A bit confused about the plot? Housemates talking about a mysterious something going bump in the night? Here's where you can catch up on happenings around the castle and in Hogsmeade -- out of character, of course.

This means that unless your student character heard this stuff from other students or witnessed the actual event, your student character doesn't know about it.

Also, this is a reminder to everyone to only post updates on the school plot here. Please do not post the happenings of your student character in here; that kind of chat goes in the school chat thread.

Have fun!

The Headmistress has spoken!

She sighed and slipped out of her seat to deliver the speech. "Thank you for joining us, Josh," she said simply and moved around to the little podium, casting Sonorous on herself as she went.

Speech time.

"Welcome back, everyone, welcome back." Anastasia waited for the crowd to settle down and listen. "Listen. We start this year on a somewhat somber note. Some of you," she LOOKED at CERTAIN TABLES, "may have heard that we are not having Quidditch this year. Now, before you start an uproar," she held up one hand, "it's for a reason. We had a deliberate threat made against the school's athletes and had to shut it down as a result - at least until we can investigate the source of the threat." Besides that, Tyner had gone on sabbatical, and no quidditch official in his or her right mind was going to try to take on her job.

She flipped her hair over her shoulder and cast a look back toward the staff table. "You'll notice some new faces at the table, not just of new professors, but also of new security that will be present around the school. Again, these measures are for your protection. You cannot learn, you cannot play, you cannot live if your security is at stake. So bear with us as we try to get through this threat."

There. That being said... "Congratulations to our new Sortees, our new staffers, Ms. Morgan and Ms. Glendower, our new Head Boy and Girl, and our new Ravenclaw Head of House." That about covered everyone, so Bunz brought her hands together in a light clap. "Now that the notices are given out, take care and enjoy the feast." With those closing words, the elf-made delicious meal appeared on all the tables, and Bunz happily (though she wasn't actually happy) returned to her seat.

Dinnertime!

Heading up the pathway towards the great castle, this centaur paid little attention to the handful of human foals scattered there besides finding it curious that they were not under the protection of shelter in this hostile weather. Youth was often foolish.

It would not do to have anyone catch sight of her, not tonight, not when she had important business to attend to. But the last several hundred yards provided absolutely no cover. She shot a look up to the highest towers where she knew two common rooms were. It was now or never if she was to investigate what she needed to.

Lolita made a break for it. Feet pounding and heart racing, she exclaimed softly when a loud CRACK! issued forth across the silent landscape. The sticks had no moisture left in them in the extreme cold. Stumbling slightly, the Latina caught herself before she hit the stone-hard earth. A bit of panic entered her stride as she made the last mad dash into the cover of the trees. She didn't stop to see if anyone was following her, but plunged straight into the heart of the forest to see what she could find.

Normally, these spiders would have no fear in approaching and defending their territory, but in the face of this winter...and with everything happening within....neither wished to approach first.

The spiders remained hidden in the shadows, quiet and watchful of the human scampering through their trees. For now, they only watched with all their eyes...

That's when she heard the rustling noises, followed by... was that clicking? Lolita froze. Somehow she didn't think that whatever was making that noise was what she was looking for. "¡Salga! Away with you!"

The clacking only stopped when she spoke. Rude humans...

"What are you doing in our forest?" The first spider's low and commanding voice came floating out of the darkness. English was what they should speak here. This was a forest in Scotland, not El Salvador!

What was she doing in their forest? THEIR forest? Just like an acromantula, assuming it all belonged to them. "My purpose in the forest is really none of your concern. Official school business, if you need to know." Which they didn't. "I mean you and your kin you harm, nor do I intend to venture toward your nests."

As though they were measly field mice...there was more clacking between the two spiders after her speech, and then the first spider came out into the light. He towered above her, at least seven feet higher than even the tallest human wearing elevated shoes.

"The school does not need to enter our forest," the acromantula intoned. "You need not venture anywhere within here. It is unsafe. Even we do not venture into the depths any-more."

The second spider's pincers clacked excitedly together as though agreeing with the first spider, though she remained shrouded by the shadows behind the first spider. "Leave now," the first spider warned, his thick and quick legs marching closer toward the human, "and we will forgive your trespass."

