Despite today's lesson being held in the early afternoon, an unusual chill had taken over the Astronomy classroom. The professor had a few Heating Charms in place, but they did not seem to be making too much of a difference. The desks are arranged in their usual semi circle and as you approach your seat you notice that there is something strategically placed right in the middle of the desk.
Professor Flamsteed is standing at the front of the classroom leaning against his desk with his backside with his attention on the long red balloon in his hands. Twisting and untwisting it, he tried to remember the correct steps to making the balloon creation...but only succeeded in making that horribly squeaking noise cause by balloon rubber rubbing against itself. SQUEAKY REEEEEEEEK SQUEAKY SQUEAKY REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK.
Did you remember to use the lint roller on the small table outside of the classroom? It was there next to the sign that reads, "Not to be used as a brush for your hair."
So come on in and have a seat. Class will begin shortly.

Angel was totally loving this lesson and now it was time to have a guess, though she wasn't sure of the answer. "Is it something to do with how fast the weather travels?" Angel was totally lost about what 10km had to do with Astronomy, she knew that people did 10k races but that was about it.

Aww lookit the Professor all out of breath and stuff. The man surely needed some time to get in shape. Hehe. Not that Adi himself wasn't feeling the effects of that jog.
So what was the significance of this 10 km? Adi hadn't the slightest clue. Obviously it had something to do with the weather. Maybe it was the distance weather clouds too to form or something? Ah well. He'd wait for the answer from Flamsteed.
Merlin, Flamsteed was spewing a whole lot of information at once. She hadn't thought to bring a piece of parchment and quill along to take notes as they went around in their big circle, but she wasn't sure that she could've even written any legible notes while jogging anyway. How did he expect them to remember everything?
At least there was one boy who was trying to take notes while they were jogging. That was funny of him, but she doubted they were very neat notes anyway.
Then they were stopping, though, and Sophie came to a halt, breathing slowly and lowering her heart rate fairly quickly. She gave funny looks to those who seemed out of breath and, for a moment, she considered starting a Hogwarts Running Club next term to encourage people to get into proper shape, but she lost the thought as Flamsteed continued the lesson with such great enthusiasm. Their goal was ten kilometers? She could've run that whole thing, she bet. She usually did about half of that around the grounds on a normal day, but she was certain she was up to that kind of challenge.
Why was it significant? She didn't know until Mo answered with lots of detail and certainty. Yeah. He had to have been right, the big ol' nerd.
Hazel stopped running to catch her breath. Did the professor say they had only jogged a third or fourth of 10 kilometers? That was almost 3 kilometers! She didn't know whether to say that was a lot or a little, so she tried to answer his question... but she couldn't. What was so special about 10 kilometers? Considering the class she was in, Hazel decided it had something to do with air or weather or something like that. Not a bit clue. She kept her hand down and waited for the professor to tell them the answer.
Kace was glad they were stopping. He felt a little tightness in his chest. He was breathing in and out. He had his hands on top of his head to help the air flow. He was winded from the winter that is for sure. He was usually like this in sports camps. He heard the professor ask a question and 10 kilometers? Hmmm what did that have to do with the class? He grinned and raised his hand. "Professor is that how much we are going to run? Are you training for a 10 kilometer run?" It mean it seemed logical to him. He was working up a sweat.

Marigold finally stopped running. She had been too out of breath to answer the questions, so she stopped and just breathed for a while before actually thinking of an answer. They had run a lot, okay, especially for someone who didn't really exercise other than climbing the Hogwarts stairs.
"Maybe that's how big a storm is." Was that her answer? Merlin, she needed more oxygen in her brain.

Wait, weren't they talking about whether. Caleb stopped and tried to catch his breath, quite glad to be done running. It had warmed him up substantually, which was good, but he was still a bit chilled He was starting to think he'd never warm up fully again...
Right, back to the question. What did running a 10k have to do with weather? He was so confused. So he just decided to flat out voice his confusion.
"That's the length of a foot race, right? I have no idea what it has to do with weather, though," he said. Did Flamsteed have any water bottles or anything around? He was thirsty!

