With the harsh winter months easing, the student garden is in need of some TLC, and it's not the only one. Her long grey hair twisted up into a bun, Professor Bentley waits for the students to arrive, casually resting in plush armchair which she has brought along for the day.
Small tables and stools are positioned sporadically in the wide open space within the entrance of the student garden, now that it's no longer occupied by the visiting topiary. The old blackboard has been wheeled out for the occasion and beside it is a tiered trolley holding trays of seedlings.

Fertilizing? Mo leaned waaaaaaay over and peered under his bottom frame, where the ivy was potted and tucked out of sight. It was a good thought, but could he even get anything in there? Suppose he'd have to try, which was probably good practice since Mo would have to figure out how to water his topiary at some point too.
It was hard work to once again rise to his feet and hobble over to get the regular fertilizer, and even harder to lug back enough to make it worth the effort, and Mo was panting by the time he made it back to his topiary. Whew. He was so over this being old thing.
The bottom frame was easy enough to shift upwards on the post, and so Mo was able to loosely pack fertilizer around the potted ivy. He watered again for good measure. "Aguamenti." If he was feeling more clever, he would have used the special fertilizer and made the wings on his Snitch flap, but Mo was quite pleased with his stationary, non-magical topiary.

"Cactus." Hissss. "Cactussssss. Get me some dung, okay? Okay."
But when Mo came back, he was completely dungless, save for the fertilizer that he required for his own topiary. Had he even heard her? What a horrid friend. Alice made faces at him before dramatically hoisting herself up, knees popping in the worst of ways, and hobbling over to the shed herself. Her legs were aching even worse when she arrived back with her dragon dung and water mixture, all contained inside a spray bottle.
Getting to squirt horrid smelling stuff around was so worth it, though. When Bentley wasn't looking, she might have sprayed a lil' bit in Mo's direction.
He deserved it.

Marigold flippnsnipwitited or whatever a couple more times to form the top crest, just for PERFECTION. She was so intent with getting everything perfect that she didn't even realize that fertilizing was happening. Whoops. She saw a couple people get up to grab some ...
Ew, was that dragon dung?
Oooof course it was. Marigold grabbed a lot and came back to her lovely topiary. She patted some of the poop - well fertilizer, but she knew what it was - around her soil and base of the plant then stood up.
After she had finished the wings of her winged horse, Beverly moved to finish the rest of her creature. The most difficult parts were done with, so it left little to do.
The third year was sat on her stool under the winged horse, trimming away the last of stray foliage. Oddly enough, she was at peace while shaping the topiary. Sure she was exhausted and ready to nap, but...she really liked this. Maybe she'd consider Herbology more seriously.
When professor Bentley's voice reached her ears, Beverly glanced all around until her eyes landed on her. Oh. Hi. There you are. Finishing up a few touches, she hobbled out from under her winged horse.
Fertilizing, she says. All righty! Lets get that done. She didn't start this to not see it fully animated.
Walking to and from the shed, the Slytherin girl came back with dragon dung fertilizer and a spray bottle - which was luckily marked - and filled it with water.
"Aguamenti," she cast.
Magic acting up again, water shot out in the slowest stream of Aguamenti history. While she waited for the 800ml of water, she poked at the dung. Ugh. Smelly thing was smelly. But it'd do good to her beautiful winged horse. Double ugh. She'd done a great job even in old age. :3
Once the dung was in the water, she swished the bottle around. Mix already so she could spray her horse. Whaa!

