As soon as you step through the fifth floor and head towards the classroom, you find the professor standing just outside the door cradling the top of his cane with his hands. His usual and signature relaxed smile on his face as he waits for the students to file into the room.
The classroom is the ordinary Ancient Runes classroom, it's clean, it's neat, and there are hardly anything interesting in there. The small dais, that has the professor's big desk, faces three rows of desks and a blackboard is hung up on the wall behind it. There are name tags perched up on each desk, some have names already there with updated years, and others are empty for the new students to fill.

Caelen walked into Ancient Runes, actually interested in what she was going to find. Runes were like an ancient code, and she loved cracking codes. She was forever leaving messages for her brother etched in paper and stuck it to his wall or told her mom to get milk in French. It was great fun, and also really good practice.
Anyway, milk and codes aside, Caelen looked around. Assigned seats? She admitted it, part of her was happy about this. It means she didn't have to sit next to some kids who were going to talk, or worry about taking some kids seat. On the other hand, she like the freedom to actually pick her seat. Whatever. She had a nametag to fill out.
SPOILER!!: nametag
Caelen Winters
First year
She pinned the tag to the nearest open desk and sat down, laying everything out that she figured she would need. Did this have anything to do with the lesson? Rockwell would've told her if a teacher gave them seats. He hated things like this. He told her all about the professor that made you stand before class -that professor wasn't bad- and this would be considered right up there for him.
Ooh, maybe they were going to translate it into runes! Was she going to have to read people's names in runes? Because that sounded weirdly cool.

"So, are you ready for this class? I wonder what the Professor is like," she commented after she had taken care of her name tag.
"Hey Bay!" Tessa called to the boy as he entered the class. As he settled down, she wasn't sure if he had heard her or not, so she reached over and knocked on his desk. "Greetings, fellow lion," she teased, grinning at him.
Tessa smiled at Adi. "I will be prepared and ready... this isn't my best subject, so, I'll be as ready as I can be," she amended with a wink. Transfiguration was her best, she would have to see how she fared in this class. Sometimes, it just depended on the teacher.
As she heard Sander and Adi talking about skating, she nodded. "It's alright Adi, I have no idea how to skate either! But Sander is a really good teacher and he helped keep me on my feet," she said, shooting a grin to the older boy.
Bay was suddenly startled by someone knocking on his desk, he looked behind him and smiled it was Tessa. "Tessa! why so formal?" he asked her while laughing.. "you excited for todays lesson?" he asked.

