Ancient Runes Lesson 3: Saving The Whomping Willow
It was the second week of March, the weather was not so cold anymore and the sun was out today for a nice early morning outside Ancient Runes class.
Professor Botros had set up today's class out on the Grounds, by the whomping willow, literally by it. There were fourwallssurroundingthe tree, so it looked like the ancient Whomping Willow was inside an open box. The paralyzed branches were visible from above, towering over the walls. The professor had a small board next to him, his wand in his hand, and his blonde curls shining under the sun. He was ready for today's class, he wasn't smiling though, this aging disease had put a damper on his overall good nature, but he looked nice and kind all the same.
ooc: class will start in 20 hrs, you can post your characters arriving for now. CLASS HAS STARTED!
- remember to check the rules & guidelines of this class before attending.
- All SS rules apply here as well.

Ian remembered some things from the last lesson and he was quite excited. He had enjoyed making his amulet and the thing he remembered about curse-breaking seemed simple. He raised his hand slowly and answered, Professor, to break the curses, you look for the weak point in the runes. The middle. He liked the middle. He considered himself average, which was the middle. He didn't however connect that the middle was the weak point and so technically, he'd be a weak point.

Girlfriend got big grins from the Head Boy when she joined him. Mainly because of where they happened to be. Memories, you know? He also raised his eyebrows when she was joined by... people. People he only knew from face and name. Popular Head Girl was popular.
So... he turned his attention over to Botros instead. Botros and his blonde hair. Was it acceptable to ask a Professor about hair or...? ... Probably not. He was just going to concentrate on something else instead then. Like... the fact that they would be breaking the Whomping Willow free from the curses on the wall. And the fact that the wall zapped at you. BLINK. ... Right.
A quick revision over curse breaking? What could he add that was... different? The boy stood there, scanning over the wall for some sort of sign... or a hint. Anything that could help him answe-- ... OH! Homework! "Professor?" he started, raising his hand in the air, "Erm... sometimes the weakest spot is the odd one out. I mean... there was a part of the homework where there was a pattern or a stretch of the same rune except for one and the weakest spot ended up being that one. The odd one out. The one that... doesn't fit the pattern." ... That... made sense, right?
He also had a question. Naturally. "Erm... professor? You can't touch the wall at all? Not even... with a stick?"

Giving Professor Botros a smile, she had to admit that she was doing well besides her fear of messing this class up. Maybe Ancient Runes was a class she was destined to be bad at? Nah, she didn't really buy into all that Divination stuff though she held some sort of fascination for the subject.
Looking over at the walls surrounding the Whomping Willow, Lux noticed for the first time that there were markings on them. Of course, why had she not considered this before? Though, Botros was playing a bit of the daredevil role today; even if they had a few hours, that tree could seriously hurt them if time ran out. She hoped to be well out of the way when that happened.
Raising her hand at the first question, she tried to remember something that she had learned in the last lesson. It had been a hard one for her, so there was not a huge amount that she had grasped. "I remember that in order to break a curse, you need to find the weak spot in the Runes." That was the main part she remembered. There was also something about Runic Wards, but she wasn't as sure about them.

Caleb honestly couldn't remember much from last lesson, because he'd slept through most of it. Not that he could help it - it was this AGING thing. He was always tired! So he just decided to go off of what everyone else said. Yeah, that was a good idea!
"You have to find the weak spot," he said. Yup. That was it. That was the extent of Caleb's knowledge.

Answer a question? Not today nooooope. Today she wasn't even in the mood for sitting in a class, which was why Professor Botros was lucky he planned this one outdoors. Abbi planned to stay close -or as close as she could get to the walls- to make herself seem interested, but really she was far from, if anything she found the wall designs absolutely hilarious.
The first wall had to be the best with the half naked people working about. Even the cows, it looked like it was smelling the guys bottom. Had he gassed or something?
Mr. Unicorn: Kim's daughter: Jenn's sister : MILKSHAKES: Lita Daley: The Sun: Its so Fluffy!
What did they know about curse breaking? Tag had had trouble in the last lesson so his mind had kind of gone fuzzy. So when Botros asked that this very second Tag simply looked at him some more and stayed quiet.
But he was paying attention to his classmates, no walking up to the willow though. That was more of Lex's job. Anyway, his classmates all seemed to agree that they would need to find a weak spot when it came to curse breaking.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Adi had found curse breaking quite complicated for his brain and was not really looking forward to getting the Willow free from the walls. However, he did have an answer to contribute so he raised his hand.
"We learnt that the weak spots are mainly in the center but there are exceptions such as when there are two runes- one repeating but the other one is not. The one not repeating is the weak spot.'' Adi believed he was correct with that question.

