Default Herbology Workshop: Flesh-Eaters

Herbology Workshop: Flesh-Eaters

It was difficult to predict how many of the students would be showing up for the workshop, even more difficult still to predict how many would come for the maintenance free-for-all before hand. But considering a great number of the students expressed an interest in feeding the flesh-eaters again, she figured at least they would turn up. After all, it wasn't every day she was able to offer supervision in greenhouse eight.

Having unlocked the greenhouse and set up the work stations for the latter learning experience, Seren milled about sedating some of the more harmful specimens in the greenhouse before returning to the main area. The last thing she needed was a student losing an arm from being too eager to feed them.

With buckets of scrap meat, buckets of dung and a mound of compost laden with wood chips in the middle of the floor everything was set to go. Instead of slacking and observing, she too started by fussing over a growth of sword-lilies, snipping away at the browned and floppy leaves. A quick check of her watch showed that it was eight am... which meant students might be arriving any minute... any minute.

Guided Learning Experience:

To the workstations!
Note Taking and Preparations!
Jars at the Ready! Swab your Orchid's Column!
Make an Incision in your Dried Resin!
Hot Air Charm and Melting Resin!
Finishing Up!
OOC: This is not a lesson, it is a workshop which is optional. You do not need to be on time, as there is no penalty for tardiness. Points will be awarded for participation. Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules still apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment.

Flesh Eating Fairy Orchid?

Huh. Lux had never heard of this kind of orchid before, so of course it caught her interest. Looking at one of the flowers closely, she let out a gasp when she noticed the preserved fairy. Professor Bentley hadn't been lying when she told them that they might spot some. Not particularly fond of fairies, Lux was not bothered in the least by all this though she was sure that some of the other students would be. Looking around the greenhouse, she smiled at Bay who was working beside her. Good, this was just how she liked it: him right beside her. ^_____^

Listening carefully to what they were being told, she began taking furious notes. She never knew if this information would prove to be useful at some point. And honestly, she found it pretty interesting. After checking over everything she wrote, Lux once again inspected her plant noticing all of the flowers that didn't have fairies in them. Her gloves were on perfectly, so that was not an issue and she had all the equipment needed.

This Honorary Lion was good to go.

Whoooops, and here it was. There was always at least one in the group.

She raised her hand said, "Professor, what is so bad about fairies that you talk about a plant killing them as no big deal. I know that fairies are the flesh eating orchids food source but I think its sad they go that way based on my perception of fairies.", Bree said seriously. She then started to write notes because she did not want to fall behind. She then applied her gloves and checked that her robes covered both of her arms whole. She then looked over her work station and while doing so was relieved to hear they would not be working with orchids with preserved fairies. Seeing that all was there she waited for the lesson to continue.

Or... perhaps not quite.

"What's so bad about them?" she echoed, uncertainly. "Well nothing, as with all of Mother Natures creations, there's nothing wrong with fairies at all... but at the end of the day, everything has to eat, and it just so happens they prefer fairies..." there was nothing more to it than that. It was a simple concept. Food ate food, humans ate food, another source of life was that food.

...

"Would you say that chicken and vegetables are bad, simply because I thought to eat them last night?" It was a legitimate question.

SPOILER!!: Cris

Who would have thought something as beautiful as these orchids, were dangerous. Cris shook his head sadly even as he listened first to Professor Bentley's explanation. Writing down what she was telling them about this specific species of flesh eating plant, Cris had to reluctantly agree that the orchid's way of trapping was very deceptive indeed.

He did however cringe at how it digested its prey immediately pitying the fairy. Being slowly digested while still alive was a horrible way to perish. Cris wouldn't wish it on any living thing. But that was Darwin's Theory. Only the strong survive. Big fish, eat the little ones.

Once he had completed writing down his notes, Cris dropped his journal and his quill into his pocket, and then checked the gloves he was wearing to ensure that they were securely pulled up, before pulling his shirt sleeves all the way down and tucking the ends under his gloves.

Having done that, he moved over to the potted orchid sitting at his workstation and leaning over it, he began examining the flowers. Identifying a few that did look like they were fairy full at the moment, Cris took note of their locations.