The first year eagerly made her way towards the classroom once she'd successfully discovered its location. She tried to contain cheering for herself because it was a clear sign that she was beginning to navigate her way around the school a bit more easier than when she'd first arrived. She already knew that it would probably look weird if she'd suddenly burst doing a little cheerful dance, so perhaps she could do that when she got back to the Common Room? Or maybe she could even get away with the dance when the lesson was over?
Approaching a very tall older man leaning on a cane, she'd immediately felt as if she were shrinking in front of him. But she cleared her throat & spoke with a soft voice enough for him to hear, "U-Um...H-Hello...Professor..I-I'm um.." She froze. Why wasn't her name coming out? Why weren't any words being formed? Wait...What was her name anyway? She couldn't remember it! Why couldn't she remember her name?!
She opened her mouth to try & speak again but once again, nothing came out. Before she could give him her name she quickly made a brief squeaking noise before she shuffled passed him into the classroom. After she quickly found a seat, was when her nerves began to calm down & she could feel her racing heart begin to slow down. Her eyes glanced up towards the board ahead of her & noticed a pair of directions written out for everyone.
Josette quickly picked up her quill writing her name on the little tag as well as her year. Then taking out her wand, she did as instructed & tapped the tag. She jumped as she saw it turn into a desk name tag, which made her smile slightly. Josette softly muttered, "..Clever.."
Lucas looked up from his desk to see the girl from the common room the other day and made a face of confusion. Her name was... Rachel? Oh man.. he had the worst memory for names. Faces he was good with but names was just awful. But luckily for him, she was holding a place card with her name on it and he smiled. "Robin. Hi. From the common room? Hi." And then snapped his mouth shut in case he start stuttering.
He sighed a teensy breath of relief when she sat down next to him. She seemed nice. She seemed cool. He knew her. It was shaping up to be better than expected. Her question put him out a little and he frowned. Should he know something about this class? But regretfully, "It's a lot of weird letters that mean stuff."
Well.
Hmm.
Robin suppressed a smile when the older boy gave a little panicked look as she sat down. She caught him peeking at her name tag and relaxing, greeting her now that he remembered her name. She sympathized- she was terrible with names too so she didn't hold it against him. "Yeah from the common room, sorry again for that by the way..." She couldn't help but laugh at his answer to how the class was. "Yeah I'll probably be lost the whole time, I don't even know what runes are" She confessed sheepishly. She was feeling much better now that she was sitting next to someone she actually knew, she suspected (or hoped) that Lucas felt the same, better with a familiar stranger than a complete one right?
SPOILER!!: Lucas and Adi
Just beside Robin, a wave caught Lucas' attention and his eyes snapped up to meet the age-same boy who gave him a welcoming smile.
Why was everyone else here so much more comfortable than HE was?
"Oh, huh, thanks man," Lucas replied, looking to Robin and then the boy. He realised after a beat that maybe, in his recent endeavour to be more sociable that something more was required to facilitate conversation. But, errr.. what?
"I'm Lucas.. this is Robin and do you like this class?" Oh, man. That was so weird. Quick backtrack. But nothing was coming to the kid. So he slapped on a small smile and shrugged. Could've been waaay worse.
Robin grinned- another new face! she waved a little at the other boy. It was like a 6th sense, her being able to tell when she had to drop the shy Robin and come out with the slightly more outgoing one. She'd even drop her quiet side to eliminate any chance of awkward silence- Robin absolutely loathed silence. She didn't know where it came from, but she had been told that even as a baby, she wouldn't sleep unless there was noise- and if it was silence, she filled it with screaming.
"I'm really dumb with Runes, what's the class like do you know? I asked Lucas here but he doesn't really..um...enjoy the subject from what I see" she patted Lucas' shoulder. "No offense" she offered. Quiet or not she didn't want to be rude.

Ancient Runes--...
Yippy Skippy.
Botros was an excellent professor and had equally as excellent lesson, but Ancient Runes and Sophie Newell really didn't even belong in the same sentence together. She just...wasn't as interested in the class as others seemed to be. Nevertheless, she headed into the classroom anyway. Taking a look around, she noticed where she was supposed to sit at the desk with her nametag.
Looking a little closer, she saw it--in the front of the room. NOOOO! Why the very front?! As she headed to the desk and took a seat, she wondered if Botros would notice if she switched the nametag around...

Playing with the parchment in her hand, the seventh year walked into the ancient runes class. She wasn't exactly nervous for the class as she had kinda gotten used to having Professor Botros. It was more the idea that she would have to take her newt in the class at the end of the year. With a smile nervoussmile, Lily greeted the professor, "Good day, Professor Botros. Have a good summer?" The older professor had always seemed to be very kind to his students, so Lily liked seeing him around the castle.
Turning away from the professor after her greeting, the claw went in search of her seat, the one that would now say Lily Potter, seventh year. Upon finding her seat, Lily took her bag off her shoulder and set it down next to the seat before sitting and pulling out her quill and setting it on the desk in front of her along with the parchment in hand.
Adrienne strutted into the Ancient Runes classroom with her bag swinging on her shoulder and an errant quill stuck in her hair. She wasn't in a bad mood, per se, but she also didn't want to be bothered by anybody, and the stay-away vibe that she was giving off would likely be enough to silence anybody who thought she might want to engage in conversation or something ridiculous like that. She glanced around for her nametag and when she saw where it was, headed over and plopped into a chair. She pulled out a notebook and inkwell and neatly arranged them on her desk, then crossed her arms and legs and sat back in her chair. She spent the time waiting for the lesson to start by glaring sharply at anybody who even dared to turn their head in her direction.
Eliza strode into the classroom, happy to be back and learning more about Ancient Runes. She smiled and nodded to the professor as she crossed the threshold and said in a sing-song voice, "How do you do, Professor?"
Once inside, she quickly noticed that the seats were mostly filled with students, and that the desks without students already had name tags setting upon them. Well that's different, she noted as she began to skim the letters for her own name. Finding it fairly easily due to an easy process of elimination paired with being able to, well, read her name - she walked over to the appropriate desk and took a seat. Fifth year already, she thought. I can scarcely believe it!
She pulled her book onto her desk and clasped her hands comfortably in her lap.

