Astronomy Lesson 2 :: create your own Solar System lab
The door to the Astrophysics Laboratory has been left ajar for today's lesson and as you approach the first thing you may or may not notice is that the usual small table with Professor Flamsteed's trusty lint roller is no where to be seen. The usual semicircle formation of desks has been replace by the more standard classroom set up with rows of hardwood tables and, instead of chairs, cushioned stools for students to sit on. At each station is a large glass box and small dark jars labeled 'H,' 'He,' and 'Fe' respectively.
Before you take your seat, however, be sure to take your white lab coat and goggles out of the enchanted closest with your name embroidered on it in your house color. You will definitely be needing those today. Safety first.
Professor Flamsteed is standing by the blackboard with his balance on his trusty cane and his right hand clenched behind his back as if hiding something.
⌦Lesson Progression
▸ question 1 :: ancient people witnessed 7 'wandering stars'...but what do we know them as?
▸ 7 wandering stars explained :: ZOMG LOOK WHAT YOU ARE MAKING TODAY
▸ question 2 & 3 :: What powdered element do we need more of to replicate the Sun? ▸ question 2 & 3 :: What is the incantation and wand movement to use to make powdered elements turned into a gas and thus make them fuse together to create a star?
▸ activity 1 :: make your "Sun"
▸ activity 2 :: make your first planet
▸ activity update :: thread will be closing in approximately 10 hours
This lesson has officially started! Please do not announce your character arriving late and just pretend like they have been in class all along. You are free to jump in any time and should use the lesson progression links to keep up.
Airey's eyes, unfortunately, had drifted from the faces of his students to the mini solar system in his hands. Short attention span was only made worst by having cruddy short term memory, you know? So he missed the first half of the seventh year's answer, but the bits and pieces he did hear sounded about right so....
"Yes, very good," he nodded towards Mr. Strand.
Maybe he should put his toy away.
Resisting the urge to burst out into a spirited rendition of Goodness Gracious GREAT BALLS OF FIREOF FIRE, the astronomer instead gave his cane an excited wiggle while he nodded his head. "Yes, the SUN, but there will be NO casting of Incendio or any other heat producing spells. But not to worry, you'll still get a proper 'explosion' of sorts today." Especially if they were to get the spell wrong on their first and second attempts.
But that is what the goggles were for.
"YES, thank you Mr. Summers," Airey said as he fumbled with the chalk to write the name of the spell on the board.
Good to see that Mr. Kinsley was still taking diligent notes. Airey gave him a small nod in approval.
He gave the Hufflepuff a small nod too. While he wasn't taking notes, at least he appeared to be an attentive listener.
What good role models Mr. Kinsley and Mr. Barrington were being! Taking notes like that. More students should take a page from their books and do the same.
Oooh, that WAS some creative thinking. Pity that it was entirely incorrect though. "Nothing quite so fancy, I'm afraid. Just a simple jab with your wand will do."
Now if he could just find HIS wand so he could demonstrate...
And here was Miss Starr being a star student and taking notes as well. Good to see. Or not see since he could hardly see two feet past the end of his nose.
Was he sure? Sure about what? And why was the Ravenclaw talking about elephants? Leave it to a Ravenclaw to ask something insanely....quirky? Was that even quirky? Airey settled for just squinting at the boy to try and make out his face to see if he was being serious or not with his question.
What did oliphaunts have to do with the topic at hand? Even if the man was impressed that the boy knew of Tolkien's works.
"Well...they DO say that they are as as fabulous and fearsome as dragons..."
"While we WILL require helium for this, we don't need to increase the amount for this project," he replied to the Ravenclaw. "Your suns will convert more than enough of it on their own.
Leaning against the blackboard, he gave the second year a quick salute. She would be fine once she got over her confidence issues, he was sure of it. So, no pressure on you, Miss Ella. Noooooo pressure at all.
Oh, good question. "You hopefully will not need to use other spells for this since we will be starting with more scoops of hydrogen. However, if you notice that the glow from your Sun is beginning to take on a redish glow, which is meant to simulate the red giant phase of the Sun's stellar evolution, you will need to make the correct adjustments."
"Very good, Miss Ella," he nodded towards the Head Girl. "Approximately 72% of gases that compose the sun are hydrogen."
90%? Sweet solstice that was a bit generous. "72%," he corrected the Gryffindor gently. "But yes, we will need more hydrogen for this experiment."
Stellar! More note taking. Airey squinted a bit as he gave Mr. Bay an approving nod.
Oh, someone was furiously taking notes. Even better than just taking notes. Or something.
Look how pretty his solar system was!
Wince. OUCH.
"Miss Newell, there is NO need to shout in my classroom. Indoor voices."
And now that he felt even deafer than before, it would be a miracle if he could hear any other questions students had.
"EEEH? What was that, son?" he asked Mr. Branxton as he leeeeeeaned forward a bit to try and catch the latter part of what the captain was saying. Was he asking the professor to iron his school uniform? Merlin he wished students would stay on topic today.
Oh, wait, no. Mr. Branxton was looking at the iron container on his station. "A VERY good question Mr. Branxton, and something that caused quite the debate at the turn of the century. There was a theory called the 'Iron Sun' in which it was proposed that the Sun's surface is actually iron. While there IS a small amount of iron in the Sun, because the Sun was made from a gas cloud which must have been enriched by the iron and other elements thanks to other stars. When the Sun runs out of hydrogen it will start fusing heavier and heavier elements together. Stars heavier than the Sun will continue this process until they make iron. Iron is the last element which when fused releases energy, heavier elements take an input of energy to fuse, so once a star has made iron there is no more energy available from nuclear fusion and it will die," he explained as he bobbed his head back and forth to a song that apparently only he could hear. "While no harm should come from you adding a bit of a sprinkle of iron with the other two elements, it is not required. We will be using the iron for when we create a planet."
"If you have a stuffy nose you may grab some tissues, Miss McAlistor," he said as he made a face at the Hufflepuff.
"Of course," he chuckled towards Miss Wisteria. And because he couldn't really salute he did a wink instead. "As I said to Miss Fischer, I hope you will not be required such intensive care with your Sun as some of you had to do with your stars. But one can't really predict precisely how the reaction will, well, react. So yes, perhaps you will need to use that spell."
Which is why he turned around to write it down on the board as well.
He ventured a glance towards Miss Cambridge and recalled the struggle she had had with her star - namely the fact that she had killed it. What had it's name been again? Joffery?
Airey chuckled. "Not a requirement for now," he said with a quick shake of the head.
Smiling at Miss Wayne briefly, he squuuuuuuuuinted around the classroom again to see if there were any more hands raised. Didn't seem like there were - not that he could see at least - so it was time to move on! TO ALL THE FUN STUFF!
"As several of you said, we will need to use more hydrogen when creating our versions of the Sun. The Sun burns several hundred million tons of hydrogen gas per second, so we will be using one scoop of helium and 5 scoops of hydrogen to help simulate this nuclear reaction." Key word being simulate, okay?
"So, without wasting more time on discussion and lecture, everyone put your goggles on and make sure your lab coats are buttoned," he instructed as he made sure that he was properly suited up. *
*obviously looking MUCH older than the lovely Dr. Horrible
"Now, using the measuring spoons at your station, scoop 1 scoop of helium and 5 scoops of hydrogen into your glass box. If you want to experiment a bit and use a pinch of iron you may, but it is not required," he continued as he did so with his own glass box, setting his solar system down on the table beside him. Oh, LOOK AT THAT! If his wand had been a basilisk he would have been dead by now. Had been there on his desk the entire time. HAHA. Funny. "The spell you will all need to perform is Fingere Elementi, and the wand movement is just a simple jab movement. If you have performed things correctly, and don't be discouraged if nothing happens on your first try, this spell will convert your powdered hydrogen and helium into gases and in doing so instantly trigger the elements to compress on their own and form your Sun that just floats there in your glass box. The color should be a brilliant white with perhaps a hint of yellow or orange. No need to close the lid during any of this."
He then turned and gave the blackboard a tap to draw attention to the other spells that MAY be needed to use, but were hopefully not going to be necessary.

