Botros shrugged at the Hufflepuff (Ian), "I have no idea what the Whomping Willow would do if we don't solve this coon." He gave him a fake frightened look. Maybe this would be encouraging to work with the others and solve this quicker? The boy's comment about the curse didn't go unnoticed by the professor, the man nodded at him and gave him thumbs-up. |
Post 5 - Seventh Years Oh hey...here's another 7th year joining their group. The more, the merrier Sander thought to himself as he smiled in greeting. Then he listened intently as Alec shared his thoughts of what Ingwaz meant and its possible opposite rune, Nauthiz. Sander nodded as he digested what Alec had said. Yes he made sense. Nauthiz did seem like the opposite rune. So running on the same premise as what Alec did, Sander first wracked his brain trying to remember what the rune Jera meant and then once he figured out what it was, he wracked his memory cells again, reviewing each rune in the Elder Futhark, trying to find a rune who's meaning was the opposite of Jera. Fehu?...nope...Gebo?...nope...Isa...no...wait... Could Isa be the opposite rune of Jera? Sander decided to share his thoughts with his group. "I was thinking Jera represents change, cycle development, inevitable development and Isa represents inactivity, blockage, stagnation. I believe Isa could be the opposite of Jera. What do you think everyone? Do we now have the opposite runes for Ingwaz and Jera?" If they did, maybe now they could decide which of the two middle runes would be the easier weak spot they would try to break first. |
Post 4 (First to third years) Aha. So the Raidho's were not their problem. Okay, that made it simpler, right? Adi listened as the Professor explained about the symmetry of the runes, too. Eh. This was kind of complicated but the Puffer was sure he understood what was going on. Right. So one of them was going to carve while the rest chanted? "I'll help with the chanting,'' Adi volunteered. Because he didn't trust his eyes at the moment. Suppose he screwed up the carving after taking so long to locate the five runes on the wall? |

First to Third Years - Post 6 So they seemed to be on the right track from what the Professor was telling them. The talk about symmetry was a little confusing, but Lux was pretty sure that she got the gist of what Botros was saying. A volunteer was needed to carve the Rune into the wall. Lux decided that she would offer to go. "I will carve the Rune unless someone else really wants to do it." She did not want to be mean if one of her team members really wanted to do the carving. It just was that she had good eyesight and thought it might be cool to try this carving thing out. |

He was much better at the whole carving runes thing. So Tag inched closer to the wall, found the middle Ansuz, the weak spot, and put his wand nearby it. "Intaglio. Right. Thanks." He said to Mo, before he started the incantation. "Intaglio Naudhiz, Intaglio Naudhiz, Intaglio Naudhiz, Intaglio Naudhiz." Was that good enough? Should he say it a few more times. Two more wouldn't hurt. "Intaglio Naudhiz, Intaglio Naudhiz." Now. To see if this would work. |
Post 3 - Seventh Years! Oh, and look, they had another person in their group. Oichi. Where'd she been all this time? And she agreed with Alec, as Ingwaz and Nauthiz could most definitely be opposites, but... Hmm. Isa? Alice had read somewhere that Othala was the opposite of Isa, with the latter being all isolation and cold while the former was the heaven on Earth and paradise. She wouldn't have placed Isa with Jera, but if Sander saw it as Jera representing progress and Isa representing stopping a process.... it went deeper and made more sense than her previous knowledge, so she just nodded. Maybe it'd work. The guy was smart. "So which do we want to try and break first?" |
5 (first to third years ^____^) Tobias couldn't help but smile around at his teammates, just because of the teamWORK, y'know? It made him happy and junk. He nodded at Sophie, because he'd actually sort of agreed with her inverted Raidho logic at first, but more because it broke a pattern in a way. Though there was way more to it than all of that, as Botros later explained. First, though, Toby's old dance partner had spoken up again, agreeing with his ideas. Tobias was tempted to try the spell, but he still didn't feel confident enough in his curse-breaking abilities that he could try it without getting the go-ahead from Botros. Luckily, that was when Botros spoke. Interesting stuff, too. Tobias hoped he'd remember it all when he was back in a better position to take notes. The part about the Raidho and inverted Raidho cancelling it out was particularly interesting, and definitely worth some more research later, if he had the time. Hagalaz then? Sweeeeeet, Toby beamed again, because it had been his second suggestion, after all. It always felt good to get something right in one of your favourite classes. Tobias wasn't really too bothered about who cast the spell, so when a fellow Hufflepuff (Lux, was it?) volunteered to do so, he nodded eagerly. "Go for it, sure! We can do the Galdr, like Professor Botros said." And so, the third year opened the textbook he'd been holding under his left arm, and flipped to the section on Galdrs, and then to Hagalaz. Galdrs were probably important to remember, but it was a lot to keep track of, and Toby was often forgetting things like this these days. Best bet was to use the textbook, as that would help him avoid any sort of error, right? Finally finding the right section, Tobias cleared his throat and glanced up to see if the girl was going to carve the rune, and started the Galdr chanting, assuming everyone else would join in. "Hagalaz hagalaz hagalaz... h h h h h h h h h... hu ha hi he ho..." How was the carving coming? Tobias wanted to glance up to look, but didn't dare look up lest he lose his place. 1st - 3rd years Sophie nodded along as Beverly explained that it was 'just a suggestion' on her part. "Right. Better than what I came up with," she replied with a grin. She turned toward the professor as he gave remarks on their ideas. Ohh, but first he'd scolded Cutty about teasing--her, actually. Sophie elbowed Cutty in the side. "Yeah, Cutty," she whispered, "quit teasing me." She grinned, though. Now, on to the Galdr chanting, which they were meant to do as soon as Toby began carving the rune. Sophie stood by and waited. When Toby started his part, Sophie began chanting. "hagalaz hagalaz hagalaz h h h h h h h h h hu ha hi he ho hug hag hig heg hog (hul hal hil hel hol) oh eh ih ah uh h h h h h h h h h," she chanted. |

