As soon as you step through the fifth floor and head towards the classroom, you find the professor standing just outside the door cradling the top of his cane with his hands. His usual and signature relaxed smile on his face as he waits for the students to file into the room.
The classroom is the ordinary Ancient Runes classroom, it's clean, it's neat, and there are hardly anything interesting in there. The small dais, that has the professor's big desk, faces three rows of desks and a blackboard is hung up on the wall behind it. There are name tags perched up on each desk, some have names already there with updated years, and others are empty for the new students to fill.

Ohh, more points. And for a subject she didn't even like much! This was turning into a good day.
And back to silence for Ana. She was pretty sure that the answer was that you'd speak the name of the rune like you would an incantation for a spell. But she wasn't 100 per cent sure so she was just going to concentrate on copying down what was on the board and what other students might have to say in answer to this question.
If she had any hope of not getting a T on her OWLs she'd need to have good, comprehensive notes.

Sander was again glad that his answer had been acceptable for this was not an easy class for him.
And then the Professor posed his next question. How? He knew of the chants that people used to empower the rune. So he raised his hand.
"Professor in order to invoke and empower the spell on a rune, we need to to carve the rune into a piece of stone or wood. If wood is chosen it should preferably be one that has magical properties of its own. When carving the rune into wood, we start chanting the rune's Galdr, which is a verbal form of rune magic. At the same time while chanting and carving the rune out, we need to concentrate hard on what you want the spell to do." Sander paused thinking of which rune to use to give an example of that the galdr would sound like for that specific rune.
He decided to pick the rune Uruz.
"For example the galdr to the Rune Uruz sounds like this...
uruz uruz uruz,
u u u u u u u u u,
u u u u u u r r r r r r,
u u u u u u u u u" Sander chanted the galdr to its completion.
"Once the rune has been carved into the wood or stone we need to stain the rune using our own blood, red paint or henna. Of course your own blood is preferable because by staining it on the rune, you are actually giving life to it." Sander ended his explanation.
Had he successfully answered the question, only the Professor could tell him that.

Was Professor Botros mad about what happened with the new guy and the others? It was hard to tell but Adi really could not picture the old guy ever being mad. Still, he suspected there might be some bit of mad there. Take it easy, Professor!
Back to the lesson. Adi knew this. He raised his hand. "We chant, Professor. The particular rune's galdr.''

Hmmm... Hannah had to think about this one for a moment. She heard someone say chanting and she knew that to be true, but she was thinking that it was a bit more involved than that.
Hannah raised her hand. "Professor if you were trying to find a job or something for example could you write down a short story or some sort of chant and use it that way?" She wasn't sure if she was explaining herself well or not. "Use it like an energy source?" She knew that you definitely didn't have to use a wand or anything or at least she didn't think so. Maybe you even throw in a candle. She was sure a particular divination professor would believe in that.
Well that was certainly interesting, she had forgotten about runes uses with certain spells. She was definitely gonna look into that later. Bu now the next question was asked and she knew an answer. She raised her hand, "You draw or carve the symbol that represents the rune you want use on something, usually a rock or piece of wood. You then chant the name of you're rune of choice and concentrate hard on what you want the rune to do. This is what brings the runes power to life", Oichi answed with a smile, she loved runes, they were just fascinating.

Lux's satisfaction about giving a good answer was short lived when a scene erupted around her involving the boy who had been throwing water balloons at the lake, a Prefect, a Quidditch Captain, and the Professor. While she could definitely see why the boy was in difficulties since she was a fellow young student, he sure was not dealing with the situation in a good way. And now the Professor was clearly angry. Sighing inwardly, Lux scribbled everything that was on the board down, still pleased that she had managed to get one of the runes right.
Upon the next question being asked, she raised her hand. "I think we carve the Rune we want to use into a piece of wood or something, and I think there is chanting for it...." Clearly she was faltering and needed to open her textbook again. But she had wanted to try to do it on her own first.

Christmas wasn't sure what the answer she took a note of everything that was on the board and what her fellow classmates said because she was sure that the answer had already been said
Oooooooh, Toby could tell that Botros was not happy and it was because of that Bart kid. The Hufflepuff had been trying his best to ignore what the other boy had been saying, especially when he felt the protectiveness over Botros' teaching well up inside of him. But he'd stayed quiet, and it looked like that had been the right move.
As for this question, Tobias was eager to give a good answer and be cheerful and help raise the mood again. His first answer, the one with the carving and chanting, had already been given, so he gave another one a shot.
"Professor, what about gandrs?" the third year suggested, hand in the air. "They'd be better at particular kinds of magic, depending on the wood they're made from, but they have runes carved into them, right? If someone makes their own gandr it would be all the better."
Just a suggestion, really. He'd probably missed the point entirely, but Tobias still had his mind half on what that other boy had said about the classes.

