Stepping into the arena, you are immediately enveloped with the light shining into the room, either morning or evening depending on what time you decide to enter, yet it's as chilly as a snow covered stone statue. An extra cloak or two would be helpful. If you can tear your gaze away from the intricately designed windows and high ceilings could, you can see to the very right of the room, there is the long platform in which supervised duels will take place while four benches on either side are placed at a safe distance for those who would like to sit and watch. Just ahead of the platform in the right corner, there is a door, though pay no attention to it. It's locked for a reason.
Towards the back wall, there are various types of practice dummies, both stationary and moving, depending on what difficulty the practicer wants. Don't be afraid to go all out with your spells, for these dummies are charmed to repair themselves. There is one practice dummy set aside that will shoot spells back to the practicer, however, permission from a Professor is required to use it. To the left side of the arena are two sets of stands, eight seats high, that look out to the entire arena, comfortable for those who would just like to watch what's going on all around or for general purposes such as studying or relaxing after a long day in the arena.
The middle of the room is quite empty, due to the fact that the defense Professor enjoys presenting lessons in here, but please, despite the brilliant light that shines through the arena due to the large windows, it is not some place to sunbathe or fall asleep. You will be levitated out with a good dose of cold water splashed on you if caught.
The last time Cutty had been in the dueling arena it was because Fern Quimbley was entirely too stupid for her own good. He hadn't seen her in sometime and that suited him well. Were it not for his insatiable curiosity he might not have questioned himself as to her whereabouts.
The dueling area was quiet that morning, which was something he could appreciate as he wanted some time to just practice on the magical theory he'd picked up though books and visitors.
The smallish snake spotted the locked door and immediately made for it. He tried the handle, but nothing came of it. This, of course only made him want to open it more. What was Romanos hiding in there that it had to remain locked?
He stood back and took his wand to it. "Alohomora!" Nothing. "Alohomora!" Nothing. He turned his back as if ready to give up on it, but then quite suddenly was all upon the door knob legs and all.

neat circular motion, with his wrist flicking just the slightest, he called out,"Impiriano," creating a blueish bubble shield around him. Even as he watched his shield deflect the spell that Jasmine had cast on him, Cris immediately launchd into the offensive again. Bending on one knee, he called out the incantation to another Tickling spell, "Titillando!" as he waved his wand in an upside down curving movement and watched as purple hand-shaped ribbons of light flew out from his wand towards Jasmine.
Cris easily deflected Jasmine's spell and immediately sent another Tickling spell her way. Even though she had expected a quick retaliation, Jasmine did not think that she could get her shield up in time. She decided that her best defense in this case was to try to dodge the spell. Jasmine dove to her right, again barely missing the spell. As she rolled and came to her feet, she wondered how long her luck would hold out. Spinning aound, Jassmine took aim at Cris and said, "Incarcerous". She knew that he would have had plenty of time to prepare for her counterattack. Jasmine took a deep breath and tried to be ready for whatever came next.

Alexa Cambridge was a selfish Gryffindor on the odd occasion. Today happened to be one of those odd occasions, leaving the girl to get up at a ridiculously early hour, head to the dueling arena and be sure she'd closed the door behind her. This was more conducive to her learning, which at the moment, was the only thing that concerned her.
Knocking Bolton out with a non-verbal spell had been brilliant but she'd need to work at it, need to learn how to make everything else non-verbal as well. Of course she knew not everything would be accomplished in this capacity but she would take what she could. Plus she was working on her explosions today. One did not allow idiots into the dueling arena while you practiced making things go 'BOOM'. That was asking for her to accidentally blow them up on purpose....don't question it.
Having successfully gotten the hang of the non-verbal stinging hex--something that would no doubt prove extra bloody useful when they didn't see it coming--her mind drifted to something she'd been wanting to try for ages.
Lex flicked her wand, aiming at the dummy across the room while she skillfully ignored the rattling noises at the door. "Bombarda Maxima!" There was a brilliantly loud explosion yes, but...."Weak." Weak for a spell you added 'Maxima' to.

"Great dodging there," Cris called out as he watched Jasmine dive to her right to avoid getting hit by his spell. And then in a blink of an eye, it was his turn to duck for cover as ropes came flying towards him, only to bounce off his shield.
Cris smiled to himself. That was one of the reasons this was his favorite shield. It help up longer then the others, he didn't have to keep concentrating on keeping it up, and best of all, while the shield successfully deflected offensive spells cast at him, he could still cast spells through it.
Like now. With a clear and unobscured view of Jasmine, Cris waved his wand like he was drawing two wobbly legs, and non-verbally cast the Dancing Feet Spell, 'Tarantallegra'. He watched as a green beam of light shot out from his wand and headed towards Jasmine's feet.

