Just as the notice boards had informed you, the kitchens have become the place for yet another lesson this term. This one being the topics of Arithmancy and Muggle Studies.
The kitchens have been rearranged with chairs around the four large work tables, somewhat of a resemblance to the great hall. There's various decorations of red and green streamers hanging overhead and sombreros of various sizes on a table by the door, along with maracas in the middle of the table for decor and decorative plates as well.
Josephina is standing by the door welcoming you, no sombrero for her, but she is equipped with a pair of rancher boots."Welcome! Bienvenido! You may select and wear one of these hats, or sombreros, for the duration of the lesson if you'd like. Take a seat and we'll begin shortly!" Hopefully after her co-professor arrived, but if not she was more than willing to begin without her.
ooc: this lesson won't actually start for a little over 24 hours from now, but feel free to get situated, put on a sombrero and be festive despite the cold

Bah, they had to go in depth with this? This wasn't really Layla's strong suit, as she really didn't believe in assigning numbers to the past in this way. The past was the past, no matter which way you looked at it.
She flipped her notebook to a free page, not knowing how much room she'd need and being only a couple of inches from the bottom of the previous page, and got to work. Once she was done, she eyed her work, making sure it was correct.
The Battle of Pueblo represented the ending of European influence in the Americas and the strength and power of the Mexican army. However, it was a short-lived ending, as the next year, the French had captured Mexico's capital city.
Despite all the mentions of food, Benjamin's eyes might have glazed over a bit. All the NEWTs studying had clearly got to the seventh year's brain, and the fact that this lesson didn't really know how to identify itself (food, numbers, history, Mexico?) wasn't helping. Quite simply, Benjamin was brain dead.
Brain. Dead.
And no, he'd never heard of any Cinco de Mayo celebrations happening in London, despite what Hadley had said.
Why were they studying Mexico, again? Blinkblink. Cue another look at Lex. Was she still as bewildered as he was, or was that just the NEWTs brain talking?
...numbers though, he could do. They were logical, and adding up didn't need much brain power right now. He grabbed some parchment and a quill from his bag, and quickly scrawled down the date Domingo had given them.
Well, that seemed fitting. Full interpretations weren't likely to be happening soon though. Not when he was STILL trying to figure out the whole Mexico history in Muggle Studies thing.

Regain that composure, Whitty. Cool, calm and collected. That's what he was going to try and be. "Exactly," he said in regards to the part about not being able to say no to his smirk, even throwing in an extra wink too. Just because. "Thanks for pairing up with me." And maaaaaybe they could do the same if they were going to be cooking. It was something to think about.
Seriously? He had hoped that SHE would do the calculations. The girl was writer at that while Whitty was better at rambling on about something as making it sound smart. "'Course I can do that. It's only fair." Since she DID do the calculations last time. So, picking up his quill, Grayson pulled a piece of parchment closer towards him and started scribbling away.
Well that had been dead simple. Especially the last one.
"Your turn! Have at it," he said, sliiiiiiding the piece of parchment over towards the third year.
He was thanking her? THANKING HER?! If only he knew how bad she had it for him, he would realize he was doing her a favor. Would she EVER tell him that? Well, of course NOT. She knew how to play it cool, and that's just what she did. "Well, thank you for asking," she said with a smile. He started work on the calculations, which seemed to take him about a minute or two longer than she thought it would. Was he only doing the first part?
...
She waited until he slid the parchment back toward her then looked down to realize he'd calculated all three. "Well, well," she said, grinning. "Isn't somebody the ambitious one?" GOOD, because she didn't care for the lazy ones. Awesome points, Grayson!
She dipped her quill in ink then started on the interpretations.
Meaning: Endings, tolerance, metamorphosis, cosmic, teaching, global awareness, perfection, power/strength, short-lived, immediacy. Interpretation: A few words really stand out to me when I think of the battle. Those words are endings, tolerances, metamorphosis, awareness, and power/strength. The Mexicans weren't expected to win the battle, but in the end, they did anyway. I think it may have helped people become more aware of the underdog and tolerant of them. The Mexicans had a power and strength that helped them and in the end, they got the change they wanted.
5 May
= 5 + 5
= 10
= 1 + 0
= 1
Meaning: Beginning, independence, innovation, leadership. Interpretation: The first two words especially stand out to me. This date marked a new beginning for Mexico. They wanted their independence, but in order to do that, they had to finally stand up to the Europeans and fight for what they wanted. Against all odds, they won the battle and gained their own leadership rather than being ruled by someone else.
5
= 5
Meaning: Change, transition, progressive thinking, resourceful, freedom, versatility, physical world, physical touch. Interpretation: The fifth was the date when the Mexicans won the battle and therefore experienced a big change in the way they had been leading their lives and in the way their future was now laid out for them. They were free from the Europeans. This victory may have caused the rest of the world to see Mexico in a different light or to even realize that the underdog should never be underestimated.
Sophie looked over her work one more time, replaced her quill, and then slid the parchment back to Grayson. "Well? How'd I do?" she asked.

