Layla was at the lesson and she wasn't entirely sure why. She hadn't enjoyed this subject at all and she wasn't the most attentive person when it came to animals anyway, or creatures. Whatever. She liked them. Her cat got her attention and was well looked after but she'd never go out of her way to specifically look after a creature if there was no need to. She was stood away from the large group of students arms crossed against her chest as the Professor spoke, eyes trained on the Hippogriff in the pen.

Weird thing it was. A concoction of other species and it looked entirely unnatural. She sighed as she waited her turn to approach it. Or them. Before she knew it there were numerous of the creatures. Upon a gap opening the Ravenclaw decided she had better grasp the opportunity before it was too late. She wasn't good with horses, she didn't fear them or anything she had just fallen off as a kid and hadn't felt any need to go near one since. Bit of a girly posh fancy sport anyway, horse riding.

She started walking towards the majestic creature keeping her eyes trained on its beak and making sure not to blink. They didn't like that apparently, or if you turned your back.

Riding Hippogriffs. Her second bout of riding freedom since this year started--since the idiot got Quidditch cancelled with his lousy threat that the Headmistress decided to take seriously. Merlin's beard, she didn't think she'd get over that but it didn't matter, not when she'd be gone in a few months and able to fly wherever the hell she wanted. Her poor broom must have been out of practice by now. She could only imagine how much it missed flying. Without that, it had no purpose.

But right, the task at hand was approaching the Hippogriffs. It wasn't so hard really, not with all the practice she'd been getting in lately. Was Dot in this class? She'd shown her how to do it right, so she wouldn't get herself eaten or something.

With the hippogriff she'd chosen in mind, Lex began a cautious approach, stopping at a far enough distance to keep the thing from feeling she'd suddenly broken the hippogriff code of conduct and invade its space. Sensitive things they were and this class wouldn't end with broken bones. Only Quidditch was meant to end like that.

Was this far enough? She noted the creature fix its gaze on her and she began hoping so.

This class was awesome, because Lux got to spend time with the Hippogriffs outside instead of in a classroom. she could still remember meeting Henry last term, and he was a sweetheart who had let her pet him. Now she would get another chance, though the prospect of riding one was terrifying. Professor Thompson wouldn't deduct her points if she refused, right? Because there was definitely a difference between climbing a rock wall with her boyfriend's assistance and letting a creature soar into the air with her on its back.

Selecting her Hippogriff, she waited for her turn to address him.

And so began the staring match between the Gryffindor and the creature. There really wasn't much in the way of winning so much as...not failing to get the Hippogriff to accept that you'd be approaching it soon. Now that she'd gotten its attention, she could effectively communicate this. Lex bowed, as was required but kept her unblinking eyes fixed on it. Look away for even a second and it might get the wrong idea.

One thing was for sure though, it needed to remember that her eyes would be needing moisture soon so this having her stand here all bowed like this and staring...it wouldn't be able to work for very long.

Don't blink. Don't blink. Don't blink.

She noted the way it watched her. Not so much with disdain but more...curiosity if she had to guess. This was a good sign yeah? She wouldn't be forced to back up and give it another shot later? Merlin that better had not been the case because she'd already invested a lot of time standing bent right here and didn't think she'd have been willing to start over.

Well? Could she approach or not?

Right foot, left foot. AJ did this pattern over and over until she finally made her way over to the Hippogriff she deemed as hers. You see, it took her so long because she was being extra sure that she was being slow enough. She didn't wanna go around disrespecting hippogriffs. It was just bad manners.

Eye contact was next. The hippogriff was looking at her, and she was looking at him. The hardest part ever was coming up... not blinking. Do you know how bad you want to blink when you can't? Her eyes were starting to water, and she hadn't even bowed yet.

Finally, AJ leaned her torso over while still keeping the eye contact strong. This was hard. She was beginning to think that the hippogriffs like to see her suffer. What would happen if she just so happened to blink? Would the hippogriff run her down? Would he think badly of her? Answers, she wanted them.

Just when her eyes were going to give up, she watched the creature bend it's neck and lower it's upper torso in such a way that you could be certain it was a proper bow. A bow! Well thank Merlin! Her back would start aching soon she was sure of that and her eyes were in danger of permanently drying out. Very few successes could compare to getting the approval of a Hippogriff. They always seemed so picky right up until the point they bowed back.

Lex allowed herself a smile as she approached and offered the Hippogriff a neck rub. That was for not like...mauling her earlier when she was really vulnerable. Wouldn't that have been something? Jeez.

