Was it just her? Or was it a little chilly outside this morning? Seren stood outside the entrance to Greenhouse Eight waiting patiently for the students to assemble. Pulling down on the sleeve of her black work robes, Seren fixed it closer to her skin and held it in the already gloved palm of her hands. Her gaze fell to a patch of grass only feet away where its frost had not yet been disturbed by footprints. At least it would be nicer inside. Much, much nicer.

QUOTE=Mordred;11613580]Ethan turned his attention to the Ravenclaw this time. “Hi Jasmine! My name’s Ethan.” Waaaves for you because he just held a dead rat a few minutes ago with his gloved hand. “Okay.” The Slytherin tucked both of his hands behind him and eyed Vinnie. “Hey, Vinnie! Come and join us over here. You can help water the plants.” She can…cast Aguamenti, yes? Yes.
Jasmine came back with an older boy. Oh heeeeeey. Yeah, he saw him before during the opening feast. You know, when he thought that the Hufflepuff bunch was his house mates? Confusing, that night was. Anyway. “Hi Cris! Yeah, sure no problem. We will be able to finish the task faster that way.” With older students and such behind him…this task will be easy peasy.
Weigela bush it is! Ethan bopped his head as he made his way towards the bush and pointed his wand at it dramatically. "Immobulus!" The Slytherin did a small dance as he waited for his team to sprinkle it with dung and water it. "All safe, you guys." Ethan smiled as he moved away from the spot and eyed the Lilies.
Hmm. Interesting plant right there. Could they water that one next? Please? He's the youngest in the bunch you know...
Oh wait, the Weigela bush had already been frozen, but not wanting to dampen the young Slytherin's enthusiasm, Cris remained silent and let the boy freeze the poor bush again. Turning to Jasmine, he winked at her. "All yours again," he mouthed the words to Jasmine, before quickly turning away to hide a smile.

She trusted her partners to keep the plant at bay in the meantime. Turning to Cris, Jasmine said, "It's all yours to water".
Ethan seemed excited to tackle the chokeberry bush next. Jasmine then addressed Ethan. "I will immobilize the bush and you water this one while Chris finishes watering the Weigela." Jasmine looked at Ethan and gave him the go ahead sign to start watering the bush. Calling over to Cris, she said, "When you're done, maybe you can help Ethan finish up with the watering here."
Giving Jasmine a thumbs up sign, Cris walked over the newly fertilized Weigela bushed and pointed his wand at the base of the plant. "Aguamenti," he said the incantation and watched as water slowly trickled out of his wand and immersed into the soil. He continued to test the soil with the fingers of his free hand, to make sure that he wasn't overwatering the plant, and when the soil was sufficiently dampened, he ended the spell.
Then he gently tapped down on the soil to remove all the air bubbles before standing up. "Okay Ms. Weigela, you're free to roam about the pot now," Cris whispered to the plant, giving it a little pat on its leaves.
Giving Jasmine a nod, he walked over to join Ethan. "I'll water this half and you can water this half. That way we'll finish this up twice as fast. We can start right after Jasmine has added the dragon dung fertilizer," Cris smiled encouragingly before giving Jasmine the go ahead nod to proceed fertilizing the Chockeberry bush.

And this seemed to be the growing trend right here. Taking plants that had already been immobilized so she'd hardly have to lift a finger. No complaints here. Lex was more than happy to fertilize plants that people were giving up for technical grabs. This time it was that Marigold girl. A Hufflepuff, doing most of the work so she wouldn't have to. This seemed plenty legit to her.
So yes, Lex would happily take some of the dung fertilizer there and sprinkle it as the Professor has suggested they do.
A little here...some on that side....she could even reach under the shrubs to get at the soil closer to the stem with these bad boys paralyzed like they were. Made it all kinds of easier to get the work done thoroughly. Something she was positive the Professor would appreciate.
Was there anyone else offering frozen plants or would she finally have to draw her own wand?

