Arithmancy 2

It is unlikely anyone knows what to expect upon entering the Arithmancy classroom today - even the new professor! The outrageous circumstances of the previous professor's exit are surely on everyone's mind, but Professor Tanner hopes to make a fresh start. Though she has had little time to prepare for her new role, she certainly is enthusiastic.

Not much can be gleaned of the content for today's lesson by simply looking around. The board has only five words scrawled across it: Arithmancy Lesson Two, Professor Tanner. Said professor is standing behind a small podium that has a few pieces of paper packed with notes. Come on in and take a seat!

OOC: The lesson has now moved to this thread.

Heather was actually surprised that the Headmistress had been able to find someone to take Professor Domingo's place, considering that it was the end of March already and they only had about three months left of the school term. But she had, so here Heather was going to Arithmancy class again. She didn't really know what to expect, since even though this professor had apparently been at this school before as the Quidditch official/Flying instructor, she nor her dorm mates had been here during the professor's time. Hopefully, she was easier to understand than Professor Domingo. Seriously, it was hard to learn anything when you couldn't understand a word the professor was saying.

Walking into the room, Heather was surprised to see who she assumed was the new professor standing behind a podium and the class and professor's name written on the board. That was unusual for Hogwarts. Though not for Beauxbatons, so she exactly what to do. She took a seat quietly, greeted the professor with a "Good morning," and sat there otherwise quiet, waiting for class to start.

DaniDiNardo 11-08-2014 05:35 AM

Professor Domingo got the sack, or well, that's what people kept saying and having not seen the Latina at the staff table during meals anymore she was actually inclined to believe this. It was either that or the woman had grown an anti-social shell and only came out after dark. Admittedly, the idea wasn't so far fetched by virtue of the fact this WAS Hogwarts and stranger things had happened but no, all she kept hearing was the woman was gone. Some people said they saw Law Enforcement walking around too but that might not have been related so she wouldn't put much stock into it.

Who would they get now? Merlin not another Professor Fr3nch--althoooough, with the rate at which the teaching was going in this place now, Lex was inclined to have another nutter for a Professor. Might as well. He or she would fit right in in this madhouse they called a school.

Stepping in, Alexa nearly took a step out, noticeably taken aback by Professor Tanner standing by a podium. What was she doing here and not down on the sunken quidditch pitch trying to make it better? Can't have flying class and such all the way up here. Or rather, they could, but it'd be a bit difficult and the Firsties might get hurt...on purpose.

Weird..."G'morning Professor...." The hesitation was evident in her voice while she tried making sense of the whole thing.

Felixir 11-08-2014 05:51 AM

Toby didn't read the papers, so he hadn't heard any of the 'official' stuff about Professor Domingo. All he knew was that he'd gone to visit her office one day and she'd been nowhere to be found, and then everyone seemed to be talking about some sort of arrest? Well, whatever. Domingo wasn't here, which meant another new professor.

When he stepped into the room, Toby actually stopped in his tracks. Tyner. Tanner. The flying professor... here. Tobias blinked, letting this register in his foggy brain, but then... very quickly accepted it and stepped inside to take his regular window-side seat. Tanner teaching Arithmancy. Cool.

"Hi Professor Tanner," the Hufflepuff said, with less of his usual exuberance and enthusiasm, and no bounce at all, but still smiling all the same. Toby sat, got out his note-taking things, and waited, glancing out of the window from time to time as he twirled his quill absently in one hand.

ArianaBlack 11-08-2014 08:07 AM

That's right, Zander had heard the rumors about Professor Domingo, but the question was... Did he believe them? Well, that was an easy one. Absolutely not. If anything the rumors were probably Professor Romanos' doing. Getting the good guys off her trail, you know? Just 'cause he felt weirdly confident enough *ahem*-- not weirdly confident, like felix felicis confident-- didn't mean that he wasn't still a bit suspicious. This kid didn't really let go of things too easily.

But as he walked into the classroom, O________O so it was true then? He had walked in just in time to hear a few other students refer to the woman as Professor, which must mean that Tanner was their new Professor... Which must mean that the Rumors were true. Which also meant, huh?

Arithmancy was definitely the most confusing class. And it hadn't even started yet. Merlin, Zander just couldn't wait until the numbers came in. Joy.

