It was cold. Really, really cold and the freezing drift outside made whistling noise through the double doors. You should have learned to come prepared, though! Hopefully you read the noticeboard carefully.
Professor Botros was waiting at the double doors that opened up to the grounds outside the castle. He had set up a small seating area with few desks, the boys should learn to allow the girls to take a seat while they pulled themselves together and stood by the wall. There were several boxes scattered around but other than that, there was nothing else. Botros paced the small space, his cane in his right hand and the other one tucked behind his back.
ooc: - lesson has STARTED.
- Again, this isn't the first Ancient Runes lesson this term, ic. So your student should have the basics figured out already. If you need any help, you can always poke me in a PM. :3
- Make sure you read my post above, and the rules and guidelines for this lesson before you post!

The whining had been annoying, by the way. Not that Maddie had voiced as much. Best not to give away what made you annoyed lest the person doing the annoying used it against you in the future. PLUS as Dima's ally, Maddie had to make sure the boy didn't freeze to death and so yeah, she begrudgingly headed inside. She was just dusting the snowflakes from her hair when she sensed the first year in front of her stop short. What was he--
Oh. OH. WELP.
After a brief discussion and a bit of weighing her options, Maddie DID follow Dima. Crawling on all fours wasn't exactly lady like but it wasn't like her mom NEEDED to know about this and besides, she DID find runes fascinating. Dead confusing, SURE, but fascinating TOO.
When they were safely hidden behind the legs of some older boys, the small brunette gave her friend a look that screamed, 'NOW WHAT?'

Whoooaaahahaha. Such an enthusiastic ball this one, wasn't he? Botros smiled widely at the Slytherin kid. So considerate of him to remind the old professor of his name, too! Ab should make this a rule for every lesson.
"Sure, he'd love that!" He answered about the Crup, and watched the boy do a nifty charm to warm himself up. Aww poor thing, they were getting heat in a few alright.
"Indeed." Ab gave the seventh year a broad smile, suspecting that Odessa had already guessed which rune they were going to study today.
The prefect had the right to be bothered. "My knees would agree with you, Mr. Barrington." They were bothered alright.
"Hello AJ, nice to see you here again." He greeted the young girl, so kind of her to remind him of her name too.
Aaaah, she suspected something, too, hadn't she? Botros gave her the same broad grin he shared with Odessa. "Isn't it?"
"Evening, son. I'm great, thank you, hope you're well too." The polite Slytherin boy got a gentle shoulder pat as he passed the professor.
"I am, thank you." He gave the little girl a small smile as she walked over to sit down as well. The majority seemed to prefer standing by the wall. Interesting.
"Hello, dear. I'm great, thank you." He offered the Gryffindor a polite smile.
"Good evening, Ms. Petersfield." He gave the first year kid a gentle pat on the head when she passed him.
Now that the majority of class were here, Botros decided it was time to start this lesson. It was quite late already. Clearing his throat and giving the stony floor quite few clicks with his cane to get the attention of everyone, Ab started in a loud and clear voice.
"Today, we're going to focus on one rune. We're talking about the Elder Futhark alphabet as usual." He stood, his back to the double-doors, and leaned both his hands on his cane. "Which rune do you think we're going to explore thoroughly tonight? Take our surroundings in consideration before you answer. Only mention the name of the rune." He eyed some smartypants, he didn't want them to do the explaining for him.
ooc: - class is officially started, anyone who arrives after this post will be considered late and is subject to point deduction.

Melek looked around and then at the professor. She thought about his question and tried to think about what rune he could be talking about. Mel was debating between two: thurisar and isa. Melek tapped her cheek, still debating between the two. She was trying to be better at runes and she looked around at the other kids. Mel shyly rose her hand, "Professor, sir, could it possibly be isa?" Melek was unsure so she looked away, blushing madly. She hated feeling stupid.

Emmylou nodded to the professor and looked around at her surroundings. She still knew very little about Runes but she knew a few so maybe if she just thought hard enough then she would be able to at the very least take a guess. Emmylou was still confused by the face that it was night time and she had to be in class but she did have more energy to focus on the class more than in a morning class. "Isa?" It had to be isa, she shouldn't have even questioned herself about it.

It was good that Professor Botros was doing well, though Lux was honestly not sure how when it was so cold. Even with her layers, she still felt it. Maybe she should have came more prepared. But then how many layers should one need in a classroom?
Raising her hand, she echoed the answer that everyone else had given: "Isa."

