Besides one of the arena doors being open for easy access, the arena was locked up tight to keep the winter chill out. That didn't stop the window panels from looking icy however. Lit iron braziers were suspended in midair in each corner of the room to warm it up, but an extra cloak or two couldn't hurt either. Purple mats and the small desks that could pass off as stools were laid evenly in three rows in the middle of the arena. Professor Romanos was currently absent from the room yet her own burgundy mat sat at the front of the class. Please, come in! Take a seat. Try to keep warm.

This whole conversation was fascinating.....creepy and scary, but fascinating. Her classmates had some good questions and Jasmine waited with quill in hand to hear the answers. She, however, did not have any questions. At least she didn't have any questions at this moment.

Chuckling softly, Medea shook her head a little with a sincere smile. "Not quite. The most ventus vill do is melt the ice and snow off their bodies, but good guess, Miss Valentine. I do enjoy vhere your mind takes you." In other words, keep thinking outside the box!
....
"Actually, Miss Royal..." she took a short breath, but spoke in the same soft and warm voice as she did with everyone else. "I von't disclose vhether or not that spell vill vork upon a Skygge. It is in my opinion that there is no circumstance vhere it is necessary to use the killing curse ven there are other vays to manage a situation. However...you may feel free to search for the answer during your own time if you really must know."
No killing curses. Nope.
Oh my. How completely adorable an answer was that??
"If only, Mister Scabior. If only."
SPOILER!!: Fire peeps
With the good handful of students answering with fire spells, Medea switched her stretching to focus on her arms. "Skygge, Mister Lecium. Ve are discussing the Skygge, not the Cold Ones. Although, fire spells do vork, though not in the vay you all are thinking. Remember this, a Skygge does not feel pain. Vhile burnt flesh vill stop many other creatures in the vorld, it vill not stop a Skygge. They vill continue to come after you, even if setting them completely on fire."
Shaking out her arms, she moved to glance to her watch but...no watch. Eh.
"On the other hand, fire is one of two vays to make sure that, once defeated, they cannot come back as a Skygge again. For one, a burnt heart vill defeat them entirely. Two, a Cold One vill not vont to bring back a body vhich has been damaged to such a great extent. The more able-bodied the human, the more likely the Cold One vill go after them."
SPOILER!!: Stunning peeps ;) plus Freezing peeps
"As long as you are only trying to stop the Skygge in their tracks, vould i recommend the stunning spell. Othervise, I'd suggest using the impediment jinx. Or, the freezing charm as Miss Bayless suggested, and the trip jinx as Miss Guidry suggested. Naturally, a trip jinx von't stop them, but it could buy you a few seconds." Nodding to the sixth year, she continued on.
"The reason vhy i'd recommend the impediment jinx over the stunning charm is due to the fact that spells that affect the Skygge's brain vill not vork; the confunduns charm in included. Vhy that is true, there has only been theories. One of vhich is that the brain is completely idle, or...shut off in other vords, and their only charge for being mobile and avake lies vithin their heart due to the Cold One's magic."
Though no yet confirmation.
SPOILER!!: Blasting and Combination peeps
"Going off from our fire discussion, I vould suggest any type of blasting spell beforehand. Vhile a burnt heart has been their downfall, haffing no heart at all from a blasting spell is just as...effective." She paused, glancing to each student. None of them looked green or pale white, did they? "Despite the after effects of a blasting spell being rather...scattered, they are fairly easy to cast and therefore, the desired spell to use. Although, the few of you who mentioned a combination of spells are more than correct as vell. The only process that has proven to truly defeat a Skygge is the burning of their heart if a blasting spell doesn't reach it beforehand. Othervise, there are a variety of vays to slow them down."
Rolling her ankles, she continued. "On the other hand...if the severing charm is more your style, keep in mind...the loss of their limb, or head, vill not stop them. In fact, that limb may continue to try and come after you as vell. Vhile it is truly very effective to escape a Skygge whom has no legs, just remember that they are still, in fact, alive and can direct their other members tovards you."
Happy thoughts y'all. "As a recap, aim for their hearts, and stay avay from spells that effect their minds since they vill not vork. The impediment jinx is rather effective as is the trip jinx, though also the body bind curse, leg locker curse, jelly legs jinx, incarcerous, and severing charms haff been used in the past with satisfactory results. Your goal is to stop them from moving if you cannot finish them off."
"Ve'll get to any questions you all may haff in just a moment, but, I do believe Miss Wayne had a very good question first." Oh yes, she had not forgotten. "Can anyone take a try at an answer? Vot happens to the Skygge ven the Cold Ones are defeated?"
So a combination of spells worked just as good. While she stretched some more, Beverly allowed herself a brief moment to picture herself throwing a great combo of spells and defeating a herd of Skygge. Bam! Bam! BAM!
Sniff. Yeah. She'd totally kick frozen bums.
Coming back to reality when her name was mentioned she almost defended out loud: I didn't do it! But...it was simply Professor Romanos returning her question to the class -- she suddenly straightened her back, chin raised. Right. She was innocent of all things. LOOK at her eyes, stunningly innocent.
She didn't, though, raise her hand to answer. It would be ridiculous. She asked the question, so why give it a go? Beverly wanted answers, so she jotted down notes and possible things that made sense. Mostly from that one smart Puffer dude.

