinking, Bird...Race....Race....Bird. Finally, his competitive nature won the battle and Buddy veered back on course.

FearlessLeader19 11-10-2014 02:48 PM

Post 3- Avoiding collision.

Adi remained calm as he and Grey Feathers came closer and closer to the dreaded tree branch. He was sure they would crash into it...uh oh. Involuntarily he closed his eyes, waiting for the impact.

But none came. The Puffer opened his eyes. They were still soaring along. He glanced back and noticed the branch behind them. They had made it! Grinning, Adi said to his Griff partner, ''Excellent job. You scared me there for a few moments but great job avoiding the branch.''

Adi glanced down and noticed they were a bit off course. Time to fix that. "Hey, Grey Feathers. Can you edge to the right? We're off course.'' Grey Feathers squawked as he followed the instructions. "You're one awesome Griff, Grey Feathers.''

Daydreamer11 11-10-2014 03:09 PM

Post 5- To the Finish Line

Jasmine could see the finish line in the distance. All they needed to do was make it across the line with no drama. She should have known that there was no way it'd be that easy and of course, it wasn't. "Buddy we just have to make it to that finish line right up there. You can do it boy." Jasmine didn't know whether or not any of her classmates had already finished the race. However, Buddy was not the only competitive one in the house. Jasmine wanted to win.....just because, but getting points wouldn't hurt either.

Well apparently Buddy decided to challenge himself because he tried to make the last leg of the race as exciting as possible. As if he sensed the finish line was near, Buddy went into another gear. They were flying reall fast, but that wasn't all. Instead of flying straight ahead, Buddy took the slalom route. Back and forth they went, around and between trees. Jasmine tried to pretend that she was in control, but she really wasn't. "Come on Buddy, bring it home", she said. Jasmine leaned left then leaned right, trying to direct the Hippogriff around trees. Buddy seemed to know what he was doing though, thank goodness. When they were just yards from the finish line, Jasmine leaned forward and pressed her body against Buddy's. He went into his final, steep descent. Before she new it, they were touching down. They had made it.....in one piece....two pieces.....whatever.

Jasmine placed her arms around Buddy's neck and gave him a big hug. "You are amazing Buddy, you know that?" More hugs and pats were given and now Jasmine had to make good on her promise to find him a snack.

Post 4- avoiding moar obstacles.

And so they were on course again for a while. The duo dodged some more trees and their branches. There were no more problems until Grey Feathers decided to get himself distracted by two blue coloured birds. Then they really veered off course and they lost precious time on the race too.

It took MUCH, MUCH coaxing but Adi finally got Grey Feathers to leave the birds alone which flew off with looks of relief on their faces. It looked like that to Adi, anyway. "Come on, Grey Feathers,'' he said calmly. "To the left. We're off course again but we can fix that.''

The Griff shifted. "A little more. Some more...and that's it! Excellent. Let's keep flying like this, yeah? You're doing a wonderful job.''

Edward Penguin 11-10-2014 04:04 PM

Post 2, taking flight

Ian was talking to Ruffles about flight when the hippogriff lowered himself, like Ian had seen others do. He took that to mean that Ruffles was all about some mounted flight. This could be awesome...or he could fall in a crumpled heap on the ground. Ian wasn't too worried about winning because of course his initial mistakes with the creature had put him behind some, but he was going to fly. As he settled on Ruffles back, he looked for hand holds. No saddle, no girdle, nothing to hold onto. This was interesting. Ian looked around and noticed that pretty much everyone else was gone. Hmmm.... how to keep from falling to near certain death and altogether certain severe injury while riding a hippgriff? Ian wondered. He looked forward and didn't see ears to hold onto (which would likely cause pain to the beasty). he didn't see a mane to hold onto either (feathers on the head would probably pull out and cause Ian to tumble). Ian tried to reach around the neck of Ruffles and that was too great a chasm to bridge and so was tossed. Ian did notice that the professor had lain against the back of the creature, but not much more than that. Ian decided that his best course of action was to follow the professor's example and maybe, kinda sorta, hopefully hold onto the creature where the wings met the body and hoped he didn't impede Ruffles too much. Ian laid against Ruffles, grasped as tightly as he could and gave a soft jab or two into Ruffles sides.

