Bay walked into the classroom and said his hellos to the Professor "hello Sir" he gave the man a kind smile as he made his way over to his friends taking up his work desk he normally sat at… the chairs were something he couldn't get over.. fitting perfectly to him he sat down with a huge smile on his face. |
Kace walked into the Potions classroom and was keen on learning something in this class. He missed last lesson due to being a little ill but he was determined to give this lesson a shot. As he made his way in, he noticed the other student's beat him to it. He smiled towards them and noticed the professor was there too. He nodded and said politely, "Hello Professor I trust you are well." After he said he greeting, he went over to the back to find his proper workstation. He didn't see his friends here yet but they might come in late. He took out his notebook and started to doodle. |

Speaking of things he liked he spotted Elodie and she wasn't surrounded by other girls, this made him feel a bit more confident. He plopped into the seat next to her and looked over with his best smile on his face. "Hey, Fancy meeting you here.." he said jokingly, he was getting better at this, right? He hoped so.. Even if not he was trying and that's what mattered, wasn't it? |

Desiree walked into the not-so-familiar room for the first time in ages- it would be a lie to say it felt like home. Calming blue walls, a professor who wrote smiley faces on the board? It wasn't bad, just- different. She had to resist double checking she was indeed in Potions. A lot can change when your family decides to pull you out to travel the world for your fourth year. Not that she's complaining. Although that does make it sound a bit more thrilling than it was- most of it was spent with family in New Zealand, and sheep. Familiar or not, it was nice to be back, to walk in and send a small smile and a nod towards the professor, whose name she should probably know. But it wasn't her fault she missed the start of the term. She glanced briefly at the washbasin and thought why not? but grimaced when she saw the discolored fungus growing on the faucet. Desiree had a feeling that wasn't natural.. and could only guess that a fellow student, probably a fellow Slytherin was responsible. Not that it mattered, she could easily perform the spell, and even allowed herself a small smile at the prank. Was it immature? Sure, but who was it harming really. Instead of plopping herself near the front as she may have in the past she took a seat further back, deciding it might be more comfortable as she got into the swing of things. She had to smile again as the seat automatically suited itself to her shape. The professor had good taste at least. She didn't recognize anyone: surprise, surprise. But noticed another Slytherin in the seat next to her. He didn't seem particularly approachable so she just went about getting everything out; potions was still her favorite class after all. |
Text Cut: Replies Cosgrach shrugged to himself, checked the time and used his wand to close the door. Then, getting up, he smiled at them. "This will also be our last class for the term, I hope you will enjoy it. Before we begin brewing, I have three questions for you." He looked at their faces as he paused briefly. Then, clapping his hands once, he said "The first one is: which emotions can be used to manipulate people and how? For example, guilt is a strong manipulator. A person feeling guilty would do possibly anything to relieve his conscience. What else?" OOC: The class has started now, so please don't post your character arriving late! Instead, act as if they have been here all along. :) The class will continue about 18 hours later. |
LAST potions class? But that was LAME. Maddie frowned slightly from her seat but didn't VOICE her displeasure. She DID have questions, though. Maybe she really SHOULD pop into Culloden's office someday for a sitdown. MAYBE. Manipulating people? Maddie tapped her chin thoughtfully. The only people SHE tended to manipulate were her older brothers and THAT'S only cause they deserved it. "When you're charming you can manipulate people SUPER easy. Like you can SWEET talk people into doing things you want cause you're all swoony and people want to be your friend." YUP. "AND when you're cute but that's not really an EMOTION." NOT that she knew anything about THAT. Ahem. |
Oh, yeah, guilt. Definitely a rather manipulative emotion. Guilt is what he felt most of the time actually. Dec was aware that he could be a bit mean sometimes and the after-feeling was always there to remind him too. Honestly, he's tried to just speak of nice things, buuuuuut, that hasn't been working so far. "Love...?" The word awkwardly fell out of his mouth, "...could be manipulative if used in that way, couldn't it?" Ya know, like...'You'd do this if you love me' kind of ugly stuff. |
Nigel was here. Though he did not know why. Maybe since like Culloden pointed out it was the last potions class of the semester and Nigel wanted to make a potion. Pretty simple really. Plus it was Nigel's last term. So one more lesson of Potions would not hurt him at all. Could be fun, who knows. Ah, Manipulating People. Now that was an interesting question. If they were an idiot then it was pretty easy. But Culloden was talking about emotions. The obivous answer was sympathy. But Nigel did not really want to say that. "Not really an emotion. But appealing to their rational side works if they think logically. If you are good at making up believable facts and stories on the spot." Now that was a talent worth having. |