Lastly, he made sure that his workstation has a swab, a scalpel and a jar available for use. Yep. They were all present and accounted for. Now all they had to do was wait for the Professor to demonstrate what to do next.

As he waited, he heard a young Gryffindor ask Professor Bentley a question. Ahhh...here was another humane soul. While Cris waited for their Herbology Professor to reply to her question, Cris decided that he would ask one of his own.

"Professor I know that here's another example of Darwin's Theory of Evolution, but why is there a need to make the prey suffer after it has been captured? Granted the fairy has been immobilized but from the sounds of it, the fairy is still alive while being broken down." Cris paused to keep his emotions in check. He could feel a lump forming in his throat just at the thought of the fairy suffering.

"Am I wrong? Does the fairy die almost immediately before the breaking down process starts? Or does the orchid require for it to be almost alive during the process?" Cris hoped the Professor would say the former.

And it didn't surprise her that once one person voiced their concerns that others would follow... or at least, one other. She appreciated that they were being so considerate of the fairies, and asking questions was a practice she condoned.

"Ahhh, not at all," she replied, shaking her head. "It doesn't die immediately, more like it becomes petrified... loses consciousness and I assure you it doesn't feel any pain. Research conducted in Italy and the Amazon where they have been successfully introduced have found that fairies that have been coated in resin are in fact lifeless and are not able to feel any longer." The research also indicated that there was little that could be done to bring them back from petrification once the process was complete, the digestive enzymes saw to that.

...

But on a better note, it was time to get started!

"The process is fairly simple, if not a little messy, so I do urge you to be cautious and should you get any on your clothes be sure to scourgify them immediately, dragon hide is extremely durable to the substance but if you have non-standard gloves I would recommend you borrow a proper pair from the stores cupboard by the entrance."

Turning her own potted orchid slightly so it was facing the students side on, Seren took up her swab and picked up her jar. "While they prefer fairies, the Fairy Orchid also feeds on various insects, the resin it excretes is greater however, when fairy dna is detected on its column." She indicated to the centre of the orchid flower with a gloved finger.

"The swabs you have in front of you have fairy dna on them, so what I'd like you to do... is take it, ad very gently rub it against the orchid flowers column until the lilac cololured resin begins to discharge... like so," she mused, extending her swab to the centre of the flower and giving it a gentle rub there. It didn't take long for the resin to begin to ooze, and while elevating the swab stick, she placed the jar beneath the orchids lip, ready to collect the substance. "Collect it as it trickles slowly.. it takes a little while to get started, and its surface will soon solidify, when that happens, remove the swab and wait for the next instructions..."

Where they following her lead? Seren observed them as she continued to hold the jar for the resin.

OOC: The next step will come in approx 22-23 hours.

Whoa. That flower’s got fairies in it? Shouldn’t fairies and flowers be the best of friends? Well, that’s how it is being portrayed in the muggle world, yeah? But the idea is a bit crude. Not that he was going to say it out loud. He knows that ‘one must die so that others may live.’ Or something close to that. Heh. As instructed, Ethan inspected his gloves, pulled his sleeves down so that his arms are covered. Swab thingamajig? Check. His scalpel? Check. His jar? Ethan got hold of it and showed it to Simon. Lastly, he checked his orchid if it had any fairies in it. The Slytherin’s eyes widened as he saw at least five fairies preserved in it. “Wowzers.”

***

Ethan watched Professor Bentley extract the substance from the flower as he held on to his jar and swab. The Slytherin examined his own swab and raised his question. Hand up. “Professor? How do you exactly get a fairy’s DNA on the swab?” The Slytherin asked as he eyed the special stick. As he waited for the professor’s answer, Ethan gently rubbed his swab against the flower’s column with his left hand, and raised the jar up to the lip of the orchid with his right and waited for the substance to come out.

Seren refrained from laughing out loud, instead she grinned brightly, her jar still slowly filling... though the resin was stiffening to the point where she would be up to the next step shortly.

"No fairies were harmed in getting their dna... all it takes it a pat on the wing or body or if they're kind enough a lick or a spit." Easy as, and for the most part they were very accommodating.

