Apparition Testing

Cale was back! This time, he had a number of test booklets with him, stacked neatly on a table next to his whiteboard. There was a large partition in the middle of the room splitting it in half - on the side Caleb was standing on, there were a number of desks all set up. The other side of the screen was set up in a sort of obstacle course containing hoops, holes and other obstacles. The charm had already been lifted so they could apparate in the hall, but not out of it, as usual. He had a few instructions written already on the board:

Quote:

Welcome back!

1. Please grab the written portion of the exam and begin whenever you are ready. There is a 2 hour time limit on the test, although I'm sure everyone will finish before that time.

2. After you have taken the written portion of the exam, please wait until it is graded by one of the apparition instructors. Once you have been OKed to take the practical portion, you may begin the practical portion. The practical portion must be completed in THIS order:
  • Begin by apparating from the front of the room to the back of the room
  • After completing that, apparate to one of the three hoops that are located 20 feet in front of you. Choose any one you'd like
  • After landing successfully in the hoop, select one of the various obstacles and apparate over it - there are large puddles approximately 50 feet wide, 20 foot deep potholes, and 30 foot wide pools of lava (don't worry, the lava is not real!)
  • Apparate into any one of the three hoops once again
  • Return to Cale or Misa to be examined and assure there is no splinching

You have approximately 3 hours to complete the entire testing process.
Everything was set up, he just needed some testers!

OOC: STEPS ON HOW TO TEST AND GET YOUR LICENSE:

You should have a total of SIX posts at the MINIMUM. You need at least ONE post for each of the steps of the practical portion (including returning to Cale to check for splinching) as well as RPing your character coming in and sitting down to take the test. Simply click the link in the post above to take the quiz patch! Once I grade your test, I will post Cale responding and giving you the IC ok to start practical testing.

Remember, any splinching is an AUTOMATIC FAIL. I will not RP Cale saying that you splinched UNLESS you specifically post in your RPs that you splinched. By doing that, you acknowledge that your character will NOT pass and will have to retest at the Ministry over the IC summer break. Misa Woods (DuckyLinJi) can also check you over for splinching and grade your practical portion.

If you did not RP in the Apparition Lesson, you will not be allowed to test. I will be checked to assure that each character who tests here DID complete the lesson!

Once you pass, you may RP your charrie leaving. This post will be open for the next 72 hours - ish. Probably a bit longer. After the tests are completed apparition licenses will be entered into the profiles of those who passed!

Sander nervously walked into the testing room. He walked over to the now familiar instructor and greeted him. "Hello Mr. Newell. I'm reporting in to take the apparation licensing test," he nervously smiled at the instructor before picking up a test booklet and walking over to a row of desks.

He sat down, took a deep breath, then flipped open the booklet and began reading it over. Then he picked up his quill and started filling out his answers into the booklet provided.

The instructor had said that if he didn't pass this portion he wouldn't be able to continue to the practical portion of the test, so Sander decided to take his time and review every question and answer he gave before finally submitting the booklet in to be marked.

So, it was here. Tag was actually going to take the apparition test now. Even though he'd gotten it down he'd really wished they had more time to practice the technique until a perfection, you know. But anyway, Tag felt okay about it, not great, but ok. Which was better than feeling ill prepared all the while.

Tag walked into the great hall, found the Instructor and went over to him. Out of kindness and manners, Tag simply nodded at him. If he spoke or something his food might make a friendly visit, and he wanted to avoid that at all costs. He glanced around for a second before tasting the test and took it back to him to where he found himself a desk near the back.

He got out a quill and started to pour over the questions. This might take some time. After quite some time of going over and over the questions Tag looked at his answers and hesitated before turning them in. He gave them another quick look over before giving it back to the Instructor.

Tessa stepped into the hall and let out a breath. She could do this- that's what she kept telling herself. She had been very comfortable with apparating by the end of the practice session- she just had to remember that sensation as she did it today.

"Hello Sir," she said, nodding at the man who had talked to them about apparating the last time. "I'm Tessa Hedge, reporting for my test," she said with a nod to the man. She walked over to one of the desks next, taking out her quill and ink as she stared down at the booklet.

She hated tests- she would have much preferred to move onto the practical portion first- but, rules were rules. She shot a reassuring grin over to Sander and then returned her attention to the test.