Clearing his throat, the professor pointed his wand at the mix of powdered elements in his glass box. "Fingere Elementi," he commanded as he gave a firm jab with his wand. Instantly the powder turned into a gas and in a flash of light that was bright enough to hide the box's form for a brief moment before slowly fading and shrinking until it was about the size of an apricot. TADA! Easy as that. "When you are ready you may begin."
OOC: Time to make your Sun! You should have a minimum of 1 post for this activity. It is PERFECTLY alright for your character to not get this right on the first go. SMALL explosions are fine and your character can pull a MILD Seamus Finnigan, but please nothing too crazy. There should be NO serious injuries that require the Healer.
NO DYING IN ASTRONOMY, REMEMBER?!
Please DO interact with each other as well, either helping each other out or reacting to whatever chaos may ensue
You will have about 24 hours from the time of this post to complete this activity before the next one starts.
If you have any questions you can shoot me a VM or PM or directed them IC to Professor Flamsteed.
Did Caelen hear something about an explosion? Like if they didn't get this right? Because explosives were NOT fun when they were doing the exploding near you. In her not so humble opinion, she had a pretty little face, and it didn't need to go exploding. No, no, no.
Anyway, some Helium and some Hydrogen ought to do it. How did you put gas into powder form? Why, science? The little redhead was still amazed by the powder!gas as she scooped what she hoped was the correct amount in.
And wiping her goggle lens instead of her eye, the eleven year old laughed at herself slightly and thought for a second about something. They were allowed to experiment with Iron, yes? Because Caelen wanted to be dangerous today. But not too dangerous, she wanted eyebrows at the end of this. So she only put in two scoops. It was like that old raisin breakfast cereal. Two scoops! Except she scooped it with a lot less enthusiasm as the sun did in those commercials. She saw those before. They were terrifying.
It was officially sun-time. Which was awesome, because the girl with the itchy blue eye -it itched a lot from allergies- wanted to see some sun. And maybe hum a few sun related songs. Because she was punny.
"Fingere Elementi." She jabbed her wand -emphasis on JAB- and waited for a reaction. And boy she got one.
BRIGHT! A little too bright if you asked Caelen. But nobody ever asked her. It was... blue. That meant it was too hot. Or at least she thought. She was kind of blind right now as a side effect of staring directly at the sun for a few seconds. Or A sun because.. it wasn't ... oh, whatever.
She went up and read how to fix it. She would have to do that when she could see a little clearer. And scratch her stinking eye when she got out. Who in their right mind got WINTER allergies. Seriously? What was there in winter to even affect you?

