It is unlikely anyone knows what to expect upon entering the Arithmancy classroom today - even the new professor! The outrageous circumstances of the previous professor's exit are surely on everyone's mind, but Professor Tanner hopes to make a fresh start. Though she has had little time to prepare for her new role, she certainly is enthusiastic.
Not much can be gleaned of the content for today's lesson by simply looking around. The board has only five words scrawled across it: Arithmancy Lesson Two, Professor Tanner. Said professor is standing behind a small podium that has a few pieces of paper packed with notes. Come on in and take a seat!
Sophie was seated by the windows behind Tobes, which was nothing out of the ordinary, but the Ravenclaw kept staring out the window, her gaze distant and out of focus as she reflected upon Domingo's demise and Tyner - err, Tanner - and her new position. Was the woman qualified to do this? To teach this class? Did she have substantial background in the subject, or did she just know the subject well enough that Truebridge thought it would work out to just let her teach, qualifications or no qualifications?
Sophie didn't know.
But what was the status on Domingo, even? Where was she, hm? Soph didn't care much for the woman - or at all, for that matter - but she couldn't help but linger on the thought of her getting sentenced to Azkaban or something of the sort for a long while. What was the deal? Was the woman's status public knowledge that she had missed out on, or were they all in the dark?
Sophie didn't know this either.
Nor had she even heard what Tanner was saying to them - even as the woman circuited the room, Soph was still distracted by her own thoughts, pondering the fate of Domingo and weighing the likelihood that Truebridge was so desperate to fill the position that she would fill the vacancy with someone unqualified to be teaching the bright young minds of Hogwarts. Was this approved by the Board of Governors? Did they know?

Of course he was here. Psh. He was merely quiet as he looked over at Tanner, confusion and speculation bubbling over in his head. He'd actually liked Domingo, why in the name of Merlin did she have to LEAVE? And he wasn't use to Tanner at all, having never actually met her before. But then there was another question popping up: had Domingo actually sent the chorts out? Jeez. What did she have against the school?!
And he was going to blissfully ignore yet another mention of the OWLs because he was NOT going to have a crisis in here. No. Besides, it was getting to that stage in the year where he was sick and tired of hearing that abbreviation, whether it was from professors or friends or his mother. Just no. Speaking of his mother, boy would she be glad that they had found a replacement professor for Arithmancy.
And the question? Nothing new to add to what the others had said. Unless kebabs were allowed to be mentioned.
Man, he could go for a delicious kebab right about now.

Was this all? She had hoped for a better showing. Nevertheless, it was time for the class to begin, so begin it she would. Tiara surveyed the class and cleared her throat rather loudly. "Good morning, everyone. Thank you for coming."
She had spent awhile thinking about this and decided that it was better to address the elephant in the room and get it behind them. "As should be readily apparent, I am not Professor Domingo." She began to walk a slow circuit around the room as she spoke. "You have probably heard that she is no longer with us. Rather, she is cooperating with the Ministry of Magic in an investigation into the curious happenings with the chorts last year." In her mind the verdict was still out on that, but it certainly was a foregone conclusion for some of her colleagues, especially the Headmistress. "The Headmistress has asked me to fill the void for the rest of the year and I assure you I have every intent of getting you through your O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. examinations at the end of the year."
"I have had very little in the way of notes from Professor Domingo." Most everything left behind by la profesora had been confiscated as evidence by the Ministry. And what was left was mostly in Spanish. "Perhaps some of you could enlighten me as to what you had been covering before I took over?"
Zhenya sat in her chair in the middle of the room listening to what the professor was saying. She was determined to keep her head down and her ears open. She wanted to do well in her OWL's, and her attention perked up a bit when this professor assured her she would get them through the exams. She felt the tension inch away, just a little bit. She was still very tense, and sat there like a statue, hair half covering her face, listening. Once the professor had spoken, briefly of another professor whom Zhenya wasn't even aware of, she was asking the students what they had been covering. Well, Zhenya didn't know. She frowned ever so slightly, trying to think back to the last thing she did that was remotely associated with arithmancy. Zhenya listened to the replies of the other students, taking dot point notes as to what she might have to go back and learn, but she wasn't able to put her hand up and give any information; she quite simply did not have any to give.

