Cale MIGHT have over planned just a bit for his first apparition lesson at the school. When it came to apparition, anything could happen and he wanted to be prepared for it all. He had brought a number of cushions and rings to help the kids practice (and also in case someone fell, you could never be too careful!) as well as a portable swamp for...well, for later. For right now though, just take a seat on one of the pillows. There's plenty of everyone!
He had a nice whiteboard set up behind him so they could go over the practical stuff, and now he was just waiting on the kids and waiting on Missa, his apparition instructor. Once they were all there, they could proceed. He checked his watch anxiously. Any minute now...
OOC: Hello kiddos! Feel free to take a seat and chill for a while. The lesson will begin in approximately 24 hours. You should NOT be allowed to RP in this lesson unless your character WILL BE OF AGE/IS ALREADY OF AGE during the current school term (this includes summer birthdays BEFORE September 1st, the cut off date for each year). Anyone RPing who is not the correct age WILL be kicked out and points docked. Basically, if you aren't a sixth year, you shouldn't be here!
The swamp is set up towards the back of the room, so feel free to have them wonder and ponder over why it's there, but don't touch it! Cale is here, he is watching AND he's a former prefect so don't try anything funny!

Mo grinned with excitement at West as he took the seat next to him, giving the Slytherin a 'thisishappeningthisishappening' elbow to the ribs for good measure. And then the man from the Ministry began to speak... so. This WAS happening.
The how questions were always more difficult, and Mo puzzled over it as his classmates gave answers. Good answers, although kind of the expected ones. Mo finally raised his hand, hoping to offer his own thoughts, however disjointed. "We are innately magical. That is to say that we all can and probably have performed magic without wands and spells and incantations in our lives. The wand is a catalyst, but the magic is our own. I suppose that some people who are very good at reining in that magic can also Apparate without a wand, although I think most people need one in hand to do the spell."
Sophie was VERY excited about all this. Because, you know... Apparition had loads to do with noverbals and all that jazz, and she liked the topic quite a lot.
But Mr Newell's question got her thinking... How does it work? "Um, people say the feeling when you apparate is quite... strange." The Hufflepuff started, still thinking. It was like you were being pushed through a very tight tube, wasn't it? "I suppose what happens when you apparate is like... maybe your molecules get pushed together or something? Because you can't really de-materialise and then materialise back again, can you?" Blimey! "Or maybe you can..."
????????????
All of a sudden Sophie was extremely curious about the subject. She had never really given it that much thought and never considered how close it was to the topics she loved studying about. She knew about intention, concentration and all of that stuff. It was a sort of spell anyway, wasn't it? But... what HAPPENED, exactly?? Merlin, it sounded quite mental, if you thought about it...

Hmmm. So Tag couldn't get too hurt. But knowing it be Tag, chances were there were going to be some accidents. But one did never know.
Anyway, two weeks. Tag raised his eyebrows at that. Literally two weeks to get all of this down? And if he couldn't do it now, like Mr. Newell said, Tag could simply make his way to the Ministry with Saxon over the summer.
But, onto important matters. First question of the day. Tag thought there would be some fancy textbook answer to this question but it didn't seem so. He listened to all his classmates, whom seemed to be giving out similar ideas. "My classmates are mostly all smart, sir, I'll go with all of what they said."
How about that for an answer? Also he didn't want to sound repatative to his classmates and to bore Mr. Newell. How thoughtful of the Gryffindor.

... Caleb? Caleb Newell? Brother of... Sophie Newell. Sophie Newell was the girl who started that rumour and possibly had a crush on Cutty Mordaunt. ... That was a little confusing. He did remember Cutty mentioning a Caleb and the fight he had gotten into.
... Not the right time to think about that. Mainly because... BLINK. Two weeks? TWO?! They'll be able to take the exam in that time?! The lesson had just gotten a whole lot scarier. He couldn't even able to crack open an egg properly without smashing it, how was he meant to be able to take an apparition test in TWO WEEKS?!
Deep breaths... deep breaths... Just answer the question, yeah? How did it work? Really? He didn't know. Alec hadn't given it much thought and didn't know much apart from knowing that you disappear from one place and appear somewhere else. "Erm... sir?" Mr Newell? They didn't have to call him Professor, did they? "I think... having a lot of intent would help you. Intent and focus." ... Was that answering the question? He hoped so.

