When not in use for classes, several of the greenhouses that are located on the school grounds are open for private and independent research and study. In fact, this is highly encouraged.
Within the unlocked doors of the greenhouses you will find rows and rows of plants. The greenhouses contain a wide variety of plants - both magical and mundane. Want to practice your pruning skills? Why not practice on the Abyssinian Shrivelfig of a Flutterby Bush? Or perhaps you want to harvest some Puffapod seeds- just don’t drop them! -- unless you want to of course.
The store cupboards are stocked with all the tools and materials you could possibly need. Trowels, buckets, pegs, twine, fertiliser, spare gloves, spare work robes and a selection of mundane seed and bulbs. If you borrow something, be sure you return it.
Remember Professor Bentley likes to take regular strolls through the greenhouse to check on things. So make sure you wear your protective gear and behave yourselves accordingly.

Professor Botros Assignment : Gathering Tea leaves. Adi
There's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for| LOTR|Whovian|Sherlock Fan
When Cris read Professor Botros' request for assistance on the Student's bulletin board. Having some free time to spare, Cris made his way down to the Greenhouses, to collect some tea leaves for him.
Walking along the rows of plants, Cris searched until he found the plant he was looking. Camellia sinensis plant, which was the plant one collected leaves to make tea with.
Walking over to the tool shed, Cris selected a pruning shear before walking back to the plant. Putting on his gloves, he then leaned over the plant and searched for the appropriate bud and second and third leaves to snip off. Finding one, he used his pruning shears to snip that off before placing the cutting into a plastic baggie.
Then he gently moved aside more stems to look for others.

