Astronomy Lesson 2 :: create your own Solar System lab
The door to the Astrophysics Laboratory has been left ajar for today's lesson and as you approach the first thing you may or may not notice is that the usual small table with Professor Flamsteed's trusty lint roller is no where to be seen. The usual semicircle formation of desks has been replace by the more standard classroom set up with rows of hardwood tables and, instead of chairs, cushioned stools for students to sit on. At each station is a large glass box and small dark jars labeled 'H,' 'He,' and 'Fe' respectively.
Before you take your seat, however, be sure to take your white lab coat and goggles out of the enchanted closest with your name embroidered on it in your house color. You will definitely be needing those today. Safety first.
Professor Flamsteed is standing by the blackboard with his balance on his trusty cane and his right hand clenched behind his back as if hiding something.

With gleaming eyes Abbi watched as her powder formed into a perfect planet. She gazed it only for a few seconds and then picked it up. She was touching a planet! Like how cool? Even if it wasn't real, real I mean it was like totally almost the same thing.
Plonk.
She carefully placed the smaller planet with the sun and watched waiting for the movement that didn't happen so soon, but eventually a small short rough-like movement happened.
Was this right then? Could she start thinking of what to name the planet?
She felt so boss right now. Made a planet for the day. #NormalHogwartsDay
... Which was probably going to be a little difficult. Delilah gently dropped the foliage and the stone into the mortar before she added two scoops of iron to it. Whack, whack, whack. Yeah, no. She was going to have to be a little stronger so she whacked with the pestle a little more.. and, yes. Done! It was a fine powder now. Thankfully. And now, she was suddenly feeling exhausted. Sigh.
The mildly offensive song well underway, Cutty continued powdering the rock, iron and foliage. It looked almost perfect, but he kept up with it for just a while longer until a term like 'almost' need not be applied. With his wand in hand he took the pile of powdered planet over to the glass box. He tilted the mortar over the glass box and watched as the fine grain substance fell like a landslide right next to the glowy sun he had earlier produced.
"Fingere Elementi!" He said jabbing the pile. Aaaaaaand, there it was, with a bright blast and a BING! Pizza was born! That was this planets name, by the way. Pizza. Pizza was immediately detained as Cutty shut it up in the glass box.

Alexa took everything back to her work station and opted to get right to work before her wrist seized up or something. No telling what these joints were up to these days. One minute they were fine and the next all plans of productivity had to be abandoned. That was possibly one of the more annoying things about whatever it was that was affecting her.
The Prefect added the foliage and stone to the mortar then added the two scoops of iron. Now to chance this pestle grinding thing. Lex started by giving a few hard jabs at the rocks and everything with the pestle, just incase they were trying to be tough but once they'd softened enough she took it a little easier, giving measured jabs at the mixture in her mortar until everything was crushed together into a powder.
Was she meant to check that there were no lumps? Would those somehow have a negative effect on her planet?
Deciding she didn't wanna chance it, Lex stuck a finger in it and in fact detected a small piece of stone that hadn't succumbed to the pounding.
Smash. Smash. Smash.
That looked about right now. She could move on.

Now that she finally crushed the stone, she began to crush the foliage, which was a waaay easier task. So easy that she actually got that done fairly quick. Now she just had to crush the two scoops of iron. Which kind of scared her.
Well, she knew that some elements had weird reactions to being crushed or tampered with. And while she knew that the Professor would never have them work with anything actually DANGEROUS, there was always the possiblity of error. Lke what if she crushed it too much? Could there be a reaction? Or too little? Or too slowly? Okay, she was over-thinking it a liiiitle too much now. She should probably actually get to work instead of wondering about the reactions it could cause. But still, interesting results could happen man.
She crushed the iron and put the last of it into the box. And no, she didn't know how this worked. Because how did foliage and iron and a stone create a planet? That didn't seem to make sense. These were all things that WERE ON planets, but then she thought that water should be included. Okay, so maybe she should ask.
"Professor? Why do THESE ingredients make a planet? These are all things like ON a planet, but then shouldn't water be involved? How do iron, a stone, some foliage and the spell make a planet?" While she asked her question, she continued working, wanting to get donew hile she asked. Because she didn't want to stop the whole rythym of the working.
And besides, this was why she liked activities like this, and potions clases. Because she liked feeling like a scientist. It was a cool feeling. No matter how weird it was for the ingredients to actually make something, but she really loved the idea that a few ingredients could make a giant thing. It was cool.
Anyway, everything was in the box. All she had to do was that spell on the box and make the actualy planet thing. Which should be easy. But she still had to actually do the spell. Which wouldn't be hard. Caelen just had to remember what the spell was.

