Creatures escaping sounded like a dream come true. They weren't escaping, really. They were returning to the wild, where they wanted to be. It didn't actually make much sense to Mo to stop them from doing something that would make them happy. He prodded West with his elbow in a general sort of hello before offering a useful suggestion to the professor. "I think the best way to handle a creature is to ascertain what its needs are and why it is acting the way it is. You'd react different to an animal in panic than you would to one that was hungry or curious. If you can meet the needs or assuage the emotion, you'll earn the creature's trust and have more success dealing with it." |
Maddie was very curious about the unicorns Professor Thompson had mentioned. They had been running around Hogsmeade? That was interesting. JUST like it was interesting that she'd met a Centaur on the grounds not too long ago. They BOTH lived in the forest, yeah? And if they were both OUT of the forest, did that mean something bad was now IN the forest? Her brown eyes widened considerably and she looked around, only vaguely aware of the fact that her classmates were offering thoughts on how to handle creatures. UHHH. "What Mo said." YEAH! Mo was smart so it was totally smart to back him on whatever it was he had said. His lips HAD been moving so he must have offered an answer. Also, she DIDN'T see where the mysterious figure had gone but hopefully it wasn't on its way UP HERE. |
Creature escaped and out of control.........what to do? Jasmine listened as the Professor posed the first question of the day. This was a tough one because even the most mild mannered creature could be dangerous when panicked and out of control. Jasmine raised her hand. "I guess the first thing to do would be to remain calm. It wouldn't do you or the creature any good if you freaked out too. Then, you probably want to keep your distance, at least at first. A frightened creature may not take kindly to being bum rushed." After that, Jasmine was not quite sure what she would do. She listened to her classmates as they gave their varied suggestions. After the fireworks show, Jasmine responded to Penelope's question. "I don't know what that was, but I'm sure we weren't the only ones who saw it. I'll bet that the school staff is checking things out as we speak." Jasmine remained silent when the Professor asked where the mysterious shadow had gone. She didn't want to upset Penelope further and some other students had already responded to his question. |
SPOILER!!: Simon, Cutty, Grayson, and Cutty. XD SPOILER!!: Professor ...yes. Yes he was there when he overslept and was late for his meeting with Mordred. He had to be honest though. He didn't know what to do, and hid behind crates and observed instead from afar. Maybe...maybe that's the right thing to do? But then...maybe not if he was the only one around, yes? "I guess you have to act accordingly then, sir. If the creature is aggravated by...something, then maybe it's best to stay a good distance away from it first and stay calm. Besides, a person can't think straight if he or she is frightened or taken aback by the situation." So yes, they have to keep calm first, then assess the situation. Ethan however, looked confused as the Professor went towards one of the windows and looked outside. So...he noticed something too? Well, he was waiting for them to arrive earlier anyway, so yes he took note of it. And...shadow? The third year didn't offer any answer because he missed the brightness or whatever it is outside. |
I think the first thing is to keep calm and to keep the distance from the creature, without getting to run... And..The shadow?..Lucy doesn't know where the shadow had gone... |
SPOILER!!: Contributing thoughts Javy listened to each and everyone's contributing thoughts, curtly nodding at each one. Some were quite.. 'interesting' suggestions, but no matter. "Excellent, take a point each. As many of you have mentioned, any creature's behavior is the first thing we are to take care of. Making sure they are comfortable before trying to coerce them into following our own commands." Now for the brief refresher, "Last year with Professor Fuller, we had brushed over the topic on the use of Animal Fidelius. The charm to temporarily remove any fear or hesitation from acting on their command. Now how different is this from the illegal Imperius curse? Other than it actually being a charm, while you're Imperised you lose awareness up until the curse is lifted on any actions you're made to do. Whilst with Animal Fidelius, they are fully aware and left feeling no different once the charm is lifted." Speaking from experience.. but of course there was always the difficulty, "Naturally though, unless you're a skillful castor, performing the charm will be easier on a creature you've become familiar and bonded with. So now what if you have no time to bond with them?" This question didn't need to be answered. If they hadn't taken mental notes, now would be good as any. "As Miss Cambridge suggested, there is a variety of spells that one could use. It often takes more than just one spell to help subdue and maintain control again." Taking his wand to clear the board behind him to prepare a full list. "Now what other spell would you suggest and how would such a spell help?" It was difficult to hide the concern, especially from the students reactions. Yet Javy managed to cover it with his blank face, he was use to doing this. Despite their distance, he could make out some of Leo the Librarian's words. He was going to investigate. Seeing him and the familiar-looking Gryffindor student already make there way, he had a sudden thought. They were going outside.. in the cold. Yeah. "Miss Somerlad and Miss Guidry.. please take some of these unused blankets out for Mr. Kitridge and Mr. Bay and see if they require any other assistance." |
