Default Of Mr Kitridge

The first you see is the fishing gear hanging on pins left of the doorway. The librarian is a bit fishing obsessed so he has brought some fishing equipment if time lets him explore the great lake’s fishing possibilities. The next thing you feel is cozy warmth emanating from the roaring fire place nearby. Remembering the chilliness of the halls and rooms in the castle from his years here Mr Kitridge has taken steps to see too that at least one place is warm and comfortable. In the center of the office you see what should be a desk under all the stuff currently placed on it like charts, crammers, stacks of books, an odd telescope or crystal ball and last but not least a big bowl of candy. Behind the desk, a large comfy chair with a pillow in it is situated.

Hanging on the walls around the office are portraits of former notable librarians like Madam Pince, Madam Rowena, Angela Kohan, David Kapoor and Madam Donovan. The collection of portraits/photographs is completed with some Kitridges who've been successful in some way or other through the course of time. No office of a librarian is complete without a curvy s-shaped bookshelf.

OCC: I will not have an arrival thread so please don't clog up the thread with 'waiting to enter' posts. Have your character knock on the door and then wait for Mr Kitridge to allow you to enter or to come back later. If you have any questions or want to set up a meeting don't hesitate to PM or VM me.

Sophia did not knock to enter Leo's office. She rarely ever did so when visiting her best friend because well...he was her best friend and there was no need. His office was uncharacteristically crowded though and she raised her eyebrow at that.

"I think I might be interrupting here, but Leobald I need a word please."

Default assumes Sophia only crashed Leo's convo with Mo and Sophie.

Was that something to be congratulated on, or just an extra responsibility? It was probably a pretty hard job. Sort of like a fill-in parent for kids while they were at school. That would suck, Gwen decided. Good for him for wanting to do it.

Allowing Gwen to step in ahead of him Leo shut the door behind them when they were both inside. He didn’t want either of his pets wandering the library just this minute. "Thank you very much. I hope I can fill Professor Elwood’s shoes." Fetching a bowl of candy from one of his cupboards he offered it towards Gwen. "Would you care for some candy?" Nabbing a liquorice wand from the bowl, Leo chewed on it as he headed over to take a seat in one of the comfy chairs indicating that Gwen could take the other if she wanted to. "Now what is on your mind?" Leo wondered interestedly.

She wouldn't turn the common room upside down, though thinking about it...that might be a fun idea, she might turn it inside out or completely out of order.
Her summer? Tora repressed the wave of dislike and irritation she associated with the past summer. "It was good," was all she said on that matter. "And yours?" always good to be polite! "Did you go... fishing?" she asked after a beat and a quick look about.

Leo let out a small sigh of relief. "I’m glad to hear it. I don’t want one of your peers to march in here to complain to me over the state of the common room." Hopefully Tora was a responsible girl who cleaned up the potential messes she caused. “My summer was lovely.” Leo commented with a smile. "I went fishing with Professor Culloden actually and also hung out with Professor Thompson." And he had bought a whole new wardrobe courtesy of his best friend Sophia. "Are you looking forward to classes? Got any favourite subjects?" Leo asked curiously.

Perhaps his sense of rebellion would come out later, but it was being very quiet at the moment.
"Thank you, sir. I'll do my best," he finally responded quietly. "I'm sorry I interrupted your meeting with Sophie. I'll... let you get back to your meeting. We'll work out the rules to Mophie Ball and let you know." It didn't properly exist yet, so why NOT have a Muggle football?

Still, despite her disagreement with his rulings, Sophie nodded once. "It's nice of you to think of his safety." Because that was true. A dead Mo was not a good Mo. And then, shortly after... Kitridge did go on to say he would talk to the Headmistress about letting Mo get it back at the end of the term! Ha! She was glad she kept her mouth shut, then, since Mo's calm way with words had succeeded. Or, at least, succeeded enough for right now - Sophie, for one, would take the victory of Kitridge just talking to Truebridge about it.
But when Mo tried to leave, Sophie held onto his arm, letting her know she was coming, too, before she even spoke up. "Nah, it's okay, I should probably go anyway. We can go work out the rules of Mophie ball, hmm?" She grinned up at Mo, not entirely caring if they did go brainstorm rules, but she DID want to go with him and talk to him about what just went down and the possibilities for the rest of the term. "Nice talking to you, sir. Hope to make you proud in Gobstones this term." She saluted, then, because it seemed appropriate to salute. Totally polite of her.