Oichi entered the testing hall feeling confident that she was ready to smoke her apparition exam. Upon entering she saw the testing rules and put them to memory and then saw the people from the lessons, "Hi, Oichi Paulidine reporting for my apparition test. She then received a testing bullet and took a seat and got started.

To say Terry was nervous would be an understatement. There had been only a few occasions in his life that he had felt the butterflies in his stomach and not in a good way. This, apart from taking his OWL's last year, would have to be one of the worst.

He was confident in his abilities, that he'd be able to pass the exam and there was still the thought that if he didn't, he'd be able to do it over the summer anyway. That wasn't too much longer, was it? But the boy had only just become of age and he was excited to be able to have the freedom of apparating all over the place. He walked into the exam room with a gulp, scanning his eyes around for signs of what he was supposed to do next. The sixth year sent over a friendly nod to the instructor, out of politeness and almost as reassurance to himself. He wouldn't let them attempt the examination if he wasn't confident in their abilities, right? He spotted the exam papers and approached them, picking one up and bringing it back to his desk.

He withdrew his quill and resisted the urge to chew on it as he studied the questions intently. It wasn't so bad. He'd done a lot of revision over the past few days and the answers seemed to have sunk in. Hopefully anyway. He was writing for a while, the exact time length he was unsure of but he was sure that he had taken less than 2 hours. Once he was finished with his exam paper he closed it up and submitted it to the examiners to be marked.

Fingers crossed. And now onto the practical element.

Finally

Here Nigel was ready to take his apparition test. Practical and written. Nigel was confident it was be easier then getting his muggle driver license. That was a little bit of a pain. But so worth it in the end. Now time for this license.

Nigel walked into the hall and saw the instructor plus the instructions on the board. Okay the written part was first and the test did not seem that hard. Lava was pretty awesome. Even though it was not real. Shame.

The Prefect went over to get a test booklet and brought it over to an empty seat. Nigel glanced at the questions with his quill out and knew some would need some thinking. Before long he had the booklet complete and gave them back to the instructor. Part One complete.

After struggling to accomplish apparation in the lesson, Ascanius was a little leery of taking his exam. Sure, he'd be fine in there because he always seemed to rise to the occasion, right? Yeah. Exactly. He'd be fine. At least that was what he had been telling himself all morning.

'Cept, when he finally walked into the room he felt his heart constrict really quickly before swallowing down that nervousness and walking in. At least, swallowing all that he could.

Once he entered, he didn't say a word and just grabbed the pamphlet. With a little bit more calm he answered all of the questions.

As soon as he was done, he handed it back to the instructor and prepared for the hard part.

Oh my, they were coming in fast now, weren't they? Cale smiled and handed the boy his quiz booklet. He was surprised that a few moments later, he was handing it back to him! What a speedy test taker. Cale took his wand and ran it lightly over the booklet, and a small score appeared in blue letters over the booklet before flashing and vanishing once more.

"Perfect score! Good job, you may proceed to the practical portion," he said with a smile.

Should Cale really have been surprised that his former house had such smart people? Obviously not. He grinned at the Gryffindor. "Another pass. You can proceed," he said before adding hers to the pile of graded books.

"Good job! Proceed," he told the Ravenclaw with a smile.

Caterina was really super nervous again. She'd managed to get this thing down somehow during the practice and lesson, but now that it was time to actually take the test, she felt panic stricken all over. The biggest part she was worried about was the concentration, but as long as she could keep herself to herself and try hard and not lose any body parts, she would be good, right? "Hello, Mr. Newell." Cat smiled (only just a bit nervously) at the man as she took one of the testing booklets and picked a seat up in the front. She liked to be in the front of the classroom, it was closer to the exit. She slipped her glasses on carefully. Unlike loads of her schoolmates, she didn't need them because she was getting old, she'd just always needed them for extended reading.

After she answered the questions, reread and checked her choices, Caterina returned to the front to hand over her booklet. It was too bad that the part she felt easiest about with this whole thing was now over. Eep.

WHOA. Just one wrong answer. Tag was surprised at himself. Even rose his eyebrows when the instructor had told him that. Wow. That was impressive. For him. Only missed one question. Which meant he passed, at least this part of the apparition testing. That lifted Tag's spirits. He could do this.

He quickly glanced at the board next to the instructor and made sure he remembered what his first task was. Apparate from the front of the building to the back of the building. Tag went to the opposite side of the hall, where lots of things, and not desks, had been set up.

