The Black Lake lies behind the castle and though it may seem like the water is calm on the surface, you will learn that that is not the case underwater. Creatures have made it their home from Merpeople to Grindylows. The most notable is Bartholomew Henry, the Giant Squid. The lake is a beautiful place for you to hang out.
Mr.Kirby has built a dock and has supplied it with some fishing rods. The lures have been charmed to prevent any magical creatures of the lake from getting hooked. The Groundskeeper will not tolerate any use of live bait, and is running a strict CATCH and RELEASE policy. Failure to follow these two rules will result in serious consequences.

Or not. That expression said otherwise. Alice wrinkled her nose and turned back to her vine, which had thickened and toughened and twisted itself into a piece of rope around the size of the starting material. Was there any way to test if they had become strong enough?
But that might have been unnecessary, seeing as vines were rugged, too. So she'd just wait for West. Yeah.
West just continued grinning to himself all smug and whatnot. Yeahhhh. She could roll her eyes and wrinkle her nose as much as she wanted but she knew things. She did.
His own vine rope was looking good but why not test it in a fun way?
"Lets make lassos and try get those boats and bunnies back." He suggested, already looping his up. Fun yes? He made brows at her. "Unless you don't think you can do it." A challenge, Gryffindor.

As long as all the ingredients were in there and it was mixed properly, everything was fine. Right? "Just trust me" he smiled. Surely it wasn't too hard for her to do.
Oh no. She wasn't throwing him in! Terry didn't want to get wet, he was wearing his favourite jeans. "That's not going to happen" he warned her, taking a step further away from the waters edge. Yeah, this was a safe enough distance, he hoped. And surely she wouldn't have the strength to push him in anyway? Everything would work out perfectly fine, nothing to worry about.
He shrugged and nodded at her suggestion of him going first. "Yeah okay" he spoke, reaching into his backpack and pulling out the vial which contained his freshly brewed potion. He unscrewed the top, inspecting the contents briefly before tipping it into his mouth. Eurgh. Well that wasn't the best tasting potion he'd ever tried. The Slytherin pulled a face as the liquid swoshed around his mouth. He wasn't supposed to swallow, right?
What was next?
"But I still get covered in flower." She looked amused by smug Terry though. It was interesting and all. Sure, she could trust him. Friends trusted friends after all.
He did realize he didn't have to be near the lake to be thrown in? He didn't even have to be thrown, he could be levitated, seeing how Dora wasn't prone to actual physical violence of the muggle nature, and she was sure that's what throwing someone in a lake would be considered. She'd just levitate him, which she was more than capable of doing.
Dora waited expectantly.
".....You're supposed to breath that on me now."

Yep. No idea.
"Lassos?" That was probably the most ridiculous thing she'd ever heard... so naturally, the seventh year was up for it. "Can we enlarge the rope a bit, though? She wasn't going to let him live that down was he? She had to admit it was hilarious fun and the produce that came out the baking session was pretty outstanding, even if he did say so himself. "That's just finicky details" the Slytherin shrugged it off. Perhaps she looked better with a dusting of flour.
Urgh, why did potions never taste appetizing? Couldn't they just throw some flavourings, vanilla perhaps just to liven up the taste. In fact, chilli would be better than this stuff. He looked at Dora as she instructed him on what to do. These homework tasks always were a little odd, mimicking a Dragon was certainly not what Terry thought would happen at school. It was interesting to say the least and the uses of the potion were probably quite unique but still, in order for it to work you had to act like a fire breathing mythical beast.
He opened his mouth and breathed gently on the Ravenclaw prefect wrinkling his nose as he did so, waiting for some form of reaction. He closed it after a few seconds only to open up again when he asked a question. "So, what did that feel like?" he asked. Did he need to write this down anywhere as written proof? "Other than a bit odd." Because surely that would be her first response. "Am I supposed to record this anywhere?" he asked her. Surely she'd know the homework task, unlike Terry who had rushed out with his potion vial and his notebook and quill without even thinking of checking the noticeboard before he left. Jackpot.
So they had arranged to meet at the Black Lake with their wands, vines and wood since they needed the water in their testing anyway. The second year slipping everything into his satchel and making his way down when it was time, looking out for the older boy. Thankfully he was recognizable, Bay situated near the water's surface. "Hey..." he greeted as he came up beside him, taking his own seat upon the grass. "How well have you been at the spells?" His own work had been...okay.
Bay was in his own little world going over and over his spells when he heard a "hey". When he looked up he saw his partner Ben. But first he tied one corner of the napkin to the top end of one stick and the other corner to the bottom of the stick. Then he stretched out the napkin and tied the other corners to the top and bottom ends of the second stick. He was now holding up the sail.
"Now we can use the shrinking spell to reduce the size of this contraption." Leaning forward, he waved his wand in a V shaped and said the words to the incantion, "Reducio". A purple beam of light streamed out of wand and over the makeshift sail and right before their eyes it began to shrink.
When it got down to the size that fit Lux's boat, Sander ended the shrinking spell. Now all he had to do was attach the sticks to the boat. Tapping the bottom end of one stick to the boat, Sander said the incantation to the Sticking Charm,"Adhaero" and lo and behold the stick was now attached to the boat. He repeated the steps with the second stick before sitting back.
"Here's your sail boat, Lux," Sander handed the boat back to Lux.
It was a relief that Sander and Tessa weren't mad at her for being upset - in fact they didn't fault her at all - but that did not really help her feel totally better about the whole situation. Even though she was only 12, she should be more adult and deal with things better. Sometimes it was hard though, especially when she thought someone who meant a lot was forgetting about her, and Lux really looked up to Tessa. Watching her and Sander work on her sail, she tried not to feel bad anymore, but it was hard when they were being so nice to her after she had walked away from them.
"Thank you so much, guys. I'm sorry I was such a big baby." Taking the boat back from Sander, she admired the amazing job they had done. Wow, her boat looked even more awesome now. "I want to race now!"

