As you enter the room, the first thing you see in the middle of the room is a hand-made Turkish carpet and nothing else. To the immediate right of the door stands a coat hanger for four coats a time, and you are expected to hang your coat there before fully entering the room. Professor's desk and two chairs in front of it are located at the right end with three pictures hanging from the wall, and his bookcase and 'emergency potions' shelves with a representational potion brewing set are located at the left end of the room. The walls are painted light blue.
The desk and visitors' set look expensive, and they indeed are. They are from genuine mahogany, all cut from the same wood. There is usually a big pile of papers hastily arranged at the farther side of the desk, and you will always see a potion phial and a book on the more organised side. Behind it is his office chair, and in front of it are two comfortable looking armchairs with a coffee table between them. You'll find a bowl of sweets that is filled with cheering up potion that will last for approximately three hours. Go on, take a cherry, apple, orange or lemon flavoured. Be careful not to take the last lemon though, because they are his favourite.
To the right side of the wall behind the desk hangs a picture depicting a Mardin, Midyat house with smiling kids sometimes singing a song and sometimes playing a game. To the left is a painting depicting Afghanistan with an old wizard at the centre of it. He is brewing a mysterious potion and will be more than happy to speak to you in Persian, but he just smiles upon asking about what he is doing. He was a respected wizard of Afghanistan, and Professor Culloden paid a fortune for the painting, so act accordingly. Beneath them in the middle hangs a picture of Borneo rainforests with birds and insects. If you are lucky, you will be treated with a birds lullaby and if you are unlucky, the insects will drill your brains with their buzzing sound.
The middle is only occupied by a handmade Turkish rug. While you may step on it, you will land yourself in detention faster than you can say 'potion' if those shoes are muddy or wet.
At the other end of the room is a bookcase full of books about potions, both muggle and magical plants and animals. Don't be surprised if you see your professor's name on 3-4 of them. Depending on how much he likes you, he may lend them to you.
On the shelves next to the bookcase stands his golden, representational potions brewing set and a few phials full of different potions. Along with the carpet and pictures, the set is his most prized possession.
If you can find him in his office, you are 'okay' to pay a visit.

Knock.
His eyes grugdingly went to the door and he counted to ten before straightening up in his seat. Folding the newspaper, he grabbed his wand and waved it at the door to open it.
"Come in," he called from his table that was messy with papers already, but whoever came wouldn't dare a peek, right?
West went on in once he was invited, though he paused in the doorway for a moment and took in the changes. Seemed safe enough anyways, and you never knew with professors so it was sometimes good to look things over before stepping in. He eyed the coat rack but he was simply in shirtsleeves today so had no need for it. The tall Slytherin examined the rug underfoot and wondered idly if it was enchanted or not, but wasn't curious enough to ask like he might have when he was younger.
He noted the potions set next, the book case, and then each of the pictures in turn, and finally the desk, the chairs, and the professor himself.
He didn't presume to sit down and he didn't help himself to candy either. Free candy wasn't something West trusted, not after the whole ice cream thing a few years back and all that. The professor could've laced them with truth serum or anything after all.
He noted the papers on the desk but didn't try to snoop.
"Sorry to interrupt, sir." Sure but only because it might mean the dude would be grumpy and not actually because he felt bad. "I just had a question."

Cosgrach paid attention to first impression, so he kept a neutral face and waited patiently as the boy examined the room first. It was a wise thing to do either, in his opinion. Impressing the students wasn't his worry, but he also knew there was a huge difference between being loved and hated, and he wanted the first. Leaning forward slightly to show he was interested in what he had to say, he said "It's okay." That was a step to 'being respected', at least, that he should know he could 'interrupt' him within reason. He indicated the chairs in front of the table.
"Take a seat," he said next, "and ask away." He knew he should learn his name before anything else, but the boy looked too eager to ask his question.
A little startled from the scare the man had given her she closed her potions text book and jumped right up after him and followed into the office. She stopped and took off her outer robe and placed it onto the rack.
"What a beautiful carpet, professor." she said, admiring the patterns. She studied the rest of the room, it smelled familiar, like her flat back in London.

