Ancient Runes Lesson 3: Saving The Whomping Willow

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...s/arclass3.jpg

It was the second week of March, the weather was not so cold anymore and the sun was out today for a nice early morning outside Ancient Runes class.

Professor Botros had set up today's class out on the Grounds, by the whomping willow, literally by it. There were four walls surrounding the tree, so it looked like the ancient Whomping Willow was inside an open box. The paralyzed branches were visible from above, towering over the walls. The professor had a small board next to him, his wand in his hand, and his blonde curls shining under the sun. He was ready for today's class, he wasn't smiling though, this aging disease had put a damper on his overall good nature, but he looked nice and kind all the same.

It was kind of difficult to determine which was further from the Hufflepuff common room; the Ancient Runes classroom or the Whomping Willow. Tobias figured that at least it wasn't like they'd had to go allllll the way to the classroom and then allllllll the way out here, so that was a plus. Still, his back and knees were not feeling so positive, and Tobias had to grit his teeth and bear their complaining until he finally rocked up to where Botros was waiting. Or at least... Tobias assumed it was Botros. Similar build and all that.

"Morning, Professor," Tobias rasped, a little wheezy from the journey. "Is it okay if we sit?"

Sure, he might not be able to get back up again, but that was a problem for a later date.

Oooooh, pretty walls. Ancient Egyptian stuff? Hadn't Botros mentioned something about Egypt way back when. At some point. Maybe. Ah, Toby couldn't remember at all.

FearlessLeader19 03-09-2014 03:53 PM

Adi huffed and puffed all the way out to the Grounds then headed towards the Whomping Willow. Ugh! Why must the Grounds be sooooo huge! Finally, he made it to where Professor Botros was. And the man was not smiling. Where did the usual smiling man go? Could they have him back, please? "Hello, Professor,'' he said.

Adi eyed the Willow and it's walls before turning to go stand next to Tobias, the only other student there so far. "Hi, Tobias.'' And yes. Could they sit? Please?

natekka 03-09-2014 04:37 PM

Bliss was ultra curious about today's lesson. It was outside and outside was nice. It also had Professor Botros and that was nice too. And it also had the Whomping Willow and that too was nice. All around niceness would surely be ahead of her, right? At least, that's what the Sixth Year thought.

With a spring in her step, she made down to the Whomping Willow.

Waiting by the Willow - which appeared to be in a box - were only a small handful of students and Professor Botros. She waved a greeting at her fellow pupils before turning to the Professor. "Good morning," she said enthusiastically and waited for some sort of sign or explanation as to what they were doing.

hermionesclone 03-09-2014 04:44 PM

Alec was glad that the class was out near the Whomping Willow and not up all those flights of stairs. His body seemed more okay with walking across ground than it was walking up... stairs. Maybe more lessons could be held out in the grounds. Especially if the weather was looking up for once.

Rubbing the bottom of his back gently, the boy started walking down towards a certain spot in the grounds. The Whomping Willow brought back some really nice memories. Ones that he was completely thankful he could still remember a bit of, even if it wasn't in detail. A confused expression spread across the seventh year's face as he neared the still tree and the... were those walls?! ... Erm...?

"Hello Professor!" he said, coming to a stop and shooting the man a smile, "Hey guys!" Smiles for Adster, Badger Boom and Bliss too. ... And... more confused looks for the walls. Squinting, he leaned forward a little to try and make out what the markings on them were.

And sitting down sounded like a great idea. His back agreed with that.

Expecto-Penguin 03-09-2014 05:02 PM

Kace was excited that the lesson was held near the whomping willow. He rather have a lesson outdoors on a nice day like this than be cooped up indoors. As he was making his way down the stairs to the lesson, he noticed the professor put up four walls. He looked up at them and gave them a quizzical look. He wondered what they needed those for today.

He noticed the professor was standing there, he smiled and waved, "Hey Professor! Nice place you picked out." he nodded and looked at the whomping willow. This tree kind of creeped him out but as long as he wasn't too near it, it was fine.

TakemetotheBurrow 03-09-2014 05:19 PM

The Whomping Willow.

It was something to smile about, even if it'd taken ages to get here. Memories, y'know? Even though they were foggy they still made her smile. And she needed all the help she could get these days. Though she looked her old self again thanks to potions and charms, she was feeling worse than ever. Old bones were achy and sore and she was alarmingly frail. She was so over being like this. She was done. That's why she needed a second to compose herself before saying hello to Botros. He was young. Looked great, even. And while she was happy that he got to feel better, she couldn't help but be jealous. She should be feeling like that too. She just needed to...get over it. Yeah.

"Hello Professor Botros!" Small tired smile for you.

And look, lots of badgers here. Ella smiled at everyone and gave a collective greeting. "Hey, you guys." She wanted to be by her boys, though. And so she made her way over to Alec and Tobias and gave each a proper grin. Hiii.

Anna Banana 03-09-2014 05:28 PM

Ancient Runes. Ew.

The Whomping Willow. Double ew.

Sophie was always in a bad mood when it came to the classes she didn't like, and add that to the fact they were out here by a deadly tree that might try and whomp them any second, and you had a very annoyed second year girl. At least the weather was nice, though. Sophie walked up and joined the ever-growing group, making a special effort to stop beside Adi.

Lissy Longbottom 03-09-2014 05:52 PM

Well well well. It was the magical de-aging Botros again! Caleb at first hadn't really questioned it, and thought maybe since he was already OLD the disease was just going the opposite direction with him, but now - now he was certain Botros was somehow sucking their youth from them. He didn't know how, and he didn't know how he'd go about PROVING it, but he knew the man had to be behind it! HE JUST HAD TO!

Not saying hello to him, Caleb went over and sat next to his sister, giving her a small smile.

Bay hobbled his way down to the whomping willow.. ughh his knee was still aching him.. seeing the professor he said hello "Hello Professor" oh none of his friends were here yet.. oh he was wrong he spotted Ella so he made his way over to her "Hey Ella… how are you doing?" having the huge urge to lean on her.. should he…. naww… plus she was with other people so he didn't want to take up all her time.

DaniDiNardo 03-09-2014 06:10 PM

Oh sweet Merlin.

Someone pass her her inhaler. Oh wow. This walk. This tree. The excitement and tiredness all at once. The Gryffindor didn't know if she was ready to topple over from the exhausting walk all the way over here or try putting a bounce in her step despite her achy knees. This was meant to be an interesting and destructive class. Hosting it by the whomping willow was meant to increase that so she SHOULD be happy but the half smile she was wearing vanished the moment she saw the Professor and his blonde hair.

His class was by far the most depressing to come to for this reason. The change in her expression wasn't something she tried to hide either as she walked up to the others.

"Hello Professor." She mumbled, eyes locked on his hair for only a second before she turned her attention elsewhere. Anywhere would have been better than at him. Seriously. Making her go to Ancient Runes while he was teaching it was torture.

Emzily 03-09-2014 06:11 PM

Theo draaaaagged himself to Ancient Runes, which was extra effort because it was OUTSIDE. He didn't mind outdoor classes so much if it was the summer, but March? Not so much. He didn't pay much attention to the Whomping Willow once he had arrived, because for a start - he didn't care. But mostly because he was watching all of the other students in the class nervously.

Why? 'Cause he had a spot on his forehead that he was feeling extremely self-conscious about. He had fixed his hair to cover it to an extent, but anyone who looked right in his face would totally notice. He was sooooo convinced.

So yeah, not socializing today. Not even with the professor.

Bay looked hurt, did he know?

Ella frowned a bit as he hobbled over, wondering if Botros would mind if she summoned an ice pack or something. Maybe the Runes professor had his can around somewhere? Maybe. Anyway, Ella managed a smile when the Gryffindor wandered over and tried not to stare at his leg. Worrying was in her nature but she didn't want to be annoying. "Hey Bay! Good, you?" And she made some room so he could hang with them if he wanted. She wouldn't be talking too much, though. Didn't want to be rude or anything.

And was Theo okay? Ella glanced over and smiled but didn't raise her eyebrows like she wanted to. He didn't seem like he was in the mood for questioning looks. See? She was a good friend.

Team ronmione 03-09-2014 07:16 PM

So Tag was here. For Ancient Runes. Yayy.

At least it wasn't cold out here. Probably because there was double the sun than usual this march. Anyway, Tag had found his way to where class was supposed to be and eyed the tree curiously. Why was the tree covered by those weird walls? Couldn't they see nature at its finest? Anyway, it seemed to be a part of the class so Tag didn't question it too much.

However he did see Professor Botros, and the blonde simply gave his professor a short and small nod before finding a place and standing there, waiting for class to start.

FireboltAvis88 03-09-2014 08:40 PM

Sander made his way down the path to the Whomping Willow. It was a nice day and Sander enjoyed his walk down even though he was beginning to feel tired. When he reached where the other students were waiting, Sander looked around for the Ancient Runes Professor.

