It was cold. Really, really cold and the freezing drift outside made whistling noise through the double doors. You should have learned to come prepared, though! Hopefully you read the noticeboard carefully.
Professor Botros was waiting at the double doors that opened up to the grounds outside the castle. He had set up a small seating area with few desks, the boys should learn to allow the girls to take a seat while they pulled themselves together and stood by the wall. There were several boxes scattered around but other than that, there was nothing else. Botros paced the small space, his cane in his right hand and the other one tucked behind his back.

Adi noticed that about three of his classmates' torches had gone out. That got him checking his own. Oops. Had he been paying attention he would have noticed his flame was weak. Quickly he chanted, "kenaz kenaz kenaz... ku ka ki ke ko.. kun kan kin ken kon.. ok ek ik ak uk… kaunnnnnnnnn..." There! He now had a brighter flame.
What was Botros saying? Back to the Castle? Adi heaved a sigh of relief. He really did not fancy staying out here presently. And if he could help with getting them back to the castle faster, then why not? "Ventus!''
There, that could help melt the snow. But he wasn't up for giving piggybacks nor hand holding.

Were they ever going to get to the lake? Cris thought to himself as his teeth chattered, his eyes watered and his nose grew nosicles. The snow was definitely getting thicker that was for sure.
He didn't blame some of the students from complaining. If one wasn't used to the freezing cold, it would definitely be harder for them to adapt to these conditions right now. So it wasn't a surprise to him, when Professor Botros called out and told everyone to return to the castle.
Normally he would have complained....silently....but this time he was in favor. Trudging back to the castle, he checked on the younger kids.
"Does anyone want a piggyback? I have room for one?" Cris offered. Then juggling the runestone, his wand and the torch in one hand and grabbing hold of Jasmine's with the other, he cast the hot air charm to help melt the snow. "Ventus" he called out repeatedly as he made his way back to the castle.

The wind was blowing stronger and the snow was definitely getting heavier. He thought for sure his torch was going to go out, the boy lowering it down closer to himself just in case. Ben's ankles were getting colder as the height of the snow drifts grew higher and soon enough was covering his shoes. If he didn't move them fast enough at least. And if the professor was speaking or asking anymore questions, the third year didn't hear it and he doubted he could have with the whistling and blowing that took the place of any other sound.
Could they stop now?
His silent plea was heard by some kind of god. Professor Botros cancelled the rest of their hike and directed them back towards the castle. With pleasure. "Ventus!" he cast, freeing his feet and allowing a sort burst of path to be cleared as he turned around to head back Still it was trudge work and eventually he came to Angel and AJ and the third year was reminded of the other instructions...helping the younger.

Between the strong winds and the snow that was now reaching to her knees, Lux not only had a hard time walking but a hard time keeping her torch lit. How long would she need to keep chanting before she could stop? It was as if every time her flame started to get stronger, it weakened again.
Mercifully she was sure she could hear the Professor call out something about heading back to the castle and...piggy back rides? Okay, where was her boyfriend? She was so up for him giving her a piggy back ride if possible. Bay had the advantage of being tall while she was short plus he gave the best piggy back rides ever. But if she couldn't find him, it was okay; the snow was affecting her visibility so much that it was hard to see anyone.
Using her wand, Lux melted a path in the snow using that helpful hot air spell that Professor Bentley had taught them. It was way too cold for her to want to hold hands with anyone, and she was way too short to give anyone a piggy back ride. With her size, she was likely to be crushed by even a First Year.

"Need any assistance?"
Angel would have smiled when the Professor said that they were heading back. "I'm so cold." Angel pouted as she shivered because of how cold she was and how bad the snow was, even when the Professor got rid of some of the snow she was still freezing, she was about to pinch her sister when Benny spoke.
"I'm so cold." Angel said through clattering teeth, she wondered if she would give her his jumper after all he was such a gentleman or better still would he give her a piggy back because she was tired. "I'm tired now." Angel pouted as she looked at her sister and Benny.
The snowflakes continue descending on the marching students and their old professor. The freezing breeze is no longer a breeze but a chilling wind that brings MORE snow even. You notice as you walk that the snow level is dangerously increasing under your feet, it's up to your shins, or your knees even if you're young enough.
The cold wind put out a few torches;

"ALRIGHT EVERYONE. Change of plans! Seems like it's a bad night for a stroll down the lake. Hold each other hands and let's get back to the castle! Come on!" Ab grabbed his torch, his wand and his runestone all in one hand and cast a powerful fire spell that illuminated the darkness around them for a second before the upper layer of snow melted under their feet creating a path back to the castle.
"Older students, you can try and melt the snow as we march back up to the castle. It's not a long road, be quick about it! If you can piggyback some younger students, too, that would be so generous. Come come!" The old man hobbled between the students, moving and melting away the thick layers of snow.

