Just off to the left of the Restricted Section, tables and chairs have been arranged to create a large square shaped study area. Various reading materials have been placed on the tables ranging from faded newspapers, to thick history books, to scrolls, and the most peculiar of all in the center of the table; a codex taken from deep within the Restricted Section.
Professor Flamsteed is seen standing by one of the windows with his right shoulder leaning against the cold wall of the library. His expression seems neutral at first, but were one to get close enough they would see his jaw was clenched and perhaps even hear the faint sound of his back teeth grinding against one another.
If you've stumbled upon this area on purpose, hoping to assist with the extra credit research mentioned in the lastest Astronomy lesson, then you are in the right place. If you happened here by accident, stick around anyway. Your assistance will be needed.
"Maybe it's worth going around and searching the castle for runes like in that picture?" Toby pointed at it. "We learnt how to sort of reveal and break curses last year, right? Maybe it's something to try as well as the... other stuff." The whole fighting the Dark Arts stuff. Maybe it was a personal thing, but Toby prefered runes. No conflict plz.
It seemed as though Professor Airey thought the whole chort thing was serious enough to warrant sending a patronus to Professor Romanos, and that... that made Toby feel uneasy. He knew it wasn't his choice, be he would have preferred fighting runes, not dark creatures.
Now he thought he understood Soph's worried vibes.

Looking for runic engravings is not what we need, the runes could be obsolete, we need to look for active runes. Mr. Tobias and maybe a couple more students can join me." Was a memo about a meeting she missed?

Well, there you go professors. Straight from the victim herself. Whatever it was out there, it was fast. Ethan felt warm all of a sudden, by just thinking of the possibility that they will face these chorts sooner or later. He knew exactly what to do. Mhm. Ethan nodded at Cassia as if to say thanks for the added information, and returned his attention to Flamsteed, Romanos, and Botros.
Finally, some action! Even if it doesn’t involve any defensive spells, at least finding active runes around the castle would be more productive than throwing more theories on the table. It seems that they have two issues here, and Ethan decided to go with the former. Stepping up to the plate without second thoughts, “I’ll join you and Tobias, professor.” He said as he inched closer to the aged man, then grinned at Toby.
Is Simon Watson coming too? He better join. Just saying.

Jasmine periodically looked up from her book, trying to take in all that was going on around her. Things were getting crazy with all the theories being tossed around and Professor Romanos being summoned. All of his Chort talk was kind of freaking her out. If it was a Chort that had attacked her group in the Forbidden Forest, Jasmine was glad she didn't know it at the time.
Thus far, Jasmine's research had turned up zero information that was helpful to their situation. She kept digging, hoping for a breakthrough of some sort. Better to keep sifting through the references. Jasmine was certainly not going to be helpful on the rune search. Keeping an ear to the crowd, she turned her attention back to the books.

That twinkly eyed look from Botros was akin to about seven shoulder pats. He beamed super widely at the look of appoval and subconsciously puffed out his chest a little bit. Toby was also super into the prospect of going around and searching; keep on moving, right? Right. He nodded frantically as soon as the suggestion was voiced.
"I can do that," Tobias smiled, trying not to look to enthused, in case someone interpreted his eagerness to get moving and searching for runes as not taking things seriously. Because he did. He did take things seriously. "It might be both things too, after all. Never can be too sure, right?" Toby was just glad he was steering clear of this Chort business for a little while. It gave him the shivers in the way that the pervasive cold in the castle did now.
He caught sight of Ethan's grin and returned it with a nod of his head. Botros was mentioning getting a move on, so Toby decided to just go ahead and leave his schoolbag here, but of course bring along his wand and textbook.
"I'm ready whenever, Professor." Once they had any others joining them, yep.

While Sophie thought the chort talk was great and all, it got a whole lot better when suddenly Tobes was saying a lot of words. A lot of words about runes and chorts and, though what he was saying wasn't particularly cheerful, she couldn't help the smile that was creeping onto her face.
Look at him. Being a hero.
Then Romanos the chort expert was there and Botros was ready to lead a small fleet of troops to go rune hunting and yes she absolutely wanted in on that.
"I'll come, too, sir," she volunteered, her hand raised briefly as her gaze turned to Botros with apprehension. First, a crew of Tobes, her long lost brother Ethan, and Botros? Too cool to pass up. But the man knew she she was a newbie to his class, so that probably counted against her - would he believe in her enough to let her come along anyway? Certainly he knew she knew a lot, she just wasn't the best at applying it yet, but... what better way to improve in something than to have some hands-on real world experience with it, hmm?
She might've batted her eyes a little, just for a second, hopeful that he wouldn't turn her down. Pretty pleeeease?