Ahhh...there he was. Sander walked up to him and smiled in greeting,"Good morning Professor. It's a great day to be outdoors," Sander said to him before turning around and greeting his fellow students. "Hi everyone," before walking over to sit next to Bay.

"Hey there Bay." Sander smiled at his younger friend.

WhittyBitty 03-09-2014 09:10 PM

As Lux made her way over to where the lesson was to take place, she was not sure how this would go over. Ancient Runes was turning out to not be one of her strongest classes, though Professor Botros was rather nice. Speaking of the Professor, she gave him a friendly wave. "Hello, Professor. How are you today?"

Spotting Bay, Sander, and Ella, she headed over to join their little group. "Hey, guys! How are you all doing?" A little talking would be okay, she was sure though she did not want to get in trouble. Seeing how Bay seemed to be having trouble with his leg still, she frowned slightly. Poor Bay. This walking stuff really was not going well for him now.

lemon 03-09-2014 09:23 PM

She would have thought that Botros of all people would understand the disadvantages of being old, but apparently not. It was okay to make the STUDENTS walk down to the grounds, huh? Huh? Alice thought it quite absurd, but went along with it anyway because it was class and required.

"Hi, sir. You still haven't given me your cane, y'know? I could reaaally use it." She plopped down on the grass near the young!old professor without asking if she was allowed to sit, wincing in pain as her knee popped loudly. Ouch. Maybe this class should have been skipped after all... but if Mister Ab taught something interesting, Alice would never forgive herself for missing it.

But it seemed interesting enough, considering the Willow.. had walls around it. Weird.

Casey O 03-09-2014 09:24 PM

This class should be interesting. Skipping to where the Prodesso was, she greeted him. "Hi Professor. Hope you're well." She was being ULTRA formal today. She looked curiously at the Whomping Willow.

This class should be super interesting.

Holmesian Feline 03-09-2014 09:27 PM

While the weather was getting nicer and Ben usually enjoyed the out of doors, it was the trek across the grounds that he wasn't too pleased with. Long and hilly along the pathway to the clearing that housed the Whomping Willow. It was a good thing the Gryffindor had given himself enough time to make his way there in a slow but decent enough pace before class was scheduled to begin. And when he finally reached the area and spotted the professor and classmates around the fenced-in tree, it really did look like the area HOUSED the tree.

"Hello Professor," he greeted politely, still getting used to seeing the elder man the way he was. Not just the non-smiling form but the young and youthful one. In contrast, Benny was back to his aged self as he hadn't bothered to renue the cream and charm treatments they had been taught, given and allowed to use from various lessons.

"Morning," he added in further greeting to Adi and maybe others in earshot as he came up beside his best friend. Good was still always up to determination. So far semi-good. Other than the long walk of course.

FearlessLeader19 03-09-2014 09:37 PM

And more people were turning up. First to turn up was a Puffer girl Adi wasn't much familiar with (Bliss) but he grinned back at her. Alec came next followed by Ella. "Hi, Super Alec!"Hi, Ella!'''' Adi was always pleased to see the seventh year boy. He was so cool, ya know?

Sophie was the first Snake to join them. She seemed to be in a bad mood but even without a smile on her face, Adi thought she was the prettiest girl ever. He smiled at her. "Hi.'' And finally, his best friend showed up. "Hi. Did you get lost?'' Adi asked jokingly. But he knew it was old age that had taken Benny so long to get there. Yep.

Okay. Adi would shut up now. Just wait for the lesson to begin.

SweetPeea 03-09-2014 09:41 PM

Um....Alright...big scary tree....

Random walls around it.....

Josette stared up at the ginormous tree before her as inched her way closer. Why was Ancient Runes outside by this big scary looking tree? Was it even safe? Why would Professor Botros pick this place? She couldn't help but feel like this were the beginning to some sort of a creepy story in a book just before the scary monster inside hopped out to snatch you!

Nonetheless, the first year walked up to the odd scenario and took notice of a blonde Professor Botros standing there with a small board beside him. Josette gave a polite wave followed by a soft, "Good morning Professor.." Walking passed him after doing so, she made her way by her fellow classmates waiting for her favorite class to begin.

pundantic 03-10-2014 01:55 AM

Ascanius-unsurprisingly- was not keen on having to walk all of the way down and outside to get to Botros' lame class. It was bad enough that Ascanius had to suffer through Ancient Runes within the confines of the castle; why did Botros have to ruin the outdoors too? Especially on such a lovely day, which it truly was, yeah?

So he didn't even bother saying hello or doing anything remotely appreciative in gesture to the old man. Ish. Old man ish. The castle was getting really weird lately.

Instead, he just joined the rest of his peers and looked thoroughly bored. Not that he needed to pretend.

Botros smiled at the first boy to appear. Yet saddened by the way they all looked frail and grey. "Morning, Tempus." Who would've thought that Tempus could stop jumping around like a yo-yo? It was sad. "Make yourself comfortable, yes." Maybe Botros should've brought them all seats? Oops.

Aw, the Head Boy was also a slow-walker. Merlin's Beard, Botros wished the Healers would speed up whatever they were doing and just come on and help. "Hello, Summers." At least the walls still caught the boy's old eyes.

"Hello, dear." The professor smiled at the tired old boy, and was content when he seemed able to breathe and bend and not drop dead.

Maybe choosing this location at this time of the year was not as good as he'd originally thought it would be?

Maybe this class should have been skipped after all... but if Mister Ab taught something interesting, Alice would never forgive herself for missing it.

But it seemed interesting enough, considering the Willow.. had walls around it. Weird.

Ohohohono. "No, dear, I won't give you my cane. You'll feel better instead. Soon." Obviously. Botros was not going to accept that they'd just aged like this, even if the Healers gave up or whatever, he would personally go and look into it. Though something told him that the Headmistress was the one so eager to get her beauty youth back. So. They all should just rest assured.

This class should be interesting. Skipping to where the Prodesso was, she greeted him. "Hi Professor. Hope you're well." She was being ULTRA formal today. She looked curiously at the Whomping Willow.

This class should be super interesting.

Ooh, a skipping girl. Whew, good, he'd missed seeing skipping kids. His eyes sadly glanced at Tempus the yo-yo. "Hello, dear."

"Good morning to you, too, son." He smiled and watched the boy go with his friends.

The cute little girl looked tired, too. Botros patted her head as she passed, "'Morning, dear."

Huh. The mute boy looked perfectly young and kicking. Still grouchy, though. Interesting.

ANYWAY. Most of them seemed to have gathered, Botros clapped his hands to get their attention and started talking in his freshly-young and non-raspy voice. "Good morning everyone, thank you for making the trip down here to the Whomping Willow. I understand that most of you are tired and out-of-breath.." No, really, he seriously understood. "But it's going to be worth it." Optimistic face and smiles for everyone. Even if it was a bit forced.

"Today's class is going to be all that we've learnt about curse breaking in a nutshell. As you can see behind me, we have the Whomping Willow trapped in a box of four walls. I took the liberty to design those walls in a way that resembled those discovered in the cursed tombs found in Egypt. You can inspect those walls as closely as you can, but be careful because if you touch them..." He hopped a few steps behind him touch one of them but ZAP! an icy-blue spell zapped his hand as soon as his fingers touched the walls. "Those walls are cursed. Our task today is to break those curses, break those walls and save the whomping willow.... before it woke up... which would be in two hours...maximum." He was feeling daredevil-ish these days, okay?

SO. "First off, let's do a very quick revision over curse-breaking. Raise your hand and tell us what you know about it, what we've learnt before? You can go ahead and examine the walls closely, too, if you like. Just keep it all quiet and in order."
ooc: - hi, welcome to our last lesson this term!
- You can refer to the previous (joint) lesson to catch up with us and answer the professor's question about curse-breaking.
- You can have your character approach the walls and circle the tree if they want, just keep chatter to minimum.
- If you have any question, you can PM/IM/VM/DM me.
- Class will continue in 12 hours!

So the walls were cursed? That was interesting. Ella watched curiously as Botros went to touch one, eyes widening slightly when his hand was zapped by a spell upon getting too close. Well then. This was an awesome challenge and more so because of what they'd be trying to help. The willow was special to her, did he know? So of course she was going to give this her all. Of course.

When Botros gave the okay, Ella very slowly made her way over to the walls, inspecting them carefully but being careful not to touch anything. She wasn't keen on being zapped and honestly, she wasn't sure her body could take it, even if it wasn't super strong or anything. And what did she know about curses? Ella tried to think back to the joint lesson and when she'd thought of something, her hand went up.

"Runic Wards are used for the more powerful curses, Professor." He'd said that last lesson, yeah? "And the ward part is a spell that is tied to an object, like the wall in this case, by at least three runes." But there could be more, yeah? And as for breaking the curses, well Ella would lead that explanation to someone else. She'd want to touch the wall to demonstrate and if she did that, it would only end badly for her.

