When not in use for classes, several of the greenhouses that are located on the school grounds are open for private and independent research and study. In fact, this is highly encouraged.
Within the unlocked doors of the greenhouses you will find rows and rows of plants. The greenhouses contain a wide variety of plants - both magical and mundane. Want to practice your pruning skills? Why not practice on the Abyssinian Shrivelfig of a Flutterby Bush? Or perhaps you want to harvest some Puffapod seeds- just don’t drop them! -- unless you want to of course.
The store cupboards are stocked with all the tools and materials you could possibly need. Trowels, buckets, pegs, twine, fertiliser, spare gloves, spare work robes and a selection of mundane seed and bulbs. If you borrow something, be sure you return it.
Remember Professor Bentley likes to take regular strolls through the greenhouse to check on things. So make sure you wear your protective gear and behave yourselves accordingly.
SPOILER!!: Greenhouse Index
1 - VARIOUS including: toadstools, bubotubers, mimbulous mimbletonia
2 - VARIOUS including: creeping ivy (Wasima), fire seed bushes, venomous tentacular, screechsnap, polypody
3 - VARIOUS (largely floral) including: flutterby bushes, puffapods, angels trumpets, umbrella flowers, bouncing bulbs, snarfalumps, wiggenbush
4 - VARIOUS including: fanged geranium, piranha plants, bloodroot, chinese chomping cabbage, mixed herbs
5 - VARIOUS - ARID including: various cacti and grasses 6 - VARIOUS - AQUATIC including: gillyweed, sea lavender, sea cucumbers and coral
7 - VARIOUS - TROPICAL including: cobra lilies, albany pitcher, venus flytraps, poke weed and fire vine
8 - VARIOUS - RESTRICTED ACCESS: includes various flesh-eaters and various dangerous plants including snargallufs, midnight magnolia, dragon trees and mature mandrakes
NOTE: This is not an exhaustive list, it's just to give you an idea of what can be found in each greenhouse. Greenhouse 8 is restricted, locked and enchanted and may only be accessed with Professor Bentley. Any attempt to post that your charrie has broken in, will result in your posts being deleted.

They get to exchange ideas and theories and whatnot. “…if it’s the Cold Ones…then…why are they targeting Hogwarts?” Right? Why the students? Or…the staff? Ethan’s eyes widened, and paused for a second…then finished re-potting one of the plants. “…do you think the Cold Ones are after the arm that Professor Flamsteed showed us in Defence? Maybe…maybe the arm is some sort of…homing device for them?” Merlin. If that’s the case then they should destroy the arm pronto!
The third year glanced at Simon and copied his facial expression when his fellow snake looked like he was about to sneeze. “You all right, mate?” Really, he can’t afford one Simon Holden to be sick. Not when they are silently being attacked by dark forces that they can’t see.
Simon seems to be fine, and the third year watched and gave him a thumbs up after casting the Placement Charm on the said pot. Don’t you just love a Slytherin’s brilliance? Moving on, Ethan continued to inspect the room for plants that can be salvaged, and re-potted them on the huge pot Simon made.
#TeamHolmes is winning.
The Cold Ones did thrive in frigid weather. As soon as Ethan mentioned the point about whether or not the Cold Ones had powers over the weather. He bit his lip. His brain churned. These conversations were good with Ethan. They always propelled each other forward to consider other possibilities. That was a good point. They hadn't learnt about if the Cold Ones did have that power, but who knew? They didn't really understand how they were created properly so maybe they did have that power because they used to be witches and wizards. He paused. "Right. We don't know if they do for sure, but they were once witches and wizards. What if they retained some of their abilities?" he offered. Then what else could be causing the weather? Dementors? Simon didn't know the answer to Ethan's next suggestion but then when Ethan went further to explain the arm, Simon's blue eyes widened. OH Merlin. "Maybe... Maybe.. OH Merlin. Maybe we should go do some research on this ASAP." Or talk to the Professors.
"Yeah, I'm alright. It's just.." he began and then all of a sudden he sneezed under his arm. Achoooo! Eugh. He blinked a couple of times. "It's just allergies. Pollen." Simon Holden wasn't getting sick or was he? No. No. It was just allergies. He was healthy. He had his vitamins today. He'd been a good boy.
After potting up some more of the plants, he glanced over at Ethan. "Do you think we have enough room on the wooden sled for five more pots?"