Now that he had permission to sit, West did.
"I'm West Odessa." He paused and then added, "Slytherin Captain." Yeah. "Professor Lafay always let us use the lab as much as we wanted for things, and I've been working on stuff in my own time every year, just because its fun and interesting and all that." The tall boy stretched his legs out a bit.
"I was hoping to be able to continue doing that without having to worry about getting permission every time, and I was hoping I could get access to some of the restricted ingredients if I need them, without having to jump through hoops and all that. I got an O on my potions OWL last term."
So essentially... "Can I?" Have free reign to do stuff?

The boy had a name now, and a title too. Cosgrach nodded and assumed he knew his name already, seeing he didn't give him a chance to introduce himself. That was fine. Titles never failed to impress him, but he did his best to hide it. He shouldn't favour students from the first week, after all.
"The lab's still there, open to free use between 8 AM and 9 PM. You just need to sign your name and date on the notebook," he said, but looked like his mind was on something else. He looked away from the boy for the first time then, and frowned slightly. Since when Quidditch Captains were this ambitious? Now, he approved of West Odessa even more.
"So you want permission to use the restricted ingredients without asking me every time too, right? And stay after 9 PM, if necessary?"

Name and date. Yeah he could handle that. West was watching this professor, trying to gauge reactions and stuff. Get a read on the guy. But he wasn't exactly an open book.
"That's right, sir." Nod. Pretty much that exactly.

"You can stay in the lab after 9 PM, then," Cosgrach said, but didn't answer the ingredients part that easily. See, for that, he needed more than 'I'm O-kid West Odessa, Slytherin Captain'. He leaned back and squited his eyes at him as if he was trying to read his mind. He wasn't that talented, sadly, but he wanted West to feel the pressure and responsibility, understand that he was examining him. He was silent for a while, then drew a deep breath and leaned forward.
"I don't want anyone else using them. Only you and no one else." Understood? "I don't want any boasting around either. I can't deal with other students' demands." He held his gaze in his most strict manner to show he wasn't joking. He didn't believe in threats, so he didn't speak about 'otherwise'. He just trusted Mr. Odessa was experienced from the previous years, under Lafay's guidence.

Cool. That was good. West nodded once in appreciation and then waited for the rest....
....
Normal adult stuff. Obvious stuff.
"Its nobody's business. If they want to do extra stuff they can ask permission as well." He wasn't gonna do the groundwork and then have someone else benefit, no way. Shrug. Nod. "Its understood, sir." He paused. "Do you need me to check in with you every now and then and let you know what I'm working on or anything?"

Cosgrach EYED him one last before before relaxing his muscles. Mr. Odessa looked to have understood him, so there was no need to create more tension. He nodded once but didn't comment further. He was going to watch him anyway.
"Please. Owling is fine too." But Slytherin Common Room was only a few paces from his office. He smiled and shook his head at his mistake. "You can ask for assistance anytime." He then grabbed his wand and waved it at the door to close it to avoid any eavesdroppers.
"The restricted ingredients are locked," he said in a lowered voice as he leaned closer to him, "so you need to tap your wand twice on the glass and say 'potion needed'. You take whatever you need, and just close the glass."
Simple and effective.

Given West had spent five years under Lafay's tutelage and a lifetime as his father's son, he was indifferent to stern looks and just accepted them without any particular alarm. Owling. Okay. Nod. No problem. Or he'd slip a note under the professor's door or whatever. The assistance thing was nice to know too so he nodded at that as well.
Oh. Secrets?
West leaned forward a bit too and watched the professor with his big blue Odessa eyes, intent.
"Tap my wand twice on the glass, say potion needed, take what I want and close the glass again. Okay." No problem. West nodded. He could do that.
"Thanks." Yep. That was all he wanted really.

Hawthorne smiled and checked her shoes before she walked across the carpet. She could hear the pride in the mans voice and didn't want to dirty it. Her shoes were fine. She sat down into the seat he had pointed.
"My name is Hawthorne Sweeney." she started. "Uhm... first year." she added uneasily, adding an awkward smile. She had never spoken to any of her professors until this point and she suddenly remembered people saying potions masters were always terrifying.
"I'm rather interested in potions. My father actually makes them for a living... he works out of our flat." she cleared her throat. "I am expected to get an O on my potions owl... and I know that requires a lot of work. I also know it's... five years away. But if I want it I need to start now." how must she sound to him? Certainly beyond her years, but she has had to take care of herself for so long since her father worked day and night at his cauldrons to keep them in a home.

