| | Wandlore Seminar Ira Banner wasn't exactly PLEASED to be here. He was alright with the WAND part of it all, but the CHILDREN part? Circe save him. He KNEW Bryce thought it was hilarious too, he bloody knew that his boss was probably having a right old chortle about it. It was good publicity for his upcoming book and everything, but Ira wasn't writing for PEOPLE, he was writing for WANDS.
This classroom set up wasn't ideal either, but never mind, they’d not be stuck in here for too long because there was a field trip in order. Pre-approved, and Ollivanders-sponsored. Bryce was clearly just SO generous and it hadn't a thing to do with casually putting Ira into what was probably the LEAST COMFORTABLE SITUATION HE COULD POSSIBLY BE IN JUST FOR FOR KICKS. Oh no. Couldn’t be that. He'd have to talk to children who thought they knew him. Merlin.
Just breathe, Banner.
He set up the room as sparsely and uncomfortably as possible. There were chairs and desks. Not an ounce of personality or comfort or warmth. A long chalkboard at the front of the room, which had writing on it because Ira had no intention of saying anything to any of these kids until he absolutely had to. If they could follow instructions, that wouldn't be a problem. Quote:

Now just to wait. In silence. Ira stood there leaning against the chalkboard, arms crossed over his chest, with a sour glare on his face as he eyed the door. Here they come. Quote: OOC: Hi guys! Welcome to your first seminar of the term! It’s all about wandlore and includes a field trip for which your characters would have been required to get a permission slip signed from parents or guardians. No permission slip = no field trip, no exceptions. If you don't want your character to go on the field trip that is fine, they'll get a task to do in class, but will not be eligible for full points, because Ira doesn't really care about being fair or whatever.
When you post your character arriving, placing the permission slip on their desk, and filling out Ira’s little questionnaire, I’ll add your character’s name to this first post. This first post will be edited throughout the seminar with information and links as needed with the aim of making it easier to jump in whenever you want to and join in from the most recent set of instructions. Please no catch up posts, just pretend you were there all along, or Ira will give you funny looks. Other than that, general class rules apply and have fun! Feel free to nudge me with any questions. _______________________ Seminar progression: Post 1: Starting early, your character can still arrive. Please fill out the permission slip and the little wand questionnaire here in this first post if you're joining in. You'll be added to this list too! How many standard wand woods does Ollivanders use, and name some of them Post 2: Please fill out the permission slip and the little wand questionnaire here in this first post if you're joining in. Ira lists all the woods and cores used at Ollivanders and talks a bit about finding a balance between them, and the difficulty involved Any questions about woods and cores before moving on Post 3: Please fill out the permission slip and the little wand questionnaire here in this first post if you're joining in. Ira answers some questions then says some stuff. Its interesting but you don't have to read/listen. Also, guess which cores to harvest Guess the cores, and tell me why you think that is what you'll all be trying to harvest. Post 4: Please fill out the permission slip and the little wand questionnaire here in this first post if you're joining in. Ira hints here what the cores might be, and consider where in the world we are yes? Still guessing two of the cores, and tell me why you think that is what you'll all be trying to harvest.... one is guessed correctly: Dittany Stalk. Post 5: Please fill out the permission slip and the little wand questionnaire here in this first post if you're joining in. Tell us things about the three cores, it doesn't have to be much, anything is good depending what your character knows. All three guessed correctly:, Augurey Feather, Kelpie Bulrushes, Dittany Stalk. What do you know about Augureys, Kelpies, and Dittany? Post 6: Please fill out the permission slip and the little wand questionnaire here in this first post if you're joining in. There's a list of the three cores and their properties here, and Ira wants people to say stuff about Wiggentrees and harvesting wood for Runes For those of you who are familiar with the Study of Ancient Runes, you may have some idea of how one might best harvest wand wood, its similar to how you choose wood for making a rune set. Please, tell the class if you have any knowledge about this method of gathering magical wood, and if you don't know, then tell the class what you know about Rowan, and about Wiggentrees? Post 7: Please fill out the permission slip and the little wand questionnaire here in this first post if you're joining in.There is more information about Rowans/Wiggentrees, and about how to harvest the cores, and the wood in this post. Your charrie should probably take a few notes. Find a partner/small group and prepare for the portkey Post 8: Portkey! Make sure you read the previous post instructions too. ooc: Field trip starts soon! Last chance to join in here! ignore this, Tegz is reminding herself to add Dora and Alice and Zahra and Caleb and Toby to the list |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Louise Fellen Third Year | Jupiter's Satellite Growing, well the only growing thing she could think of right now were the carnivorous plants in Greenhouse 4. "Possibly could the growing core be a vine thingy from Venemous Tentacula? It would probably make for a strong, independent minded wand because they are well known to creep up behind unwary students and almost eat them." cough cough. Of course this had nothing to do with the plant incident in the Greenhouse the week before. Nothing. Nothing at all.

