As soon as you step through the fifth floor and head towards the classroom, you find the professor standing just outside the door cradling the top of his cane with his hands. His usual and signature relaxed smile on his face as he waits for the students to file into the room.
The classroom is the ordinary Ancient Runes classroom, it's clean, it's neat, and there are hardly anything interesting in there. The small dais, that has the professor's big desk, faces three rows of desks and a blackboard is hung up on the wall behind it. There are name tags perched up on each desk, some have names already there with updated years, and others are empty for the new students to fill.

As for types of wood used for Gandrs, Ella looked around and then raised her hand. "Willow can be used, Professor." Willow trees were Ella's favorite tree so naturally she'd share that one.
...Was it even normal to have a favorite type of tree?
"Yes, a Willow tree is the most common tree used for wand making - magical and runic."

"Hazel tree, the tree of wisdom. Correct." Botros smiled at the Hufflepuff.

"True. The Oak tree is associated with the Norse god Frey, though."

"The Birch tree, yes. This one could relate to Thor more than the Oak tree." Botros looked at the Hufflepuff boy who suggested Oak with Thor before.

But the question... answer the question, Branxton. "Yew, professor. The yew tree has great significance - some say that Yggdrasil is a yew tree."
Botros smiled and nodded, "Would you be kind, Mr. Branxton, and challenge your peers with a question?" Yes, they were back to having the older students doing the asking and the younger students doing the answering.

*Romulus kept his mind on the lesson. People had to be so childish sometimes. Making notes and listening to questions Romulus waited for the next question. Wood for Gandrs? Hmmm pretty much any that is used for wand making he thought. Raising a hand he gave his answer and question.*
"Yew has been used for years. Could it be any wood that can be used for wand making as well?"
That was the saddest. Thing. Ever. EVER. Mo leaned against his desk and gave Botros an extremely sad face. He completely understood that, although Botros was a professor and shouldn't have to leave his puppy at home. "My cruppy is called Dart, and he has to stay at my sister's while I'm at school. I miss him. Maybe we can have tea sometime and I'll show you pictures of stuff Dart peed on."

As the answers kept on coming, Alec felt his nervousness ease away a little. A grin spread across his face as he looked from person to person who answered. Small nods of encouragement were given here and there but the grin stayed. Thanks for answering the question? Yeah.
And he could sit down! Giving Botros a nod and a quiet, "Thanks Professor!" the seventh year headed back towards his seat and sat down.
Should he be surprised that West was up at the front? Not at all. If he had learnt anything from last term's competition, it was that the Captain was brilliant at runes. Thumbs up for you, Odessa. And, of course, the question was a good one. When would runic magic be a better use than spells? And what in that situation would make it a better choice?
Tackle one question at a time? Awesome idea.
The hand went up. "Well... you could use it in situations where you need something stronger than a spell. I mean... last year, we activated the suits of armour by inscribing runes on them and then making them attack the other teams or defending our own teams. We had to use spells too, yeah, but... using the runic magic was better and caused more powerful results than just using the spells." ... Pause. "And it would have been stronger than using Piertotum Locomoter. I... think."
The other question? "As... for the situation and what makes it a better choice... what about the time? Maybe if you have enough time to prepare for... say, a battle and aren't being attacked out of the blue, you could use runic magic to help."
Had he answered the questions? He hoped so.

But he DID very very much remember Botros essentially saving his life. The old man had been his favourite since then.
After taking a second to recover from his own memories, West returned the professor's smile and sauntered back to his seat, folded himself into it, and then waited for Ella to go up there.
He liked her question well enough. West put his hand up.
"Ehwaz is a movement and transportation rune. You can invoke it magically to move things, or to make heavy things easier to move." Yeah. Pretty cool. "Like you could carve it or paint it on a giant stone and it'd be much easier to move. One of the theories that I liked is that the pyramids in Egypt were built in this way - muggle slaves did the grunt work, but wizardkind used Ehwaz among other rune symbols marked on the giant stone blocks so that they'd actually be easier to put in place without actually having to have a witch or wizard standing there and levitating them."

So even though he knew the question was done and they'd moved on, Mo had to offer, "Professor? Just... another nice thing about using Runes is that with a wand, no matter how fast you are, you can only ever cast one spell at a time. With a Rune, you can do multiple magicks at once. It's really the only way you can strengthen a spell as you're casting it... you use magic on your wand as you use your wand for something else." There. Just because it contributed to the conversation, and someone might not realize how dead useful Runes were.
Oh, la bella Ella was up, and Mo leaned in to take her question on seriously. An easy question, actually, and the hardest part would be to choose a good Rune for his answer. Mo let some of his classmates answer before raising his hand and waving it at Ella. Hey, la bella!
"GEBO, Ella. Miss Bishop." Always Gebo. Gebo was like an X, and X was a kiss. See? "As far as magical uses, Gebo is a relational Rune and can be invoked to strengthen those relationships... or even find them. Plus it's lucky! Or at least it could invoke luck. Balance, both physically and emotionally, which is really important for Quidditch and studying for NEWTs." And... yeah.