Benjamin wasn't taking any chances when the questions got into an area he wasn't sure about. The second year was satisfied simply listening and taking notes on what was being said by either professor or student. However it wasn't hard to see that his fellow lion wasn't and the ensuing heated discussion between Bart, Alice and Alexa caught his attention. Uh oh...what was going to happen, he mused to himself as he bit back a sigh. They didn't need any trouble, especially since they seemed to be having a good start to the term.
Professor Botros finally stepped in angrily, stopping the talk between the three Gryffindors and laying down reasoning for Bart. Ben himself hoped his friend didn't push any further and he did his best to focus his own attention back on the lesson at hand. Drawing and chanting seemed to be the consensus on how to use runes with magic. Maybe they would be learning how to do that next.

Ella had been nervous but Botros' smile had been a reassuring one and when she finally made it back to her seat she was moving slow today, she felt pretty good about what she'd asked. It wasn't the hardest question on earth but it gave everyone a chance to review what they know or learn something new which was always beneficial. Yeah.
O____O
And then the drama llama Gryffindor-ness happened and the head girl's eyes widened a bit, thinking that it was quite bold to say something like that to Botros of all people. She was a bit huffy that the boy had spoken like that to the Professor and was on the side of Lex and Hulk, thinking they'd had the right idea when putting a stop to his antics. She also didn't like seeing the guy upset..like AT ALL. Kids these days were SO disrespectful. GOSH. Could she bring him cookies later or something? Would that cheer him up?
Thoughts still on that, the blonde distractedly took down notes and was just finishing up as the next question was asked. Okay, back to work. And goodness, that Sander kid had pretty much summed it up. Not too much to add after that except maybe...
"Intention is important, Professor. You need to know what you want to happen when creating your Gandr. It's also important to connect yourself to the Gandr. I mean, like how you'd touch a specific tree you were going to be getting a branch from and how you talk to it, make an offering, and chant. A connection is key."

Bay raised his hand "Professor, I believe you need to carve it into something, but I'm not sure what and i think you need to chant.. yeah chant." he said hoping what he said was a little bit right.
After the Professor was done yelling, Emma watched on anxiously as he posted notes that needed to be copied down on the board. She scribbled them down silently, biting her lower lip nervously. He was so angry, and Emma had a hard time coping with yelling or anger lately.
And then he asked them another question regarding exactly how to use the runes with spells. She decided to sit this one out, for worry that her voice might crack when she answered or she'd start crying or something.
Gwen knew this one! Sort of. She raised her hand, half hoping he didn't see her. "You carve them into things that you take with you. Like a staff," she nodded. He had a staff with glowing runes. He'd already said that. Or a woodchip that you take with you. Or something you can string onto a necklace." So many options, but yes, she was fairly certain runes were carved into things. Maybe you had to say the name of them to invoke them. Or maybe just being there gave you extra protection.
The next question seemed simple enough. "Galdrs, Professor," he said, his hand in the air, "You can chant the right one that... corresponds with the rune to get the magical effect from it. I mean... chanting the Fehu Galdr when you want the magic of the Raidho rune isn't... going to do much." Right?

[indent]Botros nodded at everyone who answered. He gave the Hufflepuff kid a suspicious look for being so aware of Ancient Runes. Maybe it wasn't a suspicious look, it was an impressed one. It was hard to tell now on Botros' face.
"Most of you have answered half answers. You're all on the right path." He got up from behind the desk and turned to the blackboard. "To use the runes with our spells, we have two ways. First, we use the runestones. We hold the runestone of the rune we desire with the magical wand in the same hand and then we cast our magical spell." Botros fished a runestone from his drawer, held it on his palm and then put his magical wand over the runestone. "Aguamenti." He murmured and a thin shower of water shot out of his wand, the runestone glowed. "I used the Laguz runestone with the Aguamenti spell. The runestones need to be invoked regularly to keep their magic alive."
Pause. "The most important thing about using runes is invoking them first, invoking a rune is like turning it from a simple drawn symbol to a powerfully magical symbol. In order to invoke your runestones, you have to evoke their meaning to your mind very clearly, then start chanting their Galdr until they start glowing. Invoking the runes should start right from when they're drawn or carved, it's not just about the chanting, it's about the magic properties of the material they're placed on, the paint. But at this stage of your study, you only have to worry about the chanting." They have the runestone sets ready, as well as the Gandrs.
"The second method of using runes with magic is to use a Gandr, which is a runic wand made specifically for using the runes with magical spells." He walked to the edge of the dais, and dried up whoever got splashed with his wand's water. "What kinds of wood are Gandrs made of?"

