There are two options for this homework. Please only complete ONE of them for credit. Doing both will not earn you double the house points..

⌦ option one (worth 10 pts)
Giving the sudden dismissal of the lesson, use your textbook and answer the following questions to show your knowledge of the Big Bang Theory. Please keep in mind that not all of this was covered in the lecture.

1. Who is known as the 'Father of the Big Bang' and what was his theory called?
2. What is the initial explosion that resulted in the formation and expansion of the universe called?
3. In your own words, what is Hubble's law and how does it relate to the Big Bang Theory? Your answer should be at least 5 complete sentences long.
4. The very hot and dense nuclear matter that was present at the beginning of the universe's expansion slowly cooled. Name the two elements first formed as a result of this cooling and why they are important.
5. How long after the Big Bang did it take for the first star to form?
6. In class we briefly discussed the origin of the name, the Big Bang. Do you agree with the naming? Why or why not? If you could give the theory a new name what would it be? Your answer should be at least 5 complete sentences long.

⌦ option two (worth 10 pts)
While the farthest galaxies in the universe and way too dim to be seen with amateur telescopes found in the Astronomy Tower (including the HUDF.YD3 discussed in class) there are other galaxies that we CAN see even just by using the naked eye! Using your telescope and eyesight, go out on the grounds or utilize the Observatory and/or Tower Patch and observe the Milky Way Galaxy and the Andromeda Galaxy. You should also be able to spot a few planets (Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Uranus, and the dwarf planet Pluto).

If you spot anything else (another galaxy, a comet, etc), be sure to write it down!

OOC: This is an RP only task. Two posts minimum. Your character does NOT need to find all of the celestial objects listed to receive full credit. The more effort and creativity you show in your posts the more likely you are to receive full credit. Have fun!

Your whimpy professor has been sent to the hospital wing. Poor bloke could really use some cheering up and things to read, so why don't you make him a get well card? It would be stellar if you could incorporate the Big Bang Theory into it somehow

OOC: for the graphic makers among you, you can submit a graphic of your own design. If graphics are not your thing, you can submit a poem, a short story, etc. You have full creative range with this, so feel free to surprise me

You do NOT need to RP actually handing anything to Professor Flamsteed, but if you want to do so IC just nudge me and we can set something up <3

Go back to the Astrophysics Laboratory and finish making your Solar System. You should have a minimum of 5 planets and a Sun. You may make moons for your planets if you wish, but please do not exceed 6 planets for the time being. Additionally, you MAY need to take care of your Sun. Wouldn't hurt to show your entire Solar System some TLC (tender loving care) as well And remember, safety first! Always wear your lab coat and goggles.

To create a planet:

• select some foliage from one box
• pick a small stone from the other box
• add two scoops of iron to the mortar
• grind up the above three items into a powder
• perform Fingere Elementi

OOC: This is an RP assignment and must be completed in the Astrophysics Laboratory. You should have a minimum of 4 posts to be eligible for full credit. It is perfectly fine for your character to fail, have their sun die so they have to completely start over, make a planet go boom, etc. Just have fun with your RPing (within reason, of course ) No burning down the laboratory or anything, mmmk?

Draw a picture! This can be of your entire Solar System or your favorite planet among your creations.

OOC: For all you graphic makers out there! Please DO NOT submit a preexisting image found somewhere on the internet.

You may also pick ONE of the following for extra credit.

Write a 4 inch essay about your Solar System. In it you should name the planets and explain why you named them what you did. You may also include a description of what each of your planet looks like and what foliage you used in creating each one.

OOC:4 inches equals a short paragraph (at least 10 sentences).

Write TWO two inch essays on any TWO planets in our Solar System - excluding the Earth.

OOC: You can include whatever information you want including, but certainly not limited to, mythology about the planet, size ranking, time it takes to orbit the sun, and number of satellites. Two inches equals at least 5 sentences.

⌦ extra credit for up to 15 points
Do you think Pluto should still be a planet? Why or why not? You all know where I stand on the matter, but some of you seem very passionate about the topic.

Write a 5 inch essay supporting your theory. Once you have taken your stand, go about the school and hang up posters advertising that stance. You should place them somewhere where others will be sure to see them, but do not post them anywhere that will get you into trouble.

OOC: 5 inches equals two good paragraphs of at least 5 sentences each.

Posters should be graphics created by yourself (either hand drawn and scanned or made in an image editing program such as Paint or Adobe Photoshop.

To "hang up" your posters around the school, please RP your character hanging it up with either muggle methods or a Sticking Charm and include links to your post in your PM. You should have at least two of these (two posts and two different graphics)
