The Black Lake lies behind the castle and though it may seem like the water is calm on the surface, you will learn that that is not the case underwater. Creatures have made it their home from Merpeople to Grindylows. The most notable is Bartholomew Henry, the Giant Squid. The lake is a beautiful place for you to hang out.
Mr.Kirby has built a dock and has supplied it with some fishing rods. The lures have been charmed to prevent any magical creatures of the lake from getting hooked. The Groundskeeper will not tolerate any use of live bait, and is running a strict CATCH and RELEASE policy. Failure to follow these two rules will result in serious consequences.

"Lignum Navicula!" he exclaimed, tapping the lumber he'd brought with him and watching as it transfigured itself into a beautiful boat. Ah, so HE was just as good at this as Sophie was! First try WOOOT!
"...because I mastered it in class," Sophie said with a grin. It was sort of like knowing something like the back of her hand by now. She was just about to try and show off by doing the next spell on the first try, too, when Caleb went and did that very same thing. Hmm...no use in trying to show off now. "See, you got it on the first try, too." He was a Greingoth/Newell. Of course he got it on the first try.
Sophie placed the sticks in front of her then raised her wand. "Lignum Navicula!" she said with a tap. The sticks began to thicken and then spread out. Pretty soon, she, too, had a boat. "Okay, so let's test this out. You want to hop in my boat, and I'll hop in yours? We can tie our ropes to trees and try and pull ourselves back to shore."
"You did it!" Mo accepted her high five with a proud grin. Probably Sophie would have been able to figure it out on her own, and probably she didn't need his help, but he liked to think that he had in some way contributed to her success. Maybe he didn't teach her anything, but the pep talk surely had done some good. Surely.
"I think your boat is better than mine," Mo picked them both up and examined them from hull to bow and back again. He wanted to put a sail on his. A sail and an anchor and maybe a monkey to drive it around the lake. "I wish there was a way to race them, but I suppose for today we should be happy with merely floating them without getting waterlogged.
He took the few steps down the beach necessary to reach the water, and then Mo set his boat right into the shallow water. It wibbled and wobbled back and forth, coming perilously close to taking on water a few times before it slowly righted itself to sit upright in the water. Just like it was supposed to do. Mo save it a little shove out into the lake, and the bow parted the water like a knife through butter as it slid out into the lake.
"It's totally not, but thanks for trying to make me feel better," Sophie grinned, watching Mo examine both of the boats carefully. "Maybe we can find a way to charm 'em or something to race 'em later on." She didn't know if that was possible, even, but she liked the idea of it.
It was a bit of a struggle to stand up, her lower back muscles tight with tension that made her bite her tongue as she rose so she didn't wince in pain. Soooooooore. She was going to sleep well tonight.
Giving a nice big stretch, Sophie tucked her wand away and followed Mo over to the lake with her boat in hand. She watched the captain do his first, curious to see how his picture-perfect boat would hold up - she let out a soft "oooooo" when the little thing came dangerously close to picking up some water as it tilted - then she clapped on the back of her hand holding the boat. "Nice," she admired, crouching down at the water's edge carefully and veeeeeery cautiously setting her boat on the water. She held onto it for a long moment, trying to hold it still and straight up to encourage it to stay that way - then she pulled her hand away. The boat wobbled a little side-to-side, as if it was testing its own limits, and Sophie held her breath. Slowly but surely, the boat came as close to rest as it could in response to the soft ripples pushing toward it from Mo's boat.
She snatched it back up, wiping it dry on the grass, and watched Mo's boat, an amused smile playing upon her lips. "Didn't Bellaire say we need these for the next lesson?"
She smiled at him and looked at her, "Oh well... I can actually show you..." Er, that probably sounded odd... but she gently pulled her bag to her and found her old picture of her sister.
"I'm fine just..." She gave a weak smile and tried to force herself to calm down, "I'm being a bit of an idiot..." Anna gave a weak laugh, "Guess that's what you get without much of a social life for five years huh?" Maybe she was trying to get off the topic before she acted like even more of an idiot.
*She carried a picture of her sister? Romulus didn't carry one of Jacen around. But then again Anna got along with her sister where as Jacen and Romulus tolarated each other. Looking over at the picture he nodded.*

Yeah, they DID do it. Together. As a team. Would Bellaire be impressed by this? ... He didn't know. He, however, was going to make some very excited notes on this little practice.

Mo wasn't about to admit it, but Sophie had a point. A good one, too. He frowned at his boat that was drifting perfectly away from them. Such a good little boat, and he'd just sent it away just to show off to the second year beside him. Sigh. Sometimes being awesome was such a burden.
He muttered dark things as he toed off his boots and socks, then plunged into the water after his boats. The water was only a foot or so deep in the spot he caught up to the boat, but that was still about a foot of his trousers that were now bitterly cold and clinging to his ankles. At least he had his boat, right?
"C-c-cocoa?" Mo's teeth were chattering as he tugged on his socks and shoes again, boat clutched awkwardly under one arm. "Let's go inside."