Mission accomplished, so now the only question was when they mounted them and how soon they'd be able to get into the sky. Very important stuff right there considering everything. No one wanted to be that one eager Gryffindor that did everything too quickly and got what was coming to 'em. Circe, Lex hadn't been that Gryffindor for years.

Who would continue that once she was gone?

*Gasp!* ALL THE HIPPOGRIFFS!!!

The seventh year Hufflepuff stared in awe at the creatures landing where the professor summoned them. COOLCOOLCOOL. He did have to have a cool head though. Once false move and Hippogriff was sure to attack.

Choosing to address the third Hippogriff that landed, he quickly blinked a few times to himself to moisten his eyeballs. Didn't want to take the risk to blink when approaching the creature, did he? Nooooo.

"Hello Miss Cambridge." Nodding curtly at the Head Girl.

"Hello, Mr. Atreyu." He could just make out what he was saying from the distance, luckily.

"Mr. Whitlock." Yes, he did return that particular nod. It was polite after all.

Either he slept in or had made quite the unique choice in attire. "Hello.. Mr. Tempus." Much more relieving now.

"Hello, Miss Andrews."

"Miss Guidry, good day to you."

Returning the wave, "Hello Mr. Lecium. In due time you all will."

"A good day to you too, Miss McGee."

Clearly 'enthusiastic' didn't cover enough of this one's excitement. Smiling a little as he returned the greeting, "Indeed, Mr. Adair."

"Hello Mr. Tinker." Someone was particular bright in their attire.

After returning each curt nods and small waves, there seemed to now be enough students. So it was about time to get started as the Professor's brushing gradually ceased with Henry. "Good day, everyone. It's quite lovely out here again today, so as promised, we're going to be spending time with the Hippogriffs. Grooming and then riding them." Much more freedom than in the classroom, in Javier's opinion. "Despite what it may appear to you all, Henry here isn't the only Hippogriff we have now." Taking his wand out, with quite a few simple pointing motions in mid-air. One hippogriff appeared, then two, then three, and so on and so forth.

"Now then before we really begin you'll need to approach one carefully." Those who attended last year's class and the event would definitely remember this. But for reminders sake, "Keeping your distance with one, once you have his attention you are to not blink and slowly bow, waiting until the Hippogriff returns your bow before you're able to go up to stand near and pet them."

----
As stated you are to approach a Hippogriff. This should take three labeled posts, whether your character blinks or not. Next post will be tomorrow. =)

Benny had registered Angel's appearance beside him, simply smiling softly as her since the professor had just spoke up to bring the class to its beginning. He then turned his full attention to Thompson and listened as the man explained what they would be doing for the lesson. Interacting with the hippogriff...oh wait...hippogriffs plural. The other creatures coming into focus as the professor drew attention to them.

Awesome.

About to start his own approach, the fourth year turned back to his girlfriend as she expressed her feelings to him. "Just follow my lead and make sure to make no sudden movements or be too loud," he instructed in hopes it would ease at least some of her worry, The most important thing was just as he said, for if someone startled the hippogriffs then there would be trouble to be had.

With that in mind, Ben ever so lightly headed off to one of the nearest hippogriffs watchful of what reactions he got from the magical creature so he could best react in turn.

Post 1- Advancing towards the Griff

Grooming them and then riding them?

Adi could NOT stop grinning. Oh no...wait. He grinned practically all the time. Let's just say that he didn't think he would stop grinning once in this lesson. He got to ride a Hippogriff twice in one school year! Woot!

Wasting no time, Adi pulled himself together. His selected Hippogriff, a grey feathered one with spots of black, might think he was overly excited or something. Truth be told, he was over excited but who wouldn't be when a Hippogriff was around?

Anyway, Adi slowly began to advance towards Mr Grey Feathers.

Slowly...

Slowly...

Slowly...

Tobias held the gaze of the hippogriff and at first stood very still. He remained like this for a few moments, like some kind of bizarre staring contest with the great animal, but figured that if he simply stared down the hippogriff for too long without bowing then that could end badly too. He was just... letting the creature become accustomed to him, let it understand that he was about to request to come closer.

Finally, Toby bent at the waist and sunk into a low bow, keeping that unblinking eye contact the whole time, and held the position, waiting. His eyes were beginning to feel very dry, and he wanted very much to start blinking already, but willpower won and Tobias kept them open.