Bay hobbled closer to the walls to take a look… but he hoped he would hobble to close to it.. he didn't want to get zapped as the Professor showed them.. turning his head to answer the question Bay raised his hand "i know we need to find the weak spot of a curse and if theres a complicated curse then we need to break it down to simple ones?"
he hoped he was right.. he didn't want to be around this tree in two hours time when it decided to wake up and go crazy.
Ah, Botros was awesome. And......... he sounded... different? Tobias wasn't sure what it was. He'd not noticed the man's renewed youth, but if he HAD, the Hufflepuff might have put the two together. It was only really a passing thought, and not all that worrying, so Tobias... didn't worry.
But yes, sitting. FanTASTIC. Tobias smiled gratefully and started on the process of gradually lowering himself to the floor, in a way that he wouldn't like... lock up his knees or something.
It took a while, but he was down. Safe and sound. And the lesson was started.
Cursed walls, huh? Tobias would probably have gone over to get a better look, were he not already on the floor. Instead, he settled with peering over from his position right here.
As for the question... uh... Toby didn't know. He'd not found all this curse breaking stuff very easy at all, but he was always one for trying. The Hufflepuff's memory was horrid these days, too, so... really this was hit and miss. He raised his hand.
"I think some curses have more than one weak spot, like complex ones. Or it's more that you break it down gradually, but that sort of does mean there's more than one, right?"
Maybe? Heh.

He wanted to get them killed, didn't he? What if they didn't break the curse in time and the Whomping Willow barrel down on the with its massive branches? Sure, now that Botros could run (she assumed) he was all daredevil and stuff. HISSS. SIGH. She wanted to tease the Whomping Willow and tell the tale, but in this...state she was in, it was quite impossible she could out run it.
BUT...she trusted he wouldn't let anything bad happen to them.
As for the question, she raised her hand, wincing slightly. Hopefully it didn't get stuck the way it had when she put her jumper on this morning.
"There are three types of runic wards: simple, double and complex." She remembered that correctly, yeah?

There was nothing that was gonna make this class okay again. She would be stuck staring at the Professor and his incredibly blonde hair thus reminding her of her own failure of hair that was getting closer to white than grey. Was that EVEN meant to happen? She didn't know but she was beyond questioning things by now--
Neat the wall zapped people.
Alright, she was sold, this would be an epic lesson and the Gryffindor stepped closer to the wall trying get a look for herself. This wall was cursed? As in they'd have to uncurse it? What would happen if they didn't? The tree was bloody strong enough to withstand getting a few minor zaps. She imagined it would break the wall itself if it really wanted to, then it would whomp them...and it would hurt.
Something the Professor might not have thought through well enough but what was life without some risks, eh? Like now. While the Professor spoke Lex kept inching her finger toward the wall until ZAP!
Holy kneazle! Let's try that again!....It was safe to say she wasn't paying attention, yes? It was the Professor's fault. Zapping and Alexa came hand in hand and neither went well with formal education.

Kace was smiling and chuckled when the professor replied to his comment. Then he heard the professor move onto the activity. He went back in his mind and wondered what did he learn last lesson about curse breaking. He heard his fellow students answers and agreed with them. They said it all. He didn't think they needed to be repeated.
His attention went to the walls. He looked around and had a question about them, "Professor are these hieroglyphics?" he asked quietly pointing to some symbols on the walls.

See, this was why Sophie hated Runes so much. Everybody, even Caleb, seemed to know what was going on. Everybody except Sophie, that is. She was honestly hoping they'd try something new, since she didn't even understand what the last lesson was about. No such luck, though.
"Professor," she said, raising her hand. "What do you do if your weak spot is finding the weak spot?" She just wasn't good at this. Was she going to get whomped by the willow?! Couldn't they just let the thing die? Why'd they have to save it anyway?
Dani's Citrus Duck Spawn | Mama Giraffe | Lemon PATch | Pushed the Red Button
What? No cane? Alice's face fell, but she said nothing. Instead, she scooted closer to the wall, near enough to inspect it without getting up but not nearly as close as you needed to be for a zap. What had they learned before? Her old person brain was having quite a difficult time recalling anything, but she did her best to remember.
"A ward's most commonly found in the form of a spell. The reason that you have to have runic knowledge when breaking one is because they're strong and united lines of power, and the spaces between the runes are bridged together by magic. You can't break that kind of bond without locating a weak spot."
.... like everyone else had already said. Merlin, was aging making her REPEAT answers? Was this what wrinkly people did? Horrifying.

