Stars illuminate the dark canvas of the sky as you make your way to the Astronomy Tower and enter the Astronomy classroom where once again Heating Charms are in place. Perhaps a little too strongly, but Professor Flamsteed has become especially sensitive to cold weather with his weary bones. The desks are arranged in their usual semi circle to help created a more personal environment and have the addition of a small present for each of you as you sit down at your desk. Professor Flamsteed's desk is positioned in the front of the classroom and doesn't have anything terribly exciting about it. Save for perhaps the professor sitting behind it. Off to the side on another table are all of your solar systems in a box, but don't go and get them just yet.
So come on in and find your seat. Oh, and don’t forget to use the lint roller.......wait...it is missing again. Oh well.

Explosion?
Well, Layla supposed it made sense, since they were supposed to be gas planets and all. And of course, there was probably some heat involved. Anyway, she walked over to her little solar system and......well, she didn't really want to move it. It was a little on the heavy side, seeing as there were ten planets there already. Not to mention, she was a little worried about knocking her planets out of their orbits. Had Professor Flamsteed said anything about not doing this over here? No? Okay, that was what she was going to do then.
She grabbed her mortar and pestle, gave them a quick Scourgify (remembering Potions class) and set to work. Two scoops of hydrogen, two scoops of helium and two scoops of nitrogen went into the mortar, followed by a small pebble.
Grind grind grind.
Now, with that mixture being powdered, Layla took aim with her wand and preformed the spell, ducking as soon as she had.
"Fingere Elementi!"
BOOM

Checking his sundial watch and giving it a few taps with his finger - was it still working? He couldn't hear and ticking when he brought it up to his ear - he was finally able to guesstimate the time and it was time to move on.
And perhaps get himself a new sundial watch.
"Alright everyone, finish up what you are doing and clean up your stations. Wands away, please. You can keep your solar systems on your desk as they are yours to keep," he announced as he waved his arm in the air to hopefully draw attention to himself his his feeble shouting hadn't done the job.
"Part of the wonder that is Astronomy is being able to actually see the very celestial objects you have been studying, and I'm not just talking about the planets in front of you but the real ones out there," he continued as he thrust a bony finger towards one of the open windows at the starry sky. "By my watch it is now getting close to 8 o'clock and while, unfortunately, we will not be able to see all the planets tonight...we WILL be able to spot three. Can anyone tell me which three those are? Please keep in mind we only have another 30 minutes or so left in the lesson."
OOC: please wrap up your Jovian planet formation if you have no already done so
Class will resume in approximately 10 hours from the time of this post with the final activity and gaaaaaaaaaaaaame of the lesson :3

Bay listened and quickly raised his hand "errr.. Professor would that be, Mars, Venus and Mercury?" he knew that those would be closest to earth so you'd most likely be able to see it.. fingers crossed right.
oh they got to clean up.. Bay put his ingredients away and picked up his wand and said "Scourgify" to clean up everything else on his desk and around it.. putting his wand away he placed his books, parchment and quill back in his bag while leaving his solar system on his desk..
starring at it while other students gave their answers. ohhh he still had more chocolate left over, awesome. he took one out of the little bag and unwrapped it trying to be very quite.. he free'd it from its wrapper and popped it into his mouth… "yummmmmmmmm" he thought while munching away.

Awww, no more making planets. How sad. Though it made Lux super happy that she would be able to keep her little solar system. Awesome. She could show it off to her parents and siblings later.
Not really knowing what the answer to the question was, Lux started cleaning up her station so that it was neat and tidy for Professor Flamsteed. She did not want to disappoint her favourite Professor! After putting her ingredients back away, she made sure to clean everything else up using Scourgify.
Finished that, she put her wand away and waited patiently for the lesson to progress.

Sander began cleaning up the moment Professor Flamsteed instructed them to do so. First he cleaned his mortar, pestle and measuring spoon, by pointing his wand at each of them and saying the incantation,"Scourgify". As he made sure all three were cleaned before ending the spell, Sander heard the Astronomy Professor ask his question.
Which three planets would they be able to see tonight? Sander decided to hazard a guess. Raising his hand, Sander gave his answer.
"Professor since it's March 17th and we are in the Northern Hemisphere, I believe that we should be able to see Jupiter, Mars and Saturn. Venus and Mercury can only be seen clearly when it's closer to dawn."
Was he right? Sander decided to continue cleaning up while waiting for Professor Flamsteed to confirm. Now that he had cleaned his tools, Sander cleaned his work station, pointing his wand at it and saying, "Scourgify".
Okay mortar, pestle, spoon and workstation clean. Next he made sure the lids on the powdered substances were on tight. Check. The lid on his glass container was on tight. Check. Satisfied that he had done everything that needed to be done, Sander holstered his wand and watched his solar system inside the container.
He was glad that they were going to be allowed to take them home. He suspected that once Cris saw his, his brother would want to make one himself.

