So it was time for practicals and practice time. Cris got up off the mat and on his feet, waving his hands to warm himself up. They were going to learn the Knockback Jinx? No wait, they weren't. They were going to learn the Impediment Jinx and reserve the other one for homework. Homework!! Cris wished that for once, all the Professors would forget that word.

But for now it was practice...practice...practice.

Cris took note of how Professor Romanos pronounced the word Inpedimenta stressing the a in di instead of the way it would phonetically have sounded. So it's Imped-a-menta. And the wand movement? A flick of the wand horizontally. Not up and down but sideways horizontally.

Cris first decided to practice saying the incantation without using his wand. "[B]Imped-a-menta....Imped-a-menta...Imped-a-menta...Imped-a-menta[/B" Cris said the words over and over again. Enunciating each syllable clearly until he was certain that he was saying it the correct way.

Was he? He paused for a second to listen to how the other students were saying it. "Imped--a-menta...Imped-a-menta," Cris chimed along with the others. Except for the difference in accents, he sounded the same that they did.

Alright. Now it was his turn to practice his wand movements.

Call her a pessimist, but Layla wasn't so confident that the Skygge wouldn't show up here. So, yeah, she was making sure to pay very close attention to this activity.

And first step was to stand up. Which Layla did reluctantly, because her warming was working wonders. Sigh. Step two, make sure wand was handy. Check. She already knew this spell pretty well, but a little warm up before sending all wands a blazing couldn't hurt, right?

"Imped-a-menta." Horizontal wand flick, horizontal wand flick. "Imped-a-menta."

What would happen if one pronounced it 'mento' instead of 'menta'?

Going back to the few times she’d listened to Brooklyn rambling about White Walkers back at home, along with trying to stay as huddled up as possible against the cold, Lily had stayed quiet during most of the lecture portion of the lesson. Of course they’d gone back to discussing the Cold Ones, and now their little minions the Skygge. It had just seemed a bit more far away when they weren’t slowly freezing into magical popsicles. Even trying to remember how brutally warm it had been in Peru over the summer wasn’t helping anymore. It just made her feel worse, and Sophie’s question about if the Skygge could show up here at Hogwarts certainly hadn’t helped any. Zombies over the summer, and the possibility of a completely different form of them now. At least she knew she was adept at the Blasting curse, after the joint Charms and Care of Magical Creatures lesson. It might come in even more useful than the hot air charm if the confidence Professor Romanos had, or at least seemed to be pretending to have, was proven false.

They weren’t practicing the Blasting curse though. She would have been surprised if they had been, only because she didn’t think the professor wanted to have to rebuild the arena after that lesson. She’d rather not worry about holes being blasted in the wall of the castle, too. The Impediment Jinx was simpler. Safer, too, since the odds of anyone letting in even more frigid air was slim. She’d stood up easier than expected, from the ball she’d been curled into on her yoga mat, and flicked her wand out of its holster so it was at the ready. No actual casting yet, but she was ready. Practice first, and she’d tilted her head slightly at how specific the pronunciation was. She’d never had any problems with how she’d pronounced it before. “Imped-a-menta,” she murmured, testing it out. The spell didn’t sound any different to her, but maybe she was wrong. She’d flicked her wrist a few times to practice the wand movement , the tip of her wand moving horizontally in short bursts with the flicks, trying not to think of the jinx incase she accidentally started casting nonverbally. Dropping her hand to her side again, she went back to the incantation. “Imped-a-menta, Impedimenta, Impedimenta…”

Okay, it was time to practice. Stopping her stretching, Jasmine stood up and tried to put her game face on. She took a moment to try to clear her mind and focus on what she would be doing. First, she would practice he incantation. "Im-ped-a-men-ta", she said slowly taking care to pronounce each syllable. Once she got the feel of the word, she practiced again a little faster. "Impedimenta, Impedimenta, Impedimenta."