What?! Nooo!
Her fire, it was GONE and she was FREEZING. Cold wind blowing her long hair this way and that, Beverly let out a small squeak. This wasn't COOL. Was this supposed to happen? Was the storm wizard-made? Resisting the urge to flail and stomp her foot, Beverly found that there was even more snow falling and collecting on the ground making it hard to walk.
Calm. She was a witch, it wasn't end of the world. Taking a shuddering breath, she began to chant. "Kenaz kenaz kenaz...ku ka ki ke ko...kun kan kin ken kon...ok ek ik ak uk...kaunnnnnnnnn..." Followed by: "Incendio!"
Fire sparked to life in a fierce blaze...and just in time to hear Botros instruct them to go back inside. Yes, YES, SIR. Turning on her heals - well, trying to - she trudged back, casting her wand down at the snow. "Ventus!"
She wasn't going to offer a piggyback ride. She'd melt the snow, but that's about it.
Yeah, yeah, Botros could actually agree with the boy. And so he stood where he was and turned to squint against the snow at the shuddering line of students behind him. Aww, poor small things. "Alright, alright." He sighed and stopped.

When Kace was done answering the question, he heard the other students complain it was too cold. He was shivering and he could agree with them. Then he heard the professor ask them to turn around. Too bad he couldn't go over the question. He really wanted to know. But time to turn back and his fire was still going strong! He was happy. He walked in the line with students and was happy to be going back to the castle. He noticed his flame was going weak with the wind. He chanted the spell again...
"kenaz kenaz kenaz... ku ka ki ke ko.. kun kan kin ken kon.. ok ek ik ak uk… kaunnnnnnnnn..." Then he noticed the flame was stronger.

OHMYGOSH! The cold was starting to get UNBEARABLE. And all the wind was blowing out torches. And that just made things worse. Ugh. Worst. Lesson. Ever. Hopefully this would show the INSANE professors that lessons are meant for the indoors. Especially with this kind of weather. GAH.
At the next announcement, Zander let out a sight of relief. Thank goodness they were actually going to head back in. GLORIOUS NEWS GLORIOUS NEWS! The boy took out his wand and pointed at the ground, "Ventus" Where third years still considered young? Because he could TOTALLY go for a piggy back just about now...

She didn't have to explain, the chattering teeth were noticeable enough even for him. Benny wished he had an extra layer to offer but what he had was only enough to keep him from being in the same predicament and then it would be harder to help further. He did have an idea about the tiredness...the professor had mentioned piggy back rides.
The third year ever so briefly debated if it was manageable. Finally he squatted down beside her, his knees now in the snow making his shiver. "Climb on. I think I can manage us both the rest of the way." Unfortunately AJ was out of luck. One eleven year old was all he could handle.

Angel couldn't believe it when Benny said she could climb on, she slowly climbed onto his back and clung to him, she was feeling a bit better now, she wondered why the Professor didn't get the weather report before they started this walk because if he had this wouldn't have happened.
"Thanks!" Angel smiled at her Cutie-Pie, she was really happy now, she just hoped that AJ was going to be okay on her own down there, because she wasn't sharing her Cutie-Pie and she doubted that he could carry them both, though maybe Adi would help her sister out they were quite friendly.
OI! Remember that cold that could easily be treated with a few charms and extra layers of clothes? What on Earth was THIS?!?! No kidding, Botros. She wasn't as tall as West, if they kept going she could've been buried in the snow by the time they hit the lake. He definitely chose the wrong day to do this... also, what exactly was what he wanted them to do at the lake?
Seems like this question wasn't important enough for her to ask it, though, she'd be losing valuable breath if she did.
And with this cold?? No, thank you.
Hot chocolate sounded very good right now, so with that thought in mind, she cast a hot air charm here and there as she kept on walking. In the right direction, of course, no need to get lost in a weather like this. No. Also, she was having hot chocolate alone because of that reaction to Ascanius' misfortunes. Just saying. Except her bestie, she could join her.
But hey, look Botros, we're helping with the charm and stuff. Probably because she just wanted to get to the Castle quickly.

They were marching and it was... fine. It was freezing cold, but it was fine. Mo sort of wished that Mattie and Dima had been allowed to stay, if only because the marching was fun and a little silly and they couldn't have possibly done any harm here. Might have been a little cold, but that was the price for sneaking into class.
Mo tried to protect his torch from the wind, which was difficult. It seemed like he could either hold it close and use it for warmth, protecting it from the wind, or use it for light and play the game everyone else seemed to be playing. He'd much rather be warm than cool, actually, but Mo was a sport. He held the torch aloft.
You know what is worse than not having the hot air charm blowing on yourself. It is have your only source of heat, the torch, go out while making a path for yourself. This was a disaster and it seemed to have gotten colder to Nigel.
All he wanted to do right now was be in the castle. Probably repeating himself at this point. Though he guessed he could just imagine Scan's pants on fire again and just keep on walking.
It was an idea.

