The Snakes sit under a brand new silver and green banner representing their house. Their solid, shiny wooden table is nicely polished with all the place settings perfectly set. The food will arrive after the Headmistress' traditional start-of-term speech. To all Slytherins, both new and old: welcome to Hogwarts!
Not that she ever didn't want to go to Hogwarts, because all she wanted was to not be homeschooled, but she was starting to think that attending this school of magic was a pretty good idea. Why in the world had her brother ever hated it for the first two years? Anna really did seem like a very nice girl. "I'm aaaa....fourth year? Granted, she was going to be fifteen in October so in her head she should have been a fifth year but she wasn't in any rush to become an adult so it hardly even bothered her.
"I'm assuming you're a first year?" She knew better than to assume these things, especially since Lottie herself was only five feet tall and was often mistaken for a preteen, but there was just something about Anna that screamed first year. If she was wrong, she would apologize, of course, but she was pretty positive that she was right.
"Yes, ma'am," she smirked for a second. Lottie seemed pretty nice, despite her obvious fear of others. Anna was curious and wanted to ask why, but it wouldn't be proper. "So, where do you come from?" she asked gently, not wanting to scare the fellow Slytherin.

"Okay, Anna," she said. Then remembered to grin. Yeah, grinning was friendly. Merlin. "I'm Beverly Wayne...third year.... How about you?"
Double O for effort.
Fighting, Bev, fighting!
"Wanye..." she repeated silently, that name seemed familiar...she didn't know where from, but it seemed familiar. "First year of course," she frowned, she didn't want to be first year, but she had to because of her age. "When is this headmaster going to began the speech? I am getting terribly impatient!"
The Headmistress had finished her speech and the tables had been served their elf-prepared dishes, so Cutty's eyes immediately began scanning for pickle juice. Finding none, though, he settled on a well-vinegared salad to start off his opening feast with. Also grabbed a sausage.

She had no idea who this guy was but she had a feeling he must have been part of a welcoming committee or something. People didn't just welcome random students..did they? "oh..and..hi?" Because saying hi was good manners, right?
Just then a young girl, about the age of her youngest brother, began talking to her. Maybe this was a thing, maybe people at Hogwarts were just nice and spoke to people they didn't know? And Lottie was positive this girl had way more manners than she did, introducing herself and proper grammar and all. She kept her smile up and nodded at this girl. "Hi, Anna. I'm..well, uh..you can call me Charlie or Lottie, your choice." There was no point in even mentioning that her name was Charlotte. Maybe if she stopped saying it, people would stop trying to call her it. "It's nice to meet you." As long as this girl, Anna, was nice and not too hyper, even though she's probably eleven, she and Charlotte would be just fine.
"Yeah, yer welcome." Came his calm response, though it was almost too casual and ran the risk of sounding insincere. Not something the boy intended. "Name's Cutty, by the way. Cutty Mordaunt. What's yours?" So long as he had her attention, he thought he might as well get acquainted with the name.

"So...you're like Hogwarts personal candy man?" Sure sounded like it, and it wasn't a bad thing. In fact, having a candy person this close to restock on sweets was a pretty darn good thing.
Oh, he was actually curious about that? Her over-protective dad. "Erm, well..." How does one explain years of living a sheltered life in a simple sentence? "I meant that he protects me from like, everything." Even dust bunnies, hence the really nice and charmed robes. "But he does it because he cares. I'm his youngest child." She shrugged.
It was reasonable. Grandmother protected uncle Xavier the most because he was the youngest (even if he was an old man). And uncle Xavier protected stupid Peyton because she was his youngest daughter. Reasonable.
The obvious reason tugged at the back of her mind, but she wasn't going there. Nope.
Beverly nodded politely. Of course it was nice to meet her, she had manners and came from great family, not that Cassia would know, and not that Beverly wanted to go all out with that. It'd be odd if she just started to talk about her family out of nowhere to a person she didn't know.
Once again she wondered if she didn't look her age. Maybe this was some sort of small talk thing. "A third year." Silence. "... You?"
O for effort. Yay.

"Yeah. You could think of me like that. Or call me that, even." Cause word-of-mouth advertising 'n such. The boy's voice lilted and squeeked and his brows raised simultaneously as the idea struck him as a good one. He privately began to wonder what her going rate would be, perhaps she'd be cheaper than Somerlad, no that Cuttz was ready to severe that little deal just yet.
Cutty had been periodically staring at his REAL SILVER goblet since the Headmistress had made her speech and it had appeared. He wasn't thinking about stealing from his school, but it was so shiny! Cutty had always read the parenting skills of his most recent ancestors as not giving a damn about him. But far from striking him as sad, he seemed to enjoy it.
Pulling his goblet away from his mouth, the boy nodded. "The youngest, h'mm? Well I guess that's to be expected." But now Beverly was out on her own. Part of him wondered if she would go drunk with power. Naaaah! Probably not. Probably daddy's girl and enjoyed being so looked after. She at least seemed to understand her father's motives. Where was Benzi Rider when he needed to place a bet on something?! He was Cutty's best-friend even if he hadn't heard from him in months. But again, Cutty liked the lack of attention.
The boy took one more drink before placing the silver vessel back onto the surface of the table then did a double-take...was that a Hufflepuff reflected in it's polished surface?