"It's fine. My office is always open to you Marcus if you need someone to talk to." Leo offered. It was the least he could offer aside from talking to Headmistress Bunbury on the boy’s behalf even if he had a feeling that he would have as much luck as Mo in this matter. His lips turning into a smile "I'm really curious to hear how Mophie ball will work." Looking over at Sophie he winked "I'm sure you’ll make me proud in gobstones this year. You show some real talent with the shooter." He complimented.

Seeing Sophia approach through the open door he said to Sophie and Mo "It was really nice talking to you both. We should do it again soon. I hope you’ll have a nice day!" Moving to open the door fully to let them pass Leo waited for Sophia to come on over.

Waiting for Sophie and Mo to leave his office Leo stepped out to meet Sophia. "Actually we were just done." Suppressing the impulse to give his friend a welcome hug he said. "We can talk inside. Do you want tea or something?" And what was on her mind? Something serious?

Oh! Two pets! This was already going Gwen's way and she hadn't even started talking yet. Unless he was the kind of person who believed that different rules applied to adults. That would be not-so-good. Did she want some candy? The answer to that was always yes. No other option for the twelve year old. "Thank you," Gwen reached into the bowl for a piece of candy.

The little American girl took the offered chair. She had gone over in her head a hundred times how she was going to phrase this to get the best possible reaction, but she couldn't remember any of it now. "I was just wondering what the rules are for pets." Okay, that was bad. It said in letters they could have an owl or a cat or a toad. She wanted special exceptions. "I mean like, if someone had an unusual pet, that was completely harmless," she added quickly. She couldn't have him thinking she meant unusual like a blast-ended-skrewt. "Could they get an exception to the owls, cats, or toads only rule?"

People sometimes had pets that weren't normal. Somebody had to be the one making the exceptions. People had pygmy puffs and Gwen could swear she heard a pig in the third year dorms the other day. Her little guy, tucked away up in her dormitory had to be acceptable.

Nibbling on his liquorice wand Leo waited for Gwen to help herself to some candy. He didn’t have anything pressing to tend right this minute. A break was always welcomed. The eagle girl was here to ask him about the rule for pets at school. A rule that had changed a few times since Leo had started working for the school. "Define unusual pet?" As in what kind of pet was Gwen thinking of that was harmless, a crup? "All unusual pets need to been approved by Headmistress Bunbury and Professor Thompson before they can be allowed at the school. We don't want anyone to be at risk of getting hurt by someone else's pet and not all creatures are suitable as pets either," Hence why Javy needed to give his expert opinion in each case too. Pygmy puffs and puffskeins were harmless and thus allowed at the school just as cats, kneazles, owl, toads and rates were and some snakes.

It wasn't uncommon that students wanted to bring pets that didn't fit the criteria sent out in the term information letters but all of them had to be approved or they had to be sent home to the student's parents. Finishing his liquourice wand Leo grabbed a gummy snake from the bowl.

Gwen gulped. She had to get it approved by the headmistress? She'd never met the headmistress, but just the title seemed pretty intimidating. "Unusual like a garden gnome?" she said, raising her voice at the end as if it was a question. Maybe he could just approve it for her. That would be great. Not that she was telling him she had one. Nope, just asking if maybe it was okay if she wanted one.

She was fairly certain that gnomes were rated harmless/may be domesticated by the ministry. So far her little guy hadn't given her any trouble, so Gwen was inclined to believe that. Well, if he did approve, Gwen would have to talk to the headmistress about it. If he didn't, nobody knew she had one. Well, the girls in her dorm would probably find out pretty quickly, but Gwen didn't think they would mind keeping it on the down-low.

Tora fidgeted a bit nervously about the common room comment. Note to self: always use a cleaning spell/ repairing spell when done in common room. "You don't have to worry, really," she said, patting her magically enlarged and lightened messenger bag. "I don't spend much of the day in the common room anyway because I really hate the doorknocker..." Tora mumbled that last part. One of the downsides to being a Ravvie.

"Professor Culloden and Professor Thompson like fishing as well? That's a lot of fishing professors. Do you have, like, a mini fishing league in the Black Lake?" sounded like fun, if you like fishing. Tora had never fished, so she wouldn't know if she liked it or not, but it looked like it was the kind of sport where she needed more patience than she had.

"Classes couldn't get started fast enough! I love Astronomy, which, did you see? It's the first class of the year tomorrow morning. And I'm good at Transfiguration, so I guess I like that too." she was smiling thinking about her favorite classes, while choosing to ignore her least favorites for the time being. "You have favorite classes, too, right?" she asked. There was no "Library" class so he didn't have that bias going for him.

Out of all the pets Gwen could have wondered about Leo didn’t expect to be asked about a garden gnome. Were they suitable as pets? He had only even seen them as garden pests. "I think having a garden gnome at the school could be okay but really I'm not the expert and it isn’t my place to say it is okay if Professor Thompson and Headmistress Bunbury think otherwise. They decide the rules for all pets at school." At least she didn't want to bring a dragon to the school.