Ohh, those spells. Penelope kinda remembered those now, though she didn't think she'd really done much with that particular assignment. Whoops. Oh well. At least they were on the board again so she could jot them down quickly. They were only using the Fingere Elementi one too, which was also good. One spell was better than trying to get all of those to work.
Pulling out her wand and trying to ignore any noise around her as others tried/failed/succeeded with their spells, the Gryffindor muttered the incantation under her breath, jabbing her wand every now and then for about a minute or so. That seemed like enough practice for her, especially since it seemed pretty simple.
Now for the scoops. She put in one scoop of helium and five of hydrogen as instructed and then grabbed her wand again. "Fingere elementi," she said, jabbing her wand once.
But...nothing happened.
Hm.
Penelope took a deep breath to steady her mind a bit more, continuing to try to tune out whatever everyone else was doing, and focused on just getting the element things to form a sun. Sort of a sun. Not a real one. Simulation. Whatever.
Focus.
Jab!wand. "Fingere Elementi."
And...boom, sun. BRIGHT sun, but then it was okay. It worked. Penelope grinned a little at her success.

"You'll get it." Confidence is key, yeah. Not that Ella was so great at that but she'd gotten much better. Mhm.
The blonde watched as the younger badger added in her Helium and Hydrogen, hoping she would manage the spell correctly. Especially since Lux had seemed so excited about Ella's sun. "A jab and that's the incantation, yup. Just concentrate and you'll be good." Grin!

Knowing that she had done it right so far and only needed to do a simple spell to finish, Lux felt more confident. Hopefully it would not be too hard to do the other things for this class, though it was a relief to know that if she got stuck, she had someone to ask her for help.
Concentrating on the sun that she wanted to create, Lux jabbed her wand at the powder in the box and said, "Fingere Elementi." Before her eyes, a little sun appeared.
SQUEEE!
She had done it.
Excitedly she bounced on her feet, her eyes wide. "I made a sun!" That was sooo cool. "I want to make more of them!" Too bad she was only supposed to make one.