Sander walked over to join the other students who were examining the four walls around the Whomping Willow. Fascinating...yes very fascinating indeed. It looked like the Professor had managed to get his hands on some dead pharaoh's inner sanctuary walls and placed them here.
From where he was standing, he could see not only Egyptian hieroglyphics recognizing some of them, but more importantly, the symbols. He saw the symbol he had carved onto his amulet. The Ankh.
Yes! there was the eye of Horus and the Amenta. Sander couldn't wait to try breaking the curse. He hoped that it wasn't going to be as tough as their homework.
Hehehehe. It looked like Thoth was telling Ammit he was going to be back in a few and she was acknowledging it. A-dorable. Botros, the bronzed Adonis, meanwhile had asked them a question. Cutty sneered a bit for the repetition. Was that really all they learned? His hand went up as a bit of an after-thought. "The complexity of the ward will dictate how difficult it is to break."
And, four walls, eh? He wondered if that bore an significance in today's lesson.
Also, Lex had gotten herself shocked or something. She'd better not get herself killed. She was Cutty's best customer yet. If she died he was totally gonna kill her or so his ironic thoughts went.
So the walls were cursed? That was interesting. Ella watched curiously as Botros went to touch one, eyes widening slightly when his hand was zapped by a spell upon getting too close. Well then. This was an awesome challenge and more so because of what they'd be trying to help. The willow was special to her, did he know? So of course she was going to give this her all. Of course.
When Botros gave the okay, Ella very slowly made her way over to the walls, inspecting them carefully but being careful not to touch anything. She wasn't keen on being zapped and honestly, she wasn't sure her body could take it, even if it wasn't super strong or anything. And what did she know about curses? Ella tried to think back to the joint lesson and when she'd thought of something, her hand went up.
"Runic Wards are used for the more powerful curses, Professor." He'd said that last lesson, yeah? "And the ward part is a spell that is tied to an object, like the wall in this case, by at least three runes." But there could be more, yeah? And as for breaking the curses, well Ella would lead that explanation to someone else. She'd want to touch the wall to demonstrate and if she did that, it would only end badly for her.
"Excellent! Yes."

"Professor curses are spells placed on an object or place using numbers or runic wards to ward off intruders, to prevent others from finding out stuff and to harm or injure an unsuspecting victim. Curse breaking involves first finding what the curse is and next breaking it by finding it's weakest spots." Sander shared what he had remembered.
"Those are curses in general, yes. Correct."

"The second or so step is to determine the weak spot in the runic ward, that's correct. It's not always in the middle, though, it depends on the ward."

He also had a question. Naturally. "Erm... professor? You can't touch the wall at all? Not even... with a stick?"
[indent]"Exactly. The rules to curse-breaking is still flexible. Just when the Runologists find a pattern or manage to set the rules for it, someone discovers something exceptional somewhere and put us back in the analyzing process. The rules stay, though, especially in your case as beginners. But keep your eyes and mind open for other possibilities. Like Mr. Summers mentioned, the weak spot is naturally the alien spot, the one that breaks a certain pattern or series of identical runes. Get rid of the alien one and then start working on the well-bonded other runes." He offered the Head Boy a smile before shrugging at his question. "Why don't you try?"
ooc: if Alec pokes the wall with a stick and keeps it on the wall for a moment, the curses will flash as an extra layer of ray around the walls.

Botros rubbed his hairless chin (HE SHAVED) and pondered at what the boy meant with repeating. "You mean that if we had a double or a complex ward then we break them down to simple wards so that we can determine the center rune and break it. Simple wards can be a series of matching, or repeated, runes as you mentioned so we start with the different rune and then go from there." This was a better explanation.

Even the simple ones, because when you break the first weak spot, your ward becomes two smaller wards with two new weak spots. And you keep breaking them down until you're left with nothing but scattered uni or duo runes." Just like Marco did with his homework. Did they all check it out? It was important.

Also precise answer! Botros nodded vigorously, "Yes, very good."
"So, in order to break the curses first we have to determine the weak spots in the line of runes. Following the rules we were taught in the previous lesson. But before that, we need to reveal the curse and the runes." See, they forgot this little but important part. "So, this class we will break the curses then using magic we will destroy those walls for the Whomping Willow to spread out its branches and live." He cleared his throat.
"After we find the weak spot, we need to choose an opposite rune and carve it over that spot. For example, if our weak spot is Kenaz, which is fire, then I'd choose Isa, represents ice, and carve it using the Intaglio spell over Kenaz. We do that to all the weak spots. If we chose strong enough runes to defy those weak spots then the curse will burn, you'll smell the burning actually and then we can do whatever those curses are preventing us from doing.
If the carving is not successful, the curse will swallow the newly carved rune. You'll have to either carve with more focus, or choose another stronger rune."

- Botros divided the class to groups, the point credits will be awarded to the creative and the best team-spirited characters. It is not a competition, though.
- The activity will NOT start until Botros says so, for now just gather around as groups and ask the professor whatever questions your characters have. We'll continue in 12-18 hrs.