Could she get away with pretending she didn't understand the question to begin with? Nah, that'd never work, she was having intelligent conversations about jumping off towers only a minute ago. SIGH. This was going to kill her a little on the inside, especially now that she'd lost her candy bag and was living off candy scraps. She needed to speak with Cutty. "I've got a chocolate frog left--" Oh wait what? ONE left?? Onnnneeeeeeee? She would cry. Legit.
...Eh. "Here you go Professor." She said fishing the last of her candy supply from her pocket and handing it over. Her attention turned next to one Cutty Mordaunt. "We need to talk."
Animation! Yes! She didn't want a fixed topiary obviously so at the mention of watering cans and special kinds of fertilizer she was making her way to the supply shed again. She grabbed both a spray bottle and a watering can just in case. Had to experiment with methods afterall and while she was there she grabbed some dragon dung before getting back to her spot by Jun.
"Nah, not the Astronomy Tower. Professor Airey might see and he's got this rule about red shirt syndrome or something." Basically speaking out against the Gryffindors mhmmmm. "He'll think we'll get ourselves killed or something. Which we wouldn't. We're not Firsties and we know how to fly a broom." Plus she and Lottie had dived from Gryffindor Tower, it wasn't that hard. "Maybe a window on the seventh floors corridor when no one's looking or after everyone else has gone down?" That could work instead.
Lex added what she thought looked and felt roughly like an ounce of dung into her spray bottle. Potions came in handy for estimating in the long run. "Aguamenti."....That...was about it....."Finite." She closed the top over the bottle and began shaking it vigorously. "I think it's rubbish to do that. Don't we already suffer through enough exercise these days?"
Shake shake shake. That looked dissolved enough, yeah?
Blue eyes watching expectantly, Seren beamed a wrinkly toothy grin as the prefect somewhat reluctantly fished out some chocolate. "Thank you, dear," she replied with some enthusiasm, accepting it and turning to Bay...

While the students so aptly went about with the care requirements, Seren took a moment or two to admire some of the work. It wasss pretty remarkable what they had achieved, and for the most part she could make out what they were. It took practice and skill to get them right, these were all excellent starts. The frog was cute, as was the dog. It took her a little while and some head tilting and eye blurring to realise she was staring at a penguin, but alas, a penguin it was. A dragon, nice... and... what was that? Seren eyed an ivy covered spherical creation.. unable to connect the dots as to what it was. Either way, it looked nice.

"Now let the animating begin!" she announced, resuming her position on the armchair, letting herself sink into the cushions. It was soft. And her legs were tired. She could sit and instruct from here, yep. "There are two spells we use when animating in herbology," she started, giving the board another tap with her wand, "the first is to animate whole plants, that is plantea locomotor, and the second is to animate parts of it -- or more specifically, it's foliage, which is motofolius."
New words formed on the blackboard, erasing the Dragon Dung Solution details.

Ian watched as the herbology professor looked at his creation. He realized it was rather crude as he wasn't exactly the best pruner. It did rather appear to be a penguin, but a beat up one. He stepped back next to the professor and noted it was a little off kilter but still he was proud of his work.
He looked at the instructions on the board and tried to decide what motions he wanted the penguin to take. Penguins waddled some and perhaps that was the movement, but maybe it would be simpler if Ian had the topiary just go up and down This is sitting, this is standing, this is sitting, this is standing the words of a cartoon he'd seen when he was a small child returned to his mind and he smiled. He actually lost track of what he was doing as he moved up and down...this is sitting, this is standing...

Sander listened attentively when Professor to them the spells to animate their plants. Yes! Spike was going to be running around soon. There were two spells. The first one would animate the entire plant, while the second would only animate parts of it. Since Spike would be running, that would involve the entire plant moving, so Sander opted for the first spell.
Before he did anything, he pulled out his journal and quill and quickly copied down the spells, their incantation and wand movements into his journal.

Once he had completed writing, he stuffed the journal back into his backpack. Now it was time to practice saying the incantation and the wand movement.
He first practiced saying it. "Plantea Locomotor....Plantea Locomotor....Plantea Locomotor....Plantea Locomotor....Plantea Locomotor," until he was familiar with the words.
Next to practice the wand movements. Unholstering his wand, he held it aloft. Easy enough. He knew though that the toughest part of the spell was actually casting it and having it work right. But practice makes perfect.
Now it was time for him to try casting the spell that would animate his topiary.