Phew. That took way too long. But thankfully he was finally done. He looked around to spot Professor Domingo going around and viewing everyone else's papers, so he waited for her to make her way towards him. Because he was done too!

Details details.
It was noted that the Professor was going around the room as she usually did while the students did their calculations but admittedly the Gryffindor had been distracted by what the thought might have been a batter of chocolate left on the counter. Who would do such a thing? It was so wasteful. Might as well let her have it.
Er...but more to the point of the lesson and the reducing....
Nine:
Meaning - Endings, tolerance, metamorphasis, cosmic, teaching, global awareness, perfection, power/strength, short-lived, immediacy
Interpretation - This is when the war happened and like....everyone learned that Mexico was a force to be reckoned with...so that could be global awareness as well as power and strength speaking to the Mexican forces that beat the French.
One:
Meaning - Beginning, independence, innovation, leadership
Interpretation - It must have taken some real strong leadership in order for them to beat a country like France when they were thought to be the underdogs but they had that leadership and I'll assume they gained some form of independence from it after.
Five:
Meaning - Change, transition, progressive thinking, resourceful, freedom, versatility, physical world, physical touch
Interpretation - This has Mexico written all over it with the versatility and all that they displayed during the whole fight and resourcefulness must have been a thing too otherwise they'd have crumpled under the French by now. Definitely seeing some change. For once the little guys won.
Mhm, she was done.
Someone needed to teach this child how to write properly. Though this was a magical school, it was still an important skill. She might have to speak to the Headmistress about this. Therefore, she merely pronounced this work, "Acceptable," before she moved on.

Picking up her quill, she scratched it across her parchment. They weren't allowed to work in pairs, right? With a sign she tried to make sense of the numbers that were staring up at her.

Meaning: The way I interpret it is that Mexico had the strength to have won over the French when they should have lost, which was a big surprise to everyone at the time. It was also an ending to that battle, but it was rather short lived due to Mexico City being overtaken.
Meaning: This win was the beginning in a new way of thinking for Mexican people. It gave them confidence and the independence they needed to keep going forth and fighting.
Meaning: This battle changed both how Mexicans saw themselves and how other countries did too. They were strong and could kick serious butt when it came to their freedom. It was a big change.
There. She was done. Re-reading it she checked over her answers. They were descent. Nice. She was going to re-read it just in case.

Then comes the challenge. The blond boy got his notebook, book, and muggle pencil and went down to business. This should be easy, yeah? Yeah.
The 5th of May 1862 was, according to Muggle History is the Battle of Puebla in Mexico City. The battle took an unexpected result with the Mexicans winning, despite their small number against the French. The date of the battle, when reduced, produces the number 9. ‘Endings’ could pertain to the last colonization efforts of a European nation, as well as an ‘Ending’ to the two nations’ conflict. ‘Metamorphosis’ and ‘Global Awareness’ can also be applied as this brings change towards how the world views wars and battles. Who would have thought that such group could win a war? The meaning of ‘Teaching’ can also be applied as this could be a good study in military tactics and such. ‘Cosmic’ is also a relatable meaning to the battle as it showcases 8,000 men versus 4,000 soldiers. With the battle falling on said date, the result could have been theorized as ‘Short-lived’, and this was in fact proven as stated in muggle history books.
5 May
= 5 + 5
= 10