Now it was time to practice the wand movement. Jasmine took out her wand and gave it a horizontal flick. Over and over, she practiced flicking her wand to the side until she felt comfortable with the movement. Feeling confident that she had done the separate parts correctly, Jasmine waited for the OK to put everything together and actually practice the spell.

Lucy had no other questions ..
So she listened to the instructions of the Professor and she started to practice the pronunciation of the spell:" IM-PE-DI-MEN-TA!"

Awesome! Activity time! Well, almost activity time but first came practice. Adi jumped up, eager to do something that would distract him from the bitter cold. "Impedimenta...Impedimenta...Impedimenta...Impedim enta...'' he practiced, making sure to say the "a'' sound. ''Imped-a-menta...Imped-a-menta...Imped-a-menta...''

And now for the wand movement. A flick horizontally. Adi did this a couple of times. Now he was ready for the activity!

Ian wandered over to his friend Adi and thought he'd find a partner to impede. He wavedto his buddy and smiled. It's a bit chilly, dontcha think? He blew into his hands before removing his wand from his robe.

He began to speak the words Imp...he got stuck on the word imp and began thinking of little people and started to chuckle a little. His mum used to call him an imp as he'd get into her things and scatter them all about and soon he was lost in thought about home. This frozen arena made him a little homesick.

Angel looked at the Professor and then smiled, oh it wasn't the end of the lesson but it was time to practice and Angel loved practicing the spells. " imped... imenta." Angel was sure she had the sound right now all she had to do was put it together. " impedimenta!" Angel loved practicing spells and she was glad she was getting good at them, but she wanted to make sure she was saying it right, so she said it again. " impedimenta!" Right incantation was correct, now she just had to wait.

Heeeeey, guess what? MADDIE was the one who had suggested THIS spell and she felt SUPER proud that she'd made a good suggestion. The small brunette bounced the tiniest bit on the balls of her feet because bouncing wasn't something she did often and her eyes were glued to Professor Romanos, wanting to get this spell down EXACTLY in case she'd ever have to use it. UH-HUH.

First up, the incantation! AHEM. "Im-ped-a-men-ta. Imped-a-menta. Imped-a-menta." Stressing the a sound, yeah? The first year paused to listen to the classmates closest to her say it a few times and then nodded to herself. Yeah, she seemed to be saying it correctly. "Imped-a-menta. Impedimenta. Impedimenta." Oh yeah, she HAD it.

Having more or less mastered saying the incantation to the Impediment Jinx, it was now time for him to practice the wand movements. Professor Romanos had demonstrated a sideways flick movement with her wrist, so that's what Cris practiced doing.

Without using his wand, he pretended that he was holding one and keeping his wrist tight, he flicked his wrist horizontally sideways. Horizontal flick....flick wrist sideways...horizontal flick...keep wrist tight and not loose...flick...flick...flick...

Now he could practice doing both sans wand. Even though, he was already familiar casting that specific spell, Cris always believed in practicing...and that's what he did.

Flicking his make believe wand sideways, Cris said the incantation to the spell,"Impedimenta," pronouncing the middle letter I as ah...instead if ee.

...and then again..."Imped-a-menta" and a flick of the wrist horizontally sideways.

Awesome. They were moving on to the practical portion.

The stretching had helped to wake Lux up a little, so she had no difficulty getting back to her feet again. In fact, she was rather eager. Figuring that it might be nice to do some more exercises, she continued to loosen her arms and legs while listening to Professor Romanos.

Impedimenta? She had head of the Impediment jinx before. As far as she remembered, it worked to slow the target down. There was definitely some usefulness to this spell when dealing with these creepy zombie minion things. Hopefully that wouldn't happen because Antarctica wasn't on her list of holiday destinations.

Grabbing her wand, she held it at her side for when she was ready to use it and started practicing the incantation. "Impedimenta... Impedimenta..." Gah, was that right? Or was she not stressing the 'a' sound correctly? "Imped-a-menta... Imped-a-menta... Imped-a-menta... Impedimenta." There, much better!