Potions was awesome and she was excited to see what crazy potion they would be brewing this time. AJ knew that the strength potion would be hard to beat, but she was hopeful. Hmmm.... thinking about the different emotions there was one that automatically came to mind. The first year raised her hand. "What about being sad professor? I know when I use sad puppy dog eyes my dad will do anything for me." Her mom never fell for it, but that's what her dad was for. |
Wait, what? O______O LAST Potions class?! This was not FAIR. As one of her favourite classes, Lux wanted to have as many of these lessons as possible. Depressed at this news, she didn't know how to respond to his question of how she was. Instead, she pouted. Siiiiiiigh. Manipulate people? Were they going to brew a potion that allowed you to manipulate others? Lux sure hoped not! Raising her hand, she tried to venture a guess at how else someone could be manipulated. "I don't really know if it's so much an EMOTION, but it it possible to manipulate others out of pity. Like if you make them feel bad for you, you can get them to do things." Okay, she was a fail. Just ignore her. |
manipulation.. hmmmm.. this potions class seemed like it was going to be a very good one, he couldn't wait to see what they would be doing.. Raising his hand "Professor…errrrr…sir…Fear would be a good emotion to make people do things…" he nervously looked around and then continued on "its not like i've ever done it but if someone I loved or in my family" he looked over at Lux and quickly looked back at the Professor "was in danger and i was told to do something to save them… the fear of losing them would make me want to do it". He hoped that made sense.. and he hoped that everyone didn't think he was this evil dude that was sitting there amongst them planning things.. he was Bay a good nice young man.. Bay had to Gulp…. eyes down… hopefully no one would be starring at him. |
Wait, this was the last class of term? Awww, Caleb was kind of disappointed. Culloden had grown on him hard core since his gran had left, but he was starting to get excited for this lesson. Manipulation? Hmmm? That sounded interesting for sure... He raised his hand. "I'd say love is a great way to manipulate someone. I mean, seriously, how many times have you heard of someone using love to get fancy clothes and stuff?" he said. What were those people called again? Coal diggers? |
The lesson was starting. Excellent! Wait...what? Manipulating people? Was that what the potion would be about that they would be brewing? Well, they would find out soon enough. Adi thought about the question before raising his hand. "Fear, Professor. Someone can inflict fear on another by threatening them or their families, blackmailing them or something along those lines.'' People can do anything when it came to their families or protecting their reputation. |

It was an interesting question...there were a lot of emotions he could think of, but he wasn't sure if he was only supposed to say one or anything he could think of..hmm. He just decided to go with his gut and say what came to mind. He raised his hand "Well Professor, i'm sure most would answer love which would be a good answer, but there's also Anger, Jealousy, Hate and even Happiness could be used to manipulate someone really.." But he couldn't think why someone would wanna manipulate others. Nope..that didn't sound right at all. |
Elodie gave Connor a grin as he sat beside her, and elbowed him gently at his remark. "You following me, kid?" She knew he wasn't, but heh. It was nice to have someone sitting beside her that she approved of. Emotions. Manipulation. Oh... Right. Were they going to be doing something illegal this lesson? "Upset? If someone is sad, they might be desperate enough to try anything to feel happy. Which...someone could take advantage of." Here's looking at you, Meatball. Always nuzzling whenever Elodie was having a bad day. Making her bad for HIM and doing exactly what he wanted. Why was everyone considering love? Ugh. That thing was just... Ugh. |
Dima had taken the same seat he had in the last lesson, right next to Lex and Grayson, because this was a HARD class. So he'd need help from smart people, yeah? And they were right there! Plus Mikey was... somewhere. But he didn't actually know where Mikey sat. He hoped that wouldn't earn him another ear flick. "Generosity can be manipulated," he chimed in. Did that count as an emotion? That had been a problem for him, on account of the kid liked to share EVERYTHING and often was taken advantage of in the past. Not that he really minded that either. Sharing was good! |
Text Cut: Culloden CAT WAS SITTING WITH HER. HI CAT. Sophie gave her long lost sister the brightest of smiles and her posture considerably relaxed. It was nice to have Cat there. Did Cat know how good Soph was at potions? If not, the third year was certain she'd be impressed with her today. Hehe. She was so excited with Cat's presence that she didn't even notice Culloden's friendliness with Soph's self-declared arch-enemy. Last class. Boo. At least there was a collective sort of reaction of disappointment from everyone. It was nice that everyone was enjoying the professor and his lessons. She grinned for him and set her wand down, having scourgified everything she could, and thought it was curious that he was starting out with some questions. Hmmm. Tricky. While she thought it over, some of the answers she was deciding upon were being said, so before someone else took another of her ideas, she raised an eager hand. "Trust, sir. If you know someone feels that they can trust you, you can pretty much make 'em do what you want, to some extent. Either trusting your judgment or trusting that you wouldn't hurt them." She knew she'd do just about anything for the people she trusted, no matter how large or strange their requests were. |