Bay was still hurting.. as soon as he got back to the common room he would be getting some heat packs for it… and be laying down thats for sure.. now that he little tree was completed… he listened to Professor Bentley ohhh he has to help put the trimmings in the compost bin….
looking down at his knee and the distance between the compost and all the trimmings he raised his hand.
"errr Professor Bentley.. my tree isn't going to be animated… and errr my knee is still hurting.. is it okay if just stay here and maybe sit down?"
he was hoping that he would be able to sit while he waited for everyone to complete their tasks so he can do the rest of the work that was yet to come.

Ooooookay, so this sounded easy enough, although...nothing was ever as easy as it seemed. Sophie would just have to see once she'd gotten good and started. Also, she'd learned that it was always best to just practice things first, and that way she could be pretty sure of herself before trying things for real.
So basically, she just wanted to animate the dragon's head and mouth. Animating the whole body would be kind of scary and creepy, and since this was just a run of the mill garden topiary, she decided not to overdo it. "Motofolius," she said aloud. "Motofolius." Simple enough. She swished and swirled her wand about, which was pretty simple, too.
So now all she needed to do was develop a plan. She'd need to charm the neck and the mouth, for sure. She didn't see the need to animate much else. So maybe she was ready to try it? Hmm?

Adi's topiary wasn't going to be animated. He was kind of glad about that right now because his knees seemed to be hurting a lot more than before. So maybe he could sit down? Professor Bentley won't mind, right? She already seemed so grumpy that he didn't want to annoy her further.
But first he'd help with the trimmings. Yes. Maybe if she saw him helping out, she won't get annoyed when she saw him sitting down. So Adi did just that. He gathered as much of the trimmings as he could carry and stalked off towards the compost bin. He made three trips in total. He would have done more but he was tired.

Okay, Caelen was a little behind. It took her a little longer to actually shape the topiary and she had to use the fertilizer. And she still wanted to do some clean up on a couple of branches that were a bit too long. The redhead was kind of a perfectionist. It was like her thing.
Anyway, she grabbed some fertilizer from where she caught everyone else grabbing it and sprayed it on her plant. Nom, nom, nom little birdcage. Or was it a dwarf birdcage? Astronomy messed her up man. All these stupid dwarf planets. Shouldn't they be REAL planets? What was the criteria anyway? And who got to say whether a planet was dwarfy or not? Mean scientists with their dwarf planets.
Ahh, wait. Okay, focus. She listened and then thought of what she was doing to do. To animate or not to animate? Yeah, an animated birdcage sounded awesome. Her mind was made up. She was animating it. Because having a hop along birdcage sounded like the greatest thing to write home about ever. And that reminded her of the letters she needed to read from Rockwell. But first, practice.
"plantea locomotor." Okay, that was the spell. She quietly whispered it four times. "Plant-ea loco-motor." She whispered the syllables a couple of times, trying to make sure that her pronunciation sounded good. That sounded good. Okay, rinse and repeat. Because practice made perfect and she wanted her cute little hop along birdcage-with the vine she had to struggle so long to get wrapped around the top and then stretch down to the trunk nicely- to be perfect.
"Plantea locomotor. Plantea Locomotor."

It was time to cast the plant animation spell. Sander stood next to his topiary and concentrated on what he wanted the spell to do. He wanted his topiary to move, run around the garden before returning back to where it had been planted.
Sander knew that he was expecting a lot from himself, especially since this was the first time he was attempting to cast a spell of this nature, but he figured it was worth a try. If he wasn't successful by the end of the lesson, he would seek assistance from Professor Bentley.
Concentrating as hard as he could on what he wanted the spell to do and visualizing Spike running, Sander held his wand aloft in the direction of his plant and said the words to the incantation,"Plantea Locomotor." and waited.
....and waited....and waited.
Then he saw some movement. Wait were the leaves moving and the branches quivering? Sander stepped forward to closely inspect his topiary before realizing that the wind had picked up and was blowing through his plant. His plant was just simply moving in the wind.
Sander sighed. His first attempt had failed. Ending the spell, Sander decided to try again.