| Who Am I? Ern's 2460FUN Ascanius was rocking the whole I-don't-care vibe at the moment. S'like, now that he knew he wouldn't be going on this field trip thing, his attention span was teetering dangerously low. He just kept on tapping his fingers against the desk and jamming out to some Taylor Hawkins in his head.
Though, he did manage to catch the later half of his verbal throw up. Something about cores they'd all be harvesting wherever they were going or whatever. S'not like he cared. Pfft.
Lazily, he raised his hand and droned out, "Possibly dittany stalk, sir? Since its a plant and you'll all be in the woods." S'like the most logical thing he could think of, yeah?

Putting up her hand she waited her turn. "Sir could it be Troll Whiskers and honestly I'm not really sure why we would be harvesting them except for the fact that it sound interesting and things at this school are never of things you can predict so Troll whiskers seemed like a good thought." Plus it was just a random thought that came to her mind that she felt like using. Did he at least like her honesty even if she really had no clue what she was talking about. "Do you really think that you'd be able to harvest whiskers from a troll?" Because he'd be impressed, just saying. Trolls though, not exactly willing to give up a whisker and all. It was a thing to consider though, really, cores that could actually be accessed by school children. Quote:

Interesting these clues were! Adi racked his brains, mentally scanning through creatures. Hmmmm. Thestral, maybe? Grindylow? The last clue had him a little stumped. Didn't all animals grow? He raised a hand. "Hair from a Merperson, perhaps?''
Who knew? They did swim... "Because they fit one of your clues, Mr. Banner.'' "They fit... but no. Merpeople tend to be a little... reluctant to give over parts for wands." Which was why merpeople related cores weren't all that common see? Quote:

But at least now they were talking about their field trip, which was certainly interesting. Adrienne was excited for that part of this seminar, at least. Something that flies, something that swims, and something that grows... hm. She sat and thought for a moment, before putting up her hand with her mind swimming with ideas. "Possibly Billywig stings? Because they can fly? Or Doxy wings? They can fly too." Well duh, they had wings. "Or maybe Diricawl feathers? They also fly," she added unnecessarily. Adrienne felt herself getting into the territory of things that couldn't actually be used as wand cores, so she backtracked quickly. "Er, never mind that Doxy one. Grindylow hair, perhaps, or tentacle, because they can swim, um, hippocampus tail hair? Same reason," she added quickly. And she was definitely going to have to wrap this up now. "As for the growing one, the only thing I can think of is... uh. Nothing." Well now she sounded pretty lame. Adrienne resolved to just shut her mouth now. "Billywigs are a good guess, but they're native to Australia, we won't find them in the Forest of Dean. Likewise with the Diricawl, being from Mauritius, and the Hippocampus having a native range in Greece" He said. And... okay, he wouldn't mind the doxy one. "Grindylow is a better guess." Quote:

----- So the two easy ones weren't guessed? Even though someone had mentioned one of them earlier, hmmm.
Ira figured he'd give it one more go, and even be NICE and give a clue. Nice of him yes? Yeah. "The one that flies has feathers. The one that swims... might eat you." Come on, those were pretty full on clues. Did they not pay attention in their Care of Magical Creatures lessons? Or read books? ooc: just giving it a little longer for the guessing mostly because its still super early for ESTers and all, so I'll post when they're like... alive and stuff. Soo. The thing that flew had feathers. Well that kind of narrowed it down a little. It must have been a bird then. Clement looked up at the list trying to narrow it down to the things that weren't on that list. Hmm. Oooh. He had one. Though it seemed a little bit of a weird wand core to him, but you could find lots of these creatures in the forest of Dean. "Could it be an owl feather? Owls....are easily found in woods...so it could be why were are trying to harvest it." So it could make sense.
He still didnt get why someone would wand owl feather in their wand though.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Adrienne Rebecca Colbert Seventh Year | The Last of Her Kind Hum, okay, it was true that Adrienne hadn't really taken location into account. Flying things with feathers that could potentially be found in the forest of Dean... "Augurey?" she guessed, a little bit desperately. She couldn't see that Augurey feathers would make a particularly good wand, though, since they were so consistently melancholy and, though powerful, incredibly shy. As for the swimming one she had... no idea. She'd been about to guess Plimpies, but they weren't exactly dangerous, so she kept her mouth shut.