Last lesson? LAST lesson?! Come again? Grayson's eyebrows furrowed as he looked at the Potions master. They had just STARTED the year, more or less. He hadn't even sent home his Christmas wish list and here this man was, ready to stop teaching them for the rest of the year. What in the name of Merlin? Couldn't another class be ending early? One of the ones that required zero practical work? But noooOOOooooo! It had to be the one that was freaking interesting. Jeez Though, thinking about it, maybe THIS was why he was acting as if he had added a couple of drops of an Elixer to Induce Euphoria with his morning cup of coffee. No more kids trying to blow up his classroom because they couldn't master the fire spell correctly. If he was a professor, he'd be jolly about this too. Uh huh. The question? Easy peasy. "Guilt is a good way to try and manipulate someone," he said, his hand in the air, "If you got caught in the act of doing something you shouldn't be and you want to keep it quiet, someone can eaaaaaaasily manipulate you. Or, alternatively, if you caught someone red-handed, you could use what you know against them to achieve whatever it is you want to achieve. Manipulation. Uh huh." |
Ooooh. Norah had an answer for this one! She raised her hand eagerly and said, "Disappointment, sir. My mum can get me to do anything if she looks disappointed enough in me. Even clean my room." She shuddered slightly. Room cleaning was NOT a subject to be taken lightly, if you asked her. |
Toby didn't like this topic. He didn't like it at all. As soon as the topic of manipulation was so much as mentioned, Tobias immediately found himself struggling to hold onto the megre degree of concentration he had in the first place. Just... manipulation, y'know? It brought up all sorts of negative feelings. So Toby made no move to answer. He just sat there, bouncing his knee restlessly and twirling his quill, faster and faster as the lesson drew on. Occasionally he'd make the odd note of what someone had suggested, but for the most part Tobias just sat there, straight-faced and staring at the little smiley face Culloden had drawn on the board. |
Text Cut: Culloden The LAST class of the term?! But the school year just started! ... Oh, NO. Culloden was retiring, wasn't he?! DARN. She was really starting to like him, too. Class first, though. She would send him a box of Every-flavored Beans or something later as a send off gift. Ohh, manipulation! Sophie was going to like this class! She waved her hand in the air a little too enthusiastically. "Love," she said, "because sometimes people will do whatever their loved ones ask of them, no matter what the price." "Also, in a strange turn, I think hate would cause manipulation, too, because some people looooove to see the enemy be put in his place!" she added. |
Last lesson? But they had barely started and it wasn't even Christmas yet! Disappointed, Cris looked sadly at Professor Culloden. Determined that even though this was his last lesson, Cris decided that he would make it the best one too. So when Professor Culloden posed his first question, Cris took his time to ponder on the question, even as he listened to the examples his fellow students shared with the class. He quickly noted down all the answers before he raised his hand. "Professor I believe that happiness is an emotion that can be used to manipulate people. However in this sense, the manipulation isn't really such a bad thing. It's more like an influencing thing. If a person is happy, they want others around them to be happy too, right?," Cris paused as he looked at his fellow classmates. Yes a lot more happiness would make people feel a lot better about themselves. "Look at that smiley face you drew on the blackboard. You may have done that to invoke a smile, which I have to admit I did when I saw it. It's just a natural response. Like laughter is considered contagious, so can happiness be." Cris paused to think of an example to show how that would work out. "For example, the fact that you're in a good mood, makes us feel happy. And when we leave here happy, we could potentially pass on that happiness to our friends, or better yet, we could potentially make the next Professor happy because we're now attending their class with a happy and positive attitude." Did that make sense? |
SPOILER!!: Question 1 In Leah's mind, a sad movie was playing. She was brewing a strengthening potion, and then she was crying because the potion master had said that their second lesson was also their last. Of course, she was not crying in real life, but was close to. The second year had an answer in mind, but was not sure whether it was an emotion or not. "Greed." she said, raising her hand. She did not feel the need to explain it further, everyone would understand. |
Last...? Last Potions.... lesson? Which meant that this was most definitely her last Potions lesson ever at Hogwarts. And she wasn't even sitting with Mo. Potions was kind of their class. And this was the LAST? Oh. Cat was suddenly very, very sad about this. Though she was trying her very best not to let it show because Sophie was near and being adorable and she needed to be a good example. What was the question again? "Sadness, perhaps, depression? If someone is sad, they could be talked into basically anything if someone tried, because.. they're probably not thinking about the repercussions, only feeling what they're feeling." Cat was feeling sad now. She could easily be talked into anything to do with food. |