Wait, he was supposed to go from here to the back of the room? Tag tried to get on his tip toes. He needed a specific design on the floor to do this. That's how he'd been practicing. From here, though, it was hard to do that, wasn't it? No worries. He could do this. The blonde had this.

Then he remembered, there was some odd crack on the end of the hall. All he needed to do was see it. The boy stood from his spot and imagine the small crack, pictured it inside his mind. Once he felt good with that idea he started with the entire Three D's working into his head.

Determination. Deliberation and Destination. His entire mind focused on that. Afterwards he pictured his entire being transporting itself to the opposite side of the room, transporting there and landing by or nearby that spot he was determining in his mind.

That spot was Tag's new hoop.

Slamming his eyes shut Tag thought of the spot as best as he could before he felt his feet lift off the ground, and that weird sucking, being pulled at every angle, and losing his breath feeling came to him. Almost as soon as he started feeling all of that his feet slammed hard onto the floor, taking a small step forward, near the spot he had pictured in his mind.

He'd take that as a success.

West went and settled down to take the written portion... and breezed through it relatively fast. The test booklet was more intimidating closed than open. It wasn't hard, and it wasn't like he wasn't prepared and all...

... so as soon as that was done he got up and waited in the line that had seemingly formed. Waiting to know if he could attempt the practical portion or not.

Sander breathed a sigh of relief when he was told he had received a perfect score on his written test. Smiling gratefully at the instructor, he got up from his desk to begin the practical portion of it.

All he had to do now was to complete the tasks assigned by Mr. Newell, apparate successfully without splinching and he would get his license to apparate. He read the instructions on the board before walking to the other side of the room.

He had to first apparate from the front of the room to the back of it. Sander walked all the way to the front of the room, before turning around to look at the other end of the room. He took a couple of breaths to clear his mind. Then he focussed on his destination. He visualized himself disappearing from where he was currently standing and then appearing instantaneously at the back of the room.

"I need to move from here to there....from here to there." he kept whispering softly to himself even as he concentrated on how he was going to make that happen.

When he was ready to apparate, he closed his eyes, moved his left foot back and turned on the spot. Immediately, he felt the now familiar twisting and moving sensation. One second he felt it, the next second the feeling was gone....and then POP!!

Sander opened his eyes and quickly looked to see where he was now standing at. He breathed a sigh of relief to find that he had successfully apparated to the back of the room. Then he quickly examined himself to make sure he was in still intact and all in one piece, which to his relief he was.

He had completed the first task successfully. Now on to the next one.

Testing time. Oooooooooooooooooo, Merlin!! That was exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time! But Sophie was smiliinnngggg!!! Because apparating was awesome and she quite enjoyed it. It'd be amazing to be able to do that without having to depend on other people. Woooo!!

She entered the Great Hall and read the instructions on the board. Riiighty right! Grabbing a test booklet, she sat down at one of the desks and took the written test.

It sure did not take Sophie 2 hours to finish the written portion, and as soon as she was done with it, she queued up to hand the test in and wait for the permission to start the practical part.

This one had taken a bit longer to test, but no matter. He'd passed with flying colors. Cale smiled and added his completed test to the passed pile. He hoped he wouldn't have a failed pile...

"Good job! Onto practical testing with you!"

Theo was excited to get going with this exam, and he had actually revised for it as well! That, like, never happened. As soon as he got into the testing room, the nerves started to settle in, though. At least the exam was the first thing to get out of the way. Theo wasn't too scared about that. He took a seat and whizzed through the exam. It took him just over an hour and 20 minutes to complete it, after getting stuck on a couple.

No biggie, though!

It was the explanations that took him extra long. Theo sucked with words on paper. Once he was relatively happy with his answers, he got up and went to the front to hand his paper in. Ooooookay, nervous now.

Please don't fail!

"No, sir. I can handle them." West said casually. No trouble. And hell, why not get them some brownie points with their dad, and maybe also sweeten the guy up to pass him with flying colours right? "They even helped clean a bunch of school brooms the other day, and they both get up for early practices no trouble."

Nod.

And pass? Great. Next step then. West smiled at Mr Newell and then headed over to the practical testing area.