"I guess, why not?" West lengthened his vine rope in silence, he'd already looped the end and knotted it appropriately, so he was definitely ready. Maybe just.... yeah. "Carpe Retractum." He cast out at his boat just to drag it in a small way... not all the way, just enough to be able to reach with the vine rope.
As long as his aim was alright anyways.
West stood up and put his wand away. Vine rope at the ready. He wound up and tossed the lasso out, aiming for the boat... and missing. Just. It touched it but didn't get around it. The bunny stared at him and shivered but otherwise didn't react to the strange series of events.
Try again then. He wound up and tossed the looped end out.

Dora shrugged. Details where details.
And she could think of more fun things worth getting covered in things for.
When he started breathing on her, she closed her eyes to completely focus on the sensation, opening them a few moments after and looking a bit puzzled and thoughtful. "Why would it be odd?" She couldn't think of a reason for it to be. "The summer prior to last, me and Theo went to the dragon reservation in Wales. And we got to see some juvenile dragons up close. The really young ones can't breath fire just yet, but they can still breath and stuff. It was kind of like that. Being breathed on by a baby dragon." Dora realized that he'd probably never been breathed on by a baby dragon and paused to consider another analogy.
"It was like being breathed on by the sun." Basically.

"It was like being breathed on by the sun." Basically.
Terry nodded along to Dora's description of what it felt like quite interested in the way she was describing it. Using the Dragon analogy was a brilliant way to keep the sixth year intrigued, he his sister and his mother had also visited a Dragon reserve, only this one was abroad. "I like that description" he nodded along, impressed but it was clearly a very Ravenclaw thing to say. He expected no less.
But then Dora decided to change her description and he tilted his head slightly confused. "I'm more likely to know what a baby dragon breathes like than I am the sun" he chuckled. In fact the sun didn't breathe, did it? "My mum was the Department Head for Magical Creatures. She takes me to a lot of places when I'm not at school. Including a Dragon Reserve like you said" he stated matter-of-factly. "And to be perfectly honest I felt like a baby dragon breathing all over you." In some ways Terry was looking forward to going home at Christmas, just so he could go on 'holiday' with his mother.
Right. So now was it Dora's turn?
"You want to try?" he questioned. Although there was no real 'want'. If she wanted the credit for doing the homework, which he was sure she would, she would have to.