The dancing spell had hit her and now her legs had a mind of their own. They started out with an impromptu tap dance. "I had a feeling that this one would be coming out of your bag of tricks before long.". For some strange reason her legs started to do the can-can with a series of high kicks, one after the other. Then Jasmine started to pirouette over and over again. "I don't get dizzy easily, but I do have a limit", she said as she continued turning. "When you said you wanted to see me dance, this isn't exactly what I had in mind."

The simple fact that was such thing as a dueling arena was beyond awesome in AJ's mind. She had a feeling that she would be spending quite a lot of time here. Other than the cleaning spell, AJ was not up to par with using her wand, but she was excited that Adi had agreed to show her some of his moves. Maybe learning spells would have been a better idea before going right into battle, but that wasn't really AJ's style. She always seemed to go straight for the things that she wanted.
The first year walked around and noticed the dummies. She could always have a go on one of those in her free time. AJ would have to get Angel to come down her with her. Maybe she could talk her sister into dueling her. It would be good practice and they could learn together. Aj took her wand out and twiddled it in between her fingers while she waited for her friend to show up.

Another duel! Adi was looking forward to this because he had enjoyed the one he and Benny had last term. No, he wasn't going to think of Benny. If the other boy wanted to spend all his time with Angel, that was totally fine. But it didn't stop Adi from being annoyed.
Stepping into the Dueling Arena, the third year looked around. He spotted her instantly. AJ, one of his new friends. It was kind of a shame to be dueling her because she was only a first year and wouldn't have covered much spells. Adi would go easy on her. Hehe.
He headed over to AJ and tapped her on the shoulder. "Hi. Ready to loose?''

When his Dancing Feet Spell, hit Jasmine, Cris was actually surprised that she had not been able to duck that spell. Up until then, she had performed superbly, deflecting off every offensive spell he had sent her way. Except for the one that he had cast non-verbally. Was that considered cheating? Casting non-verbal spells while dueling? Cris never thought to ask. He made a mental note to himself to ask Professor Romanos about that.
Lowering his shield, Cris quickly pointed his wand at Jasmine's feet and called out, "Finite," ending the spell. But that was not before he watched Jasmine first perform a tap dance, followed by a series of high kicks and then switching over to pirouettes. He bit his lip trying his hardest not to laugh as he reached out a hand, to hold her still.
"I know, I know. I'm sorry," replied before asking, "Are you okay? I hope you didn't pull a muscle," laughter temporarily forgotten for the moment.
"I have to say though, you looked really good performing those high kicks. In fact, I think you kick higher than I do," Cris tried to maintain a straight face but lost the battle with that last comment. He burst out laughing, laughing so hard that he had to bend over to hold his tummy.
Unable to speak, he waved his hand at her as a gesture of apology. When he finally able to compose himself, Cris wiped the tears of laughter from his eyes, before asking, he asked Jasmine.
"Um....would you like to do this again? Best of out of three?" Cris had to ask.

He'd heard it before he'd felt it. An extremely loud BOOM! Before Cutty had let go of the mysteriously locked door little tidbits of debris were flying his way and tapping against his back before falling to the ground.
Alexa Cambridge.
"I don't know. It looked pretty good to me." He said dropping the door thing for a minute and stepping over to survey the...well, what was left of the not-very-recognizable dummy. "What were you trying to do, Cambridge?" He asked, quickly stepping out of the firing line and moving closer to Lex's wand-arm side.

Feeling the tap on her shoulder she knew that her friend had arrived. AJ turned around and smiled at the third year. "You wish." She was always confident even when she knew that the odds were against her. Not really wanting to ask for help, but deciding that it would be in her best interest, AJ decided to ask Adi for a few pointers before the duel started. It was only fair.
"Okay, so tell me again a couple of the spells that are important." She had heard of a few of them, but had never had the chance to try them out. AJ knew that Adi wouldn't be too rough on her, but she was still ready for the challenge.

Adi grinned. That's one of the things he liked about AJ. She wasn't one of those persons who backed down easily. "We'll see about that,'' he responded as he eyed the dummies. They kind of looked creepy all bunched together there.
"Well, all spells are important even if they don't seem that way. In a real duel, it could be one of those that saves your life. But since we aren't in a real duel, you don't have to worry about that. Just use any spell that comes to your head.'' Which would be the basic first year spells. Unless AJ had advanced to spells above first years.
"So, you all set?'' Adi took a few dozen step away from his friend. "So we bow first.'' He grinned. "Of course in real duels we don't but this is a friendly one.'' Adi did a little bow and said, "My lady,'' his voice with laughter an amusement.