Hmmm.
Bliss considered all of her surroundings. Cold.
Everywhere was cold. She had been beginning to wonder why it was so cold, but now she knew why. The answer came to her easily and she raised her hand. "The rune's Isa, sir," she said confidently, with a smile. Ancient Runes was, without a doubt, one of her favourite subjects, so she ought to know this stuff. She'd been studying so hard, there were now only few things that she didn't know. Professor Botros would be proud.
Mr. Unicorn: Kim's daughter: Jenn's sister : MILKSHAKES: Lita Daley: The Sun: Its so Fluffy!
People needed to stop. Particular people. Both of them. FACES were made too. Yes they were. Upset unicorn was upset.
Anyway, as to Botros' question, Tag felt like giving an answer, but then afterwards, hearing almost all the present students give out the same rune, what was the point? Right. Everyone seemed to agree that it was Isa because it was connected with ice but if that were true or not, they would find out. He wouldn't say it but Tag would just go along with everyone elses answers.
See if any of the other students had different ideas, and then listen to what Botros had to say about it all.
Also, Tag hoped this class wouldn't be too hard today. After the last lesson from last year Tag had felt his work had weakened because of the activity they had done in class, and learnt that entire year. So, crossing fingers to hoping this wouldn't be a hard class today.

Cris was just wondering when class would start, the good Professoe began to speak asking everyone what rune they'd be possibly working with today.
Considering it was frigid cold in here, Cris' first thoughts were that it would possibly be Isa, the rune that represented Isa. A rune which must of his fellow classmates agreed upon as well. Raising his hand, Cris gave his answer.
"Professor it is frigid cold here, so will we be studying about Kenaz?" it being the rune that represented fire and warmth.

He was still wearing a scowl. Cutty was uncomfortably cold and he'd had to reschedule everything on his trouble-making list of to-do in order to be there. Through chattering teeth, he pointed his wand toward the inside of his robes and said, "V'v'ventus!" to try and get the hot air circulating through his robes. Relief washed over him as he was, indeed, warmed by this gesture enabling him to pay more heed the question that the old wizard was asking.
He had gotten something of a wolf-in-sheep-clothing vibe from Botros since the fiasco of last year. Yes. Suck everyone's youth, even if only temporarily and make it looks like an accident. Yes. Yes. That's what Cutty would've done were he in Botros's shoes. It caused the boy great admiration and wariness for his Professor. So what did that mean? Did it mean he'd be going with a Rune whose meaning could be closer to their current situation or something more sadistic like, "Sowilo." Cutty spoke after raising up his hand.
Angel smiled at the Professor as she raised her hand. "Is it Isa that we are studying today?" Angel wasn't really sure but well that was the runes for cold and for old and very warn out places though basically they were all old so maybe that wasn't right, but she wasn't changing her answer now.
Lucy said: Professor.. Really at the moment I didn't study the elphic language yet! Adi caught Kevin rolling his eyes at him but he wondered if the boy was seriously considering going to take a seat. The Hufflepuff wouldn't put it past him. At that moment, Professor Botros tapped the floor with his cane.
Well, the only Rune that came to Adi that would fit in with their surroundings had to do with ice. "Isa,'' he said his hand in the air. He was still trying to figure out if any other rune would fit jjust in case he was wrong.

With all the cold around them, Layla was inclined to think that the rune they were studying had something to do with cold. But then again, they could be studying the opposite. Which, of course, would be warmth. Hopefully one that would warm this place up, because the whole coldness thing was getting on her last nerve, even though she was all bundled up.
With that thought in mind, Layla gave her answer. "Kenaz?" Please?

And class had started!
Simon pulled out his notebook and began taking notes. The Elder Futhark alphabet? Now that was a funny name. He wondered who had come up with such a quirky name for it. Hmmm. He refocused and listened to the Professor's question. Which rune were we going to focus on this evening? Simon blinked. He had absolutely no clue. He decided to remain silent and listen to other answers.
See, there was a new Ascanius in town. Only not exactly, because Grayson was quite the talker, you know? And veeeery inquisitive about things that didn't even matter. But he was cool, she liked him. Instead of Jon, her best friend should date someone like Grayson. Either way, she smiled back at him and noticed the smirk was going to...
...her boyfriend. Hi! Her eyes immediately on him and her smile immediately widened. Except... well, his face suggested he was annoyed at something? Was there something wrong?
Botros was speaking and, well, Lottie raised her hand only to be acknowledged, but West had been the first to answer the question even before Botros had asked it. "Yes, of course, Isa." She agreed with everyone.

