Lucy said:" We have learned what is the Arithmancy and the meaning of some numbers, following the studies of Pythagoras..." |
Jasmine heard the Professor's voice and realized that class was starting. She snapped out of her daze "We learned that Arithmancy originated in ancient Greece and it was started by the Pythagoreans |
Lux smiled weakly at the Professor's greeting and was a little surprised to see Dylan join her. Awww, he was so sweet and she was glad that she had both him and Adi right now. But the class had started, so sadly they couldn't talk. She mouthed to him and Adi that they could talk about it after class and gave him a thankful smile. She could tell him and Adi more very soon, but she really didn't know what exactly was happening; if only there were more details! Raising her hand, she answered the question. "We learned about Pythagoreans, who were Greek and really liked numbers. They used the numbers to predict the future." Or something. She really wasn't sure. |
At least Lux was smiling. Even though it looked...forced? Aww she didn't know? No matter. He'd stay here and keep her company until class was over. And like she signaled to him, they'd talk after class. Adi smiled back at her as Professor Domingo officially started the class. Hand in the air, the Hufflepuff said, "We learnt about the Pythagoreans who used numbers to predict things about themselves and the future.'' |
Sophie had just taken her seat a mere seconds before the door was closed and the lesson was officially started. WHEW. That was close. Hiiii, Professor! That was a mental hello, since doing so now would be while the woman was talking. A summary of the last lesson? Sophie...couldn't remember what the lesson right before this class this very morning had been about. The cold had destroyed her brain cells. Nooo, not really. She just felt like they had. She raised her hand. "We learned about masculine and feminine numbers, what they mean, and what they mean when we put them together. We can learn information about things like marriage and children that way," she said. Whooaaaa. Those two topics seemed way too far away for a fourteen-year-old like Sophie. |
It’s just too cold right now to even answer her question. Yes, his brain was on the verge of freezing. Ethan even donned his snowboarding gear for class today, because, COLD. The Slytherin sniffed and tried his best to recall their previous discussion. All he could think about was the veggie kebab…and the analysis they did with the numbers. MERLIN. Ethan opened his mouth to answer, but his classmates already mentioned his answers. So instead, he kept his mouth shut, opened his notebook, and prepped for new note-worthy Arithmancy stuff. |
Lex was slumped over in her seat waiting for the lesson to begin when she spotted Grayson and the smile he gave her. This being Whitlock and all she couldn't just not return the smile no matter how annoyed she was at the current situation so she forced it and it looked genuine too if you were most people. Really though, tunneling plans, she was willing to head them if people were willing to dig with her. The shout of the Professor drew her attention back from the warm but dark recesses that were the back of her overly active mind. Lex blinked, her eyes coming back into focus. In truth, there was a lot that could be said about what was learned last class and by the sounds of it most was already covered. Most. There was still something being left out and the woman had asked so who was she to not answer. "Kabobs don't actually have anything to do with Arithmancy and Pythag, they're just kind gestures at most and we shouldn't expect them to aid much in our studies." You know, in case there was a kid or two that thought food would help them pass their Arithmancy OWL. They were totally welcome. |
Why Thank You, Flamingo. He will certainly take a seat and try his hardest to pay attention. Nigel would probably get the summary wrong because all he remembered of last class is the name tags and the togas. Especially the nicknames she gave him and Tag. Mr. Hair and Mr. Cheeks. That will never get old. Oh...Right. It was the thing Agatha was giving him looks over. The male and female numbers. Such a weird thing and not something Nigel wants to have a discussion on. Ever again. Well there was one thing he learned last class. Partnering with younger Slytherins was more work than he thought. |
Staying warm? Uh huh! Look at his Slytherin jumper. Warm enough for him to not freeze himself entirely. AND it was green. Perfect! 'I see none of you turned into an icicle, which is something.' SNORT. It was just funny, okay? Slightly funny. He still missed going outside and whatnot and he did think that being secluded was going to drive him insane. OR, drive some of the other people insane. Like Prefect Lex. He saw that smile, by the way. Thank you. No winking because it didn't look like she'd be happy to receive one right now. Not according to this Slytherin. What did he remember from last lesson? Lots. Like the fact that there were kebabs. Yummy, those were. And as the answers came pouring in, Grayson remembered a little bit more of what happened in the previous lesson and something he had put in his homework. So, after gathering up an answer, the boy raised his hand in the air, "Sometimes you had to add or multiply two or more numbers together to get a higher number and whichever path you took could determine the meaning of the number." |
