Defense Against the Dark Arts Three - Classroom 1C
Down at the opposite end of the first floor from the dueling arena lies Classroom 1C. Considerably smaller than the dueling arena, it looked like an ordinary classroom. Even felt a bit ordinary temperature wise, but a chill still hung in the air. However, the floor lay empty; no desks or chairs. In fact, there were no windows either, but there was an abundant amount of leaves on the floor for some reason. Can you spot the ones that would give that satisfying crunch when stepped on? Or will you be cautious and avoid stepping on them? It was defense against the dark arts after all. Professor Romanos stands towards the back of the classroom, waiting for the students to arrive.

SPOILER!!: Adi
Adi tried the spell a couple more times. At first he had gotten nothing but after about three tries, he managed to produce a purple rope thingy whiich vanished a second later. So much for mastering the spell.
Taking a moments break, Adi glanced around at his classmates. Some like him, were having trouble. AJ was included in this group. His memory traveled back to the first Transfiguartion lesson of the term when they had worked together, both encouraging the other and having a bit of competition to see who would make their cloud snow first.
Things had been awkward for a while but maybe that had changed? Shrugging, the Hufflepuff headed over to the Gryffindor. "Hey,'' he said. "Having trouble? I bet I could grab the dummy first.'' He grinned. Adi knew that was a great way to motivate AJ. See? No awkward. Anyway... "Carpe Retractum!" Adi did the wand movement. Another purple rope! It zoomed towards the targeted dummy. But much to the boy's disappointment, the rope decided to disappear. Ugh!
The lion was just about to jab her wand towards the dummy again when a voice that she would recognize anywhere approached her. "Hey." she greeted back to her... friend, yes friend, Adi. She was pretty sure that her having trouble was obvious, but she knew Adi was sweet, and wouldn't completely call her out on it. "It's the story of my life isn't it?" The jokes were coming back naturally. Maybe all of the weird vibes were over?
Say what? "Oh yeah? You're on Rehman!" The thought of their previous bet came to mind, and she quickly stored it away. She was not going down that road again, not when they were finally on speaking terms. She watched as Adi tried the spell. The rope appeared, she saw it. "Watch this." AJ was about to show him how it was done. Her competitive juices were flowing. "Carpe Retractum." Purple smoke, or light, she couldn't be sure appeared, but there was no rope. It wasn't over yet though, Adi had failed to get his spell perfect, in front of her anyways.

Forget about Adi worrying about the awkward stuff. As soon as AJ started speaking to him, it felt like they were back to those good old days when they spent much of their time joking with each other.
"I'm watching.'' Adi did just that, feeling all of the sudden more happy than usual. He had not realised how much he hated staying away from AJ. At least her attempt at the spell produced something. "Was that supposed to be a rope?'' Adi kidded as the smoke/light vanished. "Let me show you how it's done.''
"Carpe Retractum!" As he said this, the Hufflepuff moved his wand int he right movement. Instantly there was a purple rope flying towards the dummy. It was going to wrap itself around the dummy and he knew it but at the last moment he broke his concentration so that the rope fell away inches away from the target. Why? He wasn't sure...but he had an idea that it was because he knew AJ would be determined to beat him and that would make her get the hang of the spell faster. He liked when she succeeded at her spell work. Yep.

Hehe, this was fun.
Lux really enjoyed practicals and she really enjoyed distractions at the moment, so this was doubly awesome for her. After pulling the one dummy she decided to try with another one, so the girl walked over to the dummy at the opposite side from her first target because why not. Pointing her wand at the dummy, she used the whip-like movement that she was already familiar with. "Carpe Retractum!" The magical rope left her wand and wrapped around the dummy. Satisfied, she moved the object in towards her.
Was she ready to try non-verbally? Part of her wanted to.

They were back! AJ and Adi were officially back on good terms, and as soon as they started talking it was as if no time had been lost. It felt downright good. The lion should have stopped the silence sooner, but her stubbornness seemed to get into the way sometimes. "It was the right color at least." she laughed at herself because she knew it was a feeble attempt. Her grumpiness was fading away. She always thought that the cold was the onlt thing altering her mood. Could it be that the absence of Adi in her life was making her moody? If that were the case then she was glad that he was back. AJ sincerely missed her personal helper.
He was giving the spell a go again. She watched as the rope appeared. He was going to get it to work, but at the last second it stopped. "Rotten luck." It was her turn again. "This is how you wrap a rope around a dummy." Without waiting a second more she shouted, "Carpe Retractum!" and to her surprise the purple rope shot out and wrapped itself around the dummy. AJ grabbed Adi by the shoulder. "Did you see, did you see?" She was practically jumping up and down. It worked for her!