Professor Romanos was here now, and there was more talk that Lux didn't really grasp. What she did get was that a Professor Botros was asking for a people to help him and Tobias do something involving active Runes. Wiping her eyes, she had to volunteer.
"I would like to go too. The Chorts hurt my boyfriend and I want to help stop them." And kill one while she was at it, but that thought wasn't said aloud.

"Professor, the passage speaks about Morgan La Fay, a five month winter, winter's wrath, and more," he explained as he pointed to the excerpt of the epic, the description, and the image.
He took a deep breath and then continued. "Then we wondered if those Runes had been placed somewhere around the school and who could have done it. Finally, we got to the topic of chorts which Professor Flamsteed brought up. But chorts are territorial apparently so why would they come here? Something must have lured them..?" Yep, Simon was going to be quiet now. He promised. After explaining all of that, he took a couple steps away and observed Professor Flamsteed's and Romanos' interaction with very interested eyes.
Runic wards and blizzards? Oh my.
Giving a pleasant smile and nod of her head to Professor Botros, she took the codex from Simon, wondering if they most certainly figured out what was causing their current problem from the little she'd heard. Quite an interesting selection of runes to use if that were true. Considering how tame it was compared to others. Although, taking very close attention to the areas the Slytherin had pointed out to her, she took a seat at the table...only for her gaze to snap up to third year. And then to Airey.
Did he say...chorts? "Umm..."

"Are we going on an adventure?" If that was the case she wanted to be able to take part in it. "I volunteer to go outside and help." Oh yes. She had been wanting to do that ever since the last meeting in the library. They only let some of the older students go, and that was entirely unfair.

Now they were going on an adventure? It involved Runes, which was not a subject Hayden particularily enjoyed, however it seemed like they were just going to hunt for them and not study or write them or anything like that. "I want to help," she said eagerly. Whether or not the help of an eleven-year-old would be very beneficial was debatable but she wanted to do something exciting. And she really wanted to stop the freezing cold, eternal winter at Hogwarts. Any little thing she could do to help, Hayden was up for it. Pretty please?

Penelope gave Lux a little smile when she thanked her, and she was glad she could help. Or seemed to help at least. The Hufflepuff appeared to be feeling a little better now, so she drew her arm away as the other conversations continued to explain what was going on to Romanos. And then it seemed to be decided that a group was gonna go with Botros to look for runes. Probably a group that was actually good at that stuff...and since Penelope didn't take that class anymore, she figured she wouldn't be much help there.
But hopefully there'd be something else to do? Something DADA-y since Romanos was here and probably gonna tell them what else they should be doing? Penelope would volunteer for that.
Or at least just something that was more exciting and active than sitting here in the library. But she'd just stay silent and wait. For now.

Simon was torn. Learn more about those creepy chorts or go look for runes? Both options were exciting; however, once hearing that Ethan was going, he felt more persuaded to join that group too. Plus the boy felt more comfortable searching for runes instead of fighting creepy chorts. Ahem. He'll just be going now...
Simon turned to Professor Botros and decided to offer his help. Looking for runes would be fun- it would be like a scavenger hunt or an easter egg hunt; however, with more serious consequences. "I'll go with you guys too, Professor Botros," he nodded giving the Professor a nod and smiling at Ethan.

Having an older student go with the group looking for Runes would probably be a good idea, but Layla really didn't want to be that student. So, she stayed seated, waiting for further instruction. Because surely the professors weren't going to make those that stayed simply go back to their dorms. That would just be too cruel, since everyone had come to the library to help in the first place. Maybe they would be researching a way to check for chorts without going outside.

Soooo... Was it too late to silently and nonchalantly sneak his way out of the library? Because... Romanos was here. And he had no idea what was going on. And it looked like everyone else had this whole thing covered so? Was it too late? Would anyone noticed if he just happened to start backing up real slow and stealth-like? Except no. He couldn't just let everyone stay here when Romanos could attack at any given moment!
So for the good of Hogwarts, HE WOULD STAY! And save the day if needed. Alright, he's watching you Romanos. Always watching. He knows what you are. And he will not rest until you and your Cold One army are taken care of!!

Whoa wait. Simon’s not coming? Ethan felt his mouth go dry, and wanted to argue that he simply must come, because…you know, this is their thing. The blond boy blinked a couple of times at Professor Botros, then to Simon. Ethan slowly shrugged, feeling a bit lost because he was not going to work with his Watson.
Merlin.
Breathing in to gain his composure, he then walked towards Simon as Professor Botros headed out of the Library. He can definitely catch up with the man, given that he walks real slow. “You’ll be fine here, yeah?” he asked. You know, checking up on his best friend before he goes. “Take notes on what you find, okay? We’ll be back soon.” Ethan gave Simon a pat on the shoulder and a half-hearted grin. He just hate this moment right now.

Sigh. Any wise words from Simon before he leaves? Hmm?