Agatha had NO idea how on EARTH she had ended up sitting next to crazy Nigel again. She couldn't believe it! Maybe it was something odd about this subject that made them end up sitting on the same spot they sat the previous lesson? ....How weird. The young Slytherin had a relatively confused look on her face once professor Domingo started speaking and asked them about last lesson. She still didn't quite know anythign about Arithmancy, to be fair, and the things she could remember were already mentioned. Like boy and girls numbers and their strange meanings. She put her hand up anyway. "When you mix numbers together... multiply or add them, you get new meanings and numbers." Wait, Sophie Newell had already mentioned something like that. Ugh, that girl. Agatha narrowed her eyes at her housemate but quickly flipped her hair as she turned to the teacher again. She was going to pay attention in class this time. Hmph. |
Dylan turned when the professor began speaking. Aww darn, looks like class was starting. Turning back to Lux, he gave her a nod and an assuring smile. He then found himself an empty seat in front of her and Adi next to a Slytherin boy (Ethan) and quickly got his things out for the class as quietly as he could so he wouldn't disturb anyone nearby. He then looked up towards the professor right as she asked them a question. The third year waited his turn, then rose his hand. "We learned about what arithmancy was, and what all the numbers and their meanings were." he answered. |
SPOILER!!: Replies The students had hit most of the important points, so she decided that a highlight of the important points was not needed. "So Pythagoras and his followers were the pioneers of Arithmancy. As with most initial foundations, their work was expanded upon, revised, or completely discarded as more discoveries were made. The notion of gender being associated with number has faded, as Miss Guidry will no doubt approve of." She inclined her head towards the girl. "But the meanings of the numbers themselves have also gone through refinements. If you will turn to page four in your textbook you will find the currently accepted meanings. Those who neglected to bring their textbooks today - most unwisely, might I add - may share with a neighbor." She let them find the page, knowing that if she attempted to move on whilst they looked she would not be heard. After an appropriate pause, she continued. "I would like you to compare the meanings of the numbers 1 through 9 from your textbook with the vibratory influences we decided upon at the end of the last lesson. Take a few minutes to discuss and jot down notes. I will walk around and assist if needed." Then she rolled her eyes. "Though I expect you all to bring your notes to class, I am aware that some of you deem this a trivial idea and as such will provide you with the meanings on the board momentarily. You may begin." She waved her wand and the list of meanings appeared on the board. Text Cut: The Board OOC: You may work with a partner or not, it all depends on what your character prefers. You will have 24-36 hours to complete this first activity. |
It was like she knew he was in the class and forgot to bring anything to class. He usually throws out his notes out after the class and never brings his textbooks. Copying off Mo's notes at the end of the year and remembering as much as he can has worked out well so far and why change success. So...now he will have to see if Agatha had brought her book. He assumed so since she seemed to be one of those trying to be the best at everything she does. Nigel turned to Agatha and asked the question "You brought your textbook to class right?" Once that was taken care of both of them could get to the class activity with the notes, textbook, and whatever it was they were suppose to do. |
The lesson had only just began and it was already starting to make Lux's head hurt. Sighing, she opened her textbook to the right page. It was group work, and Bay wasn't here to be her partner. She wished he was; she missed him and wanted him to be okay. Sadly she looked at her notes that she had written down last lesson. So she had to compare the numbers from the textbook to the numbers from her notes? Maybe that wouldn't be too hard. |
Marigold looked around half-heartedly before opening up her textbook. She was sure that there would be some differences, and sure enough, the first difference was on the number '0.' She leaned over to Hazel's desk and tapped on it. "So, the difference between the two 'zeros' is that the Vibratory zero means reason and the other zero is nothing?" She wasn't that good at this subject. Like, at all. |

SPOILER!!: Marigold, Hazel Once Lolita had put the notes from the previous class on the board, she began to walk amongst the students. Unsurprisingly, Prefect Hair had failed to bring anything from the previous lesson to class. Too bad, she had half been hoping he would wear that toga today. What would the two young Hufflepuffs have for her? "Ah Miss McAlistor, you need only compare the digits one through nine, not zero." And as for Miss Rawthorne's assessment, "But you are quite right that stability counters endings, which are generally indicative of change." |