Ohhhhh nooo. It was just as she feared. There were fairies inside those plants. Jasmine was disturbed, grossed out even. It was one thing for plants to eat rats or even to take a bite out of a witch or wizard.......but to eat a fairy......slowly. Even though the Professor said that they didn't feel pain......still. It was hard for Jasmine to wrap her mind around the whole process. Yeah the Circle of Life, Hakuna Matata, whatever. She was not looking forward to seeing those little fairy outlines as she checked her plant.

Jasmine wrote the information down in her notebook like she could ever forget this . She checked her gloves and made sure that her sleeves were pulled completely down. Then she looked at the utensils on her workstation. Everything was accounted for. Finally, Jasmine had to check her plant. She tried hard to concentrate on the flowers that did not contain fairy remains. Yes, there were several.......just focus on those....only those.

Professor Bentley announced that it was time to begin extracting the resin from the plants. Jasmine listened to the instructions and took her notes. Taking a deep breath, she focused on the little flowers. Grabbing her swab, Jasmine began to rub it gently on the flower's column and then in the center of the flower. Up and down, up and down she rubbed waiting patiently not really for a response. Finally, she noticed the desired purple resin begin to drip from the plant. Jasmine placed her jar beneath the orchid's lip just like the Professor demonstrated. Holding the jar steady she waited as the resin slooooowly dripped from the plant. After waiting for what seemed like forever, Jasmine noticed the surface beginning to harden and she removed her swab. Now all she had to do was wait for the next instructions........ and think about fairies.

If you look closely, you might notice that the orchids have uniquely shaped growth protruding out from above its lips... and suspiciously in the shape of a fairy.

"You'll need your gloves on still... your wand and any note taking equipment you have brought with you."

OOC: Students assemble! The activity will ACTUALLY start in 12 hours.

Now was as good a time as any to get started, the others could catch up when they were ready.

"Today what I wanted to do was introduce you to a curious plant... the Flesh Eating Fairy Orchid... and as the name may suggest, it is flesh eating and it is particularly fond of fairies." She was almost bracing herself for a student to cry or protest or try to harm the orchids themselves.... almost, because she had more faith in her students than that. "Of course, as with anything, all organisms are part of the circle of life and these particular orchids originate from the glades of Northern Italy where they naturally adapted to their environment and developed in a way to overcome the fairies that plagued the area." It was then that she indicated to the specimens in front of them all.

"If you look closely, some of them may even display a preserved fairy or two... or three..." some more than others no doubt. With her gloved fingers she identified and stroked a couple that were encased on her own. "Unlike some of the other flesh eaters we have studied, the Flesh Eating Fairy Orchid has a subtle and gentle method to meeting its dietary needs. Luring the fairies in with their sweet scent, the Fairy Orchid releases a lilac resin which first acts to immobolise the fairy before then breaking it down to be absorbed into the orchids column. The process may take up to a month to complete and once the nutrients have been obtained from the source, the resin shell is then dropped and decomposes."

Pausing at intervals to ensure students were able to copy down any notes that they needed, she waited before proceeding.

"The resin itself may be used in a number of potions particularly in those that aid digestion, our task today will be the extraction of resin from these charming orchids.."

Extraction! It could be considered an art form at the best of times, but it was an easy enough skill once you knew how. "The first thing I'll get you to do once you've finished your notes, is to inspect your orchid and identify a few of the flowers that do not already contain preserved fairies... those are the flowers that we will be focusing our efforts on. Secondly, could I please get you to double check that you have your gloves on well ensure your arms are covered by sleeves, the last thing you need is resin making contact with your skin... it will result in a moderate burn. Please also make sure that you have on your work station a swab stick, a scalpel and a jar."

And then they could get started.

OOC: Check your orchids! Check your gloves/sleeves! Your utensils! And ask Q's if you have them. We will be moving on in approx 19 hours.

Gathering at the workstation with her wand and journal, Leah listened to the professor and took notes. She was slow at taking notes and therefore could not get a detailed look at the plants. She did not even need to make sure that she was wearing long-sleeves, it was freezing cold outside but she felt warm.