Ethan nodded without looking at Simon as he heard his next words. “That’s a big factor. Them being witches and wizards.” The third year pulled one of the plants carefully and trodded back to the sled with the huge pot. But doing so…he paused. “Simon…Merlin, that just might be the answer to my question!” he exclaimed and hurriedly placed the plant on the pot. “Like what you said, the Cold Ones are Witches and Wizards, and they might be driving this weather up to make sure they’ll survive the trip here. They need the extra cold to survive!” Ethan blinked at his own theory and shook his head. “I might be over-thinking things, but…it all makes sense! Why would the Cold Ones come for us when they have all the ice and snow in their place of origin? They’re definitely after something!” The Slytherin shook his head and continued the task. “Yes…we need to research more about them. Maybe I could owl Mordred too and see what he knows.” and maybe they should talk to Professor Romanos about this?
Merlin. No sneezing! You can’t be sick Holden! Oh okay, pollens. “Er…right, I’ll take care of the flowers then.” He said as he gently pushed Simon away from it. Allergies can be deadly. And holy Fawkes, Simon can’t be in bed nursing a cold if the Cold Ones are out to get them. Nope.
Five more pots? “No problemo, sire!” Ethan got his wand out again and placed an Engorgement Charm on the sled. “Engorgio!...All righty. More space for five more pots…and a half.” With a nod, he tucked his wand away again and continued to re-pot the flowers trying his best not to think about their theory.

Arista had smiled at Professor Bentley returned her hug and was now doing the job that had been assigned to her, she gave a small nod to AJ who had come to her but she had gotten lost in potting the pots. A simple sure escaped her lips as she potted more of the plants into pots.
She didn't want the beds to freeze nope!! She looked down at her hands it was lucky that she wasn't a total girl and could at least get her hands nice and dirty! After finishing the bed she looked over she had too many pots...So now she had to bring them over to that room... Or she could just leave them here and let the stronger kids do it.
Deciding on the second option, Arista went to go pot some of the other beds.

As AJ was helping Arista with the potting of the plants, she was glad to find that distractions really did work with controlling your thoughts. She literally played every step in her head over, and over again. It was mindless work, and that was exactly what she needed. Too soon the professor called their attention and told them that they needed to move on.
Looking around she noticed that they really had gotten a lot of work done in a short amount of time. Of course her eyes scanned over Adi and he seemed to be doing just fine working with Benny. "C'mon." she said to Arista. That it if she wanted to go to the same greenhouse with her. All AJ knew was that she wasn't just going to stand around with just her thoughts to keep her occupied.
Following the professor out of the greenhouse, she was impressed with the fiery red X that appeared on it. "Wicked spell work professor." She quickly made her way into the next greenhouse. Busy work!

Maddie had just returned from delivering some potted plants to the new location when Bentley announced they were ready to move on to the other greenhouses. It seemed that the team work really WAS paying off, if that was the case. And deciding she wanted to go to Greenhouse 3, the small brunette adjusted her gloves and made her way there without a word. Focused, she was.
When she arrived, she noted that Skateboard boy and another boy she didn't know by name were already quite busy with whatever it was they were doing. She gave them a nod in greeting and then went to busy herself, decided that potting and then helping with the moving plants thing was the best course of action. Also, she wasn't great at levitating things and perhaps more people who WERE would arrive while she was potting plants, meaning she wouldn't have to worry about it.
Kneeling beside the flower bed with a few pots, she set to work, focusing on those plants that still looked alive and well. As for the ones that weren't so fortunate, sad looks for them.

