Despite the chilly Fall air, the arena windows were wide open, letting the morning sunlight pour into the room and light up the stone floors while the earthy aroma of the great outdoors twirled under noses. Flickers of dust particles floated through the shafts of light with a glow; enchanting almost. Purple mats and small desks that looked more like stools were laid evenly in three rows in the middle of the arena. Professor Romanos herself was sitting on her own mat at the front of the class, lotus style, giving each student a warm smile as they passed by.

Penelope probably could have thought of many interesting questions to expand her knowledge, but the Ravenclaw girl just wanted to think about anything but zombies right now. Feeling a little sick to her stomach, Penelope closed her eyes and tried to think of good things. Taking deep breaths and thinking about things that calmed her, like playing piano, Penelope directed her thoughts away from the zombie arm. Thinking about playing piano made her fingers and hands move as if she was playing piano. Penelope hoped that there would not be an activity involving real undead creatures. The astronomy activity in the bubble things had been bad enough for the claustrophobic first year. Nope, no questions about zombies or other undead creatures.
Angel sighed, okay so her answer had been wrong but she thought it could have happened, she could just imagine someone dying because they had a cold and coming back all cold like, she wonder if when a ghost died because it had the flu or something does that mean that they got the flu? Angel wasn't sure but she decided that when she could she would try and find a ghost to ask, Nearly Headless Nick seemed nice so she might ask him if she could ever find him, she had no idea where he hung out.
"No Professor I don't have any questions." Angel didn't want to ask the one she had because she was afraid she'd be ignored, she really wanted to know what this had to do with Defence Against the Dark Arts, she was sure zombies were magical or how come muggles could see them.

Didn't she always have questions? This time though she was ready to move on and get to playing with zombies so she decided to keep her mouth closed for once. "Nothing for me." Besides she could always bombard her in her office one day and ask tons of questions. Yup, that could happen.
Kace grinned sheepishly when the professor told them that was another topic. "Sorry Professor!" he called out to her. But then he heard about the cold ones and it made sense. He copied down the notes and tried to stay on track. Sometimes his mind wandered to other things he couldn't help it sometimes. He tried to keep up though! He heard the explanation and copied it down. He heard Marigold's question and smirked at that. Yeah...how do you spell that. He would wait for her to answer it.
But did he have any questions? Hmmm...nope! He just stood there and waited silently.

Maddie didn't have any more questions just yet and so she simply shook her head. NOPE, she was good for now. She'd be SURE to ask if any other questions popped up along the way, though. MHM!
For now she was ready to get moving. Could they do SPELLS today? Or something else that didn't involve sitting? Cause as MUCH as she liked hearing about all this new information, she was SUPER anxious to put what she'd learned into action and she wasn't sure HOW to make that happen but she HOPED Romanos had something in mind.
Turning her focus to Cutty, her eyebrows knitted together momentarily. "Can you expand on what you mean by caught in the middle, Mister Mordaunt?"
............................................
"Correct. Simply, they are called The Cold Ones due to their drastic chilled temperatures. Keep in mind though, they weren't originally named by witches or wizards. Even so, that doesn't mean witches and wizards weren't a part of their history either. In fact, like zombies, these particular creatures were once magical beings like you and I as well." Taking a moment's time, she waved her wand around the floating zombie arm. Quickly, it became even more pale and turned a tinge of blue, icing over from the tips of the fingertips, to the broken edge where the elbow should be.
"They look something similar to this." She pointed to the iced over arm. "And while we know their place of origin, which is Antarctica, the dawn of their creation is still...unknown. What has been hypothesized however, is back in the 17th century, when talks of the deathly hallows still lingered on the air, an experiment to re-create the resurrection stone had gone wrong and ended up leaking into the ice. And for those witches and wizards who did not make it through the cold, who had laid rest in the very same ice, eventually became the Døde Sjeler."
Dramaaatiiiic.
"Any questions so far?"

Twisting a strand of her hair between her fingers, Beverly shook her head. Nope, no questions.
Explain what he meant...yes. But not here. Not now. In front of everyone. He had secrets, Romanos. Secrets. "Yes, Professor, but can I come and see you in your office lateh?" Or even her sculpture garden. He liked that place.
When she asked the class at large if they had any questions so far regarding the Cold Ones, his eyes remained transfixed upon the blue and icicled arm. He wanted to ask her more about the resurrection stone and it's part in all of this, but decided on something more simple. "Can a Cold One, like a zombie, infect you? Blagh!" He shut his eyes and turned his head sharply as Beverly Wayne shook her head and the tips of her long, dark hair whipped him in the face.
Nope, no questions. The one he did have was just asked by a Slytherin. So yeah. Best, just relax in his seat and listen to Romanos answer it. Made sense to Nigel and he was interested in where they were going with this whole zombie thing,
Not like she would have one in her closet or anything. That would be crazy......
....and awesome.