The eighteen year old's smile widened considerably when she spotted the older man and she headed towards him, a slight spring in her step. "Hello, Professor!" Happy Ella was happy, did he know? "Hope you had a good summer!" And that it was filled with lots of adventures because great people deserved that kind of Summer.
Oh, and there was her name! The badger wandered over to the desk and touched the tag with her finger gently before sitting down. Book and parchment and quill were arranged neatly on her desk next. Then, after placing her bag on the floor and sliding it out of the way with her foot, she sat back and waited for class to begin.
The first student to show up was, expectantly, miss Bishop - the Head Girl. Professor Botros placed his hand gently on her shoulder and gave the side of her head a quick pet. "Hello, dear. Congratulations on your badge." He, of course, approved of her being the students' leader. Miss Bishop always showed a high sense of responsibility and understanding with her fellow students. He hadn't heard a complaint about her from any staffer either. Great choice.

The professor smiled widely and waved at the little girl, "Hello Lux, I'm Abraham Botros." It seemed only fair to introduce himself to her the way she introduced herself.

"Hello Professor." Lex said, walking up to the old man with a grin. Glancing by him and into the classroom she could see what was written and wasn't in all that much of a hurry either.
"You're choosing our seats this year?" ...Yeah...there was some problems that came with that. Lex tried liking everyone, she did, but we all knew it wasn't possible and well...she chose her seats with solid reasoning behind them. What if her name happened to end up near someone she'd deemed hopeless and absolutely irksome?? "Are we allowed to switch?"
Botros laughed and gave the new Prefect a gentle push inside the classroom, "You may switch. I kept your desks the same as last year, though. Sander walked up to greet him," Hello Professor. It's a great day isn't it." Sander smiled in greeting. He was going to introduce himself being new and all but then he happened to glance into the classroom and noticed what was written on the blackboard.
'Okay that makes it easier.' Sander thought to himself and he walked in and picked a desk in the second row. He picked up the name tag he noticed lying on his desk, took out his quill, and began writing on it.

Then he tapped it with his wand and from a regular name tag he transformed it into a desk name tag, which he then placed his name facing forwards facing the front of the classroom. Once that was done he looked around for Tessa.
A new not-so-young Hufflepuff. Botros smiled widely at the boy, "Hello. Yes, a beautiful day." It was a pity they didn't have an outside lesson today.

Reading the instructions on the board, he quickly filled out the name tag and situated it on the desk.

Tap with her wand, and it was there. Pretty cool.
Why, yes, these new students were just lovely and polite. Botros failed to see why some people couldn't tolerate the littlest of students. "Nice to meet you, Leah Abbott. I'm Abraham Botros, your Ancient Runes professor." He was about to shake the girl's hand but she'd moved on into the classroom and he let her.

He stared, not entering the room just yet. The man was OLD like ANCIENT..was that why he teached ANCIENT runes? huh? huuuh?
Kevin kept looking, even his grandfather didn't look that old and he wondered how old the man was. "How old are you?" he asked, his rude manners coming back again. But then remembered he had already been send to his Head of House once together with the Potions Professor and he did not want to go there again. Atleast not now so he simply added a "Oh! i'm sorry sir, i did not mean that!" though if one would actually listen to the sound of his voice they would know that he wasn't sorry at all. But he tried!
Faking a smile, the Gryffindor entered the classroom and found a seat. Took out his writing material and books before writing his name down.

Botros laughed and patted the boy's head, "It's alright. I'm quite older than you if you must know." No need to put a number in the boy's head. Besides, the little Gryffindor needed to learn that it was rude to ask this question right off the bat.