The pull charm, yup. She remembered that one very well. An interesting one to be honest. Handy, too. And very awesome to show off. Especially being of age while a sibling wasn't. Anyway, aside from those childish usages this one was a very helpful one.
So they needed to practice it, she could do that. Her wand was out and she stepped closer to a dummy crushing a dozen of leaves under her foot. Oops. Her bad. She totally forgot about those and the need to watch out for them. But it wasn't like they weren't that important, right? They were just dead leaves.
stomp, stomp, stomp.
Now back to the dummy. Before pointing her wand at it she started practicing the wand movement. whiiiip. This looked really cool. Well, it would look cooler when the spell worked on the dummy. Else it's slightly weird.
And before attempting to do it non-verbally she decided to do it the regular way. See if she still remembered how it was done and all. "Carpe Retractum," And a whip like motion followed. And voila! A purple rope appeared and wrapped around the dummy pulling it towards the snake. Awesome. Now to try it nonverbally perhaps.

WOOOOOOOT time to practice!
Grabbing his wand, Caleb hurried to one of the nearby dummies and prepared to practice. For some reason, he had a feeling that he was going to ROCK this spell. He could just tell. Clearing his throat, he gripped his wand and whipped it toward the dummy.
"Carpe Retractum!" he cried, waiting for the brilliant magic rope to fly out of his wand and wrap itself around the dummy.
But...nothing happened. He waited and still, nothing. But...but...he was sure he was going to do well with this spell!
UGH. Something was obviously wrong with this dummy.

He just smiled when AJ said 'rotten luck'. He didn't tell her that was intentional. He knew she wouldn't appreciate him doing that but he couldn't help it. You know what was AWESOME? Maddie was a PRO at the whole whipping motion used for this spell. She did it ALL the time to her brothers when they followed their dumb girlfriends along like lost puppy dogs. WHAAAA-PSHHHHH! Heh. BOYS.
The first year WAS a bit new to the incantation, though. Best to get THAT down as well before putting it all together and roping her some practice dummy.

Oh. So they were doing the Spiderman spell?
Kyroh was convinced because whips and WHOOSH and then back it came back and all. The first year stomped his feet into the ground and pushed off the wall with a hesitant look at the tall boy beside him. He wanted to be all cool and West like, but West didn't even notice him so....Kyroh figured that the older boy was being too cool to care. Which was kind of sad because they were friends and all right? That's what he had thought. But maybe thats just what happened when you were cool? Kyroh wasn't really sure.
He took a step away and drew his wand at the nearby practice dummy. "Carpe! Carpe Rettta-ta-tacutm!" No that didn't sound right. "Carpe Retra? Ret-ra-cu-tm. Carpe Retractum." He whipped his wand out, but nothing.

Pleased with her previous work Beverly decided she'd give non-verbal casting a shot. She's read plenty of books on it. From theories to tricks. All she needed was to execute it.
Concentration was needed.
Suddenly she thought about the vial of potion inside her trunk back in her dorm. Sparks of ideas lit in this Wayne's mind. A world of possibilities. Yes. She'd save that train of thought for later, even if she was already excited. For now she'd do her best to concentrate on her own. Blocking out the people around her and concentrating on what she wanted to see and make happen, Beverly did the whip-like motion with her wand.
Carpe Retractum.
Focus. Focus. Focus...
...Nothing.
Beverly could have sworn she saw a wisp of purple at the tip of her wand, and if it was, it didn't count as victory. No victory at all. More practice!

Penelope decided to start by practicing the incantation and the wand movement separately. Not only was she inexperienced with the spell, but she did not want to pull dummies toward her. She liked her personal space circle, and did not want to do anything that might involve something getting in her personal space circle.
Incantation first. "Carpe Retractum! Carpe Retractum! Carpe Retractum!" The first year repeated the incantation until she was sure that she had it right.
Now for the wand movement. She tried the wand movement a few times. Whip like movement. Penelope decided to practice it a few more times before trying it on a dummy.
Time to try the spell again! He was gonna pull this dummy closer to him. He got his wand at the ready. He had the incantation right last time. He just needed more confidence. He got the purple rope out of the wand but it disappeared. He was nervous before but now he knew he could do it. He cleared his throat and did the whip like motion and called out, "CARPE RETRACTUM!" then he saw a HUGE purple rope come out of his wand and it wrapped around the dummy and he got pulled towards it! SUCCESS! He did it! That wasn't too bad. Sometimes it is good to be more assertive and loud in your spells.