Two. This made two times she'd accidentally attacked Cutty Mordaunt. Except this time it was just hair on the face. Beverly blinked at him as if asking what she had done, yet looking as if she'd fully intended it, which she really hadn't. It was all a game. What the game was, she didn't know, but she was playing.
"Cherry blossoms," was all she whispered, low enough for the two to hear. Did he get a whiff of it? If yes, then she had just told him her scent. If not, then he now knew her scent.

Well that was...interesting? Creepy? Something. Maybe both. Especially since that was only a guess at their origins and not the actual story. So what was the actual one? Penelope kinda wanted to know, even though it seemed impossible since no one really did.
Any questions she had would have been about that, but since it was unknown, her hand stayed down. No questions here.

"Witches and wizards may have been the first to step foot onto Antarctica, but it were the muggles who coined the term, many years later when they came across them, intertwining their experience into legend and myth. Exactly who, I do not know the names." Nor were they ever written in history either.

Directing his attention back to Professor Romanos, he listened as she explained how the Dode Sjeler came to being. Hmmm...possibly as a result of the Resurrection Stone's power gone awry. Very interesting indeed. He never knew that there were so many varieties of Zombies. But yes he had a question...well maybe three....to ask. Raising his hand, he blurted them out.
"Professor, I know the movie industry is known to distort facts but I was wondering, being dead and all, do zombies still need to eat in order to stay alive...I mean continue to exist? If yes, are they
strictly carnivores, or will they eat anything living, even plants? And where do you think the zombies we encountered in Peru originated from? Are they part of the North American strain or were they conjured up by El Hombre Dorado himself to guard his hidden treasures?"
Oh my, a question overload. "One at a time, Mister Strand." she chuckled, shifting her weight to her other foot. Settle in for a moment while she answered all of these. "No, they do not need to eat in order to stay alive, however, yes...they are strictly carnivores, though that doesn't mean their diet is mainly humans." Animals and magical creatures alike were known to be fed upon.
"As for Peru..." she tilted her head to the side a little in thought. "I am not a hundred percent sure. My theory however is that some came from the lost wizards in 1263 during the battle against the goblins for access to El Dorado. Others could be from unexpected travelers that stumbled across it over the years."
You never know where a zombie has been.

Taking a look at the zombie arm, her eyebrows raised a bit. "Perhaps due to the lack of blood flow and the affect of the chilled temperatures of Antarctica." She honestly wasn't an expert on their anatomy. "Others suggest that it's a camouflage of sort. Helps blend them into their white surroundings."

"Perhaps this summer was an eye opening experience. You just never know what's going to show up in some of the most unlikely of places. Any information about a topic is better than none." Gaze settled upon the Hufflepuff, the professor raised an eyebrow. Not in a stern way. It was more of a question that came up out of the blue. Although, it wasn't like she hadn't heard it before. "Or perhaps I'll let you mull over the answer and you can let me know in essay form due by the beginning of next class."
Yes? No? Maybe?

"Now that is a very good question. One that I was just about to go over in fact." Wonderful timing! What an unfortunate hair incident though. Oh dear. "Cold Ones can infect you, though their methods are more...tame, compared to a zombie. They are rather intelligent creatures, despite the reputation zombies have as being simpleminded. They take great care at choosing which battles they participate in."
"That being said, you cannot become infected through a bite. The part you'll want to avoid is their hands. They are indeed magical creatures...and can freeze your heart through a simple touch." With a short glance to the frozen zombie are, she started to move throughout the class. "Freezing your heart doesn't necessarily turn you into a Cold One, however, it is their preferred method of taking a life. Freezing a heart does not damage the body. They'd much rather have their subjects be as able-bodied as possible. What they do afterwards with the body however, is what changes you into not a Cold One...but a sub-division of the creature called the Skygge, which means shadow in Norwegian. Their naming was due to the resemblance you keep of your former self. Never really aging or decomposing. Like a shadow of your past." Poetic. "But, we'll learn more about them later on."
Subtly taking a glance at a few notes while walking by, she continued. "Only witches and wizards can become true Cold Ones. In the end of their life, they must lay deep in the ice that is laced with the potion that was spilled within it so many years ago. The wizarding world has tried countless of times to clean it up, though due to the ice and snow melting and then re-freezing for so long, it won't come as a surprise if the entire continent is now infected." Ending up back at the front of the class, a smile suddenly appeared upon her face. "However, there is some good news out of all of this. We have discovered how to defeat these creatures."
"Can anyone take a guess on what to do before we get into our practical portion of class?"