Pleased with herself, Lux began flicking her wand back and forth in a horizontal line. Easy peasy.

They would have done the Knockback Jinx? Man. Oh MAN. Was he going to miss the opportunity to knock someone over? Jeez. This was sad. Though, for the homework, he DID hope that he WOULD get the chance to knock someone over. Someone he probably didn't like, which left quite a lot of choices open.

This needed to be thought about in detail. Yeah.

The Impediment Jinx wasn't a bad one so, after standing up and stretching out, Grayson set about to practice that one. First came the speech, of course. "Impedimenta! Imped-a-menta! Imped-a-mentaaaaaaa........... impred-a-mentaaaaaa........... imped-a-mentaaaaaaaaaa!" Was that good enough? "Imped-a-mentaaaaaa........... imped-a-menta........ impedamenta!" Better? Better.

Then came the wand movement which, luckily, was quite a simple one. A horizontal flick. A small flick to the side. That was all. Grayson flicked his wand to the side. Flick flick flick! There. Done. Easy as pie, that was.

Moving around to the side of the stands, she revealed a disillusioned medium sized and rather plain metal container. Levitating it towards the front of the class, not that it was heavy or anything but, it wiggled and shook and sounds of things rapidly hitting the inside were more than likely noticeable.

Wiggle wiggle shake shake BAM!

Ahem. "Listen up! Your task is to immobilize votever comes out of this box. I vill be adding a couple additions to your targets that vill be vorth points, so keep an eye open for them." Simple enough, right? Waiting a couple beats of a moment, she flicked her wand and the lid popped right off. ZOOOM! A handful of cornish pixies flew straight in the air, followed by more than three dozen butterflies and...oh yes, unusually quick chocolate frogs in great numbers. Was there also a metal bird running free upon the ground?

Good Merlin, how did Sonya get in there?

OOC: Basically, you're using impedimenta to immobilize the pixies, butterflies, chocolate frogs, and anything else that Professor Romanos may toss into play. First one to immobilize the item worth points will win the points for their house. Please do not RP the results of your characters cast against the item worth points; only RP the casting of the spell. The results will be determined OOC.

Feel free to have the pixies but your characters! We'd prefer to keep the injuries on a down-low, especially since this isn't a dangerous spell. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Ian listened to the professor and then watched as the metal box that was shaking and making noise enter the arena area. He sighed. He wasn't terribly accurate with shooting spells at things, but he'd give it a try.

When the container was opened, he watched the pixies fly off and butterflies come out as well as an abundance of chocolate frogs. He was most interested though in the metal bird that came out. It was running around on the ground and it just made him giggle. He took his wand, pointed it in the general direction of the bird and said the incantation as best he could im-ped-A-ment-a as he swished his wand in a line from his left to right.

“Imped-a-menta…imped-a-menta.” Flick, flick flick. Ethan continued to murmur the spell under his breath as he started to walk around to keep his blood circulating. The classroom’s just too cold now for him. Hopefully, the activity will require them to…

Holy Fawkes, what in the name of Merlin?! Evil Cornish pixies were released, plus…why are there butterflies?...and chocolate frogs? Why is Professor Romanos wasting FOOD?! No no no…and…what chicken is that?? The third year eyed the metal chicken first before realizing that he was being attacked by…stuff.

He looked up just in time to see a lone Cornish Pixie dart forward towards his face. His first instinct was not to use his wand. Instead.

BAM!

Cornish Pixie met Ethan Mordaunt’s might fist. There, immobilized flying creature. Thank you very much.

Now what?

…

RUN! Ahem.

Curiously, Lux watched Professor Romanos levitate a metal container towards the front of the class. Why was it shaking? O_O Keeping her eyes on the box, she wondered what was inside. Seemed like an easy enough task as long as the moving objects weren't too quick for her.