Yaaay. They got to make their first planet now. Grace was feeling super excited. This lesson was turning out to be so much fun. She was only hoping that she would be able to make all the planets before she started to feel sleepy. Luckily she felt quite awake right now. So that was very good. Smiling, she began to read the instructions for the how to make her first planet.
First she had to go pick her foliage. Pushing herself up from her seat, she wandered to the front of the class. She wanted to get some good foliage, so that her planet looked nice and good. Because she was greedy, Grace picked up 2 pieces, before picking up her small stone from the other stone. Her planet was going to look totally cool. Before returning to her table, she also grabbed the container of iron. Smiling to herself, she wandered back to her desk. Before mixing all the stuff together, she decided to re-read the information. Just to make sure she did made the planet right.

Well that had been enjoyable. He had sort of wanted to try a variation, though. Experiment a bit with how much foliage or rock could be used with the iron. Would it upset the ratio too drastically? Would it still work? Cutty left his planet and his sun to mingle peaceably in their glass encampment whilst he drew over to the rocks and foliage. This time taking two of each. He then scooped out the two scoops of iron and took the materials back to his mortar. Crushing ensued and so did his inappropriate song, only this time it was whistled softly and not sung. Thank you, Merlin.

Professor? Oh, right, that was him! Hobbling over towards the Gryffindor, he rested both his hands on his cane and turned his good ear towards her to be sure he could hear her question correctly. More than one? Hmmm... "I would prefer if you made no more than two during the time remaining," he replied as he tapped his lower lip with his index finger. "If you find that you have finished your own, I would appreciate it if you could assist your classmates rather then get ahead on your own homework." He paused and gave a quick glance towards Miss Hyde (Harry174) who was pronouncing the spell incorrectly.
Did Miss Hedge catch the subtext of what he was saying? He hoped so. She was a bright young lady.

Tessa smiled as the PRofessor came over- the question wasn't urgent, so she hoped he hadn't rushed over. However, it was important for the future of her solar system... Anyway.
She nodded at his words. "Understood Professor," she told him with a nod. She probably had time for a second planet, but the Professor wasn't done yet. Following his gaze over to the Hufflepuff a small smile played on her lips. She would certainly try. "I'll see what I can do Professor," she said, shooting him a wide grin. She gathered the materials for a second planet, and walked over to where Laura was working. After all, she could make a second planet as an example for the other girl- she wasn't going to do the work for her.

"Finger Element." Laura squinted as she tried to look at the writing on the board why was her eyesight getting worse, she was worried about this and she didn't like it one bit. She was sure she was missing one of the letter of each of the spell but she couldn't see what it was she was missing.
Tessa walked up to the work station and gave the Hufflepuff a girl a wave. "How's it going over here Laura? Would you like a hand?" she asked, sitting gingerly in an empty chair nearby. If she hadn't sat, she wasn't sure how long her knees would have tolerated her standing.

Alec glanced down at his journal again. It was that spell. Fingere Elementi. They had to use that again, yeah? And once the planet was made... it went into the box. Along with the Sun. AWESOME. Here's hoping that this planet wouldn't end up being bigger than the Sun because... that wouldn't be great. It probably wouldn't be right either.
What was the spell again? Fingere Elementi... Fingere Elementi... "Fingere... Elementi... Fingere... Elementi...." Jabbing was easy, there was no need to practice that. ... Cue two small jabbing motions with his wand. No need to practice the jabbing wand movement after those two. Nodnod. "Fingere Elementi!"JAB!

A wide grin spread across the eighteen year old's face as he-- ... In the box, Summers! He quickly tossed the planet into the box and shut the lid tightly. There. Now he can stand back and observe what he had made so far for as long as he wanted. HEY sun and planet! WAVE.

"I think it would make a great newspaper after all we have to make the sun right." Laura had heard of the newspaper before though she wasn't very keen on it.
"I'm trying to make the sun, I just said that, see that says the Sun on it though the Sun has like 50 pages in it so it takes time." Laura sighed, though I hope this Finger element spell works." Laura beamed and she was hoping it would make her fingers move faster.