Ian felt the creature rise swiftly and take off in chase of the others. The last of which he could kinda see. As the speed picked up, Ian wished he'd brought some goggles. The wind was rushing past his face and Ruffles was taking him on the ride of his life. Ian was whooping and smiling and thoroughly enjoying himself as he rode on Ruffles toward the obstacles, the first of which was rapidly approaching and Ian decided to let Ruffles choose the course.

FearlessLeader19 11-10-2014 04:08 PM

Post 5- Crossing the Finish Line.

They were flying on course! Mercifully there had been no more bird distractions but there had been more trees (seriously, where did they all come from? O_O ) but the dynamic duo avoided them all skillfully. Adi had been right. They did make a great team.

They were nearing the finish line. Adi could see it in the distance. "Almost there,'' he happily informed Grey Feathers. They were going to make it without anymore distractions... ugh! He thought about that too soon. Another bird had caught Grey Feathers's attention and the Griff was now going off course again as it after the small animal.

"Come on, Grey Feathers. Let's leave the bird for now. You can chase all the birds you want later.'' Erm...his words had no effect. Adi tried some more, continuing in the same soothing voice. This went on for sometime until the bird got bored of Grey Feathers and its attempt to gobble him up so it fluttered off in another direction.

WHEW!

"Alright, we need to get back on course. A little to the right, please. That's it...just a bit more...and hold it! Well done.''
Adi decided it was time they get ready to land so he leaned forward and pressed himself against the Griff. The ground was getting bigger which meant they were going in for the landing.

Grey Feather soared over the finishing line before going into a bit of a trot then halting altogether. After the Griff had knelt, Adi hopped off. "Awesome job, Grey Feathers! You did it!'' Cue more pats for the Griff!

Angel was worried, very worried, she didn't really know what the Hippogriff would be like to race. "Benny will it be alright?" Angel suddenly asked. "They don't go crazy when they race right?" Angel hoped not.

Post 3 On da course

Ian was flying on the back of a hippogriff. How would this story go back home? He couldn't obviously tell his mates he was flying on the back of a flying horse bird, now could he? Stupid Decree of Secrecy. This would be the best story of the summer. And he hadn't made a ton of new friends who he could owl with this term. However, that probably shouldn't be the first thing on his mind as he was racing through an airborne obstacle course. This point was made rather quickly as Ian watched a tree branch rush within 3 inches of HIS FACE! Ruffles didn't seem to be worried, but Ian kinda liked his eyeballs where they were. Additionally, Ruffles wasn't exactly following any sort of trail. He was just pushing forward, wings making great whooshy noises as they were propelled through the air.

Ian decided now was a good time to pay attention. He started to talk to Ruffles. Hey there, buddy! Doing great. Let's just try to stay on course. Of course Ian had to shout because he could barely hear himself. How did he expect a speeding hippogriff to hear him at normal conversational mode? He started leaning this way and that, trying to direct and steer this massive, winged creature. Still...having the time of his life! Up, down, side to side and if he wasn't careful, Ian would be looking up at the backside of a flying hippogriff. He tightened his grip and continued coaxing Ruffles forward.

"Once you've managed to swing one leg over them after climbing up, press your whole torso against them while they rise up." Which he then did so. It was a little startling at the speed they rose up, but not enough to showcase on Javier's face. Waiting until enough have followed example, "Up ahead is a marked finish line, but of course some obstacles. You can choose to ride and jump over the logs up ahead without taking off into the air or should you fly them and have a challenge with keeping them on course and away from any delicious looking birds."

Now why should they participate in the race? "The first three to cross the finish line will earn some extra points." Sounds nice doesn't it? "To have them take off in the air, just lightly click your two feet against it's hind. It might make a noise, but will take off. When you want to land, pressing your body against it long enough will have it lower. From then on just like on the ground, constant praising after directing them will suffice. To have them run off but stay on the ground, patting the backhind near the tail will do it." Now were they ready? "Annnnnd... Go!" Because he was as he lightly clicked the sides of his feet onto the Hippogriff making it squawk at a certain volume before taking a few steps before flying into the air. "See you all at the finish line."

---
As instructed, it's now a race to the end. You can either ride your Hippogriff on land or in the air. Both will have their challenges from directing to avoiding distracting animals and objects.