Nothing happened at first. The hippogriff simply stared right back at Toby, whose eyes were beginning to sting and water. The Hufflepuff wondered if perhaps he should back away soon, but just as the thought sprang to his mind, the hippogriff ahead of him bent its front legs and slowly dipped into a bow of its own.

Post 2- taking a bow.

If only My Grey Feathers would stop glaring at him, it would be very much awesome, thank ya very much. Adi halted, surveying the Griff and it seemed to be doing the same thing right back at him. Hmph.

The Hufflepuff took a deep breath before continuing on his slow journey. Mr Grey Feathers's orange eyes followed the boy all the way...until Adi was standing in front of him but yet at a safe distance.

It was now or never. Careful to maintain eye contact (and to keep himself calm), the boy sank into a low bow. Laughing brown eyes stared into fierce orange ones and the wait was ON!

Hippogriff?

Wait, Hippogriffs?! Hehehehe. Coolio! This should be fun, because he missed the opportunity to ride a Hippogriff during the Prefect's Event. You know, keeping an eye on everyone? Honestly though, his mind was somewhere else during that time, so maybe he wasn't really watching...

Without further ado, Ethan breathed in and out slowly, calming his nerves as he reviewed the lesson from last term in his head. Approach the beast, keep a decent distance from it, wait for it to get its attention, no blinking while bowing...and hope for the best: Wait until the Hippogriff bows back.

Ethan approached the hippogriff next to Henry, and stood a few meters away from it. Why? He doesn't know the name of the beast and vise-versa. What if it's a picky one? Ethan contemplated on the thought, and waited for the Beast to look at him.

Post 3- petting the Griff.

Don't blink, don't blink, don't blink...

It was the mantra Adi was repeating in his head as his slowly watering eyes continued to gaze into Mr Grey Feathers's. Things were looking bad though...the Griff didn't seem to want to relent and bend its scaly knees.

"Best start retreating, Adi,''
a voice in his head said.

"No thanks. I think I'll stay a little while longer.''
Hehe. Wasn't he a stubborn guy? Eyes watering every more, he continued to look at the Griff's eyes until...

Mr Grey Feathers FINALLLLLY decided to return the bow. Whew! What a relief. Stuborness does pay off sometimes. Adi straightened himself as he wiped his eyes. Ugh. Noooo, he hadn't been crying because his Hippogriff had been giving him a hard time about bowing.

Adi went forward, grin now back in place to pet the Griff. "Hello, hello.'' Pet, pet. "Do you mind if I call you Grey Feathers?'' Pet, pet. The Griff reared its head slightly. The Puff couldn't figure out if that meant 'yes' or 'no'. Ah well.

"I'm Adi, by the way."
Best get intros out of the way.

After looking over his notes Kace had a clear idea of what to do with the Hippogriff. He nodded and remained calm. He walked over to his hippogriff that caught his eye. He had hazel eyes and brown feathers. He waved to him and stood in front of him a respectable distance. He didn't blink too much because it showed nervousness. Then he bowed his head and kept looking at the ground for about 3 seconds he even counted in his head and made eye contact. He could not blink.

1....2......3

He still looked up and noticed the Hippogriff was hesitant. He was looking at him like he would attack but then he bowed! He smiled and walked over to pet him. He was glad it worked out so well!

When it was her turn, Lux slowly moved a little closer while still keeping a safe distance. She made sure that the Hippogriff was looking right at her, and refused to blink. This was going to make her eyes hurt soon if it didn't work.

Why was he staring at her like she had made him mad?

Slowly she bowed while making sure not to break eye contact; she knew that breaking it for even a moment was a bad idea. Her eyes were beginning to hurt but she still kept them open, waiting for him to respond to her in some way.

Benny continued his slow walk to the more golden brown of the hippogriffs near him, gingerly stopping a safe distance away. He concentrated, doing his best not to blink while he looked at the creature. So far so good. Now he had to move onto the next step, the sign of respect to the majestic beast. Two creatures bowing to each other with the human going first. In this case...the Gryffindor himself and possibly Angel if she indeed followed suit. Ben couldn't bring himself to turn around and look to see if she was.

Taking a deep breath, he slowly brought his upper body into a bow, lowering his head with the movement. All the while still working to keep eye contact. Now in place, the fourth year had to wait for the tell-tale sign that the hippogriff itself was answering back to him. Sort of accepting his invitation to further interact with him or her. Whichever case it may be with his target audience.

I am a nice friendly boy, he mused to himself in his head as he watched and waited.