What did plants and stones have to do with making planets? Weren't they usually all gas except for like...Earth? He clearly didn't know a lot about the solar system. Eh, whatever.
He went over to the supply areas and grabbed a handful of some leafy foliage and then selected a small, gray stone from the pile. Alright, he had both of those. Now time to crush everything together yeah?

Laura looked at Tessa, this was confusing. "But that sun is massive, how you going to shrink it down to fit into that box?" Laura was thinking this was getting very bad now, was the Professor going to steal the sun like that guy did in that film with the moon.
Laura listened again. "No need to shout young one." Laura really didn't like shouting and she couldn't stand the fact her friend thought it was cool to shout. "Fingere Elementi." Laura said as she tried for the third time to get it right.

"We're not going to shrink a sun, we're going to make a miniature one," she explained, squinting up at the board to remind herself of the ingredients. "It won't have any effect on our earth or solar system, we're just making a model, like kids do in grade school. Except, ours are much cooler!"
"I'm not that much younger than you," Tessa replied with a soft laugh. But, apparently, the yelling had worked because the girl had the spell correct. "There you go, that's it. Now, just say that and jab your wand at the ingredients that you put together for the sun... have you done that?" she asked.

Laura smiled at her friend. "Okay then." Laura was happy about that but she still didn't trust this professor one bit, he was a bit crazy. "I hope your right." Laura seriously didn't want to be known as the person that ended the world.
Laura giggled. "Oh but you are my young friend." Laura smirked as she listened to what was said. She jabbed her wand and was about to say the spell when Tessa said something. "You mean the yellow paint and the cardboard?" Because no Laura hadn't got that yet was she supposed to.

Now that she had those things, she was just supposed to grind them up, yeah? Penelope dropped the two things of foliage and the stone into the mortar but then paused. There was...actually something missing, wasn't there? Something else she was supposed to add with it...
She looked around her table and spotted the thing she was missing. Powder! Iron powder? Yes, that. She took two scoops of it and dumped both into the mortar with the foliage and stone and then grabbed the pestle.
Now this would be the fun part, trying to break the stone. She brought the pestle down HARD on the stone, and it seemed to crack a little with a few small bits falling off, but that obviously wasn't enough. SMASH. SMASH. SMASH. SMASH. SMASH.
SMASH.
Phew.... Merlin.....that was really tiring. And her arms felt a bit sore or something now from all that effort and the impacts of the pestle on the stone. It was all in pieces now at least, so she just needed to grind up the grass and flower with the rest, which wouldn't be all that hard. It was done within half a minute really.
She needed to pause and take a breather from all that though. The spell could wait.

Okay, so now all Caelen needed was the spell. And then she was going to have a stinking PLAAANNET. This was really exciting. She was going to have the sun and a planet. And they were allowed to make one more, right? Didn't the Professor say that this was allowed? The blue-eyed girl could have her own little solar system! Well a sort of solar system. A tiny solar system like thing.
Okay, spell time. Caelen grabbed her wand from her desk and held it tight in her right hand. That was her spell hand after all.
"Fingere Elementi!" Jabby jab jab. Wait for it. Waaaaaiiiiit for it. The redhead threw her two red braids over her shoulder to make sure they wouldn't burn or anything and leaned in a little. Because solar systems were exciting. She was making things. She felt like a scientist. Or Dr. Frankenstein. At least she wasn't going to make a giant green monster.
She did it! She had a plaaannnnet! Exciting. This was exciting. Now she had to dump the sun into it and hopefully make it make a bunch of random counter-clockwise movements. Not an orbit yet ..... no no, but still some random movements.
Okay, sun time. Little redhead Dr. Frankenstein picked up the box with the sun and moved it over, holding her breath slightly. What if she SPILLED the sun? The redhead couldn't think of exactly what would happen, but it wouldn't be good. She knew that much. She opened the top of the box and casually dumped everything in. Okay, it didn't move. Still. It was pretty cool. The small planet was smaller than the sun, but still, it was awesome. She thought about making the second one and decided not to and unless the teacher said to.
Now Caelen just had to do more waiting. More and more waiting until the teacher told them that something else was happening. But still waiting. Waiting was booooring. However, it had to be done.