WAND CORES.
Okay, Kat was like... really into this because it was so interesting and what if this was her future? The chances were slim, but what if? Being a wandmaker seemed pretty awesome, ain't it? So... the one that grows was said in class. Kat pondered on the other two. One that swims and one that flies. Uhm... yeah, she had no idea what the flying one was but she had something in mind for the one that swims. HAND UP. A chance, you know. "Kelpie hair?" That would be awesome. They could totes charm one to let it stay put, you know.

He still didnt get why someone would wand owl feather in their wand though. "... no not an owl." No. No. Owls weren't magical, they were just useful. Seriously. Ira eyed the boy.

Which was why he'd chosen them. All of those reasons together. And besides, if someone got all pecked and clawed by an Augurey, or escaped a near death encounter with a Kelpie, then they could just fix themselves up with dittany. Sorted. Still can post charries arriving, or join in or whatever, just follow the instructions in the first post about the permission slip and wand information.

Asher continued to sit quietly. Again, he had no idea what they were talking about. Zero. He did continue to write down all of the answers and keep notes over what they were learning about.
As the others were answering the questions Mr. Banner asked, Asher decided to draw pictures on his parchment of what the different wands might look like. Some had long, smooth handles, others were knotty and rough looking.

It was important for them to pay attention now, you know, in case of death. So she was right. Okay cool. Kat got a polish kit for that. Worth 10 galleons you know, so getting it for free was great. At least she didn't have to buy it anymore in Ollivander's. She'd totally check out the contents later in the dorm after the seminar, or later at night before going to sleep.
What they knew about the three cores. Anything about Kelpies and Auguries and Dittany. Okay, sure. That seemed pretty easy enough. Kat had her hand up. " I'll go with Dittany." Like, one important thing about dittany because she was kind and was going to give the others a chance to get something right. " It's a strong healing herb, and can heal wounds and scars." She hadn't tried that yet because, well, Kat hadn't experience any severe wounds or cuts. She'd had paper cuts, but that was obviously too tiny and she didn't need dittany for that to heal. And no, that didn't mean she wanted to know what it felt like to have a gigantic cut on her skin. Nope.

Kace was trying to follow along but the professor was going quite fast. Kace was trying to keep up. He heard the professor ask the question about what he knew. He knew about Kelpies. Kace raised his hand timidly. "Professor i know Kelpies are the water demons and they take a form of a horse!" he said.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Adrienne Rebecca Colbert Seventh Year | The Last of Her Kind Hah! Adrienne won something! She was clearly the awesomest person in this entire class. Except maybe for the other two people who also won things. BUT! She was still awesomer, just because she... uh. Was cool. "Kelpies usually look like a horse with a mane made of rushes, but they can shapeshift, and they would trick people into getting onto their backs and then drown them and eat them." Smiles. "So... a wand with a core of Kelpie rushes would probably be kind of violent, and maybe deceptive, too?" Did that make any sense? Adrienne then launched into a short tirade about Augureys, which were clearly the coolest birds ever. "Augureys are shy and sad and they sing when it's going to rain, although in the past people thought that it meant that they were going to die if they heard their cry, and their feathers repel ink, and they're kind of green and weird-looking." Right, relating this back to wands. "The owner of an Augurey-feather wand would probably be kind of shy or melancholy too?" As for dittany, well, she didn't really know anything about plants.