"Headmistress Bunbury is nice and so is Professor Thompson," Leo reassured Gwen. "They can also give advice on what unusual creatures would be okay to have as a pet here at school." He could help too of course if Gwen wanted him to.

Having escorted Mo and Sophie out Leo head back into his office and closed the door. Heading over to the teapot he put on chamomile like Sophia wanted before he took the comfy chair across from his best friend.

Shaking his head Leo gestured to the captain badge glimmering on his desk. "No, no hard time, Mo just wanted to turn in his captain badge like Annie had ordered him to on the train to school. And Sophie wanted to congratulate me to becoming her new head of house after Callie left."

Hearing the teapot whistle loudly he got up and poured steaming tea into two tea cups. Putting the tea cups on a small tray with milk, sugar and biscuits he placed it all on the little side table on Sophia’s right for easy access. Taking one of the tea cups he offered it to his friend saying "Here you are. I’ve got some freshly baked cookies too if you’re hungry?"

Reassured Leo dropped the subject of the common room as Tora mumbled something about hating the doorknocker. Smiling he asked "Is the bronze knocker riddles giving you trouble? I liked those when I went to Hogwarts. They helped me focus my mind." Always good for spell work or brewing even.

Letting out a warm laugh Leo shook his head. "No, no I don't have a mini fishing league at Hogwarts. I doubt Professor Culloden is a fan. He just fished to keep me company." Because that is what good mates do. They hang out with you and do what you like to do even if they themselves aren’t as enthused. Next time Cosgrach would choose what they did and it could be something that Leo didn’t like very much.

Grinning at Tora’s excitement he nodded. "Yes I saw. Both of those classes will most definitely be fun." His favourite classes? Leo considered for a moment. "My favourite classes when I went to school were History of Magic, Charms, CoMC and sometimes Astronomy. It changed depending on what the lessons were on," And on the professor.

Tora made a face when Kitridge mentioned liking the door knocker. "I like the concept and I can see how it is really helpful with learning and stuff, but the riddles I get can be so abstract..." Tora explained while conveniently leaving out any mention of sometimes getting stuck outside the common room because she couldn't figure out the damn riddle. She had debated on flying a broom in through a window sometime to avoid it but hadn't gotten around to figuring out a way to do so somewhat safely. She fell silent as her thoughts wandered towards perhaps building a landing platform? And she would have to discreetly add hinges to one of the windows to it would open or she would just have to use "Reparo" on the window every time she entered the common room.

Leo nodded thoughtfully. "True the riddles can be real nut crackers at times. Try thinking outside the box or going with the most logical answer that springs to mind. If that fails then ask the Grey Lady for assistance or one of your fellow eagles." He knew from experience that the Grey Lady was very apt at solving riddles and helped him out more than once in his school days.

"So how's everything? Looking forward to classes? Got friends to hang out with?" Leo asked as a line in his attempt to get to know Tora better. The head of house he had had in his school days took care in getting to know the student’s in his house further then just by name and Leo was adamant about doing the same to the extent his other duties allowed.

A memo in the shape of a paper plane glides gracefully through the crack beneath the door, before exercising a smooth landing on the Professor's desk.

SPOILER!!: Memo!

Dear Colleagues,

It has come to my attention that we are not communicating effectively enough where student behaviour is concerned. I for one would appreciate any and all feedback regarding the Gryffindors should issues concerning their behaviour, well being or academic progress arise. I ask this so that as Gryffindor Head of House, and Deputy Headmisstress I may assist in supporting you by monitoring and managing concerns regarding the students under my care.

Please don't hesitate to contact me directly, or indirectly via memo or owl.

Kind regards,
Seren Bentley

Cassie had went into the library as her and Nessa had been for the past few months trying to keep up on things while Leo was still in the hospital wing. After working on the front desk and moving books to the carts, Cassie turned towards his office. It hadn't been opened in awhile. She assumed it wasn't messy since no one had been in it, but maybe a house elf to clean, she decided to give it a look over.

Pulling her wand she unlocked the door and headed into the office. Setting down her purse she began moving around the office just dusting it up a bit and making things nice and neat. As she glanced around the room, it was a nice office but it was missing something. She chewed on her lip trying to figure it out. "Oooooh Got it!" She snapped a bit before grabbing her wand.

Conjuring a few flowers the Divination Professor beamed. Much better, she thought as she gathered her purse. Looking once more over the office she decided that it looked good and headed out locking the door behind her.