Judging by the answer he was given, Ben had the feeling that his partner might just be having the type of struggle that he was having. The one where there was some success but not clear cut enough that it was an easy thing to do. Which the second year guess was appropriate as the homework was to practice it until they had it down pat meaning they weren't really supposed to be geniuses with the spells just yet. He nodded in understanding, taking his notes out where he had written down the incantations.
"Alright," he agreed. Looking down at what he had written, the Gryffindor worked on remembering what was what. The important first step to learning them properly. "There was lignum navicula which created the boat out of the wood and then vinea funiculus which changes vine into rope. I got more practice with the second one in class." Ben didn't know why he admitted that when it wasn't necessary. Oh well.
*That was a little confusing to hear. Someone thought that he was fun? She must just be saying that to be nice, he thought. His family had told him a number of times that watching paint dry was more fun that Romulus. Her next comment made him chuckle a little as he shook his head.*
"No way. I'm nothing like my brother. He plays sports I see them as rather dull. I'm good at school work, he was popular with girls and stuff. Pretty much anything Jacen is I'm the opposite. Always been that way."
"Well if he's the opposite of you then he must be pretty mean then... You've been nothing but a nice guy to me." Anna smiled and nodded slightly, "So, I'm happy I got to meet you and not him." She smiled at him.
She looked at him and gave a small laugh, "Well... you're popular with this girl." Anna gave a weak smile at first then looked away slightly, blushing like mad suddenly. No, no... She just probably just screwed up saying that.

Lengthening her rope as well so she could loop and knot it after, Alice waited for him to try his luck with the lasso first. Even though he hadn't managed to catch his boat, his lasso caused a little unrest in the water, seemingly enough to push her own wood creation within reach.
Her turn then? She wound up her lasso and threw it out towards her boat, determined to get her boat back first. Challenges, you know. They had funny effects on Gryffindors. And her lasso DID loop around the boat, but not properly. The only result of her attempt to pull it back was a very startled looking bunny falling into the water.
Bunny in the lake. In the... what? Lake? Was he going to go save it?
"West. West!" Bunny. Urgent pointing happening over here.

Alright this was going great, thank goodness for Ben.. if it wasn't for his partner he would be so lost. "okay…. so Lignum Navicala…. no that didn't sound right… Lignum Na--- gah how would you pronounce the last part.. I don't think I'm saying it right?" he said, Bay had the first part down but he was getting a little frustrated with the second part, where he almost kicked his wood away from him. "Sorry.. pronunciation is not my strongest suit." he gave a little laugh.

Excited that it was time for them to start racing, Lux bounced while making sure that her boat would not fall to the ground and potentially get damaged which would ruin all the fun. Heading over towards the shore so that they could get started, she thought of the questions that both Sander and Tessa had asked her.
"I think I want to use the wind as is what happens with most sail boats." Placing her boat down on the bank, she situated it in what she thought would be a good spot to get maximum benefit from the blowing wind. Fortunately, it was moving away from the shore, so she would not have any problems with it; otherwise, she would have asked Sander how to make it more with magic. "I want to know how you make boats move with magic, Tessa," she added in reply to her question.

On the other hand, the lioness seemed to have not decided on a design yet. Cassia arched an eyebrow at her. Picky much? Yet she refused to test it! Psht, talking about odds. "It wouldn't hurt to test it, miss-I-haven't-decided-on-a-design-yet," she replied poking Lex in the arm playfully as she carried the boat and stepped closer to the lake.
She was going to test it, OK?! She'd feel better. Besides they weren't in a rush. Squatting by the water, the sixth-year lowered the boat and placed it on the surface then let go of it. She waited for a bit peering closer and frowned down at it as water started seeping into it. HA! See! That was necessary.
"Reverto," She muttered after dragging it out of the water. Now focusing again and harder hopefully. Same design and without holes. "Lignum Navicula!" There! It was a bit different but had the same general shape. She was satisfied.
What was Lex saying? No change of clothes? "Hopefully his won't get wet and if it happened anyway we could just dry it?" Magic, duh. She actually was worrying about the drowning part more. But that wouldn't happen with them around, right?! Riiiiiiiiiight.
Leaving her boat by the water, the snake walked over to the kid and picked him up from the rock then set him on the ground. "Ready to ride a boat?" she beamed at him pulling at his hand closer to where she left the boat.