...Sophie STARED as Mo plunged into the water after his boat, mouth hanging open and all. "Isn't that freezing?" His poor feet. Couldn't he have tried to accio it or whatever? She hadn't learned that one yet and wasn't entirely sure how it worked, but it made sense to her that he could've done that. But... now that he was soaking and freezing and coming back onto the beach, Sophie didn't have the heart to ask him if it had been a viable option.
Instead, she tucked her own boat and rope under her arm and offered to take his to put it under her other arm, making grabby motions with her hand as she started slowly toward the castle. "Cocoa sounds good. Do you know the hot air charm? Or something like that you could use to help? If I carry your boat, you could try it on your pants and shoes to try to relieve some of the cold and wetness." Just trying to help.

"You two look a lot alike. And you have more of a social life than I do."
"You think?" She smiled weakly at the photo, "I don't think anyone else has ever said that..." Anna gave a slight sigh, thinking about Anastasia and how much she missed her little sister, "It feels odd... She was my little shadow for five years and now... I'll probably never see her again..." She slid the photo back into it's place and looked down.
She gave a slight laugh to what he said, "Hardly... Only three people I really talk to here are you, Kace, and my best friend Mel."
Yeah, they DID do it. Together. As a team. Would Bellaire be impressed by this? ... He didn't know. He, however, was going to make some very excited notes on this little practice.

Botros nodded, his grin still plastered on his face, "No problem. You're a good kid, Summers." He worked this out on his own, Botros was just here for moral support. Oh yes, reverto was fairly easy. "Alright." If he said so.
Though the professor was definitely going to stay and watch the Head Boy go-- not go into the boat. Ab laughed and hooked an arm around Alec's neck, patting his shoulder with the other hand; With the boy graduating soon, it was only fair to treat him as a young adult friend, right? "Are you scared of the little Giant squid?" Yes, the contradiction wasn't lost on him. "You don't have to. But maybe in the future, you'll try and transfigure a big enough boat to sail in with your loved ones?" Like friends, of course. He might be a young adult, but he was still a kid for having a loved one. Heh heh heh.
Botros took his cane off the boat then. "Well, have a nice day, son!"
"You think?" She smiled weakly at the photo, "I don't think anyone else has ever said that..." *Romulus felt bad for Anna. He would feel bad too if someone he was that close to was suddenly gone.*
"Never say never. If you two were that close while young I am sure that you will see each other again."
*Looking out over the lake he saw a tentacle slide back into the lake. All the crisps were now gone.*

"Well, if Mom and Dad have their way I'll never see her again... That was the deal when I took her back to them. If she lived with them, I could never be around her again..." She sighed slightly, fighting back her look of sadness. Her head went up slightly as Henry went back under the water, and just shrugged it off.

He walked back to her boat and lightly put one foot onto the edge of it. Ok. So far so good. "Here, hold this for me, will you? So I don't fall...and then I'll paddle over to my boat and hold it for you while you hop on," he said. That way, no one fell in the water by SLIPPING rather than, you know, a faulty boat, which was the only reason they should fall in Caleb's opinion.

Okay, so the plan was in action now apparently. Caleb was also on a roll, which momentarily left Sophie scrambling to catch up. She watched as he stepped into her boat and attached a rope to a nearby tree. "Yup, got it," she said, taking a hold of the paddle.
It only now occurred to her that her brother may not have done the spell correctly. HER boat she was sure of. What if he'd messed up, though? She frowned as she realized that she should have suggested this the other way around. Her in HER boat and Caleb in HIS boat.
Oh, well. Too late now. "Ready when you are," she said.

Alright, onto the boat and no accidents that involved him the lake. AWESOME. Caleb grinned and paddled over a few feet to where his boat was sitting, waiting for Sophie. He grabbed the edge of it and steadied it so she could board and looked at her with a smile. "Alright, all aboard!" he said with a grin.

After transfiguring the wood in a boat, Astrid went over to the Black Lake. Well, she had to try it out if it was working or not because they will be needing it for the next class in Transfiguration. Maybe they'll be riding them across the lake or something which was super duper duper duperrrrrrrrr cool.
Also, she wasn't sure if Asher was following her or something. He had to try his boat too, just in case. Once Astrid reached the lake, she carefully placed her boat on the water. Okay, so she did close one eye just in case. She was kinda nervous about the outcome. She didn't wanna do it all over again. That was too much effort. She had done enough. No need to exhaust herself. Yeah.
She opened her closed eye and... YUSSS FISTPUMP IN THE AIR. It was floating. She actually made a boat that actually FLOATED. "Yeah!" Who's awesome now? She was. Ahem. Yeah.

Sophie began by securing her rope, or...Caleb's rope that she was going to use...to another nearby, sturdy tree. She raised one foot toward the boat then paused. She eyed Caleb. Slytherins were very untrusting, especially of each other, but he was her brother. He was forever on her team, right?! Plus, he'd never let her down. Not yet. She continued the step into the boat then paused to check the sturdiness of it. Seemed good so far.
She finished getting into the boat, then sat down and secured the paddle in her hand. "Okay, so let's just ride out, float a bit, and then pull ourselves back in," she said. She wasn't much of a boater. "I'll beat ya out there!" Of course she had to make it into a competition. GRIN. She started paddling on that note.

