Come send a note or letter using your own owl or any of the school owls. Owls line the walls in nooks and on branches. Pellets, old animal skeletons, and belladonna berries are on the floor.
There are a few pieces of parchment, a ragged quill, and a dried-up bottle of ink on an old wooden desk in the corner should you need to add a postscript to your letter.
Well, okay... like THREE letters, but for Toby, who found the focus required for letter writing almost impossible, it sure was an achievement. Okay, sure, that time could have been better spent with trying to catch up on the homework and studying that he was wayyyyyyyyyyyyy behind on, but... well, Toby just decided not to think about that.
He didn't have an owl of his own, seeing as he didn't initiate enough letter sending to really warrant one, and his grandmother's owl was, naturally, with his grandmother. The Hufflepuff looked around the owlery and moseyed on over to a cluster of little nooks with expectant looking owls, reaching into his inside jacket pocket and bringing out one of the unsealed parchement envelopes at random. Ella's name was on the envelope, and Toby quickly reached inside just to read through the note and make sure everything in the letter was in order.
SPOILER!!: Letter to Ella
Hi Ella!
Is it cold where you are? 'Cause it's super cold here, like DECEMBER kind of cold. Wow, that's a weird way to start a letter, but it was the first thing I could sort of think of. HOW ARE YOU????? I'm doing okay. It feels like so long since I got to fly. I mean, at least the castle is big, and there's space to run and a bunch of stuff to do (Derry even said she'd teach me karate) but I sure miss being in the air a whole lot. But anyway, at least I'll be able to get back on a broom over summer, right? But don't worry, I'm keeping totally safe, just like you said.
The castle feels super weird with out you here. I mean, it was weird at first, but now it's even WEIRDER. I keep thinking I'm going to see you in the common room or in the corridor, even though by now I should remember that you're not here. I miss you, but maybe I can see you during the next Hogsmeade visit? I'd like that. Things are still good here and everything; I hang out with Soph (a different Soph to your one of course, haha) a lot now, which is amazing. I'm really glad me and her are friends and get to hang out as much as we do. She's still my bestie. I mean, there's no Forrest here, and no you, and there may as well be no Cutty (that's a kinda long story... we've not spoken in months, but I'll tell you when I see you), so having someone as great as Soph around is even more fantastic.
And... well, I kinda like her too, actually, but you can't tell ANYONE. I'm pretty sure she knows, and I'm pretty sure she likes me too, but I'm scared to ask her out or anything. I mean, we're BEST FRIENDS. What if she doesn't want to go out with me, and I make things WEIRD. Or what if we start going out, and we stop being best friends and are boyfriend and girlfriend INSTEAD? Though come to think of it... is being in a relationship actually any different to having a super super super best friend (which is basically what me and Soph are anyway)? Or are they different? Can you be best friends with someone AND be in a relationship? It's all so confusing.
I really really like her, Ella. I don't want to mess our friendship up. I'm worried about saying anything first; it feels too much like trying to take control and I don't want to do that. I like for other people to feel like they're in control, because I can go at whatever pace they need me to go, you know? This probably makes no sense at all, but I've been thinking about this for ages and I didn't want to ask anyone else about it because I didn't want anyone to know I was having problems with anything, and I thought things would make sense eventually, but they didn't. But I trust you. What do you think I should do? It doesn't matter if you don't have an answer; I already feel better that I wrote it down. Ah.
By the way, THANK YOU for my Christmas present! It's definitely different from the pogo stick, and took a while to get used to, but it's perfect for all the bouncing I do around the castle. I had your present all ready to go, but I misplaced it when I was doing all my packing (I keep losing EVERYTHING these days, my grandma says I can be as scatterbrained as her friend Judith sometimes) but as soon as it turns up, I'll send it on. I got your old OWL notes too; thanks! They're gonna be real handy. I can't believe the exams are only a year away. I tell ya, I was right about getting a head start in my second year.
Anyway, I think that's all for now. I still have to write letters to Forrest and my Grandma, and I suppose I should get started on my homework at one point. But yeah, I love you and I miss you and I hope I get to see you real real real real real soon.
Love your little bro (in everything but blood)
Toby-o
PS: There's something I need to tell you about soon. Nothing bad, don't worry, but something to do with other stuff in this letter. I want to tell you face to face, though.