Compared to the dead rats and raw meat, dung was no big deal. Kate grabbed a scoop and scooped up some dung. Yum…was what she was sure the plants thought about this. It had a nice…full smell, she supposed. At least she didn't have to touch it, even with gloves.
Holding her scoop of dung, Kate looked around. Now…where was an immobilized plant so she could fertilize a plant without getting eaten?
Aha! There! Kate made a beeline to the older student who had paralyzed a shrub. Her shrub! It wanted her scoop! Kate slowly dumped the contents of her scoop around the base of the shrub, using the edge of the scoop itself to help spread it.
There! She grinned up at the boy. "Thanks, I didn't want to get eaten!"
And then another little Ravenclaw girl.
You know, Kalla, Sophie, Tora and Hope aside, it seemed to Cutty that maybe the up and coming generation of Ravenclaw girls was actually going to live up to their house founder's expectation of those sorted into her house.
Circe, but this one was really small too. Probably a first year as well. He watched as she carefully sprinkled dung on the shrub. "Of course! And don't worry. I wouldn't let you get eaten. Aquamenti!" He casted to water the shrub the little Ravenclaw girl had just fertilized. "Name's Cutty Mordaunt." He said introducing himself. "Third year, Slytherin. Immobulus!" He fired his Aspen wand toward the third shrub to the right.

Half-half. Okay.
But they have to wait for Jasmine first to put the dragon dung before they could water it. Hmm. Was there a step-by-step instruction as to how to fertilize and water a plant? He looked over his shoulder to look for Professor Bentley, but she seemed busy monitoring the others...so instead he turned to the older students.
"Err...question guys." he said as he stuck his finger up in the air. "Will it matter if we water the plant first before we put the dung? Does the effect of the dragon dung decrease if we add water after putting it?" Hmm. Let's see what these two know...

Okaaayyyyy... mixed reactions. Half the students seemed disturbed by the feeding activity, and half seemed to ... like it too much? At least there weren't any disasters yet and as far as she could tell most of the students were comfortable enough in the flesh eaters' presence. Some of the newbies looked particularly taken with the task, eyes on you Grayson and Maddison and of course her lioness, Candice.
Still the others were doing well too. If not as enthused by the experience.
But on that note, feeding time was about up, wouldn't want them getting indigestion or anything. Or... mmm... some of them were still not done.
"Alrighty, before we finish up here and move onto our next and last specimen for today, can I have a few of you handing out these last scraps, and could I have... the Ravenclaws and Gryffindors distributing a light sprinkle of dragons dung, the Slytherins and Hufflepuffs watering ... and I ask that those in third year and above, or anyone that is capable, to just immobolise the bigger shrubs whilst dung distribution occurs, thank yooooooop!" While she was giving these instructions, she'd summoned the two buckets of dung from the stores cupboard in the entrance of the greenhouse with a stack of small containers to use as scoops.
OOC: The lesson will continue in 19 hours. Interaction and team work is encouraged.
Poor Gryffindors and Ravenclaws. They needed to distribute dung. Silently cheering, Leah pulled out her wand and turned around, finding out with a jolt that there was a shrub right behind her. It scared her SO much that she had to stifle a shout.
Still, the second year backed off a bit before pointing her wand at the shrub and said, "Aguamenti". Aaand nope, she did not know how to immobilize shrubs. She tried to learn it by watching older students, but it was way to difficult for her.

Noticing Ethan raise up his finger, Cris listened to his question. "Good question, Ethan. Actually the proper way is to first add the fertilizer. then water the plant and then gently tap the soil to remove any air bubbles that may be trapped in the soil, " Cris replied in answer to Ethan's question, recalling what he had learned from his previous Herbology professor back in Durmstrang.
"If you first water and then fertilize, the fertilizer may not properly mix in with the compost. I mean you could use your fingers to mix it up, but you might end up messing with the plant's roots or if you're planting seeds, the water will cause the seeds to float up."
Cris hoped he made sense but more importantly, that he had been correct in his explanation of the process.

Next time, could they work with plants that only ate... like... sunlight?

