As usual Transfiguration is one of the first lesson for the day. It was bright and early in the morning, when the air was still quite crisp and cool and dew was still on the grass. The classroom door is wide open and as usual the classroom is spotless and there is the slight smell of a coconut aroma in the air. The desks and chairs are in perfect order and there might even be a slight gleam to them. Yep immaculate. There was a difference though, there were a few plants in the room, actually more than a few in the corners and the professor wasn't in her usual office looking attire. There is also a large pile of wood to the front corner as while as a pile of vines next to it.
You know the routine, come in and take your place at a seat. New comers, if you don't know what to do look and learn.

Now she could... practice the wand movements, yeah? Which Bellaire had said was just a tap for the wood and a point for the vines. Alice found herself wondering what nature of a spell could make fancy movements unnecessary as she inspected the materials on her desk. Did she even need to practice this part? They were pretty simple movements.
... but nope. No. There was a process.
So she halted her twirly wand hand and started doing the movements for the spells, though the seventh year remained silent. No actual spell casting yet. But once she'd pointed at the bit of vine as many times as one could before you went mental and tapped the wood enough to make it seem like she was denting it with her wand, Alice decided she could move on.

...a boat. Right. That was not at all what had been going on in Adrienne's mind (why would you need a boat in the jungle?), but it was still a cool pair of spells. And though she'd been wrong about the fungus part, she'd been right about the vine part, though admittedly that was fairly obvious. She'd just gotten up to get some wood and vine when Professor Bellaire decided it was a good idea to just leave a class full of students to their own devices. She shrugged and grabbed some materials, then headed back to her desk next to Tora and the girl she'd greeted but never learned the name of.
Wand at the ready, Adrienne tapped her piece of wood and said the incantation. "Lignam Navicula!" To her chagrin, nothing whatsoever seemed to have happened. Was she pronouncing it right? "Lig-nam Nav-ic-u-la," she said more slowly, again with no visible effect. "Lignam Navicula," she tried again, saying it a bit differently. The piece of wood looked like it was shifting slightly for a moment, and there was a definite indent in the middle, but there was no way this would pass as a boat under any circumstances. A fourth and fifth try did nothing except make Adrienne steadily more and more annoyed.

It didn't help when she looked over to see Tora already having transfigured her boat perfectly. Adrienne slammed her wand down onto the table with a frustrated huff. "How in the name of Merlin are you managing to do that?!"

So they were learning how to survive in the wilderness. More accurately, the jungle, but seeing as there was a lack of real jungles in Scotland, Lily was choosing to just look at it as the wilderness. She’d been quiet for most of the discussion, more because she hadn’t seen why it was necessary to transfigure vines into ropes than anything else. They were already awfully rope-like to her, but it was still an interesting spell. The boat one was even better, since that was something she could actually use. Driftwood at the beach could be transfigured into a boat for some fun on the water. She just had to get the spell mastered first, and probably the vine one just because it was part of the lesson, so she’d gone up with the rest of the class to collect a piece of wood and a vine. Odds were they’d end up using both spells sooner or later, anyway, for a final project or something, so she’d push aside her feelings about the one for academics sake.
At least the wand movements were simple. She would have expected at least the boat one to be more complex, but the incantations were complicated enough as it was. If she hadn’t had practice with Latin from her father coming up with charms off and on since she’d been able to pay attention. She wasn’t about to think that meant she didn’t need to practice, though. “Vinea Funiculus, Vinea Funiculus, Vinea Funiculus,” she repeated softly, eyeing the vine as if she expected it to transfigure just with the words. It was just visualization, however, and she knew that the wand movement was actually needed for the spell. She just wasn’t going to put the two together yet. First she wanted to get the pronunciations correct, so soon enough, she moved on to the other. “Lignum Navicula…”

After she felt that she was more relaxed, she started repeating the words for Tessa. "Lignum Navicula, Lignum Navicula, Lignum Navicula." Was she saying that right?
"Great pronunciation," she said with a warm smile to Lux. Now for the next part. "Okay, now that you've relaxed, picture the spell working in your mind," she told the girl. "Imagine every step- the word, the action, and the spell working. Once you have that in your mind, tell me," she said with a nod.
"When that's done, reach out, and say the spell as well as tap the wood, and let's see how it goes!"