Walking past the new Professor unto his way to a desk, Zander looked up and said a quick, "Good day, Professor," before finding a seat. Let the torture begin. Also, how ironic was it that the flying instructor-- aka Zander's second least favorite subject-- was now teaching his first least favorite subject. Oh the bitter irony. Was this karma for something?

FearlessLeader19 11-08-2014 12:31 PM

So Professor Domingo was gone. That made Adi one very disappointed Hufflepuff. But Professor Tanner wouldn't be so bad, right? That was his thought as he stepped into the classroom and he spotted her.

"Hello, Professor.''
Adi smiled broadly. He was going to remain open minded about her teaching this subject. Yep! Anyway, now to find a seat. Oh looky. It was Zander, the weird Gryffindor. "Hiya, Zander,'' the Puffer said as he slipped into the seat beside the boy.

Edward Penguin 11-08-2014 12:36 PM

Ian wandered into the Arithmancy classroom. He had hoped that there would be no more Arithmancy lessons this term, but alas that had not proven the case. The head,I stress had quickly worked to get a new one. Ian had heard the stories. He just hoped this one was more teachy than the previous Arithmancy professor had been.

He walked into the classroom, which was quite austere, and greeted the new professor. Good Day professor. he turned and waved to the students who occupied seats, including Adi. He then made his way to his now comfortable back corner.

Daydreamer11 11-08-2014 01:03 PM

Jasmine arrived for Arithmancy class unsure of what to expect. She had heard......things about Professor Domingo that were quite disturbing. In a crazy way, she had taken a liking to the sassy Profesora and now she was supposedly gone. Well Jasmine was taking an I'll believe it when I see it approach to the whole thing.

When she walked into the classroom, Professor Domingo was indeed gone. Yet another person feeding into Jasmine's abandonment issues. The gone without a trace count was officially at three and counting. Perhaps the even bigger surprise was who was standing at the front of the class, ready to teach apparently. Professor Tanner? Well OK, why not? Jasmine had definitely learned to expect the unexpected here at Hogwarts. When you were a student, you kind of learned to roll with things......so OK. "Hello Professor", Jasmine said to the former flying instructor. Then she found a seat and waited.

Ethan was busy checking his things inside his bag when he reached the door of the Arithmancy classroom. For the nth time during that week, he wasn't feeling himself as of late, and kept on forgetting some of his school stuff.

Arithmancy book, parchments, self-inking quills...wand...so far so good.

The prefect sighed and opened the door and saw...well, that's not Lolita Domingo. Ethan read the writings on the board, and quickly memorized it. New professor? Again? Or was she...oh wait, she's the Flying Instructor, right??? What was she doing here then? Ethan closed his mouth before the professor sees him gawking and sat on his usual seat in the classroom. "Good morning, Professor Tanner." Questions...he got questions, but he decided against asking the professor up front as to where...or what happened to Domingo. Surely, she'd tell in a while, yeah?

The prefect got his writing implements and book out, sat back, and waited for the class to start.

Hera 11-08-2014 02:03 PM

He was SUPER unsure about making it to THIS class again... but considering the super evil not very nice point stealing lady was GONE.... it mightn't hurt to give it another crack.

Zeke hitched his bag up higher on his shoulder, took a DEEEEP BREATH, and then entered the classroom.

"Hi... Professor," he greeted tentatively - and then he SCOOTED to a seat and plopped himself in it.

Holmesian Feline 11-08-2014 02:07 PM

Something had been up with Professor Domingo. That much had been for certain when they stopped having Arithmacy lessons which was something Benny had been half-fine with given his soso skills in the subject. Then there had been talk and rumors around the castle both on the woman leaving for good and a new one to take her place. Well not exactly new, especiually when the notice came out announcing a class and confirming a swap of staff positions.

Interesting.

"Good morning, Professor," he greeted once he had stepped inside the room and noticed she was indeed inside. Then moving to find a seat, the fourth year opted for one near Zander and Adi. "Hey," he greeted the two boys as he sat down, taking out some parchment and quill.

Alright, the first student! Tiara had a certain panicky thrill somewhere near her stomach when the young lady walked in. "Good morning yourself, Miss Xanthopoulos. Please, take a seat anywhere you'd like," she said with a slightly nervous smile.

Yes, she noticed the uncertainty in that greeting. "You're in the right place, don't worry. Thank you for coming, Miss Cambridge." It was always good to have student leadership around. "Sit anywhere you'd like."