Hmm. Hmmm. Maybe one of his answers in his Charms Homework might help, no? Ethan got his hand out of his blanket and raised it just beside his head. Merlin, the cold weather really should just quit it. “Professor? How about the Placement Charm we used on the winged horses? The charm could be used to prevent physical contact with the creature so as not to aggravate them further.” He’d really hate it if someone touched him if he wasn’t feeling comfortable, let alone be touched by a stranger, yes? And, how exactly will this help? “…from what I have seen back in Hogsmeade, if I was the only person there, I’d use the charm to give it food. Unicorns don’t trust males…but it needs to be fed, so there.” Ethan’s attention however shifted again to the commotion that was happening. Why is Mr. Kitridge and a certain Mr. Bay out in the cold? And…now Professor Thompson is asking Cassia and Jasmine to help? ... Yep. He’s got a bad feeling about this. |
Text Cut: Professor It seemed that mostly everyone had interesting thoughts. It was both fun and enlightening to listen to what the others had thought of or would do in such situation. And if anything happened, it would always be better if there were more than one person. The more skills, eyes and ideas the better. And although, she tried to focus her undivided attention on the professor, she couldn't help not steal glances at the other meeting where Mister Kitridge was leaving? She wasn't quite sure but she doubted as much. It looked like she wasn't the only one slightly distracted by the situation. She was rather curious as to what were the bool club peeps up to. "Of course, sir," She said as Professor Thompson addressed her and the Ravenclaw girl. Seemed like her curiosity was going to be fulfilled. The seventh-year rose to her feet and picked up some blankets leaving others for her partner and edged closer to the exit. Better if they went there together of course. |
Like everyone else Jasmine was distracted by the goings on outside and in the Library. She became concerned when she realized that Mr. Kitridge and Bay were going outside. She looked at Cris with a worried look on her face. Then Professor Thompson asked her and another student to help take warm blankets to them. "Yes Professor", Jasmine said. Getting up slowly, she went over to the pile of blankets and picked up a handful. Her co-blanket deliverer had already picked up some blankets, so they were ready. She gave Cris one last glance before she left, hoping that she would be back. Trying to maintain a neutral expression, Jasmine headed out of the Library in search of the investigation team. At least she had someone to go with her so everything would be fine, right? |
Cris looked worriedly up at Jasmine when Professor Thompson asked her to bring blankets out to assist Mr. Kitridge and Bay while they were out there in the freezing cold. He would have volunteered to go along as well, but since the Professor hadn't asked him to and since he was confident that the Professor knew what he was doing, he remained silent and mouthing Be Careful to her before he watched his girlfriend leave the library. He turned worried eyes to look at Professor Thompson and struggled to think of an answer to the question the Professor had posed. No time to bond with them? Cris raised his hand and hazarded a guess. "Professor, maybe we could use the Memory Charm on them. If they can't remember what scared them in the first place, they'll start to calm down?" Cris shared his thoughts before gazing back at the library entrance. Where was Jasmine and Cassia? Surely, delivering blankets and assisting didn't take that long. Cris couldn't take the worry and suspense any longer. He raised his hand, a pleading look on his face,"Professor, is it okay, if I go out there and help too?" he couldn't sit here, while Jasmine was out there with the others. All of them could possibly be in danger. |
Grayson had completely missed whatever it was that Thompson had said. Why? Cutty Mordaunt wanted to be held. Cared for. Wanted these strong biceps wrapped around him in a lovingly manner. Grayson snorted when Ethan did before saying, "You'll be fine, Cutty boy." Back pats for you for now. And apparently, he had lost his marbles, according to Snowstorm Man Ethan. "Snowstorm Man Ethan sounds like a heroic name." It did. And this was a GOOD thing. "Dunno, Slytherins gotta stick together." Something Cassia would approve of. Speaking of, 'sup Head Girl. She got a nod in return. Andddddddd Thompson was talking again. Which meant that he WAS paying attention this time. Uh huh. Animal Fidelius? A charm to remove fear or hesitation from acting on their command? WHY in the name of Merlin hadn't HE been there to try that spell out? JEEZ. It sounded like a freaking BRILLIANT spell. Making sure that they were friendly and whatnot. It would save them the time of making sure that the creature wasn't going to run off OR bite him on his leg. Though, now he did wonder how well it worked with a not-so-friendly person. Another spell that could help? Er. Jeez. That was a hard question. "Does the Cheering Charm work on animals?" Er, maybe he should explain so that it didn't sound like he wanted there to be so much happiness in the world. That wasn't very him. "Because if they're happier, they're more likely to trust you." And you could carry on with your task. |