What planets could they see? Grace had no idea. She didn't really go out and look for planets on a regular basis. She liked making them yes, but she wasn't so good at looking at them. But then she was like little and stuff. Well she had been. She looked like she should have graduated by now. As she was thinking of her answer, mr big swallowed the whole textbook spoke up. Didn't he want to give other people a chance? Because that wasn't really fair. Know it all. Grace really didn't like know it alls.
She really didn't know the answer either. So the figured that she would just guess. She bit her lip for a few moments before putting her hand in the air. "The big ones?"

Yup, Toby was still totally mesmerised over here. It was hard not to be; Astronomy at Hogwarts was amazing when they got to do stuff like this, you see.
But he looked up at the faint sound of Airey's voice, and obediently set his wand safely in his bag, a location he felt sure he'd remember.
And as for the question? Tobias knew ONE for sure, so he stuck his hand up.
"Earth!"

Hearing Professor Flamsteed give his instructions, Adi jumped up and cleaned his workstation. He was totally pleased they were able to keep their solar systems. Now that he was done with the cleaning, he sat back down just as Flamsteed continued to speak.
Which three planets they will be able to see? Errr...No idea. However, Adi ventured an educated guess. "Venus, Professor,'' he said, waving a hand in the air. It was the brightest planet, right? "And Mars perhaps?'' Mars was merely a guess. He only said it because it was his favourite planet.

Hm. Alice went ahead and cleaned her station by... sitting there.
What? She was clean when she worked, so there was no mess and nothing to do.
And since she wasn't scouring her area with charms or anything, she could focus more on Aireyhead's question. "You can definitely see Jupiter, sir. In March, it's the only planet visible all night. I think Mars rises sometime around mid-evening and can be seen any time after, too." What was the last one? Others said Saturn, but she was sure it wouldn't come out until later that night.
"Er... Uranus? Does that set around the west at around, like, 8:30 pm?" If she was wrong, blame the senility. If she was right, did she get points?

Airey shook his head. "Venus and Mercury will not be visible until much much later. Venus out to appear out of the East around 4 am and followed two hours later, abouts, by Mercury. Much MUCH later than I will be keeping you." Although they were more than welcome to try and spot the planets from their own dormitories.

Airey had asked for three planets....right? Why was Mr. Strand listing five? Clearing his throat and rubbing the top of his head in mild agitation, he simply shook his head at the Hufflepuff. "Three, Mr. Strand, not five," he muttered. "Regardless, no combination of the planets you listed is correct."

Could she guess again? Alice wanted to guess again.
"Jupiter, Mars, and Neptune." 'Cause the last had to be a gas giant, right? He'd mentioned that, and Mars was a terrestrial planet. Someone had already said Saturn, and she'd guessed Uranus, so.... yes? Please?

Ella had been listening while she cleaned up her work space and returned things to where they needed to be. They'd be looking at planets tonight, that was nice. It was 8 pm though which meant it was getting close to her bedtime. She was going to bed earlier and earlier these days. Surviving old age meant she needed to get a lot of sleep, apparently.
The guesses so far had been incorrect? Well, except for Alice's. She'd gotten two of the three right, apparently. Jupiter...Mars..and? Oh. Another guess from Alice. Ella was thinking Neptune as well. Mars was the Terrestrial planet of the three. Then he'd said two were Jovian, right? Or he'd alluded to that? "I agree with Alice. If two of the three are Jovian, and you've already ruled out Saturn and Uranus, it has to be Neptune, Jupiter, and Mars."
Kace was finished up with his activity so he didn't have to worry about that. Once he put his planet into the box, he heard the professor ask another question. He wondered what planets they were gonna see tonight. He heard they were seeing Uranus at 3am however so Alice wasn't too far off.
Kace raised his hand and gave a guess, "Professor will we be able to see Saturn? Or maybe...Jupiter?" He was unsure but if he was wrong, he was wrong.

