Default The Observatory

Feel like looking at some stars? You've come to the right place. From here in the Hogwarts Observatory you can see a tiny fraction of the 400 billion or so stars found in the Milky Way Galaxy. This circular but spacious room has been locked and opened as many times as there have been Astronomy professors staffed at the school. The huge telescope that former Hogwarts Astronomy professor, Professor Anteres, had put in years ago is still here and fully operable. Students are very welcome to try and use it. If you need a hand Professor Flamsteed is always somewhere close by and can lend you assistance. If the giant telescope is too much there is always smaller telescopes stored away in the cupboards around the room which you can borrow and use as you please as well as other astronomy objects.

Large star charts are pinned to the walls which anyone is free to study for own leisure or school assignment. Don't try and take the charts down though, as they are charmed to warn if somebody tries to remove them.

Stargazing is an activity best practiced at night and therefore the observatory remains unlocked. Students adhere by a curfew and after that hour no students should be found out of bed. If you desire to study the heavens after curfew, you need a signed note from Professor Flamsteed showing that you are allowed to stay up after hours. If caught after hours without a signed note you can expect that there will be consequences like loss of house points or detention.

The observatory is place for scientific inquiry much like the library is a place to immerse yourself in books, since it’s a shrine to our massively beautiful universe. Please respect any teacher or student spending time in the observatory by not running around or shouting in high pitched voices. Just because Professor Flamsteed isn't currently in the observatory doesn't mean he isn't watching what is going on.

OOC: you do not HAVE to RP your character asking permission from Professor Flamsteed in his office before posting here after hours and may pretend that you received permission. Also, please keep in mind that while looking at the stars can be a romantic endeavor, that is not the purpose of the observatory and any mischief may result in points being deducted or detention.

Default Astronomy Homework Post #1
❅ Purple Lightsaber ❅| | Captain Sarcastic |

When the seventh year thought that it was dark enough to do some stargazing he made his way ever so slowly up to the seventh floor Observatory to do his Astronomy Homework Assignment. He had started working on the questions option of the assignment. He hopped that would be easier but no he got to the hubbles law question and got too confused.

So he polished up and cleaned his telescope. Bought it up here with him just in case he needed to use it or get a closer look at some thing.

He decided that since it was a slightly cloudier night out that it would be best to go ahead and use his telescope. He sat up his telescope at the perfect spot.

He peered through it looking for something note taking worthy.

Uh nothing nothing and nothing. He straighten up and walked around in front of his telescope. Looking up at the sky, he looked for something anything. WAIT WAS THAT A SHOOTING STAR? He was totally sure that he had just seen a shooting star. Yeah. It was something. He looked at the time. When over to his notebook and wrote:

Shooting star 8:43 pm Dec. 15, 2082

Moving back to the telescope he looked through it again. He moved in over move more. Aye matey! There was a big yellowish white star? No it had to be Venus. It was way to big in the telescope to just be another star. He was looking west too so yeah I had to be. He looked out of the telescope in the same spot as he did in it. It was Venus it wa brightest thing outside besides the moon. He looked at his watch and got his notebook again and wrote:

Spotted Venus 9:01 pm Dec. 15, 2082

A minute after nine? He was missing The Walking Dead It was getting late very late. He would have to finish the assignment tomorrow night maybe he would set up base somewhere else. He packed up his stuff and left.

He hated to be wrong in front of people and rarely would admit when he was. A smiled crossed his face as she said neat and he knew she saw it. That was great! So he could know how to read these things. Glancing down at his book again. Why was it so hard to read. "Lumos" Well that really didn't do much to help the blurred text.

He glanced back up at Brynn when she said about finding planets. "Yeah we could do that." He was very hesitant in that by looking at his book trying to figure out how to find one. "How do we know when it's a planet?" Head scratches were seriously going on at the moment as he looked at his best friend. He handed the book towards her maybe she could figure it out. "Don't they just look like stars?" He looked up at the sky it was clear he could see stars, but to pick out the planets he was super lost.
Brynn gave Bart a weird look when he lit the end of his wand. It wasn't like it was that dark in here or anything. Though she did feel the need to rub her eyes before shaking her head a second and peering down at the book. Her eyes were so.. weary. Was that the right word?