"Good morning, dear." The professor watched the new kid shyly slip into the classroom.

He was soo good at it, understood the concepts so easily and made the transfer into the practical parts of the subject seem effortless. But she needed to get an education and so she'd continue to try. At least until the end of this year.
Taking a seat at an empty desk Anastasia pulled out her textbook and writing implements before writing her name tag. Merlin she felt like she was in first year again, which didn't go far with improving her mood.
"Morning to you too. Welcome to class." The girl wasn't familiar, Botros assumed she was one of the first-timers.

What if she didn't like that seat anymore? So much could change in a year you know.
Honestly, she didn't even remember who it was she sat by. The seventh year scanned the room and found her desk. She quietly made herself at home and waited for the lesson to begin.
"Hello miss Hannah." Offering her a gentle smile.

Aw, a nervous and shy one? Botros smiled warmly at her and patted her shoulder, reassuringly. "Hello, dear. Welcome to class." She might loosen up a little after she got in.

The older professor had always seemed to be very kind to his students, so Lily liked seeing him around the castle.
"Good morning, miss Lily."

Oh look. The professor was outside. Heh. Astrid smiled at him. "Hello, Professor." Well, she had to introduce herself but that little bit will be reserved for later. She entered the classroom and took a seat. Name tags. It said there on the board. Right. Astrid wrote her name on the name tag and tapped it with her wand.
OOOOOOH THERE IT WAS. Hehe. Time to wait for the class to begin then?
"Good morning, dear." He smiled back at the new student.

It was incredible and Cutty was mesmerized by the sheer power of it.
He assessed that there must have been assigned seating, as there were names on some desks but without some students in them yet. He searched for one without a name and in his luck, found it next to Tobias. He filled out a sheet of parchment after reading the instructions for the class, folded it in the middle and stiffened it with a charm that he'd learned for his business cards.
Professor Botros grinned and waved at the little Slytheirn. He remembered him quite well! Mister Morden. MHmmm.

"Hello, professor." She gave him a small smile before making her way towards one of the desks near the front of the class. Sitting down, she placed her bag on the floor before proceeding to write her name and year on the tag before tapping on it with her wand. There. Desk name tag.
"Hello, my dear." He offered gently at the new kid as she walked past him.
Botros walked into the classroom after her and closed the door behind him. “Good morning everyone again, and welcome to a new term in Hogwarts. I’m professor Abraham Botros, your ancient runes professor and hopefully we’ll have a fun time learning about Runes and their magic in this very classroom.” Leaning slightly on his cane, Ab made eye contact with as many of his students as he could.
“Today it’ll be a nice, light lesson. We’re going to ask fundamental questions about runes for the new students. Remember, try to answer everything simply. I do not want perfect answers from directly read from the textbook.” Creative answers, or even thoughtful ones were more welcome. “And later I might pick a few of the top students from last terms to play professors with me, too.” Because asking rune questions was as hard as answering ones.
First question. “I kept mentioning runes in my introduction. But what are runes? I didn’t ask whatthe word means, I ask what are they?” He leaned forward on his cane slightly, “Mister Summers, would you please prepare the next question for your classmates while they answer?” He smiled at the Head Boy.