Class finally started when Professor Botros began to tell everyone what today's lesson was all about. What was curse breaking? Sander spent a few minutes thinking about what he knew and had learned before raising his hand.

"Professor curses are spells placed on an object or place using numbers or runic wards to ward off intruders, to prevent others from finding out stuff and to harm or injure an unsuspecting victim. Curse breaking involves first finding what the curse is and next breaking it by finding it's weakest spots." Sander shared what he had remembered.

Edward Penguin 03-10-2014 03:13 PM

Ian remembered some things from the last lesson and he was quite excited. He had enjoyed making his amulet and the thing he remembered about curse-breaking seemed simple. He raised his hand slowly and answered, Professor, to break the curses, you look for the weak point in the runes. The middle. He liked the middle. He considered himself average, which was the middle. He didn't however connect that the middle was the weak point and so technically, he'd be a weak point.

Girlfriend got big grins from the Head Boy when she joined him. Mainly because of where they happened to be. Memories, you know? He also raised his eyebrows when she was joined by... people. People he only knew from face and name. Popular Head Girl was popular.

So... he turned his attention over to Botros instead. Botros and his blonde hair. Was it acceptable to ask a Professor about hair or...? ... Probably not. He was just going to concentrate on something else instead then. Like... the fact that they would be breaking the Whomping Willow free from the curses on the wall. And the fact that the wall zapped at you. BLINK. ... Right.

A quick revision over curse breaking? What could he add that was... different? The boy stood there, scanning over the wall for some sort of sign... or a hint. Anything that could help him answe-- ... OH! Homework! "Professor?" he started, raising his hand in the air, "Erm... sometimes the weakest spot is the odd one out. I mean... there was a part of the homework where there was a pattern or a stretch of the same rune except for one and the weakest spot ended up being that one. The odd one out. The one that... doesn't fit the pattern." ... That... made sense, right?

He also had a question. Naturally. "Erm... professor? You can't touch the wall at all? Not even... with a stick?"

WhittyBitty 03-10-2014 03:50 PM

Giving Professor Botros a smile, she had to admit that she was doing well besides her fear of messing this class up. Maybe Ancient Runes was a class she was destined to be bad at? Nah, she didn't really buy into all that Divination stuff though she held some sort of fascination for the subject.

Looking over at the walls surrounding the Whomping Willow, Lux noticed for the first time that there were markings on them. Of course, why had she not considered this before? Though, Botros was playing a bit of the daredevil role today; even if they had a few hours, that tree could seriously hurt them if time ran out. She hoped to be well out of the way when that happened.

Raising her hand at the first question, she tried to remember something that she had learned in the last lesson. It had been a hard one for her, so there was not a huge amount that she had grasped. "I remember that in order to break a curse, you need to find the weak spot in the Runes." That was the main part she remembered. There was also something about Runic Wards, but she wasn't as sure about them.

Lissy Longbottom 03-10-2014 05:02 PM

Caleb honestly couldn't remember much from last lesson, because he'd slept through most of it. Not that he could help it - it was this AGING thing. He was always tired! So he just decided to go off of what everyone else said. Yeah, that was a good idea!

"You have to find the weak spot," he said. Yup. That was it. That was the extent of Caleb's knowledge.

Talikins 03-10-2014 05:42 PM

HAH. HAH. HAH.

Answer a question? Not today nooooope. Today she wasn't even in the mood for sitting in a class, which was why Professor Botros was lucky he planned this one outdoors. Abbi planned to stay close -or as close as she could get to the walls- to make herself seem interested, but really she was far from, if anything she found the wall designs absolutely hilarious.

The first wall had to be the best with the half naked people working about. Even the cows, it looked like it was smelling the guys bottom. Had he gassed or something?

GIIIIGGLE SNORT.

Woopsy. Not too loud of a giggle though.

Team ronmione 03-10-2014 06:53 PM

What did they know about curse breaking? Tag had had trouble in the last lesson so his mind had kind of gone fuzzy. So when Botros asked that this very second Tag simply looked at him some more and stayed quiet.

But he was paying attention to his classmates, no walking up to the willow though. That was more of Lex's job. Anyway, his classmates all seemed to agree that they would need to find a weak spot when it came to curse breaking.

Nods all around.

FearlessLeader19 03-10-2014 06:54 PM

Adi had found curse breaking quite complicated for his brain and was not really looking forward to getting the Willow free from the walls. However, he did have an answer to contribute so he raised his hand.

"We learnt that the weak spots are mainly in the center but there are exceptions such as when there are two runes- one repeating but the other one is not. The one not repeating is the weak spot.'' Adi believed he was correct with that question.

Grrr..Meow 03-10-2014 07:12 PM

Bay hobbled closer to the walls to take a look… but he hoped he would hobble to close to it.. he didn't want to get zapped as the Professor showed them.. turning his head to answer the question Bay raised his hand "i know we need to find the weak spot of a curse and if theres a complicated curse then we need to break it down to simple ones?"

he hoped he was right.. he didn't want to be around this tree in two hours time when it decided to wake up and go crazy.

Felixir 03-10-2014 07:31 PM

Ah, Botros was awesome. And......... he sounded... different? Tobias wasn't sure what it was. He'd not noticed the man's renewed youth, but if he HAD, the Hufflepuff might have put the two together. It was only really a passing thought, and not all that worrying, so Tobias... didn't worry.

But yes, sitting. FanTASTIC. Tobias smiled gratefully and started on the process of gradually lowering himself to the floor, in a way that he wouldn't like... lock up his knees or something.

It took a while, but he was down. Safe and sound. And the lesson was started.

Cursed walls, huh? Tobias would probably have gone over to get a better look, were he not already on the floor. Instead, he settled with peering over from his position right here.

As for the question... uh... Toby didn't know. He'd not found all this curse breaking stuff very easy at all, but he was always one for trying. The Hufflepuff's memory was horrid these days, too, so... really this was hit and miss. He raised his hand.

"I think some curses have more than one weak spot, like complex ones. Or it's more that you break it down gradually, but that sort of does mean there's more than one, right?"

Maybe? Heh.

Deezerz 03-10-2014 09:35 PM

He wanted to get them killed, didn't he? What if they didn't break the curse in time and the Whomping Willow barrel down on the with its massive branches? Sure, now that Botros could run (she assumed) he was all daredevil and stuff. HISSS. SIGH. She wanted to tease the Whomping Willow and tell the tale, but in this...state she was in, it was quite impossible she could out run it.

BUT...she trusted he wouldn't let anything bad happen to them.

As for the question, she raised her hand, wincing slightly. Hopefully it didn't get stuck the way it had when she put her jumper on this morning.

"There are three types of runic wards: simple, double and complex." She remembered that correctly, yeah?

DaniDiNardo 03-10-2014 09:50 PM

There was nothing that was gonna make this class okay again. She would be stuck staring at the Professor and his incredibly blonde hair thus reminding her of her own failure of hair that was getting closer to white than grey. Was that EVEN meant to happen? She didn't know but she was beyond questioning things by now--

Neat the wall zapped people.

Alright, she was sold, this would be an epic lesson and the Gryffindor stepped closer to the wall trying get a look for herself. This wall was cursed? As in they'd have to uncurse it? What would happen if they didn't? The tree was bloody strong enough to withstand getting a few minor zaps. She imagined it would break the wall itself if it really wanted to, then it would whomp them...and it would hurt.

Something the Professor might not have thought through well enough but what was life without some risks, eh? Like now. While the Professor spoke Lex kept inching her finger toward the wall until ZAP!

Holy kneazle! Let's try that again!....It was safe to say she wasn't paying attention, yes? It was the Professor's fault. Zapping and Alexa came hand in hand and neither went well with formal education.

Expecto-Penguin 03-10-2014 10:42 PM

Kace was smiling and chuckled when the professor replied to his comment. Then he heard the professor move onto the activity. He went back in his mind and wondered what did he learn last lesson about curse breaking. He heard his fellow students answers and agreed with them. They said it all. He didn't think they needed to be repeated.

His attention went to the walls. He looked around and had a question about them, "Professor are these hieroglyphics?" he asked quietly pointing to some symbols on the walls.

Anna Banana 03-10-2014 11:47 PM

UGHHH.

See, this was why Sophie hated Runes so much. Everybody, even Caleb, seemed to know what was going on. Everybody except Sophie, that is. She was honestly hoping they'd try something new, since she didn't even understand what the last lesson was about. No such luck, though.

"Professor," she said, raising her hand. "What do you do if your weak spot is finding the weak spot?" She just wasn't good at this. Was she going to get whomped by the willow?! Couldn't they just let the thing die? Why'd they have to save it anyway?

lemon 03-11-2014 04:12 AM

What? No cane? Alice's face fell, but she said nothing. Instead, she scooted closer to the wall, near enough to inspect it without getting up but not nearly as close as you needed to be for a zap. What had they learned before? Her old person brain was having quite a difficult time recalling anything, but she did her best to remember.