Here was a student that did not look happy to be here. Understandable. She remembered from her own days as a student here that this class had been difficult for a large percentage of students due to its math content. "And a good morning to you as well, Mr. Adair." She gave him a quick smile to hopefully put him at ease.

Another prefect, excellent. And this one was clearly confused. "Good morning, Mr. Mordaunt. You've found the right place, don't worry." She echoed the same reassurance she had already given this morning. Clearly word of her new position had not spread amongst the students as of yet, but now it surely would.

"And a good morning to you, Mr. Atreyu." It was good to see people sitting by others that were not all from their house. The best way to build inter-house unity was friendships such as these, in her opinion.

OOC: We'll begin in a few hours!

First impressions.

FRIENDLIER.

GOOD morning. GLAD you've made it.

... Those sounded like NICE things. Zeke beamed now, content that this lady wasn't a dragon lady out to steal his points (his means for Hogwarts domination and Gryffindor legacy) - but looks could be deceptive, COULD be.

While he waited for the lesson to get underway, Zeke pulled out his textbook and some parchment from his bag, he'd need those for notes. More to the point, he'd need his quill and ink for notes too, so those soon followed.

Angel was a bit scared as she walked into Arithmancy. "Good morning Professor." Angel wondered what was going on with the Professor and what had happened to the old one since she had been in trouble by the looks of things.

Students seemed to be filing in very slowly. Had the word not gotten out that Arithmancy classes were back underway? "Good morning, Miss Valentine. Pick anywhere," she said, gesturing to the seats.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Was this all? She had hoped for a better showing. Nevertheless, it was time for the class to begin, so begin it she would. Tiara surveyed the class and cleared her throat rather loudly. "Good morning, everyone. Thank you for coming."

She had spent awhile thinking about this and decided that it was better to address the elephant in the room and get it behind them. "As should be readily apparent, I am not Professor Domingo." She began to walk a slow circuit around the room as she spoke. "You have probably heard that she is no longer with us. Rather, she is cooperating with the Ministry of Magic in an investigation into the curious happenings with the chorts last year." In her mind the verdict was still out on that, but it certainly was a foregone conclusion for some of her colleagues, especially the Headmistress. "The Headmistress has asked me to fill the void for the rest of the year and I assure you I have every intent of getting you through your O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. examinations at the end of the year."

"I have had very little in the way of notes from Professor Domingo." Most everything left behind by la profesora had been confiscated as evidence by the Ministry. And what was left was mostly in Spanish. "Perhaps some of you could enlighten me as to what you had been covering before I took over?"

Hey Ju 11-08-2014 05:42 PM

.....

Agatha wasn't sure whether to be suspicious or simply curious about this new teacher. She had seen her before at the Feast, but nowhere else. She wouldn't even remember the woman's name if it wasn't for the note on the board.

The Slytherin listened to the explanation about professor Domingo and raised an eyebrow. No longer with them? ...Cooperating with the Ministry? Alright, Agatha was definitely suspicious now. Professor Tanner was here to 'fill the void'. Did she know Arithmancy any more than they did, at least? That wouldn't be much, in Agatha's case.

Hm. They would see what this new professor knew soon enough. The fourth year didn't have a clue as to what they had covered before because she never really fully understood Arithmancy. Oh, she did remember ONE thing. "We once talked about how numbers are male and female." Which sounded like a lot of rubbish, to be fair, but hey, Agatha was just saying out loud what they had learned before from the Spanish lady.

Looking from the window to Tanner, Toby paused before letting a wider smile than before grace his features.

"Everything's fine, Professor," he replied, which was partly true at least. "Just... tired. Lots of studying, y'know? OWLs, and all." The Hufflepuff tapped the feathered end of his quill on the desk and went on smiling. He was cool, he was okay, he was ready to learn.

...

Aaaaaand it was on with the show.

Mkay so, Domingo not here, something to do with the Ministry, something to do with the chorts. Toby was sort of phasing in and out, but he absolutely caught the part about how Tanner was gonna get them through to the exams. THAT was a relief. Arithmancy was hard, okay? But Toby trusted Professor Tanner.

As for what they'd been doing... uhh... Good question. Tobias wasn't sure he could remember, being that he had an unreliable memory as it was. He rifled through his parchment, in case he'd accidentally pulled some old class note out of his bag, but nope. The Hufflepuff decided to go with what he could vaguely remember of the past lessons, and raised his hand.