Okay, so Lux wanted to make only part of her mermaid move, as that was what she had recorded in the outline she had done for the homework. Besides, it would be a little creepy if her whole topiary started moving around as opposed to just Ariel's hair and part of her tail.
Since it would be more difficult to perform the spell on a seven foot tall topiary than a small one - and hers was about seven feet tall - Lux figured that it was a good idea to get some practice in. "Motofolius." Repeating the spell over and over again, she said it slow at first and then faster.
Once she was sure she had it down pretty good, she began throwing in the wand movement as well. Swish and swirl. Swish in swirl.

Benny continued to clip at his work until he stopped to look up at Bentley as she worked to move the class onto the final steps of care for the plants. He listened to the talk of fertilizing and registered the need. However as they were allowed to do what they needed to do, the Gryffindor continued to prune just a little more, figuring he had the time given he had no intention of animating his topiary. He had to make up for earlier lost time anyway so this was as good as time as any. Only when he was satisfied with his pruning and the basic shape of his plants for now did he stop.
On to fertilizing...which meant both movement...and smell.
He got up reluctantly and made his way to the pails that held the dragon dung. At least he didn't have to mix anything like the animators. Just had to deal temporarily with it as he took care of his topiary. Scooping up a bit in his gloved hands, wrinkling his nose briefly at the smell, Ben made his way carefully back to his potted work. He then set it aside on the workstation and went about slowly but surely adding the fertilizer bit by bit, conscious of the amount as he didn't want to smother the plants with too much.

So they weren't meant to spray the fertilizer until their topiary was up and moving, then? Okay. Ella waited until Professor Bentley had finished giving instructions and then slowly made her way back to the table where her notes were, wanting to take down the incantations so that she'd remember them.
Scribble. Scribble. Scribble.

Now Ella wanted the entire plant to move so she'd be more concerned with the first one, yes? And because she hadn't used it before, she practiced the incantation like she would any other spell to get a proper feel for it.
Luckily it wasn't too difficult to say although Ella was pretty positive that actually getting the spell to work wasn't going to be a cake walk. It took a lot of concentration and as her brain wasn't up to its usual awesomeness, she was sort of worried about performing it correctly. You never know until you try though so..yeah.
Making her way back over to the dinosaur topiary, the eighteen year old stood in front of it and closed her eyes, clearing her mind of anything other than thoughts of a moving dinosaur. She was going to start with a tail swish and then go from there, figuring it was best to master something little to begin with.
Hold wand aloft in its direction. Check! Remain focused and envision the desired movements. Check! "Plantea Locomotor."
Toby's topiary was not going to be animated, what with being Hogwarts and all. There were a few spells and stuff he was thinking about using, but they would be on extra little things he would add, rather than modifications to the plant itself. Other than the twinkling, but he still wasn't sure how to go about that.
But first, the fertilising.
He'd trimmed and shaped the wiggenbush as much as he dared, and Tobias was quite happy with moving on. He went off to find himself some fiiiiiiine dragon dung, returning shortly with what he'd determined to be a good amount. Tobias spent quite a lot of time on this part, wanting to ensure that the plant under his care would be well nourished. He knelt at the base of the bush once again and spent a good ten minutes or so evenly fertilising the soil at the bottom of the topiary castle.
Next thing Tobias heard from Bentley was something about spells, but it turned out that that was for animating too. Tobias was finished with the fertilising and stuff, but he did have a LOT of trimmings that could go on the compost heap.
Moving slowly, because that energy and agility of his was still missing, Toby scooped up as many clippings and cuttings and trimmings from the ground around him, holding his robes in such a way that they became a sort of bucket-type-pocket, allowing him to move a lot of clippings at once.
After a painful venture to get back into a standing position, Tobias took a second to caaaaarefully stretch his back, and started on one of what would be many trips back and forth to the compost heap.