One (1): Beginning, independence, innovation, leadership.
Interpretation:
May 5 or Cinco de Mayo, is celebrated every year to commemorate the victory of the Mexicans against the French. Annually, the new ‘Beginning’ that the war has brought to the Mexican nation is celebrated, so that the present and future generation may never forget what was lost and gained.
Any event that will fall on the fifth may bring change, transition in the physical world or ones self. This can also be applied to objects that bears the number five.
Aaaaaaand done. Do they get to eat now? Hmm?
She had noted this boy's smile when she had made eye contact about his homework. Compliments were another form of magic rarely taught in schools that Lolita had found great use for over the years... But back to his current work. "Excelente, seńor. I appreciate your hard work."

5 May 1862
5 + 5 + 1 + 8 + 6 + 2
= 27
2+7 =9
This number (9) means: Endings, tolerance, metamorphasis, cosmic, teaching, global awareness, perfection, power/strength, short-lived, immediacy.
What does this mean to history: Cinco De Mayo, 5th of May, is a holiday that marks the Battle of Puebla (1862) in Mexico City. It was the French versus the Mexicans. Despite the unreasonable odds set against the Mexicans (the French had a HUGE army), the Mexicans won (HOORAY). After applying the reduction method on this date, we get the number 9 which has to do with endings, tolerance, metamorphasis, cosmics, teaching, global awareness, perfection, power, short-lived, and immediacy. 'Endings' relates to the end of the battle as well as the end of European occupation in Mexico. However, this was short-lived. As France took over the city again but then that occupation was short lived as the Mexicans retaliated to win the day!
5 May
5 + 5
=10
1+ 0 =1
This number (1) means: beginning, independence, innovation, leadership.
What does this mean for history: May 5th when reduced gives us the number one. This number is associated with beginnings, independence, innovation, an leadership. This was the first time Mexico successfully stood up to a European power. It gave a morale boost to the Mexican army and people. 'Beginnings' pertains to the fact that the Mexicans stood up to the Europeans and started to decide to think about becoming their own country hence independence.
5
=5
This number (5) means: Change, transition, progressive thinking, resourceful, freedom, versatility, physical world, physical touch
What does this mean for history: The Mexicans realized that they could actually stand up to the European powers. When reflecting on this date, other people and countries will think about how this nation changed the physical world by separating from European Imperialism.
There we go. Now was that better, Domingo?
Somehow she wasn't surprised that he was going to keep going. This Snake had the work ethic of a Badger. She vaguely wondered at the methods employed to Sort the students. Angel had been double checking the work and it seemed like everything was alright now all she had to do was find meaning for the work and then she was done.
So basically the battle was the ending of an era, it cause global awareness by showing that no matter the size of the army you can't expect victory, it also taught that large numbers can be used against you.
It was the beginning of a new era, the battle also called for great leadership as someone had to take charge and make the small army win and they would have used innovatory methods.
The battle was also part of change and transition as it meant that a small army could defeat an army twice it's size and the commanders were progressive thinkers and they were resourceful in their fight for freedom.
Angel looked at her work and smiled, she kind of liked it and she hoped that it was okay.
Whoops. Hazel remembered the notice about pens and pencils, but she was so used to quills she forgot. Hastily, she reached into her bag and grabbed a pencil. Now, for her interpretations.

5+5=10=>1+0=1
Meaning = independence, originality, innovation
Interpretation = It was the end of a battle, but the beginning of a new time. It took an innovative leader to get their army to win, and it's symbolizing the beginning of a new and better time.
5=5
Meaning = freedom, curiosity, change
Interpretation = The battle caused many things to change, and once everyone was done fighting, it was time for a better era. Nobody thought the Mexicans would win the battle, but in the end, they earned their freedom.