Cutty's mind was racing. His heart was beating SOOO FAAAST! He was over-stimulated. All of the classes talk of power, pyramids, possibilities, ideas, rows with prefects, USEFULNESS!!! and kruppies goin' pee-pee set the boy's mind into too many directions for the length of one classtime. His breathing became heavy and tears began to well into his eyes. He hadn't been this happy since he'd taken Professor Dursley's History of Magic class last year.
How happy was he to have been there. He caught up with his notes then put his head down-a blank stare upon his face as he tried to take-in all that had happened.

Welp that was that he was actually pretty proud of himself for getting kicked out. Now his mother couldn't say he didn't go, because he did the man clearly didn't like questions, because he was just asking. He nodded at his student leaders whatever they were lame to him now. He wasn't being rude and they called him out on just asking questions, so whatever to them.
He grabbed his bag and got off his chair. Headed to the front of the room, because of course he was at the back. He gave nods and smiles to all in the class because they were all watching him of course. As he neared the door he slung his pretty much empty book bag over his shoulder grinned towards the class one last time and a wave to the professor. "Peace out" and headed out the door.

Ben had opened his mouth to speak a wood when the professor moved them on again, turning it over to another older student. The second year in turn, looked to the boy awaiting whatever question he might have for them for the chance that perhaps he had something to answer. How to make a Gandr? He didn't know of course and moved to look in the textbook for a possibility but then remembered something a classmate had mentioned earlier and raised his hand.
Toby totally DID have an idea about this one. For the other questions, he'd mostly been kind of unsure about his answer. But the Hufflepuff had just been sitting there reminiscing about his times with Hazel while he waited for a question, so was ready and willing to give an answer.
He grinned (as per usual), raised his hand, and looked between Mo and Professor Botros over and over as he answered.
"One part of step is that you make an offering to the tree, and bury it at the base of the tree. I think to say thank you, 'cause the tree's doing something awesome and really helping you out by letting you have a branch. I think the offering can be almost anything? I gave mine some food when I made mine. Nutrient for growing and all."
Okay? Okay.

*This was where Romulus got a little fuzzy. How to make a Gandr... hmmm his grandfather had said something about a tree.*
"Ummm... my grandfather said that he would locate a living tree from which to cut."
*Rom wasn't sure what he had meant by a living tree. Weren't all trees living?*

Sander thought for a moment. Hmmm...he had never made a Gandr before but he read something about it.
So he raised his hand,"I'm guessing one step is select the type of wood with the qualities you desire for your gandr. Like if you want it to be used for healing properties, you would pick wood from the birch tree because birch is known to be used in healing."
Beverly wrote down the types of wands, grinning slightly at her parchment. Ash was there. She'd been correct.
Then there was another student taking the lead. And this one also had a badge. Was it just badge people that were being called upon? Meh. It didn't matter since she didn't know any of them.
Beverly chewed on the inside of her cheek as she raised her hand. "Um, you shape the wand, m-maybe with the severing charm and then, um, you carve runes into the wood." There was more, but the other students could cover that. Her hands were growing clammy AGAIN. Waah! She preferred Botros asking the questions since he was, you know, more...old experienced?

... Fox Boy was leaving? Alec's eyebrows shot up and he looked over at Botros to see how the man was taking this. Maybe it was because the older boy was in an important year and was planning on taking an exam on this subject but he didn't see why someone would leave the lesson. Did he find it that bad? And, well, Botros wan't going to take this personally, right?
Oh. Hey! Ravenbear was up there asking a question. Shaking away his previous thoughts, Alec looked up at the Ravenclaw and grinned, giving him a thumbs up too. It was difficult standing up there, you know. And the question? A step in how a Gandr was made? The seventh year sat there and tried to think back to the long term assignment they had had where they had to make a Gandr. One of the steps...
... And which one did he remember? The most embarrassing and difficult one. Sheepish, the boy raised his hand in the air. "One was to thank the tree by writing a song or poem for it and chanting it while... while you sprinkle bark shavings around the base." Embarrassing and difficult step had been... exactly that. Yeah.
Mo hadn't had time to feel slighted about Botros not considering him a top student, but he might have gotten around to it eventually. Maybe. Probably. Fortunately, Botros headed him off, and when he was called upon, Mo gaped at the professor. HIM?

Oh! Lucas knew this one.
"You can chant just before you make an offering to the tree you're using. And then you carve them into the wood which gives it shape. Once you've done that you usually colour it, right? Sometimes they used blood?" It all sounded a little horrific, if you asked Lucas.

