It is unlikely anyone knows what to expect upon entering the Arithmancy classroom today - even the new professor! The outrageous circumstances of the previous professor's exit are surely on everyone's mind, but Professor Tanner hopes to make a fresh start. Though she has had little time to prepare for her new role, she certainly is enthusiastic.
Not much can be gleaned of the content for today's lesson by simply looking around. The board has only five words scrawled across it: Arithmancy Lesson Two, Professor Tanner. Said professor is standing behind a small podium that has a few pieces of paper packed with notes. Come on in and take a seat!

Oops. Well, she'd figured she was wrong, but she hadn’t wanted to repeat answers but also wanted to participate, so......
Loud people being loud, Merlin! Heather had rub her ear a little after that one Slytherin girl gave her answer, since she was so loud that her voice had echoed. Anyway, she took a look at the photos annnnnd.......didn't recognize anyone. Except.......was that......? Hmm. Definitely looked like other pictures she'd seen of him. "Number five is Napoleon, I think?" Yeah, she still wasn't quite sure. It would make sense, though, with the Master Number of ninety-nine.

Zhenya felt quite relieved that her answer was correct. Her theory also proved to be right, but, then, how was number 16 a Master number as well? She frowned a little as she thought about it, but still wrote it down on her parchment. Maybe she would double check that one later.
She looked at all of the photos of the muggles. She squinted at them, trying to see if any of them looked familiar. She thought to herself that her parents were never the people who really told her about people from the past, unless they were magical folk. But the fourth one, that looked familiar. She just couldn't place it. She had a crown on, so Zhenya thought she was probably one of those Royal folks. She couldn't put a name to the face though, but she vaguely remembered some names. She raised her hand and said hesitantly, "Er Professor, the muggle on number four, is that the Duchess of… Cornwall? I mean, no, sorry, the Duchess of Cambridge? Er… what's her name… K-Kar… Kr… Ke… Oh, I'm sorry I don't know her name. I think it starts with the letter K though." She felt a bit flustered. She should have thought it more thoroughly before she raised her hand.

Okay, seriously, who in Merlin's beard were these people and how did everyone else seem to know them? Like what even? Lex blinked at the pictures being shown, trying to recognize maybe one defining detail that would make everything evident but no amount of squinting would fill in the blanks for her so after awhile she simply sat back in her seat and let the others have a go at it--clearly they knew more about these people than she did.
You'd think the names would have sounded familiar too, but that was a complete negative as she'd come to accept.
Was there a point in taking down the names if she didn't have the pictures to stick on her parchment alongside them? Probably not. She'd just...try committing them to memory and hope that nothing of the sort would actually make an appearance on her NEWTs.
Wouldn't that be depressing?

... Was she laughing at him? How come everyone always did that! It was actually a pretty reasonable guess with plenty of thought and imagination. Actually he really did pull it out of thin air, but no one had to know that. Either way, how did everyone else seem to know everything about these random Master Numbers anyways! Maybe some people were just naturally good at Arithmancy? And this time, Zander was the one who laughed. Because pft, impossible.

But as for the pictures? He just stared for a bit. He didn't know any of these people and he was even muggleborn!! He looked vaguely familiar. And was that a..... American flag behind him?
"I think I've seen number three in a movie or something.... OR maybe an American crime drama or something," not that he watched any of those. Just commercials were a thing and advertisements too. Or maybe he had seen that face in a history book somewhere... Weird. Either way he was American and Zander didn't know many of those, so he just sat and waited for another explanation.

She ticked off the numbers on her fingers as she began to speak. "I heard 44, 55, 66, 88, and 99 as correct answers. The last one, which I don't believe I heard from anyone, is 77." She flicked her wand and the board changed accordingly.

"I found some pictures of famous Muggles and used an Engorgement Charm. Wingardium Leviosa!" The pictures took off and began floating around the room, weaving their ways in amongst the students. "Any guesses as to the identities of these people?"
Zeke stared. HOW COULD SHE NOT KNOW ABOUT THE NUMBER PEOPLE?! They were only like, obsessed with it. But then again, she wasn't a numbers person, techinically... she was a flying person, and he kinda wished they were doing THAT right now instead of this. Why had he come again? And the thought of doing EXTRA work was not sitting well with him... only, she said points. POINTS!... Professor Airey wanted him to earn more of those, said he had to be top of the school, and THIS little Lion liked a challenge.
"I can do that for you, Professor," he nodded, cause hello!!! WHO would say no to more points? No one EVER!
It was a shame though, that thirteen wasn't a master number, he was so sure that it was. Inking his quill, Zeke slowly started to copy down the additional notes from the board, looking up occasionally as the Professor lady continued to speak.
People? Muggle people? ............ Didn't she know he flunked History class in muggle school???
He had NO idea, though admittedly, some of the names sounded familiar. Like, that Churchill guy, he did things in the war right? The second big one.
Angel knew all of them except 5, that was the good thing about your dad being a tourist guide and herself being muggleborn. She was sure her dad had told her who this one was but she couldn't remember so she just came up with an out of the box answer. She raised her hand "Is number 5 William Pitt Younger?" Angel decided to explain more about the guy. "He was the youngest Prime Minister in British History."