He looked around at his fellow students, none of whom seemed to be stepping up to tackle the rune breaking. Ian was ready to be done with this particular lesson. All these 'old' bodies would be decimated by the tree if it came back to an animated state. Maybe that was Botros' plan... Ian thought to himself. He sure did look a good deal younger than the first day of class, that was for sure. Ian took out his wand, concentrated on the runes and decided on the center rune Algiz was the weakest. Ian spoke up to the team and said, Lets all give the Gladr a go. I'm not real kean on sticking around here any longer than we have to. I don't fancy having a tree treat me like a pinata. |

1st - 3rd years, post 5 or so...please break the rune...no flat Ians please Ian watched as Professor Botros, sidled up to the volunteer and provided some encouragement. Ian continued chanting, hoping they weren't disturbing the tree. He really, really wanted to get out of this class without death or serious injury. They were so close to the end of the term and he'd hate to have his mum get news that her precious little boy was crushed by the massive boughs of a tree awakened from it's slumbers. Ian thought maybe if he closed his eyes, it would help him focus. He continued intoning the chant, trying to help best as he could. he would occasionally chance a peek to see how things were going. |
post 1 - first-3rd years + Botros So far Fern had not been enjoying this class at all. Even the fact that they had the professor on their team could not make up for the presence of Kace, Toby, and worst of all, CUTHBERT. Fern wanted to be on the seventh year's team with Alec and other mature NICE people. Then Lux volunteered to carve the Hagalaz. For the first time in the entire lesson, the 12-year-old smiled. "You got this Lux!" she cheered, then leaned over to whisper to Professor Botros, "That's my dorm-mate." Yeah. Fern was rooming with an Ancient Runes genius. Ladle that in your potions vial and drink it, Cuthbert! ...Right. What were they doing again? Oh yeah! "hagalaz haglagaz hagalazlazga h h h h h h h h h hu ha hee hee hi. |
Post 5 (Botros's team!) So Lux volunteered. Great! It was time to get the chanting going. Adi quickly joined the group in doing just that. ''Hagalaz Hagalaz Hagalaz h h h h h h h h h hu ha hi he ho.....'' chanted Adi loudly and clearly. He kept his eyes on Lux, waiting for her to get started with the carving. They were making great progress so far, yes? Professor Botros must be pleased with them. |
First to Third Years - Post 7 Everyone seemed to be okay with her doing it, and were even encouraging. Beaming, she sent them all a thumbs up; though since they were so focused on chanting, she was sure they couldn't even see it. Oh well. Nodding at what Professor Botros was explaining to her, she was sure she understood her part. With a gentle push towards the wall the crouched down by it - while making sure not to get ZAPPED. Holding her wand right over the Algiz carving, she said, "Intaglio Hagalaz." Her voice was as clear and full of intent, and she kept repeating Hagalaz over and over again as she carved the Rune shape. After a little while, Lux was done carving the Rune. Standing back again, she waited to see what would happen. The students and the professor wait... and wait... and wait... nothing happens. |