After the explosions she was hearing a little ringing in her ear that threatened to distract her from the Professor and his lesson. It was kinda like the time she, Nigel and Mika went exploding things by the black lake then she had to head to the Healer afterward because she was freaking out about losing her hearing...at the risk of getting caught by Mr. Firth who'd ordered her back to her Common Room for the rest of the day. Man, that was a fun day.....until Professor Airey ate all her ice-cream trying to prove a point but he gave it back so it was fine.
And you wanna know something....? Lex got the feeling her mind was becoming a distraction to her as well. She couldn't remember her initial train of thought but was well aware that she must have gone through like a million since idly commenting to herself that her ears were ringing.
Ugh. Focus Lex, there was a lessont o be had and OWLs at the end of the year!
She blinked, realizing she'd missed the whole question and the Professor was going on about always being able to see the earth, she knew that. They were on it. What was this discussion really? The Prefect wasn't meant to feel this lost was she?
Not wanting to talk out of turn like with the nutella she slowly reached for the gold coin in the chocolate cauldron of the kid next to her and fished it back to her then nibbled on it quietly while she watched them all name planets. She could name planets too...'cept her mouth was full, see?

Okay, this was clearly a hard question because not even the really smart students like Ella and Sander could get the answer right. And. They. Knew. Stuff.
Curiously she watched, remaining silent. So Jupiter and Mars were definitely involved while Saturn and Uranus had been ruled out. When Alice and Ella offered that the other planet was Neptune, she nodded her head in agreement. Yes, that choice made sense in her mind. And they were smart.

Using the process of elimination, Caleb had been writing a list of the planets and crossing out the ones the professor said they couldn't see. He raised his hand and decided to venture a guess after crossing off a few that the professor had veteoed.
"Can we see Jupiter, Mars and...Neptune?" he guessed. No one had guessed Neptune yet!

Bart had made his planet and that was cool. So did he just make a gassy planet? snicker He placed it in the jar and closed the lid just as Professor Flamdude started going on about seeing things. What things parents? Why would he be talking about bananas and seeing them in the sky? He started looking up in the sky, "I don't see any parents." Why would he want to see parents in the sky anyway. Shouldn't they be looking for stars or something. "Our parents didn't get this aging thing and now are dead in the sky are they?" He thought about his mum and the twins. Wait she can't be in the sky anywhere she had to be with them.
That's when he heard others talking about planets. Oh Whoops, he must of said planets not parents. Bart scooted down in his chair a little, maybe the professor didn't hear him. So planets they were talking about them, because... He thought a bit, and looked up. Probably the ones they could see, was that it. He put his hands up again. "Professor can you see Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn." He loved Saturn it was his favorite.
Another guess.... another guess... Annabeth's feet pattered nervously on the floor, she had heard something about it on the corridors... Mars was definitively one of them... Three... Mars and Saturn... of course! She raised her hand "Jupiter pops out at nightfall. So, we can see Jupiter, Mars and Saturn."
Again, she wasn't sure about it, she just knew or felt it was the right answer, though she didn't know how she could know about it... it was kind of "hearing the cock's crowing without knowing where the sound came from." Hopefully the teacher wouldn't ask her about it.

Wait the Professor had said none of those he mentioned were correct, but others had mentioned Jupiter and Mars and they seemed almost correct. Sander decided to chalk it up to poor hearing on his part. So he decided to hazard a guess again as he raised his hand.
"Professor could it be Jupiter, Mars and.....Neptune, since we've crossed out the other remaining Jovian planets," Sander gave his answer, trying to use some sense of possible logic in his explanation, while agreeing with Alice and Ella.

Sophie collected the appropriate amounts of hydrogen, helium, and nitrogen then brought them back to her work station. She added two scoops of each to her mortar then followed that by adding in a small pebble, as well. Then she set about the task of grinding up the items using her mortar and pestle. When the substance had turned into powder form, Sophie raised her wand. "Fingere Elementi!" she said.
She finished just in time, too, as the professor called for their attention and asked them to clean up. Sophie did just that then put her solar system off to the side.
...and then they began playing the guessing game. Sophie sat back, all Slytherin style, and tried to do trial and error based on what her classmates were told. She began striking out combinations in her hand and finally, she came up with--"What about Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn?" she asked, raising her hand.