So her answer was wrong. Well, Jasmine had taken a shot at it anyway. She began to write down all of the Master numbers and the details about them. She was just finishing up when Professor Tanner presented some pictures for identification. Some of them were familiar to Jasmine and some weren't. Of course recognized Fred Astaire. She was a dancer after all and besides, she had seen many a Fred Astaire movie with her mom. That was not the answer that she would give though.
Raising her hand, Jasmine said, "Number three is Barack Obama" She was a dancer, yes, but she was also an Amercan who knew her history. "He was President of the United States", and a ground breaking one at that.

Ian noted that he didn't get much of a response other than a defense of the teaching style, which didn't always suit Ian well when being introduced to a subject. He listened as the master numbers were discussed and scribbled furious notes. Now that he was learning about the master numbers, their significance and frequency, he had something to write about.
The pictures floated by and Ian looked at them each. He listened as Zeke, Angel and Jasmine and others provided some responses. It seemed that all of the names were given and Ian knew a few of them. Winston Churchill being the one that stood out to him the most. I just continued to write notes, as the class continued.

He indicated to the woman. "Picture two. She was a talk show host named Oprah Winfrey.'' There. He had said his answer rather confidently.
She gazed over in an attempt to locate the fourth portrait. Ah, there it was. "Oprah Winfrey is correct! She had a very popular television show in the United States around the turn of the century." She nodded approval to both his answer and his overall bearing. He was already taking her advice to heart.

Objects started flying towards them under the Professor's control. Ariel gasped. "It's magic! The Professors all do magic like Ursula." She wasn't sure how to feel about this.
Back to this again. When would they figure out what was going on? "We'll look for Scuttle after class. How about that?" What was she getting herself into? He was right, though, so at least there was that. Tobias quickly jotted down all that stuff from the board, smiling to himself as he heard that the reason he'd thought of as to why they were never really mentioned was actually totally spot on.
Those pictures then. Toby looked up and looked at them all, but his attention was mainly captured by one in particular, and he threw up his hand.
"Number four! That's Princess Diana, from years and years and years ago," he offered confidently this time, eyes big and bright. That was the only one he thought he knew, mainly because he'd heard good things about her from a young age and thought she was super amazing.

There was some of the personality she was used to from Toby! "Yes, the much-loved British royal. And she died almost a century ago now." And yet muggles still talked about her in a good light. That was rare for someone involved in politics. "Miss Burton, I am not quite sure where she was the duchess of, exactly. I would have to look that up. Or better yet, ask Professor Hadley." Muggle Studies was her area of expertise, after all.

Ethan shook his head and took down notes on his parchment. He didn’t know that there were other Master Numbers other than the usual, but he did know that the first three are more important than the rest. Most probably they’d dig deeper on that?
Or maybe not because now, Professor Tanner had posters of different muggle people afloat before them. Ethan noticed that most, if not all of the people shown, have achieved something great in their life time. He wondered if he’ll ever achieve anything in his lifetime. Ethan’s gaze shifted from one poster to another, and the last one caught his attention.
Oh yes, he knows the dude! His mother likes watching old, old movies when she was still alive, and one of them was directed by him! Ethan’s hand shot up in the air…probably missing his seatmate’s face by a millimetre, “That’s Steven Allan Spielberg, professor. He’s an awesome filmmaker.” He particularly loved Schindler’s List. He remembered forcing Mordred to watch it because the main character looked a lot like his dad. Like. Seriously.
She nodded in agreement. "Steven Spielberg is correct. Know any of his movies?" That last bit was open to anyone, not just Ethan. Who were the muggle film enthusiasts in the room?