O_o Take fairy DNA? Cool. She grabbed her swab uncertainly and began to rub it gently in the center of the flower, imitating the professor. Nothing was happening? Leah frowned, but after a while the purple substance appeared. She placed a jar underneath and collected it. Merlin it was SLOW. Hurry up! The second year tapped her foot on the ground more than two hundred times before the surface finally solidified. She removed the swab and stared at the lilac substance, waiting for the next instructions.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Adi watched as Professor Bentley did her thing. Was it disgusting or fascinating when the resin was discharging. Kind of both. Right! Adi was sure he could manage this. Once more he made sure his dragon hide gloves were secure and that his arms were covered before grabbing the swab.

Just like his Professor had done, the boy rubbed the swab against the flower's column. Soon, the resin began to flow slowly. he hastily shoved the jar towards the orchid plant to collect lilac coloured stuff.

Afterwards, the hardening followed and Adi removed the swab. All done.

Taking off her gloves so she could hold her quill, Norah prepared to start her note-taking on these Orchid things. Wait what? They ate fairies? But fairies were so little and pretty and MAGICAL. She eyed the plant disdainfully. Couldn't it eat, like, spiders or something? She would fully support a plant that ate spiders, yep. It was a shame, though, because those fairy-killers really were pretty. Noting Professor Bentley's warning about burns, she quickly pulled her gloves back on and edged away from the fairy-killer, opting to inspect the flowers from a healthy distance.

Norah was forced to stand on her tiptoes to see the professor's demonstration. WOAH, fairy DNA? Could they clone the fairies? Pretty please? She wanted a fairy to keep for herself. She could name it Marge and they could play together all day! Her smile faltered slightly at the realization that the professor would notice if she kept the DNA instead of using it to get that plant goo stuff. SIGH. Being an eleven year old can be really hard, especially when you don't have a pet fairy.

She picked up the DNA swab and wiped along the orchid as instructed. A pale purple goo pooled at the lip and began to spill down. Not sure if she should be fascinated or disgusted, she avoided thinking about the weird goo altogether by grabbing her jar and positioning it where it could catch the lilac resin. When it hardened, she removed the swab and looked around at the rest of the class. Could they see more fairies now?

Flying fairy DNAs. Or something like that. Ethan nodded as he kept his eye on the flower, and continued to rub the flower's center with his swab. A few more rubbing motion and the resin started to pour out from the center then down to the flower's lip.

The Slytherin watched as the goo continued to flow out of the flower, and observed if there was any sign that the surface was already hardening.

As soon as he saw this, Ethan pulled out his swab and waited for the next set of instructions. Hmm. The boy looked at his fellow Slytherin and checked on how he was doing. So far, so good yeah?

Simon jotted a couple more notes down about the extraction process. Slipping his gloves back on, he continued to listen to Professor Bentley. The swabs had fairy DNA on them? Oh sweet! That was really cool. Before he could start on his work, he heard Ethan ask a question about how the Professor could have gotten the fairy DNA. He took a moment to stop what he was doing and listen to the answer. The Professor's response of 'No fairies were hurt during...' almost made him chuckle but he kept it in. It reminded him of all those movies he'd seen back at home where the film company reassured the audience that no animals had been hurt.

*Ahem*
He was getting distracted. Focus, Simon, focus!

Taking the swab of fairy DNA in his left hand (as he was left handed) and holding the jar in his right, Simon readied himself for the next step. He rubbed the swab closely and very gently against the orchid flowers column. In a matter of seconds, the lilac coloured resin began to discharge. He placed the jar where Professor Bentley had and then waited for the resin to collect.

The resin slowly made its way down the sides of the jar and into the bottom. Soon enough, it began to speed up a little. Before Simon knew it, the surface had started to turn into a solid so he carefully removed the swab, placed it on the bench so it was out of the way, and waited to hear what Professor Bentley would tell them next.

Grayson had NO remorse OR concern for the fairies that had been eaten by this plant. It happened. So what? They were only FAIRIES. He also didn't care about how messy this process was but he did take heed of the fact that Scourgify would be his best bud if things went wrong. Thanks, Scourgify. He didn't want any of this resin on himself, thank you. He also wouldn't want this on certain people he could mention.

Taking the swab, Grayson leant closer and started rubbing it against the orchid flowers column. Coooooome on, little flesh-eating plant that wasn't actually THAT dangerous. Produce the resin you're meant to. And produce some extra too, mkay? Because he wanted to use some. Potions, HELLO?! He'd be careful about it and whatnot. And more than likely show it to Culloden and ask him................ questions.