Sander walked up and stood in front of three hoops lying on the ground 20 feet away from him. From what he read on the board, he had to only pick one to apparate into. Sander looked at the hoops before deciding to apparate into the one on his extreme left.

Once he had made his decision, he kept his focus on that one hoop, totally blocking out the presence of the other two hoops. He visualized himself disappearing from where he was standing and immediately appearing right in the middle of the hoop to the left of him. Sander concentrated as hard as he could. Even though he had apparated into hoops before, he knew that he couldn't take his previously successful attempts for granted.

So he took his time as he continued to focus on what he intended to do. 'From here...to inside there. I need to move from here to there.' Sander kept thinking to himself even as he visualized himself doing what he was strongly determined to do. Taking a deep breath and slowly releasing it, Sander closed his eyes and keeping that image of him leaving where he was currently standing and appearing in the hoop 20 feet away, he moved his left foot back and turned on the spot.

Sander felt himself twist and turn and then suddenly POP!!...everything stopped moving. He slowly opened his eyes and immediately looked down. He was standing in the center of a hoop but which hoop? Sander quickly turned his head to his right and breathed a sigh of relief when he counted two hoops on the ground next to the right of him. He had successfully apparated into the hoop on his extreme left.

As he stepped out of the hoop, Sander carefully examined himself to make sure that he hadn't splinched. He looked over to where he had originally apparated from and was glad that he couldn't see anything on the floor. Satisfied that he himself was intact, Sander finally allowed himself to relax. He had successfully completed the 2nd task.

Cat hadn't realized she'd been nervous about this part until the man told her that she'd passed and she grinned at him. "Thank you, sir." EEP! Not really wanting to freak out in front of him, Caterina hurried over to the place that was set apart from everyone who was still taking their tests. She nervously balled up her hands, digging her nails into her palms. This was going to be cool, it was. Smooth sailing, all she needed to do was concentrate. At least she had a good memory, if not a good concentration. That meant she didn't have to go back and peek at the board to make sure she was doing everything in the correct order.

The first thing. She needed to go from this side of the room to the other side of the room. Not into hoops or on lily pads or in swamps, just to the other side of the room. Right. Okay. Phewww. Deep breathing. She relaxed her hands, wiggling her fingers for bloodflow and started to think of the other side of the room. She managed to picture it in her mind easily enough, but it still took longer for her to gather her courage and her concentration. Really, though. If she could manage to do this, she could manage basically anything. Concentration had always been her downfall. This really wasn't as big of a deal as she was making it, right? It was part of the magic that she'd been born with, that she was going to have for the rest of her life. She could totally do this.

She'd been standing there a while longer than she wanted to, but Caterina finally felt like she was ready to begin. She had a few hours to do this, right? She wasn't pushing herself in the wrong direction. She could clearly picture herself standing where she was now and in the blink of an eye, standing across the room. She wanted it, she willed it. There was no denying that uncomfortable feeling, and as unpleasant as it was, she knew what it meant. Caterina opened her eyes and bounced around in a little circle. She'd done it! One part down, four to go!

Sander left the hoops and walked over to what seemed to him, the most difficult of all challenges. He was supposed to apparate over one of the obstacles in front of him. He had a choice of apparating over large puddles about 50 feet wide, or over 20 feet deep potholes, or lastly, over pools of lava, 30 feet wide.

Neither choices sounded, or looked pleasant to him. Each one of them had their degree of difficulty. The puddles, albeit the least dangerous, was also the widest to apparate over. He had a long way to fall if he missed apparating over the potholes, and Sander knew that if he failed, he would be walking out of that classroom....if he could walk out...with a very serious injury. The 30 wide pools of lava was no walk in the park either.

Sander decided to explore his options carefully before making a final decision.

Oichi smiled as she was told she passed the written portion of her exam. She then remembered it was time for the real work and she felt anxious but did her best to stay calm as she walked to the back of the room. She took a deep brel th to calm herself enough focus. She then closed her eyes and concentrated intentlyr on making it from one side of the room to the other. She then willed the magic within her to take her there and with a pop she made it in one piece. She opened her eyes and saw she had made it from the front to the back of the room. She felt elated and could not wait t.o rock the rest of the exam

A slight weight was lifted off Terry's shoulders as he received his marks back for his practical paper. He passed, thank Merlin. The couple of days revision had done him good. But the next element was where it would start to get difficult. He didn't doubt his abilities but that didn't stop him from getting nervous. It was an important test, he wanted that license and he really didn't want to have the slight shame of having to test again at the Ministry. He smiled at the instructor, grateful for being given the indication to move on.