..........Gabriel didn't like change, usually...but with a familiar, but new, face in the classroom....his responding emotion was odd. Yes, professor Tanner was a girl...but he'd seen her enough to be completely desensitized...due to Ravenclaw common room reasons. So, good change, this was....The previous woman had loaded them down with ridiculous busy work and had spoken in a shoddy Spanish accent.
She wasn't, um, planning a return after the.....um, cooperation, was she?
He'd wanted to offer that the lady had been rude, too....but Toby, Ian, Ethan....and a girl from his house (Jasmine)....had it under control.
Gabe, instead, busied himself with his notebook; face down and cheeks pink.

Things were still, GOOD... he was hopeful he might actually be able to tolerate numbers this time round. It seemed easier than the muggle algebra stuff at least, so there was plenty of hope to be had.
Of course, there was no point in him putting his hand up and volunteering a response which had already been given, though he very dearly liked to talk. Talking was fun, and it was a good outlet for his brain which just kept whirring whether he was able to communicate all his thoughts or not. At any rate, he nodded vigorously when Life Path numbers was mentioned.
Zeke crossed his arms on his desk, slouching a little in doing so. Hazel eyes were on the teacher lady to see what she'd say next. It was a shame she was teaching THIS and not teaching them to FLY.

So...she wasn't in the wrong place afterall and apparently neither was Professor Tanner. Huh. Interesting but hardly something she'd question. Whatever was happening, it didn't affect her after these last few months ran off and she was gone. This was just....whatever it wanted to be and she wouldn't let herself be weirded out so with a polite smile, she went and took a seat in the middle of the room, the one she usually took actually.
Lex began taking out her parchment and quill while the explanation was offered. Domingo was helping the Ministry? That's not what she'd heard but this was why you didn't listen to the whispers around the castle. Most of the time they weren't accurate, as was proven in the case right now.
Never listen to idiots.
The others seemed to cover what was taught pretty clearly so there was hardly a point in giving input that was already given. Nah, she'd just wait for the actual lesson to begin.

Wait, the new professor knew her name already? And had pronounced it correctly? Awesome!
Cooperating? Word around the castle was that she'd been arrested sometime between the last Arithmancy lesson and this one. Heather would hardly call that cooperating, but whatever. Maybe the rumors were wrong. Either way, it wasn't her problem, but the fact that Domingo hadn't left notes behind seemed to point to the former explanation. Or that Domingo was as careless as her accent was thick. Anyway, Professor Tanner was asking them what they had been studying. Her classmates already had that covered though, so all she had to contribute were nods of agreement. Though, she would add that the male and female numbers thing had not made sense to her. I mean, they were numbers.

The Gryffindor smiled to both Adi and Benny as they came to sit near him, but as soon as he noticed Simon his eyes grew at to least twice their size. If he had only walked in later he could've sat with Simon and Ethan! He did like Adi and Benny, don't get him wrong, but he hadn't had the chance to hang out with Simon in ages!! It didn't help that they were both in houses at the opposite ends of the school. Dungeons and Towers didn't really go well together, which ended up in little chance of bumping into each other within the castle.
Sigh.
But anyways, enough of that. The Gyrffindor turned his attention back to the new Professor. Wait a minute!! They thought Domingo was the head of the cold one attack?! They clearly had the wrong woman. Domingo was harmless!! Sure her accent was hard to understand sometimes, but.... It could've been a different Professor HINT HINT.
Which also meant that Zander wasn't even thinking about Arithmancy anymore. So uh, all hope of answering the very first question was lost. Sorry, Tanner. You brought up a blast from the past and not the good kind either. The sketchy kind.

Hadleigh had arrived on time and offered the Professor a smile by way of greeting. As others begun to arrive the small girl picked a seat up front and took out some parchment, her quill and the textbook she was sure she'd be soon to need.
It didn't exactly bother her that this Professor wasn't Professor Domingo as she didn't know the other Professor all that well to began with. However she had heard certain rumors around the halls on and off but she didn't know if she should have believed in what was being said. Clearly she should have by what Professor Tanner had just confirmed.
Just so they had someone capable teaching the class and they were going to learn something she didn't have a problem with it. Shifting in her seat Hady kept quiet letting those around her explain what they had been learning so far in class. There wasn't any need in saying anymore as everything had been covered already.