The Hufflepuff grinned. He was always willing to help out enthusiastic kids in Herbology. "Whenever you're ready, just start spreading, yeah?"
SPOILER!!: Kyroh and Dima aka Ravendorables
MOAR FIRST YEARS. And this time it was two of the littlest Ravenclaws that Tobias already knew. He gave the both of them a little smile when they came over.
"Hey Kyroh. Hi Dima."
It hadn't been difficult to pick up on the fact that the whole meat thing was tricky for Dima at the very last. Toby could understand that, but he didn't want to make a big deal out of it.
"We won't always be dealing with Flesh-Eating plants," he informed the two boys, Dima in particular. "The other Greenhouses are all really interesting, and there's loads to learn in them."
Toby paused for a minute, as the bush started to move around again. He recast the spell and it frove immediately.
"Why don't you try watering this one. There should be watering cans somewhere around here if you don't know the Aguamenti or Aguamentispritz spell yet." Encouraging looks for these boys. Tobias wanted them to be just as enthusiastic about Herbology as he was.
Toby pointed his wand at the base of the plant, keeping an eye out to make sure it didn't start moving again. "Aguamentispritz."
A fine mist of water was conjured and immediately started to dampen the soil and fertiliser.
"No problem." Kyroh whispered back to his dorm mate. Though he didn't know why he was whispering. They were friends, and you had to look out for your friends right? So you had best believe Kyroh was looking out for you Dima!
Plus the dung smelt gross, but compared to other stuff they had to do in their short time in the castle, it wasn't too bad.
Looking up at Toby, Kyroh shook his head at the Hufflepuff's suggestion. "We're Ravenclaws." Kyroh stated, as though it were not the most obvious thing in the world. "Professor Bentley said that Ravenclaws and Gryffindors deal with dung, and you Hufflepuffs and Slytherins get to water." See he HAD been listening. So well. "I think we should listen to her, just 'cause she said there's still lots of time in the school year to feed bad students to the plants." He had asked her, she had said it. It was the truth.
SPOILER!!: Candice!

Candice had rolled her eyes, and Kyroh had no clue why. Cause, it was just his thoughts okay. The boy shifted slightly uncomfortable as he took his eyes away from the immobilized plant. Maybe he was bothering her? "Premium meat. Like the stuff that's like 20 galleons." Duh. "But the school can't afford to spend all that money on plants so instead they get dead rats." Kyroh....didn't get the joke. He just stared. First the Groundskeeper ate kids. And now apparently there was a chance to be eaten by flesh eating plants in Herbology.
Hogwarts didn't seem that safe.
"I'm one of the kids who do listen." Kyroh stated. Just in case she was looking for those non-listeners you know?
It seemed as thought things were sinking in... though his response seemed a little cautious.
"I'm a good judge of character," she affirmed with a nod. He was fine.

This one didn't seem convinced. That was a shame, a real pity. There was so much promise otherwise. "Of course," she replied slowly, "I'm not going to force you to do something you're not comfortable with." Because that's how people died... at least where flesh eaters were concerned. A lot could go wrong. Confidence was key.

As she was making her rounds, attempting to watch all the students and make sure they all lived and would make it out in one piece, she cottoned onto the tail end of a conversation between Cris and Ethan...
Uuuhhhhh....
The Hufflepuff was perhaps over-complicating things, definitely over-complicating.
"Cris is right, it's usually it's fertiliser followed by water, but these guys are hardy things and do well with looking after themselves, so it doesn't matter a great deal," she added.
But alas. Time was of the essence! So it was high time they all rallied and moved on.
"Gather yourselves! We're moving on!" Seren called out, indicating for them to drop what they were doing and to follow. The buckets and containers would be dealt with later. "Come come come! Keep up Petals!" she continued as she turned and motioned for them to follow.
The larger bushes and the trees in the greenhouse were still sedated as they passed by, though a few wiggled or groaned in their direction.
They came to a stop just short of a group of trees, near the back exit of the greenhouse, where a snargaluff guarded the door. Of course, this wasn't the specimen they would be examining today. No. Not today. Today, they would be looking at a fir tree, only it was barely a tree at just over a foot in height.
"Flesh eaters are amazing flora, and this specimen is no different... in fact, some of you may be fairly familiar with it already," she started her introduction, "it's a Flesh-Eating Fir... and what's remarkable about this tree, is the type of flesh it chooses to feed on. Can anyone hazard a guess as to what that might be?" Or was it less common and popular than she thought? Time would tell.