"A ward's most commonly found in the form of a spell. The reason that you have to have runic knowledge when breaking one is because they're strong and united lines of power, and the spaces between the runes are bridged together by magic. You can't break that kind of bond without locating a weak spot."

.... like everyone else had already said. Merlin, was aging making her REPEAT answers? Was this what wrinkly people did? Horrifying.

FireboltAvis88 03-11-2014 05:09 AM

Sander walked over to join the other students who were examining the four walls around the Whomping Willow. Fascinating...yes very fascinating indeed. It looked like the Professor had managed to get his hands on some dead pharaoh's inner sanctuary walls and placed them here.

From where he was standing, he could see not only Egyptian hieroglyphics recognizing some of them, but more importantly, the symbols. He saw the symbol he had carved onto his amulet. The Ankh.

Yes! there was the eye of Horus and the Amenta. Sander couldn't wait to try breaking the curse. He hoped that it wasn't going to be as tough as their homework.

SlytherinSistah 03-11-2014 06:50 AM

Hehehehe. It looked like Thoth was telling Ammit he was going to be back in a few and she was acknowledging it. A-dorable. Botros, the bronzed Adonis, meanwhile had asked them a question. Cutty sneered a bit for the repetition. Was that really all they learned? His hand went up as a bit of an after-thought. "The complexity of the ward will dictate how difficult it is to break."

And, four walls, eh? He wondered if that bore an significance in today's lesson.

Also, Lex had gotten herself shocked or something. She'd better not get herself killed. She was Cutty's best customer yet. If she died he was totally gonna kill her or so his ironic thoughts went.

[indent]"Exactly. The rules to curse-breaking is still flexible. Just when the Runologists find a pattern or manage to set the rules for it, someone discovers something exceptional somewhere and put us back in the analyzing process. The rules stay, though, especially in your case as beginners. But keep your eyes and mind open for other possibilities. Like Mr. Summers mentioned, the weak spot is naturally the alien spot, the one that breaks a certain pattern or series of identical runes. Get rid of the alien one and then start working on the well-bonded other runes." He offered the Head Boy a smile before shrugging at his question. "Why don't you try?"

ooc: if Alec pokes the wall with a stick and keeps it on the wall for a moment, the curses will flash as an extra layer of ray around the walls. :)

"You mean that if we had a double or a complex ward then we break them down to simple wards so that we can determine the center rune and break it. Simple wards can be a series of matching, or repeated, runes as you mentioned so we start with the different rune and then go from there." This was a better explanation.

Even the simple ones, because when you break the first weak spot, your ward becomes two smaller wards with two new weak spots. And you keep breaking them down until you're left with nothing but scattered uni or duo runes." Just like Marco did with his homework. Did they all check it out? It was important.

Zapping and Alexa came hand in hand and neither went well with formal education.

.... right. He should've known.

He kept averting his gaze over at the old!Lex by the wall, what if she got zapped too many times and DIED? Oh Merlin. But he did't tell her not to stay there, she must be inspecting the symbols and drawings on the walls.

Oh an unrelated question, but a curious one! Botros smiled at the boy and looked back at the wall behind him, "Not exactly. But that's a really long, really detailed subject. We'll get to it when we need to it in later classes. Right now, you can consider those as equivalent of stories."

Botros did not understand her question. So he stared at her for a moment. Then scratched his head. Then his jaw. Then... "I'm afraid I do not know what you mean by your weak spot, but the weak spot in the curses is just an alleged rune. We decide that this is the weak one, it is not weak when the curse-breaker casts it." That was all the understanding he had of her question.

Horrifying.

"Precise answer, yes, thank you." She basically summarized what some students said, thank Merlin, he didn't have to repeat.

Cutty sneered a bit for the repetition. Was that really all they learned? His hand went up as a bit of an after-thought. "The complexity of the ward will dictate how difficult it is to break."

And, four walls, eh? He wondered if that bore an significance in today's lesson.

Also precise answer! Botros nodded vigorously, "Yes, very good."

"So, in order to break the curses first we have to determine the weak spots in the line of runes. Following the rules we were taught in the previous lesson. But before that, we need to reveal the curse and the runes." See, they forgot this little but important part. "So, this class we will break the curses then using magic we will destroy those walls for the Whomping Willow to spread out its branches and live." He cleared his throat.

"After we find the weak spot, we need to choose an opposite rune and carve it over that spot. For example, if our weak spot is Kenaz, which is fire, then I'd choose Isa, represents ice, and carve it using the Intaglio spell over Kenaz. We do that to all the weak spots. If we chose strong enough runes to defy those weak spots then the curse will burn, you'll smell the burning actually and then we can do whatever those curses are preventing us from doing.

If the carving is not successful, the curse will swallow the newly carved rune. You'll have to either carve with more focus, or choose another stronger rune.
"

ooc: - This is the only and main activity in class, that's basically what this lesson will be about so take your time.
- Botros divided the class to groups, the point credits will be awarded to the creative and the best team-spirited characters. It is not a competition, though.
- The activity will NOT start until Botros says so, for now just gather around as groups and ask the professor whatever questions your characters have. We'll continue in 12-18 hrs.

Ian heard the professor's response to his answer and was ok with it. This certainly wasn't his strongest subject. It was pretty advanced and then he studied the walls a bit more than he had when he first approached. This was not some simple matter of just looking at characters. This was going to take some work. He wanted to go up and touch the wall, but he thought perhaps that would seem out of place and not yet appropriate. He was drawn to the patterns and images before him. He inched closer to the wall, drawn by some inexorable force.

He heard the professor tell the first through third students to join him and he snapped out of his condition to shuffle over to the professor. What a chance to actually do practical things. This seemed to be more fun than reading about runes. Bart might have a point.

Seventh Years?

Awesome. They were going to get a chance at breaking the curse.

O_o they were going to work in groups, with the Seventh years tackling the fourth wall. Sander walked over to the wall assigned to them and looked around.

He had recognized some 7th year students in class earlier, so he raised his hand.

"Hi I'm a 7th year," Sander called out to any 7th year within hearing distance. Then he waited hoping the rest would join him soon.

hermionesclone 03-11-2014 04:25 PM

Seventh years ^_^

So they were going to follow the rules today? Awesome. And they were going to carve the runes too. More awesome. What was not so awesome was the idea of choosing the right rune. The eighteen year old had a funny feeling that something would go wrong. Or... that he'd end up selecting the wrong rune.

Shaking these thoughts away, he headed over towards the... fourth wall, was it? Seventh years. Fourth wall. Yeah, he was there. He had even grabbed a stick to try and touch the wall with later. Curiosity, you know. He wanted to know what it would do. Alec gave Sander a smile and a "Hey!" in greeting. There were others coming, right? Like Ells and... ... were there other seventh years in the class? He hoped so. Because then he'd be able to concentrate more and not be distracted by a certain blonde.

Grey-blue eyes landed on the wall again and he leant in for a closer look. Botros did mention something about revealing the curse and the runes, right? And it was only as he was inspecting the wall now that he realised... that no runes could be seen on there. None that he recognised, anyways.

So... "Everyone think they're ready to tackle a wall?" See? Not awkward. ... Right?

Lissy Longbottom 03-11-2014 04:27 PM

UGH he had to go with the FIRST YEARS? Caleb would never get anything done. Nevermind the fact that HE himself didn't really know what they were doing - but he at least had an excuse. Botros was stealing his youth.

Speaking of, he had to go with the professor too? This was just getting worse and worse. Looking particularly sour, Caleb headed over to the wall with the youngins and crossed his arms. Could they get started so he could focus on showing all these kids how it was REALLY done in Ancient Runes?!

Sander breathed a sigh of relief when Alec came over to join him at the fourth wall. He smiled and nodded at the Head Boy, "Hey there. I guess I'm ready as I'll ever be," he replied to Alec's question.

...and that didn't mean that he'd know what he was doing. Merlin forbid he'd be lucky if he didn't destroy the wall in the process.

But yes he was ready. It would be a nice challenge. Yes indeed.

Sweet, they got to work with the Whomping Willow! So Caelen MIGHT be a little fun happy right now. But eeeevvveeeryone in Hogwarts was ooold. There was like no fun around here. And the old people were STILL really creepy. This year at Hogwarts was the opposite of fun. And that was the opposite of everything Caelen liked. Sigh.

Wait. Breaking charms? Maybe the Professor had the charm to get the aging spell off of the students. Hmmm, he WAS getting younger. And everyone -and she meant everyone- was getting older. The little Ravenclaw was keeping an eye out for anyone that may or may not hold the key for solving this thing. Because she -and probably a large population of the actual old people student body- didn't want to believe it was permanent. At least it seemed to stop attacking people, whatever it was. The little redhead was thinking about walking around with a surgical mask.