Botros laughed and gave the new Prefect a gentle push inside the classroom, "You may switch. I kept your desks the same as last year, though. Congratulations on being Prefect, I hope you're well aware and reminded of the responsibilities that come with it." He patted the girl's shoulder before letting her go.
A new not-so-young Hufflepuff. Botros smiled widely at the boy, "Hello. Yes, a beautiful day." It was a pity they didn't have an outside lesson today.
Botros waved at the girl as a greeting, she got a smile as well of course. Everyone gets smiles in this class.
Mister Kildare! The horse matchmaker. "Good day, Mr. Kildare." Botros greeted back with a smile.
"Hello son." Ab chuckled, "That's great. I hope everyone else feels the same." Sadly, only few people shared the little Hufflepuff's enthusiasm.
"Good morning." Botros replied gently.
Another new Gryffindor. Ab gave her a wide smile, "Hello, dear."
Aww, Botros laughed and gave the little boy a loving shoulder pet. "Hello, son. My summer was great, yes, thank you. I hope you have a good vacation as well! Charged up for this term's classes." One last hair ruffle, because the kid was adorable, and then Botros let him go inside.
"Hello Kaze, nice to meet you too." Weren't those polite students just lovely? Ab gave her an extra smile just for her.
Botros gave Marco an innocent, oblivious look. It didn't last long, though, because Marco didn't last long without words streaming out of his mouth. "Feo is staying at my son's house this term, I imagine he's having the time of his life." Ab was somewhat lonely in the office without the little thing prancing about and giving him backaches.
"Hello, dear. Don't forget to follow the instructions on the blackboard!" He called after the new girl.
"Hello, Prefect." Botros found the quiet Ravenclaw boy quite amusing in classes. He'd keep silent for a long time then open his mouth and an interesting thing comes out. Very interesting indeed.
Botros just watched the boy walk in and take a seat.
Aww, Botros smiled widely at her. "Good morning. Hope you had some breakfast." Talking about regular issues maybe could relief the girl from the shyness.
"Hello Hope, nice to meet you." Yes, he was loving the new kids this term. They were all so interactive and polite. He liked them.
Botros ruffled the big boy's hair and gave his shoulder a squeeze, "Morning, son. Congratulations on the badge, very well-deserved." The man was simply proud of his last term's champion. He couldn't believe how quickly those kids have grown up!
Abraham wrapped an arm around the Captain's shoulders as she passed him, "Everything's good, dear." Speaking of Sherman, he's got to give him that cardigan he got him from Alexandria. Maybe this evening.
"Good morning, little boy. I did, yes, thank you. Hope you had a good summer as well." And judging from the cheery character of this boy, he must've had a great one; full of adventure and activity.
"Good morning, dear." Botros smiled at the girl as she passed him into the classroom. The chatter from inside was rising the more students filed in.
"Good morning." Botros smiled at the new student.
"Nice to meet you, Granger. I'm Abraham Botros." The professor smiled gently at her, bending just a little to look properly into her little face. More new kids!
... hmm.
"Excuse me, miss?" He tried to catch her attention by snapping his fingers in the air, "Please follow the instructions on the blackboard." Name tag and all that? He was sure he'd seen the girl before but he couldn't remember her name at all. Or if she'd attended his class before. A name is a must.

Aaand she had a headache already. They were going to be asked questions and expected to answer. This class really was going to be her personal hell. Although at least this question was relatively easy to answer she supposed.
Putting her hand up Ana said, "Runes are letters of the old germanic alphabet, although I suppose the most important answer in this context is that they're tools used to divine the future, like Tarot cards." She really hoped that she'd answered accurately and had managed to sound slightly enthusiastic about the topic.
Why was he in this class again? He had no idea about Runes except for the light skimming he had done when he had first bought the text book. He hadn't read it since. But well there were a couple of things he remembered so he put up his hand to have a go. "Besides being an old alphabet used years and years ago. The Runes are supposed to have their own magic. People carve them into stones or wood and wear them as amulets." Yep that's about as far as his knowledge went.

Lana sat back and opened her journal to jot down notes. It would probably help her in the long run to have something to review with then the time came. A little refresher would do them all some good.
Thinking about the question, she struggled with an answer herself; which really showed her just how little she really did know or retain in the last six years. In her mind, runes were firstly an alphabet of sorts. They could be put on a number of things and cast to protect or forecast things.
Her basic knowledge of the subject was a bit of an embarrassment for her, so she kept quick and took more notes.

Cutty was thinking about the question when he heard that Slytherin from the try-outs the other day give an answer. It was sort of exactly what he was hoping it wouldn't be. Maybe this class was going to be a lot of interpretation and decoding afterall. Tempus! What have you made me dooo?!
Maybe it would be worth it?