Why would she need to be well to attend the lesson? Airey stuck his pinky finger in his ear and swirled it around to make sure that he heard her right. Which he was sure that he had, but he wasn't going to bother answering that. Wasn't it obvious you needed to be well to attend a lesson? Couldn't be coughing up a lung and taking notes after all.
So moving on.
"If you really did put your wand in your bag then it should be there," he nodded. Logic. "If you don't have your wand, then I'm afraid I will have to dismiss you from class, Miss Hyde and you will have to make up the work on your own time."

Jab…..jab….jab……jab….jab..jab
Now was time for him to practice the spell in his head before creating his own sun. Fingere Elementi….Fingere Elementi
He looked around to see how everyone else is doing… the whole lot seemed to be doing great… well at least Bay thought that.
Time to make my sun.. "Fingere Elementi" he cast as he saw the ingredients in the box come together…. and then a little ball of white light… Bay started at it… "oooooo pretty" he raised his hand "Professor…. does this look okay to you?" he wanted to make sure that this is what he was supposed to be seeing..

Then he turned back to Bay's and leaned down until his face almost touched the glass container's surface. "I know I can definitely see some yellow. I can't see any orange but then again my eyes aren't as good as it used to be." he told Bay.
"I'm sure when the Professor gets to us, he'll tell us whether we created our Suns correctly or not." Yep, the Professor would surely know.
Hearing an AWFUL lot of chit chattering going on between the two boys, the professor hobbled over to their work station and gave them both the old man stink eye as Mr. Bay spoke to him. "EH?" he asked as he hunched over a bit and leeeeeeeaned over sloooooowly so his ear was practically on the boy's face. "Gray? No. It doesn't look gray to me at all. Perhaps the slightest hint of Stil de grain yellow, but certainly not gray."

Sweet solstice! What was that?
"Alright there, Miss Colbert?" he asked as he peered towards her box. Well, someone did something wrong by the looks of things.

Okay, okay, sooo...Sophie needed to get started on this Sun--and quickly at that. She picked up the measuring spoon at her station and collected one scoop of helium and five scoops of hydrogen. She added them into her glass box. Did she want to experiment with the iron? Hmm. Yes and no. Yes, she was curious to see what happened, but no, she didn't really have enough time.
Skipping that little optional step, Sophie looked toward the professor and listened as he described the incantation and wand movement they needed to use. So was she ready for that now? This was all she needed to do?
Following instructions Ana buttoned her lab coat up and grabbed the goggles that until now had been laying forgotten on her desk. She pushed her hair back slightly before putting them on, wishing she had a mirror so she could survey the look. She was sure she looked very science-y. They should get to wear stuff like this more often.
Oh no. Measuring spoons. This reminded her slightly of baking. Did they have to get exact measurements for this too? Because Ana so wasn't good at that. Holding the spoon above her glass box she slowly, and very carefully measured out one scoop of helium, before tipping it into the box. She sighed quietly once that was done. Now to measure the Hydrogen. Her progress was slow going as she made sure to get the exact same amount onto the spoon for each scoop she was placing into the box. When done she placed the spoon and the Hydrogen back in their original positions before grabbing a small pinch of iron. They were told they could so she might as well do it.
That done Ana looked back down at her notes, looking for the spell she needed to use, unholstering her wand as she did so. "Fingere Elementi," Ana muttered to herself a few times before she decided she had the pronunciation down and could attempt the spell. She didn't bother with practicing the wand movement since a jab really wasn't all that hard to do. "Fingere Elementi," Ana cast, jabbing her wand at the powder in her box. At first she thought nothing was going to happen, and was worried she'd have to cast the spell again, but then her sun formed.
Ana beamed as she examined her little sun in the box. It was so tiny and cool. Best experiment ever.

Sophie gripped her wand in her hand and held it forward. With a jab, she said, "Fingere Elementi!" The mixture turned a brilliant white with just a bit of yellow mixed in. Sophie stepped back a bit but carefully eyed her project. If this thing was going to turn into a Sun, she didn't want to be too close when it happened.
The separate powders began to compress, leading Sophie to believe that yes, this was indeed going to turn into a Sun. She watched as the mixture continued to compress. Finally, she was looking at a distinct ball--a Sun--floating before her. She started to fist pump but sort of felt as if her entire back might give out if she did so. Merlin...where had youth gone and how could she get it back?!