Ian had a boat before him. It was a tiny boat, but a boat nonetheless. He hoped they got to keep the boats. This was kind of a cool, toy sized boat and he might be able to get the cat put on the boat. He shook his head Focus! he reminded himself.
He pointed his wand at the vine and spoke the incantation after practicing a few more times. Vinea Funiculus! He was pleased to find that after the incantation, he also had a measure of rope beside his boat.
"Though coconuts are my favourites we will not be conjuring coconuts, especially since coconuts would fall under food." She heard what she said to Miss Fischer right?
"We could but note how the vine becomes an automatic swing and wraps tight on the plant? You'd conjure the robe but then you'd have to string it to swing and why go the muggle route?" Muggle..meh...
"Right on the mark students. Lignum Navicula transfigures fallen tree trunks, wood etc into small boats and vinea funiculus transfigures vines into ropes." Exciting wasn't it?
"Because of the nature of these spells, no fancy wand work will be needed a simple point and tap will do. You point at the vines and tap the wood." Clear enough?
"Notice that the wood pieces aren't quite big and that was on purpose. When we do part two of this lesson we will make the wood bigger and do bigger boats and longer vines."
She moved over to the wood and took one from the pile then put it at the front of the class and tapped it, clearly saying Lignum Navicula, then watched as the wood transfigured into a small boat, perhaps big enough to hold her grandson but no one much bigger. As for the vines, she took one up and hung it across two plants then pointed at it and the frail vines became fortified rope. Did they all see that?
"And that is all we'll be doing today. Please come forward and take a piece of wood and vine."
That was not what Sarah said. Sarah wanted to know about the accio spell. Of course she knew about Gamps law, she was not stupid.
The point about the ropes.. you could always use a spell to do the winding.
Sarah decided to live and let live. Time to practice incanation"Lignamt Navicula" "Lig-num Navicula" "Lignum Navicula" She got it!
Time to get the wood and vines. When she returned with it, Sarah practiced again.
Her tongue now warmed up, Sarah tried the next incantion "Vinea Funiculus" she said, getting it right the first time... She was getting better. At it!
What happened to the professor?
Time to try it out
When Bellaire gave permission to go up and collect supplies Ana did so, carefully picking up a piece of wood and a vine before making her way back to her desk, careful not to trip or do anything embarrassing on her way.
Placing her supplies on one corner of the desk she decided to practice the incantation and wand movements before she tried to properly cast the spells. She was pretty sure that she could do both spells, they seemed pretty simple really, but it was always better to practice the incantation when one could, before attempting to do it for real, where something could go wrong.
"Lingum Navicula," Ana muttered to herself, before shaking her head slightly. No that wasn't right. Looking back at the notes she'd wrote Ana noticed that she'd mixed up the n and g. Getting it right she practiced the pronunciation once more. "Lignum Navicula, Lignum Navicula," she whispered a few times before she was satisfied that she was pronouncing the spell correctly. Nodding once she slipped her wand from the holster she wore and moved the wood closer to herself. Time to perform the spell for real.
Ana took a deep breath before saying the incantation, "Lignum Navicula," and tapping the piece of wood with her wand. She smiled, pleased, when the wood turned into a small boat, like Bellaire had shown them.
Happy with her success with the first spell Ana turned her mind to the second one. Like with the first she repeated the incantation a few times without the accompanying wand movement before she was sure she had the correct pronunciation. Once she was she pushed the little boat to the side of her desk, and brought the vine towards the center.
"Vinea Funiculus," Ana said, while pointing her wand at the vine. As with the first spell she was successful in her endeavours and her vine was transfigured into rope. Happy with her success she sat back in her seat and waited for any further instructions from the professor.

Needless to say, she found the actual use of the spell to be more disappointing than what she'd first thought it would be. No rope swings and potential falls through the window--not that she expected the Professor to let them have rope swings hang from the window or anything amazingly epic like that. Ahem.
Lex followed behind the lot of them, going to get the necessary things to get this class started. Boat building was cool and so was the rope....though really...Incarcerous wasn't a bad choice either....just saying. Who knew, this might have been the easier of the two, she could point and jab at things. It was as easy as spells came at this place.
...And the Professor was leaving? Sweet--or did that mean they were in charge 'cause yeah....no.
Okay, now to figure out where she was meant to start.
Lex glanced at the wood then the vines then the wood again. Boat or rope? Decisions. Going by incantations, she'd take the rope, so...."Vin-ea Fu-ni-cu-lus....Vinea Funi-culus...Vi-ne-a Fu-nicu-lus...." Not particularly necessary but she always found that giving the incantation some time to roll off her tongue generally reduced the chances of her messing up while casting it. Intent wouldn't be a problem once she got to the actual casting.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Adi figured he'd need to practice the rope spell again and again until he didn't have any problems with it but for now he'd move on to the next one. He hoped he could keep up the success of the first spell and not take too long.
''Lignum Navicula, Lignum Navicula, Lignum Navicula, Lignum Navicula,'' he practiced without his wand. A tap was pretty much easy anyway. The second year set the wood directly in front of him. ''Lignum Navicula!'' he said confidently and with a tap of his wand.
Sarah took a piece of wood and placed it in front of her. "Lignum Navicula" she said giving a tap of her wand on the wood, she pictures in her head what kind of boat she wanted. She looked at it... it was not exactly what she had wanted but it was a boat nevertheles.. Should she perfect it or try the other spell?
She decided to try the other spell first.
She tapped her wand on the vine, "Vinea Funculus" she said. Wrong... she had it right before. Another tap, "Vinea Funiculus" she said this time getting it right. However she had forgotten about intent, she tried again, usin gall three components of a spell, "Vinea Funiculus" and behold the vine became a rope