He had said any combination would have been incorrect, not that Mr. Strand was entirely incorrect. The young man's answer of five had triggered the astronomer's Mr Grumpy McGrump Pants and made his response more senile, unfortunately.
Oh, there was the thought of stewed prunes again. Mmmmmmmhmmmm.....
But two thumbs way way up for you this time around, Mr. Strand. "Roger that!"

Not meaning to, he was just thinking about how hungry he was for his prunes, he gave the Hufflepuff the stink eye. He wasn't exactly LOOKING at the young man, more like the door to the classroom and contemplating just how long it would take for him to hobble to the kitchens to get some.
Or maybe he could summon a house elf to bring him some? That seemed like a plan...

"Yes yes and no," he replied. He wasn't going to sing again because his voice was already feeling a bit horse from doing so twice. Sweet solstice...were his singing days numbered as well?
That was a depressing thought.
"As many of you concluded, tonight we will be able to see Mars, Jupiter, and Neptune before it is time to dismiss the lesson," he announced as he tried to stand. "And, while it is NOT a planet but since so many of you are such.......fans for it, Pluto will also just barely be visible to the West." So there were four celestial objects he would like for them to look for in the night sky - although in his mind he was making Pluto optional because, well, NOT a planet. "While you can see these with the naked eye, that is not nearly as fun as seeing them close up by using a telescope," he continued, giving his wand another study tap against his desk to conjure powerful personal telescopes for each student in front of their desks. "Using the telescopes in front of you, you are to move about the classroom and try to spot each of these four celestial objects. You may not be able to see them all out of the same window, but thankfully the classroom is circular which gives you plenty of angles to work with. If you know how to manually focus one of these telescopes you may do so, but given the time constraint you may use Lens Focalis."
Finally standing, he hobbled over to the front of his desk and leaned against it.
"You have about 25 minutes to do this. First person from each house to complete this may receive a little bonus something." Smiiiiiiiiiiirk. "You may BEGIN!"
for your RPing reference, he is what the sky looks like.
This was done using a online star chart that shows the sky at any date and time anywhere in the world.
OOC :: hidden in various locations on the Hogwarts Grounds are the following symbols for Mars, Jupiter, Neptune, and Pluto:
I have hidden 35 of EACH, so there should be plenty for you to find but you only need to find ONE OF EACH. Meaning 1 Mars, 1 Jupiter, 1 Neptune, and 1 Pluto.
To "find" the planet, you will need to quote the post that the symbol has been edited into and RP finding the planet in this thread. So this will look something like this:

Please TITLE your post with the thread you found the planet in and the post number. For example: The Whomping Willow, #203.
Only ONE planet per post please and absolutely NO DOUBLE POSTING. This means you should have at least 4 thoughtful posts for this activity. You CAN post not finding anything if your character is the sort to struggle with this sort of thing <3
I have a master list of where everything is that I will use to check and make sure that no one has spotted the same post as someone else and will post periodically with updates.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask me via VM or PM
You will have at least 36 hours from the time of this post for this activity
Please remember that while you OOC are looking at threads on the grounds, your character IC is looking at the sky

Adi wondered why in the world Professor Flamsteed was looking at him like that. Was it because he failed to provide an answer this time? Adi avoided the man's eyes and listened to him continue. Oh! This sounded fuuuun!
Using Lens Focalis on the telescope, Adi set to work. A few minutes into his search he found Jupiter! Yay!
SPOILER!!: Jupiter

Oooh a presy!!!
Every time Silver coughed it was like her bones were tearing apart. But Beverly totally made her day better!
"Awwww, Beverly!" There full name, happy now? "You are so nice!" Tear. Silver's lip quivered as a couple tears brewed in her eyes. Dramatic much? Yup. Typical Silver Barry.
Oh Tin-Man you do have a heart!
Silver removed the pink ribbon and tied it around her wrist like a bracelet. "You're the first real friend I've ever had!" Wibble. Wibble.
She took a bite out of the cookie and my goodness was it delicious!

Sander listened up as the Professor gave instructions on what they needed to do next. Oh they were now going to be looking for the planets up in the sky. Sander walked over one of the telescopes, adjusted the focussing by swishing and waving his wand over the lens and saying "Lens Focalis" and began to look through looking around up in the sky moving the telescope back and forth up and down slowly searching the skies.
'Where are you....where are you?' he thought to himself.
Wait was it....yes he found one.