He didn’t need to be told twice. Experiments and activities were so much better than boring lectures, therefore Andrew straightened up on his stool and buttoned his lab gown and wore his safety goggles.
First step.
The seventh year carefully scooped one scoop of powdered Helium and dumped it inside his clear box, and then he added 5 scoops of powdered Hydrogen. Not adding the Iron for now, since he wanted to familiarize himself with the whole process first before doing madexperiments on his own. Safety is key. Yep.
Then comes the wand work. “Fingere Elementi” he repeated the spell over and over again before getting his wand out. Spell, then, jab.
“Fingere Elementi.” Wand!Jab. Badam tss. Nothing happened. Andrew scratched the back of his head, wondering what went wrong. The spell and wand movement was easy…even a first year can do it, so why can’t he?
…oh.
Intent. He forgot that. Concentrating hard and imagining the powdered stuff combining, Andrew got his wand ready for the jab. “Fingere Elementi!” and with a jab of his wand, the powdered substance turned to gas…and bright light! Andrew had to squint and lean back as he watched the bright light die down a little, making small popping sounds in the process. “Wowzers.” He actually made a replica of the sun.
Too cool, this was.

Uh-huh. Riiiiight. Okay. Tobias was taking down notes like nobody's business, but it was kinda hard, because he couldn't really hear Airey all that well. The third year managed to fill in the gaps by glancing over at Ella's notes, however, and was soon ready to get started.
First he got all kitted out in the right gear; a process that took rather longer than it should have but, you know, slow bones.
His own sun though, wooooow. This should be mighty cool. Or hot. 'Cause fire.
Toby watched those around him for a second before getting to work, just wanting to observe, y'know, He grabbed the scoops and measured one scoop of helium and five of hydrogen into his glass box. He deliberated for a short while over using iron, too, but decided against it, deciding to keep it simple for now.
Now for the spell.
Tobias grabbed his wand and pointed it at the stuff in the glass jar. He took another glance around at the others before attempting the spell. "Fingere Elementi."
...
...
... nothing.
Hm. Tobias frowned for a moment, trying to work out what he'd done wrong. He squinted at the box and then his wand and almost literally facepalmed when he realised he'd forgotten the actual wand movement. Doiiiii.
Okay, so...
"Fingere Elementi!"Jab!
There was a flash of light, just like when Airey had cast his spell, and Tobias slammed his eyes shut at the sudden brightness. He peeked through his eyelids again and saw that he was now, in fact, in possession of a small sun.
"Coooool."

Mo was wearing goggles. They were excellent goggles, and they matched his embroidered lab coat, but they were NOT the same prescription as his glasses and they made everything look like it was at the bottom of the lake. He blinked at his classmates, and then he blinked at his three jars.
Which, unfortunately, all looked the same at the bottom of the lake. Sigh.
Mo pulled up his goggles and eyed the jars again, setting them quickly in order on the desk alphabetically. Helium first, then Hydrogen, and then Iron waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over there where he wouldn't accidentally pick it up and add it to his little bitty sun. Back on went his goggles, and then Mo couldn't find his scoop.
Double sigh. He patted around blindly until his hand ran into the scoop, and then he patted with the other hand to find his glass jar. Once everything was within easy reach and right where it needed to be, Mo carefully scooped the materials into the jar. One scoop of helium. Five scoops of hydrogen. No iron, because he forgot where he put it. Now then... where was his wand?
Setting the jar and scoop back on the table, Mo patted down his pockets until he came up with his wand, which he pointed at the jar, murmuring, "Fingere Elementi." And nothing happened. He was obviously very gifted at this magic thing, since it was a basic spell that he'd performed correctly as a younger wizard. Of course, last time, he hadn't been pointing his wand at an empty jar.
Redirecting his wand at the correct jar, Mo tried the spell again. "Fingere Elementi." This time, there was a poof as the star burst into being, burning bright enough for even Mo to see it. He whipped off his goggles and threw them on the table in despair. Useless things.
Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something...
Alright they were to do something with these jars. Jab the wand inside? Was that what he said? Bart glanced around and saw jabbing happening so he jabbed at the glass, but nothing was happening. "I think mines broken" He continued to jab at the glass. Something about this didn't seem right. Oh wait they needed gas, because the sun was just gas wasn't it? He really couldn't remember, but he knew he had some so he turned putting he behind near the jar and letting one loose.
Turning quickly he jabbed the jar again. Really his was broken. Looking up he heard screaming.. What were they screaming about? But as he looked up he noticed the board. Oh right a spell. Jabbing again "Fingere Elementi." He looked at his jar. Well it didn't smell like a sun, he waved that smell to the person next to him. It didn't look like a sun either.
What did he do wrong? Maybe not enough gas? He could fix that.