Professor Bentley agreed that Jasmine could work on repotting the plants. Just then, she heard Cris ask for help with repotting so she went over to help with the task. "I'll help you", Jasmine said. Grabbing several of the pots he had brought over, she placed them nearby on the ground. Jasmine saw a group of plants that were not too frozen to be salvaged and went to work. She poured a little soil in each pot and then carefully removed the plants from the flower bed one by one. Setting each one into a pot, she added potting soil until the roots were properly covered. After she had filled several pots, Jasmine placed them in he wheelbarrow so they could be transported. Grabbing several more pots, she repeated the process until all of the salvageable plants in her flower bed had been taken care of. Catching Cris as he went by, Jasmine said, "These are all ready to go."
Jasmine heard the Professor announce that it was time to move on to the other Greenhouses. She looked around and saw the remaining plants that would have to be left behind. Sadly, Jasmine prepared to move on with her classmates.
When Jasmine arrived at Greenhouse Two, it appeared that more plants needed to be repotted there as well. She went looking for some empty pots so she could get to work with the other plants.

Lucy listened the instructions of the Professor and she made her way to the greenhouse two.
She smiled at her Professor and she said : " United we stand, divided we fall! "

Seiing that Cris was already at work, Jasmine went over to help him. He was talking with a younger Hufflepuff girl Leah who had smiled at her earlier. "I'm ready to help with repotting", Jasmine said. Turning to the other girl, she said, "Hi, I'm Jasmine".
Looking around, Jasmine surveyed the area. They had a lot of work to do and they were only on Greenhouse Two. Jasmine took some of the pots that Cris had removed from the wheelbarrow and set them on the ground near the plants. Then she went to get some potting soil so they could begin to transplant the plants.

Cris glanced over to see who had joined them and smiled to see that Jasmine had managed to find him again here in Greenhouse two. Yes the more help they could get, the faster these plants could be brought up to the castle.
He watched as she began transferring the plants from the flower bed to the pots and smiled. Despite her declaration that she didn't have a green thumb, he begged to differ. The way she transferred the plants over, showed that she knew what she was doing.
Cris turned his attention back to repotting the Puffapods. Grabbing another one by its main stem, Cris gave a gentle tug, lifted it up and quickly placed it into another empty pot. Filling the pot up with soil, Cris tapped down the soil and then called out.

Not really sure of the name of the plants she was dealing with AJ walked over to some that looked like they may pull through if they managed some attention and pronto. Deciding that she would stick with what she was doing before, she bent over and started to re-pot them. Maybe somebody would get the hint and take them to the temporary greenhouse for her.
Slinging dirt, she managed to transfer one plant into him new little home and covered it with dirt. One plant was down and ready to be transferred. Moving on to the next plant that looked the same as the first she did the same steps over. Now she had two whole plants ready to move. "Anybody want to take these?" she called out to no one in particular. She secretly wondered if Adi would appear and offer his help considering he had always been the one to come to her rescue before. Of course they were having...issues? Was that the right word? So he most likely wouldn't.
If nobody came to help before she was done with the re-potting of the third plant she would just carry them up herself. Of course she was not familiar with the levitation spell so it would only take her longer to accomplish this, and waste time that could be better spent.

His nose twitched. It was getting really itchy now. He was not going to scratch it. Scratching it only made the itch worse. He tried to focus on listening to what Ethan was saying at the moment as the two were going on about their theories. Simon blinked a couple of seconds when his friend exclaimed Merlin all of a sudden. Had Ethan realized something? He continued potting some of the wiggenbushes carefully but glanced at his friend. Simon nodded. "My thought's exactly." He continued to listen to his friend and nodded. When Ethan brought up the whole why would the Cold Ones need more ice if they have plenty in their origin, a bizarre thought crossed his mind. A very muggle thought. "Maybe Global Warming's finally taken its true effect?" he offered. "But that can't be the full extent to why they're here. Maybe someone has messed with them." Perhaps they were out to take revenge on them all? MERLIN'S BEARD. Or perhaps they were both overreacting. Simon didn't think they were. He nodded. "Yes, more research. Sure! Definitely send an owl to Mordred. Maybe Rugarth can tell if something has changed in the world?"
"I'm fine really. It's just allergies. It's not too serious," began Simon and then Ethan had pushed him away. Merlin. He figured that he should keep on placing the potted plants that Ethan had finished with on the sled. So he used the placement charm followed by the sticking charm. Almost done..
He looked up for a moment from what he was doing and saw a girl (Maddison) in the Greenhouse that they were working in. Oh hai stranger. He waved and gave her a quick smile. "Hey! Want to help us pot these plants? I'm Simon." The more people working, the better, right? Plus, they would get these plants to safety rather quickly.