They were meant to be melting snow and carrying the ickles, and Mo couldn't even keep his torch lit. His eyes swept the group nearest to him, and, not spotting anyone immediately, he turned his attention back to the torch. "Kenaz kenaz kenaz...ku ka ki ke ko...kun kan kin ken kon...ok ek ik ak uk...kaunnnnnnnnn..." He watched the rune light up all the way again, and then Mo list the torch.
Again.
"Incendio." Now then... who needed a ride? "Anyone want a piggy back?" He cast at the ground at his feet, although it didn't do him a whole lot of good, considering those ahead of them had already done most of the clearing.

Brrrrrr!
This cold was freaking ridiculous. Grayson had to use every ounce of energy within him to try and trudge on. He still refused to hold hands with anybody and he refused to give anyone a piggyback ride. Or. Well. If anyone did want a piggyback ride, all they needed to do was ask. And ViP personnel only, thank you. No weird ones that would suddenly start calling him a donkey.
"Ventus!" he called, his wand pointed at the snow a little ahead of his feet. The path he was melting out was a little shaky because his hands were currently shaking but the boy didn't care. No care whatsoever in his bones. What he did care about was getting up to that castle where, here's hoping, Botros would say that they can go back to their dorms. Which he woulddo, of course, right after he made a detour to the kitchens for some hot chocolate.
Sniffling, Grayson cast the spell again....... and again........ and again. As many times as it took. The light of his flame flickered but his level of care was still standing at a firm zero percent. Or two percent seeing as, after taking a deep, shudders breath, the Slytherin started chanting again. "Kenaz kenaz kenaz... ku ka ki ke ko.. kun kan kin ken kon.. ok ek ik ak uk… kaunnnnnnnnn..." Only out of the goodness of his heart. And because he REALLY didn't want his main source of light and heat to die away. Not when the castle seemed to be oh-so-far away.
And he was going to get a cold from this, if he wasn't careful.
Alright they were probably almost back to the castle by now. His legs were becoming numb. He needed to get them warmed up and fast. He was glad he had gloves on. He heard the third years close to his age use a charm to clear the ice. He got his wand out of his robes and said, "Ventus!" and then the path was clear. He grinned and now his feet won't be so sore with coldness.
Now since he was taller, he could offer piggy back rides. But then he noticed his fire was getting dimmer. He shrugged and did the chant yet again. He better fix it. He began chanting yet again, "Kenaz kenaz kenaz... ku ka ki ke ko.. kun kan kin ken kon.. ok ek ik ak uk… kaunnnnnnnnn..." Then he got his rune all lit up.
He saw Lux piggy back ride less. He smirked and offered to the little puff. "Lux how would you like a piggy back ride?" he asked one of his friends.

AJ looked crazily at her sister. "No way." She was cold too, and wasn't going to be taking off any layers. Those puppy dog eyes might work on her father, but they wouldn't be working on her. Finally they were going to head back to the castle? As much as she was glad to hear these magical words she couldn't help but wonder what the whole point was in the first place.
The professor mentioned piggyback rides and that made her ears perk up. Before she knew it Benny was there offering Angel a ride. Did this mean that they were back on speaking terms? AJ shot her sister a smile that said so much that she was sure Angel would get.
The first year heard somebody offering a piggyback ride, and she was so not passing that up. Looking to see who the voice belonged to, she was glad to see it was Cris. At least she wouldn't have to ride on a complete stranger's back... not that she wouldn't or anything. "Hey Cris! Can I hop on?"

The trail that Lux was making in the snow was pretty good if she said so herself. Though it was still hard for her to walk and the wind made her feel that she might blow over. Small Puff walking here.
When Kace offered to give her a ride, it was so sweet. Of course she would agree to it. "Thank you so much." Bay wasn't anywhere that she could see, and Lux knew he wouldn't mind this in the least. He gave her loads of piggy back rides.
A lit torch while on someone's back wasn't a bright idea, so she made sure to extinguish hers before climbing on Kace's back. "Want me to keep making the hot air? Because I totally can do that."