Marigold was SUPER PUMPED BECAUSE she was making a STAR and she was naming it STELLAAAAAAAAAAA for obvious reasons. (Those reasons were that it was a star. Duh). She took her jars and scooped a little helium. Then five scooooooops of hydrogen.
Scoop was SO FUN TO SAY. SCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP.
Anyway, incantation time. She practiced a bit first. "Fingere Elementi. Fingere Elementi." It was simple enough. Taking her wand and making a few experimental jab/sword thrusts, she decided she could try.
"Fingere Elementi!" she said, getting a little overexcited and waving the wand instead of jabbing. That would explain why she didn't see Stella anywhere. Pout.
Okaaaaay "FINGERE ELEMENTI!!!!" she said with a SHARP jab. She blinked and all of a sudden THERE WAS A STAR IN FRONT OF HER. STELLLLLLAAAAAAA.

These goggles made her feel very professional. Pulling them down over her eyes, Alice made serious faces into the side of her box, admiring how intolerant of nonsense her reflection looked. Maybe she needed a pair of glasses full time, 'cause she could work those things. Damn.
Did this eye equipment do funny things to their vision, though? The labels on her jars all seemed blurry, and she had to get close enough to press her nose against the glass to read them. Upon finding the one labeled 'Helium', she patted around the lab table blindly until she found her sco- oh, no, that was Mo's face. 'Scuse her. THERE was the scoop.
One big ladleful of the powdered element went in. She felt around blindly for the Hydrogen, this time avoiding whacking any of Cactus' appendages in the process, and tugged it closer to her. Five scoops of this, yes? After those were dumped in, Alice groped for the Iron. Of course, she'd experiment with a pinch of that. For science. When was it not?
Hmm. Now where was her wand?
"You stole my wand." Her attempt to point an accusing finger at Mo was affected slightly by the fact that she was turned the other way, but it was still valid. Give it back, Branxton. She needed that.

"YOU ALRIGHT MR. ATREYU?!" he called from the other side of the laboratory as he waved his cane in the air somewhat frantically - not close enough to anyone or anything to actually make contact, of course. "REMEMBER I SAID NO DYING IN ASTRONOMY?! DON'T YOU RED SHIRT ON ME!"
Hobbling towards the "dying" Gryffindor, his cane clanking against the ground as he moved, he gave the two Hufflepuffs and quick approving nod. Excellent excellent.
Now, on to back to this situation...

Ben sat back in his chair to recover, a lick your wounds sort of move without, thankfully, having any wounds. He did however have pain especially when the professor yelled across the room to see if he was alright. Both of the boy's arms quickly going up to cover his ears to try and block out the loud sound. It wasn't all too successful however, as he made a pained face at the discomfort and ringing that he was getting in response.
Dying? Red Shirt?
Huh?
What was the man trying to ask him?
"No...no dying," the Gryffindor finally answered, his mind settling on that word. Not unless one could die from being exposed to really loud noises. So much for having a good class.

The temporarily blind Alice tried to feel around for her lab partner so she could make him return her wand, but after flailing her arms through the air a couple of times and making a complete fool out of herself, she realized Mo wasn't there. Had he run AWAY? Was he scared of her?
Should have been. Wands were serious business.
She turned around in her seat to face him, hands all ready for hitting, when her fingers grazed the table and, after a few seconds, rested on her wand. Oh. There it was. Ahem. The seventh year wrapped her fingers around it and tried to play off the last few minutes of frantic accusations as if they were a joke, clearing her throat and refocusing her efforts on her glass box. Or what she thought was her glass box.
"Fingere Elementi." Her jab was a bit too forceful and resulted in another elbow popping noise, but Alice ignored the pain. All of her attention was currently directed towards the powder-turned-gas. She may have not been able to see the results clearly, but that flash of light was enough for even her suddenly lacking eyes to notice.
Little itty bitty baby apricot sun. Could she touch it?