As he read, the Hufflepuff drummed his fingers against the back of the parchment and tapped one foot, humming a jaunty little tune. He soon deemed everything perfectly in order, stuffed the letter back into the envelope, sealed it, and held out his arm for an owl to hop on. A second later he had side-stepped to the window, and the large barn owl was off on its way. Toby watched it for a moment before reaching into his pocket for another letter. This one was for Forrest.
SPOILER!!: Letter to Forrest
HI FORREST!
Sorry it's been so long since my last letter. I'm not sure how the fifth, sixth and seventh years manage to study so much; sitting in lessons all day makes me not want to look at a book or a quill ever AGAIN. But I was on a letter writing roll today, so here it is!
First of all, MAJOR NEWS! Well, you know you told me about your first kiss a while back? Well... I HAD MY FIRST KISS TOO! You're the first person I've told, like AT ALL! I don't know if Soph's told anyone yet... but she probably has. That's who I kissed, of course, Sophie. On New Years Eve. AT MIDNIGHT. It was... really weird. I guess I've never thought about kissing someone else before, never really thought about it as something on my to do list or whatever. But it was still amazing, anyway. Probably because it was Soph. I was totally dazed for ages afterward, because it's so weird to have your first kiss under FIREWORKS. Like in a film or something. Kissing is so weird though, I don't think it would have been nearly as amazing if it wasn't Soph. But, uhhh... yeah. That happened.
How's Salem? I still think it's weird not having you around the castle and common room. Now Ella's gone too, I mainly spend my time with a few of the Ravenclaws or doing Yearbook things (I got a PROMOTION, did I tell you?) or just exploring the castle. Actually, that reminds me, have you written to Cutty at all recently? Or, well, has he written to you? Just, y'know, out of curiosity.
We still can't fly here, AND it's like SUPER SUPER COLD. I guess you've got different weather, being so far away, and I mean it wasn't THIS cold when I visited home over the holidays, so it seems like something ELSE is up.
Anyway, I hope everything's alright with you, and classes are going good (I don't think they do OWLs outside of the UK, so whatever it is you have to study for, I hope it's all going super well). Let me know if you wanna meet again when we both have time off school next, yeah?
Miss you bud,
Your best friend,
Toby
Another read through of the letter, another acquired barn owl, and the second letter was off on its way to... uhhhh... America. Were these owls even supposed to go that far? None of the owls he'd used had delivered those letters last year, but that was probably a case of lazy owls or something. This one seemed pretty up to the job.
The final letter was intended for home; a lengthy message to Toby's grandmother, who had asked that he write at least once this term so she knew how he was doing. It was more important than ever this year that she be kept in the loop, what with everything, and Toby was completely obliging with that one request. It was the least he could do, y'know?
Pulling this last letter out of his pocket, Toby moved so that his back was to the window, and slid down the wall so he sat on the floor of the owlery, ignoring the bird droppings and, uh... dead things. Whilst his feet continued to tap out a rhythm on the floor, Toby read through this final letter, just as he had the others.
SPOILER!!: Letter to Grandma Tempus
Hi Grandma
Just writing to check in with you, like you asked. It's real cold here; d'you think you could send me some of those awesome cookies you make, which warm you up from the inside out? I think Soph would love to try them, and Fuller and Thompson too. Maybe I could even share some with the Potions Master, Professor Cullodon.
I'm doing okay. Still happy and stuff. It's getting harder and harder to concentrate and focus and try to not move around so much, and lessons and homework can be super difficult. But I'm trying my hardest, like you told me to do. I'm a little behind with work, but I am trying. I might go visit Fuller or Thompson, soon, just for a chat. They're always real nice when I talk to them, and super understanding.
Sometimes things are good and sometimes things aren't so good, but I'm totally okay. Promise.
I miss you grandma, can't wait to see you for the spring holidays.
Love you
Tobias
Mmmmmmkay. That was fine too. Well, not TOTALLY. In fact, Toby was pretty sure he wasn't quite managing to get the whole truth into the letter. Something was definitely holding him back from going into more detail, but the idea of sitting and trying to add more to the letter was as good as soul-destroying; he needed to go and run and bounce around and do something that he could focus his limitless energies on.
The Hufflepuff stood and held out his arm to one more owl, a screech owl this time. When the creature had the letter, Toby gently stroked the feathers on its head with the back of his free hand, and held his arm out. The owl took off into the air, and Tobias watched it fly off into the blinding daylight. He watched, waiting until the bird became merely a speck on the horizon before completely disappeared, before stuffing his hands into his pockets and striding on out of the owlery. Time to look for something to doooooooooooo. And not homework.