Zander was still FREEZING, though Ethan was helping with that bit. But it was still cold. So yeah. Anyways. Learning about one rune? Yes, that sounds lovely. Because all the multiple rune stuff is SUPER confusing. So Zander would do anything just to focus on ones. As for the specific one they were going to learn about? Zander had no clue.
He heard most of the answers given as "Isa" and Zander wanted to repeat it since they were in this FREEZING COLD WEATHER. But instead he went for a more hopeful choice, "Sowilo?" Because that is the rune associated with sun. And sun is all Zander wants right now. Sun and lots of sun. To melt this wretched cold winter.

Gareth let out a chuckle. Was not that cute? Apparently pretty face was cold since she let out this freezing air out of herself. Cold pretty face. Displeased pretty face. Gary supposed he knew what would please her though. He ignored the fact that the class had started and whispered his answer to her question. "Depends."
Oh...he seriously didn't care right now what rune the class was going to be about. Right now, he was more interested in this girl. No guesses for the rune. Nope. When finally the old man professor announce the name of the rune, he would probably join in...if the magic of the rune interested him. Silently, he stood up a tiny bit and scooted his seat close to Beverly's until there was no space between them an sat down. Now he was right next to her.
*smirk*
Depends.
Beverly shot him a scowl and whispered lowly. "We should try out this 'depends' but for now lesson has started." So shut up, and if he decided to keep talking she'd ignore him.
What--no! Stupid Head was invading HER personal bubble. Beverly Wayne wanted to punch him, she DID. She doubted Professor Botros would let that slide, though. UGH. With a glare his way, she quietly scooted away.

Turning her attention toward Professor Botros, Beverly did her best to clear her face of the scowl. She was NOT a pleased Slytherin at the moment. Either way, she raised her hand to answer the question.
"Isa," she simply said. The rune of ice. It was that one or maybe even Thurisaz, since that one had something to do with ice giants, but Isa was her best bet.

Isa? Really? Because people wanted more ice and cold? And West wasn't quite sold on Kenaz. Sure they could make some fire and warm up... but the torch rune didn't quite seem the one that made the most sense to him. He stood there keeping his mouth shut for some time and then when Cutty, and some little Gryffindor said Sowilo, West nodded. That was exactly his thinking.
"I agree with Sowilo, sir." He said, hand half-up. Well y'know, just why not back those other kids up? "Though I suppose an alternative would be Nauthiz..." Out of the box, y'know. And because survival and endurance would be useful in extreme cold, if you couldn't change it or weren't inclined to do so.

Bliss and listened to other people's answer and she realised she probably shouldn't have been as confident as she had been. Everyone else's suggestion seemed sensible and probably more helpful than Isa. Cold and a rune that makes it cold? She shouldn't have thought it through more. It was likely to be the reserve rune, to make it make it warmer again, not colder. Stupid.
Never mind, it hardly mattered now.
She just sat and waited to find out what rune it was.
Now that the majority of class were here, Botros decided it was time to start this lesson. It was quite late already. Clearing his throat and giving the stony floor quite few clicks with his cane to get the attention of everyone, Ab started in a loud and clear voice.

Leah tried not to slap herself trying to remember what Futhark alphabets are. She still looked around at the surroundings to find an answer or something to the professor's question. It was cold. There was nothing else to it. Why were they in this cold place anyway?
The second year had her mouth shut and looked around for other answers. Isa? Sowilo? What?

Ehaha. Marigold was already behind. She dug a scrap parchment out of her pocket and glanced at it. A cheat-sheet, if you will, because she honestly didn't get this class. "Uhh.. hopefully sowilo? Because the sun can generate heat?" Yeah. Probably wrong, but y'know.
By the time the Professor started speaking- Noel's teeth were chattering. And he was trying to control it. Noel didn't know the answer to his question or maybe he just wasn't listening closely but apparently everyone else did.
Listening to everyone repeat Isa. Noel simply nodded along. Cause you know yeah yeah .. it had to be Isa because everyone kept saying it.
Isa for the win!