"Confidence would probably help too, Sir." Just, y'know, tacking on to what Alec had said. "You need to know what you're doing, where you're going, and be certain you can manage it, yeah? Best way not to get splinched."
She squirmed a bit at that word, the S one.

"The same way one would be able to preform wandless magic noverbally, I'd assume. With increased intent, and concentration. And a lot of practice. Although this is much simpler since it's such a widely used form of transportation." And it took a hell of a powerful warlock or witch to be able to do wandless magic noverbally. "It also can be more dangerous if preformed wrong." But that was the exciting part, right? She rocked on her pillow a bit and glanced around.

Everyone in this room had a pretty good grasp on what apparition entailed - Cale was impressed. He had no doubt that these kids would all be set and ready to test by the time they returned! Of course, with his awesome teaching skills, they would have been ready anyways.
"Good, very good answers. You're all right that concentration and deliberation are all key aspects of getting apparition to work. It's not random and requires hard work," he pointed out. How weird would it be if they all suddenly just APPARATED out of thin air and couldn't control it? Nothing would ever get done!

So how does Apparition work? Penelope considered it for a moment before raising her hand. "Still works by magic, yeah? Even though there's no incantation or wand needed or anything. But it's not something a Muggle can do." Probably be useful for them too though if they could.

DING DING DING! That was what he had been looking for!
"Yes, very well done! You're all here - all your classmates are here, in this castle - because you've been born with magic. Apparition is another perk of being magical. While it isn't required to have a wand on your person, as it was pointed out, a number of people DO need that extra boost in order to apparate properly. However a number of adults who have been practicing it for years are able to do it without a wand in hand, which can come in quite handy at times," he explained. "Combine the magic with the sheer WILL to move through space and BAM! Apparition," he said with a grin. He turned around and jotted these notes down on the whiteboard with his wand.
"Now, I'm sure you've all heard about this next bit, and without these next three things you really can't be successful with Apparition at all. What are the three D's of apparition?" he asked. Yes, this was easy, wasn't it? He was sure these three concepts were very well known....

Uhhhhhhh... he really wanted to know stuff about Apparition, but actually, he was pretty clueless. The first question went completely over his head. He was looking at Dora. Or West. Or something. Probably. Dunno. The three D's of apparition...
Guess, guess, guess.
He raised his hand slowly, to clearly show off his uncertainty. Nothing worse than answering a question WRONG and being proud about it. "Dis... appear? Disappear." Yes, okay. That was one good enough guess.

Sander raised his hand and even though his answer was the same as the others, he wanted to at least let the Instructor know that he did know it,
"The three D's are Destination, Determination and Deliberation." Sander provided his answer.
"In order to apparate you need to know your destination, be determined that you will get there and be deliberate in the steps you will be taking to get to said destination."

So it was down to the magic they had within them? At this, Alec glanced down at his chest thoughtfully. That was interesting, actually. And would explain why a Muggle wouldn't be able to apparate no matter how much they tried.
... Notes. He made a small note of that on his piece of parchment. The man did say that they could be taking a test in two week's time.
The three D's of apparition? "It's... like what West and Sander said. Destination, Determination," ... Pause. "...and... and... De... liberation?" Alec was BIG on the Destination part today. Lots of determination was going to be needed on his part and he knew it. ... And probably some courage too. Maybe it was a good thing that he had two Gryffindors and an Ells sitting near him.