Swishing and swirling until she was quite satisfied, Lux decided that it was time for her to move on to trying this out with her plant. First, she would do the spell on the tail, but since it was only part of the tail that was supposed to move, it was important to be careful with this.
Envisioning how she wanted her tail to move, Lux focused really hard on it as she swished and swirled her wand exactly where she wanted it animated. "Motofolius."
Nothing happened.
Alright then, time for her to try again. Focusing even harder on what she wanted to do, Lux tried again. With a swish and swirl, she said, "Motofolius."
This time, Ariel's tail began to move. Easier part done, it was now time for her to move on to the hair.

Bart had been looking at his plant and didn't notice the class moving on. He had just been in a daze at his lopsided frog. It really wasn't the best looking frog plant, but it was his frog plant. Seeing movement out of the corner of his eye he looked and realized they were doing something else.

He frantically looked around and then he noticed some notes. Oh right fertilizer. He had been spraying Leo all the time with the spray bottle Professor Plants had given him so he kind of new what he was doing. He shuffled over to get a spray bottle and shuffled back as quickly as his old legs would allow. Pouring in the one ounce Dung and then pointing his wand, "Aguamenti" he watched the water go into the mix. Once he had the right amount he mixed it together until it was dissolved.
He looked up just in time to see what was next. It was time to make them move.. WHOOP WHOOP!! This was the exciting part and he was going to get this! So just lift the wand and say the spell thinking about it moving, got it. He turned towards his frog and lifted his wand. Trying to vision it taking him to classes. "Plantea Locomotor "
Did it work? Nope the weird looking frog just stood there kind of looking as if it was laughing at Bart.

Okay it was time for him to try casting the spell again. Sander reminded himself that he needed to concentrate really hard on how he wanted the spell to work and what he wanted his topiary animal to do once the spell was cast.
He first began visualizing his dog leaping off its main trunk and then landing on the grass before proceeding to run around the garden a few times before returning back to where it had originally been planted and changing back to an inanimate plant.
He kept that image in his mind as he raised his wand, held it aloft in the direction of his topiary and said the words to the incantation,"Plantea Locomotor," and waited with abated breath for the spell to take effect.
To his amazement, he saw the head of his topiary dog begin to move, followed closely by its legs. Then the tail began to wag.

But nothing else happened. After a couple of head shakes, legs moving in mid-air and tail wagging, all movement ceased. Sander sighed again.
He had been so close this time to getting his topiary to do what he had planned for it. Sander ended the spell again by saying,"Finite".

This is exactly what she could appreciate about Cutty. Always so professional. No questions asked, just making himself available for the time when she would need him. This was why he would run a successful business and why she'd continue supporting him, especially now in her hour of need.

Now then, she didn't feel as bad about handing over that chocolate frog. There would be more to come.

Only he didn't seem to need it, quite content on getting back on with his work. Such a miraculous recovery, though she was sure he was still feeling it.
Meh... she turned back to Lex.
"You're in luck, you can keep it.. but thank you for being kind enough to supply it."
"It's no problem at all Professor." Really. She just spoke with her candy dealer, everything would be fine--Oh? Er...she could keep it then? Well wasn't that just a waste. She'd already mentally prepared herself to part with the chocolate...not that she was complaining. "His loss." She said with a shrug, plopping the chocolate frog back into her pocket. She would deal with it after class.
Ahem.
What was that about animation now? Oh right! The spell! She would need those and made quick work of scribbling them down. For now the fertilizer was neglected since it didn't seem she'd be needing it til the very end when the plant was moving...if it every moved. The Professor wasn't making it sound promising.
"Plantea Locomotor...Plan-te-a Lo-co-mo-tor....Pl-ant-e-a Loc-o-motor..." Focus and attention to detail she could do that. "Plantea Locomotor."
Had to visualize the movement of the plant. See it happening in her mind exactly how she wanted it happening for real. Think cat-like. Fluid. Focus. Lex tried imagining Felix when he was darting about in her dorm or trying to sneak off to the owlery when he thought she wasn't watching. That's the kinda movement she wanted for her topiary.
"Plantea Locomotor!"