Cutty's glance hit the girls reflection before he actually turned to the girl and found it remarkable how she hardly seemed to blink, if at all. West Odessa had some manner of power over this girl and Cutty found it fascinating.
Perhaps he wouldn't leave West alone this term. Well, not entirely, as he originally planned. But how would he even get in?

She hadn't seen Sophie for ages. She smiled at Caleb though, before shaking her head.
"It feels okay?" She didn't feel any different really. Still felt like the same old Grace. She just was a hissing snake, and not a badger instead. She could learn to love that.
"You'll get used to it," Caleb assured her with a grin. "I love Slytherin, even though I felt a bit odd here at first," he said. "That lasted all of...five minutes," he added with another broad grin.
Yes, life as a snake was AWESOME.

So with this reasoning, Cutty made the descision to leave the details of the watersport activities done with his Dad's side of the family at Lake Okanagan on the cutting room floor thinking that he might get a better reaction out of Caleb by mentioning the learning bit.
"Egypt? That's pretty cool," Caleb said. It WAS cool to go to Egypt, but he tried not to sound too excited. He didn't want Cutty to think he was JEALOUS or anything. Cause he totally wasn't. "I shadowed my dad a bit in his job, just to see what he did. And we got a crup," he added with a grin. Yes, that was totally the highlight of his summer and he wasn't hiding it anymore.

She watched as Caleb greeting Theo next and contained her chuckle. Did Theo know that all those kids would be looking up to him or maybe just stick around to know the secrets of how he earned the badge on his chest.
It was faces like those she missed during the summer. Despite her seeing most of her friends, she now felt that those whom she called ickles had their own presence and effect in her life which she got used to during her school months but missed when she was at home. "I actually did. It was fun." she told him.
"Glad you like it," she winked at him lifting her hand and adjusting it uselessly since it hadn't tilted since she last checked its angle. "You ready for your second year?" she asked him knowing that he'd know she wasn't talking in an academic prospect.
"Oh definitely. I'm even more excited that we don't have any VISITORS this year," Caleb said with a grin. He looked around, just to double check that there weren't any visiting students that he'd overlooked, and satisfied that there weren't any, he turned back to her and smiled.
"I'm excited to see who our new head of house is now that gr--I mean Lafay--is gone," he told her. "Do you have any idea who is taking over?" he asked.
He needed to know so he could start making a good impression with them and stuff.

"No, I'm a second year," he explained. He didn't expect the older kids to recognize him, especially since he'd gotten all TALL and stuff.

"Good evening, Hogwartians." Anastasia waited for their eyes to settle on her before continuing. "Welcome back to school. For those of you who are new this year, including our lovely new Potions, Care of Magical Creatures, and History of Magic professors, and our Groundskeeper, welcome welcome." She flashed everyone looking at her a brilliant smile.
"I'm sure you all will be pleased to learn that our school's winnings from last year's European Board of Wizarding Education Quiz Bowl Scholarship Competition have gone to good use. All of our previously repossessed furniture, greenhouse plants, astronomy equipment, quidditch brooms, and so on, have been fully returned. You will also be pleased to note the restoration of your House banners and your authentic, SCHOOL-OWNED silverware." She felt it necessary to emphasize that point. Just in case any goblins were out there, listening, who knew. Ahem.
"I have no further remarks at this time, except that I expect you all to have a warm and wonderful school year full of learning, good behavior, and friendship. Now, let us feast!"
With a dismissive, queen-like wave of her arm, delicious dishes full of food and gravy and pumpkin juice and all the yummy things Hogwarts is known for appeared on the House tables. Happy feasting time! The Headmistress returned to her seat.
Oh,oh, speech!
The sixth-year turned in her seat and paid attention to the headmistress who didn't take forever to start off the speech. Or maybe she did but Cassia wasn't as hungry as she used to be at the start of term feast. You learn thing in school, snack before the feast, it may take forever.
Nodding along to the red-headed words', Cassia inserted her hand into her pocket distractedly and remembered something important she was meant to do. Yup. Now. Wasn't late. And yaay, food!