Ethan was a popular kid, wasn't he? Or was it the heat?
Regardless, Grayson was taking full advantage of standing next to the boy. Waves and smiles were given over to Cris and a smirk over towards Ethan, who really was quite a popular kid. Jeez. It was going to turn into a party in here, you know.
Of course, winks were returned to Lotus Wisteria, as well as smirks over towards a certain Sassy Loony. Jealous, are we?
His attention was then occupied by the clearing of a throat and his blue eyes settled on Botros. Er. Runes? Oh man, he really should have sat down and tried to memorise them, shouldn't he? He knew some but there were just so many! How was he meant to know all off them from the top of his head? Thinking that the surroundings will give him a clue, the Slytherin looked around him instead, only to be severely disappointed. There were desks. And quite a few people seemed to be standing. Aside from that, he couldn't put his finger on what part of the surroundings were meant to be giving him a clue on what they were going to be learning about.
Apart from the freaking cold.
He was going to go with that. Uh huh. Raising his hand in the air, Grayson said, "Well it's frea-- freezing in here and there's a rune that's linked with ice. I........... sa? Yeah, that! I think we're learning about that one." Yes. Brilliant.
This wasn't going to be a class filled with boring lectures, was it?

Ah, finally class was starting. Well it might be Kenaz. That would be interesting. With all the cold around them learning about fire. But Nigel was going to go with the obvious answer that Grayson gave. It was probably Isa.
"Isa"
Just thinking about it made him cold.

Now which rune was that? "Isa," she suggested, raising her hand. That was all she said about that, since he'd suggested they list the name and nothing but the name.

Botros was speaking and, well, Lottie raised her hand only to be acknowledged, but West had been the first to answer the question even before Botros had asked it. "Yes, of course, Isa." She agreed with everyone.

"Isa," she simply said. The rune of ice. It was that one or maybe even Thurisaz, since that one had something to do with ice giants, but Isa was her best bet.
"Isa, the rune of ice and cruel coldness, is the most obvious rune to choose." He stated, with a sly grin that made his wrinkles stand out on his gentle face. "But no, we will not be learning about Isa this time. It's already freezing in here like most of the smart ones pointed out, so teaching you about Isa and having to chant Isa spells would simply kill us all." He chuckled. "Not Isa, but nice try."

Sowilo was an interesting choice. Botros rubbed his chin, thoughtfully, and made a 'hmm' sound before he spoke. "Sowilo is the rune of the sun. Technically, it is the counter-force to Isa, and it represents the force of fire in the physical and mental sense of the word." It made sense that some students chose this rune. "You're very close. We are going to learn about a rune associated with fire, but Sowilo is not what we're going for tonight. The fire in Sowilo is untamed, it is wild and strong." Too much for what they were going to do.

Cross his legs, mocking the way most girls sat and put a hand on his knees. But he didn't do this because one he would just look stupid as a MAN and second, he didn't want the class laughing or yelling at him like they had done in Potions.
So he stayed near the wall when the Professor began to talk. He looked around at his surroundings and .....nothing came up ...well, of course he knew the names of a few runes but their meanings and powers were something that went in one ear and out of the other immediately. "Raidho?" probably not but whatever.
.... why? "No." Botros shook his head gently at the boy.

It was really hard to do so, though, in the cold. Hmm... cold? Well, if certain runes needed an environment to work, an ice rune of some sort would be perfect in this condition. But at the same time, how would they know if they've done it right? Ice runes would give off some sort of cold feeling, and if they were already cold, then they wouldn't be able to tell. So maybe the opposite? A heating rune perhaps? Something that would give off heat? Merlin's beard, I hope so. He thought.
He raised his hand, and waited to be called on. "Professor, would it be some sort of heating rune? I'm not sure what the name is, sorry." But he was almost sure that there was one out there. There had to be.
"You're on the right track of thinking, yes, very good." But WHICH heating rune, hmm? HMM? Heh heh.

The rune talk SOUNDED interesting, though. Plus the desks were blocking his way in, and he wasn't keen on searching around the castle for another entrance. So after exchanging hushed whispers with his friend, Dima got on all fours and began crawling around the boxes scattered everywhere. He tried to stay unnoticed and not disrupt the progressing class, finally reaching the wall where some boys stood. The professor wouldn't MIND, right?
Was Maddie coming or?