Utterly lost, Lux wrote down everything the Professor had written on the board while trying to make some sense of everything. She understood that there was a certain procedure to everything, and you could use different woods for Runes, but this was all too complicated for her little Second Year brain. Sighing, she looked at Lucas as he managed to answer the question. Why was he so smart? Maybe he could help her with her homework if she needed it... Which she probably would.
Raising her hand, she tried to guess an answer to the question. "I suppose one of the steps would be selecting what you want to carve the Rune into? Like... the kind of wood." That seemed like a simple answer since different woods had different powers or significance or whatever they had just been talking about.
Wow, um. Levels. This was way above Gwen's level. Or maybe it shouldn't have been. Maybe she was supposed to read something about this before coming to school, but the fact was, she hadn't. She'd skimmed the first few chapters of the book, yes, but how to make Gandrs? Two months ago she hadn't believed in magic, and this was all way too much for her.
Thank goodness Mo had directed a question at the more stupid people. Because she was supposed to answer questions to get points. She raised her hand, recalling some of the earlier discussions. "I would maybe use Kenaz?" hadn't someone said something about that one? She flipped quickly through her book. See? Knowledge and inspiration. Exactly what she needed. Especially as the dumbest kid in Ravenclaw.

Adi drew his attention to the boy who had helped him out in Herbology last year and considered the question. Adi had not made any Gandrs but he did read on the process. Loads of steps were involved of he remembered. Could he just remember one of those steps please? He frowned in thought. It was Alec who unknowingly helped him. Hearing his friend say thank the tree made him remember...''After we've selected a tree we have to communicate with it by touching it or looking at it,'' he said with a hand in the air.

Caleb raised an eyebrow at the Gryffindor boy who decided to boycott the lesson. REALLY dude? Well ok. If he lost points, that was ok with Caleb. They were so close in the standings right now, the boy had probably just handed them the lead!! Nice!
Ok, now to the question at hand. How did they make Gandrs? OH! THAT WAS WHAT UNCLE ALEX DID! But had he ever actually mentioned how to DO it? No. He knew his uncle would think he was boring him with talk of Runes so he never went into detail. Ugh. So Hufflepuff.
So he raised his hand and decided to answer the second part of Mo's question. "I think I'd pick Uruz as my rune because it's about harnessing power and creativity to do great things," he explained.

Professor wanted them to not so Lex would not. It was that simple and the Gryffindor would detach herself from the situation that much. Bart was right, she should mind her own business in future and the Gryffindor quieted down to let the Professor do his job. Botros could handle students whoever he wanted, it wasn't her business. Alice got a small nod for trying.
There were a few questions she had to admit she didn't much feel like answering but then Mo was up and he asked one she remembered all too well. Her hand went up. "One step would be making peace with the tree, befriending it so it feels more comfy giving you wood." Essentially talking to the tree and that kind of thing.
Pointless given the nature of trees but she wasn't about to tell that to Botros.
Bart walking out didn't bother her one bit. It wasn't her business and he wasn't her student. As far as she was concerned it didn't even happen so....Bart walked out of the classs? Cool story bro.
Now who was asking the next question?

Right. Yeah. Question.. and she was just going to guess the answer. Kind of. "Um. The first step would be to offer and say something nice to the tree? I'm not sure exactly what, though...." Lame answer is SO lame. Talk about embarrassment. She blushed a little before starting to take notes.

Her hand had gone up, but Alice was momentarily distracted with shooting glares at the back of that one kid's head. Excuse him? What did Bart think he was doing? It was NOT acceptable to walk out of a class like that, almost as unacceptable as it was to treat Botros the way he just had. She didn't say anything, though, on account of the professor had instructed her not to.
But that child was doing laps on foot around the pitch today instead of trying out. Mhm. Making sure of it.
"You.. er... stripp the bark off the branch and stuff to shape its personality... I think? And you're meant to keep the shavings, and during the next moon phase, 28 days, you gotta sprinkle them around the base of the tree you took them from. In a clockwise motion. Three times. Yeah."

She was totally taking notes. Yup. And she just had faith in her classmates that she'd take their answers for granted. Well, almost. She'd actually wait for Botros to comment. And she was glad to know that did have answers to most of the said questions. Her speed of formulating the accurate sentences was the down side.
But this one! Yes, she rememebered it very well.
"We chant to the tree while walking around it," That part somehow stuck to her mind.

West kept quiet for the next few questions though he nodded enthusiastically at Botros's response to the pyramid theory. Maybe they could chat more about it soon? That stuff was pretty cool, yeah? And then Mo was asking a question and while West did have ideas, and could share steps, he decided to just casually go with the last part. Y'know. Choosing a rune.
He put his hand up. "I'd choose Kenaz, it'd be pretty good for right now. For enlightenment and learning reasons."

How to make a wand? Leah was no wandmaker. Therefore she chose the second question to answer instead.
"I'd choose ţurisaz to carve into my Gandr, as it is my favorite rune." She answered. She had mentioned this rune for the other question before. "As the runes make the Gandr stronger, I personally think that ţurisaz will make it more reliable, as it means hardship."

And watching Bart get kicked out of class certainly made him a little happier, he was also a little jealous since Bart now got to go and do something else. Hannah was surprised that she had managed to pay attention and answer as many questions as she had so far. This was major progress for her. Honestly, she thought it had everything to do with newts and the rest of her life that was making her finally get it together.
She wasn't so sure what the steps were and it seemed like there were quite a few answers already given so she decided to offer up what rune she would use as that seemed like a safe bet. The seventh year raised her hand. "I'd choose Nauthiz because of the strength factor." Who wouldn't want to use a rune that strengthened you?
