When not in use for classes, several of the greenhouses that are located on the school grounds are open for private and independent research and study. In fact, this is highly encouraged.
Within the unlocked doors of the greenhouses you will find rows and rows of plants. The greenhouses contain a wide variety of plants - both magical and mundane. Want to practice your pruning skills? Why not practice on the Abyssinian Shrivelfig of a Flutterby Bush? Or perhaps you want to harvest some Puffapod seeds- just don’t drop them! -- unless you want to of course.
The store cupboards are stocked with all the tools and materials you could possibly need. Trowels, buckets, pegs, twine, fertiliser, spare gloves, spare work robes and a selection of mundane seed and bulbs. If you borrow something, be sure you return it.
Remember Professor Bentley likes to take regular strolls through the greenhouse to check on things. So make sure you wear your protective gear and behave yourselves accordingly.

NOTE: This is not an exhaustive list, it's just to give you an idea of what can be found in each greenhouse. Greenhouse 8 is restricted, locked and enchanted and may only be accessed with Professor Bentley. Any attempt to post that your charrie has broken in, will result in your posts being deleted.

Jasmine nodded in agreement. They could re-pot the plants that Cris had indicated. She stood by with the potting soil, ready to fill the pot once Cris had placed the plant inside. Once he had finished, Jasmine poured soil around the plant, taking care to cover the roots. Once the plant was secure, they could move on to the next one.
Jasmine made sure that she had easy access to the sedating spray and her wand, just in case one of the plants decided to wake up. "Shall we move on to the next one?", she asked Cris.

"Even though you keep you saying you don't, I still think that you have a green thumb. You dealt with that plant so efficiently. Yes on to the next," he nodded his approval as he moved over to the next plant and began removing the soil around it before grabbing hold of the main stem with one hand and giving it a gentle tug, while trying to remove the roots from the soil without causing any damage to the root ball.
Lifting it gently up, he moved it quickly to the pot Jasmine had prepared and placed it in there. "It's all yours," he smiled at her before moving on to the next plant, cautiously poking its flower head to make sure it was still sedated.

Jasmine looked at Cris and smiled. "Thanks. I just do the best that I can and hope that I don't kill anything.". She watched as Cris worked on the next plant. He moved swiftly, but carefully and she appreciated his skill. Doing her job, Jasmine added soil to the pot until it was sufficiently full. She took a moment to pat the soil until it was firm and the plant was secure. "This one's ready to go", Jasmine said to Cris. "Next".
Then she thought about the best way to transport the plants they were working on. "Do you think these will fit in the wheelbarrow or do we need to levitate them to the temporary greenhouse?"

Cris chuckled at Jasmine's comment. "Believe me I'm more prone to killing anything than you are. You're gentle and patient. I'm brash and reckless, sometimes. Maybe that's why we make such a good team. You help keep me rooted...no pun intended," Cris laughed as he raised up the plant he had removed from the soil, holding up its roots to her.
At her question, he looked down at the wheelbarrow."Now that's a very good question? I think we may be able to squeeze one more pot in but it may make the wheelbarrow hard to levitate. Maybe we should bring these plants up to the temporary greenhouse. One of us can levitate it and the other can keep watch to make sure they don't make an untimely wake up call. What do you think?" Cris gave Jasmine the option.
He had another idea too but decided to try it on the next go around. Making the wheelbarrow move on its own. Sander had taught him that neat trick.