Lucy came quickly in owlery ..
She whistled loudly to call her owl ..
Amber went to her immediately, attracted by the good smell!
Lucy said, "Amber, now I will give you two fried potatoes.
You have to taste both potatoes and then you must tell me which one is cooked by the kitchen"
Amber ate both potatoes ..
"Well" said Lucy.
"Now you have to take the potato from the box that comes from the kitchen" ..
Amber without hesitation took with its beak another potato from the box labeled "kitchen".
"Cool" said Lucy
"I didn't have any doubt that you would have guessed!!"..Then Lucy hugged her owl..

Dear Allison,
I hope that you're having an awesome summer. Sorry that I've been a lame pen pal, bliss, I've been very busy at school. This place is awesome and I hope that one day that you'll get to go here. Let me know how life is going, alright? I'll promise that I'll be a better pen pal in the future, sis.
See you soon!
-Simon
He sealed his letter and made his way up all those stairs to the Owlery. When he reached the top, he had to stop to catch his breath. Woah. Had the amount of stairs multiplied since the last time that he'd been up here? He definitely felt as if that were the case.
Once he had caught his breath, he walked over towards the many owls that were resting up here. Now he had to find one that would take his message for him, but which one would accomplish the tedious task?

It had been awhile since Ana had sent any letters to her family, what with her younger siblings being busy as she was at school and the elder ones just being busy in general. Aleksandr was travelling at the moment though and he'd sent her some clothes and accessories, as well as some food, earlier today and so she'd decided that now would be a good time to write to him.
Sealed letter in hand Ana made her way up the stairs to the owlery, wishing she was in better shape since the climb nearly killed her. There were way too many steps, especially coming all the way up from the dungeons. After taking a moment to catch her breath she looked around for her Owl. Noticing he was near a younger boy she walked over before holding her arm out for the snowy owl to come perch on, giving the boy a friendly smile as she did so. She was after all probably breaking into his personal bubble.

As he was busy searching for an owl, Simon noticed that a girl had arrived up there. A very pretty girl. Plus, she was holding her arm out. Simon blinked for a second.
Wait. Why was she doing that? he wondered but before he could ask she smiled at him. Huh. He blinked his baby blue eyes again. A girl was smiling at him. Well that was nice of her. So he smiled back at her cause why not. "Hey! It's a pretty chilly day to be sending a letter off," he said, giving her a friendly wave. Merlin, people were just really nice at this school. Then all of a sudden, his blue eyes widened in realization why she was holding her arm out. Oh, it was for an owl to perch on it. He quickly did the same thing and before he knew it, one of his friend's owls landed on his arm.
So this is how sending a letter worked. The last time he had been up here was with Ethan which was back in October or something.