Adi led the way to Greenhouse three, having just randomly decided to go there. He was sure Benny won't mind. The besties almost always agreed to each others suggestions, anyway.
Greenhouse three housed mostly the floral plants and there were a lot of those on beds so they would be in need of potting. "Let's get started, Benny,'' Adi said. he found a stack of pots and randomly set them down in front of a bed of flutterby bushes. Gloves on, Adi kneeled down and got to work.
Seeing as many were heading toward greenhouse two, Beverly skipped it and headed toward the third one. Glancing around she took in the damage and gulped. Her brother would be terribly upset if he were to ever see this. He loved Herbology stuff.
Switching her mittens for dragon-hide gloves, Beverly cursed. It was FREEZING. What in Merlin's name was going on? Was it some monster winter they were getting? Mother Nature needed to sort out her priorities.
Going over to some plants that looked better than the frozen, withered ones, Beverly grabbed a pot and stared digging the first plant out. Maybe working will help warm her up.

"I couldn't agree with you more," Seren nodded, flashing the Gryffindor a warm smile.
But on with the work. Again, Seren moved through the greenhouses, assisting where she could, and monitoring the progress. She'd already made a trip herself, but it seemed time to move things along.
"Well done everyone! This is splendid progress!" she called out to them, "Finish up what you're doing and move onto greenhouses four and five please!"
She had repeated the same message in both greenhouses, gesturing them to follow suit.
Of course, there was another task which required particular care. "Could I please have the student leaders and any willing sixth or seventh years with me please to help me with greenhouse eight!"

Penelope moved on to greenhouse two. They had saved as many plants as they could in greenhouse one.
She found some pots and began to re-pot the plants. Grabbing the roots of a plant, Penelope transferred the plant to the pot. Covering the roots with soil she said, "One plant ready for transport!" If no one took it, she would bring it up to the castle herself after she re-potted the next plant. Leaving the potted plant, Penelope started on the next plant.

"Because Hogwarts is awesome," said Simon. Silly Ethan, that was the obvious answer, wasn't it? He chuckled and then became rather serious. "I don't know. Maybe they've been tracking someone for a while and want to seek revenge on them?" He blinked his blue eyes when he heard that Ethan had encountered unicorns in Hogsmeade. "Wait. Unicorns in Hogsmeade? Merlin. Agatha and I encountered some centaurs a couple days ago down in the pathways." The magical creatures knew something was up. It was like when all the dolphin's left Earth in A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He began humming the song 'So Long and Thanks For All the Fish' before reigning his more serious side back in to the present. Simon shrugged. "I don't know. If only we could speak dragon." His shoulders slumped slightly.
And Ethan cared for Simon? Aww, shucks. do I smell an intellectual bromance? To complete the epic-ness, all they needed was Cutty to be there. "Thanks, Holmes, but I'm fine. I won't die if the Cold Ones come after us." He nodded and gave his friend a reassuring smile. Yeah, if a zombie apocalypse was about to go down, Simon wouldn't be one of the first to go. Nu-uh. He'd refuse politely. Then all of a sudden, Ethan called out to the Ravenclaw girl. Coop? he thought. That was a rather bizarre name. As Ethan explained to her what they would be doing, Simon gave her a thumbs up cause why not?
Welcome to team Holmes.
Professor Bentley appeared and asked for helpers in greenhouse 8. OOh! That was where danger lurked wasn't it? Simon desperately wanted to go too, but she had said only sixth and seventh years. Wonderful, he thought sarcastically as he placed the last pots on the sled.

Zander heard Professor Bentley's magical voice tell them to move on to the next Greenhouse and Zander followed right behind her! Thankfully he wouldn't have to work with the flesh eaters. AH, being a third year was really paying off right about now.
Now back to those plants. He spotted a few tiny ones sitting in the corner and ran up to them. Picking one out of the bunch he pointed his wand and "Mobiliarbus!" Now back to the Great Hall room? This was shaping up to be quite the workout.