She fully agreed. The school did not need to enter the forest, but she was not here for them. She was here to look for signs of... Wait, the acromantulas were migrating? Interesante. Would they really affect the spiders like that? It was hard to tell.

At first Lolita was tempted to give a fiery reply, but even she knew that testing two acromantulas was unwise. Besides, she could always come back a different night when her path would be clear. "Fine. I shall take my leave now." She backed up several steps before turning and heading back toward the Hogwarts grounds, keeping a firm grip on her wand in the process.

The humans were entering the forests when all the other creatures....nearly all the other creatures...were leaving it. Did they not know? Had the centaurs not warned them?

It was none of the acromantulas' concern, but now they had certain things to discuss with their tribe before they left.

The Latina lit her wand nonverbally as she entered the forest in a different location this time. No need to trouble the acromantulas again, after all. Plunging ever further into the darkness, she walked on for a long time, forced to pause on several occasions so she could heat herself back up with her wand. After awhile, she noticed that the cold was becoming even that much more pronounced.

And that's when she saw what she had been looking for.

Startled and thrilled by the scene before her, her adrenaline spiked. The light from her wand flared brightly and sent up unintentional sparks, which were sure to be spotted from the castle if anyone happened to be looking out over the forest. But that was far from Lolita's immediate concern. Afraid, she turned and began to sprint back through the trees and away from what she was sure would have been extreme danger.

Once she was sure she was facing no imminent threat, a smirk crossed her face. Now she knew where to come back to. She wound her way through the forest and exited far from where she had entered. Checking to make sure she was still invisible, she crept back toward the castle.

A whole pack of the Monsters emerged from the trees. In the darkness, it is difficult to tell what they are, but they are big. With their natural defences, The Monsters attacked the spiders first before pushing them aside to claw at the humans and knocking them down, leaving a considerable amount of scratches and cuts on all of them. A few Monsters got roudy enough to gore the man in front (Leo) and the student beside him (Victor). The Monsters did not mean to kill, just harm enough to scare so they would not return to their home in the forest. Once the damage was done, they vanished back into the thickness of the trees, leaving the humans and the spiders to themselves again.

The above is an excerpt from the epic poem written by Berinon the Bard recounting the events leading up to the first of many duels that would occur between Morgan la Fay and Merlin. While wizarding historians argue the authenticity of the account, some theorizing that the cause of the five month winter recorded by scribes of the time was in fact cause by an unusual chort migration due to the increase of tuberculosis cases among muggles, evidence of la Fay’s carvings and the bind runes carved by Merlin himself to seal her curse away still remain on innermost chamber of the Star Temple of Avalon.

And to Bryce, it sounded a lot like the nanny was the one who had raised Jazz and not her actual parents. Serious judging was going on. "It's saying a lot. I wouldn't let them make me feel bad about it, if I were you." This may have a little to do with the fact that he didn't want someone in his department feeling bad about working there. "Spain's a great place, by the looks of it. Have you ever been?"

SNORT. "Don't tell me I have to go through an initiation process in the department." Was that a joke? Even he didn't know. "Two years is quite some time. And you already know Ronnie."

Was he good at hiding his feelings? No. DID he wish he could have hidden this from Jasmine? In a heartbeat. "You could say that," he said slowly, "We might need to stop work for a while so that--"

One word: rude.

And unexpected. Three words.

Before he could finish his sentence, a head of red hair popped out of his fireplace, making Bryce jump and yell out, "Gulping Gargoyles!" Was this planned?! Had Ronnie mentioned that he was going to have a guest today? His guess was no for both, because this was an urgent call. From Hogwarts.

The letter from St. Mungo's was going to be swept off to one side. Didn't need to bother her with that.

"Hello, Ms! Take a seat, have a pastry," he said, nodding at the seat on the other side of his desk and at the tray of pastries on his desk that were meant to be for himself and his employees. Surely, they could share, yes? "What brings you here?"

Would it be rude to call her a gingeraffe as well?