Here was someone who didn't talk much. Actually, come to think of it that was how most of the people Cassia met were. She probably was the weird one who liked to talk. Though she'd grown to not get all chatty with everyone she encountered. But now she was being normally friendly to a fellow and new snake. "I'm a sixth-year," Wow. That sounded old. She probably hadn't had to tell someone what year she was since .... she couldn't actually remember.
Anyway, the snake was reminded of something. She slipt her hand into her pocket and retrieved a roll of flyers.
"So Beverly, here," she handed the third-year a flyer upon unrolling them. Something West, Theo and herself planned and worked on. Exciting yeah!

It took her a second to understand what he meant about the visitors but then it rang. Yeah! Not foreigners. Cassia nodded at that. "You're right, no one with weird accents," not that some weren't cute.
Head of house. Yup. She knew because of the letter she received with the badge. "Mhmm." she answered gazing up at the staff table, "Right there!" she pointed jokingly knowing that she wouldn't be able to point at the healer from where she sat. But the woman was surely coming to announce the news so why ruin it, yeah?
"Oh, and also, this is for you," A flyer for Caleb!

Enjoy the good days, Theodore. They don't last forever.
Now to business, again. Cassia rose from her seat hoping no one was gonna steal her plate which she just filled and she might have inclined her head towards the plate while still looking at Theo encouraging him to guard her plate with his soul. She'd totally do the same for him. Buddies, yeah?
"Guys!" She spoke up, hoping to be heard by everyone, and waved the flyers around. "Before you start eating," Someone looked like they were about to devour the table plus the silverware. Cassia suddenly grew very excited and starting waving some papers around. Ehh...paperwork? Please be something interesting... Sophie was totally not up for an assignment or a seminar right now. She took a paper and read through it. A party? Hmm. Okay.
She wasn't too happy about a new Head of House, though. She'd wanted her grandmother to stay. Who was the new Head of House anyway?

"Thank you, I'm personally not a big fan of it," Annabel replied when she heard the girl complement her name. Her brother had named her that, after several days without a name. Anna saw how the girl straighted out after her eye caught on the badge, it wasn't her fault Anna was naturally attracted to shiny items, they just made her curious and with being stuck in her family's main estate, that decorations focused on wilderness, the metallic was quite unique. The girl introduced herself as Cassia. "Nice to meet you Cassia," she replied, it was a simple but nice name. Cassia handed her a flyer and her eyes quickly scanned over it. "Of course," she smirked, a welcoming party, "count me in of course." Truth was, Anna had never missed a party once. "So, what is that for?" she asked motioning towards the badge.

Her brother had tried to step in the best he could but he was too much of a boy! They shook hands and she was surprised how warm it was compared to her own. She couldn't be getting sick...could she?
"Wanye..." she repeated silently, that name seemed familiar...she didn't know where from, but it seemed familiar. "First year of course," she frowned, she didn't want to be first year, but she had to because of her age. "When is this headmaster going to began the speech? I am getting terribly impatient!"
Bev nodded with a ghostly trace of a smirk. M'hm. She's a Wayne, what's it you, huh?
She slightly frowned when the younger girl frowned. Had she said something wrong or did she just not like being so young? Bev could relate to that. "You don't like being a first year?" she inquired. But just as Anna questioned the speech beginning the Headmistress spoke.
"There you go," Bev said as the food appeared. "Food."

What was up with staring at the silver ware? Was it his first time having nice things to eat with and drink from? While Cutty didn't resemble anyone of middle class or lower, Bev wondered if her analyzing people's status was becoming faulty. She's always had a knack of telling by just studying the person. "Nice, isn't it?" she said, taking her globet and sipping. Mmm, pumpkin juice.
Dabbing her lips with a napkin, she nodded. "M'hm, I guess. It also means I have to work hard and make him proud," she added. This time with more a determined glint in her eyes rather than shy. She had to make Dad just as proud as Kennedy had, or more. More sounded better.
And there was a Hufflepuff gaping away. Bev decided to ignore her. She had no time for their sort. Hmph!

Cassia was a sixth year, Bev made a mental note to remember that. It could come in handy.
Ten seconds from that, it did. Bev was handed a flyer and quickly skimmed it. A party? A PARTY. She's never been to a party. Sure, social gatherings with her dad's business partners and families, but...with just...teenagers. Well...
Yeeeeeah.
As usual, her mind was already formulating what she could expect. Tapping Cassia's arm Bev whispered, "Erm, would it be okay if...like I had a question...if I could, y'know, ask you?"
Her hands were getting clammy once again, so she tugged her sleeves over them and set her hands on her lap. Asking for help wasn't an easy thing for the youngest Wayne.
"Food."
"No, I guess," Anna's hard voice was gone for a second, before replacing, "I guess I'm just not really good with new surroundings, specially without my brother." Yes, her brother Devon was important too, she didn't want to seem immature to the older girl by complaining about her age. Just as Anna asked another question about when the speech would start, it started. After the talk, food filled the table and her stomach rumbled, she hoped no one had heard.