It’s time to sled back to the greenhouses!” The boy nudged his friend and went towards the entrance of the castle with their sled. Ethan sat up front and waited for Simon to get settled.
“Hold on tight, Watson! We’re gonna go down fffffffaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssssssssttttttttttttttttttttt!!!!!!!”
WOOOOSSSSSHHHH.
Was Simon holding tight? They were rather going fast downhill with their sled. They’ll be in the greenhouses again in less than a minute. They’re awesome. And all you lot should envy them Slytherins. Hehehehe. Who said you can't have fun while doing chores, eh?
"Not really, but it would be pretty awesome though. Do you want to see one" he asked, returning a curious glance at his friend. It would be really cool to see one, but frightening at the same time. This exact combination always seemed to lure the young Slytherin into wanting to know more about a specific object, creature, or person. Simon nodded and gave his friend a smile. Thank Fawkes that they weren't going to be attacked in their sleep. Then Ethan was peering into his ears. Uh.. Okay, Holmes. What's happened to you? Has the pollen from the plants affected you...? thought Simon. However, soon he was laughing with Ethan when he realized that his mate was just being silly.
After unloading the plants, they made their way back down to the greenhouse. Instead of walking, they were sledding. Simon closed his eyes briefly. The hill was so steep! Oh Merlin. This was a bad, bad, bad idea. Why had he ever agreed to such an idea? He gripped onto the sled tighter, holding on for dear life. They started speeding up rapidly. He opened his eyes slightly and then kept them open for the remainder of the time. "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAH!" he yelled as a bright grin appeared on his lips.
Once they made it to the bottom and we're walking back into the Greenhouse to look for Coop, Simon grinned. "That. WAS. AMAZING. We have to do that again, okay?" he said as he led the way back in to find Coop. "Coop? Hello? We're back!"

Instead of finding the little eagle, he found another little Ravenclaw with Zander. “KYROH!” Well, he can’t remember if they were introduced formally already, but he’s seen the little guy in all the classes. “Oh hey there, Zander!” Ethan gave him a salute in acknowledgment. “You guys want to have some fuuuuuuun?” Like…legit fun? Maybe they should ask Professor Bentley to join them too?
That’ll be awesome. Really.

Kyroh took a deep breath and drew his wand. It would probably be best to cast the spell now before they even tried to head outside. But the idea of using the new spell for something so important made him sort of hesitant. Walking over to the levitated aquariums, Kyroh stood on his tipy-toes so he could point his wand IN the water. "Vent-....Ventus" Kyroh declared a warm gust exiting his wand at the second try of the spell. THAT WAS EASIER THAN HE THOUGHT! The first year looked up at the Gryffindor, smile spanning from ear to ear. "Told you I was ready!" He moved along, repeating the spell with each aquarium, and THEN going back down the line once more for extra protection. Too hot was probably better than too cold after all.
"Let's go! I'll lead us!" Wand still out Kyroh ran over to the greenhouse doors and pushed it open.

He hadn't expected someone to be on the other side of the door. Kyroh blinked. "COOL SLYTHERIN GUY ETHAN!"The first year yelled right back. Riggght back. Right in his face. It was a good thing he was shorter than him.
Kyroh was sure he hadn't said more than five words to the guy but it was hard to forget someone that was cool. And that had a skateboard. That was really hard to forget.

“OHHEYHIKYROH!” Ethan shouted back. Why are they shouting? Oh, yes, maybe it’s from the adrenaline rush he’s having right now? Yes, yes. Sledding at that speed was…AWESOME. He didn’t mind the little kid shouting in his face though, he’s actually cool with it hearing that Kyroh said COOL GUY. He’s cool, okay? Because Kyroh said so.
And yes. He forgot about the skateboard. Sorry little kid, but he’s here NOW, and he’s offering you lot some FUN.
“Calm down, my young friend. We’re here to save the plants too like it’s no one’s business! BUT! Who said we can’t have fun while doing it, yeah? And besides, you guys need some help…pulling those up in the castle.” he said pointing at the stuff that they are about to move. Would be better really to have the winged horses bring the whole greenhouse inside the castle though, but with this weather, he reckon the creatures won’t be up for it. “That’s why Simon,” he said as he pointed to his friend, “and I came up with the idea of sledding. We pull those plants up towards the castle, then sled back down here. We need to be speedy anyway.” Nods…nods for everyone. “So! Are you and Zander game?” It’ll be fun!