So, wait--they were just going to carry on as if nothing had just happened? Also...what was with everybody wanting to be Harry Potter and going out to save the day? Sophie was going to volunteer alright. She was going to volunteer to just stay put and let everybody else put themselves in danger. But for now...what were they even talking about? "Has anybody said Arresto Momentum yet?" she asked. "Because that slows the movement of an object, and buying us a little extra time wouldn't hurt." |
"You could use a shield charm to protect yourself from the animal while you wait for help to come," Maddie offered distractedly. She was STILL wondering what was going on OUTSIDE the meeting and once her mind was focused on something she was curious about, it was very hard to turn her attention to something else, especially without answers. She WAS trying, though. Honest. |
Penelope sorta wanted to go out there too and see what was going on, but at the same time, she also didn't. 'Cause it was cold outside and she had a nice warm blanket in here, and sure, she could take the blanket outside like Cassia and the Ravenclaw were, but she also didn't want to move. So yeah, she wasn't gonna complain about staying in here for this meeting thing. Probably wasn't much going on out there now anyway. So anyway, spells. "Maybe you could use a Summoning Charm to summon some food or something else to make the creature want to trust you." That was the only suggestion she could come up with right now. |
Oh hey where was Cassia going and how come she hadn't volunteered to go too? It didn't matter so much where it was or how dangerous it was. Curiosity was always enough to lunge her forward. As it stood, it was Cassia and some Ravenclaw going while they sat here answering questions. If only the Professor had brought food with him. Kitridge would never have to know. They wouldn't say anything if he wasn't saying anything. But yes, back to the discussion where she was pleased to see the Professor taking her idea just as seriously as everyone else's. The Gryffindor stuck her hand up. "You could always try the body binding curse if the creature isn't too big. That would get 'em holding still long enough for whatever." And she did mean whatever. The possibilities were endless once you successfully subdued an animal. |
O____O So were they just going to ignore the fact that something really funky just happened? Because this smelled like trouble. It also smelled like fear. And fear smelled a whole lot like sweat. And... No... It was not coming from Zander pft. Okay maybe a little. But he had taken a shower this morning and everything! Hopefully the two girls wouldn't noticed. The fact that they were all enchilada-ed together was really helping. Plus it made it even more of a reason to keep his composure. He couldn't have them thinking that he was terrified. He was the man. And a Gryffindor man nonetheless. Either way Zander was a bit too distracted to give on a full answer. So he just listened to the others before contributing himself. "I agree with Ethan, Sir!" he said giving a nod to Simon's friend and now hopefully his friend too? He was a cool guy. And Zander wanted to be friends with him... Please? "Since we used the placement charm in class, I figure that it'd be a good charm for the creatures. You could use it for food like Ethan suggested, and then you could probably use it for placing maybe something on the creature that would help you bring it back without freaking it out by getting too close?" He wanted to say like a leash. But that would probably be frowned upon. Either way, the placement charm could definitely come in handy. "And if you need to interact with the creature, but you aren't sure if it's safe or not, it'd be a good idea to keep distance. So the charm would help with that too I suppose." Boy was he sure rambling on now. He just needed to distract himself. |
How much time had gone by since Jasmine and the Head Girl left the library? Cris studied his watch again. For Cris, it had been long enough. Getting up from the blanket he was sitting on, he wandered over to the window to gaze out. He could see his breath fogging up the glass in front of him and he wondered whether Jasmine was warm enough out there. More importantly, he also wondered whether she was safe. He turned back to look desperately at Professor Thompson, before turning back to gaze out the window again. We should all be out there instead of in here, Cris wanted to tell the Professor. How is talking about how one should deal with a creature relevant while we're inside here, safe and cosy inside the library? We should be out there right now, Cris wanted to turn around and tell the Professor. But, he remained silent and continued to stare helplessly out the window instead. |