Oh good. It looked as though the boy didn't mind that she was standing so close. He even seemed friendly enough. Not that she'd actually met anyone that wasn't friendly while she'd been here. It was a chilly day to be sending a letter off?"Is it? I didn't really notice," which was true, Ana wasn't even really bundled up, oh she was wearing a jumper and jeans but both were light weight. "Besides, I'm sure the owls will be fine with dealing with the chill," or at least hers would.
She'd been going to introduce herself when she felt herself be nipped playfully by her attention seeking owl. "Privet Petr," she cooed, scratching underneath his wings the way she knew he liked before grabbing some treats out of her pocket and giving him a few, before offering some to the boys owl. He could take them or not but sharing was always polite. "I'm Anastasia by the way, and you are?" she asked, shooting the boy another grin. She was in a happy, smiling mood today, therefore smiles all round.

Wait. The girl didn't think it was chilly. Wow, that was impressive. Perhaps she came from a colder climate than this? Simon just blinked his blue eyes in awe of this older girl and gave her a kind smile. "Wow, you must have some type of super power that enables you to withstand extreme temperatures," he said with a wide grin as he teased her. Then he became more serious. "Or perhaps you just are accustomed to this weather." Simon certainly wasn't not. Hailing from a warmer climate definitely made the extreme winter all the more unpleasant. He nodded and observed the owls. Yes, they did seem to be doing okay.
Glancing at the owl sitting on his arm, he told the owl his home address and set the owl off into the sky. He glanced back over to the friendly girl. Her name was Anastasia. That was a Russian name, right? It sounded Russian. "It's nice to meet you, Anastasia. I'm Simon. Simon Holden. Third year Slytherin. How are you today?" he explained with a wide grin. Yay! Introductions were always good.

A super power? Ana couldn't help but to laugh at the thought of having super powers. Some would argue that simply having magic would be a super power. Composing herself she bent down slightly to whisper conspiratorially into the boys ear. "I'm really the snow queen, but you have to keep that secret." Pulling back she schooled her features into a serious mask, a smirk playing at the corner of her lips.
"Find Aleksandr in Florence," Ana told Petr as she tied the letter to his leg, giving him one last scratch before he flew away. "It's nice to meet you too Simon. I'm in Slytherin too, but sixth year not third," she added, figuring that since Simon had given out that information she should do so as well. Share and share alike and all that stuff. "And I guess I'm good today, a little bored, hence the letter writing to my brother but otherwise I've just been enjoying the weather. You?" Ana asked, moving over to a window and sitting down on the ledge so she could take in the view.
This icy, frigid, snow-filled virulent winter is beginning to esclate toward blizzard levels with a polar vortex wind chill suddenly sweeping the grounds as well as the owlery high atop the castle towers. Brrr! Best get to an area of the castle that is encolsed now before it's more than your nose that gets frostbitten! It looks like Hogwarts may already be in the process of being snowed in....

The snow queen? She knew he was joking but it was always fun to play around with a joke. He gave her a quick wink. "Sure, you're secret's safe with me, your Royal Highness," he said as he gave her two thumb's up. Oh. Wait. He should've bowed. So then he gave her a deep bow and then stood up grinning. Merlin. Ethan was starting to get to him. But that was besides the matter at hand... Anyway... Yep. Simon wouldn't tell anyone.. No one would know of Ana's true secret.
The snow was getting heavier.
Simon still stayed outside, engrossed in their conversation. So she was a sixth year? Wow. That explained how she was so much taller than him. "Nice! How's sixth year going?" he asked. He had heard dreadful rumours about how much homework those kids had. Sheesh. One day that would be him. He'd have less time to solve mysteries and do research. He nodded as he listened to her. "I'm pretty good just sent off a letter to my younger sister. I've been a bad pen pal apparently," he explained as he folded his arms. The snow started falling down harder and harder. Visibility was becoming limited. He glanced up into the sky to look for the owl that he had sent off but he couldn't see her. He hoped that she had made it out in time. Now back to the present.... He and Ana should probably go inside right about now unless they wanted to turn into snowman and Simon didn't want to be a snowman just yet.
He gave her a kind smile, "Want to head inside?" he offered.