Staying in your thoughts was dangerous because it made you miss things, like the fact that lilac-coloured resin was falling out of the plant.

MERLIN.

Muttering something under his breath, the fourth year grabbed his jar and held it out under the orchid's lip. It was trickling slowly. No, like glacial speed. Jeez, he was going to out here all day at this rate. Not even sending the plant telepathic messages was helping. Tricky one, this one was. Not as tricky as his cloud back in Transfiguration but still quite tricky. And it was taking everything in him to be as patient as possible.

Once the substance had solidified, Grayson removed the swab and eyed the resin in his jar. Not baaaaaaaaaad. There was a fair amount in there. Now he just had to wait for the next set of instructions.

Jotting down some more notes, Lux was eager to get started with this activity. Fortunate for her, she had bought proper gloves so there was no need for her to exchange for another pair.

Rubbing her swab gently against the flower column, she watched as the resin started to discharge. Grabbing the jar, she held it in her left hand and watched as the resin poured inside. This was pretty interesting, even though she had to be careful not to get any on her clothes. As soon as it started to solidify, she carefully removed the swab and waited for further instructions.

Ugh. Messes. Zander did not need any messes thank you very much. Especially with this poison resin. Yeah. Scourgify is good. Scourgify is the best. You go scourgify, four for you scourgify. Fairy dna? That sounds kinda... cool?

The Gryffindor carefully picked up a swab and leaned towards the orchid. Carefully, because again, he did not want plant resin touching his skin. Nope. Not today. He gently swabbed one of the leaves of the flower, waiting for the resin to discharge... Except it was taking an awfully long time. How long was this supposed to take? Because there must be something wrong with his plant.

PROFESSOR IT MUST BE DEFECTIVE THERE'S NO RESIN! Oh wait, here it comes! The lilac colored resin began to ooze into the jar and it was taking it's timeeee. Gah. So slow.

She felt her cheeks grow warm again and was tempted to cover her face with her hands because DARN CHEEKS kept making her seem all embarrassed. Ahem, she was not embarrassed. It's just not every day that you're complimented by someone old, y'know. Figuring it was a good time to return to her task, Norah resumed her methodical sweeping. Nothing to see here, nope.

Oooh they were going to do stuff! Norah set aside her broom with a little more enthusiasm than she cared to admit and and made her way to the nearest workspace. Gloves? Check. Quill? Check. Parchment? Check. What was she missing? Oh yeah, her wand. Pulling it out of her bag, she looked towards the professor and smiled. Starting time! YEAH!
Marigold nodded and stuff at Norah, beaming at her too. She would be her little firstie that Marigold could teach how to thrive and YES. PLANS.

But first gloves and watching activity explanation. She didn't feel that bad for the fairies, actually. It was painless and the plants had a right to live as well, didn't they? She took the swab and gently rubbed it against the plant about ten times before the sticky resin started to be released. With a jar, she caught enough of the resin for the jar to be half full. It was a small jar, but still.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

She'd been happy enough feeding the flesh eaters earlier but then they'd moved to some note taking that she was almost sure she wouldn't be bothered with scribbling down...until the Professor began talking and half of it actually sounded interesting. Though...she did wonder, wasn't it bad karma eating a fairy? They were so....well...they were fairies. It was like punching a Puffer. They were just some things that you didn't do because they weren't good ideas but whatever plant. Do whatchu have to do.

Finally moving on to more action, Lex slapped on the gloves that she'd been waiting til now to put on. No sense having them on while she was writing, they'd just get in the way or something.

With the gloves secured she walked over to the orchid plant thingy with her jar and swab that had...fairy DNA on it? "Professor? How'd you get the fairy DNA on the swabs?" Just a curious question as she ran it along the orchids flower. It was meant to start secreting stuff and she could bet it would feel cheated by the end of all of this but that wasn't her problem. Nope. She collected the resin as it trickled slowly into her jar.

Was this enough? It didn't seem like more was coming so she waited for the next set of intructions.