Cosgrach leaned backwards again once he finished repeating what he had to do, and said "That's correct." He smiled again. "You're welcome, Mister Odessa." See, it was easy to win his... affection, so to speak. Now, to hope he didn't lose it.
"If you don't have anything else to discuss, could you please close the door after you leave?"

Unfortunately for her, Cosgrach missed when she checked her shoes, but he was already impressed with the care she was showing. He was also impressed how she wasn't too uncomfortable with his studying eyes, and just kept talking. That was a name he had to remember. Brave one, she was. He had nearly spent an hour looking for a toilet on his first day here, whereas Lady Sweeney was speaking to professors! Did that mean the new generation was clever? Could he hope that?
Her father was interested in potions? Sweet! Maybe he knew--
"Is he pressuring you, or are you here because you want to be?"

Hawthorne cleared her throat. "My father isn't really the 'pressuring' type." She formed air quotes around the buzz word. "He's kind of too busy to pressure me, but I've been around potions all my life, and I've helped him make them bunches of times. I really do like potions... I just want to be better. After all, if I get better I can help him by making potions by myself, and then he wont have to work as hard!" she ended the sentence with a nod.
She always wondered what it was like for other kids her age... kids with both parents who worked. Or both parents, period. But hey, it was her life. Could she ask for more?

Perfect. No fuss and no drama, permission received and West was done. He sure didn't have anything else. He stood up.

Whaa?
No hey, hi, or hello? Her grandmother would have never done THAT.
Nope. She'd at least have set fire to somebody or something. Sophie just looked up at the new guy and tried to meet his gaze as she passed through the doorway. When was she was inside, she just turned on her heels and faced him, not taking a seat. She'd at least wait to be offered one.
"So," she said, beginning the conversation a little more awkwardly than planned. She glanced around the office. This was NOT this man's office. Sigh. She knew she was just being silly. "Err, so my grandmother was the last Potions professor here, and I'm a little..." Sad? Yes, but that wasn't a word Sophie used to describe herself. It was too vulnerable. "...uneasy to see her go. I'm just really here to meet her replacement before the first class."

Well, it was good to know his father wasn't a pressuring dad--not because Cosgrach cared her psychology, but because he hated people that used potions to please others. He listened to her with great attention and nodded here and there to show he listened. That was another type of person he hated--people that didn't listen. Once she finished, he took a deep breath that promised words and leaned back in his seat.
"It's a relief to hear that you like potion without any influence." Did she get he had no time for people that just thought they liked it? "So you know the basics, I see." It wasn't a question, he was just talking to him. He looked away from her for the first time then, and stared at his library absent-mindedly. He was trying to form a plan, you see.
"I'll hold the first class tomorrow afternoon," he said at last, eyes back on hers, after a break to think. "Let's see there what you already know, and..."Merlin, was he really promising this? Truly? Someone wake him up from this BAD, BAD dream? "...then maybe we can work together after classes to teach you more." Yeah, maybe. No promises. She shouldn't get her hopes up at all.
"Report to my office after class tomorrow to discuss where you are and, possibly schedule extra... lessons at the laboratory with me. You are going to laboratory with me or with an older students at all times no matter how much you know potions this year, okay?" Because he didn't want his precious laboratory to be blown up by a first year.
Not that he didn't want to help her. He LOVED potions enthusiasts, the younger, the better. It was just...
She'd better be a sharp girl.

Cosgrach nodded at Mr. Odessa then, and got the Daily Prophet back again.
He was... had to inquire about him. He sure drew his attention.