The blue eyed girl walked over to her assigned wall and waited, bouncing up and down on her toes. Exciting! Trees that attacked you? Double exciting! Okay, she reeeeallly needed to get out and about Hogwarts again.

Re-positioning her hair into a high ponytail that showed off her heart shaped face, she looked at all of the other students. And at the same time, tried to keep an eye on the Professor. Because he was being very fishy as of late. And she was having none of it.

Cutty got up and drew closer to the agricultural scene unafraid to shove his way to the front if he had to. On his way up he noticed a very displeased looking Caleb Newell and he elbowed him slightly with a smirk. Oh, he had no idea what Caleb was looking so unsatisfied about, but it was just fun to tease him. Cutty couldn't have been happier to work with the younger years, it was the bronzed Adonis version of Botros that got in the way of him completely taking over and using them as guinea pigs that he found a minor set-back.

He brought with him a small note pad and a muggle mechanical pencil for note taking. His wand was already in his hand he wanted to cast SpeRevelio, but with Botros present, the elder wizard probably had something specific in mind for them. Though if he wanted a demonstration, Cutty was so dtd.

WhittyBitty 03-11-2014 06:25 PM

This sounded HARD. Lux only had a slight grasp of what they were supposed to do, and it was a relief to see that they would be doing this as teams and she would be joining with the Professor. At least she would not be doing this alone, but tackling the wall with other Years as well. Feeling a little better, she made her way over to where Professor Botros was.

fourth or fifth years

Bay hobbled over to his wall to try to figure out what to do with it.. he so badly wanted something to lean or sit on.. his knee was just on fire.. looking around he didn't see anything but the ground.. and he didn't want to sit down on that so he continued to stand and look at this wall..

how am i supposed to do this.. looking around he was seeing if there were any more fourth or fifth years around to help him brain storm..

Horse matchmaker XD SIXTH YEAR!

Ok. So, Tag paid very close attention to what Botros was saying. It seemed easy and hard, both at the same time. Did that make sense? Well, it did to Tag. Anyway, he'd try to do his best with this task, and participate, in any little way he can. But first, he'd just watch his classmates a bit, and hopefully, if he got the hang of it he would try to do more than just stand, and maybe minimally talk.

Anyway, the blonde, not so short, boy went over to the wall where the sixth years were supposed to congregate and waited for some to start arriving. Sixt years, over here.

Seventh Years

Oh.

Oh wow, okay. This was going to be interesting. Ella eyed the fourth wall from where she stood and considered how hard this was going to be. Botros had probably given the seveth years this wall for a reason, right? And Ella really hoped it wasn't too complicated because as much as she liked a challenge, her brain was doing the old age thing lately which made it impossible to remember ALL the things she needed to. Teamwork, though. That's where teamwork was going to come in handy. Speaking of, she had a team of seventh years to find.

"Hey, you two." Sander got a smile and Alec got a grin. Only badgers so far? Hulk would be along soon too, right? Right. Probably moving slower these days. Merlin knew that Ella was. The eighteen year old tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and looked from the boys to Botros and back again. "This should be interesting." Nodnod. Definitely.

DaniDiNardo 03-11-2014 08:57 PM

Mention of Bay

Lex was about to see what would happen if she point blank slapped both hands against the wall and felt the static but then the Professor was saying words...a lot of them too. Just how did he expect her to keep up? There was a wall that could fry you and he was going on about complicated things such as curse breaking. GEE, wonder which her mind would be paying more attention to? With her eyes on him, she reached over slowly to touch her finger to the wall again--ZAP!

That would never get old, it really wouldn't. Ahem but it would seem she was standing by the wrong wall? Oh? Seriously? Working in years now? But all the smarty pants runes masters weren't IN fourth or fifth year? Lex wasn't planning to work with anyone that knew the same amount as HER, not when there were Seventh Years about to sit their NEWTs who would therefore know this stuff like the back of their hand.

Second bad life choice made by the Professor, definitely.

With more than a little reluctance, the Prefect dragged herself over to the wall Bay was standing at. "Sup?" She said with a small nod before turning her attention to the wall. Did it EVEN zap?? Hmph!

FearlessLeader19 03-11-2014 09:28 PM

They were working with people! Yay! Adi liked people. Yep. So he didn't mind working with first and his fellow second years. He shuffled over to Ian, Caleb, Lux, Cutty and a Ravenclaw firstie. He supposed Benny and Sophie were right behind him.

Adi's mind had been changed. He couldn't wait to get started on this activity.

Felixir 03-11-2014 10:13 PM

First to third years? That was Tobias! AND they got to work with Botros? Sweeeeeeet.

Heaving himself back to his feet again, which took him a considerable amount of time seeing as his knees liked to complain a lot these days, Tobias took a moment to stretch before following the steady stream of lowerclassmen over at the wall with Botros. Lotta friends here, helloooooo friends!

Now he was closer, Toby had the opportunity to check out the wall. He didn't touch it or anything, just squinted. Squiiiiiint.

Young ones-First Wall

Breaking curses...dealing with wall...weak spots.

The talk seemed to be going a mile a minute and Ben was struggling to keep up. Runes was just not his best subject, almost worse then potions had been last year. Thankfully Botros had written the instructions for breaking down the curse on the board so he could actually copy it down directly rather then try to catch it all. As it was, his quill was moving at a decent clip to get it all down before they had to move on. Before the professor spoke of them breaking off into groups.

Being a second year, Benny followed Adi over to the professor and his group. They would be taking the first wall together and dealing with whatever was written on it. Hopefully he didn't get lost in all that was being said like the last class. At least he had the Hufflepuff...AND Botros to help him along.

Magical Soul 03-11-2014 10:38 PM

1st-2nd-3rd years, reply to me so that I know you're on our team! <3

Botros watched the students assemble themselves into groups. Naturally, the two older groups were not visible to them anymore but he trusted the kids to play it cool and not tamper with anything and get themselves killed. Well... he trusted some of them not to do that.

"Alright everyone, it's time we rush and break those curses before the Willow wakes up." And destroyed the walls and took them hostages hanging on its branches for days. Ahem. "Begin!" He called out using his wand for everyone to hear.

As for his group, Botros rubbed his hands excitedly and pointed behind him at the wall. "First thing we do is look for the curse. Let's go and inspect the wall closely. If we can't find runes on it, we'll have to use the spell we used in our previous class to reveal them." Aaand he turned to approach the wall and pretend to examine the drawings.
ooc: - The activity has begun, you may follow the steps I clarified in my previous post.
- It's okay if your character doesn't do all the steps, let's try and distribute the work for everyone. Make sure to work as a team as much as possible.
- Once you use the revealing spell, wait for me to post the result of that spell.
- We have 3 days to finish this activity, we need at least 5 posts from every student so they could earn full credit. Creativity and team spirit also count when grading.
- Remember that it's about having fun, so let's play together!

Grins were returned to the Head Girl. Big grins. HEY!

And Sander was ready? Good. Because they were meant to get started, right? "Do you think anyone else is coming or... will it just be us three?" Three Hufflepuff seventh years. And he felt like the dumbest one here. BUT, this reminded him all too much of the Quiz Bowl last year. Pity he couldn't remember the details. Only... that there had been... a wall with runes. And West had been there. And some Divination was involved.

... That... wasn't helpful.

Shaking his head, Alec moved over towards the wall and leant as closely as he could to it without touching it. Eyesight, you know. And they were meant to be finding the curse, right? But... there wasn't... much there. Only the drawings. And something that... if he tilted his head over towards the side, looked a bit like Uruz.

"I... can't see much in the form of runes apart from these weird markings," he said, nodding over at the wall, "But I don't think they're runes..." Doubtful looks to the Uruz-looking one. "What do you guys think?" And what should they do?

More squinting.

Squiiiiiiiiiint.

Toby even shuffled a few inches closer, still squinting and all. He knew runes could be pretty easily hidden, but... nope... he couldn't see any.

"I don't see any runes," he piped up to Botros and the rest of his group, and started patting down at his pockets, looking for his wand, which he was constantly losing these days. Although, Tobias hadn't been quite so good at this curse stuff as he usually was with Ancient Runes things, so who was he to really make a call? Maybe the others could see better than him.

Hmmm... maybe if when he found his wand, Tobias could use that Eye Focusing charm again. This seemed as good a time as any.

"Can you guys see any?"

That's right, children. Be my eyes.

They were starting! Awesome! Adi turned to listen to Professor Botros speak. Inspect the wall. Right! "Come on, guys!'' he said and followed their Professor towards the wall. Time to start looking for those runes!

Post 1 Young Ones

Soon enough it looked as if all the older students had disappeared to their respective tasks and Professor Botros called his group to their own. Benny listened to what was being said, not sure how to take the issue of having to rush before the willow woke up. Um...why wasn't it just kept frozen in some way? Surely it wouldn't be safe once the tree limbs moved and they would have to stop.