It was really quite amazing how Professor was hardly cross with anyone and yet there they all were on their very best behaviour. It was somewhat contradictory to Cutty how Botros was able to get so much cooperation by sheer sweetness alone, but yet there it was. More flies with honey, he supposed.
He listened to the replies of some of the other students and assessed that Runes were symbolic characters more than they were physical or tangible objects. Or were they...Was it a language as he had thought earlier? Could it be both? No, no of course not. How would that be possible? Ha.
Cutty filled his mouth with air and blew out slowly whilst he fiddled with his wand beneath the desk by rolling it towards his knee and back again across his lap. He wasn't bored. Quite the opposite. Anxious. For he had the feeling that he was about to learn ALOT right now.

West had found his seat, a little disappointed that his spot wasn't closer to the front. Favourite class and all. But then it was probably better to be at the back due to his height and whatever. He got himself settled just as the professor arrived.
Top Students? ... that meant him eventually right? West listened to the first question and decided to volunteer the very same answer that had pretty much drawn him to runes in the first place, so he raised his hand.
"Runes are powerful symbols: you can use them to harness the elements, or even blow things up." Yep. Didn't care one whit for the divinatory stuff, but the rest? Definitely cool.

Did he just… snap his fingers at her?
Her dark brown eyes blinked the glazed laziness away into a more incredulous alertness. He snapped his fingers at her…. like she was some bar maid. He was saying something about the blackboard… oh goodness. Name plates and such. She swiped the propped up nameplate and without bothering to check if it had been filled by somebody else, scribbled her name and plopped it back down on the desk. There.

Ooc: - Everyone can answer this question. Please don’t go overboard with your answer, posting your character thinking about it only will earn you points as well.
- There will be around ten to fifteen questions in this class, you have to answer at least seven of them to get full credit. There will be no practical portion.
- Watch out for your fellow students’ posts, some of them will be the ones asking questions as we move on with our lesson.
- Next question will be in 12 hrs max. Have fun!
And then theres his question. She would’ve sassy snapped to get his attention but eh… she’s in a mood remember? ”Their divinatory items made of wood chips or stone where the old Runic alphabet are carved onto each piece.” There short and sweet.

Lucas smiled, sheepishly and rubbed his elbow comfortingly."That's okay," he replied hurriedly, feeling awkward that she felt she needed to apologise. "It's a pretty cool room, the uh, common room. It's.. warm." Uh yeah. Um. Okay.
He made a face at her laugh until he realised it was good-natured. "It's not too bad, people often like, uh, answer for you? And you learn." And even if it was totally overwhelming sometimes, it was fun sometimes.
"And we'll be partners!" he offered, more for his own sake than hers. He suspected she probably had tons of friends. "But uh, only if you, like, want." Cue awkward elbow rub.

Lucas' face instantly screwed up in thought and vaguely, somewhere win the depths of his sponge like brain some indeterminate words sprang to mind. He took a deep breath and stuck his hand up, "they're part of the runic alphabet, Professor. Except now they're used to make interpretations.. about stuff." That was where the confidence tapered off. He knew other stuff, but more trivial information was what stuck with him. Like the fact that runes were Germanic and ooooollllld, like really old too. But he was pretty sure that the word came from'runa' which meant secret which he only remembered because he wondered if the class was going to be about discovering other peoples secrets.
Something that would've been fine with him because HOW COOL.

Please don't be lying. Please don't be lying. Please don't be lying.
Cutty felt his heartbeat suddenly pick-up like that of a hummingbird just before it jumped into his throat. It was not too unlike the feeling he'd gotten during that fateful first History of Magic class last year. Did West Odessa have a sense of humour, though? Could he have just been joshing? I mean, WHY was this never, EVER mentioned to him before?
Ever?!
In a quite casual manner, the little Slytherin boy put his hands above the desk and took a quill and ink to parchment to make note of this breaking and wonderous news.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Kevin narrowed his head when the professor patted his head after he had asked his question. And then gave such a lame answer that it made him roll his eyes. Of course he was much older than Kevin! But that still did not know his age. He let it drop for now though because the Gryffindor had ways of finding out things on his own anyways.
Raising his hands in the air, the first year waved it until it was his turn. The first question was SO EASY that even he could answer it. "Runes are magical objects with stick figures on them!" right? riiiight?
Laura looked at the board and realised she had forgotten to do the name tag but saying that the Professor had just ignored all her questions and her welcome which was mean of him well two could play at this game.
SPOILER!!: tag

Laura then raised her hand and smiled. "Ancient Runes are things that were around thousands of years ago when men just didn't know the calendar and they used these things for everything." Unless he meant those things that had been destroyed years ago but surely he would have said that right.
Lucas smiled, sheepishly and rubbed his elbow comfortingly."That's okay," he replied hurriedly, feeling awkward that she felt she needed to apologise. "It's a pretty cool room, the uh, common room. It's.. warm." Uh yeah. Um. Okay.