Well fine not enough.. fine.. fine he would do it more, because he would do the spell. Bart was not one to give up. So he would either do the spell right or at least do something and right now this vine wasn't doing anything.
"Come on you dumb vine change" He was annoyed that it didn't work right off the bat, he didn't like to work this hard to get thing right. Holding his wand tightly he tapped the vine very dramatic like. "VINEA FUNICULUS" So that might have been a little loud, but hey maybe the vine didn't hear him.
What he didn't expect is the vine to jolt up and hit him in the face. "Owww" Stupid thing he pushed it away from him. "What am I doing wrong" He was not having it with this vine. It was going to end with it being a rope or catching fire he'd be fine with either.

Alexa was about to sound out the incantation again when someone went yelling about it? What the kneazle? She lowered her wand and gave a quick look around. No Professor...right...that caused problems like the one Bart was having? Seriously, it wasn't that hard, but she did remember when everything was.
"Oi." She said by way of catching his attention and a look for yelling. "It's not got shoddy hearing, you know." Because clearly he didn't know.
She looked to her own vine again, trying to remember the advice she'd gotten over the years where this stuff was concerned. "C'mere, I'll show you." And guide him and all that other responsible prefect-y stuff that was expected of her. Really she just wanted him getting it. Lex knew first hand that there was nothing more frustrating than a spell that didn't work.

She was leaving them? Was she NUTS? Hadn't she realized after all her years here that you couldn't just leave a bunch of kids alone without an adult? Things just got crazy and they got crazy FAST. Ah well. He was just here to learn, so if something blew up due to lack of supervision, it was NOT his problem.
He picked up his wand and tapped it against the vine. "Vinea Funiculus!" he exclaimed. The vine moved a bit like a snake and started to coil into the texture of a rope, but it remained green and considerably plant looking. Well, that wasn't bad for a first try!
"Vinea Funiculus!" he said again, trying the spell for a second time. TAP. He watched as the vine did the same thing, although this time it coiled a bit tighter and felt a lot more like a rope than a vine. He was making progress!

Delilah watched the professor leave before her gazed turned towards the piece of wood and vine on her desk. Okay, time to start working. She took out her wand from the bag and held it for a moment. She was going to get the pronounciation right before attempting the first spell. Mhm.
What was the first one?.. Oh, yeah. "Lignum Navicula. Lignum Navicula." Yeah, she got it right. Yes. Taking a deep breath, she tapped her wand against the wood and repeated the spell loudly.
.... A BOAT. She did it, yes! The blonde grinned to herself, feeling extremely pleased.

Sander was about to practice changing his vine into a rope when he heard another young voice scolding the vine they were were to transfigure. Sander turned around and was about to walk over and help the young lion when one of the prefects beat him to it and was now talking to him.
Sander shrugged. The boy was getting the help he needed now, so it was back to practicing for him. Reverting the rope back into its original form, Sander kept his eye on it, while concentrating on what he wanted the vine to change into.
Then he pointed his wand at the vine and said the magical words, "Vinea Funiculus". He watched as the vine started to thicken and soon it was no longer a vine but a rope.

Anyway, she could say it correctly now. Phew, okay. She could do this. Delilah tapped her wand against the vine, feeling rather anxious. "Vinea Funiculus."
... Wait. What happened? She stared. There was no rope. What did she do wrong!? Sighing, she tapped her wand again and repeated the spell. Nope. Wait, what? But thankfully, after a few more failed tries, she finally did it. There was a rope on her desk now.

Alright, time to do some more practicing! Caleb cleared his throat and tapped the rope once again. "Vinea Funiculus!" he exclaimed. He watched in amusement as his vine started turning into a tightly coiled rope, even changing color this time! BAM! He was awesome.
Time to move onto the next one, yes?
"Lignum Navicula!" he exclaimed as he tapped the wood with his wand. The wood began to change shape, but it still didn't look all that impressive. Or anything like a boat. It was a start though. Couldn't get them on the first try ALL the time...