After her near death experience with the dummy Lex was ready to move on to the next one and to the non-verbal casting. There was always a bit of doubt when it came to that. Whether or not it would work--usually it didn't and she wasn't expecting this to be any different.
Okay.
Okaaaay.
Had to concentrate...focus on the movement of the rope...the intended spell--merlin this was so much easier with explosions. Was she the only one who noticed this? Things were a lot easier to visualize when they were hexes that you actively with everything in you wanted. This was just....cracking a rope. With a heavy sigh and a light shake of her head, she tried concerntrating again.
When she felt she was properly focused, Lex drew her wand back did that whip cracking motion as before.
There was a flutter of hope at the sight of purple line but it was a dull light at best that faded before it hit the dummy. Wow. Seriously? Might as well not have bothered glowing in the first place.

Alright, alright. If he was going to save the whole school he could totally do a simple spell. Heck, even some firsties were already getting the hang of it. Okay maybe he wasn't trying hard enough?
The Gryffindor took a few deep breaths and just squinted really hard. Because that's how you focus right? Okay, now the dummy. The dummy was going to be his imaginary Cold One and even though Romanos said the spell wouldn't work on them, he could use his imagination okaaaay? With a few more deep breathes, the boy whipped his wand in the air and "Carpe Retractum!!" Again. Nothing.
GAH. What does it take to become a spell master around here? Alright, alright. More practice? Practice made perfect right? Or at least that's what they said in all those movies and stuff. Okay. Another deep breath later and "Carpe Retractum! The Gryffindor watched as a purple rope like-- nah. What had happened!?! It looked like i was working and then poof. Nothing.

Marigold knew this spell. She was good at this spell. Like, better than accio. She had used this many times and could probably do it with her eyes closed.
"Carpe Retractum!" Whippy whippy! Mhm. Just as she expected, the dummy was pulled towards her by a purple rope. She was good at this spell! It was the only one she could actually do on her first try.
Waiiit a second. Did the professor say nonverbally? HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA. Nope. That wasn't happening at ALL HAHAHHA.
She just muttered it reeeeeeally quietly so no one could hear. "Carpe Retractum."

Sophie looked toward her wand with a frown, as if the whole purple rope fizzling episode had been all its fault. It was all her fault, though. Not a fault, really, but she just...well, didn't do the spell right. Had the dummy been her only hope against one of those creepy Skygge, Sophie would have been toast.
She sighed to herself and positioned herself in front of the dummy a second time. This time, she focused on that purple rope going even further, snagging the dummy, and roping it on in. She could do this! "Carpe Retractum!" she called out. She moved her wand in a tight, whiplike motion.
A second purple rope sprang to life and leaped from her wand. It was almost all the way to the dummy before it, too, fizzled out. Well, at least she'd had better results this time.
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
Evidently she was going to have to give it another go. After such a half fail she didn't think she'd be able to leave these dummies until she was silent casting this thing in her sleep. It was the drive, she had too much of it and it might very well have been a PROBLEM but there was no time to think about that. Had to get this right before they moved on, if not she'd feel like she needed to do it over and over until she DID get it. Time wasted that could have been spent on another curse. She wouldn't be having it.
Focus Lex.
It shouldn't be that complicated. The spell was simple enough, words couldn't make THAT much of a difference...except with her wand's apparent hearing. As a firstie she always thought her wand was stubborn and hard of hearing but now, now it was just being difficult. After all they'd been through, it should be a mind reader by now. Merlin.
Once again she got set to do the whipping motion, while trying her hardest to keep all thoughts solely on the incantation and what the spell was meant to do. She had to want it--granted she wanted it last time TOO but go figure the wand must not have been convinced.
Carpe Retractum
Cue whipping motion.....AND THE ROPE, THE ROPE WAS THERE!! It only gave a feeble tug in place of a proper pull but did you SEEEEEE the rope?? Did the Professor? THE ROPE!!

Okay. He could do this.
Simon focused this time. Shaking his hands out, he took a breath and readied himself. He was going to get the dummy with the spell and arrest it for being a Cold One in disguise. "Carpe Retractum! he cried as he did the whipping motion.
The purple rope sprung out of his wand and neatly wrapped itself around the dummy, then it moved towards him.
He had done it? ACTUALLY?
Simon blinked his blue eyes and an infectious smile spread across his lips like wildfire. AWESOME.
Leah stepped up a bit, getting closer to the dummy she was working on. She did not dare get too close, in case she became the victim of the whips. She pointed her wand at the dummy, concentrating. "Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retrace - no, Retractum. Carpe Retractum." she muttered under her breath a couple of times.
She flicked her wrist in a whip-like motion extra times too, but stopped because she probably looked like an idiot. "Carpe Retractum!" Leah said, repeating the wand movement. Nothing. "Carpe Retractum." she repeated, focusing on letting a rope come out of her wand. Out of anxiety, the second year called out the incantation over and over again. "Carpe Retractum. Carpe Retractum. Carpe Retractum!" Rope, pretty please? Yes! A purple rope shot out of her wand. Unluckily, it was waaaay too short. Too bad, Leah needed more concentration.