Angel was going to try her hardest to do the work, she really wanted to show the Professor that she didn't mean anything bad the last lesson, just that she had been really lost with it all. Angel hoped that she could figure this out because it seemed like it would be bad if she couldn't, but at least today she would give it a try. She took out her quill and notebook and then started to work on the thing. SPOILER!!: Angel's work Angel was really confused about the work, she didn't know if she was doing it right, or if she had gone wrong somewhere but at least she had tried which was an improvement on the last time. "Professor, am I doing it right?" Angel raised her hand and hoped that the Professor had seen her. |
Whoops, AJ had missed the first question, but she was totally paying attention. Her mind must have wandered away for a moment. Which really wasn't a good idea in this class since it didn't make much sense to her at all. The first year listened to all of the answers that were given and nodded her head in agreement. Lucky thing she not only had her textbook, but she had her notes from the last lesson also. Comparing what she had with the board, she was pleased to see that she wasn't that far off. Now.. she needed to get busy, but where to start? She wondered for a moment if she should work by herself or with a partner? |
Lucy took her quill and parchement and started her work: Quote:

Jasmine was surprised when Professor Domingo referenced her thoughts on the Pythagoreans. Well alright for Girl Power! Now it was time to put her thinking cap on because the Professor had thrown out the first challenge. Jasmine was concerned because she did not fully grasp the Vibratory Influences so comparing them to the currently accepted number definitions would be......interesting. Jasmine took out her notes from the last class and opened her book to the assigned page. Guess she'd be working alone because her partner in crime wasn't there to work with her. Aaaaaand she was sad again or still. (Insert depressed sigh here). SPOILER!!: Jasmine's notes Whew. Jasmine had gotten a little long winded with her notes. She'd have to be a little more concise with her next seven comparisons or she would not finish before class was over. Looking down at her book, she moved on to number three. |
So all they had to do was a comparison of the two? Adi thought he could manage that solo. He retrieved his textbook along with his notes from the last class from his back and set to work. SPOILER!!: Adi's Notes Now, where was the Professor? Adi needed to know if he had done this right. |
You still have around 24 hours to complete the activity SPOILER!!: Angel Ah, a plea for help. Lolita turned and was surprised to see it coming from none other than the girl who didn't respect Arithmancy. Was it possible that she had changed her attitude? Walking over to the Gryffindor, Lolita scanned her parchment and was mildly impressed. Other than her obvious fascination with the word 'whilst' the work was solid and insightful. However, she was not one to gush encouragement. "Passable," was all she said. Perhaps it would motivate the girl to keep trying, or even to make the two meanings work together. SPOILER!!: Lucy Next up was Miss Petersfield. It didn't take long before it was obvious she had put thought into her work. "Insightful, Miss Petersfield. You have managed to make most of them work together quite nicely." The instructor nodded her approval. SPOILER!!: Jasmine Continuing to patrol the room, she eventually came to Jasmine. She already had quite a lot written down, but it appeared that she had only done a few numbers. "I applaud you for your in depth analysis. However, I don't think you'll have time to finish if you do that for every number. Feel free to spend less time on each if you'd like." It was not a criticism, merely a suggestion. SPOILER!!: Adi Soon she came to a Hufflepuff and looked over his work. "Now that you have listed their meanings next to each other, try to see if you can reconcile the two. Miss Petersfield can help you if you need an example." |
Reconcile? Did the Professor mean link the VI & meanings? To be sure, Adi did a quick peek at Lucy's work. Ah, yes. That was indeed what Domingo had meant. He got to work once more. SPOILER!!: More of Adi's notes Hmmm...now that he had linked the VI and meanings, it was much clearer to Adi that the two did indeed relate a lot. |
The professor agreed with Jasmine's thought to keep things brief so she would make it short and sweet from now on. Looking back and forth between her book and her notes, she tried to come up with some concise comparisons. SPOILER!!: Jasmine's answers Part 2 Jasmine's head felt it was about to explode from analyzing the number meanings. As usual, she wasn't sure whether or not she was anywhere near being on target. She just hoped that some of what she wrote made sense. Putting down her quill, she rubbed her temples and waited for further instructions. |