Theo liked performing spells with Professor Bellaire watching. Especially when he was good at him. Actually, maybe this was a good idea, to get good practice in before she got back. "Lignum Navicula." He muttered a couple of times to himself. Pretty simple. He picked up his wand and gave it a wiggle, before tapping it onto the piece of wood. "Lignum Navicula." He said lazily.

Pfft.
Stupid vine.
If the thing wasn't already dead, she would've made sure it was since it didn't feel like cooperating with her. Rhodes placed her wand back down onto the desk to pick up the vine and give it a rather frustrated shake. She.. didn't really think it was going to help her any, but it sure made her feel better and she was now a lot more confident to try the spell again.
She moved a few stray hairs from out of her face before setting the vine back onto her table and picking up her wand once more. Okay. She could DO this. Concentration! If only she could make everyone in the lesson shut up..
TAP.
"Vinea Funiculus." FINALLY! She had a rope instead of a vine. Sure, it wasn't a very fancy rope. But it wasn't like she had any plans on ever going into the jungle to need that kind of spell. So the rope she was good enough for her! She placed the thing underneath her chair, to move it out of the way before pulling the piece of wood forward and giving that a tap with her wand.
"Lignum Navicula."
Great. She had a stupid piece of wood, too.

Vine-to-rope spell was done. Check. Out of Astrid's to-do list. The last and only thing she needed to do now was to get the wood-to-boat spell right. No problem, though! With a little bit of practice and concentration, which seems to be her only problem, she would be able to do it in no time. She set her rope aside so that she didn't mess things up, and brought her piece of wood closer to her. Alright... the hand movement didn't need to be practices because it was too simple. Just a simple tap of the wood and TADA! That was the hand movement for this seemed-like-a-hard-spell-at-first-but-is-actually-a-very-easy spell. Ahem... anyway. Practice time.
"Lig...num. Lignum. Lignum Na..vi...cu...lah. Nah-vee-coo-luh. Navicula. Lig-num Na-vi-cu-la." Alright, she was getting the hang of this now. "Lignum Navicula." Was that right? She was right! "Lignum Navicula. Lignum Navicula. Lignum Navicula." A little bit more practicing wouldn't hurt after all. Astrid didn't wanna see like she was reciting a tongue twister of some sort, but yeah. She should get started on the real thing.
Ahem. Here it goes. "Lignum Navicula." TAP.
.................. Did that work or...? Astrid eyed her piece of wood. Come on, turn to a boat now.

With a successful vine-gone-rope laying in front of her, Sophie moved it off to the side for a moment and placed the log in its place on the tabletop. Lignum Navicala. Liiiiiignum Navicala. A vine to a rope had been easy to envision because the items were already so similar, in her mind. But a log... to a small boat? She had to put down her wand, clasp her hands, and focus hard on envisioning that one. What did she want it to look like? A sailboat? A canoe? Did it matter? A canoe-like boat made the most sense in Sophie's mind, so she opened her eyes and focused on the log itself.
Yeah. Okay. She could do this.
The Ravenclaw pressed her lips together tightly, listening to the pronunciations of students around her. Lig-num Na-vi-ca-la... that was the one she had decided she liked best, right? She chanted it to herself a few times monotonously, then scooped up her wand, rotated it in her hand for a moment while she concentrated hard on what she wanted to have happen, then pointed and tapped her wand against the log, "Lignum-" No. She already knew she wasn't going to succeed - she had lost focus and wasn't picturing what she wanted to have happen. She wanted it, but she needed to see it happen again. She closed her eyes for a moment, focusing entirely on the task before her, then pointed and tapped her wand upon the log again, seeing it transform in her mind's eye, "Lignum Navicala!"
Much to her surprise, the log began to transfigure into a canoe-like shape - the bottom of it rounded, the top of it dipped downward, and Sophie let out a sigh of relief, letting herself relax against the back of her chair. Transfiguration was no joke, man. Exhausting.
Tobias shifted in his seat to prepare himself and was about to pick up his want and start working when he realised he should probably try out the incantations first. The Hufflepuff nodded to himself and checked the spelling of the two spells in his notes against how they were written on the board, just to double check everything was in order.
After deciding the vine spell was probably a bit easier than the wood one, Tobias figured he should probably start with that one. The boy cleared his throat and practiced the incantation a few times.
He paused for a moment, just to make sure that he was sounding it out just like those around him who were managing the spell, and adjusted his own pronounciation where needed. "Vinea Funiculus."
Vinea Funiculus indeed.
Okay, before he actually tried the spell properly, it was worth trying out the wand movement, even though it was only a simple one.
The Hufflepuff picked up his wand and looked at the vines and... point.
Like that, yeah?
Point.