As they were instructed to move closer to the wall, the Gryffindor was tentative in his movements. Both because of his aches and the worry over the other things...maybe more for the former. He had to agree the first boy who spoke up once he was closer, he didn't see any runes anywhere on the wall. "Nope...no runes. Just carvings of people and animals."

So they would be using the spell...right?"

DaniDiNardo 03-12-2014 12:12 AM

Lex had slowly been made aware of another injustice. How come she couldn't work with the Professor? Was it because they were younger and supposedly more stupid? She couldn't accept that. Who's to say she understood anything in the first place? HUH PROFESSOR?? Seriously. Leave her with Fourth and Fifth years then expect her to even be able to recognize this stuff. He failed to understand that this topic was lost on her unless she had an Alice nearby....an Alice he'd assigned to the other seventh years.

Complaining wouldn't get her far though, call it a gut feeling but she could tell so she settled with searching the wall. "Think my eyesight might be failing, either that or we didn't get any runes on our wall." She casually commented to her only partner so far.

Or were they meant to use the spell to see? That was probably it. Best wait on her partner, being a team player like she was and all because she was hoping he'd have all the other answers too, yup, Prefect Exploitation at its best. Ahem.

Speak up Bay, her hearing wasn't that good and she didn't have all day to be standing here.

While she waited for his input, her eyes ran along the length and width of the wall. Something had to pop up at her at some point.

Wandering closer to the wall while making sure she didn't get zapped, Lux looked it over carefully. It was a good thing that she was not suffering from any eye problems like some of the other students seemed to be.

No one on her team seemed to be having any luck either. "I don't see any Runes either. Maybe we need to use the spell." Now how did it go again? She had a feeling she could remember it. Something with Revelio? Or was she wrong?

Bay was just watching Alex.. she seemed to be in a weird mood today.. "errrr.. theres no runes on the wall because we need to reveal them" he said kindly.. he did not want to get on her bad side today.. no way!!!

Taking out his wand he went up to the wall.. "just like this.." he made sure she was watching.. he tapped the wall with his wand and said "SpeRevelio" waiting and watching the wall to see if anything was going to happen.. hopefully something did because man oh man…. he didn't want to upset her.. he knew what he was doing-ish… so hopefully she'd be happy with him.. oh speaking of happy he had some chocolate frogs in his pocket..

"did you want some chocolate frogs?" he offered her.. maybe that would put her in a better mood...

As soon as the boy cast the spell on the wall the runes appeared subtly blending into the wall.

Post 1 - Sixth Years

There were about a million sixth years in the world, or it seemed that way, and Mo felt pretty confident that they'd be able to take out their wall in no time flat. Or at least in the next two hours flat. He approached the wall at an angle, looking for any particular spots of interest. A crack, a chip, a dent, a rough spot... anything, really.

And since he couldn't touch the wall without getting zapped, it looked like eyeballing it was the only way to go. Mo leaned in, noting a particularly smoothed out area... sure. Why not give that spot a try?

Erm... "SpeRevelio." Anything? Did it work? Where were his classmates?
The runes appeared on the wall, subtly and blending with the backgorund.

"I... can't see much in the form of runes apart from these weird markings," he said, nodding over at the wall, "But I don't think they're runes..." Doubtful looks to the Uruz-looking one. "What do you guys think?" And what should they do?

Sander looked around wondering whether the only 7th years in class were just Alec, Ella and him. "I don't know Alec. Right now, I only just see us," Sander told Alec as he raised himself on tip toes, trying to see whether the others were still trying to make their way over to join them.

Hoping that they would eventually, Sander walked closer to the wall and studied every inch carefully. "I know that my eyesight has been affected by this aging illness but I have to honestly admit that all I can see are these Egyptian Hieroglyphics. But those aren't runes, right?" Sander agreed with Alec.

Then he thought of something. "Ella, Alec. I just thought of something. If there's a curse placed on it, wouldn't it most likely be hidden? Whomever placed the curse on it would have made it difficult to see with the naked eye. Do you think trying the spell to reveal it will work?" Sander asked as he took out his wand and tapped an area of the wall that looked like it might be hiding something.

"SpeRevelio," Sander cast the spell and waited to see whether the runes would now magically appear and be visible to them.
The runes appeared subtly as soon as the boy cast the spell.

Kace was joining the group for the first wall. He was a third year. So he joined with Adi and Lux and Ben. From what he knew in the group. He smiled towards them and nodded. Then as he approached, he heard the professor ask them a question. So he needed to examine the wall.

He stepped up and examined it. Kace looked and looked and pointed out, "Professor i do not see any curses but i do see pictures of like egyptians and dogs..." he said just looking at the wall. He agreed with Ben on this.

ooc: - The activity has begun, you may follow the steps I clarified in my previous post.
- It's okay if your character doesn't do all the steps, let's try and distribute the work for everyone. Make sure to work as a team as much as possible.
- Once you use the revealing spell, wait for me to post the result of that spell.

OHHH! The professor was going to be their partner?! Awesome stuff! That was like...the easiest form of cheating ever! You just work with the person who has all the answers! WIN.

Sophie gathered close to the first wall and began inspecting it.

Be my eyes.

"All I see is a bunch of carvings of people doing everyday activities," she said. "No runes. I think we need to do that spell to reveal them." They WOULD get the hard one. She just bet those seventh years had a wall full of visible runes!

Edward Penguin 03-12-2014 02:47 AM

Ian listened as the professor spoke and seemed excited. He wondered a little why the professor seemed to look younger and everyone else that was different was looking older. Maybe he had a magical rune that helped him.

He was broken from his thoughts by the question. He listened to the other students and agreed. Yes professor, just like my classmates, I only see the images. Will we reveal them as we did in the previous lesson?

And since he couldn't touch the wall without getting zapped, it looked like eyeballing it was the only way to go. Mo leaned in, noting a particularly smoothed out area... sure. Why not give that spot a try?

Erm... "SpeRevelio." Anything? Did it work? Where were his classmates?

Ah. Finally. There was a victim. Mo. Ravenclaw. Quidditch captain. Sixth year. Tag nodded at him as he saw Mo examining the wall. Should Tag try and do that as well? Look productive while still being confused. So they first needed to reveal the curse? Tag watched Mo curiously. "SpeRevelio. That's meant to show you hidden objects, things like that, yeah? Stuff that can't be easily seen with our natural eye, and what not."

Smart Tag was smart. Could someone that was not a Ravenclaw make their way over here?

"I think I can help with the carving's later." He was good at that. "These first couple of steps sort of confuse me a tad." Just being honest here.

She was sitting so close to the tree that it took AGES to get up and even longer to locate her fellow seventh years. There weren't that many taking this class, were there? Just her and the Head Boy and the Head Girl, she thought. Oh, and that new Sander kid. All Hufflepuffs.

Who... had already gathered into a group. Without her. Oi.

Was this a plot to get her less house points and sabotage Gryffindor so they could have the house cup? Alice was onto them, she was.

"Hi. What's going on? What are we doing? Why is he casting a spell?" The captain jabbed a thumb at Sander. Yes, explain.

Not like anything Botros said had reached her deaf ears.

Lissy Longbottom 03-12-2014 03:16 AM

There were RUNES hidden on that? Nah, Caleb didn't think so. This seemed like a trick. He shrugged and then squinted like he was looking REALLY hard.

"Are they over the Egyptians head's?" he asked. "Unless..it's a trick. They're hidden, maybe? And we have to do a spell to reveal it?" he suggested. Maybe Botros really WAS tricking them...

"It's easy, though," Mo almost put out a hand to touch the wall but remembered at the last minute that he liked his brains unscrambled. "We have to find the spot where the runes are hidden. The spell will unhide them... and we can't break the runes until they are revealed. Maybe you and I can just try to figure out what spots might have wards carved into them."

Like for example...? Mo wasn't really sure. The amulet had been SO small, really. "I think maybe... any spaces that are sort of different than the others. Magically smoothed, you know? And then you can try the spell. The worst that happens is it doesn't work and we try again."

Bev couldn't wait until she was a fourth year, she wouldn't get stuck with babies first years then. But it was okay. They were younger which meant their eyesight was better than hers, yeah?

Hobbling her way after professor Botros, Beverly straightened her glasses. They were like lovers now; she couldn't live without them, and they better not be able to live without her.

Reaching for her wand, she squinted her eyes at the wall. No runes, just little men who were in dire need of underpants. Turning to Botros, she raised her hand.

"I don't see anything. Permission to use the spell on it, professor?" she asked. Bev also turned to her classmates. Were they okay with that? It was evident that's what they needed to do. Duh. She just wasn't sure if she needed permission to do it.

Just as he cast the spell on the wall, Sander heard someone join them and turned to see that it was the Gryffindor Quidditch Captain. Ah...he was glad to see another smart person join their group. Yep...now they had three smart people working with him. Alec, Ella and Alice.