Time to animate. Brynn wasn't planning on doing that to her scraggly mess of a plant, but she looked up anyway as the teacher started talking. She frowned a little wishing she was sitting in a cushy armchair instead of standing, her legs were getting tired, but there was no use dwelling on that. It wasn't happening.
She vaguely paid attention as the spells were written on the board and briefly discussed. Maybe she'd need to know these one day, but today was not that day. They looked hard anyway. Though she did think it might be funny to animate the stubby little tail to make it wag. But she ultimately decided against it.
And since she wasn't animating, she was asked to clean up some of the trimmings. Brynn took a cursory glance of the area. There were a lot of students and most of them were animating. In fact there were only two boys cleaning up at all which meant they had a lot of work to do. Sigh. The first year slowly bent down and started picking up the trimmings directly around her plant, gathering up as much as she could. Finally she managed to straighten up again and she shuffled towards the compost bin to toss it all in.

That spell. It was easy, right? Alice didn't bother with the practicing, just got straight to performing it. Sure, the professor said they required attention and perseverance and all, but SHE of all people would get it on the first try. Without even bothering to mutter the incantation under her breath, the seventh year when ahead and held her want out toward the topiary.
"Plantea Locomotor!"

Cringing visibly, she backtracked a bit. Fine, then. Practice it was.

If at first you don't succeed, try and try again. And that was why Sander was trying again. If fact, Sander had decided that he was going to do more than try, he was determined that by hook or by crook, he was going to see Spike run. Master Yoda had said, Do or Do Not, there is no Try...and Sander had always thought himself a good Jedi Knight.
So just like Luke Skywalker did when he first learned how to fight those flying laser balls blindfolded, Sander closed his eyes, blocked out every sound, every distraction and cleared his mind of all thought except one.
He visualized his topiary dog coming alive. He visualized Spike shake its leafy head and wag his leafy tail. He visualized his topiary trotting around the garden once before returning back to where it had originated from taking root and finally remaining still.
Keeping that image in his mind, Sander slowly opened his eyes, held his wand aloft over his topiary and said, "Planteo Locomotor" and waited to see what would happen next.

Sophie now felt confident in casting this new spell instead of just practicing it. She'd even planned out the places she would animate, which were the neck of the dragon and the mouth of the dragon. She had also planned, in her last homework assignment, to have a warm, blue fire come out of the dragon's mouth, but that seemed too advanced now. Oh, well.
Sophie approached her topiary and flicked her wand out her holster. "Motofolius," she said, while swishing and swirling her wand over the neck of the dragon. She got a good mental picture of what she wanted to do--she wanted to make the neck twist and turn so that the dragon appeared to be moving around. "Motofolius!"

It was an homage to Quidditch. Mo made faces at Bentley, encouraging her to recognize the genius of his work... but no. She didn't get it. She was probably not into sports or something. Whatever, though, 'cause his topiary was glorious and he hadn't planned on making it move, so it was also done.
Another glorious thing.
Mo eyed the trimmings on the ground with a grouchy expression, regretting every time he had to bend over and pick up something off the ground. Ouch, knee. Ouch, back. Ouch, shoulder. Ouch ouch. And now the trimmings needed to go in the compost pile, which was WAY over there.
He glared at the pile in question before tromping his way across the garden to drop all his foliage bits and pieces into the pile. And now he could go watch other people struggle to get their plants to move. Amateurs.