He nodded happily to her question. Did she know that he could swim? And his uncle was teaching him to surf as well, so he loved the water.
"Ready!!" He said happily as she took his wand.
The fact that Cassia was trying to reassure her of the theory not being that hard wasn't at all that comforting, in case the girl was wondering. With Cassia it was different. They practically lived in the library, much to her horror and disdain but Lex was willing to do anything to help her bestie. This time things were different. It was HER and they both knew the girl didn't read.
Lex gave some serious looks to the latest of her boat designs. It was something she was pleased with afterall but Cassia was making the point that she couldn't make up her mind about this which was kinda true...? What if she wanted a different design completely???
"Testing will happen...just...on him. Look at his eager little face. I doubt he'll mind one bit." Seriously, kids his age didn't complain about much. And of course her bestie was making all the good decisions today. "Right, a few heating charms should do the trick for sure." She said with a contemplative nod and a glance in the kid's direction.
OOOHHHH, they were testing now??? Lex began rummaging around in her bag for the strip of vine. She had the perfect use for this. "Vinea Funiculus!" A spell she'd practised so many times in class that it could have been a sin for her to not get it right!!! The Gryffindor grinned and held the now rope out for Cassia. "I say we tie him into the boat, just in case he's one of those kids who can't keep all hands and feet inside at all times." Just look at him. He looked like the chocolate frogs had gone to his head with all the bounce in him.
"I think we'll need your rope too." Lex said after taking in the scene before them. "He can ride in yours and tug mine along." That way they could test both at once. With her room keeping him in the boat and Cassia's keeping hers attached to the boat Bentley was in.

"Lux do you want to use the wind to sail your boat, or animate it to move like we both did? If so we need to teach you another spell which creates a wind that will blow against your boat's sail and push it along. For that spell, all you need to do is concentrate on creating a wind gust, but make sure it's not a great big one. We don't want all our boats to get blown away. Then point your wand at the sail of the boat and say "Ventus". Tessa why don't you show her how it works,"Sander grinned over at Tessa.

Tessa nodded to Sander and turned her attention to the younger girl. "Okay Lux, ready?" she asked smiling. She slid the sleeves of her shirt back away so that Lux would be able to see the way her hands and wrists moved. "I'm going to help you with that, watch me carefully, then I'll explain what I did," she said, turning away from the lake so that she wouldn't accident send the boats without meaning to.
"I'm going to show you Piertotum Locomotor," she explained. "This spell can be used to animate an object so that it will follow your commands. For example," Tessa focused on the leaves on the ground nearby. Holding the wand out, and pointed in the general direction of the leaves, she cast the spell aloud. Instantly, the leaves stood up and, at Tessa's wishes, began to spin and dance- even coming over to circle around them before fluttering to the ground once more when Tessa ended the spell. "For this one, you have to focus on what you want to control, and it's harder with multiple objects," she explained. "Would you like to try?"
*A small smile came to him when she said that he was nice. It was true, Jacen could be a real git sometimes but he had his good moments.*
"Well I am happy to have met you as well. Jacen isn't all that bad, you'll have to meet him one day."
*Pulling out a few prawn crisps he used his wand to sling shot them out on to the lake for Henry. So Anna next comment confused him. Why was she turning away all red? Maybe she was sick or something. Romulus may be smart but he was clueless about girls.*
"Thanks, your a good friend too."