Wait was she asking for an explanation as to why he had cast the spell? Was he wrong to have done so? Sander sheepishly replied. "Well I figured that the runic wards would most likely be hidden by the caster, so that no one would be able to break it that easily. This spell should hopefully reveal the runic wards to us."

And he really hoped that the spell worked....or he'd look really dumb for casting it.

.....or worse yet....the spell could rebound and make the curse even stronger.

Please....please work...Sander thought to himself.

Ian giggled a little as the professor rubbed his chin. That was kind of funny. Of course the professor knew the runes were hidden and his poor grammar added to the funniness of the situation.

Ian looked at the girl who wanted to perform the spell and watched. He didn't anticipate she'd be able to reveal them all, but it would be cool if she did. Ian's mind then wandered. If we free the tree, does that mean it's going to start attacking us?

Ian raised his hand and posed the question. Professor, if the tree is no longer in the box, will it start beating us?

Felixir 03-12-2014 01:33 PM

2 kind of not really (for the younguns [and not so younguns] and Botros)

Aha! So his eyes weren't deceiving him. That was always a good start.

Wand, wand, whERE WAS HIS WA- oh. There. In his hand.

Ahem.

Before he did anything runes related, Tobias raised his wand and pointed it at his creased face, or, more specifically, his eyes. There was only a brief pause while he attempted to remember the spell, but it wasn't long before he had it.

"Oculo Focalis."

And just like that, the world was a whole lot clearer, and Tobias was pleased with himself. He turned his attention to the wall yet, ready to cast the spell that would reveal the runes, when he realised... he, errr... couldn't remember it.

Huh.

Toby wrinkled his nose slightly and turned to inform Botros about this development, and that was the first time he properly noticed that Botros was... young.

Ella had stepped up close to the wall, just enough so that she could get a good view of the images that had been carved there. She agreed with Sander about the heiroglyphics and so she stepped back again, trying to decide what the next move would be. It seemed he had the answer for that too, though. So she stood by Alec and watched.

Hidden, yeah. That's what Ella would have done. Why leave something like that right in the open where curse breakers could find it easily? "Hopefully that does the trick." The spell. And look, there was Hulk. She knew that the Gryffindor would be coming along so no worries, Alice. No conspiracies here.

"Hey." Small smile for you, Captain Lioness. And while Sander explained his actions, Ella's eyes were on the wall again. Watching and waiting.

"Oh! I um...right there." The blonde pointed to their wall, just to the left of the woman. "Looks like a Double Runic Ward." Maybe. "What do you guys think?" Because teamwork meant team approval before anyone did anything and Ella definitely wasn't the expert on curse breaking. She wanted some back up on her guess work.

Oh and because Alice seemed confused as to what they'd be doing, "Careful of the wall, Hulk. It zaps."

Sander stared at the wall waiting for something to happen. His eyes were beginning to water as the surface of the wall started meld all into one. The figures and hieroglyphics blurring.

So much so that he almost didn't notice the appearance of something on the wall. Sander rubbed his eyes to refocus.

Wait!! It was the rune Fehu!! Soon others followed. The spell had worked!!

"Everyone!! Look!! The spell worked!" Sander excitedly told the members in his group. Yes he knew they had seen the runes too but he couldn't help pointing the runes out to them.

.....and sure enough Ella confirmed that she too had seen the runes appearing.

He leaned closer to the wall, his nose almost touching...yet not because he didn't want to end up minus a nose, since the curse was still up. Sander studied each one, and first identified the type of rune ward. It was a double ward.

"Yes I agree with you, Ella. There are two rows meeting in the middle. So it is a double ward," Sander agreed with the Head Girl.

Sander looked back at the wall. The runes were now clearly visible so Sander quickly scribbled them down in his journal.

"Do we want to identify each rune or go immediately to find the weakest spot?" Sander asked the rest of his group.

Yes group agreement would be a good thing since they were indeed working as a group.

Grey-blue eyes stayed on the wall. Mainly because a spell had been cast and he was watching out for some sign of a rune popping up. His eyes were good at noticing things like that right? The small details? ... Maybe. Really, he didn't know at this point.

And girlfriend got smiles since she was right there. Standing next to him. HEY! And he wasn't going to hold her hand because distractions. And because they weren't the only seventh years here.

Speaking of seventh years... "Hey Hulk!" he said, smiling in the Gryffindor's direction when she had joined them. "... And... we get to break the wall. Smash it using runes. Save the tree!" Gryffindor language, this was. He was sure of it. And speaking of Gryffindorness, the girl wouldn't feel... left out, right? They could all, you know, roar later or whatever else it was that Gryffindors do.

Thinking about Gryffindor behaviour wasn't going to get him anywhere so... Alec glanced back at the wall right as the Head Girl spoke. Double ward? "Yeah... yeah, it is! Good find, Ells!" GRIN. Smart girl was smart. "So... we just... find the weak spot and cast the opposite rune over it, right?" Right? Yeah? No?

As soon as the boy cast the spell on the wall the runes appeared subtly blending into the wall.

After Bay turned around from talking to Alex and giving her Chocolate, to see that the rune appeared on the right hand side of their wall.. "Look Alex!! it work!!.. i guess I was wrong….*squint* we have a Simple Ward" he said as he almost jumped up and down.. but he knew that if he did he would pop out again.. and that would not be good.

quickly taking out his parchment he wrote down the runes that he saw before they flashed away..

Kace was glad that he was in the group with all the others. He felt confident and safe. Also the professor noticed there wasn't any runes there, so they were on the right track. At least he hoped. Plus he needed to get reminders on the spell to use. He looked around and saw that Toby was doing the spell. That spell sounded familiar. He nodded and tried to do the exact same spell.

He got his wand out of his robes and remembered the spell they used. He tapped his wand onto his eyes and said, "Oculo Focalis!" and then BAM! He could see everything MUCH clearer. It was like he had like magna vision glasses or something.

As he began to observe the wall, he really couldn't find any runes yet. Maybe he was looking on the wrong side?

post numero uno- first to third years

Okay, she was working with a group. They had to find runes on the tree. Or not find runes. They were basically looking for runes and then doing something when they found or didn't find them. First things first. Spell. SOmething to make her young eyes be able to see better. Do it for the runes.

"Oculo Focalis!" Holy eyeballs Batman! She never considered that she needed glasses, but she would rather see like that for the rest of her life. Anyway, eyes. Runes. Find them. Or not find them.

The redhead trained her deep blue eyes at the tree and looked around for the runes. Nope. No runes here. Was she doing something wrong? Because she was following the lead of the older students. That usually helped things. Ummm.

"I don't think there's any runes here." To whom it may concern of course. Because it was important to be able to see these things.

Also, young Botros. She was starting to get another theory, though she needed to look around before she mentioned it to anyone. It was a liiiiitle crazy. And by little she meant that she would get institutionalized. But young Botros. Whenever someone told her about Botros, they explained the word old. Now he wasn't. He kind of looked like her dad. Which was weird. And she didn't want to think about it.

Adi didn't see any runes either. It was obvious that there weren't any visible ones. Plus he was sure Botros knew that. He was just humouring them, wasn't he? The Puffer turned his attention to the young Slytherin girl. What spell did they have to use again? His memory was still foggy to some things. Anyway, this girl knew what it was so he would just copy her.

Ready when you are, girly. In the meanwhile, Adi eyed Kace. Why was his friend still searching the wall? Hmmm. Maybe he didn't trust that they had all searched properly for any visible runes.

Beverly was sort of regretting volunteering because that meant eyes on her or on what she was doing. If she failed it'd be embarrassing. But she had this. Believe in yourself, Wayne. M'hm!

"W-Well I'm going to use the spell we were taught in the last lesson," she said, hobbling closer to the wall, but with space of distance between her and it. With a tap of her wand on it, she cast: "SpeRevelio."

Beverly glanced at Botros and then back at the team. "Um...you guys might want to get closer to see if any runes appear," she suggested. Just don't touch her, yeah?

Runes where you at?
The runes started materializing subtly when the spell was cast.

"Yeah! Yeah! Do it, Wayne!" Came Cutty's reply of encouragement toward Wayne. He'd've done it himself, but again intended group activity. And besides, she was more than her fair share of competent. It would be done correctly the first time in her hands and she wouldn't waste their time. He didn't understand her shyness. Unless Wayne was just a weirdo.

Oh, he only could've hoped.

What a cute lil 'Puff. Why hadn't Cutty noticed her before.

It seemed that she really wasn't the only person who was having trouble seeing anything in the Runes. Even after improving their eyesight, her team members were still as lost as ever. That meant she wasn't slow in the head. Yaaay.

As Professor Botros told Beverly to try out the spell, Lux moved to the side a bit. They were working as a team and it would be mean of her to try the spell if it was Beverly that was supposed to. As she waited eagerly for the Runes to be exposed, Lux smiled at all of her fellow team mates before turning her attention back to the wal as the spell was castl.