- Race your Hippogriff to the finish line. -
+ If staying on the ground: Patting the backhind will send them off. There are logs and worms on the ground, which they will happily enjoy unless persuaded well enough to move on.
+ If flying in the air: Clicking feet against the hind will send them off. There are trees branches and birds on the ground, which they will happily enjoy unless persuaded well enough to move on.
+ If had already been partnered with someone: Alternate the commands and directions.
+ Use consistent commands and praises to direct them along as they may veer elsewhere.
+ Press body against them to stop and/or land them.

Time go to racing! This was the activity Kace was waiting for! He was jumping on the balls of feet with his excitement. Now he needed to jump onto Charlene. He was going to do it right away, he was gonna do it slowly and tell her. "Alright girl I am gonna go up on you now..." he patted her lightly. She nodded and understood. Kace took that as a yes and he put one leg over her and pressed his whole torso onto her while Charlene was rising up. He saw the obstacles the professor mentioned and he could fly over them or go over the logs. We shall see what Charlene wanted to do. Alright so to take off he needed to pat her on the behind and then they will fly. "Alright girl you ready to fly.." he leaned over and asked her. She squawked and he took that as a yes!

He put his hand on her behind and he patted it and instructed her, "Alright girl let's go fly.." he told her but she was eating the worms on the ground. She must be hungry so he didn't blame her. She was ignoring him so he needed another tatic. "Hmm I promise to let you eat afterwards.." he told her honestly. She heard it and he patted her behind and she began to run and take off.

Angel was worried, very worried, she didn't really know what the Hippogriff would be like to race. "Benny will it be alright?" Angel suddenly asked. "They don't go crazy when they race right?" Angel hoped not.

Angel managed to lead their hippogriff out of the closed off area they were in with not much trouble, Benny walking alongside of them and occasionally offering encouragement and friendly pats on the shoulder to the creature. Eventually they were with the others on open ground, all of their charges milling around with their new companions awaiting what was next for the class. They didn't have to linger long as Professor Thompson asked for all their attention once more, explaining the guidelines of the activity and the instructions to best handle their new rides.

Once again Angel was nervous and the fourth year reached to take her hand almost without thinking and giving it a reassuring squeeze. "Yeah it will," he assured her," there were hippogriff rides at the prefect event." Surely they were well behaving hippogriffs that the professor and the rest of the staff by extension trusted not to cause harm or damage.

Watching what the professor had done to get his hippogriff to kneel, Benny followed suit. Stroke...stroke here. Ruffle...ruffle there. A comforting squack was his first reaction and after a few more strokes the creature finally bowed down and and kneeled on its forelegs. The action lowered him closer to the ground so he and Angel could get on. "Thank you...um..." he really should have a name since Benny heard some of the others had at least nicknamed their hippogriffs. "Thank you Toothless." Granted it was the name of a fictional dragon but it still seemed to work.

Turning back to Angel, he offered both his arms and hands to her. "If you trust me, I can help raise you up and onto him." Probably would be easier that way given her shorter height. "Then I'll get on behind you."

Post 4...AHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Things were going good. That should have been an indication. Ian had just narrowly missed the one branch when Ruffles decided it was time to go UP. Ian was rather unprepared for this sudden development as he felt his grip slipping from the front of the wings. He started crying out. WWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE! NOT UP....GO STRAIGHT!!!!!!!! Not exactly the most graceful of flights now as the hippogriff seemed to be enjoying itself. Ian didn't know if Ruffles was hunting any warmer air levels for a nice round of gliding or if it felt the need to dislodge itself of the parasitic hitchhiker on it's back. Either way, Ian was holding on for dear life as he saw the upper reaches of the trees swoosh by. Ian made the rather dreadful mistake of looking down. The ground was being separated from Ian in rather dramatic fashion. Ian began to panic when he felt Ruffles began to even out his flight path and they were drifting through the air. Ruffles had his wings extended and looked back at Ian before quickly returning it's gaze forward. This was an unfortunate turn of events. How would Ian get down? How would he coax this magnificent (evil and murderous) creature to a safer flight distance. Ian looked about him as he noticed how tiny the other students appeared from this height. He decided to enjoy his flight for a bit as he looked around him at the fantastic view from WAY UP HERE!