Zander smiled warmly at the enthusiastic little ravenclaw. They'd make a good team. He could just feel it. With Kyroh's enthusiasm and Zander's determination to help Professor Bentley (insert deep inhales and loving sighs), they were sure to restore these aquariums back to health and to a warm home!
Though the Ravenclaw said he was "so ready to go", Zander noticed a little hesitation as he pulled out his wand. Did Kyroh ever do the ventus spell before? AH HE GOT IT! In only two goes! Zander gave the boy a thumbs up, wow he was a fast learner.
"We're going to save the plants in no time!" The Gryffindor watched as Kyroh took the lead. He was a funny little guy, that one. With wand pointing the plants as he went, Zander followed Kyroh right out of the Greenhouse.

Zander stopped rather abruptly, but luckily kept his wand pointed at the plants. PHEW. They were okay. No harm done. It's all good. Ravenclaw Kyroh what is the meaning of this stop!?
Oh. Ethan? Zander looked away from the precious plants and caught glimpse of the salute. Hehe. He liked the salutes that Ethan always did. It was cool. Zander returned the salute, but felt kind of silly. No, it wasn't the same as when Ethan did it. "Hey Ethan," Zander liked that kid. Yep.
Wanna have some fun? YEAH! Zander smiled and nodded because fun is AWESOME! But then Kyroh started speaking and oh yeah. The plants. They couldn't just abandon Professor Bentley like that. She would be so sad. So, so sad. Could they have fun, while also being Bentley's heroes? "Yeah, what kind of fun are we talkin' about here?" he said with a grin.
But still, his focus was also on the plants that he had just levitating in the air. Because you know. He was here for the plants after all. And not just because he wanted to be around a certain Herbology Professor. Pft. No. That'd be ridiculous. Pft.

Zander's eyes grew bigger as Ethan explained. SEEE they could combine fun and being Bentley's heroes! They could do it!!! Zander had already interrupted "YES WE'RE IN!" Before Ethan could even finish asking. He didn't even consult with Kyroh yet... Oops. But it seemed pretty safe. And if they had already done it once...
Zander lowered his wand carefully and made sure the plants made it to the ground safely. "I mean... Kyroh? Would that be cool with you?" He did have a duty to his partner. "It'd probably go by a lot faster this way! And you could still use the ventus charm if you want?" Zander was actually getting pretty excited! He had never gone sledding before. And even though the idea totally freaked him out it did seem like fun. And you know, if Simon had done it then so could he!
Because yep. Zander trusted Simon. So if Simon was cool with it, then Zander would be too. And Ethan was pretty trustworthy... Right?

They were working away... like little worker bees... saving the future of the greenhouses, almost as if they themselves were pollinating. Seren too continued to work for some time in greenhouse eight, tending to the bigger tree varieties, shrinking them and sticking them into the coat of her pocket. They were so cute when they were small... which got her thinking...
....
Nevertheless, it was time to move things along and wrap up.
"Excellent work everyone, I think we can give the remaining greenhouses a quick sweep and then call it a day... lest we all lose our toes." She could barely feel her own, perhaps they oughtn't be out for so long. Whoops.

While Lucy was making her way toward the remaining greenhouses she remembered a spell that she had seen and that evoked some flames inside a jar .. as she wanted to know how to do it !

Jasmine couldnt help but laugh at Cris. Brash and reckless? She had not ever seen that side of Cris. She had seen kind and gentle, but if brash and reckless worked for him....who was she to argue?
As Cris removed the plant and held it up, Jasmine poured a little soil into the pot. "Go ahead and put it in the pot. I'll fill it up once you do." As for how to get the plants to the Greenhouse, Cris had a good idea. "Works for me", she said. "Which would you prefer to do, levitate or protect?"
Just then, Jasmine heard Professor Bentley say that they needed to start wrapping things up. "We'd better hurry up and get these plants delivered. Then we can come back and see if there are any others that need to be taken." Jasmine quickly poured soil into the pot so the plant could be added to the wheelbarrow.

Maybe they should ask Professor Bentley to join them too?