Lucy took notes of the instructions. Now she had to to start extracting the resin from the plants.
She took her swab and she rubbed it with a trembling hand on the column of the flower and in the center of the flower, following the instructions of the Professor..
She saw the resin begin to drip from the plant and Lucy raised her jar beneath the lip of the orchid..The resin came out from the plant and Lucy filled up her jar..
When the surface started to solidify she took away her swab.
"Well done!", she thought!

There's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for| LOTR|Whovian|Sherlock Fan

Cris listened attentively as Professor Bentley replied to his answer. He breathed a sigh of relief. Being petrified and not knowing that you were, was definitely lots better than the way he had envisioned the fairies would be suffering.

"Thank you for clarifying that for me, Professor. At least it was painless. That's all that matters," Cris smiled and nodded his thanks.

....and then it was time for them to begin removing the resin. Cris watched closely as Professor Bentley demonstrated the proper way to do it. On hearing that the resin was a messy substance, Cris was glad he had his dragon hide gloves on. He picked up his quill and took notes as the Professor first showed how to get the flower to excrete the resin using the swab, and then how to collect it.

Then it was their time to carry out the task. Reviewing his notes, Cris reached for a swab and began to rub it against the column of the flower ever so gently over and over again until something sticky began oozing out from the top. It was purplish in color so Cris assumed that it had to be the resin.

He quickly reached for a jar, and placed it under the lip of the orchid's petals as he slowly pulled up on the swab. He watched patiently as the resin first trickled out a drop in intervals into the jar, before beginning a steady trickle flow. He continued to hold it in place until the last drop fell and the surface of the resin began to harden. He then removed his swab and looked up at the Professor, waiting to hear what she would tell them to do next.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Non-standard gloves? Kevin checked the gloves he was holding in his right hand and didn't think he had the right one. So he waited till the Professor was done talking and then turned around to walk back to the cupboard near the entrance of the Greenhouse. As he passed the Fanged Geraniums, the Gryffindor grinned at them and actually didn't want to go back to the others but feed these plants some more.

Grabbing the right gloves, Kevin did come back to the work stations and looked at his orchid in front of him while he snapped on the gloves around his hands and made sure that his sleeves were rolled down. He didn't feel like visiting the hospital wing...

Grabbing the swab stick off of the table, Kevin looked at the Professor as she demonstrated what to do. He moved the swab to the center of the orchid and rubbed the area until the resin began to ooze. Wait...what was he supposed to do now? The boy looked up quickly to see that the Professor was now holding the flower above a jar and let the substance trickle slowly in the the jar.

Okay got it. Kevin grabbed his own jar and moved the orchid above it but as he did so, some resin had dropped on his sleeve and while holding the flower pot in one gloved hand, he grabbed his wand with his other hand and pointed it at his sleeve. "Scourgify" he said while pointing his wand at his left sleeve and watched it get cleaned up.

Now...how long did they have to wait for this?

Fairy DNA? Maddie picked up the swab in front of her and eyed it curiously, hearing a classmate ask exactly wha she'd been thinking. How DID you get the DNA from the fairies? She tilted her head and her eyes fell on Bentley, waiting for an answer.

Lick or spit. Fairies DID that? The small brunette didn't know TOO much about fairies but she didn't think they went around spitting like her BROTHERS seemed to do when they were out and about. It was PUZZLING, why boys spit so much. The twelve year old wondered what would happen if she rubbed THEIR spit DNA on the poor fairy orchid. The thing would probably WILT on the spot. Heh.

MOVING on. The little claw watched Bentley's demonstration with interest and when the Professor finished, Maddie pulled her jar towards her with her free hand. She was SO ready to start. YUP. Let's DO this thing.

Rubbing the swab very gently on the orchid's column, the first year watched with wide eyes and waited for the thing to start to ooze. Any time now, orchid!

She had been so focused on the plants in front of her that Beverly almost missed the tiny person sitting nearby. Blinking at her at first, then at the plant, then back again at the girl, Beverly nodded. It DID look like a face. "It is a face," Beverly said. What? It WAS. She would have dared the girl to try and pet it, but...Bentley was already talking.

Darn.

Lots and lots of information. Beverly did her best to jot it all down. These Fairy Orchids sounded interesting, what with their luring skills. Something about that, it stuck to her mind. She made extra notes for herself. When it came to the mention of potions, she underlined stuff several times. All the knowledge on potions, she wanted it.