It just didn't make SENSE that Soph had never heard of them before, AND that everyone else seemed equally as confused. Was Tanner teaching from a different textbook than the rest of them? Merlin.
There were pictures floating around the room now, and Soph immediately recognized one very well - Princess Diana, that was - but then another one caught her eye. She STARED at the man, unblinking and squinting and making SURE it was who she thought it was. She had ONCE seen a picture of a man who looked a lot like that and she THOUGHT it was Cornelius Fudge, an old British Minister for Magic, but she had been WRONG and told that it was some Prime Minister, and if Tanner said these were famous MUGGLES, then... it must have been the Prime Minister guy and not Fudge, right?
With the slightest hesitation, Sophie's hand went up into the air. But then she realized she didn't recall the name just yet - it was a funny one, wasn't it? Something... churchy... Churcher... Churchall... Churchill? WINSTON Churchill, right? Even though she FELT not so confident about it, she recalled how much Tanner had liked enthusiasm last time and announced, "WINSTON CHURCHILL," when called upon, accompanied by a pointing at the picture and a BIG SMILE.
Wasn't it, though? Right?
Tiara was tempted to yell back her response, but decided against it. "Correct! The British Prime Minister for the Muggles during their infamous Second World War. If you don't know when that was, it was going on at the same time as Grindelwald's rise to power. They both mainly ended in 1945." More than they needed, but since it had come up it couldn't hurt to remind them of important world events.

"So I'm still looking for a correct guess on picture number five. Also names of Steven Spielberg movies," she added as an afterthought. "Anyone? Even if you already guessed, that's fine."
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Yay! He had been right. Of course he had been. That woman was super famous even after all these years. But as for picture number five...Adi had no idea whom was depicted there. So he would have a go at the next question. Tanner had not said if she wanted names of movies Spielberg directed or produced so he just raised his hand and gave the first movie that came to his head.
"Jaws, Professor. One of the movies Spielberg directed.'' Adi loved that movie but he had never read the book.
Sophie nodded along eagerly as Tanner elaborated on her answer as if to confirm that the woman was right, even though OBVIOUSLY Tanner was right. Soph was just being a little bit of a suck-up. Heh.
She still didn't really recognize any of the names that the others gave to identify people, except for Princess Diana, but she saw no real point in writing down the names. Wasn't like she could draw pictures of them beside the names to remember who they were, right?
She didn't know anything about the Spielberg guy, so instead she focused her efforts on the one no one had identified yet. Soph squinted a little at the man and at Tanner's hint that they should "think music." She had, at first, thought he looked like a guy from an old history textbook she had looked through as a kid, like the kind of guy that would've fought in some sort of British war, but... that didn't seem to be the case. He DID look familiar, but didn't all those old paintings of white men with their white hair and dressed regally look the same as each other? Soph sure thought so.
But then... she wondered if perhaps she DID recognize this particular one. Maybe... if he was a music guy, she had seen him in one of her piano books where there were often little blurbs of historic musicians worth noting. Closing her eyes, she tried to envision the various pictures and names in those blurbs, and a bunch of vague names came to mind - Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Bach, Mozart, Handel, Brahms... but she couldn't even recall any specific details to help her narrow it down even enough to make a guess.
So she kept quiet and wondered who WOULD know. Were there any musicians present, hm? She bet Tobes' grandma would know.
Tobias had no clue about the question to do with the Steven guy and movies; he'd never been much of a movie watcher, all that stuff required sitting still and focusing and that was... not easy for him. So he didn't answer that question, but he could have a guess at what the fifth picture was, especially after that hint of 'music'. There was one guy from the olden days that always sprang to Toby's mind when people mentioned music, so it was worth a shot to mention him. He raised his hand again.
"Maybe... Mozart?" he offered, before remembering what Tanner had said earlier and trying again. "I mean... Mozart. Yeah." More confidence that time.

Sophie looked like she had some U-No-Poo for breakfast she was squinting so much in concentration. But it was Sophie's boyfriend that arrived at the correct answer first. Well, actually he said it at the same time as Penelope. "Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, to give the full name. Well done, you two."
Tiara glanced over at Agatha, who seemed to be back into full-on daydream mode. Well, at least she was fully engaged for a few minutes. "Alright. You're probably wondering why I chose to show you pictures of these particular muggles." She definitely would have been if she had been a student. "Each of these famous people has a master number somewhere in their numerologic profile. This should not be altogether surprising, since those masters represent a heightened potential in life." It took lots of potential to become globally famous. "It is possible to have a master in your profile and never BE high profile, but amongst those who go far in life, the masters are far more common."
And now for the fun part. "So. We could sit here and practice reducing down numbers to Master Numbers and then interpret that from our textbooks. However, it's a rather nice day outside and I think we can do a bit better than that, don't you?" It was a somewhat rhetorical question, but only somewhat.
"So! Everyone on your feet, grab your notes and follow me!" And without any further explanation she exited the room and set off down the corridor.
OOC: This thread will close in about 24 hours. Go ahead and post your character following Tiara out onto the grounds where the lesson will continue!