It was time to race! Lux was excited and happy that Professor Thompson had set things up so people who didn't want to fly could still participate. She didn't care if she was the only one staying on the ground, there was no way her Hippogriff's feet were going to leave the ground for this race.

Watching the Professor with Henry, she gave Mr. Hippogriff head strokes and pats until the creature took her hint and bent forward. "Good job!" she said to him as soon as she had managed to climb on his back. Pressing her whole torso against him, she felt him straighten out again and gave him some head rubs. "Let's have some fun racing!" The competitive person in her wanted to win, but she wasn't the first person out of the gate so it was highly unlikely to happen.

"And off we go!" she called out happily as she patted him on the backhand right near his tail.

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

First things first, then, climbing aboard.

Except... Toby was pretty sure this was going to easily be the most difficult part. He eyed the tall tall hippogriff and sort of stood there for a moment while a bunch of other students got up on their hippogriffs and headed off. It didn't really matter to Toby, trying to win the race. Though he wouldn't say it out loud, Toby actually really disliked races. Or, well, any kind of competition, which might have been strange given what his whole life ambition was. In any case, he let everyone else get on with charging ahead.

"Okay Monty, I'm gonna climb up on your back, and we're gonna go for a fly, yeah?" the Hufflepuff addressed his hippogriff friend, giving the creature a pat to coax it into kneeling for him. Maybe it had just KNEW what was going on, or had possibly understood Toby's words, or most likely had seen the other hippogriffs allow students to climb aboard and therefore knew what was coming, but Monty immediately lowered down for Toby.

Still so big though, and Toby was still so tired, and getting more tired as the minutes ticked on so that climbing up seemed like a monumental task. But, after giving Monty another feather ruffle and a murmur of thanks, he moved back and started trying.

First, Toby tried in the way that he'd seen everyone else get up. Just sort of reaching up and over the back/neck and jumping whilst trying to swing his leg over. Though short, Toby was still tall enough (and bouncy enough) to have managed this on one of his better days, but today it didn't seem to be working out so well. At one point, he seemed to almost manage it, getting a foot aaaaaaaaaalmost over... at which point he inexplicable let go of the hold he had on Monty's neck, resulting in the Hufflepuff falling straight back and sprawling onto the grass.

Well then.

Monty, still kneeling, looked around at him and gave a sort of squawk of what was probably judgement; if the hippogriff was human Tobias was certain there would be eyebrow quirking. Toby nodded at the creature as he climbed back to his feet to give it another go.

"Yeah, yeah, I know."

Post 5...safely on terra firma

Ian got kind of tired as the wind up at that height and decided to lean against Ruffles to rest. As he felt his chest against the strong back of this fine hippogriff, he felt it's head dip down and head lower. Apparently, leaning against the hippogriff got it to descend. This time however, the descent was slow and lazy. Apparently, Ruffles was enjoying the flight. Ian looked over the neck, feeling the feathers tickle his cheeck and saw the ground approaching. It was a good thing too, since Ian wasn't exactly dressed for high level flying what with a tshirt and shorts.

Ian noticed that Ruffles was not heading back for the course, but was headed back to the pasture. That was fine by Ian because he wasn't exactly sure, but he figured there were already 3 people back with their hippogriffs. As Ruffles hooves hit the ground, Ian sat back up and felt the gentle gait of his hippogriff carry them back toward the pasture. When the hippogriff had come to a stop, Ian slid off of Ruffles and reached up to give him a good scratch behind the ear hole. It had been great. Good Job Ruffles! That was extraordinary and I'm grateful you didn't toss me off to my near certain doom. Ian reached down and grabbed the brush again and began to brush out the feathers he had leaned against, waiting for the professor to return.
Turning back to Angel, he offered both his arms and hands to her. "If you trust me, I can help raise you up and onto him." Probably would be easier that way given her shorter height. "Then I'll get on behind you."
Angel smiled as Benny squeezed her hand and then called the Hippogriff toothless. "That's an awesome name Benny." Angel loved the name. "I might call one of my plants that one day, just for you." Angel thought it would be cool, but she'd see if Benny liked it later, she was already thinking of naming her next plant after him.

Angel then listed to him. "I trust you... you know I do." Angel smiled as she started to get onto the Hippogriff with the help of Benny, she just hoped he was right behind her because she didn't want to fly this thing on her own... she wanted him there with her.