Fingers crossed this would be a simple ward, but at least they had the Professor on their team to help if needed.

Okay, it was pretty agreed upon that there was no runes immediately visible within the wall they were assigned. The professor acting as if it was a surprise and playing along. Benny looked as one of the Slytherin girls volunteered to use the spell, Botros approving of the move. Good thing because he couldn't remember it for the life of him. Another failure of his memory should he have actually caught it at the last lesson after all.

SpeRevelio...that was the spell!

Now all they had to do was wait to see what was going to develop as the spell took effect. Come out, come out wherever you are runes. The Gryffindor glanced at his friend to silently see what Adi thought of it all, the Hufflepuff far more into it it seemed.

Okay, great. So this girl right here was going to cast the spell. That was perfect because one, Sophie didn't know the spell, and two, she liked hanging back and letting everybody else do the work for her. WOOT and stuff.

Sophie craned her neck over the small crowd in order to get a better look at what was going on. Beverly was casting now, she could see. After the spell was said and done, Sophie stepped a bit further up to see if she could spot any runes.

...

Why did she sort of also fear that the willow was going to start whomping soon?

carpediem 03-12-2014 08:26 PM

Caelen was kind of discouraged. No one in their group was finding runes! But that also meant that the Ravenclaw wasn't just really bad at this. It was a group thing. Which raised the question if there actually WERE any runes. Again, fishy Botros. Veeeery fishy. She scratched her chin in thought. Or maybe he was trying to teach them a lesson in things. Like an after-school special, or like in potions. Which she was still sort of angry about by the way. But she was keeping quiet about that. That was something else entirely.

Also, this improved eyesight was really, really cool. The kid felt like she could see all the way to her actual house and catch Rockwell shirking his cleaning responsibility. Or maybe she could see the garden gnomes that Rockwell and her charmed to move; right before she left for Hogwarts. Of course, he did most -all- of the charming, but the deep blue eyed girl got to watch and learn something quickly. Now their yard had a bunch of hopping garden gnomes that liked to steal food from your hands. Mom was not pleased.

Caelen watched as Beverly was told to do the spell. Maybe this would help. Because... helpful!Botros. hopefully. But she still stuck around. Because the shorter girl needed to continue looking for Runes, see? If the spell worked, there would probably be Runes all over the place. Not that she really knew how to read the language well, but she still could help find them and have a third year figure it out.

And she was still excited. Because they were helping a tree! Even if it was a tree that could pound you into mince meat. Wow, she was violent. Maybe the redhead needed to see someone about that. Probably, yeah. Maybe after her first year.

Botros took a step back when he saw the runes materializing, though he did not indicate where they were, he allowed more students of his group to move closer and search the wall. "Come on now, search the wall. I'm going to hang in the back and hear what you all think of the runes.... when you find them. Remember that first we need to know what kind of curse is it, is it a simple single line? A double ward? A complex one? Also it helps if we can recognize the runes that form the lines." Ian must not have been heard, but that was ok, because he decided to just walk up to the wall. He looked around and over the wall's cutouts searching for the runes. His eyesight was still a bit hazy, but he was hesitant to perform the spell that the astronomy professor had talked about.

Just as he got above the head of the Egyptian ahead of the cows, he saw 5 characters that looked like runes. He looked back at the professor and yelled (so he'd be heard this time) LOOKS LIKE THERE'S A SINGLE LINE OF RUNES OVER HERE!

Moving in a little closer, Lux scanned the wall. She was not seeing anything? Why was she not seeing anything?

It took her a minute or so for her to notice. "I see them there!" She pointed to the spot where the Runes had formed. "They are right above the man in the second row of pictures. They look like they are a single line." That was good, right?

Now what were the actual Runes? Lux tried to remember. She really wished she could work it out without using her textbook.

Okay, so the spell was cast. It was time to search for Runes. Caelen looked at the tree with her eyes, standing back a bit to allow anyone who wanted to to come and look closer. Not that they'd need to with the awesome enhanced sight and all, but the shorter girl wanted to let other people in front. Which basically meant that she wasn't sure if she was going to find the Runes and wanted to let other -more advanced people- find them for the group. Because she didn't want this to go wrong.

Her deep blue eyes were trained at the tree from a bit of distance, looking around for any more Runes. There was probably Runes all over the place, but she kind of wanted someone else to do her work for her for just this one time. Again, the whole failing at reading Runes thing came into play here.

"Awesome." That was kind of a congratulations for Beverly and a reaction to the spell as a whole. Because the spell was probably going to uncover Runes and Caelen found that awesome. Something to reveal ancient writing. Ya know, if more wizards were archeologists, someone cold probably decode a BUNCH of ancient things. Really put history over the top.

And the Ravenclaw still hadn't forgotten about the theory. That thing that she was compiling in the back of her mind and then planning to write down in her notebook after class. The thing that she was planning on honing until it made sense. Because something at Hogwarts was fishy, and now there was a Daily Prophet article about it. Which meant that it was reeeeally fishy. And things THAT fishy need to be discovered. And little redheads -read: her- were good at discovering things.

She would have to thank her brother for mailing select articles to her every day. Without him, she wouldn't be able to figure out that the time thief -whoever that was- had escaped and that other people had wondered what she wondered. Because, what happened when they got too old? She really didn't -and kind of did, just to see- want to know.

Post 3 - First-3rd years Professor and Ian

Sure enough, suddenly there were runes visible within the carvings of the people and animals he had seen before hand. Benny finally inched closer as both the girl and Botros suggested it, careful not to totally block the area he had noticed from the others. Listening to the professor ask a few questions about the wall, the Gryffindor made a face of concentration as he examined the area.

"I think...I think its a simple line," he mused, tilting his head to try for another angle. It might be just a guess but maybe he was right for there was a chance of it. As for identifying them, Ben moved to retrieve his textbook from his bag upon his aching shoulder, flipping to find the page where the aetts and their meanings were written out. Only to be interrupted in his search from the yelling of a teammate causing him to winch.

"Could you be quieter...." the Gryffindor sent back to the Hufflepuff.

Edward Penguin 03-12-2014 08:45 PM

Response to Benny :P

Ian was trying to figure out the recently revealed runes when he heard something from one of his Gryffindor teammates. He turned to look at him and gave him a bit of a stare.

Wouldn't have to yell if I could speak more clearly at lower volume. 'Parently, the professor didn't hear me and I just wanted to be heard. Don't get ur knickers in a bunch, mate. I'll try to tone it down a little. Ian had really come out of his shell since he'd met Bart. He also had become less accepting of criticism from fellow students.

With this handy dandy spell working on his eyes, Tobias could see much better now, so when the girl (who, by the way, he recognised as his dance partner for those lessons back in the day) cast that neat spell, he didn't even have to squint to look at the wall. Someone else saw them first, and pointed out where they were, and Tobias looked over. Ahhh yeah. "Oh cool, it's symmetrical." All the cool kids are symmetrical these days.

"Okay," he croaked in that elderly way of his. "Looks like Raidho, Othala, Algiz, Othala and... is that... a backwards Raidho?"

The third year squinted at the walll, and then glanced over at Botros again... but not for too long, because the young-old-man's uncreased face in high definition was kind of disconcerting when Tobias was so used to that other face of his. So he looked back at his classmates.

"That could mean that it breaks the pattern and is a weak spot?" But... what had Botros said about that stuff? That it was more advanced? "Though maybe we should just go for the middle one." Seeing as that was like standard protocol.

As soon as the boy cast the spell on the wall the runes appeared subtly blending into the wall.

quickly taking out his parchment he wrote down the runes that he saw before they flashed away..

"Okay Alex I wrote them down for us.." he said showing her their notes.. "so now I guess we need to figure out where the weak spot is??" he asked her while starring at their parchment...

It was just as she'd figured. There was gonna need to be a spell cast before they could get to blasting the walls off this thing. She was about to cast the spell but he beat her to it...well then....she didn't really mind. No. In fact it was good he did. "Since you went and revealed the curse I think it's only fair I make the wall explode." She said with a very solemn look that said she meant business. That was the only part of this class she was interested in, the BOOM.

Wait what? Lex did a double take. He was offering her chocolate frogs?? And she didn't even have to threaten him first? NEAT! "I'd love one!--or two...two if you have that many...and you know if by some weird coincidence you happened to have a third one, I wouldn't mind at all." Nope, no complaints here.

She took the frog and was in the middle of unwrapping when something curious caught her attention. He'd called her Alex. Not a very common variation of her actual name. Lex and Lexa, yeah, otherwise it was usually Alexa. How very curious.

"You can just call me Lex." She offered, biting the head off her chocolate frog. Oh and would you look at that, the runes were appearing! She took a step forward to get a better look.

"Yup. Looks like one of those simple ones. Lucky us, huh? We got five so it shouldn't be too hard. Teiwaz. Yup. Do you disagree?" Had to keep this a demorcracy afterall.