Reduce and analyze...well she sorta remembered the reducing part - just adding all the stuff together, right? - but she didn't have a textbook to help with the analyzing stuff. 'Cause really, after two years of not taking Arithmancy, there was no way she'd still remember all the things each number meant.
But first, just the reducing since that seemed easier.
So assuming she'd done it right...time for analyzing somehow. Maybe she could just guess at it?
Text Cut: Penelope's interpretations
9 - I think I remember this number is the last one in that one number system that goes from 0 to 9 or 1 to 9 (I don't remember exactly), but I guess since it's the "final" one, it could symbolize completion and endings? So the Mexican army was fighting for stuff and wanted to win, and then they did actually win the battle, so they sort of completed what they set out to do. And with endings, there was something about it being the last time any European country invaded the Americas, so obviously that's an ending.
1 - 1 might be the actual first number of that one system, so it could symbolize beginnings? And I guess winning the battle was sort of like a new beginning for the Mexican army and country.
5 - I don't know, all I can think of is that 5 is half of ten and is halfway between 1 and 9, so maybe it symbolizes that? A halfway point? Turning point? And I guess the battle was a sort of turning point for a lot of things that were mentioned.
Meh, that was all she had. Numbers were weird.

Josephina just stood back and watched mostly as her friend took over for a few moments. Not that she wasn't qualified to do so, as she had taught the subject for 10 years but alas she wasn't the Arithmancy professor anymore and if she had taken over that part of the lesson too than why bother having Lolita there anyway? So she just hung back and observed; they seemed to be figuring out the calculations okay which wasn't surprising as these weren't hard calculations but it still delighted her.
"Not all the ovens, but there's some ground beef warming on the stovetop so it maybe gives some heat?" Actually probably gave off virtually none compared to the chills in the castle. "Do you reckon we're trapped in this cold forever? And why?"
She quieted though when Lolita piped up to the class again and scolded them for having quills out. Biting her lip, she waited till the other professor finished before whispering; "Um before they started, didn't you say quills and parchments out? I mean, I know this is muggle studies, but you mentioned both."
Attention back on the students. It seemed a few were still finishing jotting down their notes, so Hadley decided to give them a few more moments to finish their thoughts.

It seemed most of them had finished and at least made an attempt at suitable interpretations, which meant only one thing. Time to continue the lesson. And wrap things up nicely with food.
"Alright, you may put your parchments and pencils way so they don't get messy. We'll be eating soon." Hadley addressed, continuing. "So as many of you mentioned for cuisine, one of the easiest things to make is tacos! It does not require much skill, except for not breaking the taco shell when you're stuffing it." Which was actually why she had soft taco shells too for those who preferred.
"Name one ingredient needed for tacos." It wasn't as if they were rare, unusual ingredients either, so even those with no exposure to the muggle world should know one thing.

All of the sudden and without much warning, Sophie heard the voice of Domingo booming out over the crowd of students. She barely had time to blink, when her quill was suddenly banished from her grip. Wait...whaaaa?! ...but she didn't like pencils! Nor did she even have any! With a frown, she looked around the room. Maybe Mr. Hottie Grayson had an extra pencil she could borrow.
She looked up when Hadley spoke. Oh, well...it looked like it was time to put things away anyway. They were moving on to talking about TACOS! That meant it was almost eating time, which meant there wouldn't be anymore actual assignments. WOOT. So, tacos...
Sophie raised her hand. "You need taco shells," she said. That was important, or else you couldn't hold the whole thing together. WOOT--most IMPORTANT ingredient said by SOPHIE NEWELL.

"GROUND BEEF!" Ethan's hand shot up in the air, and waved it a bit. Ohboyohboy. They are going to eat soon and...TACOOOOS! Yumyum! The Slytherin boy beamed at the professor, seeing that he might have startled the two women up front with his enthusiasm.
Waiting for the others to shout their answer, Ethan stuffed his notebook and muggle pencil inside his satchel. Now his workstation's ready to get messy! Yeyeyeah! The blond boy patiently waited as he twiddled his thumbs together.

TACO MAKING TIME!
Simon slipped his Arithmancy notebook into his bag and waited for Hadley to ask them the question. When she did, he wracked his brain, searching for an answer.
One ingredient that was in tacos.
Hmmm....
Since beef and taco shells had already been mentioned, Simon shot up his hand. "Queso? Cheese, Professor?" he asked. He was pretty sure that cheese was in tacos because all the tacos that he had eaten had cheese in them. But perhaps cheese didn't need to be in tacos. He'd see.