Leah was trying hard not to just turn around and stare out the window. She was wondering what was going on outside. Jumping slightly as the professor asked another question, she realized that they were just going to carry on. Okay then. The Hufflepuff reminded herself that she should be volunteering to go outside and help like Cris, but her cold hands told her that she was too cold to do anything. Grrr. Raising up her hand, the second year said, "I don't know much about spells, but I think conjuring food to attract the animal would work." she agreed to the older Gryffindor girl. FOOD solves everything! Hmm okay that was a bit of a stretch. |
Lucy said:"Professor, maybe we could use the Legilimens charm.. Does the Legilimens Charm work on animals? If we can find out what scared the animals we can help them to overcome their fears...!" |
After meeting Grayson, Simon had been pretty much silent the whole time during the meeting. He'd zoned out completely as he kept on thinking of what could have possibly caused most of his fellow colleagues to become spooked out. So he listened to the others. Or at least tried too. He hadn't been aware of people leaving the room to go run errands for the Professor as he assumed that it was normal. But when he saw some students carrying blankets, he sat up more and paid more attention. Focus Simon. Focus. He wondered what they were possibly up to. He stared out the window briefly before refocusing when Thompson asked them a question. Ah question time! Well if they had no time to bond with the animal then he supposed that they ought to be courteous and treat the animal with due respect. Food would help sort the situation out, wouldn't it? He figured that they probably should keep the animal calm throughout the whole situation. He raised his hand and offered a response. "I also think that having food out would be the quickest way to get the creature to work with you. However, when your giving the creature food, you shouldn't make quick movements; otherwise, you may scare it away," he said. Treat a creature with respect. That was an important part of dealing with any type of animal: magical or not. |
Javy nodded as they had left, his seat was closest to the window so he could idly glance over every now and then. Yes, the two young ladies would only need to deliver the blankets to them and if they needed any help, they would let him know.. Supposedly. To the younger Strand brother who decided to stand right by to look out the window, "Have a seat, Mr. Strand." Choosing now to glance out the window, he could see Leo and young Mr. Bay already out there with.. Piers SPOILER!!: Replies After casually adding to the list the spells mentioned, Javy kept his attention on the class, "Alright, those are some good additions. Now of course there are plenty more." Giving the board a few taps as he added one of his own. "The tickling charm can be considered as quaint, but another effective spell if targeted at the right spot. While a few stunning spells can work, a tickling charm can also send a creature on their back in one spot effectively powerless." Same reason as to why no one ever wants to be tickled. Quote:

The third year looked from Cris to Professor Thompson and was still wondering why he let students go out in the cold? It's a good thing it wasn't him because he's done with the weather, really. Ethan took out his notebook and jotted down notes as soon as they moved on with the discussion. Yep, those will definitely come in handy just in case he's out in the open again. Ethan looked up just in time to see the Professor get a box from his bag. He got the box from him and got a piece of toy from it. A hippogriff? The third year examined his toy and passed the box to the next person beside him. |
Maddie wouldn't have guessed the tickling charm but she could see how that might work. She could also see how that might earn you a hoof to the head but to each his or her own, she supposed. And then she got herself a toy hippogriff. The small brunette observed it curiously, ignoring any thoughts about the sparks outside because she figured it was being taken care of and she couldn't do anything about the situation from all the way in here. "Here." Next person could take it away, now. |
Cris turned to look at his Care of Magical Creatures Professor, when he heard the man call his name. He turned to look one last time out the window before returning to his seat on the blanket even though he knew his full concentration would not be in this room right now. He took the box that a young Ravenclaw handed to him and looked inside. If it were some other time, Cris would have been thoroughly amused at what he saw inside. But now was not one of moments. Reaching in, he picked up one of the toy Hippogriffs and passed the box on. |
Even though the third year was shivering but she was smiling even after what had happened because she figured that smiling would make everything better but for once it didn't work. The blonde frowned and looked at the other students but then listened to the Professor. This meet was interesting but what she had seen outside just scared her so much that she couldn't properly enjoy the meeting like she wanted too. Emmylou grabbed the box from the older student that had given it to her. |