Ah...here was the Professor. But then Sander took a step back when the Professor gave both Bay and him a stern look. Was he upset that they were having a discussion about whether Bay had indeed successfully created his own sun? Sander gulped and quickly returned to his work desk, and resumed looking at his own sun.
And what was this about Bay's sun being grey in color. Sander quickly glanced inside Bay's glass container. Nope it was still white and with a hint of yellow in it. He shot Bay a quizzing look before quickly turning his attention back to his own glass container.
Beverly had suited up since the lesson started. Staying safe and alive was her first priority, right after homework, of course. Goggles on and lab coat buttoned, she took notes of what professor Airey was saying.
Then it was time to practice the spell. Withdrawing her wand Beverly stared at it for a moment. Don't fail her now. She wanted a sun and impressing professor Airey wouldn't be bad either. "Fingere Elementi," she tried out. It didn't sound so hard. But with the way her memory was going, repeating it a few more times wouldn't be such a bad idea. No need to cause an explosion.
"Fingere Elementi... Fingere Elementi." Not bad, not bad. "Fingere... Elementi."
Beverly felt positive she had it now. The wand movement was fairly simple; a jab. She was good a jabbing. Jab, jab, JAB.
She was forgetting the most important thing; adding the powders in the glass box! HA. HA. That could have RUINED HER. BAH. Pretending to not have forgotten she scooped up a scoop of helium and then added five of hydrogen. There. Now she could do the spell bit.
"Fingere Elementi," she said, followed by a firm jab of her wand. Here comes the sun...
No it didn't. Nothing happened. The powder was still powder and she didn't have her SUN. Hiisss.
Again. "Fingere Elementi."
Zilch.
Growing frustrated Beverly glared at the jar, then poured everything into her incantation. "Fingere Elementi!"
Still glaring, she watched as the powders fused, creating a bright yellow/orange sphere at the center of the jar. She did it! Oh my Merlin, she did it!
Michael still had his parchment cone in his ear and while he could hear some of the instructions that Airey was giving he could not make out everything the man was saying.
The instructions were 1 scoop of helium and 5 scoops of hydrogen poured into the glass box. What Michael heard was 1 scoop of helium and 9 scoops of hydrogen.
It was probably lucky that Airey wrote the incantation and the wand movement on the board because the incantation he had heard was 'Finger Elemantry.'
So now that all that was sorted, the third year placed 1 scoop of helium and 9 scoops of hydrogen into his glass box. He said the incantation a couple of times just to get the hang of saying it and when he was confident enough even though he could not hear himself speak, he decided to try it out.
"Fingere Elementi." He then gave his wand a jab. For a second nothing happened and then...
BOOM!
Michael threw himself off his stool and covered his head with his hands.
Laura looked at the Professor, she was very confused now. "I swear Professor I put it in my bag." Laura looked at the Professor then had an idea, tipping the bag and everything that was in it all over the floor she looked down and suddenly saw her wand in her pocket. "Oh it was in my pocket the whole time." Laura wondered why she had put it there.
Now did she have to pick up the mess on the floor or was the Professor going to be a gentlemen and pick it up for her. "Anyway Professor why do we need to use our wand to draw up plans like you said we had to." Laura was really confused about that.
Oichi took note that suns hydrogen content was a little less then she thought. Soon after she heard the professor talking about the activity of making a mini sun and before long it was time to try it for heself. she took out her wand and pointed it at the glass box with the powdered elements of helium and hydrogen. She then jabbed at it, "fingere elemente", she concentrated and soon she saw a little ball of light appear in the glass box. She smiled gleefully at it. I did, I did it, now just to keep this little sun alive. She then saw the ball fading a little but could not quite remember the spell to use for that.
"Alright there, Miss Colbert?" he asked as he peered towards her box. Well, someone did something wrong by the looks of things.
"Heh... yeah, I'm fine." Adrienne said, grinning nervously at her empty box. Was it going to work if she tried it again? She wanted a mini sun just like everyone else, but she also didn't want to, like, burn her face off. Still, she seemed to be one of the only ones who'd ended up with an explosion, so maybe it was just the luck of the draw? In that case, she'd definitely like to try again to see if it worked. Busying herself filling up her box again with five scoops of hydrogen, one of helium, and what the heck, she added a little bit of iron as well. Maybe that would help.
Adrienne stood back from the box this time, pointing her wand at it from as far away as possible. "Fingere Elemente!" she said, immediately flinching at the flash of light that showed up, but when she didn't smell any smoke, she cautiously opened one eye. Well, hey! To her surprise, there was now a sort of small but distinctly star-looking ball of gas floating in her box. Fascinated, she moved closer and examined it.
Blinking hard to get the allergin and the bright light out of her eyes, Caelen quickly looked at the spell to make her too bright sun less bright. And she tried to work quickly. Because she didn't want to be the second person to have a BANG happen. That would be awkward. And possibly dangerous.
"Dextrini Potitus!" Jab in a downward motion the spell said. And she did just that, because... well.. instructions. They were good for things. And luckily, the spell seemed to work. Yeah, things weren't about to explode! She was more than a little happy for that fact. Because she liked her eyebrows. Eyebrows were fun things to have.
And hey, if you had the Hydrogen and Helium, you could actually make your own little sun. Well, IF you had the ingredients. And the redhead didn't know of any stores that sold powdered elements. Was there a special store for this? Did these stores exist?
But hey, the sun was apricot size now. Even though she had only really eaten them in Hogwarts and really had no idea what the real size of an apricot was. But... apricot. Sure. That was about the size of them, right?