Holding a runestone and your wand was uncomfortable if she remembered correctly. She did like the result, though. Runes really were powerful things. As for the Gandrs, that had been a crazy project that she'd really enjoyed. She put a lot of effort into the one she'd made, mhm. Then Oakey had made her one too which was nice. It was always good having an ex-neighbor who liked the same subjects you did.
As for types of wood used for Gandrs, Ella looked around and then raised her hand. "Willow can be used, Professor." Willow trees were Ella's favorite tree so naturally she'd share that one.
...Was it even normal to have a favorite type of tree?
What kinds of wood? Toby knew this one straight away and he raised his hand. There were loads of kinds, and if he was remembering correctly, then it was the kinds of woods that regular wands were made of too.
"There's hazel," he said simply, remembering the assignment where they created the gandrs in his first year. His hand been a hazel, and Toby had made friends with a the tree he'd grafted the branch from. Good old Hazel.
Come to think of it, his regular wand was hazel as well, and he hadn't bought it until the summer after that assignment. SpoooOOOOooOOOOooooky.

Sander thought for a moment before raising his hand.
"I've heard that the wood should preferably be a fruit bearing one, so I believe Oak wood can be used to make one, since the Oak tree is sacred to Thor and synonymous with strength." Sander gave his reply.

Hmm... Mo remembered making his own Gandr with Lex two terms ago, although his had been made out of hazel, which had already been shared with the class. It would be a lot more fun to talk about that process, how he'd made it and the song he'd sung to his tree and the gift he gave it AND the fact that Mo still liked to visit that tree.
But the question... answer the question, Branxton. "Yew, professor. The yew tree has great significance - some say that Yggdrasil is a yew tree."

Two ways of using runes with spells? Really?
Alec tilted his head a little as he watched the demonstration take place. Runes needed to be invoked regularly? How regularly? Every day or... one every couple of months? Or years? Not that Alec had any desire to own a couple of runes, he was merely curious. ... Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to have some. And which one would he have first? Wunjo. THAT was the one he wanted.
The great thing about the next question was the fact that it reminded him of that time they had to make Gandrs. The not so great thing was... dementors. It reminded the boy of those too. He reached up a hand and ruffled his hair. Wood... think about the wood. He had been wandering along the pathways and had picked out a tree from there. And then he had selected...
... Bingo. The hand shot up into the air, quill and all. "Birch is one, Professor," he started, "I remember using that back... when we had to make Gandrs of our own." And it was the wood that made up his broom. Good choice for a wood? He still thought so.
Kace remembered how to use the runes for magic but he couldn't explain it. The other students did it quite well. He smiled and looked at the board and copied it down. Then he heard one question and he remembered it from last year. What type of wood were the gandrs were made of. He heard Alec's answer and agreed with him.
"Professor i agree with Alec and that they use Birch wood for Gandrs. I remember making some of our own one term for an assignment." he said backing up his fellow badger buddy.

Hannah wasn't completely sure about the whole wood thing. The kind of woods that she was sure of were already mentioned and she hated repeating answers. Deciding that kt was best to at least say something, the seventh year through her hand in the air.
"Professor, what about fruitwood?" She had no idea if she was even on the right track, but at least she wasn't just sitting there like a bump on a log.
Gwen pondered the question for a second, slightly upset that he hadn't bothered to acknowledge her last answer. Maybe she shouldn't even bother to come. She frowned. That was bitter of her. She took a deep breath and let it go. She wasn't really sure what kinds of wood were used for Runes, but she could hazard a guess. "Could you use lynn wood, sir?"
Cuddly Professor Botros didn't look happy anymore. Were Beverly bold enough she'd turn around and scowl at Bart. As it was, she wasn't. So she did it in her head instead.
After writing down what was written on the board Bev just listened to what others said. It involved explaining and her mood levels went down as the professor didn't smile. She was sensitive to mood changes, it appeared.
She jotted down what he had to say afterward. See. A lot of explaining. She wasn't ready to do THAT.
The next question required only one word. Piece of cake. She raised her hand. "Ash..."