Adi made his way into the Greenhouse, He had seen Professor Botros's notice and was keen on helping the old fellow. The man had always been pretty cool in Adi's book. It seemed he wasn't the only one who had come to pick tea leaves though. "Hey, Cris,'' Adi said as he tugged on his gloves. "Those for Professor Botros?''
Now, Adi knew a little about which plant were used for tea. His grandmother was a fanatic about those and she even grew her own little tea plants so he felt he could manage to identify some here in the Greenhouse. Maybe it would be a good place to look near to Cris's area as he found what Adi recognised as Camellia sinensis. "How's it going?'' he asked the older Hufflepuff as he began his search.
In the meanwhile, the third year hummed to himself as was his habit. Shortly after beginning his search, he spotted one of the most common tea leaves- mint.
Taking a page out of Cris's book, Adi ran to fetch a shear. It won't be right to damage Bentley's plants. Carefully, he snipped a piece of the mint plant off. One type down!
There's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for| LOTR|Whovian|Sherlock Fan
Cris heard someone enter the Greenhouse and turned to see who it was. It was Adi, a fellow Hufflepuff and friend of his. Smiling and waving at him, Cris nodded in reply to Adi's question. "Yes these are for Professor Botros. This plant here has a couple of good cuttings but I don't want to take all from one plant. So I'll most likely pick some from another too."
"Good choice there. Mint. I'm sure Professor Botros would like the taste of that." Cris praised Adi as he found another sprig and using the pruning shears, snipped that off.
"Do you drink tea? I usually prefer Jasmine, Chrysanthemum and Camomile. Guess I like the flowered kind," Cris chuckled to himself. "I know the Professor mentioned tea leaves, but do you reckon he would mind some floral or herbal teas? I see some Holy Basil here," Cris pointed to the herbal plant.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Adi smiled back at Cris. He was running into the dude practically everywhere. "Good idea. That way he has a variety to choose from plus we don't sell the plants short.'' One sprig would be enough? Maybe he should cut another one. "Mint's one of the best,'' Adi agreed. He glanced at the sprig Cris had just cut and dropped in the bag. He didn't recognise that one. "What's that one?''
"I love tea! I really haven't got a favourite but as long as it tastes good, I'm okay with it. Of the one you just listed Camomile is the best, though.'' As he was speaking, Adi was on the hunt once more for another plant. And he found...Lemon Balm! Excellent! He snipped a nice, big sprig of that.
The boy glanced over at Cris when he mentioned Holy Basil. Or Tulsi as he knew it as."I don't think he'd mind, you know. That makes a pretty delicious tea.'' He knew that all too well having drunk that many times.
There's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for| LOTR|Whovian|Sherlock Fan
"That's Holy Basil and you're right it's really great tea to drink...also healthy too. You're right. I"m sure the Professor would appreciate a variety," Cris agreed with Adi before allowing his nose to lead him to another plant whose leaves were also used for tea making.
"Here we go, Spearmint. I guess it almost tastes like the mint you have there, just a little different. Now the Professor has different flavored mint leaves to choose from," Cris smiled down as he selected a sprig and gently removed it from the plant, dropping that into another small baggie.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
As Cris searched for another suitable plant for tea leaves, Adi did the same. He was totally relying on memory here. Hopefully he wouldn't pick something weird that turned out not to be tea leaves.
"I wonder which is mintier,'' the boy commented, referring to the regular mint he had picked and Cris's Spearmint. He liked minty stuff and won't mind finding out which was mintier. "So, Cris,'' he said changing the tea subject. "How do you like Hogwarts?''
At this moment, Adi came across a vaguely familiar plant. That's right! They were nettles! With the shear, he carefully and easily snipped away a few sprigs of nettle leaves.
There's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for| LOTR|Whovian|Sherlock Fan
Selecting another spearmint sprig, Cris removed it gently from its parent plant and popped it into the plastic baggie. Moving onto another row, Cris searched for more leaves that could be used to brew tea with.
He shrugged his shoulders at Adi's question. "I don't really know. To be honest, they smell the same to me, but I think spearmint tastes a little sweeter? Maybe we can ask Professor Bentley that question," Cris suggested before replying to Adi's other question.
"Hogwarts? I have to say I'm liking it. It definitely is different from Durmstrang, in lots of ways. I'm still having a hard time making friends, but I hope my luck with that changes. What about you? I guess the fact that you've been here three years, means you like it, right?," Cris asked Adi in turn.
As he waited for Adi to reply, he smiled when he spotted another plant whose leaves were popular in tea making. Lemon Balm. Selecting the best leaves, Cris reached down with his pruning shear and snipped off the sprig. Opening up another plastic baggie, Cris dropped the sprig into it.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
If spearmint was indeed sweeter, Adi would definitely prefer that to regular mint. Sweet was good. Hehe.
"You didn't have a hard time befriending Jasmine,'' Adi stated and grinned. He had found Catnip! Happily Adi snipped away at a few sprigs. He had never tasted Catnip before. He hoped the Professor would like it. Anyway..."You should just go on out there and talk to as much people as you can. That's what I do. Plus helping out others in class is a good way, too.'' Adi had noticed Cris often helping out the younger ones.
"I love it,'' he continued. "Wouldn't change coming here for the world.'' Hogwarts was awesome!
There's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for| LOTR|Whovian|Sherlock Fan
"Yeah I guess I should. I mean I'm trying to get out and meet more people, but it can be kind of hard especially when most of the people around your age already have their own group of friends. But I won't give up trying. At least, I have you and Jasmine. So that makes two," Cris raised up two fingers and managing to smile as he did that.
"I have to admit that Hogwarts is indeed growing on me. So far, Professor Bellaire is the only Professor who scares me and believe me I'm not easily that scared. You've known her longer than I do. Is she always a stickler for rules?" Cris asked Adi as he looked up from his leaf examination.
"Ah I see you've found Catnip. That's really useful for calming nerves and look what I've just found here, Passionflowers. I believe their leaves can be brewed to give one a relaxing and restful sleep. Do you reckon, Professor Botros needs any of that?" Cris grinned over as he picked up his pruning shears and snipped off a sprig. Pulling up another empty baggie, Cris dropped the sprig into it, before examining the plant for others.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Aw, poor Cris. But Adi had encouraging words. "Two is better than one,'' he said nodding. "Plus you've got another year here after this one so there's still plenty of time to make more friends.''
He laughed lightly at what Cris said next. ''She is. I understand what you mean fully. She scared me half to death in my first year and I guess I'm still a little afraid of her. I spend more time making sure I'm dressed properly before I head to her classes. She hates tardiness, too.'' But the woman really knew her Transfiguration and despite her strictness, Adi liked her.
The boy hadn't known that about Catnip and Passionflowers. "Thanks for letting me know.'' Those were interesting facts. "Yep, I think the poor old guy would need that.'' There were loads of kids to stress him out here at Hogwarts, after all. As he was speaking, Adi was searching for another tea plant and soon he found one. Anise Hyssop! He recognised it by the flower. Soon there were two sprigs of that to add to the set he had collected so far. "How much more tea leaves do you think we should get, Cris?''
What a lovely, and super cold, day today was. Perfect time to choose a present for Milton. A Christmas present for Milton, at that. One he was bound to get before Christmas because everyone was going to be busy over the holidays and the second part of the gift was going to be impossible to make.
Either way, Lottie stopped in front of Greenhouse 4. "We should probably get him a piranha plant, you know? It's festive enough," she told Lex, eyeing Greenhouse 7 because that one was slightly cooler (if not tropical) than 4. If they went the piranha way, then less spells for them to make on it.
They were only here to choose, after all. They could take all the time in the world.