Kyroh took a deep breath and drew his wand. It would probably be best to cast the spell now before they even tried to head outside. But the idea of using the new spell for something so important made him sort of hesitant. Walking over to the levitated aquariums, Kyroh stood on his tipy-toes so he could point his wand IN the water. "Vent-....Ventus" Kyroh declared a warm gust exiting his wand at the second try of the spell. THAT WAS EASIER THAN HE THOUGHT! The first year looked up at the Gryffindor, smile spanning from ear to ear. "Told you I was ready!" He moved along, repeating the spell with each aquarium, and THEN going back down the line once more for extra protection. Too hot was probably better than too cold after all.
"Let's go! I'll lead us!" Wand still out Kyroh ran over to the greenhouse doors and pushed it open.
He hadn't expected someone to be on the other side of the door. Kyroh blinked. "COOL SLYTHERIN GUY ETHAN!"The first year yelled right back. Riggght back. Right in his face. It was a good thing he was shorter than him.
Kyroh was sure he hadn't said more than five words to the guy but it was hard to forget someone that was cool. And that had a skateboard. That was really hard to forget.
ALSO....someone who broke promises.
So maybe he was not so cool? "But we are saving the life of precious aquatic plants." JUST LOOK HOW PRECIOUS THEY WERE! So very precious. More important than fun!!!!.... "....What kind of fun?"

Maddie was freezing her fingers off over here, seriously. And okay, it wasn't THAT bad but she was really rather delicate deep deep deeeeep down on the inside. What she REALLY wanted was blankets and the fire and a big cup of hot chocolate with extra extra marshmallows. The LITTLE kind, not the BIG kind. The BIG kind made it hard to fit in an adequate amount and it sucked up the hot chocolate which WASN'T good. And ALL of this was going through her head as she continued potting those plants that were clinging to life.
She worked carefully and quietly as Simon and Skateboard boy were no where to be seen and she didn't have TOO many other people to chat with at the moment. Probably better that way, honestly. Chattering teeth didn't make chatting easy. JUST saying.
Just as she was thinking she'd need to find something ELSE to occupy her time, she heard someone calling her by her nickname (the PROPER one, NOT chicken Coop). "Hey, over here!" Except maybe she'd just head over to Simon and Ethan since movement would probably help warm her up a little.
Wandering over to the group of boys that had gathered (because apparently she was destined to hang out with boys...where WAS Candice, anyway?), the small brunette BEAMED at Kyroh and then listened carefully to Ethan and Simon's idea. She DID like the idea of sledding but they were meant to be sweeping now, did he know?
"Can we sweep and THEN sled? Does anyone know how to make a broom sweep on its OWN? That'd be cool."

Finally, Maddie was the voice of reason. Simon nodded in agreement. "Okay, I also think a quick sweep is in order before we leave the Greenhouse. However, I'd suggest for that some of us place the plants on the sled and while the others sweep. That way we'll get it done quicker. Then we can go sledding after we bring up the last plants. What do you guys think? I'll start sweeping," he asked, glancing around the group. It seemed like a good idea to him.
He paused, remembering that ickle Maddie Coop has asked if they knew how to make a broomstick just on its own. Merlin, Simon didn't know if that was possible. "I'm not sure if that's possible but we can always call them towards us," he pulled out his wand and used the summoning charm, "Accio broomstick!" A broomstick floated towards him and then he grabbed it. He started sweeping.

Fun yeah? Kyroh's smile grew. It DID make more sense to carry the water plants on the sled! That way the would move faster! His head turned to the other Slytherin who was smiling at him and the Claw waved. "HI SIMON!" Because Ethan had made yelling a thing and he couldn't stop it now.
He looked from Grayson and Zander before nodding. "That would be super cool with me! I like fun!" Heh. What a good sidekick he had too! Checking if he was on board. Course he was though because FUN and it was FASTER and the water plants wouldn't FREEZE.
OH LOOK BODDIE HI!!! Kyroh waved excitedly. Under normal circumstances he would have even given her a HUG. But unfortunately no hug right now. They had to finish with these plants then then have FUN. But you could get a hug later, okay Maddie? Okay?
Since after all the only way to make the girl like hugs was to give her MORE of them, that's what Kyroh figured.
As for sweeping? Uh.....why? Sweeping wasn't fun. Kyroh just watched, blinking and then turned back to the plants to cast a few more rounds of ventus.