Professor Tanner was here to 'fill the void'. Did she know Arithmancy any more than they did, at least? That wouldn't be much, in Agatha's case.
Hm. They would see what this new professor knew soon enough. The fourth year didn't have a clue as to what they had covered before because she never really fully understood Arithmancy. Oh, she did remember ONE thing. "We once talked about how numbers are male and female." Which sounded like a lot of rubbish, to be fair, but hey, Agatha was just saying out loud what they had learned before from the Spanish lady.
Oh good, participation! That had actually been a grave fear of hers, that they would all just stare at her blankly and offer no input. But it looked like that wouldn't be a problem after all. "Genders, good. Thank you, Miss Hapgood," she said with a nod.

...
Aaaaaand it was on with the show.
Mkay so, Domingo not here, something to do with the Ministry, something to do with the chorts. Toby was sort of phasing in and out, but he absolutely caught the part about how Tanner was gonna get them through to the exams. THAT was a relief. Arithmancy was hard, okay? But Toby trusted Professor Tanner.
As for what they'd been doing... uhh... Good question. Tobias wasn't sure he could remember, being that he had an unreliable memory as it was. He rifled through his parchment, in case he'd accidentally pulled some old class note out of his bag, but nope. The Hufflepuff decided to go with what he could vaguely remember of the past lessons, and raised his hand.
"We did something about life path numbers, more recently. Calculated and interpreted the numbers of people we admired." At least, he was pretty sure it was the life path number that they'd looked at. Like 72 percent sure.
Now that he mentioned it, Tobias did look tired. And stressed. She made a mental note to check in on him in a week or so. Tiara shot a look to Sophie, who sat right behind him. Perhaps she could offer him some encouragement.
She knew she could still count on Tobias to offer input. "Life Path, so you have covered at least some of the Core." But had they covered any of the rest before the unfortunate incident? "Got it, thank you."

That wasn't exactly what she had been looking for. She had very little appreciation for complaints. However, she understood the need the vent frustration. In this spirit she decided not to address it. "I'm sorry it wasn't to your liking. Ethan subconsciously got his self-inking quill, and began to write the things that Professor Tanner was saying. Did she say...cooperating with the Ministry of Magic? Oh. Oh. This is big news. Was Simon listening??? Because they can finally close their own mini-investigation with this information!
Now, her first question. What did they learn from Professor Domingo? Agatha was the first to speak, and he decided to latch on to her answer. She did miss a few points, right? Hand up. "We learned about the Pythagoreans and their obsession with numbers, professor." That was one of her lessons that made his head ache. Arithmancy is a great class, but that topic was indeed challenging. For once, the answers couldn't be found in their textbooks.
She scribbled down what the Slytherin said on one of the numerous pieces of parchment in front of her. The list she had started with the previous answers was growing longer by the minute. "Ah, the Pythagoreans! A necessary focus, thank you Mr. Mordaunt." Good, so she didn't need to go down that path with them.

She made another lap around the room as the students continued to offer answers. Tiara happened to glance at Gabriel, whose face was turning the color of a cherry. Was it warm in here? She pushed a window open as wide as it could go before proceeding back to the front.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
It looked like the students were done offering input, but she had a nice little list to give her a basic idea of what to build on for the rest of the year. "Thank you for sharing. That sounds like a fairly good foundation for us to work from." She hadn't heard anything mentioned about what she had planned for today, at least. They wouldn't be covering old information.
"From the little that was left behind, I gather that Professor Domingo was planning on addressing Master Numbers some time in the near future." Or at least she had found two words that translated to 'number masters' according to the English-Spanish dictionary she'd had to go into Inverness to find. "I'd rather not repeat any information you already know. So let's start with asking what you know about Master Numbers." Yes, another question about what they already knew. But really, in the position she'd been thrown into, this was vital information to have.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Master Numbers? Adi did not know much about those. In his defense, Arithmancy was not one of his stronger subjects. But he did have a bit of information that he could share so he put his hand up.
"There are three Master Numbers. Eleven, Twenty two and thirty three.'' Er, yeah. That was about what he knew. Meh. Hopefully by the end of this lesson, his knowledge would be a lot broader about those numbers.