Thumbs up, followed by a bow? He was a bit strange this one. Although he could be bowing to play along... That was nice of him. Summoning up her most regal look, and tone Ana replied with, "Thank you young Master Simon. Your discretion on this matter is greatly appreciated and you shall be rewarded handsomely for it." That was something that a Queen might say, right?
From her position at the window she could see that more snow was falling, it looked beautiful. She wanted more than anything to be outside and playing in it right now. She wondered if Simon liked playing in the snow? She'd ask him if he'd join her after answering his question.
"Sixth year is going well I guess. There's a lot of homework to keep on top of but it isn't as stressful as fifth year or seventh year, from what I've heard." Terry certainly seemed to be busy and she'd take the lack of time they spent together personally if she didn't know how busy he was trying to ensure his grades would be high enough for him to do what he wanted. As she mused on that a gust of wind came through the window and Ana couldn't stop herself from shivering. If she was feeling the temperature drop she couldn't help but think that Simon must be freezing. "I get that from my brothers and sisters too. Always asking why I don't write more," she shared, giving him another smile before looking back out the window.
Oh no. Not good.
"Simon we need to get somewhere else right now," Ana told him, just as he finished asking her if she'd like to head inside. Jumping from the ledge she'd been sitting on Ana grabbed her fellow Slytherin's hand and began to drag him towards the Owlery steps as fast as she could walk. Sparing another glance towards the window she couldn't help but show how worried she was. That was a blizzard forming and while she wasn't too worried about being caught in one herself she wasn't going to let the boy with her get caught out in it.
For all Ana loved Winter she should never let herself forget that despite being lovely it was also dangerous.

Jasmine knew that she was taking a big chance going up to the Owlery in this crazy weather, but she had to do it.......for herself.......for closure. She wasn't sure if any owls would even be around, but she hoped that she could find the snowy owl that she had used before. Snowy owls weren't bothered by the weather, they had survived the arctic.
Entering the Owelry, she feared that her trip would be unsuccessful. It would be a shame to risk detention for nothing. Jasmine knew that she had to make this quick. She looked around searching, hoping to find the owl. The stars must have been aligned because by some miracle, he was there. Jasmine called to the owl and he flew down to her immediately. Reaching up, she tied her letter to his leg. "Take this to the place that you went before." Hopefully, he would remember. Hopefully her letter would reach its intended target, hopefully.
SPOILER!!: Jasmine's letter
Dear Cris,
I am writing because I don't know what else to do. My heart is broken and I feel like I will go crazy if I don't gt some kind of closure. You left without saying goodbye and I think that hurt me most of all. Every day I sit and wonder why you would leave so suddenly. If it was something bad, you could have told me. Maybe I could have helped you in some way. If you no longer wanted me as your girlfriend, you could have told me that too. My heart would still have broken, but at least I would know. Now I am just filled with questions. Why?
You made me so happy. You gave me the best days of my life so far and I feel lost without you. Everything around here reminds me of you and it is so very hard. Sometimes I feel that I just can't go on without you, but I know that I must. I hope this letter reaches you because I want you to know how I feel.
I miss you every moment of every day. I can't imagine that my life will ever be the same without you. I love you Cris with all my heart and I always will. Please come back to me.
With all my love,
Jasmine
Jasmine watched the owl fly away into the blizzard and hoped that he would find his way. With a sigh, she hurried back into the castle.