Moving on? No more dung? Okay then. She dropped the scoop in where she found it then followed her Head of House to near the back exit.
Flesh-Eating Fire? Oh she heard about that particular plants. She had seen the picture but this one was rather small. Maybe its still a baby Fir? How cuteeeeeee. Moving on! Leah put her wand back inside her pockets and followed the group. She looked around curiously during the walk, watching some plants wiggling and stretching. She nearly slammed into the person in front of her as they came to a halt. Was that the plant they were learning? The snargaluff or something? Eh no. It was a short tree. Thank goodness. It did not look very frightening... yet.
The second year frowned at the professor's words. The type of flesh it chooses to feed one is remarkable. She raised up her hand. "I hazard a guess as to animals!" It was a guess, after all.

SPOILER!!: Ethan
"Yes ma'am!" Ethan positioned himself a few feet away from the Chokeberry bush and watched as Jasmine immobilized the plant. The Slytherin raised his wand to water it, but then stopped half-way as Cris started talking.
Half-half.
Jasmine was so focused on immobilizing the chokeberry bush that she forgot to fertilize it before asking the guys to water it. The thought never crossed her mind until Ethan asked his question. "Sorry guys, you're right. I don't know what I was thinking." Gathering up more dung, Jasmine spread it carefully around the bush. Once she was finished, she apologized again. "Sorry about that. It's all ready for you now."
The Professor came by to answer Ethan's question about the proper order for doing things. Then she announced that they would be moving on to the next part of the lesson. Gathering her things, Jasmine followed the group toward the back of the greenhouse. They would be learning about the Flesh-Eating Fir? Jasmine didn't know what kind of flesh the tree preferred, but it must be unusual based on the way that the question was posed. She would have to think about that one.

SPOILER!!: Benny & Angel
Finishing up with his own plant, Benny heard the two Gryffindor sisters nearby trying to work with what they could since they were limited as first years. Moving closer, the third year figured he could at least offer to help them with the spellwork.
Angel, it appeared, had already gotten assistance from other another student so that left Aubrey on her own technically even as the siblings worked together. "Hey....need some help Aubrey?" he asked, his wand already back out. "Immobulus," he cast at the nearest plant not already helped.
Hehe… It looked like Benny had fallen victim to the old switcheroo. AJ tried to compose her face as to not give it away. It was fun sharing the same face sometimes. She saw that her sister went with it and talked to him as AJ. The only thing that she wouldn’t have done was to call him Benny because Aubrey NEVER called him that. He only hoped that Benjamin didn’t notice.
SPOILER!!: Adi
It was Adi's turn to laugh out aloud. "That's perfect!'' he said and wondered why he had never head anyone describe the idiotic subject as that. But before he could say anything further, Bentley spoke up. Okay, Puffers for the watering! Got it!
"Sounds good,'' Adi said with a nod as he retrieved his wand. So how about we start with this big guy here?'' He pointed to one that would definitely need immobilizing. "Immobulus!'' The plant froze. "I love sports!'' he continued as he waited for AJ to fertilize the roots. "Cricket, especially. What are you into?''
Adi and AJ made a good team, and she actually enjoyed working with him. She watched as he used wand and immobilized the plants. ”You’ve got to teach me that sometime. She couldn’t wait to be able to use her magic stick and actually know what she was doing with it.
Oh, he loved sports! That was a major plus in her book. ” I love all sports really, but baseball is my favorite!” It was then that Bentley spoke so she had to shut up and listen now.
SPOILER!!: Professor
OOC: Lesson will continue in approx 24 hours. Please don't edit your answers.
They were moving on to bigger and better things. She ended all conversations and followed Bentley. She looked at the tree that the professor was talking about and was a bit let down thinking that they would be dealing with something cooler. Then, flesh eater came out of Bentley’s mouth and Aubrey was all ears once again.
Hmmm… She didn’t really know the answer, but she was going to give it a go anyways. AJ raised her hand. ”I think that they prefer human flesh, but considering you don’t want us to die anything their second choice would be fluffy little bunny rabbits.” Hey, the others liked rats, and really how different were rabbits from them?
Angel smiled at the Professor as she raised her hand. "Professor don't they eat other plants?" Angel had heard of plants like them and she totally hated it but it was life and she knew if she wanted to study about plants when she was older, she would have to learn about them all.
Angel looked at the girl that had spoken to her as well but she couldn't reply now because the Professor was calling though she did give her a smile and decided she would speak to her when she got the chance.
Before Toby could even start to respond to Kyroh, Professor Bentley was calling them along. He settled with a smile to the two boys and nodded his head towards the next plants.
"C'mon," the Hufflepuff said, hoping to get them both to group up before the others, because they were really quite small and it would help if they stood nearer the front. See, Toby understood that. He was still a bit shorter than he'd have liked to be.
Oooh, a question. A question Toby knew the answer to. He stuck his hand in the air.
"They eat other trees. Like other flesh-eating trees." And probably other Firs... now there was a thought. Toby's hand stretched a little higher into the air. "Professor, if it can't find any other flesh-eating trees or plants, would it then resort to............. eating itself? Or would it go for non-flesh-eating trees as its next resort? Or flesh that isn't from trees?" Endless possibilities, man.