Ethan watched as the professor considered his answer and took down notes. It was kind of weird to actually witness it, because, wasn't he supposed to be the one taking down notes and vice-versa? The prefect gave the professor a nod, and sighed inwardly. At least they're not going to tackle the Pythagoreans today...or...?
All right then. Master numbers. What does he know about it? The prefect turned to look at Adi and gave the Hufflepuff prefect a grin. Yep, the Master Numbers are 11, 22, and 33. But what else was missing? Surely, they did come across the Master Number while practising the Reduction Method.
Ethan raised his hand as soon as Adi was done talking. "Master Numbers cannot be reduced professor." And...they have their own meanings, right?

"You're welcome." Agatha said politely after the new professor thanked her. The girl listened to her classmate's answers and professor Tanner's responses and good Mrogana, this was so BORING already. Arithmancy was pointless and Agatha was still wondering why on earth she took that subject.
Morgana.
Wait a minute... did Morgana know anything about Arithmancy? COuld it have helped her in any way??? The thought made the SLytherin perk up a bit and she wondered what the great Morgana could've done with the endless possibilities Arithmancy..... didn't offer.
Yeah, no. Morgana definitely did not take Arithmancy back in her school days. This was a waste of time.
Sigh.
Master Numbers? She had no clue what those were. Agatha was aware that from now on she was probably going to keep quiet because who would even know--- ugh, of course those silly know-it-alls would know useless information like that. Penelope was still trying to process the change in arithmancy professors, but she accepted that Professor Tanner was up to the task. Other students were telling the new arithmancy professor what they knew about master numbers, so it would probably be okay if she didn't say anything.
She got out parchment and a quill to take notes and looked toward Professor Tanner to give the appearance of paying attention. However, she was not really listening to what they already knew about master numbers, but she was still thinking about the change in arithmancy professors. Had Professor Domingo really been arrested? Did the former arithmancy professor have anything to do with the chorts last term? Could Domingo have been in cahoots with the chorts? Was that possible? What could the chorts have wanted at Hogwarts? Why did the chorts come to Hogwarts? Was there something else out there in the forbidden forest? Was the giant sinkhole that used to be the quidditch pitch really caused by the snow? Could the sinkhole be related to the quidditch threat? The sinkhole really changed the view of the grounds from Ravenclaw tower. It had looked much better with the quidditch pitch, even if they didn't use the quiddditch pitch.

..... Master numbers? He couldn't deny how familiar that sounded. But erm, he actually really never absorbed anything from this class. It wasn't something like Herbology or CoMC that was hands on and easy to grasp. Arithmancy was confusing and for that, Zander again shook his head and chose not to answer. Instead he sat back and started jotting down some things that the others mentioned. Others being namely Ethan and Adi.

Soph was still entranced by her own thoughts of Domingo and Tanner when the professor - or was she still a "missus," Sophie didn't know - opened a window. The cool spring air wafting through the room made her smile and it brought her back to Earth, but why had she opened the window in the first place? She couldn't immediately identify a reason, but Soph was grateful all the same.
But now she wished they could go have class outside.
On the topic of master numbers, the Ravenclaw wondered how much there really was to say about them. She knew a bit, sure, but... they were all pretty straight-forward, obvious things that people were all very quick to say. She wanted to be cheeky and say, Master numbers are the masters of all the numbers, but she didn't quite feel comfortable pushing her luck with Tanner just yet.
Heh.
So she stayed quiet for now, but at least she was finally paying attention.
Angel had no exams coming up not that she knew of anyway. "11, 22 and 33 are master numbers and you do not add the numbers together because you are then changing something that shouldn't be." Angel had raised her hand before speaking.
Merlin, every time Tobias heard someone mention 'exams', 'OWLs', or even just 'studying', he got an incredibly uncomfortable sensation right in his chest, and felt really super restless. But not the usual kind of Toby restless, it was something else entirely. Closer to the urge to just run away.
But he didn't. He sat there and listened and went between watching Tanner's progress around the room and looking out the window again, and more or less following with what was being said. As for that question, it felt like everything Toby knew about Master Numbers had already been offered, but he felt like surely Professor Tanner would be expecting more... but he couldn't remember any more. That made him panic a bit; if he couldn't remember stuff like this, how was he going to remember anything in the exam?
Trying to keep a neutral expression so nobody could tell he was having a miiiiinor panic, Tobias repeated that mantra in his head. The one that he'd learnt after recent events: My worth is not defined by academic success, my worth is not defined by academic success, my worth is not defined by academic success...
Fine. He was fine. It was okay that he couldn't contribute anything for this question. Toby concentrated on the slight breeze blowing in through the now open nearby window and remained quiet for this question.