Marigold grinned right back at the professor as she copied the spelling down into her notebook. She had been soooo wrong with that spelling. Good heavens. And when did she start using old lady phrases like that? She dipped her quill into her ink again and again as she copied the rest of the notes down, spelling Skygge correctly because she recognized the word. Maybe from an uncle? She didn't know. But practical portion! She was so excited she almost jumped up, but instead her hand leaped to the air. "Maybe some sort of heating spell? As they do 'freeze' you?" That would be SO COOL. The learning part. Not the being frozen part.

How to defeat these creatures? Well they were cold and seemed to use the cold to recruit others into their clan. So what would defeat cold?
Quickly raising his hand, Cris decided to hazard a guess. "Professor would heat do? Extreme heat like Fiendfyre? I mean it would stand to reason that fire would be their enemy, like fire is to the Yeti or the Abominable Snowman," Cris paused for a moment before continuining.
"We could also light gas torches or use Gubraithian Fire to defeat them." Yes, fire should do the trick.
Angel smiled at the Professor. "Are we learning the Incendio spell?" Angel had heard that spell made fire and since Zombies liked cold air, maybe that would get rid of bad creatures like zombies and even the ice-moster. She wondered what Scooby-Doo would make of all this if he was at the school, she thought he'd probably run a mile.

"Taking away their freezing or cold abilities." Kyroh mumbled sleepily as he raised his hand. So FIIYAAAA. And blood. Or something like that. He had said fire before though. It seemed like so long ago. Maybe in the beginning of the class. Yeah? Sleep.

This lesson was certainly making the second year more & more afraid of what was going to be coming in the lesson. Just the whole talk of zombies & undead, & Cold Ones, was almost making her want to run or hide in the very back of the classroom. Would that necessarily be a bad thing if she'd done? And would it upset the Professor?
...Well, she didn't want to upset anyone..
....at least not right..
She was so lost in her thoughts that she hadn't heard the next question about what they'd need to do before they started.

The more Lux listened to what was being taught, the less she understood things. It wasn't as if nothing was sinking in, but still. This lesson creeped her out too much for her to really get much out of it. Raising her hand, she said, "If they are the cold ones, I assume some sort of heating or fire spell would work against them." Seemed logical to her.
"Of course, Mister Mordaunt." she said with a polite short bow of her head. No further discussion until later.

Based on the information, Cutty was starting to make deductions on just what happened to an individual who'd been afflicted by a Cold One. If they didn't affect the body, then perhaps his Defense Professor meant that they affected the figurative heart. Or, even that they did affect the physical heart, but that that was the only part of the body their touch affected. What happened to you if you should be a victim of one of these creatures?

This was most interesting. Adi was fascinated about only witches and wizards being able to become Cold Ones. He wondered what went on in their heads to make them choose that path. After some thought about the next question, he raised his hand.
"Anything that causes heat, Professor?'' They way he figured it was that since the Cold Ones are literally cold, heat would counteract them.

Cold one/zombie battle... come on say it! She was so down for this. A frozen heart didn't sound like a fun time at all, but these cold ones sounded wimpy. AJ listened to everybody else's response and she did think the ones that said using heat were on the right track, but something else came to the first year's mind.
With a raised hand she asked, "Professor, if they aren't aggressive can't we just blast them away with our magical stick?" That seemed like a perfectly logical thing to her and that shouldn't even use that much energy.

Cold ones were COOL. Heh, geddit? COOL cause COLD? Ehehehe. She'd have to run that one by Dima and Freckles later cause it was comedy GOLD! For now, she listened closely to Professor Romanos, brown eyes wide and following her every move. She didn't want to miss ANY of this information. Not ONE bit.
After ALL the facts were presented, Maddie considered how best to defeat such a creature. If they froze your hearts with their hands, you'd want to make it so they couldn't touch you, right? Made sense to Maddie so her own hand went up, fingers wiggling in anticipation. "Does it have to do with getting rid of their hands or fingers, Professor? So they can't touch you and make your heart all frozen forever and ever?"
And was Kyroh falling asleep? Maddie peeked over and raised her eyebrows slightly. If he DID fall asleep, she'd wake him before any of the FUN stuff happened. There WAS going to be fun stuff, wasn't there?

They really WERE going to be learning how to fight these creatures, weren't they? Oh man, if he had a diary, this would go IN IT. Instead, he flipped the page of his notebook over and started jotting down as much as he could. He wanted to ask why only witches and wizards are able to turn into one of the Cold Ones but he could hazard a guess.

As for the question, Grayson placed his quill down and looked over at the Professor. See, some people had good suggestions what with the fire and whatnot but practising it in a classroom? Somebody was going to set their robes on fire. Oh the chaos. Oh the DRAMA. He'd be more than happy to watch something like that but surely Romanos wouldn't. Shame.
Soooo, he was going to go with something else. Maybe something similar. "Would we be able to use Confringo?" he asked, his hand in the air, "Assuming they can be exploded," Why not? "It'll cause them to burst into flames too." Fire and Ice. Opposites and whatnot.