Thankfully Aubrey was fine with his assistance, something Ben had briefly wondered about, They hadn't exactly spent that much time together, at least not as much as he and Angel. It did seem they both loved plants though. He didn't think anything on the use of Benny, the nickname easily circulated thanks to Adi. And why wouldn't one sister use it when another one did just fine.
"You're welcome," he said with a nod, putting away his wand now that they were done.

SPOILER!!: Ethan and Cris

So they were moving on and Benny was quick to follow. The students momentarily leaving behind what they had previously been working on in search of bigger and better things. The flesh-eating fir that Professor Bentley was showing and speaking on didn't exactly fit the bill. The third year listened to what was being said wondering if any of the suggestions were the true response.
Other trees? Human? Rabbits? Plants?
For all he knew, any and all was the truth. The human response nearly forcing a shiver as it was certainly bigger then the other plants that posed a possible danger. But then he had another idea. "Does it go for reptiles, or stuff with scaly flesh?"
There's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for| LOTR|Whovian|Sherlock Fan
Cris waited and then it was his turn to answer. Raising up his hand, he shared what he knew.
"Professor, most of us tend to assume that flesh refers to the meat off humans or creatures. For the Flesh Eating Fir, that is not the case. To the tree, flesh refers to the fleshy parts of other trees. This fir is somewhat like our guardian flesh eating tree because it feeds on the other dangerous flesh eating trees."
Then an idea popped into Cris head, and he raised his hand to ask a question.
"Professor, could it be possible that they got their Flesh Eating name from the fact that they actually feed on Flesh Eating trees?" Cris asked Professor Bentley.
Kate watched the boy (Cutty) water the bush and make a mental note to remember that spell. Being able to conjure a stream of water was probably one of the most useful things she could learn here. "I'm Kate Pearce," she said. Did she have to say her house and year? Surely it was pretty obvious. She was so short, she couldn't really be anything other than a first year...
Oh! Moving on? Great, no more dung! Kate set down her fertilizer scoop and followed the professor through the greenhouse until they reached… an itty bitty tree? Aww, it was so cute! But apparently still a flesh eater. So cute and dangerous.
What kind of flesh did it eat? Kate had no idea, but she could totally guess. Hand going up, Kate made a suggestion. "Does it eat birds?" That would make sense, it being a tree and all.

"Sure. I can teach you all the basic spells,'' Adi said as he happily surveyed his handiwork. Being able to get spells right on the first try was awesome! And if he could help AJ with that, he won't mind. Ah. Baseball. Cool! But he couldn't say anything more for Bentley spoke again.

Awww, it was time for them to stop looking after the plants. Oh well, Lux was curious to see what they would be learning about next.
Joining the group where Professor Bentley was, she got a good look at the little for tree. Okay, she had never heard of this specific tree before; either she was living under a rock, or the Professor was wrong in how well known she thought they were. Raising her hand, Lux ventured a guess as to why they were given that name. "Do they eat other flesh-eating plants or trees?" Clearly its diet wouldn't be the same as the other flesh-eating plants shown today, since it would be pointless to go over the same things twice.