Yes! They were stopping, which meant this was Hayden's favorite part of the lesson so far. And, by the way things were going, it was looking like it would continue to be her favorite part of the lesson. The stopping, that is, not the new question. She stopped and caught her breath while thinking. She had no idea why 10 kilometers was significant. It was a familiar number though. "People run 10 kilometer runs but I don't know why." All she knew is that they got organized like they would for a marathon and then ran 10 kilometers. Why that amount? And why would people want to run that much? She hoped they didn't actually have to do that. Running really was not her thing. Weren't they sometimes called 10K run/walks? If that was the case, she would choose to walk thank you very much.
They still didn't have to raise their hands, did they? Because Hayden had just shouted out her answer like they'd been doing so far.
That was a whole lot of information right there. Beverly processed everything Airey was saying. Would have been nice if she was at her desk taking notes, but retaining this in her head would have to do for now.
She almost groaned when he told them to stop. She was barely warming up. Bev could run for miles and miles, but oh well. At least they got to move around. Gathering her hair up into a ponytail before she started stretching, Beverly thought about the question. Why is 10 kilometers significant? She blinked thoughtfully. Inner groan. She needed her text book. Why isn't Astronomy her strong suit? Hmm? Then she'd be able super to impress Airey get the best marks.
But she was listening to everyone's answers. Some making more sense than others.
To tell the truth, Leah had stopped before the professor told them too, but she hoped that she was short enough to hide behind all those tall students. She was still relieved however, when everyone else had stopped and she did not feel guilty anymore. Instead of feeling warmer, the Hufflepuff was distracted. Very distracted. She could not take in any of the information given and was frustrated.

"Weather! YES! That was the answer I was looking for!" he exclaimed as he leaped a few times to show his excitement. "When you combine all of these ingredients in the Earth's thermosphere you get the weather. Now, we think of temperature as how warm or cold something is. But the reality is that temperature is caused by molecules zooming around. The faster they zoom, the warmer it gets, just like how you are all zooming around and getting warmer." See? Method to his madness. And he wasn't done just yet. "Now, Miss McAlistor demonstrated something just a few moments ago when she gave the wall a whack with her hand." Very good, by the way. She was clearly on the same page with him in terms of demonstrations. "These molecules in the Earth's atmosphere are constantly bouncing each other and everything else around them - your arm, the ground, a tree....just for some examples - and they exert a force on those surfaces. The force exerted by these air molecules bouncing off things is called air pressure. Now, I want you all to try this out byGENTLY bumping into one another. BE THE MOLECULE! THINK LIKE A MOLECULE! We already know that as air molecules move faster that the temperature rises, but what happens to air pressure when the temperature goes up?"

Oh… so he did hear her? Well, he thought she was just excited about the balloons, and she was. Deciding it was best to just keep it at that AJ kept her mouth shut and her legs moving. The first year wasn’t even winded yet. Sports paid off ya know!
Human dodgeball? Awesome. She was on it. The whole having to be gentle thing was a bit of a disappointment, but she would try.
Bump, bump, bump. She knew for sure that she had knocked into Ian, Adi, and her sister, but she couldn’t be sure about the rest. ”It goes up too?’ Questions had to be answered while she was knocking into people.

To understand how volume is related to air pressure and temperature, we need to understand two laws. "OH! You can stop bumping into each other now." He was positive that the point had been made.
No more bumping into each other? Was he sure that he wanted them to stop that already? It was truly great fun after all. AJ did one last gentle bump to the person closest to her. BUMP. Okay, the bumping was completely out of her system now. She could listen to the questions somewhat properly now.
Charles? Who was Charles? That name did ring a bell and one thing did come to mind. “There’s an equation that has a p, v and c in it.” That was about all that she knew though.

Jogging, she was still jogging. AJ was in shape, but she was starting to feel it now. Her heart was pumping and boy did it feel good. She hadn't really got much exercise at Hogwarts this term, and she needed to fix that. This lesson was making her realize how much she had been missing it.
AJ stopped jogging as soon as the professor said the word. She had no idea why 10 kilometers was important. "Because 10 is your favorite number." 10 was a nice number.

Ian stopped 'jogging' and began to try and gather his breath. It really had been a LONG run for him. He was out of good physical shape and being trapped indoors because of the weather had not suited him to get any better than that. Of course being a book worm who loved the indoors also contributed.
He sucked in a deep breath and posited 10 km is the distance at which the weather systems that impact our daily lives are formed?

No longer wheezing, Airey began to perform a few spirited hip twists while still catching his breath. Maybe he should pull a page from Medea's book and make them all do some yoga as part of the cool down...Hmmm...
Although he was hardly qualified to instruct students in yoga, so he was going pass that opportunity up.

Like most of the class as it would seem, the Gryffindor was lost on this 10 km thing and it's significance but that might have been because of all the deep breathing and just winding down from the job she was doing.
Giving his students a glance over and quick nod of encouragement, he took a step forward with his left leg. "Alright everyone, hip flexor stretch. Hold it 20 seconds with either leg. Really lean into it. You wouldn't want to be sore tomorrow." You know, and be even less mobile about the castle than they already were considering they were all snowed in.