Oh, NOW Botros came to his senses? GOOD! Caleb was ready to head back to the castle! He was sure he would have been able to last longer, but the other students probably couldn't. They didn't have Caleb's skills and all. Botros would NOT be very keen to have any of them freeze to death, he was sure.
"Come on, follow me!" Caleb called to some of the younger students as he trudged forward. HIS torch was still lit, so he could melt some of the snow with it and move them forward, which was just what he did.

No takers. Mo wasn't that disappointed, since the ground was soggy and slippery, and he drew his torch back in close for the warmth. They were almost back to the castle, right? RIGHT?
He kept a level eye on his rune this time, making sure that it stayed lit, and that his torch stayed lit by extension. No random puff of wind was going to put it out this time, especially because Mo was getting too cold to relight the torch again.
Are you for real??? Her torch was out. Out of the race, clearly, because it wouldn't make it to the Castle anymore. Not lit, anyway. Yeah, that's right, Lottie didn't even to light it up again. The light emanating from the others' was more than enough, and she knew the way very well, even in the snow.
Hogwarts' Castle was, like, right there.
No one was getting lost because one torch decided to die on her. Nope.
Almost. Lottie almost said 'Me' to Marcus Branxton, just to see if he'd comply or not... but the effort to actually move towards him was too much and she'd rather keep on walking, thank you. Plus, exercise = energy = heat. Logic.
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
They didn't get very far before the wind decided to have a mind of its own and extinguish some of the flames. It made her just kinda eye her own fire, daring it to go out when they were in the middle of a heating crisis. Sure she could re-light but what would happen in that time she took to cast the spell again? Her fingers could possibly freeze right off and there would be no one tangible to blame.
A couple more steps and her fire was starting to flicker the way it did when she'd first stepped outside. Not very strong at all and not something she was willing to continue chancing so...chanting would have to happen.
"kenaz kenaz kenaz... ku ka ki ke ko.. kun kan kin ken kon.. ok ek ik ak uk… kaunnnnnnnnn..."
The rune on her torch began glowing and she could see a new strength pouring into the fire. THAT was more like it. This could almost classify as a lesson on survival, like, how to not freeze to death. Lottie was doing a good job of this not freezing thing too from what she could gather. All was good--heading back? But they hadn't actually gotten to the lake yet...had they?
She didn't think they did. Alright. Who complained?

Cutty seized the opportunity to follow behind the leggy Ravenclaw prefect. Barrington made a fine shield against the cold and the rapidly rising snow level. Again, though the height of the piled snow got the better of him and he was soon slowed down enough that it didn't matter who he was following. Cutty made a monosyllabic sound of frustration and pushed the snow in front of him attempting to plow through. He saw everyone using the hot air spell to clear their way and gave it a go. "Ventus! Ventus!" Slowly, he began to free himself from the constipated pathway.
He'd cleared a way toward the front and with noone ahead of him and a healthy dose of lack-patience, he threw a fire spell at the walk way in front of him. "Incendio!" Hotter than Ventus, but with the drawback that the watery melted ice quickly froze over and caused the ground to be quite slippery. Watch your step if you chose to follow behind him, the selfish serpent wasn't likely to stop and help you if you should fall. He did at least give a small warning, "Don't fall." as he found it easier to gain upon the castle doors. He ceased the fire spell and returned to Ventus as he drew up to the castle where the snow was a bit thinner.
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
Waaaiiittttt, turning back and offering piggy back rides? Did she look like a mule? Didn't think so, no offers here. Besides, there weren't that many little ones and they were doing a brilliant job of keeping up on their own. Far be it for her to be the condescending Prefect telling them their legs were too short to carry them through the snow at an acceptable pace so, yeah, everyone walk on your own two feet, yeah? Great.
Lex paused her chanting after making sure her fire was still doing a decent job--and really it had to be because apparently she'd be casting a different spell now so no chanting? Okay. It didn't look like she was in danger of it going on and even if, the hot air charm should help.
"Ventus!" Clearing a path, like they were meant to be doing to help the little ones with their short feet. This, she was fine with helping with. Everything else was questionable and she would need to be told how many chocolate frogs were in it for her. None? Pity.
"Ventus." And she might have been casting at herself too. The ground might appreciate the heat, sure, but she could guarantee she'd enjoy it more. Nothing personal ground, it all went back to survival. How were they not back at the castle yet?

Okay bay didn't like this one bit.. His bottom was hurting and it was freezing, all he wanted was his bed.. Teeth chattering away in his mouth he barely see anyone but only little flames from there torches...
Oh no..
It seems that the storm is getting worse because the wind picked up and some of the lights instantly went away and he was pretty sure he heard some screams over the crazy wind.
He thought he heard the professor say something but he just could hear... But he saw other older students melting the path to go.... Back? He yelled out "OI ARE WE GOING BACK?? " he wondered if anyone could hear him....