So HI and stuff.
Cosgrach didn't notice the girl's slight awkwardness, but simply closed the door and remained on his foot until she finished her words. He figured those blue eyes promised something, combined with a Slytherin crest, and didn't interrupt her words to offer her a seat or sit himself. He was showing her his great respect by doing so, whether she was old enough to notice it or not. He wasn't looking at her so hostilely either, his face had relaxed into a mixture of curiosity and slight morning sleepiness.
SHE was Lafay's granddaughter?!
That was... shocking. His eyebrows were raised, his mouth slightly opened, and he offered his hand for a handshake.
"I'm Cosgrach Culloden, Miss," he said in a somewhat amiable tone. He wasn't mocking her either. If she wanted to meet, they were going to.
"Would you like to sit and try my candy? I added cheering up potion." He walked to his chair to sit. She could help herself with candy, if she wanted to.
"I'm not your grand--mother, clearly," he started with some hesitation, "so... what do you want to know? What are your expectations?" He was trying to make a girl comfortable because he wasn't her grandmother. The worst part was, he kind of wanted to? If that wasn't odd and he could manage it...
She followed in after the professor. He seemed well collected. "First of all, I heard your new, so welome to Hogwarts!" smile! "If it makes you feel any better, I just transfered here, so I just have some questions..." she smiled at the older man. Potions was and still is her favorite class. "Will there be any advanced coursework?" at her last school there wasn't any, but the teacher had let her work a large load. "I noticed the lab times don't run that late and often when I do potions, I get really in the zone...so I was wondering if so...could I possibly work later, I often work a little better alone or semi-alone." she asked, at her last school, she often worked late, she liked working with brewing and experimenting with potions. "Oh, and is there any other required textbooks (OOC: Any extra resources I can refer to)?" she asked curiously. "Oh, what are some of the forbidden ingredients here, and if I get your permisson, could I possibly use them?" she smiled even wider. "Sorry if I seem really excited, I just love potions!"

Merlin save 'em.
Sophie thought she saw his facial expression make a slight change for the better, but she couldn't be sure. She eyed him, waiting to see what he'd do next. He hadn't seemed to want company, which made her pay special attention to the way he remained standing.
Was he about to throw her out?!
Her grandmother would have never done that. Then his eyebrows raised, and he spoke. Sophie relaxed a little, visibly surprised he'd offered her candy. "Maybe," she said. She wasn't too sure she wanted to warm up to him just yet.
Expectations? She hadn't thought about that one yet. Hmm... "My grandfather says my grandmother is the best at Potions. I was really hoping to be taught by her," she admitted. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other. "My mom's a potions mistress, too. She co-owns GothSaints in Diagon Alley." She paused. So what were her expectations then? "Potions is just really important to my family. That's all."
So...where was that candy? She was sort of thinking about it now.
OOC: I'm not sure if your charrie knows GothSaints or not, but it exists in SS's DA. It's the Greingoth and Toussaint potions company mentioned here.
Although Cosgrach's smile wasn't half as enthusiastic as hers, it was a smile nevertheless, because he wasn't rude. No, it didn't make him feel any better to know she was a transfer too, because he was a MAN and, no offence kid, but he wasn't even at the same level with her. He didn't share his thoughts though, and let her finish before moving to his chair. He only closed the door in the process, and took his time taking his coat off, hang it, and move to his chair before answering her.
"Take a seat?" he asked, showing the armchairs in front of his table, "and help yourself to candy. You will feel good." He smiled cordially. Was she excited! Cosgrach looked distracted for a moment, but he collected himself and fixed his gaze on her.
"I don't think I caught your name, house or year. I'm Cosgrach Culloden, if you don't know already."
He was giving it to her excitement. Yeah. Or else she would have remembered to introduce herself.
Yeah.

Was he about to throw her out?!
Her grandmother would have never done that. Then his eyebrows raised, and he spoke. Sophie relaxed a little, visibly surprised he'd offered her candy. "Maybe," she said. She wasn't too sure she wanted to warm up to him just yet.

Maybe? And she wasn't even going to sit? Cosgrach thought about insisting, but it was her choice, after all. He had asked her to sit once. Although it was going to be hard for him to speak to her while he was sitting down, it would be too much to get up for her either.
Children. Did they enjoy causing discomfort or what?
He didn't know Lafay personally, but he had had the impression that she... wasn't the type to commit and have grandchildren, to put it mildly, so he bet his shock equalled her reluctance to work with him. This also explained how this sweet girl came to visit him as soon as she was out of the bed. It was called getting soft, and it was yuck.
But of course Lafay's husband thought so! Cosgrach looked away, the back at her. "I can't compare myself with Miss--Mrs. Lafay," nor did he want to, "but I can promise you will learn potions well." Merlin, even Annie hadn't questioned him this hard!
"And you could... possibly... I don't know Mrs. Lafay's side but... study with her during holiday and such."
She--she needed advice, right? Maybe his subconsciousness was just trying to impress the daughter of GothSaints? Maybe? So that he didn't sound that pathetic trying to convince a little girl of his potion skills?