HE SAW THAT!
Marching Hobbling with purpose over to Mr. Branxton, Airey squuuuuuuinted at the Ravenclaw captain. "Mr. Branxton, when I was your age we had to walk 8 kilometers to school, up hills both ways, in the snow and rain, while we fought off Velociraptors. For lunch we had to walk another 5 kilometers and then swim 2. After we got there, we only had 5 minutes to eat then we had to start off again to make it back in time AND we respected out laboratory equipment NOT to throw it on the table as you have just done."
He would have told the boy to apologize to the goggles, but that was just absurd.

The professor just stared at the boy. Tactics were a bit odd, but as long as he was protecting himself he couldn't really complain. The boy WAS alive still, right?
"Look alive, Mr. Toussaint," he said, er, slightly commanded as he poked him in his right side with his cane.

Right. So if she had put it in her bag then it should still be there, yeah? He continued to tap his wand against the floor somewhat impatiently as Miss Hyde fumbled around looking for her wand...only to find that it had been in her pocket the entire time.
"You are not drawing plans, Miss Hyde," he said as he gave a nod towards the board where the instructions were written. "As you can see, the rest of your classmates have been busy creating their stars that will serve as the Sun in their solar systems. If you require assistance catching up, I suggest you ask one of your classmates."
Because he really could not stand up for too much longer. Chair in the front of the room was calling to him. Loudly. Caaaaaaaaaalling.

Once the man was back in front of the classroom, he used his wand to summon two large boxes full of dried foliage and small stones from the greenhouses and the Tower Patch - everything from flowers to branches to grass clippings that may or may not have come from the quidditch pitch to leaves. "By now all of you should have your 'Sun' created. If not..." MISS HYDE. "...please do so BEFORE moving on to this next part. You will also be creating your first planet today. Just creating, the theory part of planet formation will be covered next time. I would like you all to come up here and pick one piece of foliage or two from the box on the right and a small stone from the one on the left. Once you have made your selection, I want you all to grab the container of powdered iron and, using your mortar and pestle at your station, grind up everything into a fine powder. Two scoops of the iron, if you will. The stones may take a few good whacks with your pestle, but should break down rather easily. Repeat the same spell as you did with your 'Sun', and toss the swirling ball that forms with your 'Sun' and close the lid on your box. Make sure it is shut tight."
OOC: I am so sorry for the slight delay guys >___< thank you all for your patience <3
You should have a minimum of 3 posts for this activity and complete the following steps:
select some foliage from one box
pick a small stone from the other box
add two scoops of iron to the mortar
grind up the above three items into a powder
perform Fingere Elementi again
TADA! PLANET!
Should your character do all this correctly, their planet should not be larger than their 'Sun'. Orbiting around the 'Sun' will not begin just yet either, but some short jagged counter-clockwise movements could happen.
close the lid on the glass box
You will have at least 48 hours to complete this activity You CAN catch up and do the first activity of making the 'Sun' if you missed your chance.
As always, any questions can be directed to me OOC via PM/VM or IC to Professor Flamsteed.