Robin was about to answer Lucas when the teacher walked in so instead she gave him a grin and two thumbs up to make sure he knew she was delighted with being partners. Grabbing her ink and parchment she began taking notes of the other students answers. The only thing she had ever thought about runes were that they were symbols on stones that were supposedly magic, so there was no way she would be raising her hand. She was a little surprised when Lucas raised his hand
SPOILER!!: Lucas' answer
"they're part of the runic alphabet, Professor. Except now they're used to make interpretations.. about stuff."
She made a point to write down what he had said in her notes and raised her eyebrows at him. "It's a lot of weird letters that mean stuff? You're smarter than you think, you know" she whispered to him, then began taking notes. She didn't want to get in trouble but the thrill of having a new friend was in her and she was definitely excited.

Vesper was here with quill and parchment already in hand. Instead of speaking to her classmates like so many others were doing, she decided to use the time to practice her calligraphy...on her name tag. She didn't want hers to look like everyone else's, simply put. So, while they waited for the lesson to begin, Ves had her concentration face on, first sketching out a feather...and then deciding to use a special pen to scrawl out her name, house, and year. She might have been humming, too, as she did this.
Once finished, the Ravenclaw pulled back and admired her work.

BEAMY FACE. She was getting so much better with this calligraphy stuff...but then the Professor was stating that it was time for the lesson to begin. Folding her piece of parchment, the doodle was displayed proudly.
Mhm, she was ready.

Everyone had already offered some great answers...but not minding that, she raised her hand tentitively and smiled at Professor Botros. He was a kind, gentle soul. Vesper could tell these things. "They are symbols of power...that require thought and concentration when carving, so that they work." Erm, was that right? "There are many different kinds of runes, too. All from different areas of the world."
Had she read that somewhere? Meh, she itched to grab her notebook and draw a few...

Oookay. Delilah was starting to panic. Honestly, she'd rather sit back and NOT answer any questions. She was pretty sure all her answers would be wrong anyway but it didn't hurt to try, right?
She hesitantly raised her hand. "They are symbols that are mainly used for divination.. right?" Yeah. She TRIED.

Hannah doubted that her idea of fun was the same as the professors, but she would sit here and try to have as good of a time that one possibly could in runes. This would be her last year taking the class so maybe she could pay a bit extra attention. She was going to need to get all passes on her newts.
She thought about runes for a while and though about how she should explain it. The seventh year never gave textbook answers so she was not in danger of that. Hannah raised her hand. "Pretty much runes are like secret messages that you you have to figure out the meaning to. They could be tricky and difficult, and quite frankly Hannah didn't like runes all that much!

Botros had congratulated her. Her, Ella Bishop. FJHFLJHDLD. Inner fangirling was happening, oh yes. Because it felt like he might be a little proud about her head girl status and that made Ella feel really great. Mhm. She kept her cool, though, obviously. She simply BEAMED and stood a bit straighter before saying simply, "Thank you, Sir!"
And then there was an adorable Tobias waving and he got beams and Marigold as well. Ella liked to see the badgers showing up in numbers to lessons like this one. Heck, any lesson, really.
And then it was time to start.

Top students, yeah. No pressure. Ella flashed Botros a small smile and drummed her fingers lightly on the desk. She'd be asking one of those questions at some point but first, she was going to answer one.
"Runes are symbols that can be really powerful when invoked. They've been used for ages to communicate and also to perform magic. I especially like how warriors used them to protect or strengthen themselves by carving runes into their armor or right onto their skin." Ancient tattoos and all that. So cool.
And then it was time for the boyfriend to play professor. Ella looked around for him and gave him a reassuring smile.