Maybe he should do it nonverbally. What could go wrong, yeah? Besides…it might be his lucky day!
Ethan positioned himself again and made sure that he could see the dummy clearly. Once that was established, he visualized what he wanted to happen, filled his chest with intent, and concentrated on the words ‘Carpe Retractum’. Merlin. He had to admit that it was hard to do all three things at the same time mentally. Although it was hard for the boy, he focused on the dummy and at the task at hand.
3…2…1.
“Carpe Retractum!” a whip like movement of the wand, and shouting the incantation clearly inside his head. A puff of purple smoke emanated from his wand, and about four inches of purple rope pathetically dangled from its tip. Ethan raised an eyebrow and flicked it, retracting the rope. At least he got something. Heh.

With another flick of her wand, the rope retracted back inside.
Leah hoped she could do it this time. She was so close to successing in her last attempt.
She took steady breaths and aimed her wand straight at the dummy. She had to use her IMAGINATION. Imagine that the dummy is.. a book she cannot reach. It is on top of a shelf, and she desperately needs it, because otherwise she would die. "Carpe Retractum!" Leah yelled, doing the whip-like wand movement.
A purple rope sprang out of her wand and reached the dummy. Before it could wrap itself around the dummy's chest, it fell to the ground at its feet. Yay, improvement!
Angel looked around the classroom and saw that most of the people had succeeded and it made her more determined she'd never failed yet and she wasn't going to let it beat her now.
"Carpe Retractum!" Angel practiced the wand first and then she decided to make sure she knew it was right. "Carpe Retractum!" Angel beamed that was great, she decided now to put the words with the wand movement.
"Carpe Retractum!" Angel did the wand movement and smiled as the spell worked, she was totally happy now, she knew that it had been the dummy that had caused the problem the first time.
Lucy decided to try again!
She loved practicing the new spells!
She tried to concentrate and she said:" Carpe Retractum!"
Finally a rope went out from the tip of her wand and wrapped around the dummy.
"Cool":she said!

Adi laughed, too. "Good point. And a light or whatever that was is better than nothing at all.'' That was Adi for you. Always looking to find the bright side of stuff.
He just smiled when AJ said 'rotten luck'. He didn't tell her that was intentional. He knew she wouldn't appreciate him doing that but he couldn't help it. "Let's see you give it your best shot then,'' the Hufflepuff encouraged. Best shot AJ gave it indeed. "I saw, I saw,'' he replied, grinning at her as she held onto his shoulder. "Well done.'' He patted her on her arm.
"My turn. Carpe Retractum!'' Purple rope shot towards the dummy. There ya go. He did it too.
"Oh yeah, especially when I usually get a big fat nothing." She would take any little bit of something over nothing any day.
She waited for his response at her awesome display of the spell. AJ was pleased to see that he seemed as excited about it as she did. He really was a good friend to her. It was dumb of them to let some silly words get in the way of their friendship. "Thanks."
"Lemme see you try now." AJ knew that Adi had it in him to perfect the spell. She smiled at him encouragingly. "Not going to let a girl beat you, are ya?" That would be how many times now? The lion was teasing with him of course. She knew that they both did their best work when they were competing. Then Adi did it without effort. "Look at you."
She wanted to give it another go. AJ had to be sure that it wasn't dumb luck or something. "Carpe Retractum!" The rope came out and wrapped itself around the dummy once more. "Piece of cake." Now that she had it down it was.
Cutty spotted the lone defense dummy. If he didnt' know better, he'd swear by the look on its face that it was the one and same that he and Alexa Cambridge had practiced on. The one that he'd sent hurtling through the roof of the defense space. That was a neat spell Alexa had taught him that day. He sort of wished they were covering something new, but no matter. He'd seen from example and knew from his own practice that he could and would have to take his defensive education into his own hands.
He split the sight of the dummy with an erectly held wand before whipping it and saying the incantation, "Carpe Retractum!" The goldish coloured light flew out from is wand tip toward the dummy and Cutty's lil butt went flying toward it as much as it came speeding toward him. "Finite!" He managed to get out before a total head on collision occurred.