Unfortunately, they...do not revert back to their normal selves. The Skygge too vill decease immediately after their maker's demise. Mister Strand had put it quite vell. Since the Cold One's magic no longer reigns over their frozen hearts, there is nothing to keep it avake or their bodies mobile."
Ooh? "Not necessarily, Miss Duchannes. I do not mean try and lower their body temperature ven I say freezing charm. Since their body temperature is already so low as you mentioned, ice can build up upon their bodies. Enough of it may halter their leg movement or arm movement vherever you are aiming. Freeze their feet to the ground if you can. They may be a strong species, though it takes quite a lot to break ice."
A moment was taken to lay her mat upon the stands and let the information sink into the student's minds before asking, "Are there any more questions?"
YES!
One of her theories was correct. Giving herself a mental pat on the back, she wrote it quickly down, underlining it just because she had been correct. As for questions, she didn't have any at the moment. Hers had already been answered.

She won't disclose! It would totally work!! Hahahahahahah! She had technically gotten in right then, right?. Arista gave the Professor a smile letting her know that she had gotten what she had said.
Her hand went up again after stretching them while the Professor was answering everybody else. Before lowering it quick, nope she wasn't going to try. She had no clue on what happened to them unless they turned into a puddle but after the whole Killing Cure incident she was keeping her mouth closed.
Arista raised her hand when the Professor asked for questions, "Are there any way for the Cold Ones to come back to life after being killed? Like if they were on the infected land?"

All these facts were making the Gryffindor feel reaaaal dizzy. This was getting really complicated real fast. Couldn't they just make pizzas or something, like in muggle studies? Why does Defense Against the Dark Arts have to be so confusing!? The Gryffindor could hardly keep up with any of this. Jeez.
Oh merlin. More questions?
See, when Romanos asked if there were any more questions, Zander had way more than just a few. Basically this whole lesson was just one big question. Except, he'd the the courtesy of not asking any. Because really that's how you show respect to everyone else. It's not like anyone wanted to actually know this stuff... Did they?
AND YET EVERYONE ASKS QUESTIONS. Cool. Ugh. Zander continued scribbling everything down, rather ferociously actually. He was trying to focus on the writing. Maybe that'd help dim down the headache????

There was the question of the century. What did happen to the little buggers after you took up their essential nervous system, the thing that re-animated them and froze their hearts in the first place. Definitely thinking they'd die as well. It was the only option unless they continued on but with no control?
Well the Professor went and confirmed it. So really, if a battle ever happened, aim for the Cold Ones and the Skygges would follow. Seemed simple enough.
Oh! Oh! Oh! Was it question time already?
Lex's hand shot up. "What are the odds we'll ever have a Cold One invasion on the school grounds? I mean, we've had dementors...and man eating plants and spirits controlling said plants......just curious."
JUST curious...and anxious and possibly essited.

There was a lot of information being shared now, and Lux was not totally sure that she grasped everything. Most of it made sense though, which was a good thing. Hopefully she would never run into any of these creatures, and she made a note to never head towards Antarctica. The place was way too cold for her anyway.
Did she have any questions? Nope. It seemed that everyone else was doing that for her, so it was best to wait quietly and see what the Professor had to say.

Leah had no real questions related to the topic. She wanted to ask why the weather was so cold, but nope, it was quite random, wasn't it? She heard some great questions shooting out from her classmates, and she pondered the answers to those in her mind. She looked around at the people asking questions, waiting for the professor to answer them.
Rubbing her arms to get warmer, the Hufflepuff shivered slightly. Brr.

Nobody could tell she was scared, could they? Because, Sophie could see these things easily becoming her Boggart.