Sophie was coming too? Alriiiiiiiiiight. Toby smiled right up at her, thrilled that Botros had agreed to her coming along. Again, it was a challenge not to look too happy at a time like this, but Toby supposed he managed it.
Okay, so they were all going. Apart from that girl who'd been crying, Lux, which Toby figured was for the best because she seemed to think they'd be going after Chorts? No, all the Chort business would be here, so this would be the place for her. Toby did give the girl and encouraging little smile though. If he had more time, he'd have liked to try and cheer her up a little; she seemed so sad.
Simon would also be staying behind with Flamsteed and Romanos so they could use his good ideas, which Toby thought would be a super awesome thing to hear. Though... Ethan didn't look amazingly happy about it. Oh dear.
It was at that moment that Botros led the way out, and Toby rushed over to follow, giving the other group a goodbye wave before going and walking beside the Ancient Runes professor.

No one was going outside? Then where were they going? AJ was pretty sure that she had heard somebody mentioning going outside. Maybe it had just been her imagination after all. She had been wanting to go outside for so long, maybe her mind was starting to play tricks on her. Boo. The lion was shot down either way.
AJ was just about to offer her assistance when Botros started turning people away, and she figured that she would be one of them. Hmph. "So, what are we going to do now? In here with the books, and not having any action? The lion wanted to knock down doors, and hunt chorts, whatever they were. She was tired of looking in books.
Sophie bounced to her feet, pumped and ready to go, offering Tobes a 'sup' sort of nod because SHE GOT TO GO WITH THEM. WOOP. Ethan got a look of joyous approval, too, and so did the little Hufflepuff, too, even though Sophie didn't even know the girl. Poor Lux, though. The girl seemed to be getting the short end of the stick all term. And Simon - Sophie noticed the disheartened interactions between him and Ethan. Very heartbroken looks were exchanged, particularly from Ethan - were they...?
Nah.
Closing the books she'd had sprawled out on the table in front of her, Soph hurried along to join the group, subconsciously feeling for her wand in its holster as they left.

There was no need for him to worry in the first place because number one, it’s Simon. His Watson’s an independent bloke anyway, and he knows that he will do well and will be an invaluable asset to the research team. Bro hugs were given, and Ethan didn’t know how to feel about it. He knows that deep down, Simon wanted to come.
Another half-hearted grin, and a single pat on the back, Ethan backed away and glanced at Zander. “If anything comes up in here, you guys stick together, yeah?” he said as he gestured his head towards the Gryffindor. Yes Zander, Ethan’s entrusting his best friend to you while he’s out to investigate. “Good luck, Watson.” And with that, he turned and jogged after Professor Botros and Tobias to start their search.

It seemed like she had volunteered a moment too late, because Botros had turned her down. Oh well. Lux supposed she could live with it because there were other ways to be helpful. Granted, they probably didn't involve much activity and there was no chance she'd get to kill a Chort... But she would take what she could get as long as it helped Bay.
And the Professor was being so very kind.
Giving Botros an appreciative smile as he patted her shoulder she watched as he, Ethan, Tobias, and Sophie left the room; the latter got a small smile. Lux didn't know Sophie but she seemed like a nice girl.

Well wasn't this an excellent evening?! And that's the last time he would ever attend a nonmandatory meeting ever again. Clearly it just lead to trouble. And Cold One leaders. And whatever the heck a chort thing was. Really Romanos, REALLY!?!
So yes, he was planning to save them all from her invasion, but he couldn't do it alone! GAH. All those smart people who seemed to know what they were talking about- yeah! They were all leaving. And thankfully, listening into his conversation with Ethan seemed to prove that at least on of the Slytherins would be staying. Phew! Maybe he and Simon could kick some Cold One butt together! They had proven to be quite the team after all. All thoughts of the invasion were momentarily cut off, however, as he heard Ethan addressing him. "Don't worry Ethan, we'll look out for each other," he watched as Ethan started running off and before he left the library for good, Zander called out to him "Stay safe, mate!" And he knew that he would. Ethan was a smart kid. And he had Sophie and Toby. And Botros' cane.

SPOILER!!: Simon & Medea

"Umm..."
....woah woah.
"No one is going outside, Miss Valentine." And, erm...that was...final. Right?
Especially not now with the topic of chorts being spoken of.
He took a step to the side to allow Medea to get closer to the text, standing just off to her side with both hands pressed firmly against the table to support his weight. He couldn't help but feel disappointed in himself yet again. He seemed to be that professor that had the uncanny ability to get students into more danger than out. Need we remind people of all the ice cream he had handed out several terms ago? Or that he was a carrier of the aging disease. Now, when meteorology seemed to come into play...where SCIENCE could have been the answer...he had failed them all yet again. All he had done was get the codex out of the restricted section.......whoopie scootie.
He was out of it as he nodded while Mr. Simon explained what they had found, hearing sounds but not entirely processing them. His eyes only refocused again when he felt Medea's gaze fall on him, and then they reflected sincere regret. Yeah...remember how he had said that she probably had nothing to worry about? Well...there was now an extremely high probability that he had been incorrect. That he had been...that 'w' word...and he hated being that word.
Instead of saying anything, he just gave the dark haired professor a firm nod.
Yeah...chorts...