"Yes we will." AJ was very competitive and she would give it her all. She cracked her knuckles and stretched her neck from side to side while she gave Adi a playful smirk. She was stretched and ready for battle.
"Right." Anything that popped into her head. Even though this wasn't a real battle surely instinct would kick in and spells would come out of her mouth. Quickly she went through every spell in her memory. The brunette was just going to have to wing it.
"I'm set." Game face on, check! Cool, they were bowing and everything. Watching Adi bow first, she mimicked him. "Good sir," she said with a smile. It was go time. Show me what you got Adi.

She wasn't aware the door had been open and she wasn't aware she had company either. Her attention had been fixed on the dummy that was no more...until it started magically piecing itself back together. That had always been one of her favourite parts about these dummies. They fixed themselves so she could keep blasting without a care. Her head turned at the sound of a voice. Oh. Cutty. That was alright then.
"It looked like bombarda." She corrected. She was hoping for the 'Maxima' effect and in comparison, this one had been weak. Her eyes followed him as he got closer.
"I was working on the 'Bombarda Maxima' incantation, for bigger explosions. Don't reckon I'll have a legit reason to use it while at school but I can't get in trouble for it either so long as it's in here." Lex waited for the dummy to right itself then took aim again. "Bombarda Maxima!" And an even BIGGER boom than the first, but the Gryffindor was not satisfied.
With a sigh, she turned to look at him once more. "Come to learn some defensive spells?" You know...him being in the dueling arena and all...

"Oh, I know, but I am always ready." It was in her DNA to get it her all in everything that she did. The least she could do was look intimidating because she didn't have many spells in her arsenal.
Before she could think further Adi was already hitting her with a spell. What was the blocking spell again? It was not use. Before she could gather her thoughts it was as if some force was taking over her body. "Baby you a song, you make me wanna roll my windows down and cruise." Why was she singing country? Why did she have no control over this? Ah! Adi's jinx must have been a signing one. She would have to remember that one.
Trying to control herself she gave a jinx a go. Pointing her wand at Adi she shouted. "Aguamenti." AJ had no idea why that spell of all spells came to her mind. Honestly she didn't have a lot to work with.

Adi sniggered as AJ burst into a county song. It was one he recognised. But apparently the strength of the spell was a weak one for AJ only sang a few lines. "I actually am more of a rock type of person but thanks for the entertainment. Did you know you have a beautiful singing voice?'' Yep, she did.
A jet of water shooting towards him was totally unexpected. Adi hurriedly ducked but it wasn't enough. Water splattered his head, making the top part of his hair wet. He flashed AJ a thumbs up. Looks like she got that spell under control. "Colloshoo!'' Adi made the sort of incomplete rectangular wand movement with his wand. Let's see if this worked.

"Well, one never knows. Besides, 'It's a good thing I never took the time to prepare for this!' said no one eveh." That was his main focus anyway. Preparation. But he'd sort of let the ball drop in this his third year. Sort of. I mean, he did come to the Dueling Arena alone. Cutty watched as the dummy pulled itself together like an extremely self-sufficient Humpty Dumpty. "Yeah, Just trying to put to good use the things I've read about in books. You know, a little practical to the theory."
"Maybe it's what yer blowin' oop." Shame that. It was probably one of those spells that only worked where it had material to work with, like Rictemsepra, which Cutty imagined wouldn't be too effective on an inanimate object. The spells creation probably had a specific use in mind. Necessity was the mother of all invention afterall. "Engorgio!" He said aiming his wand at the dummy and growing it until it was roughly the size of bear.

She had no idea why that song of all songs came to her mind, but it wasn't like she had control of it or anything. She smirked at Adi's comment. "I like rock too, but under pressure I guess country speaks to me." Her voice was beautiful? "You liked that huh?" AJ was still being playful. "Thanks." She had never been told that before.
Score! She had managed to get his hair wet. "Not your gorgeous locks," she teased. Before she could goof off much more he had hit her with another spell. Once again she was caught off guard. The way it was looking, she wouldn't be any good in an actual duel. She seemed to be okay and was wondering if his spell missed hers when she realized that her feet were completely stuck to they floor. "Hey!" Thinking on her feet this time she hollered "Silencio." It was an easy one to remember because it pretty much was the same word as silence. HA! See if he could do any more spells after that. Of course she would have had to cast it correctly, and she wasn't completely sure about that.

She was into rock music too? This was awesome! Adi had never met a girl with whom he had so many things in common with. "Maybe sometime you should sing something rock for me then with that beautiful voice of yours,'' he said, playing right back.
Adi laughed and shook his head rapidly from side to side to get the water out. "How do my gorgeous locks look now?'' Probably very messy due to the shaking.
Gotcha! AJ's feet were stuck to the ground! He was about to call out something to her but when he opened his mouth, no sound came out. The Silencing Spell! Ugh! Adi tried again. Nothing. Uh oh. Adi waved his hand vigorously at AJ and pointed to his throat. Life the spell, AJ!