"Anytime, Lux." Grin! Ella didn't mind helping and honestly, the younger girl had pretty much had the situation under control. All Ella had really done is confirm she was doing it right and if that helped, awesome.
And hey, now that her foliage, stone, and iron were in powder form, she was ready to create her planet. This was really cool, y'know? Ella got a bit giddy in anticipation and bounced in her seat, sending a shooting pain up her back which caused her to wince. Right...her body couldn't handle things like they used to. Noted.
What was the incantation again. Uhh...umm...erm...OH! Fingere Elementi! That was most definitely it.
"Fingere Elementi!" Jab!
OHDHKJGDKJHJKHKK! A planet! A planet that she made and it was hers and she'd created this and OHMYGOSH! Proud planet mommy was proud! The eighteen year old sheepishly guided it into the box with her sun and then carefully closed the lid, beaming at how well they'd turned out. Cool lesson was really cool. The blonde took a moment to just admire the mini solar system of sorts before cleaning up her materials.

"Well, I'm sure that's one way to do it, but we're supposed to use..." Darn her memory. She squinted up at the board, but when that wasn't enough, she went over to get her notes. "I scoop of Helium and one scoop of hydrogen," she said, pointing at the containers. "Then you perform the spell!"

Laura listed so no paint or cardboard now that was too bad it would have been fun. Laura listened to her young friend and did what she said. making sure she did exactly what it said on the tin. "Fingere Elementi." Laura jabbed her wand and smiled. "Is that good enough for you?"

Tessa watched as Laura mixed the ingredients for the sun. She hoped it would work- everything seemed to be in order. When Laura cast the spell, Tessa sat back to watch. However, as everything swirled and the light increased, she began to get nervous.
"Get down!" she exclaimed, ducking down and gently pulling Laura down too.

Caleb had figured it'd be easiest to get the hard part of the crushing - the stone - out of the way before doing much else, so once he finally had it ground into a powder, he added the iron. He hoped that wouldn't affect this planet in the end, but if it was all mixed in the end why did it matter?
He took the two scoops and tossed them in, crushing it into a soft powder mix with the stone and the foliage, which was really ground down now. Now that his powdery cocktail was complete, all he had to do was the spell...

"Are our planets going to orbit our Sun in the order that we make them, sir?"
Also, were they going to add moons? How about comets? Secondary bodies?
Merlin, this was fun. And exciting. And question inducing. She scribbled down some notes on the steps Airey had given them, for forgetfulness had been quite an issue lately, and then Alice hopped up to fetch stuff. Movement was still going a lot slower than she would have liked, though. It just gave her nerves for Quidditch, but surely this stiffness would go away by then? In the meantime, she'd have to deal.
Selecting a few flower petals from the first box and a deep blue stone from the bottom of the other, she slowly ambled back to her seat.

"I'm the one with the eye issues, says the blind guy who's throwing his goggles around in a tantrum because he can't see anything." Excellent accusation there, Branxton. As she dropped her materials into her mortar, Alice muttered another "wand thief" in his direction. He was.

Planet making time. Ana could almost dance in excitement. She was going to be a creator! An intelligent designer! This was almost too cool to be real.
They needed to move? Okay. That was not so cool. Because Ana's bones were aching. Aching she said. Did Airey not realise that for people that were getting older movement was a problem? That other people were afflicted just like he was and so they shouldn't have to move either?
Apparently not. Oh well.
Heaving herself from her stool Ana's knees popped and her back let out a series of cracks. That actually didn't feel too bad. It had been needing to crack for an hour or two so that was a relief. She'd almost gotten used to how tight it had been. Moving around her desk she walked, because she refused to hobble, towards the Professors desk.
Foliage first. Ana spent a while looking at the foliage, attempting to pick out the bits she thought looked the best. She eventually settled on two pieces, although why she was worried about looks when it was just going to be crushed up she didn't know, before moving on to a rock. That she was much less picky about and ended up just grabbing one from the top. Time to get back to her desk and start making her planet!

Now that he had the supplies to make the planet, Ben actually had to MAKE the planet. "Scourgify," he cast, cleaning out his mortar first. Best to be safe. Then he added two scoops of the iron into it before putting in the stone and folliage as well. The second year began crushing it all together, the stone obviously taking more effort than the rest. But even still, as the professor had mentioned in his instructions, it hadn't been too difficult to make into smaller pieces.