Okay..
So there had been a staff switch around and now some flying instructor was the new arithmancy professor. Layla frowned a little staring the woman out before turning down into her notes. She had better know about this subject, she had enjoyed it. It was all mathsy and that was a subject she particularly excelled at in muggle school. Now here she was in a school she still didn’t feel comfortable in and the school board thought it was appropriate to shuffle the staff body around or whatever.
Urgh.
There were no standards. They needed an inspection.
As for the questions, Layla had nothing else to report. They were pretty simplistic, ones that only had one or two answers to and others had gotten there first. What else did she have left to say that didn’t mean repeating other people’s words and being incredibly boring? Instead she sat back on her chair and merely listened to the repetitive answers that you could quite frankly learn yourself by reading out of a textbook. They didn’t need to be taught these things. Could they get onto the practical elements now?

Ariel continued being confused by this Professor. Maybe she should leave this room and go exploring, but since she loved learning about people this would be a great opportunity for her.
Maybe she would keep quiet for the moment and wait for this Professor to make sense. At least she wasn't as bad as Ursula, because that girl had made her think that all the Professors were evil.
Reaching into the bag she had found with a bunch of human objects (which turned out to have been her own), she looked through it before pulling out what she was sure was called a book, but there was no words inside which was weird. Next she pulled out a skinny cylinder thing that was yellow and had something red on one end and a dark point on the other. Curious, she bit on it to see if it was some sort of food.

Yes, Ben remembered about master numbers and the rule about not reducing them further. That had stuck with him, especially after he had caught the fact that Harry Potter's life path was a master number and incorrectly reduced by the now-it-seemed-former professor. Maybe it hadn't been so purposeful after all. Maybe she had made the mistake genuinely as she fudged her way through teaching.
Whatever the case, his classmates including Adi and Angel had already spoken up about they knew about the master numbers so Benny stayed quiet. There was no point in just repeating it all since he knew nothing more. It was all review time it seemed.

Master numbers; Lex knew those as well.
When you hit the NEWT level you had to know all that basic stuff. It was the difference between a pass and a fail. As luck would have it, she'd managed an 'A' during her OWLs. Nothing left to do but pass them again, yeah? That's really all she had to do. No need for an 'E' or an 'O'. Aurors didn't need this sort of subject. Yes, Alexa had read all about the qualifications and Arithmancy didn't happen to make the cut but she was already taking the class. Her goal was passing. That's really all she wanted.
Hearing the Professor state that she didn't wish for a repetition of information, the Gryffindor could only sit quietly and listen to the others state the things she knew about Master Numbers. There wasn't all that much and not being one of the first to answer, she couldn't guarantee that what she had to say wouldn't be repeated.
Hard life it was, especially when you added numbers.

When Professor asked the next question about Master numbers, Jasmine took a moment to think. Apparently a moment was too long because several answers were given before she could even raise her hand. Yes Jasmine remembered everything that they had learned about Master numbers.......everything that had already been said. Since the answer possibilities to that question were pretty limited, she decided that she'd best stay quiet on this one.
It was time to fire up the old quill and start taking notes. Hopefully they would move on to some new information soon. Although, Jasmine could always stand a good review in the area of Arithmancy.

Master numbers...right. They had learned about those. Norah dipped a quill in ink and placed it at the head of her parchment as she tried to think of something to say on the subject. SEEEE in any other class she'd be able to review stuff but arithmancy was dumb and made no sense. Sigh. Maybe this new teacher would actually teach things instead of making her read. Yeah, that'd be nice.
The second year rested her cheek on one hand and stared at the front of the room. Everyone else had said the little information she could recall about master numbers, so she just sat and waited for the next question to be asked. Not that she'd be able to answer it.

Master Numbers? Zhenya knew that term, where from? Hogwarts? Russia? She racked her brain trying to remember. Master… they were the leader? Obviously numbers were… numbers. She raised her hand "Er, Master Numbers are those numbers which have extra significance attached to them. They are numbers which, when broken down, are double digit numbers." That was all she really understood of them. She wasn't sure which numbers were master numbers. Were they all numbers that were double digits? All numbers, 10-99? Why did they just stop at the double digit, and not be broken down further? Zhenya really didn't know. Arithmancy certainly wasn't her strong subject, but she opened a fresh page on her book to write down all the dot points.