Wand at the ready, she saw as the lid was removed and cornish pixies, butterflies, a metal bird, and CHOCOLATE FROGS all flew out. Okay, it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out which objects she would try to slow down. Aiming for one of the chocolates, Lux made a horizontal line through the air while calling out, "Impedimenta!" Would she hit something? Preferably the Chocolate Frog, but you know beggers can't be choosers.

Now WHAT was the wand movement again? A flick of the wand, yeah? Okay. Maddie did this a few times, careful not to let her wand go flying as she did. Not a hard movement to master, if you asked her. The question WAS, could she put the movement and incantation together to successfully cast the spell. She was ITCHING to try.

Lucking for Maddison, Romanos was ready to let them give it a go. The small brunette eyed the container curiously, her ears picking up on the clang-clanging of things moving inside. WHAT was THAT all about? ...Oh. OH. Incoming, then? Should she be scared or? The twelve year old braced herself, wand held firmly as she narrowed her eyes. She didn't know WHAT to expect but she was excited.

Merlin's Beard!

Suddenly there was a lot of things flying through the air and the first year's brown eyes widened as she ducked under a particularly mischievous looking pixie that had been flying right at her head. "Oi." Watch it, pixie! Hadn't had time to react to THAT one.

But the butterflies! Maddie saw a rather colorful one not too far away and as she tried to focus on that one, she had to shake another pixie off the sleeve of her robes. Could they NOT?

"Imedimenta!" Maddie's eyes were narrowed in concentration despite the chaos and she flicked her wand horizontally as she watched the butterfly with bated breath. HAD SHE DONE IT?

They were going to be immobilising PIXIES.

And butterflies and chocolate frogs too but that didn't matter. PIXIES. Those creatures were going to cause HAVOC, he just knew it. This was probably the only reason that Grayson was grinning as widely as he was. YES. He didn't care about the butterflies or the chocolate frogs but he DID want to immobilise the pixies. Uh huh. BUT. If they DID immobilise a chocolate frog, did they have the chance to eat it as well? Free food, you know. He didn't want to pass up that opportunity. And if they could have some, he was all up for focusing on immobilising the chocolate frogs instead. Just saying.

Rolling up his sleeves, a determined look crossed his face as--

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL.

OH MAN OH MAN. Did Ethan just punch the creature? SNORT. Merlin, that was one way to immobilise the creatures, alright.

Fine. He was meant to be concentrating on immobilising these creatures and chocolatey goodness instead of laughing otherwise one could end up taking him away. What? It was a possibility. And if they didn't, he was sure that they'd pull on his hair and clothes and cause a ton of mischief. Not that he'd mind, as long as it wasn't to him.

Hearing a cackle somewhere near his ears, Grayson took a deep breath and turned around as quick as a snap. "Impedimenta!" IMMOBILISE YOURSELF, OVERLY SMUG CREATURE.

Sweet they were getting onto the practical portion of the lesson! He was excited for this. He heard the spell they were gonna use. It was called impedimenta. He wrote it down and also the wand movement and began to practice saying it first. He cleared his throat and said, "Impedimenta.... impedimenta... impedimenta.... impedimenta..... impedimenta...... impedimenta." There that seemed easy enough. He practiced the wand movement now and he began flicking his wand back and forth in a horizontal line. Now it was all set.

Woaahh onto the activity! So now they had to put their spells to the test! Alright he could do this. All they had to do was immobilize the creatures. He got his target on the little pixie coming his wand. He pointed his wand and said, "Impedimenta!" with the flicking of the wand back and forth in a horizontal line. He wondered if his spell worked.

Okay this sounded like fun, watching the rest of the class start to follow the things that were let out of the box.. thinking of the first thing he saw he started to look at the Pixies.. man they were fast. swooping around the room.

Taking out his wand he followed one.. just one for a few minutes as he tried to predict the movement of the little creature.. better give it a try right.

Doing the proper wand movement Bay said "Impedimenta!" as he hoped that it would hit his target.

Kinda an explosive start wasn't it? They were going after the pixies first thing too! Which was smart, in her opinion.