“Meeeh. They could bug someone else.” Ethan chuckled as his mind wandered off. He never asked Mordred if this was actually…usual in Hogwarts? He just said it was a fun school, and it’s got a vast expanse of greenery. Things like that. He never mentioned the ‘dangers’ in this school. Or…or maybe their professors are just trolling them? Trolling that went wrong, because…well the Greenhouses are destroyed. Nah, maybe not. But it must be something. “Whoa, whoa. Wait. Centaurs? What did they tell you guys?” Like…why are they out and stuff? Unicorns and Centaurs don’t like human interaction much. “That’s strange. They don’t usually come for an audience with humans.” Ethan said as he crouched in front of the sled and inspected if the placement and sticking charms that Simon placed was successful. Yup. They’re ready to head out.
“Well, we need to get these up in the castle now.” He said as he got up and turned to Coop. “Simon and I will head up first and deliver the plants in the castle. I reckon it needs warmth, right away.” Ethan then turned to Simon. “Let’s go.” Clapping his friend’s back, he got hold of the rope and gestured Simon to grab the other end. “Will come back for you, Coop!”

Penelope finished up re-potting the last plants in greenhouse two. She made sure that all of the plants that had not already been brought to the castle were taken to the castle. It was time to move to greenhouse four.
In greenhouse four, Penelope continued to re-pot plants. She got a pot and dug up the first pant. Moving it to the pot and covering it with soil, she prepared the plant to be moved. When she was done, she repeated the process until she had a few plants ready to be moved.

Busy work!
Arista heard AJ this time and had dropped what she had been doing which was nothing because everyone beat her to the rest of the work. Just in time to because the Professor had just gave new instructions. She followed AJ out and said "This is kind of exciting!" She giggled being able to help out was cool specially because they were first years.
She nodded, AJ was right it was super cool spell work. As they reached the new greenhouse she looked back over at AJ, "Time to get to work!" She started to pot some of the plants from the other beds as well just like last time.

Ethan looked up to when Simon waved at someone and asked this person if she or he could help them. “Oh hey, Coop!” he said as he gave her a salute. Busy bee, that young Ravenclaw was. Oh and if she wanted to help, she could re-pot more plants and leave the transporting to them…or maybe… “You can also join us transporting Professor Bentley’s babies up in the castle too if you want.” And why wouldn’t she want it? “…then we can go sledding back here. We need to move from there to here quickly anyway.”
It’ll be cool. And if she don’t mind, she’ll be…Mrs. Hudson! Heh.

Simon and Skateboard Boy (aka Ethan, she knew) "Hey." Maddie waaaaaaved slightly soiled gloved fingers at the boys and then smiled a little. They were inviting her to team up with them which was nice. Not the type of Slytherin behavior she'd seen from other snakes which was interesting, actually. Did they WANT something from her and THAT'S why they were asking? She still had yet to figure them out fully so this was the PERFECT opportunity to investigate further. "I'd like to help, yeah."
Finishing up the last plant she was working on, the twelve year old moved the pots over to the boys and knelt down, opting to help pot the plants here so they could move more with that makeshift sled of theirs. "That was clever, making a sled." Magic would have been MORE clever but perhaps Skateboard Boy wasn't good at levitating things either.
Talk of centaurs peeked her interest but the small brunette stayed quiet. She'd talked to a centaur TOO though she hadn't yet told Dima and Kyroh and they would be the FIRST to know, sorry snakes. She was also busy planting so when Simon and Ethan got up to move the sled, she wasn't bothered.
"I'll be here!" And when they got back, they could load the plants she'd finished and head to another greenhouse, yeah? Yeah.

Jasmine was amazed at how quickly her classmates were working. It seemed like she had just begun repotting plants in Greenhouse Two when the Professor said that it was time to move on.
Jasmine tried to finish up with the last two plants that she had been working on by adding the last bits of potting soil to each one. She added those plants to the other group of completed plants and called out, "These are all ready to go". Brushing herself off, Jasmine removed her gloves and gathered her things. Not sure that she was ready to tackle Greenhouse Eight, she decided to head to Greenhouse Three. After giving it some thought, Jasmine changed her mind. The older students were needed to help with the more dangerous plants. She knew what she should do and before she could change her mind again, Jasmine said, "I'll help you in Number Eight Professor".