But make it quick.
The Professor must have needed to add several warming charms to the greenhouses with the extra cold weather around the castle this year, otherwise Lex was sure half the plants would have died of the cold by now. It must have been a while since the castle was this cold...actually the last time it got to ridiculous temperatures there were dementors......merlin.
Lottie's stopping at Greenhouse 4 reminded her that they wouldn't be going all the way to Greenhouse 8 today. Well they could but it wouldn't be for Milton. Had to get him something easily disguised and shipped. Couldn't have it eat the owl on the way there. "Yeah, we could, or a couple chomping cabbages." Her eyes trailed over to Greenhouse 7. "If we don't like what we see in here then I'm voting the cobra lilies." Those could have been a nice unravelling for him.
"D'you reckon he'll be opening it infront of anyone that can save him?" She asked as she entered. "I mean, it'd hardly be effective if it didn't get a decent chunk out of him."
But what was she thinking? Milton with someone? Snort and maybe Lafay would come back and offer hugs. Milton was Milton. It just wasn't possible.

Thank goodness they're all equipped to handle dementors, if needed.
They were definitely not going all the way to Greenhouse 8. Milton would have an attack for sure. All they had to decide was which plant to get, not which plant will be the death of Milton. Assuming that's how he'll meet his end. Quite frankly, it could be anything with him. OH! "I'd thought of cobra lilies, too! But they barely do a thing, we need something that'll make an impression." Which is why they were gonna spend some time with the plants. Decisions, decisions.
Following Lex, she laughed, "I have no idea. I hope so, though, that way someone can save him if he needs to be saved somehow." It's Milton, okay? Aaaaanything can happen.
It'd be brilliant if Paulie Foster was friends with Milton, then Lottie could persuade Paulie into letting Milton open his present right in the middle of a sequence. They'd be able to hear, at least. Poor Milton, never saw it coming.

No matter what the situation, Lex didn't want dementors. The Gryffindor had never bothered learning to cast a proper patronus and would only feel bad watching Lottie saving the day while she chewed on chocolate. It hardly screamed Gryffindor.
Her bestfriend made a very legit point right there. The cobra lilies were nice but they needed a bang--one that wouldn't get them arrested while being a bang nonetheless. Good thing they'd cleared their schedules, yeah? Picking the perfect plant wouldn't just happen the moment they walked in. "True. I get the feeling he doesn't remember us as well as he should. The reminder needs to be strong enough." Like so strong he could practically SEE their smirks as he screamed in terror, like the good old days when they could actually watch him suffer.
"If?" Lex asked, turning to her with an amused grin. "This is Milton. He always needs saving, maybe not as much as before, but I doubt he's gotten that much better." Luck had always kept him alive and he could still be lucky but that didn't mean he wouldn't find himself in fixes.
Now where would they start looking? Did the temperment of the plant matter? They all attacked in the end, right? That was their job as flesh-eaters.

Adi was glad Cris understood what he was saying. The older boy had nothing to worry about. Still plenty of time left.
He glanced at his and Cris's combination of tea leaves. "Yep, I think we've got enough for him. Plus other students will pick too so soon he'll have more than enough.'' Probably enough to last the lifetime. Hehe. "That sounds awesome to me. But where should we dry them? Do you think we could find a good spot somewhere in here?'' Or maybe outside? Whichever was best. Adi left that decision up to Criss.

Where was a good question. Well they needed someplace warm and where the leaves would be able to get direct sunlight. Although the sun was shining brightly outdoors, the air was frigid and cold. It would take too long for them to dry the leaves. Looking around inside the greenhouse, an idea popped into Cris' head.
"Hey Adi, what about here? Professor Bentley always keeps the greenhouses warm to protect the plants from the cold. So we don't have to worry about our tea leaves freezing. All we need is a place where they will get direct sunlight...hey maybe over here. What do you think?" Cris pointed over to a empty flower bed.
"We can leave them here to dry and come back in a few days time to check on them," Cris suggested to his friend.