Just...this friend thing was new to her, okay? She was TRYING to do a good job, though. Was it working?
Oh and P.S., she had no more questions.
She was just going to continue stretching and try not to think about her classmates hinting that the Cold Ones might be lured to Hogwarts cause of the extreme cold. ..Yeah.

Ian rubbed his shoulders and arms and stamped his feet a little to try and stay somewhat warm. He'd worn his knotted sweater from home, but he'd failed to wear the boots he normally wore when he was out in the cold at home. He tried to listen to the professor and students as the spoke about how to handle the Skygge and Cold Ones. It certainly was an interesting topic that they were discussing.
As he was about to ask a question concerning what steps one could take to protect oneself from these creatures, the professor moved her mat to the stands and laid it out. He figured his question could wait a bit more as he placed his hands under his arms to get a little more warmth into them.

FASCINATING.
No really, it was. Could she see how hastily he was noting things down? Because he was. The boy who usually hated taking notes and refused to do it on most occasions was filling up his journal with as much information on the Cold Ones and the Skygge as possible. It was probably messy but he didn't care. Nope. There was even a small drawing up in the corner of the two creatures. Just because.
Wasn't it funny that the idea of ice could help stall a creature that was frozen at the heart? Huh. Funny. He made a small note of that somewhere, too. Probably scrunched up in tiny writing along the margin because he didn't want to use another page for that.
As for any questions, something the Professor said about the Cold One's magic reigning over the Skygge's frozen heart made Grayson think and, eventually, raise his hand in the air. "Professor? Does that mean that the Skygge are only there to do the Cold One's bidding? Are they like the Cold One's Inferi?"

His attention went from several students down to one. And that is Cris. Hi Cris! His question made his brain analyze the problem further. Based on their discussions, the Cold Ones can only be defeated by flaming arrows that are aimed at their hearts. This means that...they will get burned, right? And seeing that the Skygge can be defeated by a Blasting Curse which also meant destruction by fire, there is no way that these creatures will be buried without being toasted at least.
Hand up.
"I don't think a defeated Cold One or Skygge will infect the ground again once it is buried, because the fire that consumed them must have at least destroyed the infection as well." Orr...maybe not? Ethan scrunched up his nose and waited for Professor Romanos' opinion on this.
He did however did small stretching movements while still seated on his mat, and figured that they will be starting with the activity real soon.

While continuing to stretch, Cris listened attentively to his explanation about the fire burning any possible remaining traces of the magic that had created them in the first place. And it to be magic if they were still going on the assumption that it was a failed attempt at using the Rusurrection Stone that caused them to be infected in the first place.
Cris had to admit that Ethan had very good reasoning, but his answer got Cris to thinking on a different tangent.
Raising his hand, he asked,"Professor, can the magic from the Rurrection Stone be defeated by fire? I'm just running on the assumption that it was that magic that infected those buried in the ice and made them the Cold Ones," Cris paused to think further before continuing.
"Was it just its magic that created them or did it also empower them? Or did the Cold Ones have magic because they used to be wizards and witches and their magic has nothing to do with the Resurrection Stone at all?."
Oh my, plenty of questions! Though she didn't mind the help from Ethan with answering Cris' bountiful questions. "You are correct Mister Strand, as ve've gone over before in our previous lesson, it is partly due to the failed experiment during the creation of the resurrection stone leaking into the arctic ice that brought the vitches and vizards back to life. However, Mister Mordaunt is also correct in the assumption that fire will eliminate the failed elixir from their system. However..."
She paused in her stretching to continue. "If not burned by fire, or if the body is not delt vith properly after death, they can re-contaminate the artic, or any other place they haff fallen. Although, vhile this process is slow due to the arctic's hostile conditions for decomposing, bodies can be lost in most extreme conditions that the south has gone through." Crossing her arms to keep in the warmth she had, Medea glanced to the fires around the room. Not much help were they?
"Though it seems ve only haff theories to answer your final question Mister Strand. Vot ve do know, is that the failed elixir needs the magic in our blood to reanimate the body, vhich is vhy only vitches and vizards haff been victims. Vhether their magic comes from themselves or from the elixir is...currently unknown."

Shut up people so they could move on to cool things. AJ still hoped that the practical portion had something to do with blowing things up. Of course she would be cool with learning a cool new jinx or something too.
The first year shook her head no as she continued on with her jumping jacks. You would think she would have been tired by now, but she was fully loaded on chocolate frogs and could keep going all lesson.

So for the second time in a row, Adi shook his head. Nope, no questions here.

Cris listened attentively and began taking down notes even as he nodded in understanding as Professor Romanos replied to his answers. Okay...well hopefully they Do make sure to dispose the bodies of the Cold Ones in the proper fashion.
Anymore questions? Cris looked around before shaking his head. No....none...for now.