Um.. Brynn furrowed her brow a bit, hearing Bart's question and gave her shoulder a half-shrug. "I.." Well, she wasn't sure so she glanced down at the book again. "Yeah, I think they look like stars, but bigger and brighter, maybe." She squinted to look at the text. "I think we go by the location it says in the book and the size.. then that will let us know, I guess." Reading a little more, she looked up and said, "This says Venus and Jupiter should be easiest to see."

She started to walk back over to the telescope and stared at it for a minute before turning back around to look at her friend. "Bart, what do you think is wrong with us? I mean, do you still think it's an aging potion? Cuz I'm ready for it to be done now." Some parts of aging were kind of cool, but the grey hair and if this tired, achy thing were part of it, she was over it.

Poor boy had no idea what was coming.

"Vous êtes les bienvenus, mon élève," She said in reply. She was really so glad to be speaking her native tongue, she hadn't realized how much of her had been missing without it, truly now she felt more like herself then the girl had in ages.
She smiled at his blush, but though she found it adorable, she did not speak on it as she didn't want to embarrass the young man, except of course, when it came to her crushingly defeating him.
Whoa there Justine, you're starting to sound murderous there. Said the little voice in her head, and Justine once again, had to dial back her emotions.

"Oh, you certainly must, I was promised zee grand tour of 'Ogwarts, Zee tour to end all tours!" Justine said grandly. Giving the young man a small, very French pout of her lips.

She grinned happily as the young man said he had an idea, and bade her to come along. She quickly followed Louis command, walking up next to him and linking her arm through his as they walked towards the next stop.

Louis laughed aloud at Justine’s comment about being ugly when it came to games. “I can’t possibly imagine you looking ugly,” he teased, well aware she didn’t mean a physical-appearance kind of ugly. The competitive little French girl was now walking alongside her new Lion friend, and with arms linked, the two new friends made their way back to the wooden covered bridge and through the courtyard, leaving behind a disappointed Whomping Willow who had been looking forward to having a new victim to send to the hospital wing.

By the time the Ravenclaw and the Gryffindor made it back to the castle, the sun had finished setting and night had set a blanket of darkness upon the snowy grounds. Louis looked up at the sky for a moment as they walked inside, then began to lead the way up and up and uuuup the stairs. The steps seemed never to end, it was actually quite a workout. But it was also kind of nice, since the exercise helped warm him up after spending so much time outside.

Once they reached the seventh and final floor, Louis began to lead the way into the astronomy tower and then, to his second absolute favourite place in all of Hogwarts - the observatory.

“Ta-dah!” Louis opened his arms and presented the beautiful room, whose centerpiece was a huge telescope that promised an amazing view of the stars. “I present to you… the Hogwarts observatory.” He half-smirked, “Did Beauxbatons have anything like this?”

Justine giggled at the boys words, it wasn't a feminine-I-like-you giggle, it was a that-was-funny-you're-funny giggle. "You'll see soon enough, jeune lion," She cheekily said, allowing Louis to guide her back through the warm school, (a welcome change after the cold of the grounds) she didn't pester him about where they were going as she wanted very much to be surprised, but as they climbed high, and high through the castle, finally, when her curiosity was beginning to overflow, they had arrived in the observatory.

The room was vast, its walls covered in huge and intricate star charts, and the best part, the part that had immediately captured Justine's attention: The most glorious telescope she had ever laid her eyes on. She approached the telescope slowly, reverently, taking it all in.

"il est magnifique!" The French girl exclaimed, sitting down in the stool next to the telescope, she immediately pressed her eye to the eye port, but could see nothing, oh yeah, she had know idea how to work one of these things.
"No, we certainly do not, We don't have many, Muggle zhings at Beauxbatons," She said, tucking back her long hair and fiddling with the knobs and doohickeys in an effort to make the thing work.