Dittany, Augurey, Kelpies. Cool.
Ella gave small smiles to those who won kits cause that was pretty cool but otherwise stayed pretty quiet during the whole guessing part of the activity. It was stuff she didn't know, though, so she did jot some of it down in her notes. "Dittany is also said to sometimes give off vapors that are quite flammable." Probably why it is also known as the burning bush.

| curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog Caleb had, shockingly, been sitting quietly in the back during this seminar and was now wondering if he should leave, cause he didn't know ANYTHING about wands. Like at ALL. He could barely remember what was in his own wand! That was another reason he'd been so quiet - he was trying to remember the core of his own wand. What was it again? UGH he needed to write this information on the back of his hand or something. He debated asking the guy who was holding the seminar, since he'd actually given him his wand, but that would be SO embarrassing and Caleb did not like being embarrassed.
After a long LONG time of thinking, he had his form filled out and decided to join in the seminar. He raised his hand. "Um, a Augurey is a type of bird, isn't it?" he guessed. It SOUNDED right. Quote:
Wand Wood: Fir
Wand Core: Demiguise Hair
Wand length: 9 1/2 inches
Wand flexibility: Um, not flexible?
Is this your first wand? Yes.
House: Slytherin
Name: Caleb Newell

| SPNer | Whovian | Sherlockian | | Artist | Cornhusker | Blackhawks Adelaide thought it over for a bit. She didn't know much about any of those things. She knew that dittany was a plant, a kelpie was a water demon, and an augurey was a bird. But other people in the seminar had already touched on those things. She bit her lip, trying to go through her brain to see if she could come up with anything else from all of the books she'd read.
Then an idea hit her. She raised her hand. "With dittany being such a powerful tool in healing, would it be more useful for healing charms?" It made sense to her that the dittany would strengthen those specific charms.

Tobias raised his hand wayyyyyyy up high in the air. Kind of. As far as it would go. "I know a bit about Augureys!" He said enthusiatically with his hand still up, waggling his fingers a little bit. There was a Ravenclaw who'd just said like most of the things he knew about Augureys, but he was going to say it anyway 'cause not saying anything when you knew an answer got boring if you did it too much. "They're also known at the Irish Phoenix. Probably 'cause you find them in Ireland and here in the UK too. OH AND the feathers repel ink, so you can't use 'em as writing quills."
It kind of made sense to mention a property of the feathers, y'know? 'Cause wands.
Tobias gave a BIG GRIN to the dude leading the seminar. He seemed like he could use some more smiles from other people.

So mr. wand man didn't like a challenge. Hmmm interesting. Still would have been fun to try to get the whiskers even though if it hurt the troll she wouldn't have liked doing that. No maybe he knew what he was doing not having them try to get whiskers and get beat by a troll. Hogwarts was dangerous enough without issue on a field trip.
Putting up her hand at the next quesiton, "Sir, the Augurey's feathers repel ink so they can't use them for quills. Is that why they are better in wands does it make the power of the wand more intense do to the repelling factor?" She thought about this as she waited for his response.

| we love it when ou do seminars Gryffinclaw-Ravendor • The REAL Hermione Granger
WHOA! This lesson was flying as was Sarah's hand across the page as she wrote. She could barely make out what she wrote, yet perhaps writing would commit it all to memory. Not that she needed to take notes, with all her vast general knowledg gathered until now she never took notes. Maybe because OWLs were serious and things, and she wanted to have good habits. She was disapointed that she never won a kit, not that she thoght she would ever need one, yet she did like free stuff.
So now the things on the board.. Sarah raised her hand. "well, I first heard of Dittany in relation to its healing properties and in potions, using it as a wand core is the newest bit of information about it. So perhaps, wands with a dittany core would be most useful to those in the healer professions? Or maybe Aurors would need it on the job. Using muggle sources, Pliny used it in his book Natural History in relation to does, so maybe a profession relating to Care of Magical creatures would be good." She really thought that she should give others a chance.. she was wokring on herself not to be so attracted to attention. "an Augurey is known as the Irish Phoenix.. as Adrienne they are thought to be deeply depressing creatures... if there was a witch who had only Augurey characteristics I would feel bad for them. Anyways.. the feathers repel ink, so perhaps they repel other things and are thus useful in a duel?" She was just guessing. Was she allowed to do that?
Now onto Kelpies, "Kelpies are shape shifters, so maybe those properties would be good for transfigurations... all these are guesses by the way"