6 (1st to 3rd) Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand... "... hug hag hig heg hog... (hul hal hil hel hol)... oh eh ih ah uh... h h h h h h h h h." When he'd finished chanting the Galdr, Tobias looked up from his textbook again to check the process of the rune carving, and to see if he'd need to start another round of the Galdr again. But no, no it seemed like his Housemate had managed Hagalaz perfectly fine. "Great carving!" Toby said encouragingly to the girl, with a smile on his face. Then he glanced at the wall again, already thinking ahead to if maybe they had to break Othala next. And if it would be obvious that this rune had worked, or complete guesswork. |
Ian observed that the rune carving was going well. He was still rather skeptical about what a freed whomping willow would do, and so as he was chanting, he began to slowly step back away from the tree. Maybe if he scooted back far enough, he would be able to outrun the branches. At the very least, his closer classmates would get whacked first. |
Post 3-Seventh Years Carry her? Ella gave Alec a thoughtful look, considering this. In the end she decided to pass, though. It wasn't fair to everyone else who had sore legs and besides, what if she hurt him? That wouldn't be good. "Thanks but I'll be okay." Keep calm and stand on. She could do this. As for the rune discussion going on, the eighteen year old was just happy to hear that her classmates had solid ideas. She was a bit lacking in that department lately. "Yeah, Ingwaz and Nauthiz makes sense to me." And the Head Boyfriend's explanation helped iron out any questions she might have had. As for Sander's idea, Ella thought on this for a minute or two. She had some different ideas, as did Oichi, but that didn't mean his weren't valid. "I actually wasn't thinking of Isa but you never know, yeah? It could work." And giving it a try wouldn't hurt, right? If it failed to cancel out the rune, they could just try something different. No harm done. "How about we start with Ingwaz and Nauthiz, see if that works? It was the first thing offered up so it makes sense." Nodnod. "Anyone want to do the honors?" Ella's hand wasn't as steady as it used to be. |
Post #4 - seventh years! No carrying? Shrug. "Okay. Anytime!" Smile. And his idea of using Nauthiz was something everyone agreed with? Really? The Head Boy reached up a hand and ruffled his hair, a small grin playing across his face. Because the boy had every reason to believe that his ideas might not be the best one so... this was nice, you know. Even... if there was every chance that he was wrong and that this wouldn't work out. Still. It was a good feel-- ... Isa? The expression on Alec's face was replaced with one of confusion as he looked over at the wall again. Hmmm. Inactivity and... change. Opposites. He understood that but he also understood Oichi's point. There was no harm in trying, right? Right. He smiled over at Sander for the suggestion before-- ... Oh. They were going to start with Ingwaz and Nauthiz? Erm... okay. Breathe. Breathing was good. Who to carve the runes? Seeing as he had offered up a rune... "Ladies first." Gentleman, he was. And he even shuffled back a little to make room. ... Pause. "Maybe someone can carve the rune and the rest of us can chant the galdr? To make the rune casting more... powerful?" You know, if it won't throw the person off. |
Post 5 1st-3rd years Okay so inverted was the term. Benny had to hold back from rolling his eyes at the other boy as he was corrected. What...like he was expected to be so perfect the first time out? He turned his attention back to the professor as the man further explained what they all had been talking about. So the inverted Raidho cancelled out the proper on. The Gryffindor managed to scribble that down in his notes for later. It certainly was something that might come in handy in the future. As for what was being talked about further, as in the carving of another room to act as a breaking point for the curse all Ben could do was watch and listen at first to try and get the concept. The girl was certainly free to volunteer and the second year wondered if like Adi he should try and chant. He didn't want to mess things up if he did anything too wrong. Finally he just gave in and managed an attempt, hesitantly echoing his friend. ''Hagalaz...Hagalaz...h...h...h...h...h...hu...ha. ..hi...he...ho.....'' |
1-3 team || Post #5 So they were chanting now, great. The faster they moved the sooner they'd get away from the Whomping Willow. Preferably while it was still sleeping. And Lux was going for it. Awesome. Beverly would have time to run/hobble away if the willow awoke. Joining the rest of her teammates, she fell in chant with them: "Hagalaz hagalaz hagalaz...h h h h h h h h h...hu ha hi he ho...hug hag hig heg hog...(hul hal hil hel hol)...oh eh ih ah uh...h h h h h h h h h." Boy, that was a lot of chanting for this little old-lady-child. Beverly burst into a fit of coughs. Eventually getting over it, she mumbled, "Am okay, am okay." Just in case anyone thought she was dying. |
Post 6 - Seventh Years Sander listened as everyone else in their group gave their input and nodded in agreement. So they were going to try Alec's suggestion first, which was fine with him. As long as they were attempting to try it was a lot better than not trying at all. Do or do not, there is no try. Oooops...wrong quotation here. Snigger... If at first you don't succeed, try and try again. Yes that was more like it. Sander thought to himself. As he moved aside to allow the girls better access to the runes on the wall. It made sense that one of the girls carve out the opposing rune while the rest chanted the galdr. Made sense? Yes, he had read somewhere that women were found to have steadier hands than men. Although he hated to admit it, Sander had to agree that right now in his present health condition, his hands were terribly shaky. So chanting he could do. "Yes I agree with Alec. I'll be happy to chant the galdr while one of you ladies carve," Sander nodded in agreement as he flipped through the pages of his textbook looking for the appropriate galdr for Nauthiz. Once he found it, he placed his finger marking the page and waited expectantly for someone to start carving. |
Post 4 - Seventh Years It seemed like everyone was in wholehearted agreement with Alec's statement about Nauthiz, just as she was. Were they ready to carve then? Maybe it was a better idea that the Head Boy carved the rune himself... after all, it was his idea. But he and Sander wanted one of the other three in their group to do the honors? Well, Alice certainly didn't mind, and if Ella and Oichi didn't want to, she could. .... what if it was the wrong rune, though? How did they go about fixing a carving? Did Finite work on that? Though surely they had the right answer, but it would be nice to know just in case and for posterity. Ask Botros later, then. "I can do it," she offered."Just cast Intaglio, then carve while you lot chant?" Seemed easy enough. |