Ian heard the professor's response to his answer and was ok with it. This certainly wasn't his strongest subject. It was pretty advanced and then he studied the walls a bit more than he had when he first approached. This was not some simple matter of just looking at characters. This was going to take some work. He wanted to go up and touch the wall, but he thought perhaps that would seem out of place and not yet appropriate. He was drawn to the patterns and images before him. He inched closer to the wall, drawn by some inexorable force.
He heard the professor tell the first through third students to join him and he snapped out of his condition to shuffle over to the professor. What a chance to actually do practical things. This seemed to be more fun than reading about runes. Bart might have a point.

O_o they were going to work in groups, with the Seventh years tackling the fourth wall. Sander walked over to the wall assigned to them and looked around.
He had recognized some 7th year students in class earlier, so he raised his hand.
"Hi I'm a 7th year," Sander called out to any 7th year within hearing distance. Then he waited hoping the rest would join him soon.

So they were going to follow the rules today? Awesome. And they were going to carve the runes too. More awesome. What was not so awesome was the idea of choosing the right rune. The eighteen year old had a funny feeling that something would go wrong. Or... that he'd end up selecting the wrong rune.
Shaking these thoughts away, he headed over towards the... fourth wall, was it? Seventh years. Fourth wall. Yeah, he was there. He had even grabbed a stick to try and touch the wall with later. Curiosity, you know. He wanted to know what it would do. Alec gave Sander a smile and a "Hey!" in greeting. There were others coming, right? Like Ells and... ... were there other seventh years in the class? He hoped so. Because then he'd be able to concentrate more and not be distracted by a certain blonde.
Grey-blue eyes landed on the wall again and he leant in for a closer look. Botros did mention something about revealing the curse and the runes, right? And it was only as he was inspecting the wall now that he realised... that no runes could be seen on there. None that he recognised, anyways.
So... "Everyone think they're ready to tackle a wall?" See? Not awkward. ... Right?

UGH he had to go with the FIRST YEARS? Caleb would never get anything done. Nevermind the fact that HE himself didn't really know what they were doing - but he at least had an excuse. Botros was stealing his youth.
Speaking of, he had to go with the professor too? This was just getting worse and worse. Looking particularly sour, Caleb headed over to the wall with the youngins and crossed his arms. Could they get started so he could focus on showing all these kids how it was REALLY done in Ancient Runes?!

Sander breathed a sigh of relief when Alec came over to join him at the fourth wall. He smiled and nodded at the Head Boy, "Hey there. I guess I'm ready as I'll ever be," he replied to Alec's question.
...and that didn't mean that he'd know what he was doing. Merlin forbid he'd be lucky if he didn't destroy the wall in the process.
But yes he was ready. It would be a nice challenge. Yes indeed.
Sweet, they got to work with the Whomping Willow! So Caelen MIGHT be a little fun happy right now. But eeeevvveeeryone in Hogwarts was ooold. There was like no fun around here. And the old people were STILL really creepy. This year at Hogwarts was the opposite of fun. And that was the opposite of everything Caelen liked. Sigh.
Wait. Breaking charms? Maybe the Professor had the charm to get the aging spell off of the students. Hmmm, he WAS getting younger. And everyone -and she meant everyone- was getting older. The little Ravenclaw was keeping an eye out for anyone that may or may not hold the key for solving this thing. Because she -and probably a large population of the actual old people student body- didn't want to believe it was permanent. At least it seemed to stop attacking people, whatever it was. The little redhead was thinking about walking around with a surgical mask.
The blue eyed girl walked over to her assigned wall and waited, bouncing up and down on her toes. Exciting! Trees that attacked you? Double exciting! Okay, she reeeeallly needed to get out and about Hogwarts again.
Re-positioning her hair into a high ponytail that showed off her heart shaped face, she looked at all of the other students. And at the same time, tried to keep an eye on the Professor. Because he was being very fishy as of late. And she was having none of it.

Cutty got up and drew closer to the agricultural scene unafraid to shove his way to the front if he had to. On his way up he noticed a very displeased looking Caleb Newell and he elbowed him slightly with a smirk. Oh, he had no idea what Caleb was looking so unsatisfied about, but it was just fun to tease him. Cutty couldn't have been happier to work with the younger years, it was the bronzed Adonis version of Botros that got in the way of him completely taking over and using them as guinea pigs that he found a minor set-back.
He brought with him a small note pad and a muggle mechanical pencil for note taking. His wand was already in his hand he wanted to cast SpeRevelio, but with Botros present, the elder wizard probably had something specific in mind for them. Though if he wanted a demonstration, Cutty was so dtd.

This sounded HARD. Lux only had a slight grasp of what they were supposed to do, and it was a relief to see that they would be doing this as teams and she would be joining with the Professor. At least she would not be doing this alone, but tackling the wall with other Years as well. Feeling a little better, she made her way over to where Professor Botros was.