"We did something about life path numbers, more recently. Calculated and interpreted the numbers of people we admired." At least, he was pretty sure it was the life path number that they'd looked at. Like 72 percent sure.

Edward Penguin 11-08-2014 06:19 PM

Ian nodded at Toby's response. He raised his hand. she didn't do lots of instruction. Most of our lessons were using our textbook to find the answers as she provided direction. that was the way Ian saw it. It was his very first class and he'd learned very little. It could of course have something to do with his unhappiness with the way he felt treated by the horrid woman.

FearlessLeader19 11-08-2014 07:31 PM

Professor Tanner was another one of those Professors whom you can count on to return your cheery grin. For some reason, her smile reassured Adi this was going to be a good class.
...................

Looks like Adi would be hanging out with to Gryffindors for this class. Zander the Weird and Benny the Dragon. "Hi,'' Adi replied to the greeting. Would the lesson be starting soon? Yes, it would!

Oh. So that's why Domingo was not here anymore. Pity. The woman really knew her Arithmancy. For obvious reasons. Anyway, what exactly had they been doing in previous classes? His wife Agatha and Tobias pretty much summed it up.

WhittyBitty 11-08-2014 07:53 PM

Why was she here? Ariel had no idea other than she had been walking down the corridor of her and Prince Eric's castle earlier, when she saw a number of people enter a room. The curious girl she was, she had followed right after them.

... Now she regretted that decision because there was a person talking about owls and newts whatever they were. This had to be the type of human called a Professor the nice girl had told her about because nothing made sense.

Weasley174 11-08-2014 08:16 PM

Angel looked at the Professor as she sat down. "Professor we learned how to study from a textbook." Angel said truthfully, that was what she had learnt anyway she had no idea what else she had learned because most of it did come from the books.

Stefan 11-08-2014 09:18 PM

Found the right place? Well, he knows that he's inside the Arithmancy classroom, but he was rather...confused, perhaps intrigued, as to why she's teaching this class now, and not Professor Domingo? He heard rumors of course, but those can't be trusted unless he hears it from a reliable source.

Ethan subconsciously got his self-inking quill, and began to write the things that Professor Tanner was saying. Did she say...cooperating with the Ministry of Magic? Oh. Oh. This is big news. Was Simon listening??? Because they can finally close their own mini-investigation with this information!

Now, her first question. What did they learn from Professor Domingo? Agatha was the first to speak, and he decided to latch on to her answer. She did miss a few points, right? Hand up. "We learned about the Pythagoreans and their obsession with numbers, professor." That was one of her lessons that made his head ache. Arithmancy is a great class, but that topic was indeed challenging. For once, the answers couldn't be found in their textbooks.

griffin 11-08-2014 09:50 PM

Penelope was still struggling with the fact that Professor Tanner was the new arithmancy professor. Professor Domingo was gone? Did the former arithmancy professor have something to do with the chorts that had been at the school last year? Did Professor Tanner know anything about arithmancy?

Professor Tanner had asked what they had been covering in arithmancy, but all Penelope could say was, "You're the new arithmancy professor?" Everyone else could fill Professor Tanner in on what they had covered with Professor Domingo.

Watson 11-08-2014 10:07 PM

In his seat next to his best mate (Ethan Sherlock Holmes), Simon's eyes widened when he saw an Arithmancy Professor that DID not look like Domingo. He was going to make a comment to Ethan when the Professor began the class so the boy fiddled with the parchment in his notebook as he listened to the Professor speak.

No kebabs?

SIGH. He really wanted to bring that up but he felt as if Professor Tanner wouldn't appreciate a comment like that so Simon stayed silent and took notes for a quick recap. Yep, he was busy being a very good student.

Daydreamer11 11-08-2014 11:29 PM

So there it was. The things that Jasmine had heard were true. She couldn't believe that Professor Domingo had anything to do with the Chorts at Hogwarts last year. Well now Professor Tanner would be teaching them. Jasmine had been a little a lot worried about surviving her Arithmancy NEWTs. Hopefully everything would work out.

So Professor Tanner wanted to know what they had learned so far. Jasmine raised her hand and said, "We learned about the Reduction method". And some other things, but one answer was sufficient or now.