He got a nod as well and then Penelope continued carefully sprinkling the dragon dung around the plant and making sure she didn't step in it or on the places Grayson was pouring the water.
How long? Hmm...good question, she had no idea. Or, well, SOME idea but nothing specific. Should she know this? Probably. Would this come up on her NEWTs?? Oh Merlin.
"Um...I guess enough that the dirt around it is wet but not TOO wet. We don't want to over-water it or drown it or anything." Surely it wouldn't get that extreme since he didn't appear to be overdoing it with the water, but just in case. Bentley would not be pleased if that happened.
And since he'd asked a question, she figured she could ask hers as well. "How much d'you think a light sprinkling is?" She'd sprinkled down a decent amount already, but was that enough? Should she add more? She couldn't decide.
This one was weird, in a sense. He couldn't tell if she was being sassy or just plain obvious. Maybe both. MAYBE. Keep it cool, Grayson, keep it cool. "Just didn't want an argument, 'tis all," he said, shrugging his shoulders. Was that keeping it cool?
Whatever.
The fourteen year old continued to water the plant, making sure that the soft trickle fell on the fertiliser afterwards. Oh look. Older Penelope was smart. "Uh huh. I guess you're right," he said, before casting a furtive glance over at Bentley, "She doesn't look like she'd be pleased if we killed a plant." The idea of killing a flesh-eating plant sounded epic but, on the flip side, that meant more namby pamby plants in the world.
No. Just no.
A light sprinkling? Er, shoot. Did he know? No. He wasn't a Herbology expert. All the knew was that these flesh eating plants were great. "Er," Merlin, she was going to think he was DUMB. Grayson cast his eyes over towards the amount of dung she had sprinkled onto the plant, "No idea but I think that much should be fine. Isn't there such a thing as too much fertiliser?" Something about polluting water or whatever. "Yeah, I think that should be good enough for the plant to grow big and dangerous." Could she tell that he was happy about that?

Just in time, too, because Bentley was speaking again. Casting a small "Finite!" to stop the flow of water, the Slytherin gave the Gryffindor two thumbs up before turning his attention to the Professor. Er, did she just call them PETALS?! What?! Was this normal? Couldn't she call them something a bit more, er, EPIC?
Stowing his wand away, Grayson followed the Professor and the group over towards........ a group of trees. Flesh Eating Fir? And they ate something along the lines of flesh, but there was something remarkable about these. Those were his only clues. Er. Okay, he was going to guess, then. The hand went up in the air and he said, "They don't eat insects, I bet. Do they only eat mammals?"
And wasn't eating other trees cannibalism? Was this tree cannibalistic?
Kace heard the professor ask to continue on with the lesson. He perked his head up and he followed the other students to the front. He heard the professor talking about Flesh Eating Fir. Hmm...she asked what they could eat. Student's said insects but Kace thought logically that insects didn't really have flesh. They only had shells and crunchness. He heard Grayson's answer and agreed with him.
"Professor i agree with Grayson.." he said raising his hand. "I think they only eat mammals because they are the ones with the flesh? Or could they really eat humans?" he asked just being curious.

Marigold raised an eyebrow at Lex. The immobilized tree was kinda for firsties and stuff, but whatever. She turned her face back to the professor and followed her to a flesh eating fir. She raised her hand while watching the tree warily. "Human flesh." Ominous answer, but they were ominous plants.

So working with dung wasn't exactly glamorous but it WAS cool to be so close to these plants. Maddie found that she was fascinated by the way they looked and what they were capable of. She wanted to draw them and observe how they moved too but she knew that being close to them when they were active could be dangerous. WHY was it that the dangerous things were the most interesting, anyway? It was something she was VERY curious to know.
They were moving on now, though. Maddie set any remaining dung back in the bucket and placed the container she'd used as a scoop aside. Then she hurried over to where Bentley was.
She'd never seen a Flesh-Eating Fir before but it WAS pretty neat. Even more neat was the fact that apparently they fed on other trees! LIKE the cannibals of the tree world! And yes, Maddie was assuming that the Toby boy was correct cause he seemed awful sure of the information and he responded with a statement, no questioning in his tone. If he DID turn out to be wrong, the small brunette would be sort of disappointed so brown eyes flicked from him to Bentley awaiting confirmation. Did they REALLY feed on the flesh from other trees? DID THEY?