The owls have been restless for days now thanks to the polar vortex wind chill sweeping over the grounds and through the Owlery. The howl of the blizzard terrifies them, causing them all to take flight and brave the unforgiving weather. Hooting and flapping their wings, it was only a matter of minutes before the Owlery was vacant of all its feathery residents.
To anyone who happened to look out of one of the windows of the castle overlooking the Owlery, they would see the parliament of owls flying towards the direction of Hogsmeade.
What appeared to be a 5'2" bundle of blankets with feet approached the owlery after what felt like the longest trek ever from the basement level of the castle. But it was no ORDINARY bundle of blankets. It was, in fact, one Tobias Tempus, though you'd have been forgiven for not realising this on sight. This heap of blankets was, for example, lacking that essential bounciness that always seemed to account for most of Toby's presence. The fourth year was wrapped up in the blankets from his bed as though he was ill with the flu or something, though that wasn't the case.
Still all wrapped up, which served to guard him against the cold as well as being an interesting fashion statement, Toby braced himself and pushed open the door. He dashed in, squinting around the storm-ridden room. At least he'd had some forewarning about the weather in this room, it meant he was prepared and could quickly dash in and out to send his letter.
Or so he thought.
Literally as soon as he stepped inside, Tobias became aware of the ENTIRE OWL!CONTENTS of the room taking flight and FLEEING THE CASTLE. ABANDONING THE FREEZING SHIP.
Toby's eyes went wide in horror and he flung the blankets off of himself, running to the window and skidding on the icy floor as he went. He was still in his pyjamas, and his hair was wild and sticking in every direction.
"NO!" the fourth year screamed after the feathered fiends, a mixture of panic and... was that rage?... in his voice. "WAIT!" In one hand, Toby still held the unsent letter to his grandmother, and he waved it at the retreating owls in futility. "My letter..."
But no. They'd gone. And if he'd just gotten here a few SECONDS earlier, he'd have been able to send the letter. But no.
In an uncharacteristic moment of pure blind temper and desperation, Toby kicked out at the wall and let out some kind of animalistic cry of rage that would have surely emptied the owlery of its occupants had they not already flown away (not that it would have been heard over the howling of the wind). He regretted the kick instantly, and clutched his foot whislt howling in pain, which soon turned to another cry off anger out of the window and into the void. Just a few seconds earlier.
... Wow. So that had been thrilling. Toby hadn't actually lost his temper like that in... ever. It wasn't much, really, but for him? Very out of character. He stood there, still at the window, foot throbbing as he fought back what felt horribly like tears.
It was cold here. Freezing. And there was no reason to be up here.
Still feeling a mixture of completely outraged and on the verge of bursting into tears, Toby stomped back to his now probably filthy pile of blankets, pulled them back around himself and left the owlery before anyone could see him like this. He needed to be alone for these particular emotions.
The owls would come back soon, right? Right?

There was only so much a kid could do INSIDE before they eventually got to a state where they was bored enough to do their homework.
Kyroh was at this state.
The only GOOD thing about this homework however was that it involved two things he thought was PRETTY cool now. 1. MAGIC and CHARMS at that. and 2. BEING WARM! With his red miniature dragon on top of his shoulder Kyroh ran up the tower steps and into the Owlery. The room was deserted, no owls, no people, all that was left were feathers and droppings. Shivering as he looked around, the first year pulled out his wand. The dragon on his shoulder made a slight growling noise and Kyroh bobbed his head in agreement. "I know Ramsey, It does look strange without any owls here." What was an OWLERY with no owls? Just an empty room with poop. "But maybe if we can warm this place up when the owls come back they will be happy."
It was a GOOD plan right? Walking over to the closest wall Kyroh pointed at it. He had to get this charm RIGHT. He hadn't been able to master it in class so he had to know right? He just had to. "Caelum Saepio!" The first year declared his hand tracing a delicate sideways eight at the wall. He waited, but only for a few seconds before trying again. There was no time to waste! Concentrate. And perform. This time his attention was on a smaller part. A mere 30 centimetres of space on the wall. "Caelum Saepio!" Repeating the motion again, he waited. And waited. And just when he was about to cast again a faint fog appeared right where the spell had been casted.
"I DID IT!!!!!!!!" Kyroh yelled excitedly, causing the dragon to taught flight. "Oops. Sorry Ramsey. Don't be scared. We have to go and warm up the rest of the castle." Not even waiting until the toy returned back to it's spot he ran back down the steps.