After what seemed like forever - though it was mere moments - the Hippogriff returned the bow. Awesome. Now she could approach him AND blink.

Beaming, she walked up to him. "Hey there, Mr. Hippogriff. You are so pretty." She started to gently pet his feathers which he seemed to like. "I'm Lux," she said to him as she gently patted his beak. Hippogriffs were such lovely animals and she wished she could spend more time with them. So long as riding wasn't involved, she would so be up for it.

Hippogriffs!

Woo this was going to be so much fun and exciting. She never been this close to one before. She had seen them but only from far away. Although she did know what she needed to do to approach one. She took a breath. Don't get too excited.

She slowly walked up. Maintaining contract and not blinking as she moved closer to the Hippogriff. It was just her and the Hippogriff they were the only two. Don't blink. Don't blink. Move slowly to it. She had to keep reminding herself of these things. BIG one here DONT FREAK OUT.

She was cool, no freaking out.

Toby let out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding as he straightened back up again and stepped forwards, blinking a couple of times at last. The hippogriff came out of the bow too, eyeing him curiously. Toby simply kept his steps sure and confident, though not over confident, as he didn't want to come across as rude or whatever. It was kind of like how they had to get the balance right when approaching those bouncing bulbs in Herbology.

And then he was right beside the hippogriff and reaching up to stroke its feathers, smiling at how wonderful and soft they felt. Tobias rest his hand up on the creatures neck and just held it there for a moment, as its face leaned closer to inspect him.

"Hi," the Hufflepuff said softly. "I'm Toby." He looked around at the rest of the class and at Thompson, just to make sure everyone else was busy with what they were doing. Okay, cool, so it was just him and his hippogriff sharing a moment. That would do just nicely. Toby turned back to it again and met the gaze of those orange eyes once more. "You can be my friend if you want. I'd like it very much if you were." He pet the feathers some more, and even held out a hand so the hippogriff could inspect it, before touching that awesome beak too.

And then, just like every other time he was with an animal, Toby started quietly chatting away to it, telling the hippogriff all sorts of things and feeling his mood lift as he did so. The hippogriff didn't seem to mind, and definitely appeared to appreciate the feather petting.

#1 eye contact

THISWASBEYONDCOOOL! They were going to RIDE them!!!! REALLY?!!?! Zeke was mentally flailing, a ball of excitement just waiting to BURST.

Even just watching the Professor summon the other hippogriffs got him excited, SO excited that he might have been bouncing on the balls of his feet rather rapidly. THAT, would have to stop if he didn't want to be attacked.

After being instructed on the process, Zeke prepared himself to approach one of the beautiful beasts. He looked about himself, and then looked toward the Hippogriffs, picking one out that seemed to be looking his way. The beasts sleek grey-brown mottled feathers were pretty, and it didn't look particularly murderous.

He didn't blink.

He STARED at the Hipporgriff with awe. Was it.... was it looking at HIM?

...

Could he bow now???

Zeke maintained eye contact for a moment longer - just to be sure they'd made that connection and that the beast wasn't looking at the dude/chick over his shoulder or something.

"Same. I'm pretty sure I want to go to Uni with something to do with....creatures." She blushed a bit and smiled. It was a little early for her to start thinking--BUT. It was better to have some sort of idea than nothing, right? "I actually want to work with kneazles--" it made her laugh but THEN Professor Thompson started talking so she shushed herself and turned to look towards him. She was ASSUMING--with reason--that the class miiiiight have something to with hippogriffs? Yeah?

Uni, huh? Woah. That'd be pretty awesome to go to uni and learn about creatures and do cool things with that! Except, how old was she again!? Uni seemed so far away, out of reach, but maybe that's because he still had a little over 2 years of Hogwarts left to go. But huh, what was HE going to do about uni??? And before Zander could even ask anything else about her uni thing-- because he was actually quite interested believe it or not-- Professor Thompson was starting to adress the whole class.

Awh.

Well maybe he could ask Eden about it later or something. He had to know these things, for future you know?

A little too excited BUT riding hippogriffs in class?! A DREAM COME TRUE! And Henry wasn't the only one?! It wasn't like the disillusionment charm was anything new when it came to hiding Hippogriffs and all, but Zander still couldn't help but look absolutely amazed when the Professor unveiled them all!! Okay, horrible year or not, this was going to be awesome! Come to think of it, this was probably just his happiness finally breaking through after being stuffed up for so long. He fiiiinnnaaallllyyy has a release!! It was perfect. Yep.