Making sure to glance at the board before he moved to the front wall of the room, Terry absorbed all the instructions into his head so he wouldn't have to keep squinting over to see what came next. All he had to do was apparate from one side to the other. No having to transfer rooms. It wasn't so hard, was it?

He closed his eyes shut and thought about his desired destination. It was only feet away, not miles. He could do this. He could definitely do this. Once he had his destination firmly in his mind, he thought about the other two D's, determination and deliberation before he felt that now familiar feeling in his stomach.

Awesome!!

He past. It would have been a serious disappointment if he did fail. Knowing he was a student leader and all. Still weird thinking about it. Alright back to the fun of getting an apparition license. Front of the room to the back of the room. If Tag could it so could Nigel. The Prefect walked over the the front of the room where the practical part was taking place.

Nigel looked at the spot he was soon to be very familiar with with and pictured it clearly in his mind. He was going to be in that spot in a matter of seconds. Nigel was sure of it. The Three D's.

Determination. Deliberation and Destination.

Nigel focused and clearly saw in his head the place he wanted to be at. He closed his eyes and felt that familiar pulling in his gut. By the time he opened his eyes he was in the back of the room right where he pictured himself.

That was what Nigel called a successful apparition.

After much deliberation, Sander decided to select the large puddles. Yes they were the widest to apparate over, but he had concluded that there would be times in the future that he would need to apparate further distances than just 20 or 30 feet away from his current position. Yes again, he could always practice doing that once he had his license. Sander knew that if he wanted to get his license, it would be wisest just to play it safe and attempt the easiest of three. But Sander didn't believe in taking the easy way out.

So now that he had made his decision, Sander walked around the large puddles examining them before walking to the edge of the puddle nearest to him. He focussed his attention on the place where the puddles ended and where the ground stood firm and dry. He took a couple of deep breaths, before clearing his mind of all thought except just one; the need for him to apparate from where he was standing, over across the puddles, and landing at the other side of them, 50 feet away.

He took another couple of deep breaths, slowly releasing them to calm his nerves. ''We're almost there, Sander. We just need to get over this obstacle and when we're successfully done with that, its just the hoops to finish off,' he told himself. Eyeing the spot he had picked out, Sander concentrated on moving himself from where he was standing, crossing over the large puddles, and then immediately appearing at the other side of them.

Keeping that image in his mind and concentrating really hard on what he wanted to do, how he was going to do it and where he wanted to be, Sander moved his left foot back and quickly turned on the spot. He felt the now familiar twisting and moving into nothingness...

....and then........POP!!......

Those feelings disappeared and Sander quickly opened his eyes, glad to find himself standing on solid ground. He turned to look behind him and breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that he had successfully apparated himself over the large puddles. Quickly examining himself from head to toe, Sander was glad to see that he was unhurt and whole. He had successfully completed the second to last task without splinching.

Now for the final challenge.

Easy does it. Tag had completed the first task. He squinted his eyes at the board to see what he had to do next. Apparate into one of the hoops. This shouldn't be difficult to do, seeing as this was the only thing Tag had put all his energy into during the lesson.

He took a step to the side and positioned himself straight looking at the hoop a couple of feet in front of him. All right, he got this.

The three D's popped into Tag's head. Punny. First thing he did was think about each one individually and then stared at the spot the hoop was positioned in. What happened next was he did the whole 'imagine his body transporting and landing' in the space of the hoop. Envisioned his own body standing there. Once he thought he had a good feeling for that he shut his eyes and tried to see the spot of the hoop inside his mind. This is something he always did. Just 'see' himself there. If he didn't do that then he'd probably land on the floor or something.

Taking a deep breath the boy shut his eyes even more tight, made tight fists with his hands and put all his concentration and effort into landing at his destination.

There came that odd sensation. Like being pulled out through a tight tube or something or the sort, his breath running short, but as soon as he felt it it was gone. His feet touch floor, landing flat this time.

1. 2. 3.... He opened his eyes and looked around him. There he stood inside the hoop. Not facing the front of the hall, but the back. Still though, in it. Would that, how he was standing, be marked down or something? He hoped not.