"Sounds good!" Caleb called before grinning and paddling full speed into the lake. He figured he'd go as far as the rope allowed and stopped. He was not going to let Sophie beat him! He paddled and paddled, while looking down at his feet to make sure no water was leaking into the boat or anything like that. So far, so good!
"Your boat is holding up really well, Sophie!" he called as he kept going. He was still going to beat her, he knew it!! He didn't care if the boat collapsed and he was riding on one board, he'd WIN!
Then, suddenly, he reached the end of the rope. The boat JERKED to a stop and he felt down, dropping the paddle as he flew down to the dock of the boat in what was probably a very hilarious fashion.

Sophie could hear Caleb's agreement coming from somewhere behind her. Heh. She was going to beat him, of course! She continued paddling at full speed, using all her arm strength to get her out there as quickly as possible. Too bad there wasn't a spell for this...
She grinned at the sound of his compliment. Of course her boat was holding up well. SHE'D made it, after all. Come to think of it, though... "So is yours," she said.
BUT WAIT.
Nooooo!!! It only occurred to Sophie after she'd given him that compliment that his voice was now coming from IN FRONT of her. Her rope jerked to a screeching halt, and she stopped beside Caleb who'd gotten there a second before her. "Well, it was obviously because you're using MY boat and rope," she said. Sigh. She needed to congratulate him. "Just kidding. Congrats, little bro."

Alright, time to go back into shore...ugh, this was going to hurt his arms. He grabbed the rope and began to pull himself back to shore, wondering WHY they had created such long ropes out of these vines.
"Well, at least we know that if we are ever stranded, we'll be able to survive," he chuckled. Like they'd ever be stupid enough to get stranded somewhere, though.

Why did this leaf hate her? What was she doing wrong?
"Okay, let's try this," Tessa said, coming to stand next to Lux. She could see the younger girl was getting frustrated with the spell and leaf. Frustration was counterproductive to spell work. "Okay, take a deep breath first and start over," she told the younger girl with a smile. "When you do the circle with your wand, make it a little tighter. That way, it's a bit more firm and clean," she explained. "And, if you want your leaf to dance, just tell it aloud to dance!" she said with a warm smile.
Leah bounced down the sloppy lane and landed with a painful thud at the edge of the black lake. She was about to do her homework with Gwen.
Pulling out her wand, broken pieces of wood and a thick rope, Leah set them down on her lap and flipped through her journal. She remembered that she had written down the incantations on her journal. "Did you manage to do it during class last time? I half did, though I don't know whether it was someone else's wrong aim." She did get a terrible looking half boat half wood which she threw away immediately.
Uh oh. Was she okay? She didn't seem to be hurt, so Gwen joined her new friend sitting on the grass. She grinned. "Yeah, pretty sure that's how you say it." She had sort of managed to do it in class. Like, her vine had changed colors and gotten a little sturdier, and her chunk of wood had warped its shape into something that might float.
She'd forgotten already. "Which is tap and which is point?" She had an inkling that if she did the wrong one it wouldn't turn out the way she wanted it to.
Gwen shrugged. "They changed a little, but I wouldn't call it a rope and a boat." So no, Gwen was not that smart, but she needed someone to work with, because doing this alone would be lonely.

She was. Ahem. Yeah.
So there he was with his newly transfigured boat walking out to the lake to try it out. Asher was following close behind Astrid but not too close. He was out of breath before they had gotten out into the grounds. Why was she moving so fast. The lake wasn't going anywhere. Would it float or would it sink? He hoped it would float. That would be great.
Once he got to the edge of the lake he waited for Astrid to try hers out first. Ladies first. Plus she seem way to excited. He watched as she let her boat out to test its floating talents. Was it... was it..... It did it was floating! "Great job."
Now it was his turn he walked up close to the shore of the lake. He placed it on the water. He watched and waited. Was.It.Going.To.Float? It.... was...... floating. Yes...success. Who's the man? Me. "Booyah!" He jumped for joy. He was going to get a good grade on this assignment. For sure. More points for Slytherin. Yay.

"Well, if Mom and Dad have their way I'll never see her again... That was the deal when I took her back to them. If she lived with them, I could never be around her again..." She sighed slightly, fighting back her look of sadness. Her head went up slightly as Henry went back under the water, and just shrugged it off.
"They can't keep you two apart forever. What about when you two get older? What about when you are both adults? What then?"
*The idea of Anna never seeing her sister again is less likely then she thinks.*

"Ready to try again?"
Right, deep breaths.
She needed to stay calm, or it would never work. "Okay, Tessa. I will try that." Breathing in and out slowly, she waited until she was calmer before trying again. Making sure that she did the circle tighter, she performed the Piertotum Locomotor spell. "Dance leaf!"
Before her eyes, it started doing what she instructed it to. "Look, Tessa!"