Yeah.
"Nice to meet you, Professor Culloden, I'm Cara Gallaway. I'm a fourth year in Hufflepuff. Sorry, I must've forgotten over my excitement for the school year..." she trailed off, noticing how excited she was. She took a seat and grabbed a piece of candy, she figured he had laced a potion into it. It was still quite tasty and she smiled, she felt really good now.

Please?!
Okay, so Sophie was starting to relax and get the impression that this man wasn't out to make her year miserable after all. She drew in a small breath and released a quiet sigh. Finally, she moved toward the chair and sat down. "Okay, so I think I'll have some of that candy," she said. Did she just help herself to it, or was he going to pass her a serving?
Mrs. Lafay. UGH. The loss of the word 'Professor' just made it seem so final.
He was promising her she'd learn well? Okay, then. She guessed she could let her guards down a little. "Okay," she said with a nod. "So, what's your favorite potion?" It was just an answer from a curious mind. She wondered what sort of brews they'd be doing this year.
"Oh, we visit her a lot," she said, moving with the conversation. "Daddy built her a lab in their house." Daddy was what she called her grandfather, of course. No confusion there, hmm? So, umm... "Thank you for talking to me about this." He really didn't have to, but it was assuring.

Cosgrach nodded politely. He waited for her to take a piece of candy, and only then did he answer her questions.
"Okay, Ms. Gallaway," he said, hands folded on his table as he was leaned forward slightly to converse with her better, "I understand your concerns about working alone, but you can be sure that I won't let anyone horse around in the lab anyway. I give you 13 hours to work there. That's more than enough for all the potions a fourth year may want to brew." He paused to hear if she had something to say, then added "You should be in your common room at 9 PM anyway, I should remind you. It's the curfew hour for fifth years and up." So he wasn't going to let fifth years or up after that time too if she was wondering. He wasn't threatening her in any way as his voice was normal, but it was clear he wouldn't tolerate students that broke rules too much.
He remembered all the questions she had asked him, but he wanted to discuss them one by one to leave no doubts on her mind.

Cosgrach was no expert on body language, but he could tell he gained her trust somehow. She wanted some candy at least, and that was a positive sign.
Had he already run out of candy in the bowl? With a confused frown, he got up from his chair and leaned forward across his desk to see the coffee table in front of her. Oh, good. She would get to pick lemon, cherry, orange or apple flavoured. "It's right there in the bowl," he said as he pointed to it with his left hand. "Take as much as you would like."
Good? Okay? Fantastic. Cosgrach was relieved too, although he tried not to show it. He didn't want her to get all arrogant like 'I worried Professor,' and use it to her advantage.
"Felix Felicis," he said without hesitation. Who didn't like liquid luck? "Do you have a favourite?"
Oh, good. So she COULD still work with her. That took off the last bit of pressure. Now he was sure she wouldn't throw a tantrum and demand her grandmother.
"That's great, then," he said with a polite smile. It really was.
"That's why I'm here," he said with a soft smile--for student comfort. He was a teacher. Merlin. It had a... weird sound.
"I don't think you've told me your name." Or grade. Or year. She also didn't shake his offered hand too, come to think about it. Well, he was just going to assume she had been too anxious to notice it, and not hold it against her.
Because t...eachers didn't hold grudges against anxious little girls like her.
Hawthorne smiled. "Thank you so much, professor. I'll be there!" her smile turned into a Cheshire Cat grin. She was too excited for the first potions class of the year, and the possibility that she could learn even more? Outrageous! "I'll try not to disappoint."

Yes, Sophie had seen the candy, but just up and taking some after that long period of hesitation just didn't sit right with her. Now that he'd pointed it out, it just seemed so much more appropriate. Take all she wanted? Okay, then. She reached up and grabbed the entire bowl, paused, then put it back down. "Just kidding," she said with a grin. She put the bowl back down and grabbed two pieces of candy. "Thank you."
Now the ice could be considered broken.
She raised her eyebrows at the sound of his favorite potion. "Felix Felicis," she replied back. That was her favorite, too. "Will we be brewing it?" That would be AWESOME if so.
So..., this was the point in time where introductions happened, now that the ice had been broken at all. Sophie ahem'ed. "Sophie Newell," she said, extending her hand. "Second year Slytherin." She paused before adding, "Welcome to Hogwarts, sir." Pause. "...and to Potions."