This was pretty exciting, he had to admit. He listened intently as the man spoke, the name Caleb Newell suddenly becoming familiar to him. The kid that had tripped over right in front of him? And got punched in the face but Terry hadn't actually witnessed the last bit. So they had something in common, parents that worked, or had worked in Terry's case, as department heads. That was cool.
Writing notes had suddenly become extra important to the Slytherin, not that he didn't usually write notes in lessons but this time he only had one opportunity to pass his theory and he wanted to find out as much as possible from the expert. And that was exactly what Terry had been doing when the first question was asked, organising his notes page to be as eligible and detailed as possible. He didn't feel like he needed to answer the first question anyway, all of his fellow year group had pretty much come up with the perfect summary.
But the next question was one he was familiar with and after having copied down what the Department Head had told them, he raised his hand to answer. "Destination, Determination and Deliberation." As West had just beaten him to saying. "Got to be determined to reach your destination, moving without haste but with deliberation." That was the quote, wasn't it? He'd seen it somewhere, in a book or an advertisement or something.

"What they said." BEAM! Y'know, minus what Theo said but he got a smile because he had tried and that counted for something. Hai, Theoman.
And how cute was her best friend? Ella glanced over at Sophie and gave her a finger wiggle in greeting because she hadn't seen her come in. She figured they'd be talking later about molecules or whatever because the brunette seemed fascinated and the blonde was usually around to hear about things Soph was fascinated by.
She was getting nervous now too, y'know. Because this was real and she'd been waiting for forever to learn and hadn't had a chance over the summer because Gran stuff and just...she was so ready to do this. So ready.

Tessa desperately wanted to apparate without her wand- but she knew that would come with time, and practice. For now, it was time to focus on the apparition itself.
Three Ds? She knew that. "The three D's- Destination, Determination, Deliberation," she recited. That was one thing her father had made sure she knew- he said it every time they apparated, so it was ingrained in her mind. After all, they apparated a lot.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Misa knew that she was technically a bit late but she wasn't making a big deal out of it. She calmly entered the room near the Great Hall and walked with swift steps towards the wall on the side and then passed the students from there to the front. She thought about apparating to the front, you know, scaring the kids that she was suddenly...there. But decided against it. No need for showing off, she was a professional. Plus, she wasn't sure if Cale had lifted the enchantments yet.
Her department head had already started the lesson and she gave him a quick nod as a sign that she was here. She didn't came up to the front to stand next to Cale though because she didn't want to interupt him while he was asking the questions but stayed near the wall, observing the young adults and wondered who of them was a gifted apparator like she had been. The three D's of apparition. Tag was almost sure he had seen or heard of these somewhere. Well, he was about to give it a shot. "Destination, Determination...and...." Yeah. He never could remember the last one. The second Mr. Newell answered them Tag knew he had to keep the three thoughts in mind. Or else there would most likely be no poofing and re-appearing of Tag. None at all and that would be a shame.
So, the blonde just looked at all his classmates and waited to hear what they would say. He wasn't going to guess the last answer, he would probably get it wrong and make a fool of himself.

She very much liked her seat, what with being between a Dora and an Alec and all. But when the guy started speaking, Alice directed all of her attention to him. Newell? Like those snake kids? Hm. The boy kinda looked like him. A little.
Opting not to answer the first question, she waited for the second. And then everyone had already stated what the three D's were, so Alice said nothing, even though she knew. But there was a question in her head. Hand up.
"So when you're side-along apparating," she started, "can you do it because you're using your own magic and the experience of the actual person doing the apparition? Or because you're piggybacking on their magic and skill?"

Note taking was getting done and Nigel turned up to listen to all the important things that were being said. Disappear did sound like it could be one of the three D's of apparition. But West's answer was correct and he did not feel the need to repeat him. Alice did have a really good question.
So...Yeah, stay quiet and listen to the answer sounded like a good plan at the moment.

Hey cool her first answer was right. Not that the others were wrong, but hers and some others were extra right. Awesome.
Penelope jotted a little bit about that down and then also scribbled down the three D's for the next question. Because there was no point to answer out loud now since most everyone had answered it. She was pretty sure she could remember these though, but it didn't hurt to write it just in case. Destination and determination seemed like easy ones to remember because they were obvious, but deliberation sounded like one that could be easily forgotten.