Permission, yes. Ella nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. This was nice, having a normal conversation with Lottie without feeling like she wanted to make a quick getaway. Perhaps the talk they'd had earlier in the term had made things a bit better between them? At least now she knew where she stood if anything.
Vinea Funiculus and pointing. Sounded familiar. "Yeah, that. Thank you." For the reminder. The eighteen year old had notes in her bag somewhere but she wasn't keen to go fishing for them at the moment. There was just way too much stuff in there. She...should probably clean it out later or something.
Amusing, that was. Ella smiled a bit wider at the demonstration, noting Lottie's dissatisfaction with her work. "It wasn't that bad. Perfectly good rope if you're, say, a mouse." She was kidding, of course, and not meanly either. "Your next one will be better." Obviously. The brunette didn't strike the blonde as the type to give up until something was perfect or near to.
Her turn.
Pointing her wand at the vine, Ella concentrated on what she wanted and then said clearly, "Vinea Funiculus!" Hm. It was a rope, not a bad one either. Ella set her wand down and picked it up in her hands, tugging on it gently. "Strong but...too heavy, I think." Ella wasn't exactly the strongest around so she'd need to work on that.
"Reverto."
And again because she wanted to get her rope as good as she could. "Vinea Funiculus!" A point of her wand later and again, there was a rope. Better this time. If only they had more people for a tug-o-war match. Perhaps her and Lottie would be on the same side this time around.
This is probably the only conversation she's ever had with Ella where: 1. Lottie didn't discreetly run away from loud children while at a shop, 2. Things got so awkward that there was literally nothing to talk about, or 3. Ella got upset and then there was definitely nothing to talk about. They seemed to be doing alright now. Good.
"You're welcome," she replied, adding a smile as well. Really, it seemed they could help each other out in Transfiguration. Let's just wait and see until the second part of the lesson comes along and what it brings. Homework-wise, anyway.
Perfectly good rope---Say whaaat? Lottie almost stared at Ella in disbelief. ALMOST, because then she said that thing about a mouse and Lottie just started to laugh, "Not even," she joked. Clearly, the rope was meant for Nargles. But she nodded at her next comment, she'd get it better next time, definitely.
More nodding. "Yes, your second try looks better." It did.
As far as her vine was concerned, Lottie focused on it and envisioned a longer, strong and relatively light rope (such as those the elves from Tolkien have), and pointed her wand at it, "Vinea Funiculus!" her voice sounded so confident this time, and her focus was spot-on, because the minute she touched the rope she was entirely pleased with it. Even tugging a bit proved its strength and overall lightness.
"Oh wow. The tongue again? So mature." Emma giggled, raising a brow at him. He was so funny, and the best part was she was starting to feel comfortable around him.
Pfffffffffffft. Boys."Riiiight. Because you can totally beat me WITHOUT interference!" She rolled her eyes, gifting him with another one of her smirks. He was SO full of it. "And I look forward to winning and all that comes with it.." Now Emma had even more reason to start running in her free time.
She laughed, tossing more marshmallows at him as she ran towards the nearest tree. "Riiiight. Suuuure. I'm so scareeed!" Emma feigned mock terror, flashing him a wink before darting over to the next tree.
There was absolutely NO WAY she was going to allow herself to be caught and thrown into the freezing water.
Nope. No way. Noooooo siree.
Funny how he had accused Zahra of being immature and now apparently he was the one being not so mature. But Emma was so much fun that he couldn't help but fool around. "You're not complaining, are you?"Now it was his turn to raise an eyebrow.
Oh Merlin! Was she still going on about the hair thing? "Emma, Emma, Emma." Michael shook his head and smirked at her. "You're living in a fantasy world if you think you can beat me." He reached out and ran his fingers lightly over the ends of her hair. "And I don't need to pull your hair to do it." He just had a thing about tugging on her girls hair.
And then she was off. Michael caught the last marshmallow and stuffed it into his mouth as he watched her at the tree. "Apparently you are, since you're running away and all." He wasn't really going to throw her into the water, but he wasn't going to tell her that.
He merely began his advance towards her with a devilish look on his face.

"Yo yo yo sis!" he called with a grin. Why had he said that?? He sounded like a muggle rapper. Ah well. It was just Sophie.
Sophie heard her brother before she saw him. Without even turning around, she said, "Maybe Bellaire needs to teach us how to transfigure a clock from something, hmm?" she asked. So he was only a few minutes late, but come on--this was homework! Sophie had wayyyy better things to do.
She finally turned and saw his vines and lumber. "Guess I should do the same," she said. "But look--I learned a new spell." she showed him her toy-sized boat. A moment later, she'd reverted everything back and, ust like her brother, held vines and lumber in her hand.
"Okay, so basically we've just got to practice the spell and then produce a new boat and rope? Is that all?" she asked. Because if so, that was a piece of cake. "Oh, and test the boat, right? I nominate you to do that."

But teasing aside, Grace did seem on edge. Maybe she really WAS nervous about tryouts. It was so unlike her to be nervous about anything but hearing her next comment, proved her suspicions were correct.
"Oh hush! When have I ever JINXED something?! Never, have I ever," she said, hoping Grace would pick up on the name of the game they sometimes played.
"Seee" Grace giggled, beaming at her best friend. She knew that she wasn't the only one. "You like them toooo." Of course Ava did. She was her best friend of course "I know that. I'm not stupid" Well she certainly hoped not anyway. She didn't think she was, but then people might think she was. But hopefully they didn't.
"Nooo" There was nothing wrong with it. Well if she got really spoilt and demanded lots of things there and then. But she was not that spoilt, and she didn't want everything. Not yet anyway. She smiled at her best friend. Hopefully. Ava didn't think that she was really spoilt. Because that wouldn't be to good. Not when they were supposed to be best friends.
"Yeahhhh. But you can't be too careful!" You really could not be. This was serious business. "I hope we find out soon! It's making me reaallly nervous"

"Haha, I suppose," she conceded. There was really no point in arguing the facts.
And there it was. Poor Grace. She was all but admitting to being on edge. Ava brushed her hair off of her shoulder and made to get up. She wasn't going to contribute to making her friend anymore nervous than she already was.
"You're right, Grace. Let's go back to the castle. I'm hungry." In the end, they would both find out when the rosters were finally posted. Until then, there was always ice cream.