Finishing her notes and making sure her gloves reached up to her forearms - her dad had them specially made for her for the best of protection - Beverly tucked her long sleeves under them. She was READY.

Waiiiiit.

Swab stick: check. Scalpel: check. Jar: check. Now she was really, really ready.

Fairy DNA? How in the world did they do that? Hearing another student ask that question she sent her gaze over to Professor Bentley, awaiting the answer. Arista picked up the swab in front of her and looked at it curiously.

They would lick or spit on it.... Could they do that? That was odd.. But really awesome!! The little lion watched Bentley's demonstration with interest and when the Professor finished, Arista grabbed hold of her jar and brought it close to her. She was soooo doing this thing!! She grinned and looked down at it.

Rubbing the swab very gently on the orchid's column, the first year watched waiting for the thing to ooze... "Pwease give me you DNA, fairy!!" she smiled.

Ok, everything about these flowers was grossing Caleb out. He had no desire to see any petrified fairies, and he was not in the mood to get oozed on either. It was basically the equivalent of the flower DROOLING into the jar. DROOL.

Prodding his lilac to check inside the flowers, he found a few that didn't have any petrified fairies - and a few that did. Shudder. Those poor little fairies, they'd had no idea what had awaited them when they got close to the pretty flower...trying not to think about how morbid it all was, he grabbed one of the flowers that didn't have a little fairy trapped inside and took the swab with the DNA on it. He started to rub it against the bottom of the flower and sure enough, after a few minutes, a gooey resin started to drip out into the jar that Caleb had stationed under the petals.

Yuck.

AJ couldn't help but to wonder if the oozing stuff had a funky smell. Deciding that it was most likely not a good idea to stick her nose that close to something that could ooze through normal gloves, she instead grabbed her swab stick.

She started rubbing the swab against the flower's column and slowly but surely the junk started to ooze out. Quickly she placed the jar underneath it so she could collect everything. It was starting to look pretty solid to her so that meant she was right on track.

Trying to write with gloves on wasn't the easiest of tasks, but she managed it, making a step-by-step of what Professor Bentley was doing. Beverly didn't much like asking for help, so this would come in handy.

Picking up the swab she eyed it critically. It had to be clean. Spotless. No need to contaminate the plant. She had a feeling Professor Bentley wouldn't be too happy about that. As it was, the swab was clear of any smudges or any visible defects.

Cautiously, she reached over and softly rubbed the swab against the column of the flower. If she didn't trust no wizard, she wasn't going to trust a plant clever enough to pick it's food. No matter what their diet was. Call her paranoid or whatever, it was her Slytherin kicking in.

Without much movement, she reached for the jar and held it beneath the orchid as instructed. Come one, ooze already! She was desperate to see IT. Not because she wanted to get it done and over with, but because she was doing Herbology stuff all on her own and no one breathing down her neck to be careful or anything like that. It was actually...fun.

Rubbing some more, she felt as if she was coaxing the resin to discharge. Beverly almost chanted; Come on, little fairy, come on. Then she remembered she was surrounded by students, sat next to a younger one, and didn't want to lose her cool-status. 'Cause she had one.

Oh! There it was!

The plant was OOZING. YES. There it goes! Why was she so excited? She didn't know and she didn't question it. IT WAS OOZING LILAC. Her favorite color. Transfixed, Beverly watched eagerly as resin trickled into the jar. She was careful to keep the jar from moving, which was challenging when all she wanted to do was fist bump the air 'cause...it was OOZING. SUCCESS.

Ohh, a little bit messy of an activity? COOL. Sophie could handle that. That meant it'd be all the more interesting. Sophie glanced down at her gloves and determined that she did indeed have a proper pair, so she skipped on borrowing a pair.

Fairy DNA? Okay, yeah. The professor had Sophie's undivided attention.

Sophie looked down at the swab in front of her then gently picked it up. She began to gently rub it against the orchid flower's column. She watched carefully, and when he lilac-colored resin began to discharge, she reached for her jar. She placed the jar under the resin and let it collect in the jar. The surface soon solidified, and she carefully removed the jar.