The pillow was really comfy. Why didn't sit on pillows during all lessons again? Probably to not get comfortable. She was going to enjoy it while it lasted. And oooh, Newell! Caleb's father. The sixth-year found herself looking for similarities in the man's face to his son. Though, she stopped herself and snapped back to focusing on what was being said.
She nodded at Mister Newells' words registering them. No point of repeating the answer that's been already said, she thought.
Cassia noticed a woman joining them and guessed her to be one of the ministry peeps? Probably. They'd know soon.

The others had already answered his question, so Sophie didn't see the point on repeating the same three D's. Theo's answer, however, made her laugh. She actually approved of what he had just said It was... clever, in a way. So he got a smile of approval. Yep. Nice one, Theo!!
Kay, what was next??? Sophie wasn't bouncing, but she was almost. Could they get to apparating now, though? She wanted to try it!!!

"So when you're side-along apparating," she started, "can you do it because you're using your own magic and the experience of the actual person doing the apparition? Or because you're piggybacking on their magic and skill?"
HMMM. That was a good question! Cale thought about it for a few moments before he answered her, because he'd never really thought about that either.
"Well, I don't think anyone has ever gotten a concrete answer to that question," he admitted, "But I'm going to venture a guess and say you're basically piggybacking off the person who initiates the apparition. This is why kids are able to side-along apparate despite their magic not being fully developed. That's why we have you wait until this age to get your license - your chances of success are much higher now that you've been in school and been training your magic all these years," he explained.
"Anyways, yes, you're all correct! The three D's of apparition are destination, deliberation, and determination. Obviously, you have to have a clear vision of your destination in mind. Secondly, if you're determined and concentrated on getting to that location, you'll be more likely to get there successfully and without injury. Finally, you have to deliberately focus your energy on picturing yourself IN that destination. That is what gets the magic in your body to actually SEND you there," he explained. There. The three steps to being successful in apparition!
Alright, onto the next and final question before he let them have at it. "So, finally, the biggest risk in apparating...other than ending up somewhere you didn't mean to go...is splinching. What IS splinching and how can you prevent it?" he asked. He turned and added the three D's of apparition to the board as he waited for their answers.

Hulk did ask a good question and Ella tilted her head, eyeing the instructor curiously. She was eager to hear his take on that too. When he offered up that it was more of a piggybacking situation, she nodded her head. That made sense. She'd apparated alongside Sir Treyen before without a problem. Mhm.
Notes were then added to her parchment. Mostly highlighting the three Ds of Apparition and what they meant in more detail. She'd had a general idea before but it couldn't hurt to get down what this guy thought, him being the expert and all. She figured his take on things were likely to come up on the written test which she'd be passing on the first try, okay? Ella was determined.
Splinching talk?
Okay.
"Splinching is when you don't disapparate correctly. Like, you actually leave a part of you behind in the process of going from one place to another." Which was frightening, to say the least.

The Slytherin listened to the answers and jotted down the most important parts on his parchment, highlighting those that he felt were really necessary for passing the exam.
Splinching was the one thing Terry did have concerns about when it came to apparition. It sounded painful and he hoped that he would be able to concentrate enough to avoid this happening to him. He'd be a master apparator. Yep.
He raised his hand to answer the question. "It is when you apparate or disapparate unsuccesfully and leave an aspect of yourself behind in the location you have just come from. So it could be anything from an item of clothing to a part of your body" he spoke. And of course it could also be serious in terms of threatening your life.
Messer listened as the man explaining more about the Three D's of apparition. And then he asked them another question. Splinching? Oh. He had heard about this. Hand up. "I think it happen when a witch or wizard Apparates or Disapparates unsuccessfully and leaving their random body parts or clothes in their former location." That's pretty scary actually. How can they prevent it? "We can prevent it by concentrate upon our destination." He offered.

Lily had been quietly taking notes up until this point, without giving any responses to questions, since...ya know... she didn't know what to do during apparition. It hadn't exactly been very clear in any of the books she had read yet, so she just took notes, especially since there was supposed to be a test in two weeks. Scary...that's what that was.
Anyway, Lily watched the ministry dude carefully, listening to what he was saying. Which brought up the next question, and one that Lily knew how to answer. Splinching was her biggest fear with the whole apparition thing. It was even more scary than not being able to apparate at all.