Louis chuckled as Justine exclaimed in French, watching as the girl took in the sight of the room before sitting by the telescope and beginning to mess around with the knobs in an effort to make it work. Well, she certainly wasted no time in trying things out!

“Here, let me help you,” said the Gryffindor as he took Justine’s place for a moment. He looked into the eye piece and adjusted the obnoxiously blurry sight that gave him nothing to look at but pure darkness, until very slowly bright little white dots began to take over the scene. It was truly, as Justine had put it: magnifique! “There.” The boy moved aside so Justine could take a look. He moved over toward the cupboards where the smaller telescopes were, and proceeded to set one up for himself.

“This is one of my hobbies, y’know,” he commented suddenly after a few minutes as he looked out through one of the nearest windows. “What about you, mademoiselle? Quels sont certains de vos passe-temps?” he asked.

"Merci," The Ravenclaw said, hopping to the side to allow Louis access to the telescope, she watched with interest as the Gryffindor fiddled with the beautiful device with the authority of someone who knows what they are doing. She could hardly wait and as the boy finished, she smiled with delight and hopped right back onto her stool.

Justine sighed as she took in the beautiful sight of the magnified night sky, she could see every star with crystal clarity, it was the most awe-inspiring of sights. Maybe the juggles did have a few things Wizards could learn from...

"You picked a wonderful 'obby Mr. Bolton," She said, looking away from the incredible sight to respond to Louis' question. "Laissez-moi réfléchir.... J'aime voler, et de la lecture, oh! et j'adore les animaux qui étudient, magiques ou moldus." She added, turning the telescope view to gaze at the milky way.

"Wow... " Justine muttered softly to herself.

De rien,” Lou replied with a smile as Justine eagerly returned to her place by the large telescope. He was glad she seemed to enjoy the view of the stars; most students seemed to prefer more action-filled activities, but he was content with just admiring simple things like the sky. How often was it that one got a chance to look at the stars so close-up? He’d have to be mad to waste every given opportunity to come up here and find inspiration in the stars. Not that he needed much inspiration for anything; Louis was more the logical type, less the creative type.

“I’m glad you think so,” he said from his spot by the window as Justine commented he’d chosen a wonderful hobby. He listened as she explained, in her native French, how she enjoyed flying, reading, animals and studying. He chuckled for a moment, “Well, the reading bit doesn’t surprise me…” He HAD, after all, met her in a pool of books in the library. The flying bit did catch his attention, though. “Do you play Quidditch?” he asked curiously. With her competitive nature, he assumed she would enjoy the game, though earlier she had only listed board games as her main battle arena.

Justine smiled softly at Louis before turning back to her own telescope, she grinned more broadly as she searched through the night sky for a familiar sight, and yes! There it was the North star, she had never seen it so clearly, so closely, with her mind she traced out the shape of the big dipper and the little dipper. (Ursa Major, and Ursa minor she thought, citing their proper names) she canned for a few more minutes before realizing that she really didn't know much of astronomy.
"I can't seem to find anything but zee big dipper and its smaller twin," She said with a twinkling laugh, she didn't need to know the stars to enjoy them, but she thought it would have helped her appreciated them more.

"Oui, you could not have picked better," Justine said, nodding enthusiastically. She smiled as he said he wasn't surprised by her love of books, considering how they had met she wouldn't have been surprised ether.

She smiled lightly as he asked her if she had played Quidditch, nodding lightly. "Oui, at Beauxbatons, I was Keeper for zhree years, I zhought I was very good," Justine said, smilingly fondly at the memories of her days on the Quidditch patch, she hoped had hoped to join the Ravenclaw team, but it seemed all the spots were filled. "'Ow about you? Do you play?" She asked, he didn't seem like the type, but he did have a good build for a Seeker.