Chuckling softly, Airey flashed Miss Newell an encouraging smile before his attention was drawn to Mr. Toussaint and his response. "As Mr. Toussaint implies, a light year is an incredibly far distance. Much much MUCH farther than 10 km. In fact...take 10 km and multiply it by 946,100,000,000 km and you'll be at a light year."
Would be quite the impossible feat to jog 9,461,000,000,000 km in the span of one lesson. Sweet solstice though...if anyone were to accomplish that safely, well, there would be a sturdy reward in for them.
Or perhaps there was a project to be had next term. Yes, the wheels in Airey Flamsteed's head were turning. BWAHAHA!

"Well, it was the goal," he chuckled as he switched to stretching his right leg. "But as I told Mr. Barrington, no 10 km runs for me this term." Besides running that far being extremely unappealing to begin with, the thought of running it through the corridors and having to deal with the moving staircases was incredibly ......... gross.

"Storms vary in size. Some can be incredibly massive to comparatively small," he replied. His own weather experimentation had been trying to figure out just how big the blizzard was, but so far his instruments were proving useless. Freezing up and breaking due to the extreme subzero temperatures.
He was hoping that perhaps today that could change.

"Suppose for the challenge and it is a rather nice round number," he speculated. Perhaps there was some historical context having to do with the number 10...and maybe even some Arithmancy related meaning to it.
But students could look into that on their own time.

Simon blinked, utterly baffled by Airey's question about the signifigance of 10 kilometres. Wait. What? Uhh... Did it have something to do with the atmosphere? "Does the 10 kilometres have something to do where weather takes place? Somewhere up in the atmosphere? The Trophos-something-sphere?" he guessed. Yeah that was totally it. The Trophos-something-something- sphere.

"EXCELLENT, MR. TINKER! EXCELLENT. I hope you all have been paying attention to your classmates, because Mr. Simon, Mr. Branxton, and Mr. Tinker are right on the galleon," he beamed towards everyone as he began to do some shoulder rolls. "The Earth's atmosphere is divided up into five layers. I used to refer to them as the Fantastic Five when I was a child and designed super heroes based on my scientific knowledge of what each layer did. Even wrote my own comic book series." He was, of course, assuming that his students were somewhat familiar with the Fantastic Four, yes? If not, well, he was sounding even more insane. Nothing out of the ordinary there. BUT OH HOMEWORK IDEA! "These layers act like warm blankets and keep the Earth warm. Without these layers of the atmosphere, it would be MUCH colder and life would be impossible Now, atmosphere is really just a fancy word for air, and just as air is what keeps the Earth warm, the blankets and jackets you use are designed with fibers to hold air against your body and THIS is what keeps you warm."

"Of these five layers, we will just be focusing on the troposphere today. As Mr. Branxton and Mr. Tinker reiterated, and Miss Campbell alluded to, this is the layer of the atmosphere where the Earth's weather takes place. It is very thin, having a thickness from about 7 to 8 km at the poles to about 16 to 18 km at the Equator. If we were to complete our 10 km run and could somehow run vertically towards space from where we stand now, we would reach the edge of the troposphere." Chew on that! Every person who completed a 10 km marathon had run to the edge of the first layer of the Earth's atmosphere. CRAZY TO THINK ABOUT, YEAH?!
"Meteorologists primarily analyze conditions in the troposphere to predict the weather, although data from the other layers is useful as well. So, today, you are all going to try your hand at meteorology," he continued, gesturing towards their desks to indicate that they should all take their seats once more. "Many of you are most likely unfamiliar with how this is accomplished." Muggle devices and unfamiliarity with meteorology and all. "And while there are many methods used, we are going to do something that utilizes these," he explained as he returned to his own desk and removed a balloon from the package on his desk. "Any one care to venture a guess?"

Professors talking about their childhood was always so freaking weird. It was like seeing them out and about on a street like Diagon Alley. Just weird. To the boy, he imagined a younger version of the suit wearing Astronomer -- probably wearing a kiddy suit -- intently drawing in a little book with one of his crayons and talking wide eyed about all things to do with space.
See? Weird.
They were going to try their hand at meteorology?
Wait. HOLD ON. Were they going to try and predict the WEATHER?!
THAT SOUNDED SO FREAKING COOL. ............. If there wasn't mention of more snow. If there was going to be mentions of sunshine and HOT HOT HOT weather, this was going to be a brilliant activity. If not, the boy was going to be severely disappointed. No more snow, please. Rain was probably an okay, considering the fact that it could wash everything away.
And they were going to use a balloon to predict the weather? Er. Nope. He didn't know how this could be accomplished. Nuh uh. But a balloon. What do you do with a balloon? Launch it into the sky. And then, if you were particularly careful and the wind worked in your favour, you could send messages using the balloon too. Short distance stuff, mainly. Like across a playground.
Soooooo, using this method of thinking, Grayson raised his hand in the air. "Do you attach something to the balloon and launch it into the sky and let the reader read............ things about the weather in the atmosphere?" It was certainly a guess, alright. A bad one, probably.