She'd take turns with him, of course. "YOu just...bow and NOT blink right--" Well Professor Thompson had JUST said that but STILL. Eden had to make sure and stuff.

So when Eden asked about working together, Zander smiled all big at her. He LOVED creatures and she loved creatures, so yeah! And hopefully that meant she was pretty good with them too because Zander wasn't really sure how far his abilities went. Ahem. But, he always gave it his all if that counted for anything? "Yeah, uh, OKAY!" he nodded enthusiastically as he looked around for an available hippogriff. They needed one that looked relatively friendly, okay? He turned his attention back to the Ravenclaw as she spoke again. "Yeah, you have to be really reeeaaalllyyy still. And let them make the first move," it was Hippogriff manners. He had learned that in the other lesson.

Anyways, he turned back to look for a hippogriff again and smiled when he spotted one that nobody had gotten to. Hopefully it'd be friendly?? Because really.... he couldn't actually tell. How come they didn't smile to let you know? "You wanna go to that one?" he asked as he pointed at it.

#2 bowing and starting to approach

And it was official, he was in a staring contest with a Hippogriff!!! HIS Hippogriff!!! (Cause he was totes going to claim it was his once he established a BOND with it). Heheehehhee.

Conscious of the fact that he didn't want to unsettle the Hipporgriff, Zeke bent slowly at the waist into a bow. Please bow back! Please bow back! Please bow back! Zeke held his breath, making sure to show he was being SUPER respectful to the beast.

....

.....

He was beginning to think that the Hippogriff wasn't going to return his gesture of friendship, but then, IT DIDDDDD!!!!!! IT BOWED! AT HIM!

Zeke beamed and straightened up, taking carefully paced steps toward it. Was it a boy or a girl? How could you tell???

Post 1 - Picking a Hippogriff/Question for the Professor :)

Hippogriffs!

The small girl was in complete excite when the Professor announced that not only would they get to brush and pet one but also ride it! She had almost ridden one at the Fireworks Festival but sadly they had run out of time. Hady had been slightly disappointed that day but it's alright now cause this was so going to make up for that!

She remembered being told what had to be done and she'd also watched Alexa with one at the festival. Having that experience she felt a bit more confidant with what had to be done today. So as the Professor made more and more Hippogriffs appear around them she choose one instantly. A rather large one with beautiful sleek tan feathers a mix of dark speckled spots blended in. He was gorgeous.

Now that she had one picked out she took her first step forward. "Professor, does this one have a name?" Hady asked softly though loudly enough to be heard without frightening any of the Hippogriffs.

Professor Thompson had returned her greeting, which was all Brooklyn had needed to know that her carefully enacted plan was still working. He still liked her, but he’d very quickly moved on to discussing the lesson. Hippogriffs, obviously. She hadn’t figured there would have been one…no, several hippogriffs at the lesson if they were studying something else. She’d listened, either way, even if she had already felt like she knew how to handle the creature. Everyone knew about the eye contact and bowing. It was the respect thing she’d already thought about, so it had appeared almost as if she wasn’t paying attention until they’d been released to approach the hippogriffs.

Everyone else had chosen theirs, leaving her less options. That didn’t matter to her. No matter what, whichever one she chose was going to be the best, and she just turned to face the nearest hippogriff. Eye contact wasn’t a problem. Almost as soon as she’d turned, her blue eyes had met the golden ones of the creature and she’d used every ounce of her superiority to keep staring. Blinking wasn’t allowed, even if she was supposed to be showing respect. She wanted the hippogriff to respect her too, yet after a few moments of staring, she’d started to bend forward into a bow, her head tilted to keep eye contact. Besides, she wouldn’t have been able to see if it bowed back if she was looking at the ground.

#making friends

His approach was reasonable, he thought, because if he had it his way, he'd have RUUUUN to the Hippogriff and jumped straight onto its back. But nooooooo, he'd walked slowly enough and still paused just a metre in front of the Hippogriff. Did it have a name? Was it a boy or a girl? It looked like a girl... only because the word that came to mind was PRETTY.

"Hey, I'm Zeke," he introduced himself to the beast, or beastess. He held out a closed fist for it to sniff if it wanted to, and he waited until the beast gave him another sign that contact was okay. When it inched closer and nudged his hand with its beak, he took it as a sign to mean they were cool-bean-friends. "You're super pretty," he complimented it, as he had a go at stoking the beasts beak... and then moved to the feathers on its neck. SUPER pretty. He liked the beasts eyes too. They were warm and almost golden looking.