| urine trouble | Pat's Strong Confident Other Half | Pees Like a Champion Unicorn Racehorse So Augureys, Dittany and Kelpies were used in wand core too? ... That... was kind of weird. Or just unusual, as the man had put it earlier. Or maybe he was just far too used to hearing cores like unicorn hair and dragon heartstring and that's why the other ones sounded a little odd. Maybe.
But... they had to talk about one of the options, yeah? Alec sat back a little and tapped his chin with the end of his quill. Dittany... was good for healing, he knew that. But quite a few people had mentioned that already. Then again, people had talked about Augureys too. And Kelpies. Could he just... branch off of what one of them had said? Yeah?
... And he was going with what the Ravenclaw girl from Astronomy had said. Scary girl, she was. He took a deep breath and raised a hand in the air. "Well... Kelpies are water demons and... it's hard to capture them because they're sneaky, like some people have said," What was that girl's NAME? "So maybe the cores are used for wands that are good with... not necessarily Dark Arts but people who are good at being... sly? Sneaky? And can sometimes use magic that could be used for personal gain?" Guesses. He was good at making those.
... And... Transfiguration like someone else said. Why didn't he think of that? |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Stuart Kynaston Ravenclaw Sixth Year Hogwarts RPG Name: Rome Keller Drechsler Gryffindor First Year | Sardine VIP || Shark Attack! || D A R T E R || Captain Oblivious What did Anya know about Augureys? Well... a few things actually. Her sister-in-low had one. She raised her hand. "Augureys cry when it's going to rain." And they look weird. "Um... and their feathers are ink-proof." Which, coincidentally, she found out on accident and not from reading a textbook.

Admittedly...Alexa wasn't all that great at guessing games and didn't NEED a free anything when she could ask her Daddy to get her things so she sat back in her seat and listen to the others all get 'no's until those three students got it right and they were ready to move on. Good.
Or not...
No.
They were still talking about cores and the creatures related to them. If this was what they were doing then she had a statement followed shortly by a question. "Kelpie hair's considered to be inferior when you compare it to cores like Unicorn hair, dragon heartstring and...um...phoenix feather, right." That's what she knew about the core, but she wasn't done yet. "If that's the case then why use it at all? Ollivanders boasts selling the finest wands, they can't be that good if their made of inferior cores as rare as you say they are." Someone still got them. Poor sucker, wherever they were.

So two questions then. It seemed most were answering the second. So first it is. Merlin, that is a lot of presuming to be done on a field trip. Though field trips were always fun. "I know kelpie cores are said to be inferior to the common ones like unicorn hair, phoenix feather, and dragon heartstring."
Plus all you need to do was take a defense against the dark arts class to know what the creatures are.

| Baguette | there is no D in my name | TRAITORclaw | Queenie of Narnia What did they know about Kelpies, Aurgureys, and dittany? This wasn't too bad of a question and something she could actually answer since she'd been silent for most of the others. Answering everything she knew about all three would take too long though, and she didn't want to talk that much. So she'd just stick to something about Kelpies for now. Her hand was in the air. "The Loch Ness Monster is actually a Kelpie." That was always something she'd thought interesting. "And you can make them harmless by putting a bridle on them with the Placement Charm." So that was probably how everyone else would be getting their Kelpie bulrushes during the trip.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Anna Keller | Sardines ♥ // Nomsy, yo They were taking feathers from Augureys? Jake made a slight face before raising his hand. "Augureys eat fairies. And bugs. And they're really creepy birds in general." He had no idea what that had to do with properties a wand with one of the bird's feathers might have... but it was something he knew about the creature so he figured it was a good answer.

BEAMING. "What he said!" Yeah! 'Cause he was the G R Y F F I N D O R Prefect. ANd he deserved a HIGH FIVE. The HIGHEST of fives. And because Zahra was in over her head with this class with no chance of resurfacing, she just... well had she ever even started listening? Hmm. HEHE
No big though. SHE OFFERED JAKE A HUGE HIGH HIGH FIVE. He was totally her favorite and said true things and "WOnder what fairies taste like?"
... "What DO fairies taste like? You ever tried one, Wand man?" Oh. Oh Merlin a THOUGHT. "So if you got an Augurey in your wand, and an Augureys got a FAIRY in his belly, then you gotta fairy in your wand too." Zahra was still thinking.... "that'd be cool." Yep. Decided. |