Jasmine was trying to take in all of the information that had been presented. She listened as her classmates gave their thoughts and opinions. Many notes to be taken, much information to be remembered. And then the next question was posed.
Jasmine raised her hand and took a wild stab at answering the question. "Will we be using the balloon to make a barometer, to measure atmospheric pressure?" Was that even possible? Jasmine didn't know, but that was the first thing that came to her mind so she went with it.

Ian was pleased his answer had been correct. It seemed only natural that weather phenomenon occurred at 10 km above the earth's surface. He smiled and was tickled to be correct.
He listened to the explanation and next question. He answered, feeling a bit more comfortable and sure of his response. Additionally, he'd gathered his breath and was more than capable of providing an answer without gasping for air.
Sir, the balloons are used by meteorologists can help them to measure pressure, as was noted but also wind speed and direction along with atmospheric moisture levels as well. It might give indications in the changing conditions which produce unstable air which may cause storms, tornadoes and such. I would expect we'll be attempting something similar.

OOOOOOOOOOOOH OKKKKK. LIGHTBULB. Now that made sense why they would be talking about 10k's and weather. Caleb was thinking of the length in terms of distance on a HORIZONTAL basis - but he just had to think vertically. Ok now he was on the right track. Maybe it was the running too, it was warming up his brain or something.
AND, he kind of had an idea where Flamsteed was going with the next question too! Yes, the exercise had DEFINITELY helped him warm up his brain. He raised his hand anxiously. "It'll be used to determine the air pressure or something, right? If the balloon shrinks or gets larger, that means the pressure is affecting the volume of the balloon, which means...something will happen to the weather," he concluded. WHAT that something was, he didn't know, but he was on the right track, he knew that much.

Adi was impressed with Ian and his answer. His fellow Hufflepuff third year certainly knew his stuff. He was also impressed by Flamsteed and his Fantastic Five comics. He vaguely wondered if the man still had them. Those would be interesting to read.
The third year raised a hand. "We'll use the balloons to measure the atmosphere's pressure,'' he suggested.
Angel raised her hand, "Professor are we going to do some X-ray astronomy, where we will get an item and launch it into the sky, though if we are doing something like that, it's normally best outside for the best results." Angel thought a few second more before continuing. "So basically you tie an object that can help you understand the weather more." Angel wasn't sure if she was right or not but it had been worth a guess.
Agatha had gotten completely LOST in this lesson for longer than she should, and now she was struggling to understand what was going on. So much MADNESS, Merlin. But it was Airey, so she guessed that was to be expected.
She listened as they were taught about the troposphere and all that actually made sense. The air and how it kept them warm and things like that. Agatha understood that!! She listened more and then he told them they were doing something to do with meteorology. Using balloons?
....Madness. Agatha had no clue how that'd work, but she listened closely to that Hufflepuff kid's answer because he sounded like he knew what he was talking about. It was the same kid who gave her a card in Divination and that was singing his lungs out in Herbology. No wonder he knew so much about crazy stuff.
However, Agatha didn't because she was normal. She decided to keep quiet again. Besides... she kind of had no idea what to say and didn't want to make a fool of herself.

Oh, wow. That was some interesting stuff! Although, the nostalgic tangent about his childhood comic thing was a bit unnecessary to hear. Sorry prof. Your still his favorite, though.

Well, the balloon thing as the project was the obvious part, but his classmates were pretty much already blurting out what he was thinking, so just a tiny contribution sounds just about right. "Balloon. Measure. Pressure. Atmosphere." Covered, yeah?
Hmmm then why were they running then if they weren't training for a marathon?? That made no sense. He still kept up with the professor though. He heard the answer and it had to deal with the earth and the atmosphere or troposphere to be precise. He tried to remember it since he didn't have his notebook with him. He then heard the professor's next question. Why are they using the balloon? Hmm....Kace raised his hand sand said, "Perhaps to measure the volume of the balloon?" he guess was just as good as Declan's.

Ah a comic book joke. That was the point Nigel paid attention to and after that Flammy lost him again. Too much detail about weather and such. The Weather Man always lies and makes his money on guessing. Maybe Nigel should be on of them. He could be wrong everyday and nobody would care. And people would see his awesome hair on muggle TV's.
That was a nice thought.
Still, shame Flameo was not do this to compete in race or had a summer job as a clown. Would have made Nigel pay attention a little longer. Oh a question. Something about balloons. Was there helium in the class? Nigel would laugh if Flameo talked after inhaling some.