No, what would happen is that Lottie would have to save Lex for doing something stupid, like eating chocolate in front of a dementor instead of, I don't know, running? Now that was very Gryffindor.
Exactly. They didn't need subtle when it came to plants, after all, Milton had survived a super-deadly one. Surely he could deal with cobra lilies, but could he deal with one that was actually a minor threat to his hands? We'll see! ^^
As far as Milton needing a reminder, Lottie merely nodded as she spotted some plants and several treats for them. Basically, they needed to try and see which one could do more damage... at first sight. And she wasn't about to try it with her hands, even if she was wearing gloves, you know? But still. "Exactly, it's just a reminder." And finally getting him a gift.
LOL! True! What was she thinking, Lottie laughed and almost got bitten by a piranha plant for not being careful enough, "We should see it as: The worse things get at Hogwarts, the luckier he gets." So, he probably wasn't dying too soon, yeah?
Plants. Okay. They were skipping the fanged geraniums because she owned one and those were docile enough. Or maybe hers was well taken cared of, what with Spike giving her tips and such.

Hearing Cris speaking to him, Adi looked over to the flowerbed the sixth year was indicating. It was bare and sunlight would be able to catch the leaves if they were left there. "Good idea!'' he said enthusiastically. "Let's go spread them out.''
The third year headed over to the flowerbed and began to place his tea leaves on one half of the bed. He made sue they were placed apart so they could be dried properly.

..............That was possibly very true and the idea that the Gryffindor would simply stand there, nomming on chocolate and watching things unfold was hard to argue. Lex wasn't exactly known for her safety precautions. Things could get bad real fast with her. Ahem.
Alexa noticed the plant bait at about the same time that Lottie did and got to thinking they could choose the plant based on how vicious it was while it was eating, because that's what it would be doing essentially; trying to eat Milton. No doubt he'd survive and it'd be another story for him to add to his growing list of things he survived. He was welcome. "I suppose, in the end, it's good he didn't get run over by a train like we thought he would. He's more use alive." Where was he to hear that too?? Lex just admitted he wasn't a waste of space and he's absent when she does. Ugh. Could they put that on the card then?
Lex reached for a bucket with chopped meat in it, her eyes widening a little when Lottie nearly lost a finger (except not really because those things didn't really do THAT) but she relaxed soon enough. Lottie knew what she was doing you know. "Pretty much. I get the feeling he'd survive a zombie apocalypse, if only for the fact of being in the right place at the right time or having people who'd make sure he wasn't chomped." Milton was a survivor, just ask the man-eating plant that nearly made him lunch.
"What about these?" She asked, stopping in front of some colourful little plants that were chomping in their direction. They were fiesty enough.

Once he had all the leaves spread out to dry, he looked up to make sure the leaves were getting the proper direct sunlight. Then he stepped back from the flower bed. "[B]I think they'll be safe here for the time being. Let's head on back to the castle now/B]" Cris urged the younger boy as he made his way out of the Greenhouse.
Adi watched as Cris did his thing, labeling his bags and stuff. Hmmm. Maybe he should follow the older boy's example and do the same when he collected the leaves from drying.
"Yep, back to the Castle we go.'' Adi couldn't wait to get to the Common Room and sit in front of that fire. Or maybe he would head to the Kitchen for some hot chocolate or something? Where was Elodie when you needed her? She made the nest hot chocolate. The boy followed Cris out of the Greenhouse. Bye bye for now, tea leaves.

Cris returned to the Greenhouse to check on the tea leaves he had left out to dry. He hoped that despite it being freezing cold outside, the temperature in the Greenhouse would help keep the leaves warm and dry.
Walking over to the flower bed, he smiled to see that both Adi and his tea leaf collection were still where they had left it. Walking over to his batch, he reached down to feel their texture. Yes they were most definintely more brittle and dry. Just the right texture for making tea. Picking up its respective plastic bags, Cris gently picked up the leaves and delicately placed them into the bags.
He wondered whether Adi would be returning today to retrieve his leaves too.

Adi had been wandering the Grounds, enjoying the intense cold. Okay, so maybe he hadn't been enjoying it that much. He was considering heading back to the Common Room when he happened to see Cris heading for the Greenhouse.
Coincidence because Adi had considered collecting his tea leaves today but had decided at the last minute to consult Cris first to find out if the time had been sufficient enough for the leaves to dry.
The third year hurried after Cris and caught up to him in the Greenhouse. "Hey, Cris!'' He went over to examine the leaves. Ah yes. They were indeed dry. Time to collect, yes?