... but yes, anyway, back to business! Botros nodded at professor Flamsteed. "I think it's worth trying. Looking for runic engravings is not what we need, the runes could be obsolete, we need to look for active runes. Mr. Tobias and maybe a couple more students can join me." Preferably those who were brilliant in class such as Mr. Mordaunt and Holden...? "We'll roam the castle's ground floor with my device, if we get anything, we'll contact you." He started to get up from his seat just as professor Romanos walked in...
... interesting. Botros looked from Flamsteed to Romanos whom he greeted with a smile and a nod. "Greetings, professor." He looked at the codex that was being passed from the student towards the lady and pointed with his thumb to the exit. "I'll leave you to it, is that okay? If there is a runic ward inflicting this blizzard on the castle, I say we get a move on, it could take quite some time to break it." And with his health, which has been getting weaker and weaker, this was going to be even more difficult.

... oh. It was only now that Botros caught sight of the weeping girlfriend. He aww'ed in his head, those kids and their intense, hormon-driven relationships were going to be the end of him. "It's okay, dear, we're just going for some runes searching now. I suggest you stay and help professor Romanos and Flamsteed in their investigation." He gave her a sympathetic smile and patted her shoulder as he passed her.
"Oh, I appreciate your enthusiasm, Simon." He grabbed the boy's shoulder and squeezed fondly. "I think you'd be of more help if you stay here and help professor Flamsteed and Romanos, though." He was the one who found the passage after all, he seemed to have a great eye for research and information revelation. He released the boy's shoulder only to pat it in a manly way a couple of times.
"Let's go!" He called out to the others and headed outside the library to grab the device from his office and then down to the ground floor where they would start their search.
His head turned towards the Runes professor as he gathered a small group to go with him to investigate - internally cringing when Miss Carrington mentioned the word boyfriend again. Not that relationships were such a bad thing, as he was discovering, but mainly he really did not want to know who was dating who.
That...and he found it odd that students somehow felt the need to refer to the other person by a label rather than there name. It was like referring to helium as 'that element' or to Jupiter as 'that gas giant'. Just seemed strange to him. But he kept such thoughts to himself, however blissful a distraction they were from his shortcomings in protecting students.
"Send a patronus if you find something," he nodded towards the elderly chap as he began to leave. Or, you know, if something went wrong...but he was trying to remain somewhat optimistic. "You guys make sure to help Professor Botros down the stairs." He was OLD and had mentioned his joints being especially strained when they had spoken in his office, so yeah. Make sure the man didn't fall and break a hip or worse.
He returned his attention back to Medea and the remaining students. Right...now what did he do with them? "Alright you lot, while they are off looking for runes I want you all to focus your efforts on looking for any additional information you can on chorts and, assuming that IS what is in fact residing in the forest...how best go about their removal..." He glanced at Medea. What that even possible? Could you just...shoo them away with a spray bottle or something like one could with felines? Spray bottle filled with hot water, perhaps?
Wand out once again, he conjured yet another roadrunner patronus, although one that was not nearly as glowing as the first (self loathing kicking in over here), and send it zooming off to inform the Headmistress of what they had discovered thus far....and request her presence.

Simon gave Ethan another nod. "Course, Zanderman and I've got this," he said smiling as he watched his Holmes walk out the door. He gave Zander a brief nod and grin. They had to prepare for the unexpected. Like kicking some Cold Ones butt? Heh. That'd be fun.
Then Professor Flamsteed told them to start looking for additional information on HOW to get rid of chorts. He blinked and then scrambled to the nearest book. He carefully checked the index of each books for anything about the chorts. His eyes widened when he found something. Battling against a chort? Ligatenous? What was THAT? "It says Ligatenous works well on a chort as it chains it. The spell is like Incarcerous... It's a simple flick. It doesn't really say what we could do from there..." he said, looking at Professor Romanos to see what she thought and then at Professor Flamsteed.

Yay, they weren't being sent away!
Instead, they were being told to research how to get rid of the chorts. Which Layla immediately jumped on..........only to find that someone had already found something. Had she mentioned that she really wanted to help here and was hating the useless feeling that other Slytherin (who's name she now knew was Simon) was giving her by finding everything first? Because that's the way she was feeling. Yet, she didn't say anything. But that kid did get a look. Seriously, give someone else a chance.
She grabbed another book out of the research pile, having abandoned the other, and started through it for anything about chorts.