Well, Adi wasn't using a quill. He had purposefully left the stuff out of his bag today but he couldn't help grinning a bit when he saw AJ's quill vanish. Profesosr Domingo's doing, of course.
And there was Hadley speaking again. So it looked like they'd be having tacos. Awesome! Adi raised his hand. "Uhh. Lettuce, Professor.'' Since some of the others had given the main ingredients.

They were going to make tacos! Jasmine's mouth was watering with just the thought of tacos. Another reminder of home and she could not wait. As her classmates started listing ingredients in response to the Professor's question, Jasmine raised her hand. "You need salsa to top off your tacos." Now could they make them already? She was getting hungrier by the minute.

Professor ahead let was asking the class for ingredients to make tacos. Someone needed to pinch Lux, because surely she was dreaming. Raising her hand, she called out, "sour cream."

Acceptable? How come she got acceptable and people were getting high comments in Spanish?? Know what? She didn't wanna know. It was enough that she got it right along with the interpretations and they could be moving on without her having to revisit things because, no, she would not have been making corrections regardless.
Oh, but...
TACOS!
The Gryffindor suddenly seemed to be paying a lot more attention than she had been for the past half an hour or however long it'd been since they got here. She happened to like tacos despite not having them too often and the Professor said the hardest part was not breaking the shell. She supposed she could manage that much. How could she not? It was either she contributed or she wouldn't be getting any for her own eating then she'd been left to sulk.
Don't ask her what went into making tacos, she just knew you needed a mouth to eat them and as it so happened she had one! All good here and waiting for the feast.

The professors now had AJ's full attention because it was food making time. She had called it with the whole taco making thing. Yum. There were so many things that you could put on a taco. She listened to what everybody else was saying so she wouldn't repeat any answers.
Somebody had already said ground beef, but that wasn't the only meat that you could use. "You can also use chicken, professor." She had some that had a salsa type sauce marinated in it, and it was so yummy. Hopefully they would be able to use more than one type of meat.

FOOD the food bit! This was it. This was truly the real reason why he had showed up to class. Well, mostly why. Also Gryffindor. But mostly food. Anyways, right.
He listened to the others shout out some answers, and most of the traditional ingredients had been said so the boy had to think about it for a minute. After a sudden thought, the Gryffindor raised his hand, "Mexican rice?" Some people put rice in their tacos right? At least he was going to. So it was an ingredient for HIS taco.

She quieted though when Lolita piped up to the class again and scolded them for having quills out. Biting her lip, she waited till the other professor finished before whispering; "Um before they started, didn't you say quills and parchments out? I mean, I know this is muggle studies, but you mentioned both."
"Hmm. That may add a small bit of heat after all." But not near as much as the ovens would. "Forever? I certainly hope not. And it seems highly unlikely, anyhow." With a castle full of gifted witches and wizards, it seemed probable that they would finally discover the source any day now.
"Besides, with the upcoming season it's bound to be warmer, yes?" she said evasively. "And Anastasia is perfectly capable of coming up with her own ideas. I doubt she needs mine." The woman was an accomplished witch with an even more accomplished Board of Governors to back her up. Who was Lolita Domingo to barge in on domestic affairs, after all? Surely it was none of her business.
Lolita laughed at Fina's concern about the quills and parchment. "Preocupado much, Love? Loosen up, we must keep them on their toes, see who's really paying attention." Listening carefully and following directions was one point of education, after all.
Angel looked at the Professors and raised her hand. "How about some sort of sauce, maybe tomato or something secret that no one but the owner knows how to make?" Angel wasn't really sure but she thought that would be amazing if it was true, a secret ingredient of some sort.
Beverly put away her belongings quite fast at the mention of eating. It was going to be a reward to her actually understanding the Arithmancy assignment and receiving a compliment from Professor Domingo.
Tacos were a great reward.
She raised her hand. "Hot sauce or salsa?" A little spice never hurt, you know?

Mmmm........tacos.
Layla quickly put her notebook and pen away and sat listening. Wait, they weren't getting them right away? Nope, they had to list off the ingredients first. And honestly, everyone already had them all pretty much. Damn. Except, she didn't think she'd heard one....... "Tomatoes." Yep, couldn't have a taco without those. They added both color and taste and a taco without them was just a sad little ground beef smiley.