That was the last of it? They were sweeping now? Alright, was there a spell for this? She couldn't remember. They could just vanish all the rubbish. No one knew where it went after but it didn't usually bother them before. Though she supposed if the Professor wanted it done with magic she'd have said so....the Gryffindor accio-ed herself a broom from the supply closet and got to sweeping.
It worked better this way. Movement produced heat which was exactly what she needed after the cold broke all the windows and proceeded to seep in like it owned the place.
The faster she swept was the warmer she felt and the sooner she was getting things done so really this was a continuous win for her. She got under the now empty tables where plants used to be, finding everything looked a lot clearer now. Something you'd expect after emptying a Greenhouse.
Could they arrange for the House Elves to have hot chocolate ready in the Great Hall for when they got back? No matter how many heating charms and brooms they swept, it was still cold.
Perfect weather for hot chocolate--though Lex had it in any weather....minor detail.

Time was already up? AJ looked up from what she was doing and realized that they actually had done a lot of work in such a short amount of time. Whew. She should be sweating considering all that she has personally done, but alas, the cold!
She quickly finished working on the re-potting of the few plants that had been immbolized by the older student. More slinging dirt commenced. This was actually kind of nice, minus the whole cold thing of course.
One plant was done, and then the next. She stood up and announced her progress. "These are done." Did anybody want to carry them for her? The trip was not very much fun considering the whole not being able to levitate thing.

She finished re-potting the last plants in the area where she was working. As she was looking for more plants that needed to be re-potted, she heard Professor Bentley say that they should be finishing up. What was that she had said about losing toes? Her fingers and toes were freezing. After the SNAC meeting, Penelope really didn't want to get frost bite or lose her toes.
The plants she had re-potted needed to be moved. Penelope would not be able to move all of the plants by herself. "Can anyone help me with these plants? They are ready to be moved," she said to anyone who might be able to move a few plants.
While she was waiting for some people to help move the plants, Penelope re-potted a few more plants. Professor Bentley had said to give the remaining greenhouses a quick sweep. Penelope decided that this should be interpreted as moving whatever remaining plants they could, not actually cleaning the floor. Penelope moved whatever plants that she could easily move in some of the other greenhouses. It looked like some people were sweeping the floor. That was one way to interpret the sweeping thing. She didn't stop to question anyone who was sweeping. There were plants that she needed to save.
Penelope levitated all of the plants she had re-potted that needed to be moved over to one area, so it would be easier to move all of them. She had not stopped her work to move these plants and many of them needed to be moved. The increasing number of plants would not be easy to move. Maybe some of the people who were sweeping with brooms could help move the plants. Sweeping the floor of the greenhouse probably wouldn't help much anyway. Looking at the plants, Penelope could see that she would need more help with moving them than she had thought she would need. There are more plants ready to be moved!"
All she had to do now was move the plants. Shrinking the plants might be better than levitating them because there were so many plants to be moved. She would have to learn the hot air charm to keep the plants warm.

Cris smiled at how Jasmine had turned the question back on to him. "I'll levitate if you want...and you're right I guess we'd better make a move if we want to return and move the rest out,"Cris nodded in agreement as he pointed his wand at the wheelbarrow and said,"Mobiliarbus."
As the wheelbarrow began to rise, Cris directed it along the rows of plants and out Greenhouse Eight, glancing quickly over to Jasmine to make sure that she was following close behind with her trust spray bottle filled with the trusty sedating solution.

Progress was progress, and it seemed that they managed to salvage much of the contents of the greenhouses, not so much from the latter ones, but that was hardly surprising considering the weather. And on that note, it really was time to head back to the castle before anyone lost a limb to the frost and ice... Circe knew her toes could do with defrosting at this stage. A cup of tea by the fire in the staff room would do the trick.
Ushering out the last of the students with an appreciative smile and pack on the back, Seren left the greenhouses unlocked, but closed the doors. The elements had claimed the structures, but it had not claimed all of the lives within.
A solid effort from a solid team, she could not have done it without the students.