Jasmine was angry with herself for getting hit with Cris' spell. Going over it in her mind, she thought of several things she could have done differently. When he ended the spell, Jasmine took a moment to compose herself and regain her focus. Dwelling on her error would not do her any good now.
Wait, was Cris laughing? Laughing? Well, he did ask if she was OK........before cracking jokes and laughing some more. "I'm fine", Jasmine said. When the laughter continued, Jasmine rolled her eyes and said, "Really dude, was it that funny?" Shaking her head, Jasmine walked over to the starting point, ready to try again. "Alright, best two out of three. Let's do this.". Standing with her wand at the ready, Jasmine waited for Cris to agree or disagree.

Giving her apologetic smile, he now felt bad for teasing her the way he had, "I'm sorry, Jasmine. I shouldn't have laughed like that. If the shoe had been on the other foot, I know you wouldn't have laughed at me," he quickly aplogized.
"Okay best two out of three," he nodded in agreement before he turned around and walked back to his starting position. He first bowed at her, before raising his wand at ready. "On the count of three. One...two...three...Protego," Cris waved his wand in front of him, first flicking up in a short arc and then his wrist twisting into a determined flick at the end, drawing a horizontal line across.
Yes the best defense is the best offense, as he brought up his shield and expanded its coverage. He was now ready to deflect whatever spell she sent his way.

Surprise!
"I might have", Jasmine said trying to hide a smile. "I'm sorry too. Sometimes I can be a little too competitive and take myself a little too seriously.".
Jasmine bowed in response to Cris doing the same. She waited for Cris to count to three and then............."Obscuro". Oh no he didn't throw up the shield without casting an offensive spell. Jasmine had her wand ready, waiting for a spell that never came. "Well played Mr. Strand, well played, but I'm not finished with you yet." Trying to anticipate when Cris would send a spell her way was difficult. She also needed to gauge exactly when his shield would fail and she could have a chance of landing a spell. When Jasmine thought the time was right, she aimed her wand and said, "Langlock". It probably wasn't the best spell to use since obviously Cris was adept at non-verbal spells.

Cris watched as the spell Jasmine sent towards him bounced off his shield. Then he dropped his shield and went on the offensive. Pointing his wand at Jasmine, he called out,"Aqua Eructo." A beam of blue light shot out from his wand followed closely be a powerful jet of water that headed straight for Jasmine.
....and at about the same time, he heard Jasmine cast her spell at him. Realizing that he didn't have enough time to raise his shield, Cris dived to dodge the spell but he was a split second too late. He felt his tongue glue itself to the roof of his tongue. He had been magically silenced...at least verbally.
Even it was a tad too late to do it, Cris waved his wand in a circular motion and non-verbally cast the blue aura shield around him.

Checking his sundial watched as he leaned against the wall just inside the dueling arena, the professor couldn't help but chuckle a bit at the mere thought of what was about to unfold. He was about to duel a student who was the spitting image of himself at that age. The attitude that is. And the disregard for professor authority. And, as rumor had it, the tendency to make things go KABOOM.
He wasn't sure how much of a serious game face the Gryffindor would have on, but Airey wore one of sheer amusement. If nothing else this would be a fun exercise for himself. He obviously wasn't going to go full on with his spells on Mr. Hirase - or else he may have to explain to the Headmistress why the young man had suffered the same fate as the zombie on the field trip.
Yeah....no red shirting Gryffindors today!
Drumming his hands on his thighs, the astronomer hum Eye of the Tiger not so quietly to himself while he waited for his dueling partner to arrive.

Kevin found himself getting nervous the closer he got to the dueling arena. He had practised a few spells before their duel and he was quite proud to say he had them under control. Also, maybe he needed to thank Donny for using that tickling charm on him. That had surely knocked him out and he had practised it. But too bad Kevin wasn't the thanking kind of person.
As he stood in front of the door to the dueling arena, the Gryffindor took a deep breath. He could do this! He opened the door but didn't walk inside just yet. What if it was a trap?! What if he attacked him right at the door? It wouldn't be the first time it had happened... But it WAS a duel and according to the books he had read they should bow and such to each other before beginning.
He did have his wand at the ready though, just in case. And when he entered the room and looked around , he found the Professor leaning against the wall. "You ready to get beaten by a second year?" he had a total game face on right now. Gryffindor bravery as he called it. But he was actually nervous. He just hoped it wouldn't show.