Lex wouldn't have had any problem accepting what the Professor said but see....Kinsley Shacklebolt outlawed Dementors and no one had seen them for ages then suddenlty they come knocking at the doors of the castle--barging in actually. She couldn't remember them knocking at any point. And in all fairness that Isfret guy was stuck all the way in Egypt or something until the Headmistress happened.
So yeah....answer not accepted, the Gryffindor would remain hopeful on the case. At the moment she wasn't sure which she'd have liked to see more but she was thinking that for a start maybe it wouldn't be a good idea to have them both in the same invasion. Save that for the more seasoned years.
As for the questions. Lex had no more of those, she was ready to get to a bit more blasting if that's what they were doing.

Zander tried to take notes on everything that was being said. But it was all just giving him an even BIGGER headache than before. There was just way too much going on. Not to mention the fact that everyone seemed to be really interested in all of this... Except for him. He really didn't have the slightest interest in all this DADA stuff.
Couldn't they just move on to the more... practical part of class? So nope. No more questions from this kid. Just a massive migraine.

Noooo more questions. Whether that was good or bad, who knows. They had just enough time for the activity however. Or so she thought. They did have enough time for the activity, right? "I know this is a lot to take in, especially in one sitting. So let's get up and moving."
"I did haff plans to start the knockback jinx in class and move onto the impediment jinx during your homevork..." Who was the one who brought up the impediment jinx again? "...however, due to the cold, ve'll save the knockback jinx for homevork and move around more vith the activity in class. So, first things first. Be up on your feet and haff your vand in hand. Quite difficult to perform a spell vithout it."
"For time restraints, I'll continue on. Secondly, the incantation for this spell is impedimenta. You'll vont to say this very clearly. Make sure to get the "a" in the sound, not "deh" or "di". Imped-a-menta. Thirdly, the vond movement is a simple flick of the vond horizontally. Like so." Taking out her wand, she demonstrated the wand movement. A simple short flick to the side. Nothing intricate.
"Go on a practice the incantation and vond movement separately for a few seconds vhile I set up the activity. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask."

Zander could feel himself starting to doze off. Maybe his headache was due to a lack of sleep? Eh. Who knows. Anyways. When he heard his Professor addressing the class again, he abruptly shot his head up into the air. Oh the practical part? Perfect! Wait. This was the part of the lesson where Zander would miserably fail and everyone would point and laugh. Actually they never pointed and laughed, but that always happened in his dreams. So it could be a possibility.
Anyways.
He rose to his feet, just as he was told. Wand at the ready. Ah, was this why they did the stretching? Because they had to stand up for this? Hm. Anyways. He listened carefully as Romanos explained the incantation "Im-ped-a-men-tah." That wasn't too bad. "Im-ped-a-men-tah.... imped-a-menta...... impedamenta...." Zander repeated the spell a couple of times until it rolled off his tongue naturally.
He had said it so many times at this point, that it didn't really sound like a spell at all. Just a jumble of sounds and letters. Hm. Weird. Horizontal flick? He could totally do that. Zander practiced flicking his wand from side to side. That wasn't bad at all. He decided to go back to practicing the incantation. Because if he was bound to screw up on anything, that would be it.

So somehow he was right. Fire to destroy their hearts is the answer to keep the Cold Ones and their minions; the Skygge to stay...dead. Grinning, Ethan got up and did a few more stretching. Stretching is good because it's making the warmth inside him to double. He did note however, that it became more chilly. How...is that even possible?
"Im-ped-A-men-ta." Who cares about the spelling now, yeah? As long as he's pronouncing it correctly, then he's good to go. "Im-ped-A-men-ta." Simultaneously, Ethan got his wand out from his sleeve and rolled his wand wrist to warm it up. After rolling, he did flick his wrist from left to right. Nobody wants to have a strained wrist after this, no?
Not when there is a high possibility that a Cold One and a Skygge's on their way to get them.

Finally activity time. And it wasn't for a very hard spell either. That was nice. Not that she had a problem with learning new ones - at least, not like she used to - Penelope definitely appreciated not adding yet another thing to study/learn/practice on her plate. She already had more than enough of that.
She hopped to her feet and pulled out her wand. "Impedimenta." Yup, she knew it. But she'd repeat it again anyway. "Impedimenta." Mhm. And a simple flick of the wand. Easy enough. She flicked it a couple times.
That seemed enough practice, yeah? Yeah.