Have a seat, take a pastry! "Well I would if I could," Anastasia replied with a grim expression, "but Hogwarts is rather snowed in at the moment, you see, so my Floo connection is shaky enough as it is." He could put a pastry in her mouth, though, she would like that. Ahem. Later.

"I'm Headmistress Truebridge and I'm contacting you, Mr.....? You are the head of this department, correct?" He looked so young, but she would continue with her message anyway. "Hogwarts has an infestation of what believe are chorts currently living in our forest and causing a viral winter for us. Now, we are trying to get the students home in time for summer, but that won't get rid of the beasts and the climate hovering over the school still."

She took a breath and tried not to inhale too much soot. "Do you think your department and the creatures one can help us? We would like to remove these Dark beasts and get the weather back to normal ASAP."

The redhead in the fire gave a look to the two sitting there in comfort, able to go outside whenever they pleased, able to enjoy sunshine and their framilies, and sighed internally.

...."Please."

So she wasn't coming in, then? Shame. He gave Jasmine a single nod and said, "Excuse me, Miss Jasmine," before taking a pastry and a napkin and heading over towards the redhead. The thirty year old man sat down cross legged in front of her because according to her, this was urgent.

And it was. It really really was.

"Howell. Bryce Howell. I am the Department Head." And he was speaking to the Headmistress, of all people. The man did wonder why it took so long for her to get in touch with him or someone at the Ministry but no matter. "We were discussing the school situation at a recent meeting, funnily enough. Were going to try and contact you so thank you for contacting me." They thought that the Cold Ones were attacking but that was something he wasn't about to mention.

As for the Chorts, all he could say was thank Merlin and Circe and all the Wizarding hierarchy that he wasn't in the Creatures department.

He DID brighten up when she mentioned something about helping. "I'll talk to Harmony, the Creatures Head," Who was a little... eccentric was a good word, wasn't it? "and we'll gather up our best teams. Might need to borrow one other employee from another team too." Because if Max knew enough about Cold Ones, he probably knew lots about chorts too.

"Has the situation gotten worse since..." When had the article been released? "... March? April?"

Bryce Howell, right. Annie would be committing that to memory since 1) he could be the school's saving grace from this winter; and 2) she felt bad for the young man already trapped in a lifetime of what would surely be misery since he worked at the Ministry. Heh.

Plus he had brought a pastry over to the fire. She tried not to look at that and instead focused on his nice face as he talked. Funnily enough, someone was already working on the school's problem?! "Well I'm just glad no one forgot about us," she remarked with juuust a bit of bitterness.

"Great!" He would talk to the other head for her! And gather up teams, which was Ministry talk for doing something about it. Finally. THANK MERLIN. This would be good news to take back to her staff. "We have a few professors with some knowledge of the chorts, and the students did some research on what may be causing this winter... but the sooner you can get here to investigate," for us, because that forest was DANGEROUS, "the better."

Annie shook her head slowly at his last question. "We were hoping some of the owls would come back when the calendar said May on it... but no luck yet. I did see an icicle melt yesterday though!" So that was progress? And plus, her floo was working now. Ish. For a bit. She'd best not tempt her luck with this short message-delivery, though. "Please send your team by June 1. We are going to dig our way ou----"

Wellp, the Floo cut off. At least she had gotten her message through. :/

Obviously we have had to weather a few odd circumstances," ha ha punny, right? "But rest assured that the rest of the wizarding world is fully enjoying their June, and after tonight, you will be too." She faked a smile for the students.

"As always, we have a few goodbyes to say this term, some to our friends, some to our departing professors, but we also have a few congratulations! Congratulations go out to Gryffindor on their successfully winning the House Cup, and to Slytherin on winning the Gobstones Cup. Congratulations to us ALL, also, as no one died or aged this term."

She almost said 'or was injured' but a glance at the staff table reminded her that that wasn't true. So, with those announcements, Bunz led the tables in a round of applause.

"One final announcement: please be careful going out to the carriages, and seventh years, if I were you, I wouldn't risk being bold and stupid and taking the boats across the icy lake to the train station. Just take a carriage. It's still cold outside, WE KNOW, but we're working on it."

And that was that. Speech given, the food had appeared and the Headmistress hurried back to her seat to grab something warm.