Oh my, 'course Sonya was a target too. Poor frozen bird.

Watching the students for a few seconds, she absentmindedly reached into the metal container, grasping something. Was there an undetectable extension charm on that container? Maybe. Maybe not. Could've been anything. After a couple moments, she pulled out a tennis ball and tossed it into the air.

"TWO POINTS!"

OOC: Haai everyone. To clear up any confusion, you may RP the results of any other object other than the object worth points. For example, you may RP the results for chocolate frogs, butterflies, and pixies, but not for the tennis ball Professor Romanos just tossed into the air.

Oh, so stretching did warm you up a bit. After stretching some more, the first year was aware that everyone was practicing the incantation. And Yeah yeah he would in a bit first he had to warm up- was it time to go already!?!

Kyroh clumsily drew his wand and practiced the wand movement quickly. But he couldn't get a word out before- WOOSH - Romanos released a whole bunch of moving jumping, possibly biting and poking creatures! Sure the butterflies seemed okay, but look at those pixies! And the chocolate frogs! What if the chocolate frogs wanted to bite back!?

It was alright. He'd be fine as long as none of them flew right toward- Kyroh ducked as three butterflies flew over his head and a chocolate frog jumped away following them.

...He wasn't going to be alright.

"Impedimenta"The first year declared aiming his wand at another butterfly heading his way. Nothing happened though except for the butterfly landing on his shoulder. "Er.....hi. This spell was suppose to work on you." Did the butterfly not know that? Or had he done something wrong? "But that's okay you can stay here if you want."

Looking around the classroom the first year focused on Grayson and found HIS voice in the crowd of people.

SOOO he was saying it wrong! He knew he had heard something about an A sound while stretching. "Imped-a-menta" He mumbled. "Imped-a-menta." THERE he was ready! He wasn't about to attack his butterfly friend though. There were mates now! He'd even give him a name.

Steve.

Sup Steve.

Two chocolate frogs came bounding out of nowhere and Kyroh raised his wand again at the one in front. They were coming fast, as if ready to attack. Did chocolate even attack? IT DIDN'T MATTER HE WAS READY THIS TIME! Ready with Steve and everything! "Impedimenta!" He declared, flicking his wand horizontally at the chocolate frog in front that had gotten so close he could touch it- AH.

Oh boo! She missed the Chocolate Frog. Oh well. It was okay, because she could always try to hit another one or maybe one of the butterflies. Lux wasn't as sure about the pixies, because what if she made one mad?

Ooh, tennis ball!

Eagerly, she slashed her wand horizontally in its direction while calling out, "Impedimenta!"

A butterfly had passed in front of the tennis ball at the last second, but was it enough to detour the spell performed by Lux from hitting it's intended target? As the tennis ball was on the verge of it's descent... it came to a slow yet successful stop in mid-air.

"Vell done. Two points to Hufflepuff! Continue on." she called out, grasping the metal container and starting to move around the class. Easier to spot and hear the little things y'know? Like that butterfly upon Kyroh's shoulder. Did he know it was there?

And did anyone see the pixie that landed upon the frozen tennis ball blowing raspberries at the students?

Pixies, butterflies, and chocolate frogs? Interesting choices. And Penelope couldn't help but wonder how Kurumi and Selina would react if they were here. 'Cause they were afraid of chocolate frogs or something weren't they? Or was that someone else? The Gryffindor didn't remember why either though. But it was a funny interesting thought.

No time to think about that now though.

Ducking as a couple pixies zoomed overhead, she caught sight of a nearby chocolate frog hopping by. She flicked her wand to the side. "Impedimenta!" And...it was frozen! Awesome!

Tennis ball? Points?

Glancing in that direction, she flicked her wand quickly again and cast, "Impedimenta!" Would it hit the tennis ball or something else? Or had someone else already gotten it? Penelope wasn't really paying attention, trying to keep her focus on the other stuff so no pixies or frogs attacked her.