Lesson is now on!
And first question’s up. No need to look at their situation, all right? Their layers of clothing says it all. It has something to do with the cold. But as the third year deduced, they wouldn’t be producing more cold because that would be just illogical, yes? Ethan gave the older Ravenclaw a glance before he put his hand up. Older dude might be right. “Professor? Are we going to learn about the ‘Kenaz’?” Oh wait, was it 'Kenat'? The rune of fire if Ethan remembers it correctly. He’d seen Mordred’s list of Elder Futhark plastered on his dorm’s wall when he visited him last summer. He’s studying dragons now you see, and he’s taking up Ancient Runes still to further understand the creature.

"Professor it is frigid cold here, so will we be studying about Kenaz?" it being the rune that represented fire and warmth.

With that thought in mind, Layla gave her answer. "Kenaz?" Please?
Botros snapped his fingers, pleased with the three students. "Exactly! We are going to learn about Kenaz today. It is the rune of fire, fire in the sense of illumination and warmth. It represents the tamed fire, the one that doesn't cause destruction or blindness. We're going to need that today."
Botros bent to one of the boxes and produced a wooden torch with the rune Kenaz carved excessively on the top. He held it high in the air for everybody to see. "First, take our the runestone of Kenaz from your runestone set. Place the stone in your palm then grab your wand with that same hand, so that the runestone and the wand are in the same hand on top of each other." Botros demonstrated for them. "We're going to chant the Galdr for Kenaz, next, to invoke the strength and power of the runes on the torch.
"kenaz kenaz kenaz... ku ka ki ke ko.. kun kan kin ken kon.. ok ek ik ak uk... kaunnnnnnnnn" The runes carved on Botros' torch started to glow.
"Do the same. Someone pass over torches, please." He eyeballed the Prefects, specially. "Any questions, raise your hand."

Well that did bring a huge amount of relief to the boy. Ethan was starting to get worried that they will induce more cold tonight based on the majority of the class’ answer. Merlin, he’d choose any Rune over ‘Isa’ right now. The Slytherin gave Botros a pleased nod in return as he acknowledged him, Cris and another Slytherin.
After the professor’s demonstration, he got his rune set with difficulty and procured the Kenaz rune. He eyed the rune in his hand as he waited for the torches to be passed around.
WHOA WAIT.
They're going to the lake? At this hour?? Ethan gaped once more and turned to Cutty who was obviously now in a bad mood because of the cold. And going outside will just upset his fellow Snake some more. The Slytherin eyed the boy and gestured Cutty to stand next to him. He will have to watch out for his buddy. Oh and Simon too! Merlin. Those boys need to get used to the cold.
Now…where is that torch?

Ken-what now?
Lex blinked. Focusing on the Professor again as he seemed to be starting the lesson proper now. They were learning about Kenaz? That kinda made sense in all this cold. No need to move them closer to freezing to death with cold runes when there was one that would help them with the nice toasty fire....that they'd be carrying across the ground too because why not. She was up for a night trip to the lake. It was ridiculously cold outside but they would have torches and resemble an angry muggle mob. Cool huh?
Lex nicked the kenaz rune stone from her rune kit and held it in the same hand as her wand, pressing them together just a little in her grip.
They were going to be chanting. Right. Yes. "kenaz kenaz kenaz... ku ka ki ke ko.. kun kan kin ken kon.. ok ek ik ak uk... kaunnnnnnnnn." Lex chanted as she moved over to torches and grabbed one....then passed it on to the person closest to her. She reached for a few torches actually and handed them to those who wanted, despite her having sworn off of helping in Botros' class. Casually she handed Dima a torch too. "Don't be so suspicious, pretend you belong here." And this last torch she would be keeping for herself as she continued chanting and watching the rune glow on it. "kenaz kenaz kenaz... ku ka ki ke ko.. kun kan kin ken kon.. ok ek ik ak uk... kaunnnnnnnnn."

Cris heaved a sigh of relief when Professor Botros confirmed that along with Ethan and another Slytherin, his answer had been correct. In fact, he was than happy because that meant that everyone, he included, would soon be feeling nice and warm.
He listened intently as Professor Botros explained what they would be doing for their lesson today and once he was done, Cris sat there in his seat flabbergasted.
But wait! What? They were going outdoors and down to the lake. Don't get him wrong, he loved the lake, but it was freezing cold right now. Cris hoped that they got to make a nice big fire!!
Trusting that the Professor knew what he was doing, Cris reached into his rune set and picked up the stone with the rune Kenaz carved on it and placed it the palm of his wand hand. Then he unholstered his wand and held it so that both the rune stone and his wand were touching.
Okay now to chant the Galdr but he'd wait until he had a torch in his hand.