Benny wasn't even guessing at the identities of the men that all appeared at the professor's whim. One or more appeared vaguely familiar but nothing clear and his classmates seemed knowledgable enough to supply the answers all on their own with the Gryffindor simply listening to all that was being said. Really? All of them had master numbers in their profiles? That was cool.
Though before he could really dwell on it, they were moving on. Moving on outside to enjoy the weather while continuing the lesson. Ben wasn't going to pritest so he packed up his stuff and slung his bag over his shoulder before following the professor out of the classroom. Fieldtrip!

Ian seemed just a wee bit too slow in answering, but no worries. It appeared they would be departing for a trip outside for this class. Excellent. Ian followed the professor out of the classroom.

This woman was nice. Ariel really liked her and was happy that she would see Scuttle again soon. She missed her old friend.
The thought of magic wasn't as nice, but at least it was GOOD magic and not the kind that Ursula did. Her daddy had magic too, he could do things with his trident. Jumping up at the thought of an adventure, she wondered if they would be going out to look for treasure.
JUST after she was thinking of all the names, Tobes chimed that it was Mozart, and she couldn't help but grin over at him when Tanner confirmed that he was correct. Her smartypants best friend. What a guy.
But... they got to go OUTSIDE? For CLASS? Just like she'd been wishing earlier? Merlin, was Tanner a mind-reader?! Sophie bolted from her chair - she didn't need to be told twice - and hesitated only to grab her class notes and wait for Tobes, wanting him to be beside her the whole way so they could chat.
"Bet your gran would be proud of you for knowing the Mozart one," she murmured to him, beaming away and instinctively linking her arm with his. Even quieter, she added with a mischievous sort of glint in her eye, "Nerd." Hehehehe.
Nice day outside + professor acknowledging the nice day outside + professor leading them out of the classroom... could only mean that they were heading out to the grounds.
Toby blinked as Tanner headed right on out of the room and hurried to gather up his stuff before getting up and out of his seat. Soph was already there and linking arms, and Toby let her, giving her a 'pfft' look when she called him a nerd before heading out the door with her. Being that he was still a little tired and out of it from staying up so late studying and stressing, the Hufflepuff was a little clumsy on his way out of the room, managing to bump into an empty desk on the way out of the room. But shh, he was fine, off they went.

Jasmine listened as the identities of the people in the photographs were revealed. She was trying to think of a Steven Spielberg movies when Professor Tanner explained the connection between the pictures and Arithmancy. Then before she knew it, class was being moved outside. Okaay.
Jasmine gathered her things, stuffed them in her bag and followed the Professor out of the room. Well she couldn't argue with a good excuse to go outside on a beautiful day.

So then...those people all had master numbers somewhere? Well that took the mystery out of the whole thing. Now they wouldn't have to go through that long process of having to work through the calculations, yeah? All the work done, they could go for an early lunch, that sort of thing? Hey, she was game. It was lovely having class today and she would give the Professor's regards to the House Elves when she got down to the kitch--
Oh?
No early end to class, they were heading out? Well, she supposed that was better than staying in here going through numbers too so...Lex collected her piece of parchment, her quill and the bottle of ink then followed the Professor and the others from the room.
No telling where they were going but it was nice April weather now so it didn't really matter. Not staying inside the castle was good enough.

Agatha was definitely one professor Tanner's favourite students now, she could tell. The woman wouldn't stop glancing at her, which probably meant some sort of adoration. The Slytherin took not of that, since it had probably been because of her enthusiastic response to Fred Astaire's picture. Then again, what could one expect after showing such picture to Agatha? That man had been one of the best, most famous dancers of all time.
The girl was about to sigh heavily and go back to staring out the window when those Master Numbers were mentioned again, but the teacher mentioned something about going outside for an activity, and the fourth year perked up, watching the woman leave the room. Once her classmates started putting away their things, Agatha did the same then followed professor Tanner and everybody else out.

Oh. Not Napoleon but someone who was alive he was. Which could be any number of people, really. So, Heather switched gears to thinking of Spielberg movies. There was the one about the shark which someone had said already. And wasn't there one about a friendly alien? What was it again? And one about dinosaurs too. The names escaped her.
But before she could remember the names, they were moving on. Outside. Yay! She grabbed her things and followed the professor, glad that at least one professor knew the value of the outdoors.

WAIT THEY WERE MOVING? And.... not reducing numbers? HEY! Maybe Arithmancy wasn't too bad after all! How come Tanner didn't takeover sooner! This was wonderful! This was great! This was fabulous! This was-- moving really quickly and Zander didn't want to be left behind!
So quickly jumping out of his seat he followed the others to the grounds.
Wait up!!
